If there is plainly only one buddha vehicle, why not teach it fully from the beginning? We often mistake what is most direct for what is most compassionate. If there is only one destination, why first teach three vehicles? If the real is pure and undivided, why use manifold skillful means?
The Śākyamuni chapter does not make skillful means into another reality. It first looks at where living beings actually are. Some have sharp faculties and heavy obstructions, yet even heavy obstructions cannot block them. Others have dull faculties and heavy obstructions and must first remove the turbidities before they can proceed. Not everyone can take in the same words at the same time.
The simile of turbid water comes especially close. The nature of water has not changed, but when winds and waves churn and fish and dragons stir it from within, it cannot become clear. If one merely stands on the bank repeatedly declaring, “Water is originally pure,” the statement is not wrong, yet the person before one still cannot see the bottom.
The Buddha therefore first establishes a Dharma that can be received. This does not lower the destination; it first treats the obstructions that keep people from reaching it. The old physician's problem is likewise not whether milk-medicine is in his hand, but that he does not know when milk is good or harmful, does not know the origin of the illness, and does not know when to allow or prohibit it. When a Dharma fits the illness, person, and time, skillful means truly lead to the real. When a Dharma is used only to prove the loftiness of one's own teaching, even good medicine will be misapplied.
The chapter then turns its gaze toward the people hearing the Dharma. The hardest obstruction to detect may not be having attained nothing, but having attained something and therefore declaring oneself in one's final body and at the ultimate. Two hundred yojanas still remain before the place of treasure, yet the conjured city is taken as the destination. What must now be opened is no longer only the teaching, but the judgment “I have already arrived.”
Yet the chapter does not therefore condemn every unbeliever indiscriminately. Disbelieving while the Buddha is present and personally teaching differs from living after the Buddha's extinction when no one can explain the scripture. The possibility of meeting someone who understands its meaning cannot be erased either. Preserving the one buddha vehicle does not mean flattening everyone's circumstances.
The true test of skillful means often lies not in how the Buddha teaches but in how we listen. Because I do not understand now, do I decide that the real has nothing to do with me? Or because I understand a little, do I declare the unfinished to be complete?
Teaching three first and one afterward does not mean first false and then true. It is the same reality first becoming a road I can travel, then keeping me from mistaking any station along the way for the destination.

Words and Phrases of the Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma, Fascicle Four, Second Part. Taught by the Great Master Zhizhe of Tiantai.
I. Only Five Sections among the Six Meanings Appear in the Śākyamuni Chapter
Second is the extensive explanation of the Śākyamuni Buddha chapter. The original chapter framework has six meanings. The Śākyamuni chapter lacks the meaning of praising the rarity of the Dharma, so only five sections appear here: first, opening and revealing the provisional; second, revealing the real; third, citing the five turbidities to explain why skillful means are established; fourth, distinguishing the false and urging the assembly to believe and receive the single reality; fifth, explaining that the Buddha's words contain no falsehood.
In “I too am now like this,” “I” is Śākyamuni Buddha. Śākyamuni now teaches three vehicles first and one vehicle afterward, without differing from the four buddhas above, and therefore says that he too is like this.
“Knowing that living beings have various desires” means that living beings possess the faculties, natures, and desires of the five vehicles. The past is called faculty, the present desire, and the future nature. “The deep attachments in their minds” also refers to faculty. “Skillful means” means opening the provisional Dharmas of the three vehicles according to what is appropriate for living beings.
“All of these are to enable living beings to attain the one buddha vehicle” reveals the real. Buddha vehicle indicates that the Dharma taught is one. “All” indicates that the practice undertaken is one. The object known by the wisdom of all modes indicates that the principle realized is one. Here the three ones of teaching, practice, and principle are listed first; the one class of persons has not yet been listed.
II. Why Distinguish and Teach Three within the Pure, Single Reality?
Beginning with “Throughout the worlds of the ten directions there are not even two vehicles, how much less three,” the text enters the third section: citing the five turbidities to explain why the provisional is opened.
Before formally presenting the five turbidities, the passage first indicates its intent. The preceding text has already explained the buddhas' opening the provisional to reveal the real, but has not yet explained why they conceal the real and establish the provisional. That one real Dharma is pure, limpid, and undivided like empty space. Within it there are not even provisional Dharmas carrying two or three vehicles, much less provisional Dharmas establishing the three vehicles alone or the five vehicles alone.
Only because the obstructions of the five turbidities are heavy and the real Dharma cannot be taught directly must the provisional Dharmas of five alone and three alone be established, together with the provisional Dharmas carrying two and carrying three. The scripture therefore says that three are distinguished and taught within the one buddha vehicle. This “three” includes the three in carrying two and carrying three, as well as the three in five alone and three alone.
III. The Essences and Aspects of the Five Turbidities
The five turbidities are distinguished in four layers: first, announcing their number; second, listing their names; third, explaining their essences and aspects; fourth, explaining and concluding. The scripture itself clearly announces their number and lists their names, so these are not recopied here. The scriptural word “such” refers generally to the essences and aspects of the five turbidities.
First, the essences of the five turbidities.
The turbidity of the eon has no independent essence. An eon is an extended time, while a kṣaṇa is a brief time. The provisional name “turbidity of the eon” is established only because the other four turbidities gather within the same period. This is the meaning of the scripture's words “the disordered time of the turbidity of the eon.”
The turbidity of living beings likewise has no independent essence. It appropriates views and pride and establishes the provisional name “living being” upon retribution. This is the meaning of the scripture's words “living beings heavily defiled.”
The turbidity of afflictions takes the five dull agents as its essence. The turbidity of views takes the five sharp agents as its essence. The turbidity of life takes the continuous sustaining of form and mind as its essence. 〔The remainder is abbreviated.〕
Next, the aspects of the five turbidities.
The aspect of the turbidity of the eon is the intensification and convergence of the other four turbidities during that period. When anger intensifies, there is the disaster of weapons and war. When greed intensifies, there is the disaster of famine. When delusion intensifies, there is the disaster of epidemic disease. When these three disasters occur together, afflictions become still more rampant, various false views still more blazing, and form and mind coarse, harmful, and corrupt. Reputations become defiled and the years and length of life are diminished, as all the turbidities converge.
This is like rushing water becoming muddy, with wind and waves churning and fish and dragons stirring it from within, leaving nowhere on which a person can rely; the conditions of that time make it so. It is also like the beginning of an eon of formation, when beings from the Heaven of Streaming Light fall to the ground and the ground causes them to develop desire; or like the gods of Trāyastriṃśa entering the Coarse and Harsh Garden and developing contentious minds because of that garden. These are called the aspects of the turbidity of the eon.
The aspect of the turbidity of afflictions has five similes. Greed is like the ocean receiving a hundred rivers and never being satisfied. Anger is like a poisonous snake drawing in venom and disturbing the world. Delusion is dark, stubborn, and intractable, blacker than lacquer and ink. Pride looks down from above, domineering and disregarding others without measure. Doubt is like a net: without faith, the real Dharma cannot be told to such a person. These are the aspects of the turbidity of afflictions.
The aspect of the turbidity of views is falsely claiming that a real person exists where there is no real subject, and denying that a true path exists where there actually is one. The sixteen views, sixty-two views, and others are like nets and dense forests in which people are bound and bent, unable to escape. This is the aspect of the turbidity of views.
The aspect of the turbidity of living beings is appropriating form and mind and establishing a controlling subject. It is also like birdlime, to which everything adheres. Living beings drift and wander through the six destinies, taking birth everywhere. In reality they are impoverished and short-lived, yet they are provisionally named long-lived and wealthy. This is the aspect of the turbidity of living beings.
The aspect of the turbidity of life is arising in the morning and dying by night, appearing during the day and vanishing by evening. It turns like waves and coils like smoke, never pausing for an instant. Such is the aspect of the turbidity of life. The aspects of the five turbidities are numerous and cannot all be described.
Next is the sequence in which they arise. The turbidities of afflictions and views are fundamental. From these two, the turbidity of living beings is formed. Once living beings exist, there is life that continuously sustains them. When these four turbidities pass through a period of time, it is called the turbidity of the eon.
IV. First Question: If the Five Turbidities Obstruct the Great, Why Do Some Still Hear It?
The analytical questions now begin.
Question: If the five turbidities obstruct the Great Vehicle, why could some people in the Avataṃsaka assembly hear the great Dharma before removing the five turbidities?
Answer: This should be distinguished through four propositions.
First, sharp Great Vehicle faculties and heavy obstructions. Because the faculties are sharp, even heavy obstructions cannot obstruct. Those who first heard the Great Vehicle in the Avataṃsaka assembly in this land belong to this proposition.
Second, sharp faculties and light obstructions. The body lists only this combination and assigns no separate person to it.
Third, dull faculties and light obstructions. Those who hear the Great Vehicle in pure lands elsewhere belong to this proposition.
Fourth, dull faculties and heavy obstructions. People like Śāriputra in this land must first remove the five turbidities and can hear the Great Vehicle only afterward.
V. Second Question: Do the Five Turbidities Also Obstruct the Lesser Vehicle?
Question: Do the five turbidities obstruct the Lesser Vehicle?
Answer: This too should be distinguished through four propositions concerning the Lesser Vehicle.
First, sharp Lesser Vehicle faculties and light coverings: the coverings cannot become an obstruction. Śāriputra belongs to this class.
Second, sharp faculties and heavy coverings: the coverings still cannot become an obstruction. Aṅgulimāla belongs to this class.
Third, dull faculties and light coverings: these too do not form an obstruction. Panthaka belongs to this class.
Fourth, dull faculties and heavy coverings: only these form an obstruction. Such people cannot hear the Lesser Vehicle and cannot thereby be liberated.
VI. Third Question: Hearing the Great or Lesser outside the Avataṃsaka and Tripiṭaka Teachings
Question: Other people can hear the Great or Lesser Vehicle even though they are neither in the Avataṃsaka assembly nor within the Tripiṭaka Teaching. Why is this?
Answer: This should be explained in terms of the four teachings, with four gateways distinguished within each.
Those with sharp faculties and light coverings hear the gateway of neither emptiness nor existence and enter. Those with sharp faculties and heavy coverings hear the gateway of both emptiness and existence and enter. Those with dull faculties and light coverings hear the gateway of emptiness and enter. Those with dull faculties and heavy coverings hear the gateway of existence and enter.
The four gateways of two teachings are distinguished in relation to the Lesser Vehicle; those of the other two are distinguished in relation to the Great Vehicle. Correlating them one by one requires further careful investigation. 〔The remainder is abbreviated.〕
VII. Fourth Question: Why Is It Said Generally That They Obstruct the Great but Not the Lesser?
Question: Generally speaking, why do the five turbidities obstruct the Great Vehicle but not the Lesser Vehicle?
Answer: Because the turbidity of living beings is heavy, living beings falsely reckon the five aggregates to possess the four virtues of permanence, bliss, self, and purity. If they directly hear permanence and self, they will take the false to be correct. This is like the stubborn ignorance of an old physician who does not know that milk-medicine can be beneficial or harmful, does not know the source from which illness arises, and does not know when medicine should be allowed or prohibited. Because such a person understands nothing, the five turbidities obstruct the Great Vehicle.
The scripture says: “If I praised only the buddha vehicle, living beings would sink into suffering.” This is its meaning.
If living beings first hear impermanence, suffering, and emptiness, they reject birth-and-death, aspire to nirvāṇa, and break false reckonings. The five turbidities therefore do not obstruct the Lesser Vehicle. The scripture says: “While I was reflecting in this way, all the buddhas throughout the ten directions appeared and comforted and instructed me with pure Brahmā voices.” This is its meaning.
The four siddhāntas are further explained through the five turbidities. The turbidities of the eon and life belong to the worldly siddhānta. The turbidities of living beings and views belong to the siddhānta for each person. The turbidity of afflictions belongs to the counteractive siddhānta. The first three siddhāntas initially remove the five turbidities, after which the Great Vehicle siddhānta of ultimate meaning is taught to living beings.
Distinguished in terms of cause and effect, the turbidities of afflictions and views are two causes and the other three turbidities are effects. Distinguished in terms of persons and dharmas, the living being is one person and the other four turbidities are four dharmas. Distinguished in terms of dharmas and time, four turbidities are dharmas and the turbidity of the eon is one time.
Distinguished in terms of the three obstructions, there are two retributive obstructions and two afflictive obstructions, with karmic obstruction between them. Distinguished through the three provisional designations of causal formation, continuity, and relativity, the living being is a causally formed provisional designation, life a continuous provisional designation, and the other three turbidities can be understood by analogy as relative provisional designations. Distinguished through received, Dharma, and name provisional designations, the living being is the received provisional designation, the other four turbidities are Dharma provisional designations, and name provisional designation extends through both.
Distinguished in terms of ordinary and noble persons, the turbidities of afflictions and views belong to ordinary beings, while the other three extend through ordinary and noble persons. Distinguished in terms of long and short, life is short and the eon long, while the other three extend through both long and short. An eon is only a period of time; life is a time discussed together with the dharmas of form and mind.
Distinguished in terms of inner and outer, the turbidity of the eon extends through both, while the turbidity of life occurs only within the sentient body. Distinguished by what is harmed, the three minor disasters harm people but not external things, while the three great disasters harm external things but not people. Distinguished by the realms and destinies through which they extend, a minor eon occurs only in the human realm, a great eon extends through the form realm, and life extends through the five destinies and three realms.
The turbidity of the eon is shared by living beings, while each of the other four is distinct. A minor eon is only an eon of turbidity; a great eon extends through both the presence and absence of turbidity. Human life gradually diminishes from eighty thousand years to ten years, which is called one minor eon. Eighty cycles of increase and decrease are called a great eon.
VIII. Fifth Question: What Are the Five Purities?
Question: If there are five turbidities, what are the five purities?
Answer: They can be explained by analogy with the deviant and correct three poisons. The deviant three poisons are the five turbidities; the correct three poisons are the five purities. Pure lands elsewhere lack the deviant three poisons, so the obstruction of the five turbidities is lighter. The meaning can be understood by analogy. 〔The remainder is abbreviated.〕
The body uses only the deviant and correct three poisons as an analogy and does not list five fixed names for the five purities.
IX. Distinguishing the False and Encouraging the Genuine: Who Is a Genuine Disciple?
Beginning with “If my disciples call themselves,” the text enters the fourth section: distinguishing the false and encouraging the genuine. Buddha-disciples who can believe, receive, and understand are Buddha-disciples. Those unable to believe and understand are neither genuine disciples nor genuine arhats. This passage urges and presses the present assembly to believe, receive, and understand.
According to the scripture, it is divided into two passages: first, distinguishing the genuine and false; second, making exclusions and resolving doubts. Distinguishing the genuine and false has two further layers: first, those who have neither heard nor known are not genuine disciples; second, those who have heard but refuse to believe and receive become persons of overweening pride.
Worldly disciples follow the Dharma taught by their teachers, inherit the Dharma-lineage, and transmit the lamp. If they have neither heard nor known, there is no Dharma for them to follow. How could they be called disciples?
Because of the five turbidities, the Tathāgata formerly opened and taught the three vehicles; you followed the provisional Dharma and attained nirvāṇa. Because you could hear and know, you were called disciples. Now that the five turbidities have been removed and the Buddha teaches the one vehicle for you, why do you instead neither hear nor know?
Not hearing means not having heard the one teaching. Not knowing means not knowing the one practice. Being false means not according with the one principle. Not being disciples means not having accomplished the one class of persons. The four ones of teaching, practice, principle, and persons are fully correlated here.
Next, beginning where the scripture again addresses Śāriputra, is the second layer: disbelief makes one a person of overweening pride. This passage likewise urges them to give rise to faith.
Why? You call this your final body, but you still have immeasurable bodies and this is not the final body. You claim to have reached the ultimate, but in the simile the place of treasure still lies two hundred yojanas away and you have not actually reached the ultimate. If you have not attained but claim attainment, is that not overweening pride?
A genuine arhat, when the five turbidities have been removed and the faculties are clear and sharp, knows that the ultimate has not yet been reached and believes the real Dharma. Such a person knows that this is not the final body and therefore does not give rise to overweening pride. Knowing that the ultimate has not yet been reached yet believing and receiving the true ultimate is belief in the one principle. Being free of overweening pride accomplishes the one practice. The one teaching is what is believed. Being able to become a Buddha-disciple is the one class of persons.
X. Two Exclusions after the Buddha's Extinction
Beginning with “except after the Buddha's extinction,” the text enters the second major passage: first making exclusions, then resolving doubts.
The first exclusion is that after the Buddha's extinction, such a situation need not be judged a case of overweening pride. The second is that after the Buddha's extinction spiritual friends are difficult to encounter and profound scriptures difficult to understand, so this situation likewise need not be judged a case of overweening pride.
If the Buddha is present and teaching this scripture, but listeners still disbelieve and refuse to receive it, they are not genuine arhats and become persons of overweening pride. If someone attains arhatship only after the Buddha's extinction, clings one-sidedly to provisional scriptures, and disbelieves the perfect Dharma, it is provisionally allowed that this person not be judged a person of overweening pride.
Someone further asks: Although the Buddha has entered extinction, this scripture still remains in the world. If that person disbelieves and refuses to receive it, should this not still be overweening pride?
A further exclusion is made here. After the Buddha's extinction, although this scripture remains, people capable of explaining its wording and meaning are difficult to encounter. This prevents those who have attained arhatship from believing and understanding, so it is provisionally allowed that they not be judged persons of overweening pride. This does not mean that all disbelief after the Buddha's extinction becomes correct; the judgment of overweening pride is excluded according to whether a buddha is present and whether a person able to explain the scripture can be encountered.
XI. The Land with Remainder, Other Buddhas, and the Question and Answer from the Treatise
Next, the doubt is resolved.
Question: If people able to explain the scripture are difficult to encounter after the Buddha's extinction, do those who have attained arhatship enter nirvāṇa forever?
Answer: Although such a person gives rise to the thought of having attained extinction, after relinquishing this life that person will still be born in a land with remainder beyond the three realms. There, upon encountering other buddhas and hearing this scripture, the person can understand it decisively.
Fascicle Ninety-Three of the Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom, in its explanation of the Determination chapter, raises this question: “An arhat's body received from a former life must necessarily pass into extinction. Where does the arhat abide in order to complete the buddha path?”
It answers: “The causes and conditions of the contaminants in the three realms have been exhausted for an arhat, who is not born again in the three realms. Beyond the three realms are pure buddha-lands in which even the name affliction does not exist. Before the buddha of such a land, the arhat hears the Lotus Sūtra and can complete the buddha path.”
The Treatise then cites the Lotus Sūtra: “If arhats have not heard the Lotus, they suppose that they have attained extinction. In other lands I will explain this matter for them: all of you will become buddhas.”
Since the Treatise cites the Lotus Sūtra as proof, the present explanation of the Lotus Sūtra likewise uses the Treatise to elucidate it.
XII. Nanyue's Three Explanations, Master Yao, and a Further Alternative Interpretation
Master Nanyue gives three further explanations of “other buddhas.”
First, “other buddhas” means persons of the four reliances. An arhat encounters persons of the four reliances, hears this scripture, and attains decisive understanding.
Second, an arhat cultivates buddha-recollection samādhi and sees the buddhas throughout the ten directions. Those buddhas teach this scripture, and the arhat attains decisive understanding.
Third, when an ordinary practitioner reaches the extremity of suffering and gives rise to repentance, that person sees the buddhas throughout the ten directions teach the Dharma and likewise attains decisive understanding.
Master Yao says that a genuine arhat necessarily knows the Lotus directly and aspires to the Great Vehicle. Those of sharp faculties can know it themselves, while those of middling and dull faculties must know it through hearing; this is why the scripture speaks of hearing and knowing. How could a noble person after the Buddha's extinction be allowed not to have heard the Lotus, or to have heard yet been unable to believe, and then have to encounter another buddha before understanding? Even ordinary beings in the Final Dharma can believe, how much more noble persons. Thus the scripture's words “except after the Buddha's extinction” should refer to ordinary beings.
Someone else presents the opposite explanation. Ordinary beings have not yet realized the characteristics of dharmas; what they see is unclear and their attachments are not firm, so they instead believe easily. Arhats have realized the characteristics of dharmas; what they see is clear and their attachments firm. Upon suddenly hearing a teaching different from what they knew before, they may not immediately believe and receive. This is why the scripture speaks of disbelief; the principle must be so.
This interpretation further cites Śāriputra's doubt: “Could Māra have assumed the Buddha's form to disturb my mind?” According to this explanation, the one who encounters another buddha and attains decisive understanding is an arhat, not an ordinary being. 〔The remainder is abbreviated.〕
The root treatise finally says that this is merely a different interpretation and does not adopt its meaning.
XIII. Why the Buddha's Words Contain No Falsehood
Beginning where the scripture again addresses Śāriputra is the fifth section: explaining that the Buddha's words contain no falsehood in order to stop the assembly's impulse to slander. This section has three layers.
First, living beings are exhorted to believe the reality taught by Śākyamuni Buddha: you should single-mindedly believe and understand, receive and uphold the Buddha's words.
Second, living beings are exhorted to believe all buddhas: what the buddhas teach contains no falsehood. Because the path practiced by all buddhas is the same, it should be believed and received all the more.
Third, the truthfulness of the Buddha's words is concluded: apart from the one buddha vehicle taught, there is no other vehicle; there is only the buddha vehicle.

If there is only one buddha vehicle, why first teach three? The Śākyamuni chapter begins by placing together two things that seem contrary: there is only one reality that the buddhas intend to reveal, yet according to what is appropriate for living beings they first open three vehicles. If one looks only at the final, single buddha vehicle, skillful means appear to be a superfluous detour. If one looks only at the many skillful means immediately at hand, the one vehicle can easily be mistaken for one more road added alongside the others.
This chapter occupies the pivot of opening the provisional to reveal the real. It does not merely declare three first and one afterward. It also asks: Why are living beings unable to hear the real directly from the beginning? Under what conditions can the turbidities obstruct, and under what conditions can they not? Why must those who have already benefited through provisional Dharmas still believe and receive the one vehicle? Should everyone unable to believe and understand after the Buddha's extinction be judged a person of overweening pride? The whole chapter advances from the Buddha's method of teaching to the genuineness and falsity of those who hear, and only at the end concludes that the Buddha's words are not false.
I. Skillful Means Do Not Depart from the Real; They Enable the Real to Be Heard
Śākyamuni teaches three first and one afterward, no differently from the four buddhas above. Living beings have various desires, and their minds each have their own attachments. The past is called faculty, the present desire, and the future nature. The Buddha's teaching therefore cannot attend only to what he knows while ignoring what living beings can receive now.
Skillful means here do not transform the real into another reality, nor are they a temporary deception of living beings. In accord with what is appropriate, they open the provisional Dharmas of the three vehicles so that those unable to hear directly first have a gateway through which to enter. When the scripture later says that all skillful means are for attaining the one buddha vehicle, the former differences reveal their common direction: the Dharma taught returns to one, the path practiced returns to one, and the principle known also returns to one.
This sequence is crucial. If the three vehicles and one vehicle are made into mutually exclusive sides, one cannot explain why the Buddha first teaches three. If the three vehicles are treated directly as ultimate, one cannot explain why the one must still be revealed. Three first and one afterward means that the sequence in which living beings receive the teaching has earlier and later stages, while the work the Buddha intends to accomplish has never been divided.
II. How Can the Pure, Single Reality Be Voiced in a Turbid Age?
The real Dharma is pure, limpid, and undivided like empty space; within it there are originally no distinctions among different vehicles. Yet if the single reality cannot be received by the living beings before the Buddha, teaching it directly still cannot accomplish transformation. The five turbidities do not add stains to the real. They explain the conditions of those hearing the Dharma: afflictions, views, the living being constructed by appropriating them, and the continuity of life gather together within one period and appear as the turbidity of the eon.
The turbidity of the eon has no independent essence, nor does the turbidity of living beings. The former is a provisional name for the four turbidities gathered within one time; the latter is a provisional name established through views, pride, and retribution. Thus the five turbidities are not five separate pieces of filth but an interdependent structure. Afflictions and views are fundamental. From them living beings are formed; with living beings comes continuity of life; and when these four pass through time, it is called the turbidity of the eon.
The chapter uses a succession of images to make this structure visible. The turbidities converge like rushing, muddy water; when winds and waves arise, fish and dragons stir it further from within. Greed is like an ocean that knows no satisfaction. Anger is like a poisonous snake drawing in venom. Delusion is darker than lacquer and ink. Pride overbears and disregards without measure. Doubt is like a net that refuses to believe and receive the real. The turbidity of views adds another layer of nets and dense forests. The turbidity of living beings adheres everywhere like birdlime, while the turbidity of life turns like waves and coils like smoke, never pausing for an instant.
When water is turbid, the problem is not that its nature has become something else. Converging conditions prevent it from becoming clear. In the same way, the real does not become unreal because of the five turbidities. Rather, amid greed, anger, delusion, pride, doubt, and manifold views, living beings twist what they hear back into their existing attachments. The Buddha therefore establishes the provisional not to lower the destination, but first to treat the obstructions that keep people from understanding and believing.
III. Five Rounds of Questions and Answers Keep One Statement from Hardening into Dogma
If one remembers only that “the five turbidities obstruct the Great,” counterexamples immediately arise: why can some people hear the Great before removing the turbidities? The chapter does not evade the counterexample. It crosses sharp and dull faculties with heavy and light obstructions to form four propositions. With sharp faculties and heavy obstructions, even heavy obstructions cannot obstruct. With dull faculties and heavy obstructions, the turbidities must first be removed before the Great can be heard. Whether the Dharma can be heard depends not only on obstruction, but also on faculty.
The second question applies the same method to the Lesser Vehicle. Sharp faculties with light coverings, sharp faculties with heavy coverings, and dull faculties with light coverings—the first three do not constitute an obstruction. Only dull faculties with heavy coverings are truly obstructed. Thus “obstructing the Great but not the Lesser” is not an unconditional universal claim, but a general explanation made in relation to persons and Dharma.
The third question further points out that some people hear the Great or Lesser outside the two teaching scenes already discussed. The answer does not add another fixed class. Instead, the four gateways of neither emptiness nor existence, both emptiness and existence, emptiness, and existence correspond respectively to different combinations of faculty and covering. Most importantly, the final proposition explicitly says that those of dull faculties with heavy coverings hear the gateway of existence and enter. The function of every gateway must be returned to the person it addresses; one cannot close a gateway to living beings in advance merely because it appears shallower.
The fourth question asks why it is said generally that the turbidities obstruct the Great but not the Lesser; the fifth asks, if there are five turbidities, what the five purities are. The five questions advance layer by layer, preventing the five turbidities from becoming a blanket judgment imposed whenever living beings are encountered. What they truly require is discrimination: what faculty, what obstruction, what Dharma is heard, through which gateway one enters, and whether the claimed obstruction is only a general account or an exhaustive principle.
IV. The Old Physician's Failure Lies Not in Possessing Medicine, but in Not Knowing When to Use It
The old-physician simile in the fourth question turns the abstract relation of faculty and obstruction into the treatment of illness. Living beings mistake the five aggregates for permanence, pleasure, self, and purity. If they immediately hear permanence and self, they may take their existing false attachments to be the Buddha-Dharma. The old physician has three faults: he does not know that milk-medicine can be beneficial or harmful, does not know where the illness originates, and does not know when medicine should be allowed and when prohibited.
None of these three failures can be omitted. If one cannot distinguish beneficial from harmful milk, the same medicine will always be judged either usable or unusable. If one does not know the source of illness, one does not know what must be treated now. If one does not know allowance and prohibition, even medicine in hand will be administered at the wrong time. The Buddha first teaches impermanence, suffering, emptiness, enabling people to reject birth-and-death and aspire to nirvāṇa. This first breaks the false reckoning that takes what is not so to be so. Once the turbidities have been removed, he then teaches the Great Vehicle's ultimate meaning.
The correlations of the four siddhāntas unfold along this same course of treatment. Eon and life reveal the age shared by living beings. Living beings and views correspond to the people receiving the teaching. Afflictions are the illness to be treated. The first three functions initially remove the turbidities so that ultimate meaning can be taught. Ultimate meaning is not replaced by the first three; they establish the conditions under which people can hear it.
The dense distinctions that follow repeatedly correlate the five turbidities with one another. They do not add more turbidities, but show that the same set of five can be rearranged according to the meaning under discussion. In terms of cause and effect, afflictions and views are two causes and the other three turbidities are effects. The remaining groups each have their own arrangements.
V. The Mark of a Genuine Disciple Lies Not in Self-Designation, but in the Capacity to Hear, Know, Believe, and Receive
Once the five turbidities have been explained, the chapter turns from how the Buddha establishes the teaching to how disciples receive it. Some call themselves arhats or pratyekabuddhas, yet have neither heard nor known that the Buddha teaches only bodhisattvas. Others have already heard, yet refuse to believe and receive. The former are not genuine disciples; the latter become persons of overweening pride.
The simile of a disciple means following the teacher's Dharma and inheriting the transmission of the lamp. Without hearing and knowing, there is no Dharma to follow. If one has heard the one vehicle but refuses to believe and receive it, benefits previously attained through provisional Dharmas will be mistaken for the final destination. The chapter therefore uses the four ones to reexamine the name disciple: not hearing means not hearing the one teaching; not knowing means not knowing the one practice; being false means not according with the one principle; and not being a disciple means not becoming one of the one class of persons.
Overweening pride is also revealed through two self-designations: declaring this the final body while bodies are still immeasurable, and declaring attainment of the ultimate while the place of treasure in the simile remains two hundred yojanas away. The problem is not pride in an ordinary sense, but declaring the unfinished to be complete. Knowing that one is not yet ultimate makes it possible to believe and receive the true ultimate. Knowing that this is not one's final body removes the need to protect one's attainment through self-designation.
Opening the provisional to reveal the real therefore changes not only a map of teachings but also how disciples regard themselves. If one requires the Buddha to reveal the real but refuses to let one's own attainment be examined anew, revelation still remains outside the scripture. Genuine belief and reception allow teaching, practice, principle, and persons together to return from self-designation to actuality.
VI. The Exclusions Made after the Buddha's Extinction Do Not Relax the Real; They Honestly Recognize Conditions
After rigorously distinguishing genuine and false disciples, the chapter immediately makes two exclusions. Only one who disbelieves while the Buddha is present and personally teaching this scripture clearly constitutes a person of overweening pride. An arhat who attains the fruit only after the Buddha's extinction has no Buddha present and clings one-sidedly to provisional scriptures heard before, so that person may provisionally be excluded from this judgment. Even when this scripture remains, a person able to understand its meaning is difficult to encounter; this forms the second exclusion.
This does not mean that disbelief after the Buddha's extinction is unproblematic, nor does it withdraw the one vehicle. It simply refuses to apply the same reproach when conditions differ. The Buddha's direct teaching while present differs from encountering only transmitted words; the presence of a spiritual friend able to explain their meaning differs from having no one to clarify a profound scripture. If such differences are ignored and the same judgment made merely because the result appears identical, one loses precisely the capacity for discrimination established by the five rounds of questions and answers.
The exclusions therefore do not cancel the distinction between genuine and false. The distinction preserves the ultimate indicated by the Buddha's words; the exclusions preserve honesty toward concrete living beings. The former prevents claims of attainment without attainment, while the latter prevents rashly condemning people who have not encountered the necessary conditions. One side does not loosen the real; the other does not flatten circumstances.
VII. Decisive Understanding Means That the Unfinished Road Can Still Lead to the Buddha Vehicle
Someone therefore asks: If people able to explain the scripture are difficult to encounter after the Buddha's extinction, do those who have attained arhatship enter nirvāṇa forever? The answer does not leave them within their original self-judgment. Rather, after relinquishing life they are born in a land with remainder beyond the realms, encounter another buddha, hear this scripture, and attain decisive understanding of this Dharma.
The chapter further cites a treatise's question and answer. Those whose causes and conditions of the contaminants in the three realms have been exhausted are not born again in the three realms, yet they can hear the Lotus Sūtra before buddhas in pure buddha-lands beyond the three realms and complete the buddha path. The treatise also cites a later passage from the same scripture as proof: when some people suppose that they have attained extinction, the Buddha still teaches them in other lands, causing them ultimately to become buddhas. This gives direction to the exclusions. Provisionally not judging someone a person of overweening pride does not mean leaving that person forever in disbelief, but still placing them on a road on which they must eventually hear the scripture, attain decisive understanding, and become a buddha.
Several old interpretations then explain other buddhas and decisive understanding from the perspectives of the four reliances, buddha-recollection samādhi, repentance and seeing a buddha, and the relative difficulty with which ordinary and noble persons believe and receive. The root treatise preserves their differences and then explicitly says that the final interpretation is not adopted. It neither conceals disagreement nor abandons its own conclusion merely because it records alternative interpretations. Different readings can be placed side by side, and the final reading can still be expressly rejected.
VIII. Absence of Falsehood Is the Final Belief and Reception of the Whole Chapter
The chapter concludes without adding another theoretical system, closing with three layers of exhortation to believe: first believe what Śākyamuni teaches, then believe what the buddhas teach, and finally conclude that there is no other vehicle, only the one buddha vehicle. This conclusion illuminates the entire chapter retrospectively. Three first and one afterward are not two contradictory kinds of buddha-speech, and establishing the provisional because of the five turbidities does not depart from the one vehicle. The buddhas distinguish and teach three according to what is appropriate for living beings, but what they intend to accomplish has always been the one buddha vehicle.
Believing that the Buddha's words are not false therefore does not require listeners to skip every question. The five rounds of analysis have unfolded those questions; the two exclusions have clarified exceptions. Alternative interpretations are recorded one by one, and situations that have not yet reached the ultimate are not concealed. Precisely because all these differences have been truthfully placed, the final one buddha vehicle is not a slogan that suppresses questions, but the direction in which all skillful means, counteractions, hearing, knowing, and decisive understanding converge.
Through the Eye of the Wenjuji
Zhanran first calibrates faculty, desire, and nature through the distinction between scripture and commentary. He states explicitly, “The scripture contains only the two kinds of desire and nature. Where these two exist, faculty must also exist, and so faculty is added in their corresponding explanation”〔T34n1719 0238c14〕. Faculty is added by Zhiyi to explain desire and nature and cannot be described as a third item originally listed in the root scripture. The Wenjuji then unfolds their continuity across the three times: habitual seeds from former lives produce present desire, while habituation through desire forms future nature〔0238c15–0238c20〕.
Concerning the establishment of the provisional because of the five turbidities, the Wenjuji correlates carrying two with the Prajñāpāramitā teachings, carrying three with the Vaipulya teachings, and three alone and five alone with Deer Park〔0238c25–0238c26〕. This gives a concrete reading of the four forms of provisional Dharma compressed by Zhiyi. Yet the mirror immediately records two alternative interpretations and respectively judges them unreasonable and therefore not adopted〔0238c27–0239a05〕. The mirror does not merely supplement a fixed correlation table; it also preserves how such tables were analyzed.
Concerning the essences and aspects of the five turbidities, Zhanran says that the four turbidities increase and gather, and therefore the minor eon receives the name turbid〔0239a29〕. He reads rushing, muddy water as the general simile for the turbidity of the eon〔0239b11〕, divides the turbidity of living beings into the two levels of provisional naming and cyclic wandering〔0239c21〕, and divides the turbidity of life into Dharma, simile, and application〔0239c23〕. These outlines illuminate the internal layers of Zhiyi's long sentences without creating new essences for the five turbidities.
Within the five rounds of analysis, the Wenjuji especially tightens the wording of the first question. Of the four propositions, the first answers the Avataṃsaka question, the last explains why the Great is not taught at the beginning of the gradual teaching, and the two middle propositions concern differences among lands〔0240a05–0240a06〕. Thus it says, “Thus the question of obstructing the Great is only a general statement”〔0240a09〕. The old physician's three failures in the fourth question are likewise explained in sequence as failing to recognize milk-medicine, failing to recognize the illness, and failing to recognize the allowance and prohibition involved in administering medicine〔0240b27–0240b29〕. The statement “The gateway of the four siddhāntas broadly answers the question of why the five turbidities obstruct the Great but not the Lesser”〔0240c20〕 keeps the four siddhāntas within the same question and answer rather than opening a separate fifth question.
The dense distinctions listed by Zhiyi receive in the mirror such names as cause and effect, persons and dharmas, dharmas and time, the three obstructions, two sets of three provisional designations, ordinary and noble, long and short, carrying and not carrying, inner and outer, harmful and harmless, the five destinies and three realms, and common and distinct〔0240c22–0241b06〕. These names make it easier to identify the axis of comparison at each turn. They are headings made explicit by Zhanran, not thirteen titles written one by one in Zhiyi's original passage.
After the distinction of the false and encouragement of the genuine, the Wenjuji makes the attribution to Nanyue especially clear: “‘Below “Nanyue,” all three explanations are Nanyue's explanations’”〔0241c04〕. The three interpretations concerning the four reliances, the accomplishment of buddha-recollection contemplation, and ordinary beings driven by suffering to repent therefore cannot attach only the first interpretation to Nanyue. Zhanran also disagrees with Master Yao's claim that the one who encounters another buddha is an ordinary being. Of the later alternative interpretation using Śāriputra's suspicion that Māra was speaking as its example, he says that it still contradicts the scripture's words about decisive understanding. The final sentence judges, “This too contradicts the scripture's words about decisive understanding; therefore it says, ‘This meaning is not adopted’”〔0242a04〕.
At this point the mirror turns directly to the verses and establishes no separate explanatory section for absence of falsehood. This silence does not displace the final section. Zhiyi's own threefold outline and the root scripture's exhortation to believe are complete. Where an explanation exists, the mirror unfolds it layer by layer; where no separate explanation is given, it does not compose a sentence on the ancient master's behalf. This precisely demonstrates that interpretation can go deep while the boundaries of transmission remain intact.

This unit is the chapter in the five-buddha section that extensively explains Śākyamuni Buddha. Zhiyi first gathers Śākyamuni's teaching under opening the provisional and revealing the real, then uses the five turbidities to explain why provisional means are established. Through five analytical questions he next distinguishes faculties, obstructions, and the Dharma heard; finally he distinguishes the false to encourage the genuine, makes exclusions and resolves doubts, and concludes with the absence of falsehood in the Buddha's words. The attached root scripture is concentrated in Śākyamuni's prose passage in the Skillful Means chapter, while parallel passages also involve the later verse of the same chapter, the Conjured City chapter, and the Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom. Variant readings and old interpretations are recorded side by side without adjudicating among them.
I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
The strict domain is T34n1718〔0052c02–0054a28〕, containing 2,253 Han characters. 〔0052c02〕 is the fascicle title and 〔0052c04〕 the author line; the doctrinally outlined body begins with 「第二、廣釋迦章」 tr. “Second, the extensive Śākyamuni chapter”〔0052c05〕 and ends with 「無有餘乘,唯一佛乘」 tr. “There is no other vehicle, only the one buddha vehicle”〔0054a28〕. The following words on the same line, 「第二偈頌有一百二十一行」 tr. “Second, the verse has one hundred and twenty-one lines,” have already opened the next unit and are excluded from this domain.
This chapter belongs to the prose Dharma-teaching section of the Skillful Means chapter in the Trace Gate. It follows the four-buddha chapter and precedes the verse. The text itself lists six meanings but explicitly says that praise of the rarity of the Dharma is absent, so there are in fact five sections; no sixth section is supplied. Following the transitions in the body, it can be divided as follows:
| No. | Domain | Content in the Root Treatise |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0052c05–0052c07 | General heading of the extensive Śākyamuni chapter: of the six meanings, praise of the rarity of the Dharma is absent; the five sections are opening the provisional, revealing the real, using the five turbidities to explain provisional means, distinguishing the false to encourage the genuine, and absence of falsehood |
| 2 | 0052c07–0052c14 | Opening the provisional and revealing the real: three first and one afterward; explanation of faculty, desire, and nature; distinction of one teaching, one practice, and one principle |
| 3 | 0052c14–0052c22 | General heading of using the five turbidities to explain provisional means: within the one real Dharma there are originally no two or three; because the turbidities are severe, carrying two, carrying three, three alone, and five alone are established |
| 4 | 0052c22–0052c29 | Four distinctions and essences of the five turbidities: announcing the number, listing the names, their essences and marks, and explanatory conclusion; eon and living beings have no distinct essence, while afflictions, views, and life each have their referent |
| 5 | 0052c29–0053a19 | Marks and sequence of the five turbidities: eon, afflictions, views, living beings, and life are explained in sequence, concluding that two turbidities are fundamental |
| 6 | 0053a19–0053a25 | First question: if the five turbidities obstruct the Great, why do those in the Avataṃsaka hear the Great before removing the turbidities? Answered through four propositions |
| 7 | 0053a25–0053a29 | Second question: do the five turbidities obstruct the Lesser? Answered through four Lesser Vehicle propositions |
| 8 | 0053a29–0053b06 | Third question: hearing the Great and Lesser outside the Avataṃsaka and Tripiṭaka teachings; answered through the four gateways of the four teachings |
| 9 | 0053b07–0053b27 | Fourth question: why is it said generally that they obstruct the Great but not the Lesser? Answered through the old physician, two verses, the four siddhāntas, and distinctions through many gateways |
| 10 | 0053b27–0053c01 | Fifth question: what are the five purities? Answered by extending the pattern of deviant and correct three poisons |
| 11 | 0053c01–0053c04 | General division of distinguishing the false to encourage the genuine: distinguishing genuine and false, and making exclusions and resolving doubts |
| 12 | 0053c04–0053c19 | Distinguishing genuine and false: two levels, not hearing and not knowing, and hearing but not believing; the four ones distinguish disciples from persons of overweening pride |
| 13 | 0053c19–0053c28 | Exclusions: after the Buddha's extinction no buddha is present, and a person who understands the scripture's meaning is difficult to encounter; hence two successive exclusions |
| 14 | 0053c28–0054a10 | Resolving doubt: whether arhats enter nirvāṇa forever; clarified through a land with remainder, other buddhas, and the question and answer in the Treatise of Explanations |
| 15 | 0054a10–0054a23 | Nanyue's three explanations, Master Yao's position, and the later position of “someone”; closes by not adopting the latter meaning |
| 16 | 0054a23–0054a28 | Three levels of absence of falsehood: exhorting belief in Śākyamuni, exhorting belief in the buddhas, and concluding with the one buddha vehicle alone |
The preceding bridge in the Fahua Wenjuji explains from 「五佛章門皆須具六」 tr. “The chapter-gate of the five buddhas must in every case contain all six”〔T34n1719 0238b20〕 that the Śākyamuni chapter lacks only the first meaning. The first explicit entrance attaching scripture in this unit is 「《經》「知諸眾生」至「方便力而為說法」,即感應相對也。」 tr. “The scripture, from ‘knowing all living beings’ through ‘through the power of provisional means teaches the Dharma,’ is the correspondence of stimulus and response”〔0238c10〕. The mirror crosses the fascicle boundary while continuing its explanation of the fourth question on the five turbidities and concludes at 「此亦違經決了之語,故云「不用此義」。」 tr. “This too contradicts the scripture's words concerning decisive understanding; hence it says, ‘this meaning is not adopted’”〔0242a04〕. The next sentence, 「次釋偈頌。」 tr. “Next, the verse is explained”〔0242a05〕, has already turned to the next unit. The Record does not establish a separate explanation of absence of falsehood between these two sentences, so the last section is set out from the root treatise's own outline and the root scripture without fabricating a mirror passage.
II. Formation and Transmission
Shenjiong's preface at the head of the fascicle records 「迺是灌頂法師私記,合二十卷」 tr. “It is Master Guanding's private record, comprising twenty fascicles”〔T34n1718 0001a23–0001a24〕 and further records that Monk Lang ordered and established the text in the wuxu year of the Tang Tianbao era. After the fascicle title, the present unit still bears only 「天台智者大師說」 tr. “Taught by the Great Master Zhizhe of Tiantai”〔0052c04〕. The doctrinal teaching is therefore attributed to Zhiyi, while its textual record is attributed to Guanding and its later ordering. Shenjiong also says that in establishing the text they 「方始條倫」 tr. “only then began to put it in order,” without carelessly seeking uniformity amid differences or arbitrarily adding and subtracting〔from 0001a25〕. Because the original preface supplies no second witness for item-by-item comparison, the ordering layer is recorded only as it describes itself and is not used to decide the earlier or later form of each graph.
The domain preserves sixteen Taishō variant groups and four transmitted inline annotations, showing that the present wording contains variants open to examination; these materials, however, do not constitute a complete genealogy before the ordering. The body follows the Taishō text, and every reading of witness Jia is recorded alongside it.
III. Sutra Passages Explained and Works Cited
1. Reanchoring the Root Scripture in This Edition
The root scripture explained by this unit is preserved in full in this repository's sealed edition of the Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma. Śākyamuni's opening of the provisional and revelation of the real in the Skillful Means chapter appear at line 102 of 02_fangbian_source.md; the five turbidities and genuine and false disciples at line 103; and overweening pride, the exclusions after extinction, decisive understanding through another buddha, and the exhortation to believe the absence of falsehood at line 104. Its principal Taishō domain is T09n0262〔0007b18–0007c09〕. The later verses of the same chapter appear at〔0009c13–0009c20〕, and Śāriputra's doubt that Māra might be acting as the Buddha appears at〔0011a21〕. The other-land buddha and five-hundred- and three-hundred-yojana scenes from the Conjured City chapter are further reanchored at lines 150 and 152 of this repository's 07_huachengyu_source.md.
2. Opening the Provisional and Revealing the Real
| Wenju Wording Attached | Present T09n0262 Wording | Record of the Relation |
|---|---|---|
“I too am now like this”〔T34n1718 0052c07〕 | 「舍利弗! “Śāriputra! I too am now like this, knowing that living beings have manifold desires to which their deepest minds are attached”〔T09n0262 0007b18〕 | The commentary omits Śāriputra and 復; the wording of the present text is not inserted into its citation |
“knowing that living beings have manifold desires”〔T34n1718 0052c09〕 | 「知諸眾生有種種欲,深心所著,」 tr. “knowing that living beings have manifold desires to which their deepest minds are attached”〔T09n0262 0007b19〕 | The present wording agrees; the three times of faculty, desire, and nature are the commentary's explanation |
“that to which their deepest minds are attached”〔T34n1718 0052c11〕 | 「深心所著,隨其本性」 tr. “that to which their deepest minds are attached, following their original nature”〔T09n0262 0007b19–0007b20〕 | The commentary explains deep attachment as faculty; the root scripture does not list faculty as a third item |
tr. “Through various causes and conditions, similes, and expressions, they teach the Dharma by the power of provisional means”〔T09n0262 0007b20〕 | The commentary uses an abbreviated citation and explains it as opening the provisional Dharma of the three vehicles according to what is appropriate |
“All of this is so that they may attain the one buddha vehicle”〔T34n1718 0052c12〕 | 「舍利弗! tr. “Śāriputra! All of this is so that they may attain the one buddha vehicle and the wisdom of all modes”〔T09n0262 0007b21〕 | From buddha vehicle, all, and the wisdom known, the commentary distinguishes one teaching, one practice, and one principle |
3. Establishing the Provisional through the Five Turbidities and Genuine and False Disciples
| Wenju Wording Attached or Explained | Present T09n0262 Wording | Record of the Relation |
|---|---|---|
“Throughout the ten directions there are not even two vehicles, much less three”〔T34n1718 0052c14〕 | 「舍利弗! tr. “Śāriputra! In the worlds throughout the ten directions there are not even two vehicles, much less three”〔T09n0262 0007b22〕 | The commentary omits the address and “in the worlds” |
| Announcing the number and listing the names are as in the text〔T34n1718 0052c23〕 | 「諸佛出於五濁惡世,所謂劫濁、煩惱濁、眾生濁、見濁、命濁。」 tr. “The buddhas appear in evil worlds of the five turbidities: the turbidity of the eon, the turbidity of afflictions, the turbidity of living beings, the turbidity of views, and the turbidity of life”〔T09n0262 0007b23〕 | The commentary does not copy the five names again but proceeds directly to their essences and marks |
“in the disordered time of the turbidity of the eon”〔T34n1718 0052c25〕 | 「劫濁亂時,眾生垢重,慳貪嫉妬,成就諸不善根故」 tr. “In the disordered time of the turbidity of the eon, living beings are heavily defiled, stingy, greedy, and jealous, and therefore accomplish roots of every unwholesome kind”〔T09n0262 0007b25〕 | From this the commentary says that the four turbidities persist through time and establishes the provisional name “turbidity of the eon” |
“living beings are heavily defiled”〔T34n1718 0052c27〕 | The same sentence begins at〔T09n0262 0007b25〕 | From this the commentary says that the provisional name “living beings” is established by appropriating views, pride, and retribution |
“Within the one buddha vehicle they distinguish and teach three”〔T34n1718 0052c20〕 | 「諸佛以方便力,於一佛乘分別說三。」 tr. “Through the power of provisional means, the buddhas distinguish and teach three within the one buddha vehicle”〔T09n0262 0007b26〕 | The commentary abbreviates the subject and the power of provisional means, then unfolds carrying two, carrying three, five alone, and three alone |
| From “If my disciples claim...” onward〔T34n1718 0053c01〕 | 「舍利弗! “Śāriputra! If disciples of mine claim to be arhats or pratyekabuddhas...”〔T09n0262 0007b27〕 | The commentary further divides this into not hearing and not knowing, and hearing but not believing and receiving |
| Not hearing and not knowing〔T34n1718 0053c05〕 | 「不聞不知諸佛如來但教化菩薩事,此非佛弟子,非阿羅漢,非辟支佛。」 tr. “If they have not heard or known that the buddhas and tathāgatas teach only bodhisattvas, they are not disciples of the Buddha, not arhats, and not pratyekabuddhas”〔T09n0262 0007b28–0007b29〕 | The assignment of the four ones is the commentary's explanation and is not presented as the scripture's wording |
| Claiming final body and ultimate attainment〔T34n1718 0053c13–0053c15〕 | 「自謂已得阿羅漢,是最後身,究竟涅槃,便不復志求阿耨多羅三藐三菩提」 tr. “They claim that they have attained arhatship, that this is their final body, and that nirvāṇa is ultimate, and they no longer resolve to seek unsurpassed complete awakening”〔T09n0262 0007c01–0007c02〕 | The commentary counters their claim through the body's still being immeasurable and the two hundred yojanas still remaining |
| One who truly attains necessarily believes〔T34n1718 0053c15–0053c19〕 | 「若有比丘實得阿羅漢,若不信此法,無有是處。」 tr. “If a monk has truly attained arhatship, it is impossible that he would not believe this Dharma”〔T09n0262 0007c04〕 | From this the commentary positively explains that a genuine arhat does not generate overweening pride |
4. Exclusions after Extinction, Other Buddhas, and Absence of Falsehood
| Wenju Wording Attached or Summarized | Present T09n0262 Wording | Record of the Relation |
|---|---|---|
| From “except after the Buddha's extinction” onward〔T34n1718 0053c19〕 | 「除佛滅度後,現前無佛。」 tr. “Except after the Buddha's extinction, when no buddha is present”〔T09n0262 0007c05〕 | The commentary uses an abbreviated heading and then distinguishes two successive exclusions |
| A good person is difficult to encounter and the profound scripture difficult to understand〔T34n1718 0053c21〕 | 「佛滅度後,如是等經受持讀誦解義者,是人難得。」 tr. “After the Buddha's extinction, a person who receives, upholds, reads, recites, and understands the meaning of scriptures such as this is difficult to encounter”〔T09n0262 0007c06〕 | “The profound scripture is difficult to understand” is the commentary's summary |
| Encountering another buddha, hearing, and attaining decisive understanding〔T34n1718 0054a02〕 | 「若遇餘佛,於此法中便得決了。」 tr. “If they encounter another buddha, they will then attain decisive understanding of this Dharma”〔T09n0262 0007c07〕 | From this the commentary unfolds a land with remainder, the Treatise of Explanations, and interpretations by various masters |
tr. “You should single-mindedly believe and understand, and receive and uphold the Buddha's words”〔T34n1718 0054a25〕 | 「汝等當一心信解受持佛語。」 tr. “You should single-mindedly believe and understand, receive and uphold the Buddha's words”〔T09n0262 0007c08〕 | The commentary has an enumeration comma between believe-and-understand and receive-and-uphold; each witness retains its own wording |
“The buddhas' words contain no falsehood”〔T34n1718 0054a26〕 | 「諸佛如來言無虛妄」 tr. “The words of the buddhas and tathāgatas contain no falsehood”〔T09n0262 0007c08〕 | The commentary omits tathāgatas |
“There is no other vehicle, only the one buddha vehicle”〔T34n1718 0054a28〕 | 「無有餘乘,唯一佛乘。」 tr. “There is no other vehicle, only the one buddha vehicle”〔T09n0262 0007c09〕 | The core wording agrees; the present text has a full stop |
5. Later Verses of the Skillful Means Chapter
| Wenju Citation | Present T09n0262 Wording | Record of the Relation |
|---|---|---|
“If I praised the buddha vehicle, living beings would sink into suffering”〔T34n1718 0053b11〕 | 「我即自思惟:『若但讚佛乘,眾生沒在苦,不能信是法;」 tr. “I then reflected: ‘If I praised only the buddha vehicle, living beings would sink into suffering and be unable to believe this Dharma’”〔T09n0262 0009c13–0009c14〕 | The commentary has “if I,” while the present text has “if only”; the commentary's citation is abbreviated |
“When I reflected in this way, buddhas throughout the ten directions all appeared and consoled me with brahmā voices”〔T34n1718 0053b13–0053b14〕 | 「作是思惟時,十方佛皆現,梵音慰喻我:『善哉釋迦文!」 tr. “When I reflected in this way, buddhas throughout the ten directions all appeared and consoled me with brahmā voices: ‘Excellent, Śākyamuni!’”〔T09n0262 0009c19–0009c20〕 | The commentary stops at “me”; the present text continues with inner buddha-speech |
“Could Māra be acting as the Buddha to disturb my mind?”〔T34n1718 0054a21〕 | 「將非魔作佛,惱亂我心耶?」 tr. “Could Māra be acting as the Buddha, disturbing my mind?”〔T09n0262 0011a21〕 | The present text has a comma after buddha; the commentary does not |
6. Parallels in the Conjured City Chapter
| Exact Present T09n0262 Wording | Loc | Relation to This Passage |
|---|---|---|
“After my extinction, there will again be disciples who have not heard this scripture” | 0025c14 | A later instance of the scene of not hearing and not knowing |
“Not knowing or awakening to bodhisattva practice, they generate the thought of extinction regarding the merit they have attained” | 0025c15 | Corresponds to generating the thought of extinction |
tr. “I will become a buddha in another land under a different name” | 0025c16 | Root-scripture parallel for a land with remainder and another buddha |
“In that land they seek the Buddha's wisdom and hear this scripture” | 0025c18 | Explicitly says they hear this scripture in that land |
“They attain extinction only through the buddha vehicle; there is no other vehicle” | 0025c18 | Corresponds to the one buddha vehicle alone in this unit |
“It is like a dangerous and difficult evil road five hundred yojanas long” | 0025c26 | Total course in the conjured-city simile |
“After they had traveled three hundred yojanas on the dangerous road, he conjured a city” | 0026a04 | The city is conjured at the point where three hundred yojanas have been passed |
The root treatise's 「猶餘二百由旬」 tr. “two hundred yojanas still remain”〔T34n1718 0053c14〕 is a synthesis formed by subtracting the three hundred already passed from five hundred. The present scripture does not separately establish the same sentence. The meaning of the simile can therefore be stated, but the two hundred are not presented as a verbatim sentence from T09n0262.
7. The Treatise of Explanations and the Present Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom
| Wording Transmitted in T34n1718 | Present T25n1509 Wording | Verbal Difference |
|---|---|---|
“An arhat receives a body from a former life; the body must perish. Where does he dwell while completing the buddha path?”〔0054a03〕 | 「阿羅漢先世因緣所受身必應當滅,住在何處而具足佛道?」 tr. “The body received by an arhat through the causes and conditions of a former life must perish. Where does he dwell while completing the buddha path?”〔0714a09〕 | The commentary omits 阿, 因緣, and 當 |
“For an arhat, the causes and conditions of the contaminants in the three realms have been exhausted, and he is no longer born in the three realms”〔0054a05〕 | 「得阿羅漢時,三界諸漏因緣盡,更不復生三界。」 tr. “When one attains arhatship, the causes and conditions of all contaminants in the three realms have been exhausted, and one is no longer born in the three realms”〔0714a10〕 | The present text has “when attaining arhatship” and “all” |
“Beyond the three realms there are pure buddha-lands where even the name affliction does not exist”〔0054a06〕 | 「有淨佛土,出於三界,乃至無煩惱之名」 tr. “There are pure buddha-lands beyond the three realms, where even the name of affliction does not exist”〔0714a11〕 | The word order and the characters 乃至 and 之 differ |
tr. “Before a buddha in such a land, they hear the Lotus Sūtra and complete the buddha path”〔0054a06〕 | 「於是國土佛所,聞《法華經》,具足佛道。」 tr. “Before a buddha in such a land, they hear the Lotus Sūtra and complete the buddha path”〔0714a12〕 | The present text has a comma after the scripture title |
“There are arhats who, if they do not hear the Lotus, suppose that they have attained extinction”〔0054a08〕 | 「有羅漢,若不聞《法華經》,自謂得滅度」 tr. “There are arhats who, if they do not hear the Lotus Sūtra, suppose that they have attained extinction”〔0714a14〕 | The present text has a comma and the character 經 |
tr. “In another land I teach this matter for you; you will all become buddhas”〔0054a08〕 | 「我於餘國為說是事,汝皆當作佛。」 tr. “In another land I teach this matter for you; you will all become buddhas”〔0714a15〕 | The present text adds 當 |
The commentary labels this the explanation of the Chapter on Determination in fascicle ninety-three of the Treatise of Explanations. This unit records only the commentary's label and the present textual anchors; it neither adjudicates fascicle and chapter numbering nor overwrites the transmitted citations with present wording.
8. Present Parallels for the Old Physician and Milk-Medicine
The root treatise's three things unknown to the old physician form a summary, not a single continuous verbatim citation from the present Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra. The directly verifiable parallels are:
| Exact Present T12n0374 Wording | Loc | Correspondence |
|---|---|---|
“There was a physician whose nature was stubborn and perverse” | 0378a18 | The stubborn and perverse old physician |
“In treating all illnesses he used only milk-medicine and also did not know the root from which illness arose” | 0378a19 | Not knowing the source of illness |
tr. “That king did not distinguish whether this physician knew the beneficial or harmful, good or bad qualities of milk” | 0378a22 | Milk's beneficial and harmful, good and bad qualities |
“Only then did he know that the old physician was foolish and without wisdom” | 0378b04 | Parallel to the commentary's “stubborn and foolish” |
tr. “From now on you must no longer take the old physician's milk-medicine” | 0378b11 | First prohibiting milk-medicine |
tr. “For an illness such as the king's, one should take milk” | 0378b20 | Later permitting milk-medicine |
tr. “This milk-medicine is both poisonous harm and ambrosia” | 0378c03 | Benefit and harm, permission and prohibition |
The root treatise says only 「舊醫頑騃不知乳之好惡,不知病起根源,不知藥餌開遮」 tr. “The old physician, stubborn and foolish, does not know whether milk is beneficial or harmful, does not know the source from which illness arises, and does not know when medicines should be permitted or prohibited”〔T34n1718 0053b09〕. The apparatus therefore cross-reads this summary with dispersed scenes in the present text rather than combining them into a fabricated continuous passage.
9. Evidentiary Boundary of the Avataṃsaka Question
The root treatise says only 「五濁若障大,《華嚴》中未除濁而聞法者,何也?」 tr. “If the five turbidities obstruct the Great, why do those in the Avataṃsaka hear the Dharma before removing the turbidities?”〔T34n1718 0053a19〕 and uses 「此土《華嚴》初聞大乘者是也」 tr. “Those in this land who first heard the Great Vehicle in the Avataṃsaka are an example”〔0053a21〕 for the first proposition. The Record further says 「如華嚴中許有凡眾聞《華嚴經》」 tr. “As in the Avataṃsaka, where it is allowed that assemblies of ordinary beings hear the Avataṃsaka Sūtra”〔T34n1719 0239c29–0240a01〕. This domain provides no chapter, fascicle, or unique verbatim scriptural sentence for reverse lookup. It therefore records only that the question is posed through beings hearing the Great in the Avataṃsaka assembly before removing the turbidities, without fabricating a scriptural citation from memory.
10. Present Parallels for Citations in the Wenjuji
In unfolding time within the turbidity of the eon, the Record uses the Kośa's three minima and verses on measures. Its transmitted wording and the present text are:
| Wording Transmitted in T34n1719 | Present T29n1558 Wording | Record of the Relation |
|---|---|---|
“The Kośa establishes three minima: form, name, and time”〔0239a13〕 | 「極微字剎那,色名時極少。」 tr. “Atom, syllable, and moment are the minima of form, name, and time”〔0062a17〕 | The meaning agrees, but the sentence form differs |
“Atom, metal atom, water atom, hare-, sheep-, and ox-dust, crevice-dust, nit, louse, barley-grain, and finger-joint: each later is seven times the preceding”〔0239a14〕 | 「極微微金水,兔羊牛隙塵,蟣虱麥指節,後後增七倍」 tr. “Atom, metal atom, water atom, hare-, sheep-, and ox-dust, crevice-dust, nit, louse, barley-grain, and finger-joint: each later is seven times the preceding”〔0062a26–0062a27〕 | The graphs 蝨 and 虱 differ |
“One hundred and twenty moments make the measure of a tatkṣaṇa; sixty of these make a lava, and thirty of these a muhūrta”〔0239a19〕 | 「百二十剎那,為怛剎那量,臘縛此六十,此三十須臾」 tr. “One hundred and twenty moments make the measure of a tatkṣaṇa; sixty of these make a lava, and thirty of these a muhūrta”〔0062b13–0062b14〕 | The Record converts it into a prose sentence; the present text retains verse punctuation |
The Record further says 「十六知見具如《法界次第》」 tr. “The sixteen notions are set out fully in the Sequential Stages of the Dharma Realm”〔T34n1719 0239c07〕. The following can be verified in the present T46n1925:
| Exact Present T46n1925 Wording | Loc |
|---|---|
“The fifth initial gateway: the sixteen notions” | 0666c27 |
“First, self; second, living being; third, one who lives; fourth, one who has life” | 0666c28 |
“Thirteenth, receiver; fourteenth, one who causes receiving; fifteenth, knower; sixteenth, seer” | 0667a01 |
“The five dull agents: first, the agent of greed; second, the agent of anger; third, the agent of ignorance” | 0668b05 |
“Fourth, the agent of pride; fifth, the agent of doubt” | 0668b06 |
“The five sharp agents: first, the agent of the view of a body; second, the agent of extreme views; third, the agent of deviant views” | 0668b07 |
“Fourth, the agent of attachment to precepts; fifth, the agent of attachment to views” | 0668b08 |
tr. “Passing through the five aggregates of the three times, there are sixty-two views” | 0668c14 |
The Record cites the Vimalakīrti as 「凡夫有反復而聲聞無也」 tr. “Ordinary beings reciprocate, while śrāvakas do not”〔T34n1719 0241c15〕, while the present T14n0475 reads 「凡夫於佛法有返復,而聲聞無也。」 tr. “Ordinary beings reciprocate toward the Buddha-Dharma, while śrāvakas do not”〔0549b22〕. The graphs 反 and 返 differ, as does the presence or absence of “toward the Buddha-Dharma.”
The Record also transmits the sentence on the ten powers from the Great Treatise, 「世尊以是智力,善知眾生上中下根」 tr. “Through this power of wisdom, the World-Honored One well knows the superior, middling, and inferior faculties of living beings”〔T34n1719 0240b11〕. The present T25n1509 reads, concerning 「知眾生上下根智力」 tr. “the power of wisdom that knows the superior and inferior faculties of living beings,” that the Buddha knows living beings to have sharp, dull, or middling faculties〔0238c27–0238c28〕. These are parallels on the same matter of the power concerning faculties, not identical wording.
The Record's domain also explicitly names the Compassionate Flower Sūtra〔0239a26〕, Aniruddha and the Kośa's chapter on eons〔0239b23〕, the Large Perfection of Wisdom〔0239c03〕, the chapter on agents in the Vibhāṣā〔0239c17〕, the records on the third〔0240c07〕 and fifth〔0241a08〕 fascicles of the Great Calming and Contemplation, the three provisional designations in the Middle Treatise〔0241a01〕, and the three kinds of designation in the Great Treatise〔0241a05〕. Most are source indications or “as set out fully” references for which the root treatise supplies no bounded verbatim domain. This unit records those source indications without promoting them into scriptural or treatise quotations that have not been extracted one by one.
IV. Essential Explanations from the Wenjuji [the Mirror]
Zhanran carries the correspondence of stimulus and response at the entrance to this unit through opening the provisional, the five turbidities, and distinguishing the false to encourage the genuine. The table lists only the mirror's structural points; every adjudicative explanation is attributed to the Record and is not rewritten as Zhiyi's teaching.
| Wenju Node | Correspondence and Essential Explanation in the Wenjuji |
|---|---|
| Six meanings appearing as five sections〔0052c05〕 | 「總佛章中但有其四闕第五六,釋迦章中唯闕第一」 tr. “The general-buddha chapter has only four, lacking the fifth and sixth; the Śākyamuni chapter lacks only the first”〔0238b21〕, showing that the Śākyamuni chapter lacks only praise of the rarity of the Dharma |
| Faculty, desire, and nature〔0052c09–0052c11〕 | 「經中唯有欲性二種,若有此二必有於根,故加根對釋。」 tr. “In the scripture there are only the two kinds, desire and nature. If these two exist, faculty must also exist; therefore faculty is added and the three are explained in correspondence”〔0238c14〕. Faculty consists in past habituation capable of producing present desire; desire perfumes and becomes future nature〔0238c17–0238c20〕 |
| Establishing the provisional through the five turbidities〔0052c14–0052c21〕 | The Record unfolds carrying two as Perfection of Wisdom, carrying three as Vaipulya, and three alone and five alone as the Deer Park〔0238c25–0238c26〕, then immediately records and rejects two alternative interpretations |
| Eon and living beings having no distinct essence〔0052c23–0052c27〕 | 「見慢是因、果報是果,由見慢故招生死果」 tr. “Views and pride are the cause, and retribution is the effect; because of views and pride, the effect of birth and death is produced”〔0239a22〕. Because the four turbidities increase and gather within a time, the lesser eon is called a turbidity〔0239a29〕 |
| Simile of rushing and muddied water〔0053a03–0053a05〕 | 「由奔故昏,昏秖是濁,總譬劫濁。」 tr. “Because it rushes, it is muddied; muddiness is precisely turbidity. Taken together, this similes the turbidity of the eon”〔0239b11〕 |
| Five similes for the five dull agents〔0053a07–0053a10〕 | 「先明煩惱具列五鈍,各舉一喻可以思知。」 tr. “First, in explaining afflictions, it fully lists the five dull agents and gives one simile for each; their meanings can be known through reflection”〔0239b29〕 |
| Two sentences on the turbidity of views〔0053a10–0053a12〕 | The Record cross-reads the view of a body and deviant views, and further supplies attachment to precepts, attachment to views, and extreme views〔0239c05–0239c08〕. This supplementary list belongs only to the mirror explanation |
| Turbidities of living beings and life〔0053a12–0053a18〕 | For living beings, provisional naming is explained first and transmigration second〔0239c21〕. The turbidity of life is divided into Dharma, simile, and correlation; the sequence is an order of arising〔0239c23–0239c24〕 |
| Four propositions of the first question〔0053a19–0053a25〕 | 「初一句用答華嚴,後一句答漸初不說大意,中間兩句明土別耳。」 tr. “The first proposition answers the Avataṃsaka; the last answers the meaning of not teaching the Great at the beginning of the gradual teaching; the two in between explain differences among lands”〔0240a05–0240a06〕 |
| Four propositions of the second question〔0053a25–0053a29〕 | The first three do not constitute obstruction; only in the fourth, when faculties are dull and obscuration severe, is there obstruction〔0240a15–0240a16〕 |
| Four gateways of the third question〔0053a29–0053b06〕 | The Record uses hearing the Great and Lesser in the Vaipulya and Perfection of Wisdom periods as the setting〔0240a25〕 and further says that the times of maturation differ〔0240b05〕 |
| The old physician in the fourth question〔0053b07–0053b17〕 | The three things unknown are explained in sequence as not recognizing milk-medicine, not recognizing illness, and not recognizing when giving medicine should be permitted or prohibited〔0240b27–0240b29〕. The four siddhānta gateways answer this question throughout〔0240c20〕 |
| Many gateways in the fourth question〔0053b17–0053b27〕 | The Record explains in sequence cause and effect, persons and dharmas, Dharma and time, the three obstructions, two sets of three provisional designations, ordinary and noble, long and short, carrying and not carrying, inner and outer, harmful and harmless, the five paths and three realms, shared and distinct, and other gateways〔0240c22–0241b06〕 |
| The five purities in the fifth question〔0053b27–0053c01〕 | 「言「正三毒」者,他方淨土如阿閦國」 tr. “As for the words ‘correct three poisons,’ they refer to pure lands in other directions such as the land of Akṣobhya”〔0241b07〕. This does not license fabrication of five fixed names for the purities |
| Encouraging the genuine and overweening pride〔0053c01–0053c19〕 | 「敦真」 tr. “encouraging the genuine” means encouraging those with genuine attainment to believe and receive〔0241b09〕. The body is said still to be immeasurable because places of birth through transformation birth are many〔0241b13〕 |
| Land with remainder and other buddhas〔0053c28–0054a10〕 | The first explanation takes a buddha in a land with remainder as another buddha〔0241b17〕 and further says that the Great Treatise's question and answer in turn cites the Lotus as proof〔0241b26–0241b28〕 |
tr. “The three explanations below ‘Nanyue’ are all Nanyue's explanations”〔0241c04〕, showing that the four reliances, buddha-recollection samādhi, and repentance by ordinary beings are all positions of Nanyue |
| Master Yao and the later “someone”〔0054a13–0054a23〕 | The Record first counters Master Yao with a rhetorical question and then judges that the later master's interpretation also contradicts the words concerning decisive understanding〔0241c11–0242a05〕 |
At the verbal level the Record separately notes the graphs used for vipers and snakes, disturbance, and perversity〔0239c01–0239c02〕, and says that the nine characters including 「此直是異解」 tr. “This is simply an alternative interpretation” may need to be in plain type〔0241c24〕. The former are mirror-level textual explanations and the latter a typographic instruction; neither is identical with the sixteen Taishō collation notes in T34n1718.
V. Explanations of Various Masters
This unit expressly contains alternative interpretations and may not be falsely listed as having none. Two are recorded by the Record, while five groups appear in the root treatise's section distinguishing the false to encourage the genuine:
| Teacher or Witness | Content Transmitted | Root Treatise's or Record's Treatment |
|---|---|---|
| A position of “someone” recorded by the Record | 「單五三藏、單三通教。」 tr. “Five alone is the Tripiṭaka teaching; three alone is the Shared teaching”〔T34n1719 0238c27〕 | The Record immediately judges, 「此不應理」 tr. “This does not accord with principle” |
| A commentary witness seen by the Record | Explains no two as the Separate teaching and the Separate entering the Shared, and no three as the Shared teaching and the Separate and Perfect entering the Shared〔0238c28–0239a01〕 | The Record says that considering them alone differs from their mutual inclusion and therefore does not follow this reading〔0239a04–0239a05〕 |
| Nanyue's first explanation | 「餘佛者,四依也,羅漢遇之聞經決了。」 tr. “Other buddhas are the four reliances; when arhats encounter them, they hear the scripture and attain decisive understanding”〔T34n1718 0054a10〕 | The Record explicitly judges that the following three explanations all belong to Nanyue |
| Nanyue's second explanation | 「又羅漢修念佛定見十方佛,為說此經便得決了。」 tr. “Again, arhats cultivate buddha-recollection samādhi, see the buddhas throughout the ten directions, and, when those buddhas teach this scripture for them, attain decisive understanding”〔0054a11〕 | The Record says that when contemplation of the Buddha is accomplished, it elicits a buddha's teaching〔0241c10〕 |
| Nanyue's third explanation | 「又凡夫行人,苦到懺悔見十方佛為說,亦得決了。」 tr. “Again, ordinary practitioners who press their repentance to the utmost see the buddhas throughout the ten directions teaching for them and also attain decisive understanding”〔0054a12〕 | The Record judges this to be raising ordinary beings to imply all the more that it applies to noble ones〔0241c10–0241c11〕 |
| Master Yao | Genuine arhats know by themselves or through hearing; the words about encountering another buddha after the Buddha's extinction refer to ordinary beings〔0054a13–0054a18〕 | The Record does not agree with shifting those who encounter another buddha to ordinary beings〔0241c11–0241c14〕 |
| A later “someone” | Ordinary beings' shallow attachments make belief easy, while arhats' firm attachments make belief difficult; the position also invokes Śāriputra's doubt about Māra〔0054a18–0054a23〕 | The root treatise concludes, 「此直異解,不用此義也。」 tr. “This is simply an alternative interpretation; this meaning is not adopted”〔0054a23〕. The Record likewise judges that it contradicts the scripture's words concerning decisive understanding〔0242a04〕 |
The root treatise does not record only the meanings it adopts. Even when it ultimately declines to adopt one, it preserves in full the reasoning for that position. The apparatus therefore records each interpretation, neither deleting it because it is rejected nor turning a rejected position into the definition of this chapter.
VI. Terminology
| Term | Meaning in This Passage |
|---|---|
| Six meanings; five sections | In the six meanings the Śākyamuni chapter lacks praise of the rarity of the Dharma, so the body lists five sections; a passage is not missing |
| Faculties, natures, and desires of the five vehicles | The commentary explains living beings' faculties, desires, and natures through the five vehicles; the root scripture's wording lists only desires and original natures |
| Faculty, desire, and nature | The past is called faculty, the present desire, and the future nature; the Record further unfolds these as past seeds, present engagement with objects, and desire habituated into nature |
| Provisional means | Here the term concerns opening the provisional Dharma of the three vehicles according to what is appropriate; it is not generalized into every form of skillfulness |
| One teaching, one practice, one principle, one class of persons | The first section on opening the provisional and revealing the real lists the first three ones; one class of persons is completed only in distinguishing the false to encourage the genuine |
| Carrying two, carrying three, three alone, five alone | The root treatise uses these to explain how the provisional is established because of severe turbidities within the one real Dharma; the Record unfolds the specific teaching to which each belongs |
| Essence of the five turbidities | Eon and living beings have no distinct essence; afflictions have the five dull agents as essence, views the five sharp agents, and life the continuous sustaining of form and mind |
| Marks of the five turbidities | Eon, afflictions, views, living beings, and life are unfolded one by one; the order of listed names and the order of the account of essences and marks are not forced into identity |
| Continuous sustaining of form and mind | The continuity that sustains form and mind is the essence of the turbidity of life; the phrase is not interpreted as physical joining |
| Sixteen notions; sixty-two views | Marks of the turbidity of views; the detailed list is pointed by the Record toward the Sequential Stages of the Dharma Realm and is not retroactively inserted into the plain-language translation of the root sentence |
| Four gateways | Neither empty nor existent, both empty and existent, empty, and existent; the last proposition of the body expressly says that one enters by hearing the gateway of existence |
| Four siddhāntas | Eon and life correspond to the worldly; living beings and views to the individual; afflictions to the counteractive; after the turbidities are removed, the Great is taught through ultimate meaning |
| Two systems of three provisional designations | Causal combination, continuity, and relativity form one system; reception, dharmas, and names form another; the two groups may not be combined into one table |
| Overweening pride | Claiming final body and ultimate attainment and no longer resolving to seek; not a general name for ordinary arrogance |
| Land with remainder; other buddhas | The commentary first says that after relinquishing life arhats are born in a land with remainder beyond the realms and encounter another buddha, hear the scripture, and attain decisive understanding; Nanyue's four reliances are a separately listed old interpretation |
| Four reliances | Nanyue's first interpretation of other buddhas; it does not replace the root treatise's prior statement about buddhas in lands with remainder |
| Decisive understanding | Attaining clear and settled understanding of this Dharma; it is not generalized into completion of every realization |
A verbatim scan of this domain finds none of the seven later schematic terms: five periods and eight teachings; modes of transformation; dharmas of transformation; Tripiṭaka, Shared, Separate, and Perfect; the ten subtleties of the Trace Gate; the ten subtleties of the Origin Gate; and three thousand in one thought-moment. The apparatus records only this verbal boundary. It neither infers from zero occurrence that the doctrinal meanings are absent nor disguises later schematic terms as sentences of the root treatise.
VII. Similes · Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward
The most concentrated image in this chapter is turbid water. Four turbidities converge within a single time like rushing water made muddy, stirred by wind and waves and disturbed by fish and dragons. The turbidity of the eon is therefore not another independently existing thing but the temporal mark disclosed when the several turbidities gather. The turbidity of afflictions then displays its marks one by one through five similes: the sea of greed, the viper of anger, black lacquer, disdain, and the net of doubt. The turbidity of views uses netting and a dense forest for entanglement; the turbidity of living beings uses birdlime for appropriative adhesion; and the turbidity of life uses turning waves and curling smoke for ceaseless change from instant to instant. Each simile has its own referent and cannot be exchanged for another.
The old-physician and milk-medicine simile turns the problem of the five turbidities into a problem of teaching. The old physician does not know whether milk is beneficial or harmful, does not know the source of illness, and does not know when medicine should be permitted or prohibited. This corresponds to living beings who, on hearing permanence and self, would take what is false to be true. The Buddha therefore first teaches impermanence, suffering, and emptiness to treat deviant views, and only after the turbidities are removed teaches the Great through ultimate meaning. Cross-read with the milk-medicine scene in the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, milk can be both poisonous harm and ambrosia: the decisive matter is the illness and timing, not milk fixed as one kind of thing in itself.
Cross-read with this repository's Skillful Means chapter, this unit directly explains the prose from 「我今亦復如是」 tr. “I too am now like this”〔T09n0262 0007b18〕 through 「唯一佛乘」 tr. “only the one buddha vehicle”〔0007c09〕. The commentary's three first and one afterward, establishment of the provisional through the five turbidities, and distinction of the false to encourage the genuine all attach sentence by sentence to the same root-scripture passage. Cross-read with the Conjured City chapter, 「猶餘二百由旬」 tr. “two hundred yojanas still remain”〔T34n1718 0053c14〕 places the claims of final body and ultimate attainment back within the simile in which the treasure place has not yet been reached, while 「我於餘國作佛」 tr. “I will become a buddha in another land”〔T09n0262 0025c16〕 provides a later passage in the same scripture that illuminates decisive understanding through another buddha.
Cross-read with the Profound Meaning of the Lotus Sūtra, this chapter brings opening the provisional to reveal the real down into a sentence-by-sentence explanation of Śākyamuni's chapter. Cross-read with the Great Calming and Contemplation, it takes only the stable points of contact in the four siddhāntas and teaching through contemplation of capacities, without retroactively writing that work's sectional headings into this passage. The Profound Praise of the Lotus Sūtra likewise explains the Skillful Means chapter and can serve as a Cien-school mirror for cross-reading, but one commentary is not used to adjudicate another. When this chapter is carried forward into the later verse, the prose has already established the framework of five sections, five questions, and making exclusions and resolving doubts. The verse's restatement must return to this framework rather than inventing a different sequence for the Śākyamuni chapter.

2. Transmitted Inline Annotations
The strict domain contains four <note place="inline"> elements, all reading 云云:
| Loc | Exact Reader Form |
|---|---|
tr. “The turbidity of life points to continuous sustaining of form and mind as its essence. 〔The remainder is abbreviated.〕” |
tr. “The four gateways of the two teachings are distinguished in relation to the Great Vehicle; detailed examination will make them understandable. 〔The remainder is abbreviated.〕” |
tr. “This meaning can be known. 〔The remainder is abbreviated.〕” |
tr. “If this meaning is followed, it refers to arhats and not ordinary beings. 〔The remainder is abbreviated.〕” |
All four inline annotations remain within the sentences to which they belong. They are not moved outside quotation marks or stripped away to simulate a continuous body text.
3. Gaiji, Table of Contents, and Page Anchors
The strict domain contains exactly zero <g> tags; 虺, 嚚, 黐, and 憀 all appear as ordinary characters. This means only that the present domain contains no gaiji awaiting resolution; it does not imply that the whole fascicle has none.
The table of contents for the whole work has two title forms: the Introductory chapter does not prefix the character for “explanation,” while the other twenty-seven chapters do. This unit is a secondary division within the Skillful Means chapter and does not occupy a separate chapter. The reader source uses one page-break anchor and precise in-line anchors at paragraph openings; this domain currently marks page or paragraph transitions at〔T34 0052c02〕,〔T34 0053a19〕, and〔T34 0054a23〕. Verbatim citations in the apparatus are separately located by the nearest preceding Taishō line marker before the first character of the cited wording; reader page anchors cannot substitute for precise quotation anchors.
