Avataṃsaka Sūtra · The Ten Samādhis · Prologue and Request

〔T10 0211a05〕
心要Essence

The Buddha said: he is here, dwelling close beside me, and he has never once moved.

The assembly raised their heads to look for him, and could not find him. They looked a second time, and still could not find him. One of them entered ten thousand asaṃkhyeyas of samādhis to look for him, and could not see even the seat where he sat.

The Buddha did not call the man out. He asked one question only: the conjured forms within a conjuring of letters — can you say where they dwell?

Afterwards they saw him. Not because they searched with greater force, but because they were willing to raise the vow ‘one and the same practice and vow with Samantabhadra’ — and so exchanged their eyes from a single direction to all places.

The main text of the ten samādhis begins only with the sentence after this one. This whole passage is for nothing else than to bring forth the one who is to expound.

他們的名字是:金剛慧菩薩、無等慧菩薩、義語慧菩薩、最勝慧菩薩、常捨慧菩薩、那伽慧菩薩(那伽即龍・大力之義)、成就慧菩薩、調順慧菩薩、大力慧菩薩、難思慧菩薩、無礙慧菩薩、增上慧菩薩、普供慧菩薩、如理慧菩薩、善巧慧菩薩、法自在慧菩薩、法慧菩薩、寂靜慧菩薩、虛空慧菩薩、一相慧菩薩、善慧菩薩、如幻慧菩薩、廣大慧菩薩、勢力慧菩薩、世間慧菩薩、佛地慧菩薩、真實慧菩薩、尊勝慧菩薩、智光慧菩薩、無邊慧菩薩——以上三十位,名中皆帶一個「慧」字;

The Prologue (1): Time and Place — the World-Honored One Enters the Samādhi of All Buddhas at the Limit of the Kṣaṇa

At that time the World-Honored One was in the land of Magadha, at the place of awakening of the araṇya Dharma (araṇya means a still and secluded dwelling), having just then accomplished perfect awakening; and in the palace of Universal Light he entered the samādhi of all buddhas at the limit of the kṣaṇa (a kṣaṇa is the very shortest reach of time; to press it to its limit is to find that it has no limit) — manifesting the body of a Tathāgata by the spiritual power that is the mastery of omniscience: pure and unobstructed, with no place it depends upon, with nothing it takes as its object, abiding in the utmost quiescence of śamatha (that is, stillness), possessed of great awesome virtue and yet without the least defiling attachment, able to cause all who saw him to gain awakening, arising in the world according to what was fitting and never missing the season for it, ever abiding in a single mark — the mark, that is, of no mark.

The Prologue (2): The Virtues of the Bodhisattvas of the Assembly

Together with him there were bodhisattva-mahāsattvas as many as the dust motes of ten buddha-lands. There was not one among these bodhisattvas who had not entered the station of consecration; all of them were complete in the practice of a bodhisattva, and their measure was equal to the Dharma realm, measureless and boundless. They had obtained the samādhi of universal seeing of the bodhisattvas; with great compassion they set all sentient beings at rest; their spiritual penetrations had mastery, the same as those of a Tathāgata; their wisdom entered deeply, and they could expound the true meaning; they were complete in omniscience and subdued all the armies of Māra. Though they had entered the world, their minds were ever quiescent, and they abided in the bodhisattvas’ liberation of non-abiding.

The Prologue (3): The Roll of the Names of the Bodhisattva Assembly — One Hundred Bodhisattvas, with Universal Eye Among Them

Their names were: the bodhisattva Vajra Wisdom, the bodhisattva Peerless Wisdom, the bodhisattva Wisdom of Meaningful Speech, the bodhisattva Most Victorious Wisdom, the bodhisattva Ever-Relinquishing Wisdom, the bodhisattva Nāga Wisdom (nāga means dragon, and carries the sense of great strength), the bodhisattva Accomplished Wisdom, the bodhisattva Tamed and Compliant Wisdom, the bodhisattva Great Strength Wisdom, the bodhisattva Wisdom Hard to Conceive, the bodhisattva Unobstructed Wisdom, the bodhisattva Ascendant Wisdom, the bodhisattva Wisdom of Universal Offering, the bodhisattva Wisdom According with Principle, the bodhisattva Skillful Wisdom, the bodhisattva Wisdom of Mastery in Dharma, the bodhisattva Dharma Wisdom, the bodhisattva Quiescent Wisdom, the bodhisattva Empty-Space Wisdom, the bodhisattva One-Mark Wisdom, the bodhisattva Excellent Wisdom, the bodhisattva Wisdom Like an Illusion, the bodhisattva Vast Wisdom, the bodhisattva Wisdom of Force and Power, the bodhisattva Worldly Wisdom, the bodhisattva Wisdom of the Buddha-Ground, the bodhisattva True Wisdom, the bodhisattva Honored and Victorious Wisdom, the bodhisattva Wisdom of the Light of Knowledge, the bodhisattva Boundless Wisdom — the above thirty, whose names all carry the one word ‘wisdom’;

Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas such as these were as many as the dust motes of ten buddha-lands; and in ages past they had all together with the Tathāgata Vairocana cultivated the practices of the manifold wholesome roots of a bodhisattva.

The Request (1): Universal Eye Makes His Request — He Wishes to Ask Something

At that time the bodhisattva-mahāsattva Universal Eye, receiving the spiritual power of the Buddha, rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, set his right knee upon the ground, joined his palms, and addressed the Buddha, saying:

“World-Honored One! Of the Tathāgata, the Worthy of Offerings, the Perfectly Awakened One, I wish to ask something. May you take pity and permit it.”

The Request (2): The Tathāgata Permits the Question · Universal Eye Raises the Dharma and Asks Directly

The Buddha said: “Universal Eye! Ask what you will. I shall expound it for you and cause your mind to be glad.”

The bodhisattva Universal Eye said: “World-Honored One! The bodhisattva Samantabhadra, and the hosts of bodhisattvas who abide in all the practices and vows of Samantabhadra — how many samādhis and liberations have they accomplished, such that among the great samādhis of a bodhisattva they enter, or come forth, or at times abide therein? It is because he is able skillfully to enter and skillfully to come forth from the inconceivable and vast samādhis of a bodhisattva that he can, within all samādhis, transform himself with mastery and spiritual penetration without any rest.”

The Request (3): The Tathāgata Praises the Benefit of the Question · He Shows the Expounder and Bids Them Ask Samantabhadra

The Buddha said: “It is good, Universal Eye! It is for the benefit of the hosts of bodhisattvas past, future, and present that you ask after this meaning.

“Universal Eye! The bodhisattva Samantabhadra is here now. He has already been able to accomplish inconceivable spiritual penetrations of mastery, surpassing all bodhisattvas, and he is hard to meet with. He is born from measureless bodhisattva practice; the great vows of a bodhisattva are in him wholly purified; the practices he has cultivated are wholly beyond retrogression; the measureless gates of the perfections, the unobstructed gates of dhāraṇī, the inexhaustible gates of eloquence — all of these he has already obtained. He is pure and unobstructed; with great compassion he benefits all sentient beings; and by the power of his original vow he does not weary to the very end of time to come. You should ask him, and he will expound for you his own samādhi and mastery and liberation.”

Showing the Expounder (1): The Benefit Gained from Hearing the Name

At that time the hosts of bodhisattvas in the assembly, upon hearing the name of Samantabhadra, straightway obtained inconceivable and measureless samādhis: their minds were unobstructed, still and unmoving; their wisdom was vast and hard to fathom; their object was very deep, and none could equal it. There and then they saw countless buddhas, obtained the powers of a Tathāgata, became one with the nature of a Tathāgata, and shone with clear light upon past, future, and present without exception; all their merit was beyond exhausting, and every spiritual penetration was already complete in them.

Showing the Expounder (2): The First Seeking, and Not Seeing

These bodhisattvas gave rise in their minds to reverence for the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, and thirsted to see him; so they observed everywhere throughout the whole assembly, and in the end did not behold him — nor did they see even the seat upon which he sat. This was because it was sustained by the awesome power of the Tathāgata, and it was also the mastery of the spiritual penetration of Samantabhadra that made it so.

Showing the Expounder (3): Asking Again · Seeking Again and Not Seeing · The Tathāgata Explains the Reason

At that time the bodhisattva Universal Eye addressed the Buddha, saying: “World-Honored One! Where is the bodhisattva Samantabhadra now?”

The Buddha said: “Universal Eye! The bodhisattva Samantabhadra is now here in this assembly at the place of awakening, dwelling close beside me, and he has never stirred or moved.”

Then Universal Eye and the bodhisattvas observed the assembly at the place of awakening once again, seeking everywhere, and then addressed the Buddha, saying: “World-Honored One! We still are not now able to see the body of the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, nor his seat.”

The Buddha said: “It is so, good sons! Why is it that you do not see? Good sons! It is because the dwelling place of the bodhisattva Samantabhadra is very deep and beyond speaking. The bodhisattva Samantabhadra has obtained the boundless gates of wisdom, has entered the samādhi of the lion’s stretching, has obtained the unsurpassed functioning of mastery, has entered the limit of purity and non-obstruction; he brings forth the ten powers of a Tathāgata, takes the treasury of the Dharma realm as his body, is guarded in mind by all Tathāgatas alike, and can in a single thought wholly enter and realize the undifferentiated knowledge of the buddhas of the three times — and therefore you are not able to see him.”

Showing the Expounder (4): Seeking by the Power of Samādhi and Still Not Seeing · The Simile of the Conjured Form Within the Conjuring

At that time the bodhisattva Universal Eye, having heard the Tathāgata expound the pure merit of the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, straightway obtained ten thousand asaṃkhyeyas of samādhis; and by the power of those samādhis he observed everywhere once more, thirsting to see the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, and still was not able to see him. The rest of all the hosts of bodhisattvas likewise did not see him.

Then the bodhisattva Universal Eye rose from his samādhi and addressed the Buddha, saying: “World-Honored One! I have entered ten thousand asaṃkhyeyas of samādhis and sought to see Samantabhadra, and in the end have not gained it; his body and the deeds of his body, his speech and the deeds of his speech, his mind and the deeds of his mind, his seat and his dwelling place — none of these can be seen at all.”

The Buddha said: “So it is, so it is! Good sons! You should know that all of this is by the power of the bodhisattva Samantabhadra’s abiding in inconceivable liberation.

“Universal Eye! What do you think? Is there anyone who can say where the manifold conjured forms within a conjuring of letters dwell?”

Universal Eye answered, saying: “There is not.”

The Buddha said: “Universal Eye! If the conjured form within a conjuring cannot be spoken of, how much less the secret object of the body, the secret object of the speech, and the secret object of the mind of the bodhisattva Samantabhadra — how could one enter therein and see therein!

“Why is this so? The object of the bodhisattva Samantabhadra is very deep, inconceivable, without measure, and already past measure. To raise the essential of it: the bodhisattva Samantabhadra enters the Dharma realm universally by a vajra wisdom; within all worlds he does not travel and does not dwell; he knows that the bodies of all sentient beings are, just as they are, not bodies; there is neither going nor coming for him; he has obtained the spiritual penetration of mastery that has no cutting off and no differentiation; he has nothing he depends upon and nothing he contrives; there is no stirring or turning in him, and he reaches to the ultimate bound of the Dharma realm.

“Good sons! Suppose a person is able to see the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, or gains to serve him, or gains to hear his name, or has any thought of him, or has any recollection of him, or gives rise to faith and understanding, or diligently observes him, or has only begun to turn toward him, or is at this moment seeking for him, or raises up a vow — so long as it is unbroken and continuous, all of them will gain benefit, and there is not one that passes in vain.”

Showing the Expounder (5): Teaching How Seeing Arises — the Tathāgata Teaches Three Minds

At that time Universal Eye and all the hosts of bodhisattvas gave rise in their minds to a thirst for the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, wishing that they might look upon him and meet him, and thus they spoke: “Homage to all the buddhas! Homage to the bodhisattva Samantabhadra!” Thus they called out three times, and bowed their heads to the ground in reverence.

At that time the Buddha told the bodhisattva Universal Eye and the whole assembly, saying: “Sons of the Buddha! You should pay reverence to Samantabhadra once again and make your request with earnestness; and again you should with single-minded sincerity observe the ten directions, and contemplate the body of Samantabhadra as appearing before you. Think in this way, throughout the whole Dharma realm; with a deep mind have faith and understanding; turn away from all things in weariness; vow to be of one and the same practice and vow with Samantabhadra: to enter the true Dharma that is not two, to have your body appear universally within all worlds, to know entirely the differences among the faculties of sentient beings, and to gather together the path of Samantabhadra in every place. If you are able to raise up such great vows as these, then you shall gain the sight of the bodhisattva Samantabhadra.”

Then Universal Eye, having heard these words of the Buddha, together with the bodhisattvas bowed his head to the ground and made request that they might gain the sight of the great being Samantabhadra.

Showing the Expounder (6): Samantabhadra Manifests His Body

At that time the bodhisattva Samantabhadra straightway, by the spiritual power of liberation, manifested a form-body for them according to what each was fit to see, causing all those hosts of bodhisattvas to see Samantabhadra drawing near to the Tathāgata and sitting upon a lotus seat within this whole host of bodhisattvas; and they saw him too in all the other worlds, at the place of every buddha, coming from thence one after another in succession; and they saw him too at the place of all those buddhas expounding all the practices of the bodhisattvas, opening up and showing the path of the knowledge of omniscience, setting forth clearly all the spiritual penetrations of the bodhisattvas, distinguishing all the awesome virtue of the bodhisattvas, and manifesting all the buddhas of the three times.

Then the bodhisattva Universal Eye and all the hosts of bodhisattvas, seeing this transformation, leapt up in their minds and gave rise to great gladness, and there was not one of them who did not bow his head to the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, giving rise in his mind to reverence, just as though he were seeing all the buddhas of the ten directions.

Showing the Expounder (7): The Auspicious Signs Appear and the Benefit Is Accomplished

Then, by the great awesome spiritual power of the Buddha, and by the power of the faith and understanding of the bodhisattvas and the power of the original vow of the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, there rained down of itself ten thousand kinds of cloud. Namely: manifold flower clouds, manifold garland clouds, manifold incense clouds, manifold powdered-incense clouds (powdered incense is incense ground into powder), manifold canopy clouds, manifold robe clouds, manifold clouds of adorning gear, manifold clouds of rare jewels, manifold clouds of burning incense, and manifold clouds of silks.

Worlds beyond speaking quaked in six ways; the music of the heavens sounded, and its sound was heard afar into worlds beyond speaking; a great light was sent forth, and its radiance shone universally upon worlds beyond speaking, causing the suffering of the three evil destinies to be wholly removed, purifying and adorning worlds beyond speaking, causing bodhisattvas beyond speaking to enter the practice of Samantabhadra, causing bodhisattvas beyond speaking to accomplish the practice of Samantabhadra, causing bodhisattvas beyond speaking to bring the practices and vows of Samantabhadra to complete fullness and to accomplish unsurpassed perfect awakening.

Showing the Expounder (8): Universal Eye Praises His Virtue · The Tathāgata Confirms and Restates It

At that time the bodhisattva Universal Eye addressed the Buddha, saying: “World-Honored One! The bodhisattva Samantabhadra is one who abides in great awesome virtue, one who abides in the peerless, one who abides in that beyond which none passes, one who abides in non-retrogression, one who abides in evenness, one who abides in the indestructible, one who abides in all differentiated dharmas, one who abides in all undifferentiated dharmas, one who abides in the dwelling place of the skillful minds of all sentient beings, one who abides in the samādhi of mastery and liberation in all dharmas.”

The Buddha said: “So it is, so it is! Universal Eye! It is just as you have said. The bodhisattva Samantabhadra has asaṃkhyeyas of pure merit, namely: the merit of peerless adornment, the merit of measureless jewels, the merit of the inconceivable sea, the merit of measureless marks, the merit of boundless clouds, the merit that is boundless and beyond all praising, the merit of the inexhaustible Dharma, the merit beyond speaking, the merit of all buddhas, and the merit that extolling and praising cannot exhaust.”

The Main Portion (1): The Tathāgata Entrusts Samantabhadra · Raising the Benefit and Bidding Him Expound

At that time the Tathāgata told the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, saying:

“Samantabhadra! You should, for Universal Eye and for the hosts of bodhisattvas in this assembly, expound the ten samādhis, causing them to gain skillful entry and to fulfill all the practices and vows of Samantabhadra. For it is because the bodhisattva-mahāsattvas proclaim these ten great samādhis that bodhisattvas of the past have already gained deliverance, that bodhisattvas of the present now gain deliverance, and that bodhisattvas of the future shall gain deliverance.

The Main Portion (2): The Listing of the Names of the Ten Great Samādhis

“Which ten? The first is the great samādhi of universal light; the second is the great samādhi of wondrous light; the third is the great samādhi of going in succession to the buddha-lands everywhere; the fourth is the great samādhi of the practice of the pure and deep mind; the fifth is the great samādhi of the treasury of the adornments of the past that are known; the sixth is the great samādhi of the treasury of the light of knowledge; the seventh is the great samādhi of knowing the buddha-adornments of all worlds; the eighth is the great samādhi of the differentiated bodies of sentient beings; the ninth is the great samādhi of mastery in the Dharma realm; the tenth is the great samādhi of the unobstructed wheel.

The Main Portion (3): Praising the Surpassing Virtue of These Concentrations — with Respect to the Person · to the Cultivation · to the Dharma

“These ten great samādhis are such that only the great bodhisattvas are able to enter them skillfully; and all the buddhas of past, future, and present have expounded them, shall expound them, and are expounding them.

“If bodhisattvas love and revere them and cultivate them without slackening, then they will be able to accomplish them. Such a person as this is then named a buddha, is named a Tathāgata, and is also named one who has obtained the ten powers, is also named a guide, is also named a great guide, is also named omniscience, is also named all-seeing, is also named one who abides unobstructed, is also named one who has reached through to every object, is also named one who has mastery in all dharmas.

“This bodhisattva enters universally into all worlds, and yet is attached to no world; he enters universally into all realms of sentient beings, and yet grasps at no sentient being; he enters universally into all bodies, and yet is hindered by no body; he enters universally into the whole Dharma realm, and yet knows that the Dharma realm has no bound. He draws near to all the buddhas of the three times, sees clearly the dharmas of all the buddhas, expounds skillfully all letters, reaches through to all provisional names, accomplishes the pure path of all bodhisattvas, and abides in the differentiated practice of all bodhisattvas. Within a single thought he universally obtains the knowledge of all three times, universally knows the dharmas of all three times, universally proclaims the teachings of all the buddhas, and universally turns all the wheels of non-retrogression; and in each and every one of the past, future, and present he universally realizes all the paths of awakening; and within each and every one of these awakenings he universally knows all that the buddhas have expounded.

“This is the gate of the marks of the dharmas of the bodhisattvas; it is the gate of the awakened knowing of the bodhisattvas; it is the gate of the unvanquished banner of the knowledge of all modes; it is the gate of all the practices and vows of the bodhisattva Samantabhadra; it is the gate of the fierce and swift spiritual penetrations and vows; it is the gate of all the all-holding and eloquence; it is the gate of the differences among all the dharmas of the three times; it is the gate of the manifesting of all the buddhas; it is the gate that establishes all sentient beings by Sarvajñā (that is, omniscience); it is the gate that purifies and adorns all worlds by the spiritual power of a buddha.

The Main Portion (4): Praising with Respect to Realization · Concluding Exhortation to Expound

“If a bodhisattva enters this samādhi, he obtains the power of the Dharma realm, and it has no exhausting; he obtains the course of empty space, and it has no obstruction; he obtains the station of a Dharma king with measureless mastery, just as in the world one is consecrated and invested with office. He obtains boundless knowledge and reaches through to all things; he obtains vast power, complete in ten ways; he accomplishes the mind without contention and enters the limit of quiescence; he is greatly compassionate and without fear, like a lion; he becomes a hero of wisdom and kindles the bright lamp of the true Dharma; the praising of all his merit cannot be exhausted, and the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas are not able to conceive of it.

“He obtains the knowledge of the Dharma realm and abides in the limit that does not move, and yet he can expound in manifold ways in accord with the customs of the world; he abides in the markless, and yet skillfully enters the marks of dharmas; he obtains the treasury of the purity of self-nature and is born within the pure house of a Tathāgata; he opens up skillfully the manifold differentiated gates of Dharma, and yet by wisdom knows that there is nothing there at all; he knows the season well, and constantly gives the gift of Dharma to awaken all beings, and is named a knowing one; he gathers in sentient beings universally and causes them all to become pure; by the knowledge of skillful means he manifests the accomplishing of the path of a buddha, and yet ever cultivates the practice of a bodhisattva without cutting it off; he enters the object of the skillful means of omniscience and manifests manifold vast spiritual penetrations.

“Therefore, Samantabhadra! You should now distinguish and expound at length the ten great samādhis of all bodhisattvas, for the assembly of this gathering all wish to hear them.”

The Portion of the Exposition (Beginning): Samantabhadra Receives the Charge

At that time the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, receiving the intent of the Tathāgata, observed Universal Eye and the hosts of bodhisattvas, and told them, saying —

義疏Exposition

A Dharma Gathering — Why It Spends So Long First upon the Asking

What the chapter of the ten samādhis is to expound is ten kinds of great samādhi; and yet its opening runs on and on without so much as touching the content of a single one of them: the World-Honored One enters concentration, the bodhisattvas are set out by name, Universal Eye raises his question, three times he seeks to see Samantabhadra and three times does not see him, the Tathāgata sets up a simile, he teaches the assembly how to contemplate, Samantabhadra manifests his body, the heavens rain down ten thousand kinds of cloud — and only at the very end does the Tathāgata with his own mouth entrust Samantabhadra with the expounding. To one impatient to read the ten samādhis, most of this looks like preamble.

In truth this passage is establishing three things: who is fit to ask, who is fit to expound, and on what ground this Dharma can be uttered at all. Chengguan first distinguishes the coming of the assembly. The coming of the assembly has two senses — spoken of in terms of complete interfusion, what the earlier assemblies made clear, passing through the human and heavenly stations, was the differentiated proper positions contained within the universal gate; what this assembly is to make clear is that the virtue and function that come after the stations still do not depart from the universal gate, and so the differentiated assembly enters the universal, and the return to the palace of Universal Light is for this. Spoken of in terms of sequence, the ten grounds have been expounded before, and here the two awakenings, equal and wondrous, are to be displayed. The reason for the coming of the chapter is more direct still: this chapter is in order to answer the question about the ten samādhis raised in the second assembly.

The question standing before and the answer falling here — and the one who answers is not the Buddha but Samantabhadra: this is why the opening cannot but be long. The expounder has first to be brought forth.

The First Sentence of the Opening — Why It Is “Entering the Samādhi of All Buddhas at the Limit of the Kṣaṇa”

The sūtra opens by setting out time, place, and host: the World-Honored One, in the land of Magadha at the place of awakening of the araṇya Dharma, has just then accomplished perfect awakening, and in the palace of Universal Light he enters the samādhi of all buddhas at the limit of the kṣaṇa. A reader easily takes this for a set formula and passes over it at a glance.

But why this concentration in particular, the limit of the kṣaṇa? Chengguan explains this samādhi as being the exhausting of the true source of dharmas: what is utmost brief in time is named a kṣaṇa, and when one presses that kṣaṇa to the end, the mark of its time is from the first wholly still — there is no real ‘single kṣaṇa’ standing there; and a limit that has no limit is what is called the limit of the kṣaṇa. He says further that the special marking here of ‘entering the limit of the kṣaṇa’ is in order to display that what is about to be expounded is the station of equal awakening: when the bodhisattva grounds are at their end there is still the impermanence of the encumbrance of fruition, the mark of arising is not yet stilled, and it is still called the store-consciousness; but if by uninterrupted knowledge one awakens to the first arising of mind, and mind has no first mark, being far removed from subtle thought, then there is no kṣaṇa at all. Enter this limit, and one sees that the nature of mind constantly abides — this is named ultimate awakening; and therefore the sūtra says that it is the samādhi of all buddhas.

One misreading must be guarded against here: do not read ‘the limit of the kṣaṇa’ as ‘extremely fast’. It is not speed. It is the pursuing of time to the bottom and the finding that it has no bottom. That the World-Honored One enters this concentration before expounding the ten samādhis is a showing of the root of every concentration: concentration is not the shutting of the mind inside a stretch of time, but the ceasing of time itself to stand. Brought down to the reader, this sentence governs the point of entry — if one is still counting how long one has sat, one has not yet touched the concentration this chapter speaks of.

A Hundred Names, of Which the First Thirty All Carry the One Word ‘Wisdom’

The prologue sets out the names of a hundred bodhisattvas, at very great length. Is such a roll worth reading?

It is, because the manner of the setting out is itself an exposition. The sūtra first lists thirty bodhisattvas whose names carry the word ‘wisdom’ — Vajra Wisdom, Peerless Wisdom, Wisdom of Meaningful Speech, Most Victorious Wisdom, and so on all the way to Boundless Wisdom; and only thereafter do seventy set up names of their own — Mindfulness Adornment, Reaching the Limit of Emptiness, Nature Adornment, Very Deep Object, and so on, down to the last few: Vajra Penetration, Vajra Knowledge, Vajra Flame, Vajra Wisdom, Universal Eye, Sun of the Buddha, Upholding the Secret Meaning of the Buddha’s Vajra, Adornment of the Knowledge of the Object of the Universal Eye. Chengguan glosses this, saying: that the first thirty share the name of wisdom is to display unmixed virtue; that the seventy from Mindfulness Adornment onward have names of their own is to display mixed virtue.

The misreading to be set aside is this: it is not display for its own sake. At a gathering that is to expound concentration, what comes out first is a whole rank of ‘wisdom’ — concentration is not a thing that stands apart from wisdom. And what matters more: the one who requests the Dharma, Universal Eye, has his name hidden in the tail of those seventy separate names. Chengguan points to it exactly: Universal Eye makes the request because only with a universal eye can one see the universal Dharma. The eye being named universal, what it sees can be universal — the very name of the one who requests the Dharma is itself the condition of admission to this chapter.

What It Is That Universal Eye Asks

If one glances at Universal Eye’s question only once, it looks as though he is asking after a number: the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, and the bodhisattvas who abide in the practices and vows of Samantabhadra — how many samādhis and liberations have they accomplished?

But the latter half of the question is the bone of it: what he asks is that these bodhisattvas, among the great samādhis of a bodhisattva, enter, or come forth, or at times abide therein — and he states his own reason: it is just because they can skillfully enter and skillfully come forth from the inconceivable and vast samādhis that they can transform themselves with mastery and spiritual penetration within all samādhis without rest. So what he asks is not how many kinds of concentration there are, but how the thing called ‘mastery in entering and coming forth’ is possible at all. Chengguan judges the portion of the request into four: Universal Eye makes his request, the Tathāgata permits the question, he raises the Dharma and asks directly, and the benefit of the question is praised; and the Tathāgata’s answer fastens exactly upon that benefit — it is for the benefit of the hosts of bodhisattvas past, future, and present that you ask after this meaning.

A misreading to be set aside: do not read this question as curiosity. A question about the Dharma stands only because the questioner can already see the universal Dharma, and because what is asked bears upon the deliverance of the bodhisattvas of the three times. Brought down to the ground: whether a question is rightly asked depends upon where the asker is standing — and this is also why, further on, the Tathāgata does not answer it himself but sends him to ask Samantabhadra.

The Name Is Spoken, and Yet the Man Cannot Be Found — Three Seekings Without Seeing

After permitting the question the Tathāgata does something unlooked for: he does not expound the ten samādhis, but only says that the bodhisattva Samantabhadra is here now, and bids Universal Eye go and ask him himself. The moment the assembly hears the name of Samantabhadra they obtain measureless samādhis, their minds are unobstructed, they see countless buddhas — and yet, turning to observe everywhere throughout the gathering, they can by no means see Samantabhadra, nor even the seat where he sits.

Chengguan outlines this as three seekings, in all of which they do not see: the first is the seeking of thirst and not seeing, the second is the seeking of renewed observation and not seeing, the third is the seeking by the power of samādhi and not seeing. The reason for not seeing the first time the sūtra states itself: it is sustained by the awesome power of the Tathāgata, and it is also the mastery of Samantabhadra’s spiritual penetration that makes it so; and Chengguan explains the intent of it — it is to make the great assembly thirst, so that the deep purport may be displayed. The second time Universal Eye asks straight out where Samantabhadra is now, and the Buddha answers that he is right here in this assembly at the place of awakening, dwelling close beside him, never once having moved; the assembly seeks again, and still does not see. The third time Universal Eye enters ten thousand asaṃkhyeyas of samādhis and observes everywhere by the power of concentration, and still does not see.

The misreading to be set aside is this: Samantabhadra is not hiding. The Buddha has already said plainly that he has not moved — not moving and yet not able to be seen is precisely what this passage is teaching. The reason for not seeing does not lie in the object’s having hidden itself, but in the power that sees not being of a measure with the object seen. Brought down to the ground: the commonest frustration in practice is ‘but I have truly searched so hard’, and this passage’s answer is that if the manner of searching is still a hunting outward after an object, the greater the force the less it will be seen.

The Reason the Buddha Gives: The Dwelling Place Is Very Deep

When Universal Eye seeks a second time and does not see, the Buddha gives a direct explanation: the dwelling place of the bodhisattva Samantabhadra is very deep and beyond speaking. He has obtained the boundless gates of wisdom, entered the samādhi of the lion’s stretching, obtained the unsurpassed functioning of mastery, entered the limit of purity and non-obstruction, brought forth the ten powers of a Tathāgata, taken the treasury of the Dharma realm as his body, is guarded in mind by all Tathāgatas alike, and can within a single thought enter and realize the undifferentiated knowledge of the buddhas of the three times — and therefore you do not see him.

Chengguan judges this passage very finely: the text has ten phrases, the first being the general, the eight in the middle the particular, and the last the conclusion; and the eight particular phrases make four pairs. One pair is the depth of the vast knowledge and the surpassing concentration — the gate of knowledge being boundless, how should a bounded knowledge behold the working of this concentration? The rising and sinking of the concentration is without fear, its opening out and drawing in has mastery, and it may be sought only with a supramundane concentration, and so it cannot be seen. The next two phrases are the depth of the outward function and the inward realization; the next two, the depth of the obtaining of power and the completing of the body; and the last two, the depth of the many guardings and the swift realization. By these eight depths, therefore, he cannot be seen.

A misreading to be set aside: ‘very deep’ is not an adjectival compliment but a statement of fact — Samantabhadra takes the treasury of the Dharma realm as his body, and the body being the Dharma realm, there is no position inside the Dharma realm that could be pointed out. This answers the earlier doubt as well: it is not that he is not present; it is that the very form of the question ‘where is he’ is wrong.

The Conjured Form Within the Conjuring: Even the Unspeakable Is Given a Measure

After the third failure to see, the Buddha does not go on directly with the deep meaning; he puts a question to Universal Eye: is there anyone who can say where the manifold conjured forms within a conjuring of letters dwell? Universal Eye answers: there is not.

This one question and answer is the pivot of the whole passage. The Buddha then says: if the conjured form within a conjuring cannot be spoken of, how much less the secret object of the body, of the speech, and of the mind of Samantabhadra, and the wish to enter therein and see therein. So ‘not able to be seen’ is not a matter of degree but of kind — a conjured form has no dwelling at all, and to ask where it dwells is a question that does not stand as a question. The Buddha then raises the essential of it: Samantabhadra by a vajra wisdom enters the Dharma realm universally; within all worlds he neither travels nor dwells; he knows that the bodies of all sentient beings are, just as they are, not bodies; there is neither going nor coming, nothing depended upon and nothing contrived, no stirring and no turning, and he reaches to the ultimate bound of the Dharma realm.

The misreading to be set aside is this: it is not being said that Samantabhadra is a conjuring. The simile takes only the one part, ‘having no dwelling place’. Where it comes to ground is the last passage — the Buddha says that if a person sees Samantabhadra, or serves him, or hears his name, or thinks of him, or recollects him, or gives rise to faith and understanding, or observes him diligently, or has only begun to turn toward him, or is at this moment seeking him, or raises up a vow, so long as it is unbroken and continuous, all of them gain benefit and not one passes in vain. Not to be able to see is not the same as not to be able to seek; the merit of the seeking is not wasted, only what is gained does not lie in ‘catching sight of a person’.

Teaching How Seeing Arises: Only Three Kinds of Mind Can See

Then how is he to be seen at all? The Buddha gives a definite teaching, and its sequence is clear. He bids the great assembly pay reverence to Samantabhadra once again and make request with earnestness — this is the first step; then he bids them with single-minded sincerity observe the ten directions and contemplate the body of Samantabhadra as appearing before them, thinking in this way throughout the whole Dharma realm, with a deep mind having faith and understanding, turning away from all things in weariness — this is the second step; and last he bids them vow to be of one and the same practice and vow with Samantabhadra — to enter the true Dharma that is not two, to have their body appear universally within all worlds, to know entirely the differences among the faculties of sentient beings, and to gather together the path of Samantabhadra in every place — this is the third step. The sūtra says plainly: if they are able to raise up such great vows, then they shall gain the sight of him.

Chengguan explains these three steps thus: the first is to make the preceding mind strive with diligence; next, under ‘and again you should’, he sets forth the deep contemplation separately — before this they had abandoned the object and sought elsewhere, and so did not know its substance; now they are made to observe the ten directions together, and so know that its substance is everywhere; and it is in dependence upon this contemplation that they gain the sight. Last, under ‘vow to be of one and the same practice’, the vow is raised and the aspiration to equal him. These three minds being complete, they are able to gain the sight. He also asks on the reader’s behalf a question that matters: Universal Eye’s station is already deep — why must he cultivate contemplation over again? The answer has two senses: first, because his station is not yet equal to Samantabhadra’s; second, to display the depth of the Dharma and to encourage those who come after.

A misreading to be set aside: ‘contemplating him as appearing before you’ here is not the making of an image. The weight of the second step falls on ‘throughout the whole Dharma realm’ — the changing of the direction of the seeking from ‘some one place’ to ‘all places’. Brought down to the ground: what the one who cannot see must change is not his force but his bearing; and the third step is fiercer still — the condition of truly seeing Samantabhadra is that one’s vow be the same as his, not that one’s eye meet his.

The Manifesting of the Body and of the Signs: Not Seeing Displays the Depth, Manifesting Does Not Hinder the Function

The three minds being complete, Samantabhadra straightway, by the spiritual power of liberation, manifests a form-body according to what each is fit to see: they see him drawing near to the Tathāgata and sitting upon a lotus seat within the host of bodhisattvas; they see him too in all other worlds at the place of every buddha, coming from thence one after another in succession; and they see him at those buddhas’ places expounding the practices of a bodhisattva, opening up the path of the knowledge of omniscience, setting forth clearly the spiritual penetrations of the bodhisattvas, distinguishing the awesome virtue of the bodhisattvas, and manifesting the buddhas of the three times. Chengguan sets down here one utterly spare remark: not seeing displays the depth, and manifesting does not hinder the function.

Then come the confirming signs. From the three powers joined — the great awesome spiritual power of the Buddha, the power of the faith and understanding of the bodhisattvas, and the power of Samantabhadra’s original vow — there rains down of itself ten thousand kinds of cloud: flowers, garlands, incense, powdered incense, canopies, robes, adorning gear, rare jewels, burning incense, silks; worlds beyond speaking quake in six ways, the music of the heavens is heard afar, a great light shines universally, the suffering of the three evil destinies is removed, worlds beyond speaking are purified and adorned, and bodhisattvas beyond speaking enter the practice of Samantabhadra, accomplish the practice of Samantabhadra, and bring his practices and vows to complete fullness, accomplishing unsurpassed perfect awakening.

The misreading to be set aside is this: this passage is commonly read as ‘auspicious portents’. But its cause is the three powers, and one of those three in particular is the power of the faith and understanding of the bodhisattvas — the signs are not a reward arriving from outside; the faith and understanding of those who seek the Dharma have become one part of their cause. Brought down to the ground: half the adornment of a Dharma gathering is given by those who listen to the Dharma.

The Entrusting: The One Who Expounds Is Appointed

After the signs appear, Universal Eye enumerates before the Buddha the abidings of Samantabhadra — abiding in great awesome virtue, in the peerless, in that beyond which none passes, in non-retrogression, in evenness, in the indestructible, in all differentiated dharmas, in all undifferentiated dharmas, in the dwelling place of the skillful minds of all sentient beings, in the samādhi of mastery and liberation in all dharmas; the Buddha confirms what he says and adds to it the ten kinds of pure merit of Samantabhadra. Only at this point are the qualifications of the expounder established.

Then the Tathāgata with his own mouth tells Samantabhadra: you should for Universal Eye and the hosts of bodhisattvas of this assembly expound the ten samādhis, causing them to enter skillfully and to fulfill all the practices and vows of Samantabhadra; and he states the benefit — because the bodhisattvas proclaim these ten great samādhis, bodhisattvas of the past have already gained deliverance, bodhisattvas of the present now gain it, and bodhisattvas of the future shall gain it. Then the ten names are listed: universal light, wondrous light, going in succession to the buddha-lands everywhere, the practice of the pure and deep mind, the treasury of the adornments of the past that are known, the treasury of the light of knowledge, knowing the buddha-adornments of all worlds, the differentiated bodies of sentient beings, mastery in the Dharma realm, the unobstructed wheel. Chengguan explains why all ten names are called ‘great’: because a concentration of fullness of cause is commensurate with the Dharma realm. And he explains the names one by one — of the first he says that the deeds and functions of body and mind being everywhere and wholly contained is ‘universal’, and that the illumination of knowledge having mastery is named ‘light’; of the second, that body and knowledge illuminating everywhere is ‘light’, and that surpassing functions reflecting one within another is ‘wondrous’.

A misreading to be set aside: these ten names are not ten techniques. Chengguan, explaining the ninth concentration, says that it is entering and coming forth with mastery in the eighteen elements, the eye and the rest, and further the knowing of the bound of the phenomenal Dharma realm together with unobstructed mastery in the principial Dharma realm — what the names point to is the opening and closing of a domain, not a list of methods.

The Four Rounds of Praise and the Ten Gates: How the Surpassing Virtue of Concentration Is Praised

After the listing of the names, the sūtra praises the virtue of these ten concentrations at very great length; read straight through it sounds like a string of encomia, but in fact its layers are distinct. Chengguan judges it into four rounds: first, praise with respect to the person, the person being surpassing therefore the Dharma is surpassing; second, praise with respect to cultivation, first making clear the accomplishing of the cultivation and then the benefit of it; third, praise of the Dharma directly; fourth, praise with respect to realization.

The passage of direct praise of the Dharma is the ten sentences with the word ‘gate’: the gate of the marks of dharmas, the gate of awakened knowing, the gate of the unvanquished banner of the knowledge of all modes, the gate of the practices and vows of Samantabhadra, the gate of the fierce and swift spiritual penetrations and vows, the gate of all the all-holding and eloquence, the gate of the differences among the dharmas of the three times, the gate of the manifesting of all the buddhas, the gate that establishes all sentient beings by Sarvajñā, and the gate that purifies and adorns all worlds by the spiritual power of a buddha. Chengguan judges these ten gates into five pairs — the penetrating awakening of object and knowledge, the entering and roaming of cause and fruit, the general distinguishing of coming forth and abiding, that from which the dharmas of a buddha proceed, and the adorning of lands and the gathering in of beings — and says that there is nothing that is not established by these. And upon the four sentences of universal entering — entering universally into all worlds without attachment, into all realms of sentient beings without grasping, into all bodies without hindrance, into the whole Dharma realm and knowing it has no bound — he points out one thing as the eye of it: the reason all of them say ‘universally enters’ is that each and every one of them exhausts the domain of the jeweled net of Śakra.

The misreading to be set aside is this: these words of praise are not a heaping up of rhetoric; they are an outline. Brought down to the ground, in reading a long passage of praise one may ask a single question: is this sentence praising the person, the cultivation, the Dharma, or the realization? Once that is sorted, the long passage is no longer an undifferentiated stretch of grandeur.

Receiving the Charge: The Opening Ends at Last in a Turning

At the close of the main portion the Tathāgata gathers it into one concluding exhortation: therefore, Samantabhadra, you should now distinguish and expound at length the ten great samādhis of all bodhisattvas, for the assembly of this gathering all wish to hear them. And immediately the sūtra writes but one sentence — the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, receiving the intent of the Tathāgata, observed Universal Eye and the hosts of bodhisattvas and told them, saying — and with that the prologue and request come to an end, the next sentence entering upon the first concentration.

This sentence is short enough to look like a scene-change, but it is in fact the gathering up of the whole passage. Chengguan judges the portion of the exposition into three: first the general telling upon receiving the charge, next the separate explanation of the ten concentrations, and last the general conclusion of the ten numbers; and this sentence is the head of that ‘general telling upon receiving the charge’. From the World-Honored One’s first entering the samādhi at the limit of the kṣaṇa to Samantabhadra’s here opening his mouth upon receiving the charge, there lie between them three failures to see, one simile, three minds, one manifesting of the body, and one showing of signs — and all of these are for nothing else than to hand the authority to expound from the Buddha’s hand into Samantabhadra’s, and to hand it over before the whole assembly and by name.

Brought down to the ground: this passage teaches one very plain thing — the Dharma does not come of itself. There must be one who asks rightly, one who requests sincerely, and one who is appointed to expound, and only then will the Dharma be uttered. The main text of the ten samādhis begins with the next sentence; and that it can begin at all rests wholly upon this passage.

Lineage

The explanation of this passage takes Chengguan’s Huayan jing shu as its axis: the reason for its coming, the explanation of the name, the purport, the outline into five portions, and further the ten phrases of the prologue matched to the twenty-one kinds of merit, the four divisions of the portion of the request, the six divisions of the portion of showing the expounder, the four divisions of the main portion, the four pairs and eight depths of the depth of the dwelling place, and the five pairs of the ten gates — all of these come from his hand, and it is to these that each section of this piece is fastened. Fazang’s Tanxuan ji lacks an explanation of this chapter: the sixty-fascicle Avataṃsaka has no chapter of the ten samādhis, and his commentary follows the order of the sixty-fascicle text, and so there is no separate section of explanation; and the collation with the parallel translation likewise fails entirely for this reason. This is a limit of the witnesses, not a choice made by the ancient worthies. Zhiyan’s Souxuan ji has no separate explanation of this chapter, and only in one remark within an outline elsewhere fastens this question of the ten samādhis upon the chapter of the ten forbearances as its answer, which stands together with Chengguan’s judgment that the chapter is in order to answer the question about the ten samādhis raised in the second assembly; the two are recorded without adjudication. Li Tongxuan’s Xin Huayan jing lun does not explain this chapter section by section, but sets it out within his general discussion as the pervading of the substance of concentration, and, on the strength of the sameness of the opening sentences of this chapter and of the Chapter on Detachment from the World, fastens the two chapters upon the first assembly that precedes — this is one track of symbolic reading, going its own way beside Chengguan’s track of the outline of assemblies and stations, and it too is recorded without adjudication. As for the compendia that set out the doctrinal classification of the Huayan house, they have no bearing upon the prologue of this chapter, and the absence is recorded in accordance with fact.

考據Apparatus

澄觀《華嚴經疏》T35n1735(八十華嚴逐文·主)

李通玄《新華嚴經論》T36n1739(表法異軌)

The chapter of the ten samādhis opens the seventh assembly, the return to the palace of Universal Light. The prologue begins from the World-Honored One’s 「入剎那際諸佛三昧」 tr. “entering the samādhi of all buddhas at the limit of the kṣaṇa” ; Universal Eye makes his request once and seeks Samantabhadra three times without gaining the sight of him; the Tathāgata takes the conjured form within a conjuring as a simile to make clear that his object is very deep; and at the end he tells Samantabhadra himself, entrusting him to expound the ten great samādhis at length for the assembly — the one who requests, the one who expounds, and the Dharma to be expounded being here established one by one. Chengguan judges this chapter to be 「為答第二會中十定問故」 tr. “in order to answer the question about the ten samādhis raised in the second assembly” , and fixes its position by saying that it has 「等覺之義而無等覺之名」 tr. “the sense of equal awakening but not the name of equal awakening” . The sixty-fascicle Avataṃsaka has no such chapter, and therefore the whole heading of collation with the parallel translations for this unit stands as 〔the sixty-fascicle text lacks it〕, and Fazang’s Tanxuan ji likewise as 〔not found〕; the explanations of the ancient worthies are here principally the single line of Chengguan’s Shu, with Li Tongxuan’s Lun consulted alongside.

I. Doctrinal Outline and Placement

Witness / commentatorThe place of this passage within it
The base text T279Chapter twenty-seven, The Ten Samādhis (the seventh assembly, the return to the palace of Universal Light · beginning with fascicle forty 〔T10n0279 0211a05〕); the prologue and request = from 〔0211a06〕 up to 〔0213a21〕, the boundary sentence being 「爾時,普賢菩薩承如來旨,觀普眼等諸菩薩眾而告之言」 tr. “At that time the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, receiving the intent of the Tathāgata, observed Universal Eye and the hosts of bodhisattvas, and told them, saying”
Buddhabhadra T278 (the sixty-fascicle Avataṃsaka)〔the sixty-fascicle text lacks it〕 — chapter twenty-two, The Ten Grounds 〔T09n0278 0542a05〕 is followed directly by chapter twenty-three, The Ten Clarities 〔0578a10〕, and there is no chapter corresponding to The Ten Samādhis
Chengguan, Huayan jing shu T35n1735The commentary on the chapter of the ten samādhis begins 〔0840b07〕 (ending before the commentary on the chapter of the ten spiritual penetrations begins 〔0850a05〕); it opens four gates — the reason for its coming 〔0840b08〕 · the explanation of the name 〔0840b18〕 · the purport 〔0840b29〕 · the direct explanation of the text 〔0840c03〕; and this chapter is divided into five portions 〔0841a06〕
Fazang, Tanxuan ji T35n1733〔not found〕 — the Tanxuan ji follows the order of the chapters of the sixty-fascicle Avataṃsaka and ends with the chapter on entering the Dharma realm; the sixty-fascicle text having no chapter of the ten samādhis, there is no separate section explaining this chapter
Zhiyan, Souxuan ji T35n1732No separate section explaining this chapter; only three scattered back-references — 「次十定等十四句」 tr. “next the fourteen phrases of the ten samādhis and the rest” 〔0026a01〕 · 「〈十忍品〉答此十定」 tr. “the chapter of the ten forbearances answers these ten samādhis” 〔0026a05〕 · 「十定可知」 tr. “the ten samādhis may be known” 〔0077b07〕, none of which is text explaining the prologue of this chapter; recorded for reference
Li Tongxuan, Xin Huayan jing lun T36n1739No section-by-section outline and explanation (the manner of his treatise lies in threading the doctrine through); he places the ten samādhis at the level of his general discussion, under 「因果位終」 tr. “the end of the stations of cause and fruit” 〔0765a10〕 and 「定體遍周」 tr. “the substance of concentration pervades everywhere” 〔0767a02〕

The reason for its coming — Chengguan first distinguishes the coming of the assembly, and after that the coming of the chapter:

tr. “First, making clear the reason for its coming: the coming of the assembly is distinguished first. The coming of the assembly has two senses. The first is with respect to complete interfusion: that is, what was made clear before was the differentiated proper positions contained within the universal gate, and therefore it lodged itself in passing through the human and the heavenly; what is made clear now is that the virtue and function that come after the stations do not depart from the universal gate — and so the differentiated assembly enters the universal, and there is this coming of the assembly: the intent of returning to the assembly at Universal Light lies in this.” 〔T35n1735 0840b08–11〕

tr. “The second is with respect to sequence: before, the ten grounds were made clear; now the two awakenings, the equal and the wondrous, are to be displayed, and therefore it comes. Because the utmost fruit proceeds from the first faith, the assembly returns to Universal Light.” 〔0840b12–14〕

The reason for the coming of the chapter is fastened directly upon the question that went before: 「二品來者,為答第二會中十定問故。」 tr. “Second, as for the coming of the chapter: it is in order to answer the question about the ten samādhis raised in the second assembly.” 〔0840b17–18〕

The explanation of the name — the name of the assembly is twofold, with respect to place and with respect to Dharma, while the name of the chapter is an explanation that carries a number:

tr. “Second, as for the name of the chapter: concentration means the one-pointedness of mind upon its object; ten is the round utmost of number; and because the wondrous function of Samantabhadra’s deep concentration has no shore, it lodges itself in ten in order to display the inexhaustible — and therefore it says The Ten Samādhis, which is an explanation that carries a number.” 〔T35n1735 0840b20–23〕

The purport — 「品以普賢三昧無礙自在無邊大用而為宗趣。」 tr. “The chapter takes as its purport the boundless great function of the unobstructed mastery of Samantabhadra’s samādhi.” 〔T35n1735 0840c02–03〕

The five-portion outline of this chapter (Chengguan) — the prologue and request are the first two portions, and take in the whole of the third besides:

tr. “Within the former it is divided into five: first, the portion of the prologue; second, the portion of the request; third, the portion of showing the expounder; fourth, the main portion; fifth, the portion of the exposition.” 〔T35n1735 0841a06–07〕

The finer outline of each portion (all from Chengguan’s Shu):

PortionThe finer outlineWhere it is fastened in the commentary
1. The prologueThree: first, the general display of the three accomplishments · second, under 「始成」 tr. “has just accomplished”, the separate display of the three accomplishments · third, under 「與十佛剎」 tr. “together with ten buddha-lands”, the separate display of the accomplishment of the assembly〔0841a07–09〕
2. The requestFour: first, Universal Eye makes his request · second, under 「佛言」 tr. “the Buddha said”, the Tathāgata permits the question · third, under 「普眼」 tr. “Universal Eye”, he raises the Dharma and asks directly · fourth, under 「佛言善哉」 tr. “the Buddha said, it is good”, the benefit of the question is praised〔0841c01–04〕
3. Showing the expounderSix: first, showing the person and bidding them ask · second, the benefit gained from hearing the name · third, seeking and not seeing · fourth, teaching how seeing arises · fifth, seeking in accordance with the teaching · sixth, manifesting the marks of the body〔0841c04–08〕
4. The main portionFour: first, raising the benefit and bidding him expound · second, under 「何者」 tr. “which are they”, the listing of the names of what is to be expounded · third, under 「此十大」 tr. “these ten great”, the praising of the surpassing virtue of the concentrations · fourth, under 「是故普賢」 tr. “therefore, Samantabhadra”, the concluding exhortation and the accomplishing of the benefit〔0842a26–29〕
5. The expositionThree: first, the general telling upon receiving the charge · second, under 「佛子云何」 tr. “sons of the Buddha, how is it”, the separate explanation of the ten concentrations · third, the general conclusion of the ten numbers〔0842c08–10〕

The 「初承旨總告」 tr. “first, the general telling upon receiving the charge” of the portion of the exposition is the boundary sentence at the end of this unit; from 「二中十定即為十段,各有標、釋、結。就初定」 tr. “within the second, the ten samādhis make ten segments, each having a statement, an explanation, and a conclusion; taking up the first concentration” 〔0842c11〕 onward, one enters 〈The First, the Great Samādhi of Universal Light〉 in this volume.

II. Terminology

ChineseSanskrit as transmitted by the ancient worthies (roman letters · an aid to pronunciation)Where attestedThe essential sense
The ten samādhis / the ten great samādhissamādhi, the transcription itself being what was anciently transmittedChengguan: 「定謂心一境性,十是數之圓極」 tr. “concentration means the one-pointedness of mind upon its object; ten is the round utmost of number” 〔T35n1735 0840b21〕The concentration that is the one-pointedness of mind upon its object; ten being the round utmost of number, it lodges itself in ten in order to display the inexhaustible
The chapter of the ten samādhis of the Tathāgata——Chengguan: 「若依梵本,具云「如來十三昧品」,以等覺三昧上同佛故,三世諸佛之所行,故云如來三昧。」 tr. “If one follows the Sanskrit text, it is given in full as ‘the chapter of the ten samādhis of the Tathāgata’, because the samādhi of equal awakening is above and the same as a buddha’s, and because it is what the buddhas of the three times practise — and therefore it says the samādhi of a Tathāgata.” 〔T35n1735 0840b23–25〕The full name in the Sanskrit text; the translator, taking the sense as running through both cause and fruit, abbreviated the two graphs 「如來」 tr. “Tathāgata” 〔0840b25–26〕
The Sūtra of the Samādhi Asked After by the Bodhisattva Equal Eye——Chengguan: 「又別行本名「等目菩薩所問三昧經」,皆人法雙舉。」 tr. “Further, the separately circulating text is named ‘the Sūtra of the Samādhi Asked After by the Bodhisattva Equal Eye’, and in both of them person and Dharma are raised together.” 〔T35n1735 0840b27–28〕The name of the separately circulating text; the Sanskrit name is a dependent-determinative explanation, the separately circulating one a dependent-agent explanation 〔0840b29〕
The limit of the kṣaṇakṣaṇa, the transcription itself being what was anciently transmittedThis chapter: 「入剎那際諸佛三昧」 tr. “entering the samādhi of all buddhas at the limit of the kṣaṇa” 〔T10n0279 0211a07〕Chengguan: 「時之極促名曰剎那,窮彼剎那時相都寂。 “What is utmost brief in time is named a kṣaṇa; press that kṣaṇa to its end, and the mark of its time is wholly still. A limit that has no limit is named the limit of the kṣaṇa” 〔T35n1735 0841a13–14〕
Śamathaśamatha, the transcription itself being what was anciently transmittedThis chapter: 「住奢摩他最極寂靜」 tr. “abiding in the utmost quiescence of śamatha” 〔T10n0279 0211a09〕Stillness; Chengguan matches it to 「普現三世」 tr. “manifesting the three times universally”, saying 「以見三世平等如理無異為最寂靜」 tr. “to see the three times as even and no different from principle is the utmost quiescence” 〔T35n1735 0841b05–06〕
The samādhi of the lion’s stretching——This chapter: 「入師子奮迅定」 tr. “he has entered the samādhi of the lion’s stretching” (within the Tathāgata’s explanation that Samantabhadra’s dwelling place is very deep)The concentration Samantabhadra has entered; Chengguan judges this passage to be one of the ten phrases of the 「住處甚深」 tr. “the dwelling place is very deep” 〔T35n1735 0841c19–20〕
Asaṃkhyeyaasaṃkhyeya, the transcription itself being what was anciently transmittedThis chapter: 「得十千阿僧祇三昧」 tr. “he obtained ten thousand asaṃkhyeyas of samādhis”The name of a great number; Universal Eye seeks Samantabhadra by the power of these concentrations and still does not see him
Sarvajñāsarvajñā, the transcription itself being what was anciently transmittedThis chapter: 「是以薩婆若安立一切眾生門」 tr. “it is the gate that establishes all sentient beings by Sarvajñā” 〔T10n0279 0213a05〕Omniscience; the ninth of the ten gates
Consecration and investiture with office——This chapter: 「得法王位無量自在,譬如世間灌頂受職」 tr. “he obtains the station of a Dharma king with measureless mastery, just as in the world one is consecrated and invested with office” 〔T10n0279 0213a08〕The worldly king’s being consecrated and granted his station is taken as a simile for obtaining the station of a Dharma king
The explanation that carries a number / the dependent-determinative explanation / the dependent-agent explanation——Chengguan explaining the name of the chapter 〔T35n1735 0840b23〕 · explaining the Sanskrit name and the name of the separately circulating text 〔0840b29〕Three of the six kinds of compound analysis; the chapter name 「十定」 tr. “the ten samādhis” belongs to the explanation that carries a number

III. Similes and Rhetoric

(1) The simile of the conjured form within a conjuring (from the sūtra · the Tathāgata answering Universal Eye’s seeking without finding) — the Tathāgata first asks 「頗有人能說幻術文字中種種幻相所住處不」 tr. “Is there anyone who can say where the manifold conjured forms within a conjuring of letters dwell?”, Universal Eye answers 「不也」 tr. “There is not”, and he then continues, saying 「幻中幻相尚不可說,何況普賢菩薩祕密身境界、祕密語境界、祕密意境界,而於其中能入能見」 tr. “If the conjured form within a conjuring cannot even be spoken of, how much less the secret object of the body, the secret object of the speech, and the secret object of the mind of the bodhisattva Samantabhadra — how could one enter therein and see therein” 〔T10n0279 0212a10〕:

  • The ground of the simile: the conjured forms manifested by a conjuring, whose dwelling place cannot be spoken of.
  • The body of the simile: the three secret objects of Samantabhadra’s body, speech, and mind.
  • The sense displayed: what is utmost in 「不可說」 tr. “beyond speaking” is taken as the term of comparison — the conjured form cannot even be spoken of, how much less the object of Samantabhadra. This is the gathering up of the one sense of 「不見」 tr. “not seeing” within the prologue.

(2) The simile of consecration and investiture (from the sūtra · the praising of the surpassing virtue of the concentrations) — 「得法王位無量自在,譬如世間灌頂受職」 tr. “he obtains the station of a Dharma king with measureless mastery, just as in the world one is consecrated and invested with office” 〔T10n0279 0213a08〕: the worldly king’s receiving consecration and mounting to his station is a simile for the one who enters this samādhi obtaining the station of a Dharma king.

(3) The simile of the lion (from the sūtra · the praising of the surpassing virtue of the concentrations) — 「大悲無畏,猶如師子」 tr. “greatly compassionate and without fear, like a lion”: a simile for the fearlessness of the great compassion of one who enters this concentration.

(4) The simile of the bright lamp of the true Dharma (from the sūtra · the praising of the surpassing virtue of the concentrations) — 「為智慧丈夫,然正法明燈」 tr. “he becomes a hero of wisdom and kindles the bright lamp of the true Dharma”: the kindling of a lamp is a simile for the hero of wisdom shining upon the world.

(5) The simile of the maṇi jewel (from a commentator · Chengguan explaining the ninth phrase of the prologue) — 「一攝無能測身,謂如其勝解而示現身,如摩尼珠,名隨宜出生不失於時」 tr. “First, it takes in the body that none can fathom — that is, manifesting a body in accordance with their superior understanding, as a maṇi jewel does; it is named arising according to what is fitting and not missing the season for it” 〔T35n1735 0841b13–15〕: the maṇi manifests its colour according to the thing before it, a simile for the Tathāgata manifesting a body in accordance with the superior understanding of sentient beings.

(6) The domain of the jeweled net (from a commentator · Chengguan explaining the praise) — 「皆言普入者,一一皆窮帝網境故」 tr. “that all of them say ‘universally enters’ is because each and every one of them exhausts the domain of the jeweled net of Śakra” 〔T35n1735 0842b28〕: the jewels of Śakra’s jeweled net reflecting one another is a simile for the manifold inexhaustibility of ‘universally entering all worlds / all realms of sentient beings / all bodies / the whole Dharma realm’.

(7) The ten thousand kinds of cloud and the quaking in six ways (from the sūtra · the auspicious signs appearing and the benefit being accomplished) — ten clouds are raised together (flowers · garlands · incense · powdered incense · canopies · robes · adorning gear · rare jewels · burning incense · silks), and there follow 「不可說世界六種震動」 tr. “worlds beyond speaking quaked in six ways”, the music heard afar, the light shining universally, and the removal of the three evil destinies. This is the confirming sign that the request for the Dharma has been accomplished; it is not a simile but belongs to the rhetorical manner of amplification: setting things out by tens and measuring them by the unspeakable, of one and the same stroke as the chapter name’s ‘lodging in ten to display the inexhaustible’.

IV. Collation with Parallel Translations

This whole heading is lacking — 〔the sixty-fascicle text lacks it〕.

  • Buddhabhadra’s sixty-fascicle Avataṃsaka T09n0278, the whole table of chapters examined directly: chapter twenty-two, The Ten Grounds 〔0542a05〕 is followed immediately by chapter twenty-three, The Ten Clarities 〔0578a10〕, and between them there is no chapter of ‘the ten samādhis’ or of a like sense. Therefore for this whole chapter (the prologue and request included) there is no corresponding passage in the sixty-fascicle text to collate.
  • Prajña’s forty-fascicle Avataṃsaka T10n0293 corresponds only to chapter thirty-nine of the eighty-fascicle text, on entering the Dharma realm, and does not touch this chapter.
  • Vasubandhu’s Shidi jing lun T26n1522 is a dedicated explanation of chapter twenty-six, The Ten Grounds, and does not touch this chapter.

The limit of the negative proposition: what is listed above was not obtained by searching the sixty-fascicle text with the words of the eighty-fascicle text and finding no hits; it was obtained by collating the structure of the order of the chapters of the sixty-fascicle text itself — the sixty-fascicle text passes from the chapter of the ten grounds directly to the chapter of the ten clarities, and between them there is no place that could hold this chapter. What the chapter of the ten clarities answers is 「十明」 tr. “the ten clarities” among the ten questions of the second assembly, and not 「十定」 tr. “the ten samādhis” (Zhiyan’s Souxuan ji 「〈十忍品〉答此十定」 tr. “the chapter of the ten forbearances answers these ten samādhis” 〔T35n1732 0026a05〕 is another account, recorded under heading six).

V. Scriptural Grounds of Sectarian Doctrine (the doctrinal eye)

(1) Entering the samādhi of all buddhas at the limit of the kṣaṇa = the exhausting of the true source of dharmas — the opening sentence of the prologue, 「於普光明殿入剎那際諸佛三昧」 tr. “in the palace of Universal Light he entered the samādhi of all buddhas at the limit of the kṣaṇa” 〔T10n0279 0211a07〕, Chengguan explains as the first of ten phrases of merit, and judges its sense thus:

tr. “First, entering the samādhi at the limit of the kṣaṇa is the exhausting of the true source of dharmas. That is: what is utmost brief in time is named a kṣaṇa; press that kṣaṇa to its end, and the mark of its time is wholly still. A limit that has no limit is named the limit of the kṣaṇa — and it takes in two phrases, namely the everlasting cutting off of the two practices and the reaching through to the markless Dharma.” 〔T35n1735 0841a12–15〕

tr. “The reason that it is here named in particular the entering of the limit of the kṣaṇa is in order to display that the station of equal awakening is about to be expounded. When the bodhisattva grounds are at their end there is only the impermanence of the encumbrance of fruition; the mark of arising not yet being stilled, it is still named the store-consciousness. If by uninterrupted knowledge one awakens to the first arising of mind, and mind has no first mark, being far removed from subtle thought, then there is no kṣaṇa. Enter this limit, and one sees that the nature of mind constantly abides; it is named ultimate awakening, and therefore it says the samādhi of all buddhas.” 〔T35n1735 0841a17–22〕

(2) The differentiated assembly enters the universal · the virtue and function after the stations do not depart from the universal gate — the reason for returning to the assembly at the palace of Universal Light: before, passing through the human and the heavenly, the earlier five assemblies lodged themselves in the stations to make clear the differentiated proper positions; now what is made clear is that the virtue and function that come after the stations still do not depart from the universal gate, and so 「會別入普」 tr. “the differentiated assembly enters the universal” 〔T35n1735 0840b08–11〕. Li Tongxuan for his part takes this assembly as making clear that the substance of concentration 「遍周」 tr. “pervades everywhere” 〔T36n1739 0767a02〕 — the paths the two houses take differ, and both are recorded.

(3) It has the sense of equal awakening but not the name of equal awakening — Chengguan judges this station of cause, saying:

tr. “Now, at the first: this cause is just equal awakening; but that the text has the sense of equal awakening and not the name of equal awakening is because this equal awakening is also the advancing beyond of the ten grounds — and therefore the several teachings differ in their opening out and drawing together.” 〔T35n1735 0840c10–12〕

tr. “The present sūtra wishes to display that opening out and drawing together are unobstructed, and therefore keeps the sense of it and does not set forth the name.” 〔T35n1735 0840c29–0841a01〕

(4) Lodging in ten to display the inexhaustible — 「十是數之圓極,以普賢深定妙用無涯,寄十以顯無盡」 tr. “ten is the round utmost of number, and because the wondrous function of Samantabhadra’s deep concentration has no shore, it lodges itself in ten in order to display the inexhaustible” 〔T35n1735 0840b21–23〕; and as to the names of the ten concentrations all being called 「大」 tr. “great”, Chengguan explains 「皆云大者,因滿之定稱法界故」 tr. “that all of them say ‘great’ is because a concentration of the fullness of cause is commensurate with the Dharma realm” 〔0842b02–03〕.

(5) Samantabhadra’s dwelling place is very deep · four pairs and eight depths — the sūtra sets out ten phrases explaining why Universal Eye does not see him (from 「普賢菩薩住處甚深不可說故」 tr. “because the dwelling place of the bodhisattva Samantabhadra is very deep and beyond speaking” onward), and Chengguan outlines them:

tr. “Because the dwelling place is very deep, the text has ten phrases: the first phrase is the general, the next eight phrases the particular, and the last phrase the conclusion. Within the particular there are four pairs. The first is the depth of vast knowledge and surpassing concentration: that is, the gate of knowledge being boundless, how should a bounded knowledge behold the working of the concentration? Its rising and sinking are without fear, its opening out and drawing in have mastery, and it may be sought only with a supramundane concentration — therefore it cannot be seen. The next two are the depth of outward function and inward realization; the next two, the depth of obtaining power and completing the body; the last two, the depth of the many guardings and swift realization. By these eight depths, therefore, he cannot be seen.” 〔T35n1735 0841c19–24〕

(6) Ten gates in five pairs · the general gate of all dharmas — of the ten gates from 「此是諸菩薩法相門」 tr. “this is the gate of the marks of the dharmas of the bodhisattvas” onward, within the praising of the surpassing virtue of the concentrations in the main portion, Chengguan judges five pairs: 「十門五對:一境智通悟、二因果遊入、三通辨出處、四佛法所從、五嚴土攝生,罔不由此。」 tr. “Ten gates in five pairs: first, the penetrating awakening of object and knowledge; second, the entering and roaming of cause and fruit; third, the general distinguishing of coming forth and abiding; fourth, that from which the dharmas of a buddha proceed; fifth, the adorning of lands and the gathering in of beings — there is nothing that does not proceed from these.” 〔T35n1735 0842c01–03〕

(7) Universally entering and exhausting the jeweled net — 「皆言普入者,一一皆窮帝網境故」 tr. “that all of them say ‘universally enters’ is because each and every one of them exhausts the domain of the jeweled net of Śakra” 〔T35n1735 0842b28〕 — of the four sentences of universal entering in the sūtra, 「普入一切世界,而於世界無所著」 tr. “he enters universally into all worlds, and yet is attached to no world” and the rest, Chengguan reads them directly by the inexhaustibility of the jeweled net; this is the commentator’s eye for the sense of the inexhaustibility of the ten mysteries within the prologue of this chapter.

VI. Divergent Interpretations of the Commentators

Chengguan, Huayan jing shu T35n1735 (phrase by phrase on the eighty-fascicle text · the principal witness)

The ten phrases of the prologue matched to the twenty-one kinds of merit:

tr. “Within it there are ten phrases, and they take in twenty of the separate phrases among the twenty-one kinds of merit; the general phrase is the having just then accomplished perfect awakening that stands before.” 〔T35n1735 0841a11–12〕

The matching of the ten phrases is set out one by one (the essentials excerpted): 「二以一切智自神通力現如來身者,依通起用」 tr. “second, manifesting the body of a Tathāgata by the spiritual power that is the mastery of omniscience — the function arises in dependence upon the penetration” 〔0841a23–24〕 · 「三清淨無礙,攝三句」 tr. “third, pure and unobstructed — it takes in three phrases” 〔0841a27–28〕 · 「四無所依止無有攀緣,即立不思議」 tr. “fourth, with no place it depends upon and nothing it takes as its object — that is, it establishes the inconceivable” 〔0841b02–03〕 · 「五住奢摩他最極寂靜,即普現三世」 tr. “fifth, abiding in the utmost quiescence of śamatha — that is, manifesting the three times universally” 〔0841b04–05〕 · 「六具大威德,即身恒充滿一切世間」 tr. “sixth, possessed of great awesome virtue — that is, his body ever fills all worlds” 〔0841b06–07〕 · 「七無所染著,即智恒明達一切諸法」 tr. “seventh, without defiling attachment — that is, his knowledge ever shines through all dharmas” 〔0841b08〕 · 「八能令見者悉得開悟,此攝二句」 tr. “eighth, able to cause all who see him to gain awakening — this takes in two phrases” 〔0841b09–10〕 · 「九隨宜出興不失於時,亦攝二句」 tr. “ninth, arising in accordance with what is fitting and not missing the season for it — it likewise takes in two phrases” 〔0841b12–13〕 · 「十恒住一相所謂無相,攝餘五句」 tr. “tenth, ever abiding in a single mark, the mark, that is, of no mark — it takes in the remaining five phrases” 〔0841b16–17〕. For the rest, 「如〈升兜率品〉辨」 tr. “as is distinguished in the chapter on the ascent to the Tuṣita Heaven” 〔0841b19〕.

The five divisions of the accomplishment of the assembly and the symbolic sense of the roll of names:

tr. “Third, within the separate display of the accomplishment of the assembly there are five: first, raising the number; second, under ‘there was not one who did not’, the praising of their virtue; third, under ‘their names were’, the listing of the names; fourth, under ‘such as these’, the concluding of the number; fifth, under ‘in ages past’, the intent of their gathering.” 〔T35n1735 0841b19–22〕

tr. “Third, within the listing of names there are a hundred bodhisattvas. That the first thirty share the name of wisdom is because it displays unmixed virtue. That the seventy bodhisattvas from ‘Mindfulness Adornment’ onward have names of their own is because it displays mixed virtue.” 〔T35n1735 0841b27–29〕

Why it is Universal Eye who makes the request: 「一普眼請問,要以普眼方見普法故」 tr. “First, Universal Eye makes the request, because only with a universal eye can one see the universal Dharma” 〔T35n1735 0841c01–02〕.

The three seekings without seeing: 「第三「其諸菩薩於普賢」下推求不見中,有三推求,皆悉不見。 “Third, within the seeking without seeing under ‘these bodhisattvas, toward Samantabhadra’, there are three seekings, and in all of them they do not see: first, the seeking of thirst and not seeing; second, the renewed observation and not seeing; third, the seeking by the power of samādhi and not seeing” 〔T35n1735 0841c10–13〕; and as to the reason for not seeing at the first seeking, 「威力持者,欲令大眾渴仰,得顯深旨故」 tr. “that it is sustained by his awesome power is because he wishes to make the great assembly thirst, so that the deep purport may be displayed” 〔0841c14–15〕.

The three minds in the teaching of how seeing arises: 「第四教起見方中,初令策勤前心。 tr. “Fourth, within the teaching of how seeing arises: at first he makes the preceding mind strive with diligence. Next, under ‘and again you should’, he sets forth the deep contemplation separately. Above, they had abandoned the object and sought elsewhere, and therefore did not know its substance; now they are made to observe the ten directions together and to know that its substance is everywhere. Below, it is in dependence upon this contemplation that the sight is gained. Last, under ‘vow to be with’, the vow is raised and the aspiration to equal him. These three minds being complete, they are able to gain the sight.” 〔T35n1735 0842a10–14〕

The two senses of why one so deep in station as Universal Eye must yet cultivate contemplation again: 「然普眼位深而猶重習觀修者,略有二意:一位未等故、二示深獎物故。」 tr. “But that Universal Eye, deep in station as he is, must yet cultivate contemplation over again has in brief two senses: first, because his station is not yet equal; second, in order to display the depth and to encourage beings.” 〔T35n1735 0842a15–17〕

tr. “Sixth, under ‘at that time Samantabhadra’, the manifesting of the marks of the body. Within it there are five: first, manifesting the body for the assembly — not seeing displays the depth, and manifesting does not hinder the function.” 〔T35n1735 0842a17–18〕

The names of the ten concentrations explained one by one (in the passage of the listing of names in the main portion) — 「一普光者,身心業用周遍全包為普,智照自在名光」 tr. “first, as for universal light: the deeds and functions of body and mind being everywhere and wholly contained is ‘universal’, and the illumination of knowledge having mastery is named ‘light’” 〔0842b03–04〕 · 「二妙光者,身智遍照為光,勝用交映為妙」 tr. “second, as for wondrous light: body and knowledge illuminating everywhere is ‘light’, and surpassing functions reflecting one within another is ‘wondrous’” 〔0842b04–05〕 · 「三十方無餘之剎皆至入定為遍往,往無雜亂、不礙時節歷然為次第」 tr. “third, reaching and entering concentration in every land of the ten directions without remainder is ‘going everywhere’, and going without confusion, the seasons standing distinct and unhindered, is ‘in succession’” 〔0842b05–07〕 · 「四明達諸法本自清淨,離於想念契理深心,依此起用遍供諸佛,請法起說名之為行」 tr. “fourth, clearly reaching through to the original purity of all dharmas, and the deep mind that is apart from conception and accords with principle; the function that arises in dependence upon this, making offerings everywhere to the buddhas and requesting the Dharma so that the exposition arises, is named ‘practice’” 〔0842b08–10〕 · 「五佛出劫剎等事皆名莊嚴,過去門中包此無盡為藏」 tr. “fifth, such matters as the arising of buddhas, the kalpas, and the lands are all named ‘adornment’, and the containing of this inexhaustibly within the gate of the past is ‘treasury’” 〔0842b10–11〕 · 「六未來藏中包含諸佛及佛法等名之為藏,智慧徹照稱曰光明」 tr. “sixth, the containing of the buddhas and the dharmas of a buddha and the rest within the treasury of the future is named ‘treasury’, and wisdom shining through is called ‘light’” 〔0842b13–15〕 · 「七現在諸佛作用、眾會身相益物皆曰莊嚴,橫遍十方故云一切,現可目覩故不云藏」 tr. “seventh, the workings of the present buddhas and the bodily marks of the assemblies benefiting beings are all called ‘adornment’; because it spreads across the ten directions it says ‘all’, and because it may presently be beheld with the eye it does not say ‘treasury’” 〔0842b15–17〕 · 「八於差別眾生身內外入定起定皆自在故,雖通三種世間,從多但云眾生」 tr. “eighth, because within and without the differentiated bodies of sentient beings the entering and rising from concentration are alike with mastery; and though it runs through the three kinds of world, following the greater part it says only ‘sentient beings’” 〔0842b17–18〕 · 「九於眼等十八界自在入出,又知事法界邊際與理法界無礙自在故」 tr. “ninth, because in the eighteen elements, the eye and the rest, he enters and comes forth with mastery, and further knows the bound of the phenomenal Dharma realm together with unobstructed mastery in the principial Dharma realm” 〔0842b19–21〕 · 「十無礙輪者,三輪攝化皆自在故」 tr. “tenth, as for the unobstructed wheel: because in the three wheels the gathering in and converting are alike with mastery” 〔0842b21〕.

The reconciling of the opening out and drawing together of equal awakening among the several teachings (Chengguan recording the divergent accounts of the several teachings):

tr. “The Renwang jing and the rest draw this advancing beyond together into the ten grounds, and therefore do not set up equal awakening; and so in the chapter on converting, taking the five forbearances as the division of stations, within the forbearance of quiescence there are only an upper and a lower: the practice within the lower forbearance is named a bodhisattva, which is the tenth ground; the practice within the upper forbearance is Sarvajñā, and this means a Tathāgata.” 〔T35n1735 0840c12–16〕

tr. “If one follows the Yingluo, it opens this advancing beyond out as the Stainless Ground, which is equal awakening. Yet equal awakening illumines the still, while wondrous awakening is stillness illumining.” 〔T35n1735 0840c16–18〕

tr. “The Yuqie has both senses: in the seventy-eighth fascicle it cites the Shenmi jing as expounding eleven grounds, the tenth being Dharma Cloud and the eleventh named the Buddha-Ground, and there are only twenty-two follies, and at the time of obtaining the Buddha-Ground two follies are cut off … cutting these off, one is then able to realize great awakening; and it does not separately expound a cutting off and realizing of equal awakening. Yet the treatise has text besides that also sets up equal awakening.” 〔T35n1735 0840c19–25〕

And he cites the chapter on the bodhisattva ground, saying: 「此菩薩雖已修行功德海滿,由未能捨三種法故,不名妙覺。 tr. “Though this bodhisattva has already cultivated to the fullness of the sea of merit, because he is not yet able to relinquish three dharmas he is not named wondrous awakening: first, because he has not yet relinquished the inferior undefiled dharmas; second, because he has not yet relinquished the pure white indeterminate dharmas; third, because he has not yet relinquished the defiled wholesome dharmas — only on reaching the station of wondrous awakening does he relinquish these three.” 〔T35n1735 0840c25–29〕

Supplementary verbatim record of the passage of Chengguan cited in the exposition (the four rounds of praise of the surpassing virtue of concentration): 「三歎定勝德,於中四:一約人以歎,人勝故法勝。」 tr. “Third, praise of the surpassing virtue of concentration, within which there are four: first, praise with respect to the person — the person being surpassing, therefore the Dharma is surpassing.” tr. “praise directly of the Dharma, making clear that these ten concentrations contain all dharmas, each surpassing in substance, mark, function, and the rest.” “praise with respect to realization” 〔0842c04〕

Fazang, Tanxuan ji T35n1733

〔not found〕 — the sixty-fascicle Avataṃsaka has no chapter of the ten samādhis, and the Tanxuan ji is a commentary on the sixty-fascicle text; therefore there is no separate section explaining this chapter (the search made: 「十定品」 tr. “the chapter of the ten samādhis”, with no hits in the whole file).

Zhiyan, Souxuan ji T35n1732

No separate section explaining this chapter; three scattered back-references: 「次十定等十四句」 tr. “next the fourteen phrases of the ten samādhis and the rest” 〔0026a01〕 · 「〈十忍品〉答此十定」 tr. “the chapter of the ten forbearances answers these ten samādhis” 〔0026a05〕 · 「十定可知」 tr. “the ten samādhis may be known” 〔0077b07〕. All three are mentioned within outlines elsewhere, and none is text explaining the prologue of this chapter.

Li Tongxuan, Xin Huayan jing lun T36n1739 (a differing track of symbolic reading)

His treatise does not outline and explain this chapter section by section, and takes the ten samādhis as one gate only where he discusses the five stations of the Dharma gate in general:

tr. “Third, the substance of concentration pervades everywhere — that is, the chapters of the ten samādhis, the ten spiritual penetrations, the ten forbearances, and the rest.” 〔T36n1739 0767a02〕

“Third, the chapter of the ten samādhis: the Tathāgata enters the samādhi at the limit of the kṣaṇa, and by this samādhi universally” 〔T36n1739 0769c23〕

He further fastens this chapter, together with the Chapter on Detachment from the World, upon the first assembly that precedes: 「故,是故〈十定品〉及〈離世間品〉皆敘前之初會」 tr. “therefore, and for this reason the chapter of the ten samādhis and the Chapter on Detachment from the World both set forth the first assembly that precedes” 〔T36n1739 0765b03〕; and he judges its position, saying 「第九明因果位終者,從〈十定品〉、〈十通品〉、〈十忍」 tr. “ninth, making clear the end of the stations of cause and fruit: from the chapter of the ten samādhis, the chapter of the ten spiritual penetrations, the ten forbearances” 〔T36n1739 0765a10〕. He records also the sameness of the opening sentences of the two chapters: 「如〈十定品〉、〈離世間品〉皆云「爾時世尊在」」 tr. “as the chapter of the ten samādhis and the Chapter on Detachment from the World both say ‘at that time the World-Honored One was in’” 〔T36n1739 0762a29〕.

Recorded Without Adjudication

Chengguan, following the opening out and drawing together of the assemblies and stations and the track of outlining that has come down since the Shidi jing lun, judges this chapter to be the cause of equal awakening while 「存其義不彰其名」 tr. “keeping the sense of it and not setting forth the name”, and reconciles the differing openings and drawings together of the Renwang, the Yingluo, and the Yuqie. Li Tongxuan for his part takes 「定體遍周」 tr. “the substance of concentration pervades everywhere” as one gate of the five stations of the Dharma gate, and on the strength of the sameness of the opening sentence with the first assembly fastens this chapter upon the assembly that precedes. Zhiyan for his part, elsewhere, has the chapter of the ten forbearances answer the question of the ten samādhis. The tracks the three houses follow are each different — one following the outline of assemblies and stations, one following the threading through of symbolic reading, one following the matching of question to answer — and all are established accounts of the ancient worthies; they are recorded, and no adjudication is made of higher or lower. The absence in Fazang’s Tanxuan ji for this chapter is brought about by the sixty-fascicle text having no such chapter; it belongs to the limits of the witnesses and is not a divergent interpretation.

VII. Cross-Reading and Lineage

  • The carrying on within the treatises of the Huayan house — 〔not found〕: for the four works, the Wujiao zhang T45n1866 · the Shixuan men T45n1868 · the Fajie xuanjing T45n1883 · the Huanyuan guan T45n1876, the mechanical count of 「十定」 tr. “the ten samādhis” is nil in every case, and none of the four touches the prologue of this chapter. The absence is recorded in accordance with fact, and is not filled out with text from elsewhere.
  • Cross-reading within the chapter: Chengguan, explaining the ten phrases of the prologue, says at the end 「餘如〈升兜率品〉辨」 tr. “for the rest, as is distinguished in the chapter on the ascent to the Tuṣita Heaven” 〔T35n1735 0841b19〕 — the full explanation of the twenty-one kinds of merit lies in the commentary on that chapter, and this chapter takes only its twenty separate phrases and matches them; one who reads this passage should turn back to that chapter.
  • Cross-reading within the assembly: this chapter is the first of the eleven chapters of the seventh assembly. Chengguan judges that this assembly 「有十一品經,分二:前六明因圓、後五明果滿」 tr. “has eleven chapters of sūtra, divided into two: the first six make clear the fullness of cause, the last five the fullness of fruit” 〔T35n1735 0840c03–04〕, and further that 「前六品明位後因相、後三品明差別果相」 tr. “the first six chapters make clear the marks of cause after the stations, and the last three chapters the marks of the differentiated fruit” 〔0840c05–06〕; and this chapter makes a pair with the chapter of the ten spiritual penetrations: 「前中亦二:初品就定明用、後品就通明用」 tr. “within the former there are likewise two: the first chapter makes the function clear with respect to concentration, and the latter chapter makes the function clear with respect to the penetrations” 〔0841a05–06〕 — concentration and penetration raised as a pair, and this is the coordinate of assembly and station for reading the prologue of this chapter.
  • The carrying on of question and answer: what this chapter answers is the question about the ten samādhis among the ten questions of the second assembly 〔T35n1735 0840b17–18〕; Zhiyan separately fastens the chapter of the ten forbearances as the answer to these ten samādhis 〔T35n1732 0026a05〕. Both accounts are recorded.

VIII. Edition Location Register

  • Śikṣānanda T279 (the base text): the line of the chapter title, chapter twenty-seven, The Ten Samādhis 〔T10n0279 0211a05〕; this unit begins 〔0211a06〕 at 「爾時,世尊在摩竭提國阿蘭若法菩提場中始成正覺,於普光明殿入剎那際諸佛三昧」 tr. “At that time the World-Honored One was in the land of Magadha, at the place of awakening of the araṇya Dharma, having just then accomplished perfect awakening; and in the palace of Universal Light he entered the samādhi of all buddhas at the limit of the kṣaṇa”, and ends 〔up to just before 0213a22〕. The locations already verified within this passage: Universal Eye receives the spiritual power of the Buddha, rises from his seat, and makes his request 〔0211b20〕 · the Tathāgata permits the question and shows Samantabhadra 〔0211b23〕 · Universal Eye asks where Samantabhadra now is 〔0211c17〕 · the Buddha answers that Samantabhadra is here in this assembly at the place of awakening 〔0211c18〕 · seeking by the power of samādhi and not seeing 〔0211c29–0212a03〕 · Universal Eye rises from samādhi and states of himself that he does not see 〔0212a03〕 · the simile of the conjured form within a conjuring 〔0212a08–a10〕 · the assembly pays reverence and the Buddha tells the assembly 〔0212a21–a24〕 · the auspicious signs appear and the benefit is accomplished 〔0212b02–b11〕 · Universal Eye praises the ten abidings of Samantabhadra 〔0212b24〕 · the Tathāgata tells Samantabhadra, entrusting him to expound the ten great samādhis 〔0212c05〕 · the listing of the names of the ten samādhis 〔0212c09–c10〕 · the last two of the ten gates 〔0213a06〕 · the opening sentence of the praise with respect to realization, 「若菩薩入此三昧」 tr. “if a bodhisattva enters this samādhi” 〔0213a07〕 · the sentence on consecration and investiture 〔0213a08〕 · the concluding exhortation, 「是故,普賢! tr. “Therefore, Samantabhadra! You should now distinguish and expound at length the ten great samādhis of all bodhisattvas, for the assembly of this gathering all wish to hear them.” 〔0213a19–a21〕 · the boundary sentence, 「爾時,普賢菩薩承如來旨」 tr. “at that time the bodhisattva Samantabhadra, receiving the intent of the Tathāgata” 〔0213a21〕.
    • The limit of the locations (recorded in accordance with fact): the locations listed above have all been fixed verbatim. For the remaining scriptural sentences of this passage (such as 「入師子奮迅定」 tr. “he has entered the samādhi of the lion’s stretching”, 「得十千阿僧祇三昧」 tr. “he obtained ten thousand asaṃkhyeyas of samādhis”, and 「大悲無畏,猶如師子」 tr. “greatly compassionate and without fear, like a lion”), the locations at the level of the line have not been fixed; this file in no case fabricates a line number, and merely states the text without fastening a location to it.
  • Buddhabhadra T278: 〔the sixty-fascicle text lacks it〕 — chapter twenty-two, The Ten Grounds 0542a05 · chapter twenty-three, The Ten Clarities 0578a10, with no corresponding chapter between them.
  • Chengguan, Huayan jing shu T35n1735: the commentary on the chapter of the ten samādhis begins 0840b07 (the reason for its coming 0840b08 · the explanation of the name 0840b18 · the purport 0840b29 · the direct explanation of the text 0840c03 · the outline into five portions 0841a06 · the ten phrases of the prologue matched to the merits 0841a11–b19 · the five divisions of the accomplishment of the assembly 0841b19–29 · the four divisions of the portion of the request 0841c01–04 · the six divisions of the portion of showing the expounder 0841c04–08 · the three seekings without seeing 0841c10–13 · the four pairs and eight depths of the depth of the dwelling place 0841c19–24 · the three minds in the teaching of how seeing arises 0842a10–14 · the manifesting of the marks of the body 0842a17–22 · the four divisions of the main portion 0842a26–29 · the explanation of the names of the ten samādhis one by one 0842b02–23 · the ten gates in five pairs 0842c01–03 · the three divisions of the portion of the exposition 0842c08–10); the boundary sentence from this unit to s01 stands in the commentary as 「二中十定即為十段,各有標、釋、結。就初定」 tr. “within the second, the ten samādhis make ten segments, each having a statement, an explanation, and a conclusion; taking up the first concentration” 〔0842c11〕. • The four compendia of the doctrinal classification of the Huayan house: 〔not found〕 (no hits for 「十定」 tr. “the ten samādhis”).
  • Variant readings: within the range of T279 covered by this unit, 〔0211a05〕–〔0213a21〕, the Taishō base text carries 5 collation notes, recorded one by one without adjudication (base reading 【大】|variant readings of other witnesses, several witnesses separated by /): 〔0211b14〕通【大】|踊【宋】【元】【明】【宮】 · 〔0212b18〕綵【大】|采【宋】 · 〔0212c02〕不【大】*|無此字【聖】*(*同校並繫〔0213c16〕之不字) · 〔0213a03〕幢【大】|憧【聖】 · 〔0213a04〕辯【大】*|辨【聖】*(*同校並繫〔0213b09〕之辯字). (* = a Taishō asterisked collation: the same note also governs the remaining occurrences of that graph in the text; for notes of this class the T279 XML supplies no corresp for the recurrences, so the asterisk alone is shown and no second anchor is created.)
