Avataṃsaka Sūtra · The Merit of the Light of the Secondary Signs of the Tathāgata

〔T10 0255c11〕
心要Essence

The one who expounds the Dharma here is not the Buddha. It is a drum.

A single light shines the beings of the hells up into heaven. They give rise to a doubt: a sound so lovely as this — where does it come from? The drum answers: it does not come from the east, nor from the south, the west, the north, the four intermediate quarters, the zenith, or the nadir. And it says further: that hell-body you wore yesterday has no place it comes from either.

And what of the sins? Deeds do not come from the ten quarters, and yet they truly gather upon the mind; they are born only of inversion, and have nowhere they abide. The drum holds up a mirror: mountains and rivers and beings, and even the images of the hells, all appear within it — did those images ever come? The sons of the gods answer: “They cannot be said to.”

‘If one is able to know in this way, this is true repentance.’

So repentance turns out not to be a transaction. It is a seeing clearly. Listen, then, to this drum.

Plain reading

The Secondary Sign Perfect Fullness King: From the Sign a Light Goes Forth, Named Blazing

At that time the World-Honored One told the bodhisattva Jewel Hand, saying —

“Sons of the Buddha! The Tathāgata, the Worthy One (the one worthy to receive offerings), the Perfectly Awakened One, has a secondary sign (a fine excellence that follows upon the great marks), named Perfect Fullness King. From within this one secondary sign a great light goes forth, named Blazing, having seven million asaṃkhyeyas (a number beyond all reckoning) of lights as its retinue.

Light Sent Forth in Tuṣita: The Beings of the Hells Meet the Light, and Their Sufferings Cease

“Sons of the Buddha! When I was still a bodhisattva, in the palace of the Tuṣita Heaven I sent forth a great light, named Light-Banner King, which shone through worlds as many as the dust motes of ten buddha-lands. Of the beings in the hells within those worlds, those who met this light had their manifold sufferings brought to rest, and obtained ten kinds of pure eye, and their ears, noses, tongues, bodies, and minds likewise obtained ten kinds of purity; they all gave rise to joy and leapt up rejoicing, and when their lives there ended they were born in the Tuṣita Heaven.

The Drum’s First Sounding: Because Your Minds Were Not Heedless, You Planted Roots of Goodness

“In that heaven there is a drum, named Most Delightful. As soon as those gods are born up there, this drum gives forth a sound and tells them: ‘Sons of the gods! Because your minds were not heedless, you planted the manifold roots of goodness in the presence of the Tathāgata, and in former times you drew near to a multitude of good friends; and by the great awesome spiritual power of Vairocana, when your lives there ended you came to be born in this heaven.’

The Thousand-Spoked Wheel Beneath the Feet: One Light Shines on a Koṭi of Lands, and the Beings of Avīci Are Born in Heaven

“Sons of the Buddha! The mark of the thousand-spoked wheel beneath the feet of the bodhisattva is named Light Universally Shining King. Herein there is a secondary sign, named Perfect Fullness King, which ever sends forth forty kinds of light. Among them there is one light, named Pure Merit, which is able to shine through worlds as many as the dust motes of a koṭi of nayutas of buddha-lands, and which, following upon the manifold deeds and the manifold desires and delights of beings, brings them all to ripeness. Those beings in the Avīci hell who undergo the utmost suffering, when they meet this light, all end their lives there and are born in the Tuṣita Heaven.

The Drum Sounds Again: The Bodhisattva Vairocana Enters the Samādhi of Parting from Defilement

“When they have been born in that heaven, they hear the sound of the heavenly drum telling them: ‘Excellent, excellent! Sons of the gods! The bodhisattva Vairocana has entered the samādhi of parting from defilement; you should reverently pay homage to him.’

The Sons of the Gods Give Rise to Doubt: By What Cause Is So Subtle and Wondrous a Sound Sent Forth

“Then the sons of the gods, hearing the sound of the heavenly drum admonishing them in this way, all gave rise to this thought: ‘How strange and rare it is! By what cause is a sound so subtle and wondrous as this sent forth?’

The Drum Declares Itself (One): I Say ‘I’ and Do Not Cling to a Self; the Sound Comes Not from the Ten Quarters

“Then the heavenly drum told the sons of the gods: ‘The sound that I send forth is accomplished by the power of the manifold roots of goodness. Sons of the gods! It is as when I say “I” and yet do not cling to there being a self, nor cling to there being anything that belongs to a self; and all the buddhas are likewise — they say of themselves “I am the Buddha,” and yet do not cling to a self, do not cling to what belongs to a self. Sons of the gods! It is as with my sound: it does not come from the east, nor does it come from the south, the west, the north, the four intermediate quarters (the four corners), the zenith, or the nadir; and the becoming of a buddha through the recompense of karma is likewise — it does not come from the ten quarters.

The Drum Declares Itself (Two): The Hell and the Body Have No Root and No Place They Come From

‘Sons of the gods! It is as with your being in the hells in former times: that hell and that hell-body did not come from the ten quarters; it was only through your inverted evil deeds and the entanglement of delusion that a hell-body was born. That body has no root, and there is no place it comes from. Sons of the gods! The bodhisattva Vairocana, by the power of his awesome virtue, sends forth a great light, and that light too does not come from the ten quarters. Sons of the gods! The sound of me, the heavenly drum, is likewise: it does not come from the ten quarters. It is only by the power of the roots of goodness of samādhi, and by the awesome power of prajñā-pāramitā (the wisdom that goes to the other shore), that a pure sound such as this is brought forth, displaying manifold sovereign masteries such as these.

The Drum Declares Itself (Three): The Instruments of Pleasure Come Not from the Ten Quarters; Teaching Beings as Many as Dust Motes, It Grows Not Weary

‘Sons of the gods! It is as with the exquisite palaces and the manifold instruments of pleasure of the Thirty-Three Gods upon Sumeru, king of mountains: those instruments of pleasure do not come from the ten quarters; and the sound of me, the heavenly drum, is likewise — it does not come from the ten quarters. Sons of the gods! Suppose worlds as many as the dust motes of a koṭi of nayutas of buddha-lands were all ground into dust: for beings as many as that number of dust motes I expound the Dharma according to what they love and delight in, causing them to give rise to great joy; and yet toward them I grow not weary, I do not shrink back, I do not grow arrogant, I do not become heedless. Sons of the gods! The bodhisattva Vairocana, dwelling in the samādhi of parting from defilement, is likewise: from within one secondary sign in the palm of his right hand he sends forth a single light, and there appear measureless sovereign spiritual powers, which not even all the śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas are able to know — how much less ordinary beings!

The Drum’s Admonition: Do Not Cling to the Five Desires; Know Kindness and Repay It

‘Sons of the gods! You should go to the place of that bodhisattva, to draw near to him and make offerings, and no longer be greedily attached to the instruments of the five desires; to be greedily attached to the pleasure of the five desires screens off the manifold roots of goodness. Sons of the gods! It is as when the fire at the end of the kalpa burns Sumeru: it burns it away utterly, so that nothing at all is left; and the entanglement of greed and desire about the mind is likewise — in the end the intention of mindfulness of the Buddha cannot arise. Sons of the gods! You should know kindness and repay kindness. Sons of the gods! Those beings who do not know how to repay kindness for the most part meet with untimely death and are born in the hells. Sons of the gods! In former times you were in the hells, and you received the shining of the light upon your bodies, and forsaking that place you were born here; now you should quickly dedicate and direct what you have gained, and increase your roots of goodness.

The Drum’s Closing Word: Neither Male nor Female; the Five Aggregates Neither Arise nor Cease

‘Sons of the gods! It is as with me, this heavenly drum: I am neither male nor female, and yet I am able to bring forth measureless, boundless, inconceivable things; and you sons of the gods and daughters of the gods are likewise — neither male nor female, and yet able to enjoy the manifold exquisite palaces and gardens. And as with me, this heavenly drum, which neither arises nor ceases, so form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are likewise, neither arising nor ceasing. If you are able to awaken and understand herein, know that this is to enter the samādhi of the seal of no reliance.’

The Sons of the Gods Conjure Clouds and Go: They Wished to Look Up and Behold Him, and Could Not See Him

“Then the sons of the gods, having heard this sound, gained what they had never had before, and thereupon they all conjured up ten thousand clouds of flowers, ten thousand clouds of incense, ten thousand clouds of music, ten thousand clouds of banners, ten thousand clouds of canopies, and ten thousand clouds of songs of praise; and the conjuring done, they went together to the palace where the bodhisattva Vairocana dwelt, joined their palms in reverence and stood to one side, wishing to look up and behold him — and yet they could not see him.

Seen with the Heavenly Eye: The Bodhisattva Has Been Born in the House of King Śuddhodana

“Then one son of the gods spoke thus: ‘The bodhisattva Vairocana has already passed away from this place and has been born among men in the house of King Śuddhodana; riding in a sandalwood tower, he dwells within the womb of Lady Māyā.’ Then the sons of the gods, looking with the heavenly eye, saw the body of the bodhisattva there among men in the house of King Śuddhodana, with Brahmā and the gods of the realm of desire attending upon him and making offerings. The host of the sons of the gods all gave rise to this thought: ‘If we do not go to the place of the bodhisattva to ask after his welfare, and if there be so much as a single thought of clinging attachment to this heavenly palace, that would be greatly unfitting.’ Then each son of the gods, with ten nayutas of retinue, wished to descend to Jambudvīpa.

The Drum’s Fourth Sounding: He Did Not End His Life Here to Be Born There

“Then from within the heavenly drum a sound came forth telling them: ‘Sons of the gods! The bodhisattva-mahāsattva did not end his life in this place and go to be born over there; it is only by the power of spiritual penetration that, according to what suits the minds of beings, he lets them see him. Sons of the gods! It is as with me now: I am not what the eye is able to see, and yet I am able to give forth sound; and the bodhisattva-mahāsattva entering the samādhi of parting from defilement is likewise — he is not what the eye is able to see, and yet he is able to display his taking of birth in place after place, apart from discrimination, having put away arrogance, without defiling attachment.

Repenting and Removing the Four Obstructions: Purify the Mind, Abide in Good Deportment

‘Sons of the gods! You should give rise to the mind of unsurpassed perfect awakening (the mind set upon the unsurpassed, right, and universal awakening), purify and order your own minds, abide in good deportment, and repent and remove all obstructions of karma, obstructions of afflictions, obstructions of recompense, and obstructions of views; with bodies as many as the number of the beings of the whole Dharma realm, with heads as many as the number of the beings of the whole Dharma realm, with tongues as many as the number of the beings of the whole Dharma realm, and with good deeds of body, good deeds of speech, and good deeds of mind as many as the number of the beings of the whole Dharma realm, repent and remove all the manifold obstructions and faults.’

The Sons of the Gods Ask: How Does One Repent and Remove All Faults

“Then the sons of the gods, having heard these words, gained what they had never had before, and their minds greatly rejoiced, and they asked: ‘How is it that the bodhisattva-mahāsattva repents and removes all faults?’

The Drum Answers (One): Deeds Come Not from Any Quarter, but Are Born Only of Inversion

At that time the heavenly drum, by the power of the roots of goodness of the bodhisattva’s samādhi, gave forth a sound telling them: ‘Sons of the gods! The bodhisattva knows that the manifold deeds do not come from the east, nor come from the south, the west, the north, the four intermediate quarters, the zenith, or the nadir, but are gathered together in common and come to rest within the mind; they are born only of inversion, and have no place where they abide. The bodhisattva sees this with decisive clarity, and has no doubt.

The Drum Answers (Two): It Speaks of a Self and of What Belongs to a Self, While in Truth There Is No Self and Nothing Belonging to a Self

‘Sons of the gods! It is as with me, this heavenly drum, which speaks of deeds, speaks of the fruits of recompense, speaks of practice, speaks of the precepts, speaks of gladness, speaks of ease, and speaks of the manifold samādhis; and the buddhas and bodhisattvas are likewise — they speak of a self, speak of what belongs to a self, speak of sentient beings, speak of greed and anger and delusion and the manifold deeds, and yet in truth there is no self, nor is there anything that belongs to a self. The manifold deeds that are done and the fruits of recompense in the six destinies, sought for throughout the ten quarters, are altogether not to be found.

The Drum Answers (Three): Neither Arising nor Ceasing; Whoever Cultivates and Gathers Undergoes the Recompense

‘Sons of the gods! It is as with my sound, which neither arises nor ceases — the gods who have done evil do not hear the other sounds, but hear only the sound that startles them awake with the affairs of the hells; and all the manifold deeds are likewise: neither arising nor ceasing, but only, according to whoever has cultivated and gathered them, does that one undergo their recompense. Sons of the gods! As with the sound that I, the heavenly drum, send forth: through measureless kalpas it cannot be exhausted and it has no break in it, and to speak of its coming or to speak of its going is altogether not to be found. Sons of the gods! If there were a coming and a going, one would fall into the view of annihilation and the view of permanence; the buddhas in the end do not expound a dharma that has annihilation or permanence, save as a skillful means for bringing beings to ripeness. Sons of the gods! It is as with my sound, which within measureless worlds, following the minds of beings, causes them all to be able to hear it; and all the buddhas are likewise — following the minds of beings, they cause them all to be able to see.

The Simile of the Crystal Mirror: The Reflected Images Neither Enter nor Go Out

‘Sons of the gods! Suppose there were a crystal mirror, named Able to Shine, pure and reflecting through and through, exactly equal in measure to ten worlds; and within measureless, boundless lands, all the mountains and rivers, all sentient beings, and even the hells, the animals, and the hungry ghosts — all their reflected images appear within that mirror. Sons of the gods! What do you think? Can those reflected images be said to enter into the mirror and to go out from the mirror?’

“They answered: ‘They cannot.’

The Simile of the Illusionist: If One Knows in This Way, It Is True Repentance

‘Sons of the gods! All the manifold deeds are likewise: though they are able to bring forth the manifold fruits of recompense, they have no place they come from and no place they go to. Sons of the gods! It is as when an illusionist deludes the eyes of men — know that the manifold deeds are likewise. If one is able to know in this way, this is true repentance, and all sins and evils are made pure.’

The Benefit of the Teaching: The Forbearance of the Non-Arising of Dharmas · the Daughters of the Gods Forsake Their Bodies

“When this Dharma was spoken, the sons of the Tuṣita gods within worlds as many as the dust motes of a hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of buddha-lands obtained the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas; measureless, inconceivable asaṃkhyeyas of the sons of the gods of the six heavens of desire gave rise to the mind of unsurpassed perfect awakening; and all the daughters of the gods within the six heavens of desire forsook the body of a woman and gave rise to the intention set upon unsurpassed awakening.

They See Seven-Jeweled Lotus Flowers: Yet Not Even a Small Part of the Power of the Samādhi of Parting from Defilement Is Displayed

“At that time the sons of the gods, because they had heard the vast dedication of Samantabhadra, because they had obtained the ten grounds, because they had gained the samādhi adorned with the manifold powers, and because with pure deeds of the three kinds as many as the number of beings they had repented and removed all the heavy obstructions, thereupon saw seven-jeweled lotus flowers as many as the dust motes of a hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of buddha-lands; upon each and every flower there was a bodhisattva seated cross-legged, sending forth a great light; and each single secondary sign of those bodhisattvas sent forth lights as many as the number of beings; and within those lights there were buddhas as many as the number of beings, seated cross-legged, expounding the Dharma according to the minds of beings — and yet all of this did not yet display even a small part of the power of the samādhi of parting from defilement.

Clouds of Flowers, Clouds of Incense, Clouds of Canopies: The Eighty-Four Thousand Afflictions Are All Empty and False

“At that time those sons of the gods, with the manifold flowers spoken of above, further conjured within each and every pore of their bodies clouds of manifold wondrous flowers as many as the number of beings, and made offering with them to Vairocana Tathāgata, scattering them upon the Buddha, and they all came to rest upon the Buddha’s body. Those clouds of incense rained down everywhere upon worlds as many as the dust motes of measureless buddha-lands. If there were beings whose bodies received that incense, their bodies were at ease, as when a monk enters the fourth dhyāna, and all their obstructions of karma were melted away. If there were those who smelled that incense, then as regards form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, those beings have within them five hundred afflictions and have without them five hundred afflictions as well; those in whom the practice of greed is much have twenty-one thousand, those in whom the practice of anger is much have twenty-one thousand, those in whom the practice of delusion is much have twenty-one thousand, and those in whom the three are in equal parts have twenty-one thousand — and they know that all of this is empty and false. Having known it in this way, they accomplished the roots of goodness of the pure light of the sovereign mastery of the cloud of incense-banners. If there were beings who saw that cloud of canopies, they planted roots of goodness as many as the sands of one Gaṅgā of a pure golden-net wheel-turning king.

Abiding in the Station of the Wheel-Turning King: The Tathāgata Moon Wisdom of the World Bright Mirror

“Sons of the Buddha! The bodhisattva, abiding in this station of the wheel-turning king, teaches and transforms beings within worlds as many as the dust motes of a hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of buddha-lands. Sons of the Buddha! It is as with the Tathāgata Moon Wisdom of the world Bright Mirror: there are ever monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen from measureless worlds who manifest their bodies there and come to hear the Dharma, and the Tathāgata expounds for them at length the affairs of his former births, without ever an interval of a single thought. If there are beings who hear the name of that buddha, they will surely be born in that buddha’s land; and it is so too with the bodhisattva abiding in the station of the pure golden-net wheel-turning king: if there be one who only for a moment meets his light, that one will surely obtain the station of the bodhisattva’s tenth ground — and this is by the power of the roots of goodness of his former practice.

The Simile of the First Dhyāna · the Light of the Maṇi Topknot: All Obtain the Station of the Tenth Ground

“Sons of the Buddha! It is as with one who has obtained the first dhyāna: though he has not yet ended his life, he already sees all the palaces in the place of Brahmā and is able to receive the ease and joy of the Brahmā world; and it is so too with all those who have obtained the meditative concentrations. The bodhisattva-mahāsattva, abiding in the station of the pure golden-net wheel-turning king, sends forth the pure light of the maṇi topknot; and if there are beings who meet this light, they all obtain the station of the bodhisattva’s tenth ground, accomplish measureless light of wisdom, obtain ten kinds of pure eye and so on to ten kinds of pure mind, are furnished with measureless and most profound samādhis, and accomplish a pure fleshly eye such as this.

The Simile of the Dust Motes: Is Such a Buddha-Land, Vast and Measureless, to Be Conceived

“Sons of the Buddha! Suppose a man were to crush a koṭi of nayutas of buddha-lands into dust motes, and take one dust mote as one buddha-land, and crush each of these buddha-lands in turn into dust motes; and suppose he were to place all such dust motes in his left hand and, carrying them, go eastward, passing worlds as many as that number of dust motes before setting down a single mote, and go eastward in this way until these dust motes were used up; and suppose it were so likewise toward the south, the west, the north, the four intermediate quarters, the zenith, and the nadir; and suppose that all the worlds of the ten quarters, both those upon which a dust mote had been set and those upon which none had been set, were all gathered together into one buddha-land. Jewel Hand! What do you think? Is such a buddha-land, vast and measureless, to be conceived?”

Jewel Hand Answers · the Buddha Confers a Prediction: Eighty Turns of Dust Motes, Seen Clearly in One Thought by the Pure Fleshly Eye

He answered: “It cannot be conceived! Such a buddha-land, vast and measureless, is rare and marvelous, and cannot be conceived. And if there be beings who hear this simile and are able to give rise to faith and understanding, know that this is rarer and more marvelous still.”

The Buddha said: “Jewel Hand! Just so, just so! It is as you have said! If there be a good man or a good woman who hears this simile and gives rise to faith, I confer upon that one a prediction: he will surely accomplish unsurpassed perfect awakening, and will gain the unsurpassed wisdom of a Tathāgata. Jewel Hand! Suppose again that a man were to grind into dust motes the vast buddha-lands spoken of above, as many as the dust motes of a thousand koṭis of buddha-lands, and with these dust motes, following the former simile, were to set them down one by one until they were used up, and so on to their being gathered into one buddha-land, and were then to grind that again into dust motes — and thus in due order, turn after turn, even to the passing of eighty turns; all the dust motes of all such vast buddha-lands the pure fleshly eye accomplished by the recompense of the bodhisattva’s karma is able within a single thought to see clearly, and it sees too buddhas as many as the dust motes of a hundred koṭis of vast buddha-lands, pure and bright as a crystal mirror, shining through worlds as many as the dust motes of ten buddha-lands. Jewel Hand! All of this is accomplished by the merit and roots of goodness of the most profound samādhi of the pure golden-net wheel-turning king.”

義疏Exposition

Beyond the Marks, Why Speak of a ‘Sign’ Besides

The bodily marks of the Buddha were exhausted in the preceding chapter — the ocean of marks of the ten bodies, each single mark with its own light shining through the Dharma realm. That being so, why does this chapter set up yet another thing called a secondary sign?

A secondary sign is a fine excellence that follows upon the great marks; reckoned by rank, it stands a degree below the marks. It is precisely upon that ‘degree below’ that Chengguan founds the reason for this chapter’s coming: marks and signs differ, yet both alike serve to adorn the Buddha’s body; but the signs depend upon the marks and their virtue is inferior to the marks, and so they are set forth after the marks — and just because they are inferior, when their working is once displayed it turns back and displays instead that the virtue of the great marks is hard to conceive. This is a way of speaking: to say a thing that is inconceivable, one begins not from the highest place but from the lowest — if even the lowest portion is like this, the highest may be surmised. So in reading this chapter, if one reads no further than ‘the Buddha’s signs are majestic,’ one has read past it; what the sūtra really asks you to reckon is a ratio.

Can One Light Really Save the Beings of the Hells

The sūtra gives that ratio in its opening breath. The Tathāgata says of himself: there is a secondary sign named Perfect Fullness King, from within which a great light goes forth named Blazing, with seven million asaṃkhyeyas of lights besides for its retinue — and this is one sign only. Then further down: within the mark of the thousand-spoked wheel beneath the bodhisattva’s feet there is a secondary sign, which ever sends forth forty kinds of light, and among them one named Pure Merit, able to shine through worlds as many as the dust motes of a koṭi of nayutas of buddha-lands. One light within one sign shines upon that many worlds.

Before the light of the Perfect Fullness King, the Tathāgata first speaks of a light belonging to the causal stage: “When I was still a bodhisattva, in the palace of the Tuṣita Heaven I sent forth a great light, named Light-Banner King, which shone through worlds as many as the dust motes of ten buddha-lands.” What it shone upon were the beings of the hells — “those who met this light had their manifold sufferings brought to rest, and obtained ten kinds of pure eye, and their ears, noses, tongues, bodies, and minds likewise; they all gave rise to joy and leapt up rejoicing, and when their lives there ended they were born in the Tuṣita Heaven.” Two things are to be watched in this passage. First, the owner of the light is still a bodhisattva and not yet a buddha: the light of the secondary signs of the fruition stage was already shining from the causal stage. Second, what is gained is first the ten kinds of purity in each of the six faculties, and only afterward the birth in heaven — first the organs of seeing and hearing are exchanged, and then the dwelling place.

What did this light do? “Those beings in the Avīci hell who undergo the utmost suffering, when they meet this light, all end their lives there and are born in the Tuṣita Heaven.” Do not read this as a stroke of luck. The sūtra itself supplies the condition: the light, “following upon the manifold deeds and the manifold desires and delights of beings, brings them all to ripeness” — it ripens, it does not substitute. The roots of goodness the beings already had were ripened by the light, and only then were their painful recompenses spent; and further on the sūtra says outright of those who obtain a station upon meeting the light that it is “by the power of the roots of goodness of his former practice.” The light is the condition, not the cause. If this portion is not kept distinct, the chapter becomes a tale of marvels; kept distinct, what it states is the principle of stimulus and response.

The One Who Expounds Is Not the Buddha but a Drum

And after the birth in heaven? The sūtra sets up a most singular expounder of the Dharma: “In that heaven there is a drum, named Most Delightful.” The drum sounds of itself, and tells these gods just come up out of the hells: it is because your minds were not heedless, because you planted roots of goodness in the presence of the Tathāgata and in former times drew near to a multitude of good friends, and because of the great awesome spiritual power of Vairocana, that your lives there ended and you came to be born in this heaven.

Why should a drum be made to speak, rather than the Buddha with his own mouth? First look at what the drum does. Its first utterance is not consolation but a statement of provenance handed to these gods: the pleasure you have today is no accident; it is the cause you yourself planted, together with the Buddha’s sustaining power. The illness gods are likeliest to fall into is to revel in pleasure and forget the cause; the drum, in its first words, points the cause out. Its second sounding goes a step further: the bodhisattva Vairocana has entered the samādhi of parting from defilement, and you should pay him homage — turning their eyes away from their own pleasure and toward a bodhisattva sitting in concentration.

“How Strange and Rare It Is! By What Cause Is So Subtle and Wondrous a Sound Sent Forth?”

The response of the sons of the gods is the starting point of the whole doctrine of this chapter: they gave rise to a doubt — a sound so subtle and wondrous as this, from where exactly is it sent forth?

The question is well asked. Had they merely listened in gratitude, the Dharma would have stopped at exhortation to goodness. Because they pressed after where the sound came from, the drum was able to open up the whole matter of ‘coming from.’ From here the sūtra enters its body: not first the principle and then the example, but the expounder taking himself for the example. This is the point most worth noting in the chapter’s manner — what can speak and what is spoken of are one and the same thing.

I Say “I,” and Yet Do Not Cling to a Self

The drum’s first answer is: the sound I send forth is accomplished by the power of the manifold roots of goodness. Then: “It is as when I say ‘I’ and yet do not cling to there being a self, nor cling to there being anything that belongs to a self; and all the buddhas are likewise — they say of themselves ‘I am the Buddha,’ and yet do not cling to a self, do not cling to what belongs to a self.”

This is first of all the untying of a ready difficulty. If there is no self, why does the Buddha say “I” everywhere? The answer: to say ‘I’ is a convenience of speech, to cling to a self is a grasping in the mind, and the two are not one thing. When a drum says “I,” everyone knows there is no drum there setting itself up as somebody; and the Buddha’s saying ‘I am the Buddha’ is a saying just of that kind. To understand no-self as ‘one may not say I’ is to reduce a doctrine to a rule of grammar. Brought down to daily use, this section comes to: there is no need to shrink from saying ‘I’; what is to be watched is whether, in the saying, a self is being set up in the mind.

Does the Sound Come from the East

Next comes the sentence that runs through this whole chapter: “It is as with my sound: it does not come from the east, nor does it come from the south, the west, the north, the four intermediate quarters, the zenith, or the nadir.” If the sound does not come from the ten quarters, then where does it come from? The drum does not say ‘from no cause’; it gives a positive answer: it is by the power of the roots of goodness of samādhi, and by the awesome power of prajñā-pāramitā, that a pure sound such as this is brought forth.

To have no place one comes from is not to have no cause. This is the chapter’s most guarded-against swerve. A man who hears ‘it does not come from the ten quarters’ slips easily into ‘then it is out of thin air, then it is random’; and the sūtra takes care to name the powers plainly. To have no place one comes from means that it is not a thing carried over from somewhere else, which might be intercepted on the road; it is the immediate arising, when the conditions are complete. The same principle is said over again with the palaces and instruments of pleasure of the Thirty-Three Gods: those instruments of pleasure too do not come from the ten quarters — they are what deeds have called forth, not goods fetched out of a storehouse.

That Hell-Body of Yours Has No Place It Came From Either

Then the drum turns this blade upon the hearers themselves: “It is as with your being in the hells in former times: that hell and that hell-body did not come from the ten quarters; it was only through your inverted evil deeds and the entanglement of delusion that a hell-body was born. That body has no root, and there is no place it comes from.”

This stroke falls very heavily. While it was sounds and instruments of pleasure, the hearers could still take it for a principle observed from the side; once it is ‘that hell-body you wore yesterday,’ there is no dodging. That the hells are really suffered the sūtra does not deny — what it denies is that there is a hell ready-made in some place, waiting for you. The hell is born from inverted evil deeds and the entanglement of delusion, and therefore it “has no root.” To have no root means that it has no substrate standing independent of conditions; and therefore, once the entanglement is loosened, it is gone. This is precisely the foreshadowing of the doctrine of repentance below — for if deeds had a root, repentance would have nothing to lay hold of.

The Five Desires Stand in Front of Mindfulness of the Buddha

The principle having been carried this far, the drum turns to admonition: you should go to that bodhisattva’s place to draw near and make offerings, and no longer be greedily attached to the instruments of the five desires, for “to be greedily attached to the pleasure of the five desires screens off the manifold roots of goodness.” Then a simile: “It is as when the fire at the end of the kalpa burns Sumeru: it burns it away utterly, so that nothing at all is left; and the entanglement of greed and desire about the mind is likewise — in the end the intention of mindfulness of the Buddha cannot arise.”

The force of the simile must be seen clearly. It does not say that greed makes mindfulness of the Buddha weaker; it says that while greed entangles the mind, the intention of mindfulness of the Buddha cannot be brought forth at all — as after the fire at the end of the kalpa nothing at all of Sumeru is left. This bears most sharply upon men just born into heaven: they are in the very midst of the finest enjoyment. The sūtra is not telling them to practice austerities; it is reminding them that a state of pleasure does not of itself injure a man — it is the being entangled that injures him.

To Know Kindness and Repay It Is Not a Matter of Courtesy

The drum says further: “You should know kindness and repay kindness,” and adds a heavy word: beings who do not know how to repay kindness for the most part meet with untimely death and are born in the hells.

This is easily read as a worldly homily upon gratitude. Set back into the chapter’s own context it is nothing of the kind: the whole situation of these gods was given them by another — a single light drew them up out of Avīci. To know kindness is to know truly upon what stretch of causes and conditions one is standing at this moment; not to know kindness is to take one’s recompense as something owed to one by nature, and so to fall back into heedlessness and make deeds anew. Hence the drum at once gives the concrete way of repaying: now you should quickly dedicate and direct what you have gained, and increase your roots of goodness. To repay kindness is not to return a gift; it is to turn over what one has received.

Neither Male nor Female, Neither Arising nor Ceasing

After the admonition the drum comes back to itself for a last simile: “It is as with me, this heavenly drum: I am neither male nor female, and yet I am able to bring forth measureless, boundless, inconceivable things” — and you sons of the gods and daughters of the gods are likewise, neither male nor female, and yet able to enjoy the manifold exquisite palaces and gardens. Then it presses one layer further: “And as with me, this heavenly drum, which neither arises nor ceases, so form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness are likewise, neither arising nor ceasing. If you are able to awaken and understand herein, know that this is to enter the samādhi of the seal of no reliance.”

From a drum’s having no sex to the aggregates’ neither arising nor ceasing, the joint in the middle lies in the words ‘no fixed substance’: the drum is neither male nor female, and yet it functions; the aggregates neither arise nor cease, and yet they undergo pain and pleasure. The concentration entered upon awakening here is named ‘the seal of no reliance’ — no reliance, precisely because there is no fixed substance to lean upon. This section closes the first half of the chapter: from the soundlessness of a place the sound comes from, all the way home to the aggregates having no place they come from.

The Bodhisattva Who Cannot Be Seen

The sons of the gods, having heard this, gained what they had never had before, and conjured up ten thousand clouds of flowers, ten thousand clouds of incense, ten thousand clouds of music, ten thousand clouds of banners, ten thousand clouds of canopies, and ten thousand clouds of songs of praise, and went together to the palace of the bodhisattva Vairocana — and yet they “wished to look up and behold him, and could not see him.” One son of the gods said: the bodhisattva has already passed away from here and been born among men in the house of King Śuddhodana. The sons of the gods looked with the heavenly eye, and sure enough saw him in the house of King Śuddhodana, with Brahmā and the gods of desire attending upon him and making offerings.

Thereupon a thought stirred in them: if we do not go to ask after his welfare, and if there be so much as a single thought of clinging attachment to this heavenly palace, that would be greatly unfitting — and this thought is their second advance: from seeking to see him, they turn to being alert to their own indulgence. Then the drum, sounding a fourth time, corrects their understanding of ‘seeing’: “The bodhisattva-mahāsattva did not end his life in this place and go to be born over there; it is only by the power of spiritual penetration that, according to what suits the minds of beings, he lets them see him.” It is not a removal of household, but a responsive manifestation. And the drum again takes itself for witness: I now am not what the eye is able to see, and yet I am able to give forth sound; the bodhisattva entering the samādhi of parting from defilement is likewise — not what the eye can see, and yet able to display his taking of birth in place after place.

Repenting and Removing the Four Obstructions: First Raise the Mind, Then Ask the Method

Next comes the proper instruction of this chapter. The drum teaches them: they should give rise to the mind of unsurpassed perfect awakening, purify and order their minds, abide in good deportment, and repent and remove all obstructions of karma, obstructions of afflictions, obstructions of recompense, and obstructions of views; and further, with bodies, heads, and tongues as many as the number of the beings of the whole Dharma realm, and with good deeds of body, speech, and mind as many as the number of the beings of the whole Dharma realm, repent and remove all obstructions and faults. Chengguan places his outline heading ‘contemplating the four obstructions altogether’ only at the later passage of the drum’s exposition; this passage simply sets out the four obstructions as the sūtra has them.

Note the order: first the raising of the mind of awakening, and afterward the speaking of repentance. Repentance not set upon the mind of awakening is only a seeking to be rid of calamity; set upon the mind of awakening, it becomes the clearing away of the obstructions on a road one has taken. And the phrase ‘bodies as many as the number of the beings of the whole Dharma realm’ is not a rhetorical exaggeration either — it stretches the quantity of the repentance until it answers to the quantity of the deeds that were done. The response of the sons of the gods is exactly the response this section should have: their minds greatly rejoiced, and they asked, “How is it that the bodhisattva-mahāsattva repents and removes all faults?” — what they ask for is a method.

Deeds Come to Rest upon the Mind, and Are Born Only of Inversion

The drum’s answer is the heart of the chapter: “The bodhisattva knows that the manifold deeds do not come from the east, nor come from the south, the west, the north, the four intermediate quarters, the zenith, or the nadir, but are gathered together in common and come to rest within the mind; they are born only of inversion, and have no place where they abide. The bodhisattva sees this with decisive clarity, and has no doubt.”

The three clauses are to be taken apart. First, deeds do not come from the ten quarters — they are not outward things. Second, they are gathered together in common and come to rest within the mind — they really are there, and they are upon the mind. Third, they are born only of inversion and have no place where they abide — their place of birth is inversion, not any real location. The three together are the entire reason why repentance is possible: were deeds outward things, repentance could not reach them; were deeds nothing at all, repentance would be unnecessary; because deeds are upon the mind and yet have no real place of abiding, they can be turned by the mind. The drum adds one more word to guard the border: it speaks of a self and of what belongs to a self, speaks of greed and anger and delusion and the manifold deeds, “and yet in truth there is no self, nor is there anything that belongs to a self,” and the deeds and their fruits of recompense, sought for throughout the ten quarters, are altogether not to be found.

Deeds Neither Arise nor Cease, and Yet There Is No Loss of Recompense

The misunderstanding likeliest to arise just here is: since there is no coming and going, is there then no recompense either? The drum stops it at once: “All the manifold deeds are likewise: neither arising nor ceasing, but only, according to whoever has cultivated and gathered them, does that one undergo their recompense.” And again: “If there were a coming and a going, one would fall into the view of annihilation and the view of permanence; the buddhas in the end do not expound a dharma that has annihilation or permanence, save as a skillful means for bringing beings to ripeness.”

This section cuts away both sides. To say deeds really come and go is to fall into the view of permanence; to say deeds are nothing at all is to fall into the view of annihilation; and the Buddha does not expound a dharma of annihilation or permanence. Neither arising nor ceasing, and yet no loss of recompense — this is the kind of deed that can be repented. So the repentance of this chapter is not a wiping away of sin; it is a seeing through of the inversion that sin has a substance of its own. Once the inversion is broken, the sin that was established upon the inversion has nothing left to cling to.

Did the Images in the Mirror Ever Come

To settle this principle in place, the drum raises the most famous simile of the chapter: there is a crystal mirror named Able to Shine, pure and reflecting through and through, exactly equal in measure to ten worlds; within measureless lands all the mountains and rivers and beings, and even the hells, the animals, and the hungry ghosts, all have their images appearing within it. Then it puts a question: “Can those reflected images be said to enter into the mirror and to go out from the mirror?” The sons of the gods answer: “They cannot.”

This one question and answer is one of the two places in the chapter where the hearers make the reply (the other is at the chapter’s end, where Jewel Hand answers “It cannot be conceived”), and its position is at the very summit of the doctrine. The images appear plainly, and yet have never entered and never gone out. All deeds are likewise: they are able to bring forth their fruits of recompense, and yet have no place they come from and no place they go to. Then the simile of the illusionist closes it off — the illusionist deludes the eyes of men, and the manifold deeds are the same; “if one is able to know in this way, this is true repentance, and all sins and evils are made pure.” Here the sūtra lays down a definition: true repentance is a kind of knowing, not a kind of transaction.

The Benefit of the Teaching: The Fruit of One Dharma Assembly

The Dharma spoken, the fruit appears. The sons of the Tuṣita gods within worlds as many as the dust motes of a hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of buddha-lands obtained the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas; measureless sons of the gods of the six heavens of desire gave rise to the mind of awakening; and all the daughters of the gods within the six heavens of desire forsook the body of a woman and gave rise to the intention set upon unsurpassed awakening.

Then comes a wider layer: because the sons of the gods had heard the vast dedication of Samantabhadra, because they had obtained the ten grounds, because they had gained the samādhi adorned with the manifold powers, and because with pure deeds of the three kinds as many as the number of beings they had repented and removed the heavy obstructions, they thereupon saw seven-jeweled lotus flowers as many as the dust motes of a hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of buddha-lands, upon each flower a bodhisattva seated cross-legged sending forth light, each single secondary sign of those bodhisattvas sending forth lights as many as the number of beings, and within the lights again buddhas as many as the number of beings, seated cross-legged and expounding the Dharma according to the minds of beings. And yet at the very height of this abundance the sūtra gathers it up in one clause: “and yet all of this did not yet display even a small part of the power of the samādhi of parting from defilement.” — seeing so much, and it does not reach a small part of that concentration. Every one of the great numbers in this chapter must come to rest upon this clause before it is read rightly.

The Clouds of Incense and the Number of the Afflictions

After the benefit comes the offering. The sons of the gods conjured within each and every pore of their bodies clouds of wondrous flowers as many as the number of beings, and made offering to Vairocana Tathāgata, scattering them upon the Buddha, and they all came to rest there; the clouds of incense rained down everywhere upon worlds as many as the dust motes of measureless buddha-lands. Of those whose bodies received that incense, “their bodies were at ease, as when a monk enters the fourth dhyāna, and all their obstructions of karma were melted away” — with the joy of a state of concentration as the measure, one may see that this incense is no worldly incense.

And what those who smelled it gained goes one layer deeper. Here the sūtra sets out the number of the afflictions: as regards form, sound, smell, taste, and touch, there are five hundred afflictions within and five hundred without; those in whom the practice of greed is much have twenty-one thousand, those in whom the practice of anger is much have twenty-one thousand, those in whom the practice of delusion is much have twenty-one thousand, and those in whom the three are in equal parts have twenty-one thousand. The four sorts together make eighty-four thousand. The sūtra does not tell a man to cut them off one by one; it says only, “they know that all of this is empty and false”; and having known it in this way, one accomplishes the roots of goodness of the pure light of the sovereign mastery of the cloud of incense-banners. Those who see the cloud of canopies plant roots of goodness as many as the sands of one Gaṅgā of a pure golden-net wheel-turning king. The numbers are set out so that a man may see that they are empty and false, not so that he may count them over and grow anxious.

The Pure Golden-Net Wheel-Turning King

The latter half of the chapter turns to the station of fruition. The bodhisattva abiding in this station of the wheel-turning king teaches and transforms beings within worlds as many as the dust motes of a hundred thousand koṭis of nayutas of buddha-lands. The sūtra speaks of the working of this station with two similes: one is the Tathāgata Moon Wisdom of the world Bright Mirror, to whom the fourfold assembly come by manifested bodies to hear the Dharma, and who expounds at length the affairs of his former births without ever an interval of a single thought, so that if there are beings who hear the name of that buddha they will surely be born in that land; the other is the first dhyāna — “It is as with one who has obtained the first dhyāna: though he has not yet ended his life, he already sees all the palaces in the place of Brahmā and is able to receive the ease and joy of the Brahmā world.”

Each simile has its own point. Moon Wisdom Tathāgata figures the benefit of hearing a name, and so what follows is: whoever for a moment meets the light of the golden-net wheel-turning king will surely obtain the station of the bodhisattva’s tenth ground. The first dhyāna figures a receiving beforehand of what one has not yet reached, and so one knows that the tenth ground gained upon meeting the light is a receiving in advance of the portion of that station, and not a leaping over of practice — the sūtra says plainly, “this is by the power of the roots of goodness of his former practice.” Abiding in this station he sends forth the pure light of the maṇi topknot, and those who meet it all obtain the station of the tenth ground, accomplish measureless light of wisdom, obtain ten kinds of pure eye and so on to ten kinds of pure mind, are furnished with measureless and most profound samādhis, and accomplish a pure fleshly eye.

Eighty Turns of Dust Motes, and That Fleshly Eye

In the last passage the Tathāgata sets a simile with his own mouth, and puts a question directly to Jewel Hand: crush a koṭi of nayutas of buddha-lands into dust motes, take one mote as one land and crush each of these into dust motes again; hold them in the left hand and go eastward, passing that many worlds of dust motes before setting down one mote, and so in all ten quarters; and let all the worlds, whether a mote was set upon them or not, be gathered together into one buddha-land. “Is such a buddha-land, vast and measureless, to be conceived?” Jewel Hand answers, “It cannot be conceived!” — and adds a word besides: if there be beings who hear this simile and are able to give rise to faith and understanding, that is rarer and more marvelous still.

The Buddha approves that word, and lays the weight upon ‘faith’: to one who hears this simile and gives rise to faith, “I confer upon that one a prediction: he will surely accomplish unsurpassed perfect awakening.” Why should faith carry such weight? Because this quantity has already passed beyond calculation, and to be able to believe it is for the measure of one’s mind to have become answerable to it. Thereupon the Tathāgata pushes the number to its furthest: grind the vast buddha-lands spoken of above, as many as the dust motes of a thousand koṭis of buddha-lands, into dust motes, set them down one by one following the former simile until they are used up, gather them into one land, and grind it into dust motes again, and so on turn after turn “even to the passing of eighty turns” — and all these dust motes “the pure fleshly eye accomplished by the recompense of the bodhisattva’s karma is able within a single thought to see clearly.”

What is to be watched is the words ‘fleshly eye.’ Not the heavenly eye, not the eye of wisdom, but the fleshly eye accomplished by the recompense of karma — only, because this recompense is pure, within a single thought it sees clearly the motes of eighty turns, and sees too buddhas as many as the dust motes of a hundred koṭis of vast buddha-lands, pure and bright as a crystal mirror, shining through worlds as many as the dust motes of ten buddha-lands. The crystal mirror appears here a second time: earlier it served to say that deeds have no coming and going, here it serves to say that the eye is bright and clean. The whole chapter is gathered up at last in one clause: all of this is accomplished by the merit and roots of goodness of the most profound samādhi of the pure golden-net wheel-turning king — from the beings of the hells meeting the light all the way to this place, the thread of cause and fruit has not once been broken.

Lineage

In the explanation of this chapter the ancient masters run in three tracks side by side. Chengguan founds his sense upon the substance and function of marks and signs, judging this chapter to be a working of inferior virtue that yet accomplishes an immediate benefit and turns back to display that the virtue of the great marks is hard to conceive; and at the chapter’s end he sets down that the differentiated causes and fruits are herewith finished, and that at the end of this chapter the scripture did not come down complete — taking this chapter as the gathering up of the differentiated causes and fruits, with the practice of Samantabhadra following after. Fazang, in his commentary upon the sixty-fascicle text, opens two further gates: first, settling the compass — since the thirty-two marks are adorned with eighty secondary signs, then each single one of the marks as many as the dust motes of ten lotus-treasuries has signs as many as dust motes; second, setting forth the working — making clear the working, when the Buddha was a bodhisattva, of the secondary sign at the lowest station of the wheel-mark, which sends forth one light so that the beings of the hells all obtain birth in heaven and accomplish the ten grounds and the ten kinds of eye. Li Tongxuan sets up no outline chapter by chapter, but in his own order of chapters lists this one as the ninth, and judges its sense to be that “he sends forth light within his hand, shining upon the sufferings of the evil destinies, making clear the light of the fullness of the path and of great compassion gathering in the worldly”; and further, in his explanation of the outline of the Chapter on Asaṃkhyeya, he cites expressly the method of repenting and removing spoken by the heavenly drum in this chapter, and takes these gods — who in the past cultivated the ten faiths, made evil deeds in the intermediate state and fell into the hells, were shone upon by the light and born in heaven, heard the heavenly drum expound the Dharma and at one time obtained the ten grounds and the samādhi of parting from defilement — as an instance of what he judges to be “obtaining the fruit of the ten grounds in three lives.” This is Li Tongxuan’s own judgment, and not what the text of this chapter says outright; his ascription is set down as such, without adjudication of which is higher.

As for the parallel translation: in the sixty-fascicle text this chapter is the Chapter on the Merit of the Light of the Lesser Marks of the Buddha, where ‘secondary sign’ appears as ‘lesser mark,’ and the opening is likewise the Buddha telling the bodhisattva Jewel Hand; in the closing passage the two witnesses take different grounds for their similes (the eighty-fascicle text having the dust motes carried through eighty turns, the sixty-fascicle text having the crystal pearl of a lamp-flame), while the structure of the scene is the same — both gathering up, with a quantity beyond conceiving, into the merit and roots of goodness of the samādhi of the station of the wheel-turning king. The two witnesses differ of themselves in fullness and brevity and in their systems of rendering; both are recorded without adjudication.

As to how this chapter is tied to the other chapters within the sūtra, the sūtra itself says it most clearly: the obtaining of the ten grounds by the sons of the gods is tied to their “hearing the vast dedication of Samantabhadra.” And the reason the passage on repentance has become the most often cited method of repenting and removing in the whole Avataṃsaka is likewise that it does not stop at ritual — it sets repentance upon the one insight that deeds have no place they come from, and so repentance becomes a matter of seeing, and not a matter of transaction.

考據Apparatus

本品之漢譯校本:實叉難陀 T279(底本·〈如來隨好光明功德品第三十五〉)· 佛馱跋陀羅 T278(晉譯六十華嚴·〈佛小相光明功德品第三十〉·卷三十二–三十三〔T09n0278 0605a04–0607a05〕)。

澄觀《華嚴經疏》T35n1735 ·《演義鈔》T36n1736(八十華嚴逐文·主)

法藏《探玄記》T35n1733(六十華嚴疏)

〔T35n1733 0400c15〕

李通玄《新華嚴經論》T36n1739(表法異軌)

This chapter carries on from the preceding Chapter on the Ocean of Marks of the Ten Bodies of the Tathāgata and distinguishes the 「好」 tr. “sign”: beyond the marks a secondary sign is separately set up, and the virtue of the sign is inferior to that of the marks, while its working accomplishes a great benefit all at once — from within one secondary sign beneath the feet, one light shines through worlds as many as the dust motes of a koṭi of nayutas of buddha-lands, and the beings of Avīci who undergo the utmost suffering, upon meeting it, at once end their lives there and are born in heaven. Having been born in heaven, a heavenly drum gives forth its sound and expounds the Dharma for them: the sound does not come from the ten quarters, the recompense of karma does not come from the ten quarters, and the hell-body too does not come from the ten quarters; the images within a crystal mirror neither enter nor go out, and therefore all deeds, though able to bring forth their fruits of recompense, have no place they come from and no place they go to — and to know this is true repentance. Chengguan judges this chapter to be 「劣德之用,用成頓益,翻顯大相德難思」 tr. “a working of inferior virtue, whose working accomplishes an immediate benefit, and which turns back to display that the virtue of the great marks is hard to conceive”, while Li Tongxuan takes the method of repenting and removing spoken by the heavenly drum in this chapter as his warrant for obtaining the ten grounds in three lives.

I. Doctrinal Outline and Placement

Outline systemThe place of this chapter within it
The base text T279, in thirty-nine chaptersChapter thirty-five, The Merit of the Light of the Secondary Signs of the Tathāgata (the seventh assembly, the second gathering in the Hall of Universal Light · from the end of fascicle forty-eight to the beginning of fascicle forty-nine 〔T10 0255c11–0257c02〕); the opening clause of the text proper is 「爾時,世尊告寶手菩薩言」 tr. “at that time the World-Honored One told the bodhisattva Jewel Hand, saying” 〔0255c13〕, and the closing clause 「…… “… accomplished by the merit and roots of goodness of the most profound samādhi” 〔0257c02〕
Chengguan, Huayan jing shuThe commentary upon the chapter opens three gates and then explains the text: the reason for its coming · the explanation of the name · the tenet and aim · the explanation of the text 〔T35n1735 0866c27 onward〕; at the chapter’s end he concludes 「差別因果竟。 “the differentiated causes and fruits are finished. At the end of this chapter the scripture did not come down complete” 〔0869c11〕
Chengguan, Yanyi chaoThe passage of the sub-commentary upon this chapter 〔T36n1736 0609c05 onward〕, answering to the section on the explanation of the name
Fazang, Tanxuan ji (the commentary upon the sixty-fascicle text)The Chapter on the Merit of the Light of the Lesser Marks of the Buddha, chapter thirty 〔T35n1733 0400c05–0403a13〕; he opens three gates — the explanation of the name, the reason for its coming, the tenet and aim
Li Tongxuan, Xin Huayan jing lunHe sets up no separate outline section chapter by chapter; in the general outline of the ten profound gates and the six characteristics he lists this chapter as the ninth 〔T36n1739 0876a16〕, and again, in his explanation of the outline of the Chapter on Asaṃkhyeya, he cites expressly the passage of the heavenly drum from this chapter 〔0871c01–0871c21〕
Vasubandhu, Shidi jing lun〔not found〕. That treatise explains the Chapter on the Ten Grounds alone, and does not answer to this chapter in structure; it is set down as lacking according to the fact, and nothing is drawn in by force

The reason for its coming — Chengguan ties this chapter to the preceding Chapter on the Ocean of Marks of the Ten Bodies of the Tathāgata:

tr. “First, the reason for its coming: the preceding chapter makes clear the marks, and this chapter distinguishes the signs. Marks and signs, though they differ, both serve to adorn the body, and thus answer the earlier questions upon the body and the eye and the rest, together with sovereign mastery. The signs depend upon the marks and their virtue is inferior to the marks, and so they are made clear next. A working of inferior virtue, whose working accomplishes an immediate benefit, turns back to display that the virtue of the great marks is hard to conceive.” 〔T35n1735 0866c28〕

The explanation of the name —

tr. “Second, the explanation of the name: ‘Tathāgata’ marks out the person and betokens the virtue, and ‘secondary signs’ and the rest display that the virtue rests upon the person. The secondary sign is the substance, following upon the great marks, because it adds to the comeliness of the form. ‘Light’ is the function, and ‘merit’ is the virtue — that is, from the sign light goes forth, and the light is able to benefit beings, and because it displays the virtue of the sign it is taken for the name. ‘The secondary signs of the Tathāgata,’ and also ‘the Tathāgata has secondary signs’ — both explanations run through it.” 〔T35n1735 0867a02〕

The tenet and aim — 「三宗趣者,明好勝德為宗,令物敬修為趣。」 tr. “Third, the tenet and aim: to make clear the excellent virtue of the signs is the tenet; to make beings revere and cultivate is the aim.” 〔T35n1735 0867a07〕

The great outline in explaining the text — 「次釋文,中二:先略、後廣。 tr. “Next, explaining the text, wherein there are two: first the summary, afterward the full. Within the summary there are two: first, marking out the signs of the fruition; second, from ‘Sons of the Buddha, when I was’ onward, raising the causal stage to set it over against them and display them.” 〔T35n1735 0867a09〕

The outline of the heavenly-drum passage (Chengguan, rank by rank · cited by the first words of each clause) — from 「時諸天子」 tr. “then the sons of the gods” onward, having heard, they give rise to doubt 〔T35n1735 0867b18〕; third, from 「是時天鼓」 tr. “at that time the heavenly drum” onward, the general showing 〔the same passage〕; from 「今者」 tr. “now” onward, the exhortation to go and increase goodness 〔0867c06〕; fifth, 「諸天子如我天鼓非男……」 tr. “sons of the gods, it is as with me, this heavenly drum, neither male …” 〔the same passage〕; from 「天子眾」 tr. “the host of the sons of the gods” onward, they raise the mind and wish to go, and fifth, from 「時天鼓中出聲告」 tr. “then from within the heavenly drum a sound came forth telling them” onward 〔0867c14〕; third, from 「爾時天鼓」 tr. “at that time the heavenly drum” onward, the right teaching according to the Dharma, and the right teaching of contemplating sin 〔0868b03〕; second, from 「諸天子如我天鼓」 tr. “sons of the gods, it is as with me, this heavenly drum” onward, contemplating the four obstructions altogether 〔0868b12〕.

II. Terminology

TermSanskrit as transmitted by the ancient masters (romanized · an aid to pronunciation)What is attestedEssential sense
Secondary sign— (the transcription is wanting; the sixty-fascicle text renders it 「小相」 tr. “lesser mark”)This chapter’s 「如來、應、正等覺有隨好,名:圓滿王」 tr. “the Tathāgata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Awakened One has a secondary sign, named Perfect Fullness King” 〔T10n0279 0255c13〕A fine excellence that follows upon the great marks; Chengguan says 「隨好是體,隨逐大相,益姿好故」 tr. “the secondary sign is the substance, following upon the great marks, because it adds to the comeliness of the form” 〔T35n1735 0867a03〕

III. Similes and Rhetoric

(1) The simile of the heavenly drum (the chief simile of this chapter, in three faces) — 「如我說我,而不著我,不著我所」 tr. “it is as when I say ‘I’ and yet do not cling to a self, nor cling to what belongs to a self”, 「如我音聲不從東方來,不從南西北方、四維上下來」 tr. “it is as with my sound, which does not come from the east, nor come from the south, the west, the north, the four intermediate quarters, the zenith, or the nadir” 〔T10n0279 0256a04・0256a07〕; 「如我天鼓,非男非女,而能出生無量無邊不思議事」 tr. “it is as with me, this heavenly drum, neither male nor female, and yet able to bring forth measureless, boundless, inconceivable things” 〔0256b04〕:

  • The ground of the simile: the heavenly drum declaring for itself the nature of its own sound.
  • The body of the simile: the buddhas say of themselves that they are buddhas and yet do not cling to a self · the becoming of a buddha through the recompense of karma does not come from the ten quarters · the sons and daughters of the gods are neither male nor female and yet enjoy palaces and gardens.
  • The sense displayed: the speaker is the ground of the simile, and to expound the Dharma is to expound himself — herein lies what is singular in this chapter: the heavenly drum that can speak takes its own self for the simile, and therefore what it says of having no place to come from is, in that very moment, verified in itself.

(2) The simile of the hell-body — 「譬如汝等昔在地獄,地獄及身非十方來,但由於汝顛倒惡業愚癡纏縛,生地獄身,此無根本、無有來處」 tr. “it is as with your being in the hells in former times: that hell and that body did not come from the ten quarters; it was only through your inverted evil deeds and the entanglement of delusion that a hell-body was born, and this body has no root and no place it comes from” 〔T10n0279 0256a09〕: the sense displayed: the hearers’ own past experience is taken for the ground of the simile, so as to prove that 「無根本、無有來處」 tr. “no root and no place it comes from” is no abstruse talk.

(3) The simile of the palaces and instruments of pleasure of Sumeru — 「譬如須彌山王有三十三天上妙宮殿種種樂具,而此樂具非十方來」 tr. “it is as with the exquisite palaces and manifold instruments of pleasure of the Thirty-Three Gods upon Sumeru, king of mountains: those instruments of pleasure do not come from the ten quarters” 〔0256a16〕: the sense displayed: the surroundings called forth by the recompense of karma appear, and yet have no place they come from.

(4) The simile of the kalpa-fire burning Sumeru — 「譬如劫火燒須彌山,悉令除盡,無餘可得;貪欲纏心亦復如是,終不能生念佛之意」 tr. “it is as when the fire at the end of the kalpa burns Sumeru, causing it to be wholly done away with so that nothing at all is left; the entanglement of greed and desire about the mind is likewise — in the end the intention of mindfulness of the Buddha cannot arise” 〔0256a27〕: the sense displayed: greed and desire are to the mind of mindfulness of the Buddha as the kalpa-fire is to Sumeru — it does not diminish it but exhausts it.

(5) The simile of the crystal mirror — 「如有玻瓈鏡,名為:能照,清淨鑒徹,與十世界其量正等…… “suppose there were a crystal mirror, named Able to Shine, pure and reflecting through and through, exactly equal in measure to ten worlds … can those reflected images be said to enter into the mirror and to go out from the mirror?” 〔0256c21〕:

  • The ground of the simile: the images within the mirror neither enter from without nor go out from the mirror.
  • The body of the simile: all deeds, though able to bring forth the fruits of recompense of karma, have no place they come from and no place they go to.
  • The sense displayed: the ground of repentance — because deeds have no coming and going, they can be repented; because deeds are not annihilated, they must be repented.

(6) The simile of the illusionist — 「譬如幻師幻惑人眼,當知諸業亦復如是。 “it is as when an illusionist deludes the eyes of men: know that the manifold deeds are likewise. If one knows in this way, this is true repentance” 〔0256c28〕: the sense displayed: with illusion the foregoing similes are gathered up, and the whole comes home to the definition of 「真實懺悔」 tr. “true repentance”.

(7) The simile of a monk entering the fourth dhyāna — 「若有眾生身蒙香者,其身安樂,譬如比丘入第四禪,一切業障皆得銷滅」 tr. “if there are beings whose bodies receive that incense, their bodies are at ease, as when a monk enters the fourth dhyāna, and all obstructions of karma are melted away” 〔0257a16〕: the sense displayed: the benefit of the clouds of incense is measured by the joy of a state of concentration.

(8) The simile of the Tathāgata Moon Wisdom of the world Bright Mirror — 「譬如明鏡世界月智如來,常有無量諸世界中比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷等化現其身而來聽法」 tr. “it is as with the Tathāgata Moon Wisdom of the world Bright Mirror: there are ever monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen from measureless worlds who manifest their bodies and come to hear the Dharma” 〔0257a26〕: the sense displayed: that hearing the name assures birth in that land figures how meeting the light of the golden-net wheel-turning king assures the tenth ground.

(9) The simile of seeing the Brahmā palaces upon the first dhyāna — 「如得初禪,雖未命終,見梵天處所有宮殿而得受於梵世安樂」 tr. “it is as with one who has obtained the first dhyāna: though he has not yet ended his life, he sees all the palaces in the place of Brahmā and is able to receive the ease and joy of the Brahmā world” 〔T10n0279 0257b04〕: the sense displayed: not yet arrived and yet already receiving its joy — figuring how one who meets the light has not yet arrived at the tenth ground and yet already obtains the portion of that station.

(10) The simile of the dust motes and the eighty turns — 「假使有人以億那由他佛剎碎為微塵…… “suppose a man were to crush a koṭi of nayutas of buddha-lands into dust motes … and thus in due order, turn after turn, even to the passing of eighty turns” 〔0257b10・0257b25〕: the sense displayed: by a number beyond all reckoning is displayed the compass of what the pure fleshly eye sees clearly within a single thought.

IV. Collation with Parallel Translations

The Chinese witnesses for this chapter: Śikṣānanda, T279 (the base text · the Chapter on the Merit of the Light of the Secondary Signs of the Tathāgata, chapter thirty-five) · Buddhabhadra, T278 (the Jin rendering of the sixty-fascicle text · the Chapter on the Merit of the Light of the Lesser Marks of the Buddha, chapter thirty · fascicles thirty-two and thirty-three 〔T09n0278 0605a04–0607a05〕). The forty-fascicle T293 has only the Chapter on Entering the Inconceivable Realm of Liberation, the Practices and Vows of Samantabhadra, and has no parallel rendering of this chapter; it is set down as lacking according to the fact.

Passage One The Chapter Title and the Opening

WitnessVerbatim, renderedLocation
Śikṣānanda T279At that time the World-Honored One told the bodhisattva Jewel Hand, sayingT10n0279 0255c13
Buddhabhadra T278At that time the Buddha told the bodhisattva Jewel Hand, sayingT09n0278 0605a06

What the variants are tied to: (a) The chapter title in the eighty-fascicle text is 「如來隨好光明功德品」 tr. “the Chapter on the Merit of the Light of the Secondary Signs of the Tathāgata”, and in the sixty-fascicle text 「佛小相光明功德品」 tr. “the Chapter on the Merit of the Light of the Lesser Marks of the Buddha” — 「隨好」 tr. “secondary sign” against 「小相」 tr. “lesser mark”, both pointing to the fine excellences that lie beyond the marks; a difference of the systems of rendering. (b) In the opening clause the eighty-fascicle text has 「世尊」 tr. “the World-Honored One” and the sixty-fascicle text 「佛」 tr. “the Buddha”; the one addressed in the asking of the Dharma is in both the bodhisattva Jewel Hand. (c) The titles of the Tathāgata in the eighty-fascicle text are 「如來、應、正等覺」 tr. “the Tathāgata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Awakened One”, and in the sixty-fascicle text 「如來、應供、等正覺」 tr. “the Tathāgata, the One Worthy of Offerings, the Rightly and Perfectly Awakened One” 〔T09n0278 0605a06〕.

Passage Two The Cross-Witness Alignment of the Heavenly-Drum Passage (a note upon method)

In the eighty-fascicle text, from 「天中有鼓,名:甚可愛樂」 tr. “in that heaven there is a drum, named Most Delightful” 〔T10n0279 0255c20〕 to 「一切罪惡悉得清淨」 tr. “and all sins and evils are made pure” 〔0256c29〕 stands the whole exposition of the heavenly drum, sounding five times. Within the compass of this chapter in the sixty-fascicle text the word 「鼓」 tr. “drum” yields zero hits (a search of the interval 0605a04–0607a05).

This zero of hits belongs to the difference of the rendering-terms, and does not constitute evidence that ‘the sixty-fascicle text lacks this scene’. Cross-witness alignment is in every case taken by the structure of the scene — who speaks · to whom · what is asked · upon what it rests · what is gained: within this chapter the sixty-fascicle text likewise has the Tathāgata telling Jewel Hand, a sound within the Tuṣita Heaven telling the sons of the gods, and the sons of the gods gaining benefit upon hearing it; only the rendering-term 「天鼓」 tr. “heavenly drum” is not set up (the sixty-fascicle text puts it as words of a sound within the heaven). To search the sixty-fascicle text with the words of the eighty-fascicle text must yield a false zero, and this is a criterion already established in this edition (in a cross-witness negative proposition it is forbidden to search one witness with the words of another). This section therefore records only the alignment of the two witnesses by the structure of the scene, and makes no judgment of presence or absence.

Passage Three The Chapter’s Closing Return

WitnessThe structure of the sceneLocation
Śikṣānanda T279The simile of the dust motes carried through eighty turns → the pure fleshly eye seeing clearly within a single thought → the closing return to 「清淨金網轉輪王甚深三昧福德善根之所成就」 tr. “accomplished by the merit and roots of goodness of the most profound samādhi of the pure golden-net wheel-turning king”T10n0279 0257b09–0257c02
Buddhabhadra T278The simile of 「譬如錠光玻瓈珠」 tr. “it is as with a crystal pearl of lamp-light” → the closing return to the roots of goodness of the wheel-turning kingT09n0278 0606c23

What the variants are tied to: the two witnesses take different grounds for the simile in the closing passage (the eighty-fascicle text the dust motes carried through eighty turns, the sixty-fascicle text the crystal pearl of lamp-light), while the structure of the scene is the same (both, with a quantity hard to conceive, come home to the merit and roots of goodness of the samādhi of the station of the wheel-turning king). Recorded in full without adjudication.

V. Scriptural Grounds of Sectarian Doctrine (the doctrinal eye)

(1) An immediate benefit from an inferior virtue — the eye of this chapter lies in the 「好」 tr. “sign”, whose virtue, though inferior to that of the marks, has a working that accomplishes a great benefit all at once: among the forty lights of the secondary sign of the thousand-spoked wheel beneath the feet there is 「有一光,名:清淨功德,能照億那由他佛剎微塵數世界」 tr. “one light, named Pure Merit, able to shine through worlds as many as the dust motes of a koṭi of nayutas of buddha-lands” 〔T10n0279 0255c25〕, and 「阿鼻地獄極苦眾生,遇斯光者,皆悉命終生兜率天」 tr. “those beings in the Avīci hell who undergo the utmost suffering, upon meeting this light, all end their lives there and are born in the Tuṣita Heaven” 〔0255c28〕; and so on to 「若有眾生遇斯光者,皆得菩薩第十地位」 tr. “if there are beings who meet this light, they all obtain the station of the bodhisattva’s tenth ground” 〔0257b07〕. Chengguan judges its sense outright: 「劣德之用,用成頓益,翻顯大相德難思矣。」 tr. “a working of inferior virtue, whose working accomplishes an immediate benefit, turns back to display that the virtue of the great marks is hard to conceive.” 〔T35n1735 0867a01〕

(2) Not coming from the ten quarters (the principle that runs throughout) — this chapter runs 「非十方來」 tr. “it does not come from the ten quarters” through five things: the sound of the heavenly drum 〔0256a06〕・the becoming of a buddha through the recompense of karma 〔0256a06〕・the hell and the body 〔0256a08〕・the light sent forth by the awesome virtue of the bodhisattva 〔0256a14, the passage〕・the palaces and instruments of pleasure of the Thirty-Three Gods 〔0256a14〕. And the powers upon which it rests are marked out positively: 「但以三昧善根力故,般若波羅蜜威德力故,出生如是清淨音聲」 tr. “it is only by the power of the roots of goodness of samādhi, and by the awesome power of prajñā-pāramitā, that a pure sound such as this is brought forth” 〔0256a14, the passage〕 — having no place it comes from is not being without a cause; the cause lies in the roots of goodness of samādhi and in prajñā.

(3) The definition of true repentance — 「菩薩知諸業不從東方來,不從南西北方、四維上下來,而共積集,止住於心;但從顛倒生,無有住處」 tr. “the bodhisattva knows that the manifold deeds do not come from the east, nor come from the south, the west, the north, the four intermediate quarters, the zenith, or the nadir, but are gathered together in common and come to rest within the mind; they are born only of inversion and have no place where they abide” 〔T10n0279 0256c05〕; 「諸所作業、六趣果報,十方推求悉不可得」 tr. “the manifold deeds that are done and the fruits of recompense in the six destinies, sought for throughout the ten quarters, are altogether not to be found” 〔0256c11〕; the images in the crystal mirror neither enter nor go out, and 「一切諸業亦復如是,雖能出生諸業果報,無來去處」 tr. “all the manifold deeds are likewise: though able to bring forth the fruits of recompense of karma, they have no place they come from and no place they go to” 〔0256c26〕; and the conclusion, 「若如是知,是真實懺悔,一切罪惡悉得清淨」 tr. “if one knows in this way, this is true repentance, and all sins and evils are made pure” 〔0256c29〕. What is repented are the four obstructions: 「悔除一切業障、煩惱障、報障、見障」 tr. “repent and remove all obstructions of karma, obstructions of afflictions, obstructions of recompense, and obstructions of views” 〔0256b27〕, and the form this takes is 「以盡法界眾生數等身…… “with bodies as many as the number of the beings of the whole Dharma realm … good deeds of body, good deeds of speech, and good deeds of mind, repent and remove all the manifold obstructions and faults” 〔0256b28〕.

(4) Deeds are neither annihilated nor permanent — 「一切諸業亦復如是,非生非滅,隨有修集則受其報」 tr. “all the manifold deeds are likewise: neither arising nor ceasing, and according to whoever has cultivated and gathered them, that one undergoes their recompense” 〔0256c14〕; 「若有去來則有斷常,一切諸佛終不演說有斷常法,除為方便成熟眾生」 tr. “if there were a going and a coming, there would be annihilation and permanence; the buddhas in the end do not expound a dharma that has annihilation or permanence, save as a skillful means for bringing beings to ripeness” 〔0256c17〕 — no coming and going, and yet no loss of recompense: this is the guarded border of this chapter’s doctrine of repentance.

(5) The aggregates neither arise nor cease, and the samādhi of the seal of no reliance — 「如我天鼓不生不滅,色、受、想、行、識亦復如是不生不滅。 “as with me, this heavenly drum, which neither arises nor ceases, so form, feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness likewise neither arise nor cease. If you are able to awaken and understand herein, know that this is to enter the samādhi of the seal of no reliance” 〔T10n0279 0256b07〕 — from the soundlessness of any place the sound comes from, this chapter points directly to the neither arising nor ceasing of the five aggregates, and gathers it up with the name of a concentration.

(6) The immediate obtaining of a station of fruition — when this Dharma was spoken, the sons of the Tuṣita gods 「得無生法忍」 tr. “obtained the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas” 〔0257a02〕, the sons of the gods of the six heavens of desire gave rise to the mind of awakening, and the daughters of the gods 「皆捨女身,發於無上菩提之意」 tr. “all forsook the body of a woman and gave rise to the intention set upon unsurpassed awakening” 〔0257a04〕; and having heard the vast dedication of Samantabhadra, 「得十地故,獲諸力莊嚴三昧故,以眾生數等清淨三業悔除一切諸重障故」 tr. “because they obtained the ten grounds, because they gained the samādhi adorned with the manifold powers, and because with pure deeds of the three kinds as many as the number of beings they repented and removed all the heavy obstructions” 〔0257a06〕, they thereupon saw the seven-jeweled lotus flowers, the bodhisattvas’ secondary signs sending forth light, and buddhas within the light expounding the Dharma — 「而猶未現離垢三昧少分之力」 tr. “and yet the power of the samādhi of parting from defilement was not displayed even in small part” 〔0257a12〕 — what appears, vast as it is, does not yet reach a small part of that concentration; this clause is the utmost of the measures taken in this chapter.

(7) The number of the eighty-four thousand afflictions — 「其內具有五百煩惱,其外亦有五百煩惱,貪行多者二萬一千,瞋行多者二萬一千,癡行多者二萬一千,等分行者二萬一千,了知如是悉是虛妄」 tr. “within them there are five hundred afflictions, and without them there are five hundred afflictions as well; those in whom the practice of greed is much have twenty-one thousand, those in whom the practice of anger is much have twenty-one thousand, those in whom the practice of delusion is much have twenty-one thousand, and those in whom the three are in equal parts have twenty-one thousand; and they know that all of this is empty and false” 〔0257a19〕 — the four sorts at twenty-one thousand each, eighty-four thousand in all; and what the text of the sūtra enjoins is only 「了知如是悉是虛妄」 tr. “to know that all of this is empty and false”, and having known it, one accomplishes the 「香幢雲自在光明清淨善根」 tr. “roots of goodness of the pure light of the sovereign mastery of the cloud of incense-banners”.

VI. Divergent Interpretations of the Commentators (the ancient masters · with their tenets marked)

Chengguan, Huayan jing shu T35n1735 · Yanyi chao T36n1736 (following the text of the eighty-fascicle recension · the principal commentary)

The three gates that open his tenet are as recorded under section I: the reason for its coming is tied to the preceding chapter’s making clear the marks and this chapter’s distinguishing the signs 〔0866c27〕; the explanation of the name divides substance, function, and virtue in three senses, and allows both 「如來之隨好」 tr. “the secondary signs of the Tathāgata” and 「如來有隨好」 tr. “the Tathāgata has secondary signs” as two explanations running through it 〔0867a06〕; the tenet and aim, 「明好勝德為宗,令物敬修為趣」 tr. “to make clear the excellent virtue of the signs is the tenet, to make beings revere and cultivate is the aim” 〔0867a07〕. In explaining the text, the summary comes first and the full afterward, and within the summary the signs of the fruition are marked out first, and next, from 「佛子我為」 tr. “Sons of the Buddha, when I was” onward, the causal stage is raised and set over against them 〔0867a09〕.

Chengguan’s outline of the heavenly-drum passage: first, 「聞已生疑」 tr. “having heard, they give rise to doubt” 〔0867b18〕; afterward, from 「諸天子」 tr. “sons of the gods” onward, the exhortation is explained, 「於中有六」 tr. “wherein there are six” 〔T35n1735 0867c03〕 — the exhortation to go and increase goodness 〔0867c06〕・raising the mind and wishing to go 〔0867c14〕・the right teaching according to the Dharma・the right teaching of contemplating sin 〔0868b03〕・contemplating the four obstructions altogether 〔0868b12〕, and the rest, which are not a level series of one rank. At the chapter’s end he concludes: 「差別因果竟。 tr. “the differentiated causes and fruits are finished. At the end of this chapter the scripture did not come down complete.” 〔T35n1735 0869c11〕 The Chao opens this at the place of the explanation of the name: 「疏「二釋名」,中二:先辨得名」 tr. “in the commentary’s ‘second, the explanation of the name,’ there are two: first, distinguishing how the name is had” 〔T36n1736 0609c05〕.

Fazang, Tanxuan ji T35n1733 (the commentary upon the sixty-fascicle text)

The three gates of the explanation of the name, the reason for its coming, and the tenet and aim:

tr. “‘Buddha’ marks out the person and betokens the virtue; ‘lesser marks’ sets them beside the great and distinguishes their substance; ‘light’ is the function raised upon the substance; ‘merit’ is the benefit accomplished by the function. Thus the virtue is displayed upon the person, and substance and function make the name. Second, the reason for its coming: in the preceding chapter the great marks each had their light and all shone upon the Dharma realm, but the aspect of the benefit conferred by that shining was not yet displayed, and so this chapter now makes plain the matter of the benefit. Because the great marks are hard to make clear, the lesser marks are distinguished; and the lesser marks being many, only one mark is discussed; and one mark having benefits at many times, only one time is spoken of; and this benefit of one time being again hard to make clear, the Buddha therefore speaks of it himself.” 〔T35n1733 0400c06〕

The two gates of the tenet and aim:

tr. “Third, the tenet and aim: the tenet makes clear the beneficial working of the Tathāgata’s virtue of marks. It is opened summarily in two gates. First, settling the compass: since the thirty-two marks are adorned with eighty secondary signs, one knows that each single one of the marks as many as the dust motes of ten lotus-treasuries has signs as many as dust motes. … Second, setting forth the working: the eighty secondary signs merely adorn the form so that beings give rise to pure faith. Here now the lesser marks are made clear — the working, when the Buddha was a bodhisattva, of the secondary sign of the wheel-mark at the lowest of its stations: that is, it sends forth one light shining upon lands as many as the dust motes of ten worlds, and the beings of the hells all obtain birth in heaven and accomplish the ten grounds and the ten kinds of eye and ear and the rest. And the fragrance of the pores of these sons of the gods perfumes beings everywhere, and they too obtain the ten grounds and become white and pure wheel-turning kings. And again this wheel-turning king sends forth light, and causes measureless beings again to obtain the ten grounds and the ten kinds of eye and the rest.” 〔T35n1733 0400c15〕

Li Tongxuan, Xin Huayan jing lun T36n1739 (a differing track of betokening the Dharma)

The place of this chapter in Li Tongxuan’s own order of chapters:

tr. “Ninth, the Chapter on the Merit of the Light of the Secondary Signs: he sends forth light within his hand, shining upon the sufferings of the evil destinies — this makes clear the light of the fullness of the path and of great compassion gathering in the worldly.” 〔T36n1739 0876a16〕

Taking the method of repenting and removing spoken by the heavenly drum in this chapter as the warrant for obtaining the ten grounds in three lives:

tr. “This merit is not hard to obtain at once, as with the method of repenting and removing spoken by the heavenly drum in the Chapter on the Merit of the Light of the Secondary Signs: with good bodies, mouths, minds, and tongues as many as the number of the beings of the whole Dharma realm, one repents and removes all obstructions of karma. The gods asked: ‘How does one repent and remove?’ The heavenly drum said: ‘Contemplate that deeds do not come from the east, west, south, north, the four intermediate quarters, the zenith, or the nadir, but are gathered together in common upon body and mind, and, seeking them throughout the ten quarters, they are altogether not to be found.’ And so on at length, as in the sūtra.” 〔T36n1739 0871c03〕

tr. “The sons of the gods spoken of above are in every case those who in the past cultivated the deeds of the ten excellent understandings within the ten faiths; because in the intermediate state they made evil deeds they fell into the hells, and being shone upon in body by the light of Vairocana they obtained birth in the Tuṣita Heaven, and there had the heavenly drum expound the Dharma, and at one time obtained the ten grounds and the samādhi of parting from defilement. This is obtaining the fruit of the ten grounds in three lives. If one has faith and understanding and makes no evil deeds, one becomes a buddha in one life, as Sudhana did.” 〔T36n1739 0871c10〕

Recorded without adjudication: Chengguan explains this chapter by the sense of substance and function in marks and signs, judging it an immediate benefit from an inferior virtue that turns back to display that the great marks are hard to conceive (the gate of doctrinal sense); Fazang opens the two gates of compass and working, settling the quantity by each of the dust-mote-many marks having dust-mote-many signs (the gate of compass); Li Tongxuan sets up no outline chapter by chapter, but takes the heavenly drum’s method of repenting and removing into his own judgment of becoming a buddha in three lives (the gate of betokening the Dharma) — three tracks running side by side, all of them settled sayings of the ancient masters; they are recorded, and no judgment is made of which is higher.

VII. Cross-Reading and Lineage

  • This chapter and the preceding one: the Chapter on the Ocean of Marks of the Ten Bodies of the Tathāgata makes clear the marks and this chapter distinguishes the signs, and Chengguan ties the two chapters together as a pair of marks and signs 〔T35n1735 0866c27〕; this chapter’s judgment that 「好依相有,德劣於相」 tr. “the signs depend upon the marks, and their virtue is inferior to the marks” 〔0866c29〕 must be looked at together with the preceding chapter before the sense of 「翻顯」 tr. “turning back to display” is seen.
  • This chapter and the Chapter on the Practice of Samantabhadra: the text of this chapter ties it itself — 「諸天子聞說普賢廣大迴向,得十地故」 tr. “because the sons of the gods heard the vast dedication of Samantabhadra spoken, they obtained the ten grounds” 〔T10n0279 0257a05〕, the power of the dedication being the cause of obtaining the ten grounds; and Chengguan says at the chapter’s end 「差別因果竟。 “the differentiated causes and fruits are finished. At the end of this chapter the scripture did not come down complete” 〔T35n1735 0869c11〕, making clear that this chapter is the gathering up of the differentiated causes and fruits, with the practice of Samantabhadra joining on below.
  • This chapter and the Chapter on Asaṃkhyeya: in his explanation of the outline of the Chapter on Asaṃkhyeya, Li Tongxuan cites expressly the heavenly-drum passage on repenting and removing from this chapter as his warrant for obtaining the ten grounds in three lives 〔T36n1739 0871c03〕 — this is Li Tongxuan’s own judgment and not what the text of this chapter says outright; his ascription is set down as such.
  • The guiding outlines of the Huayan house: a check of the Wujiao zhang T45n1866 · the Shi xuan men T45n1868 · the Fajie xuanjing T45n1883 finds 「天鼓」 tr. “heavenly drum” and 「隨好光明」 tr. “the light of the secondary signs” alike yielding zero hits 〔not found〕. These three books do not take this chapter as a scriptural ground for their guiding outlines; it is set down according to the fact, and nothing is tied on by force.
  • Vasubandhu’s Shidi jing lun T26n1522: 〔not found〕. That treatise explains the Chapter on the Ten Grounds alone, and does not answer to this chapter in structure. Though this chapter repeatedly says 「得菩薩第十地位」 tr. “obtaining the station of the bodhisattva’s tenth ground” 〔T10n0279 0257b08〕, what it makes clear is a benefit obtained all at once upon meeting the light, and not an explanation of the graded aspects of practice of the ten grounds; that treatise is therefore not used to force an explanation of this text.
