心要Essence

Sudhana asked about the path, and this elder answered not one word of doctrine.

He took Sudhana by the hand, brought him home, and said: “Son of good family! Just look at my house.”

That house had ten storeys and eight gates. Sudhana looked up through it one storey at a time: food given, garments given, ornaments given, attendant women and jewels given; and higher up, bodhisattvas expounding the Dharma, fifteen gates of wisdom, the forbearance of the echo, one voice pervading the lands, one more birth to come; and on the topmost storey, all the tathāgatas filling it.

When he had seen it all, Sudhana asked only one thing: “By what conditions was so pure an assembly brought about?”

The answer: beyond as many kalpas as there are dust-motes in a buddha-land, a buddha entered the city, and I made music sound, and I burned one pellet of incense.

One pellet of incense; ten storeys. Between them stand four graphs only — “the dedicating to three places.”

At the end the elder says: “I know only this bodhisattva liberation gate of the treasury of measureless merit.”

The ten-storeyed house was piled up storey by storey, with discrimination; those bodhisattvas he points to are ‘furnished with all dharmas without discrimination.’

It is harder for a man to say which storey he is standing on than to say he has reached the top.

Let it stand here for now.

白話Plain reading

Calling to Mind the Teaching of the Previous Friend: Merit in Ten Layers

At that time Sudhana the youth, having heard this gate of liberation from the householder Bright Wisdom, roamed at ease in that ocean of merit, tilled and worked that field of merit, gazed up at that mountain of merit, went toward that ford of merit, opened that treasury of merit, contemplated that Dharma of merit, purified that wheel of merit, savored that accumulation of merit, brought forth that strength of merit, and increased that force of merit.

Going in Search by Stages: Toward the City of the Lion

He traveled on gradually toward the city of the Lion, searching everywhere for the elder Jewel Topknot. He saw this elder right in the middle of the market, and he went to him at once, bowed to the elder’s feet, circumambulated him numberless times, joined his palms, stood, and said to the elder:

“Holy one! I have already raised the mind of anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi (the mind of unsurpassed, right, and universal awakening), but I do not yet know how a bodhisattva is to study the bodhisattva practice, or how he is to cultivate the bodhisattva path. It would be good, holy one, if you would expound for me the paths of the bodhisattvas — I would ride upon this path and go toward omniscience!”

Taking Him by the Hand and Leading Him On: Just Look at My House

At that time the elder took Sudhana by the hand and led him to where he lived, showing him his house, and said:

“Son of good family! Just look at my house.”

The House as a Whole: Ten Storeys and Eight Gates

At that time Sudhana saw that house of his, pure and full of light, made of true gold, with silver for its walls, crystal (a jewel like rock crystal) for its halls, and the deep-blue beryl jewel for its storeyed pavilions, while the exquisite jewel giant-clam formed its pillars, and a hundred thousand kinds of jewels adorned it everywhere; red-pearl maṇi formed the lion seat; maṇi formed the curtains, and true pearls formed the netting that spread and covered it over; a jeweled pool of agate was brimming with scented water, and measureless jeweled trees stood ranked all around. His house was broad and spacious, with ten storeys and eight gates.

The First Storey: The Lowest, Where Food and Drink Are Given

Sudhana went inside and observed one storey after another in order. He saw that the lowest storey was the giving of every kind of food and drink.

The Second Storey: The Giving of Jeweled Garments

He saw that the second storey was the giving of every kind of jeweled garment.

The Third Storey: The Giving of All Jeweled Ornaments

He saw that the third storey was the giving of all jeweled ornaments.

The Fourth Storey: The Giving of Attendant Women and the Finest Jewels

He saw that the fourth storey was the giving of every kind of attendant woman (the women who wait upon and serve within a household), and of all the finest and most exquisite jewels.

The Fifth Storey: Bodhisattvas of the Fifth Ground Gathered Like Clouds, Expounding the Dharma

He saw that on the fifth storey there were even bodhisattvas of the fifth ground gathered there like clouds, expounding every kind of Dharma for the benefit of the world, having brought to accomplishment all the gates of dhāraṇī (the gates that hold all dharmas together and do not let them be lost), every kind of seal of samādhi (samādhi being the mind gathered upon a single object without scattering, and what such concentration fixes being settled and unshifting, hence a seal), and the light of wisdom belonging to every kind of practice of samādhi (the practices that arise within samādhi).

The Sixth Storey: Bodhisattvas Displaying Fifteen Gates of Wisdom

He saw that on the sixth storey there were bodhisattvas who had all brought to accomplishment a most profound wisdom, who had penetrated the nature of all dharmas with perfect clarity, who had brought to accomplishment the vast gate of unobstructed dhāraṇī and samādhi, whose conduct was without obstruction, and who did not abide in the two opposed sides of things; gathered together in an inexpressible ground of awakening of exquisite adornment, they displayed the gates of prajñā-pāramitā (wisdom that has gone to the far shore) one by one. That is to say: the prajñā-pāramitā gate of the treasury of stillness, the prajñā-pāramitā gate of the knowledge that well discerns all beings, the prajñā-pāramitā gate of the unshakable, the prajñā-pāramitā gate of the light free of desire, the prajñā-pāramitā gate of the treasury that cannot be subdued, the prajñā-pāramitā gate that illumines the wheel of beings, the prajñā-pāramitā gate of the ocean-treasury, the prajñā-pāramitā gate of universal eyes that give and gain, the prajñā-pāramitā gate that enters the inexhaustible treasury, the prajñā-pāramitā gate of the ocean of all skillful means, the prajñā-pāramitā gate that enters the ocean of all worlds, the prajñā-pāramitā gate of unobstructed eloquence, the prajñā-pāramitā gate that accords with beings, the prajñā-pāramitā gate of unobstructed light, the prajñā-pāramitā gate that ever contemplates former conditions and spreads the cloud of Dharma — and they expounded a million asaṃkhyeya (numberless) prajñā-pāramitā gates such as these.

The Seventh Storey: Obtaining the Forbearance of the Echo

He saw that on the seventh storey there were bodhisattvas who had obtained the forbearance of the echo (the forbearance that knows all the Dharma gates of sound to be like an echo, and rests in that), who by the knowledge of skillful means discerned and contemplated and so found their way out, and who were all able to hear and hold the right Dharma of the buddhas.

The Eighth Storey: Spiritual Powers Pervading the Lands, Foremost in the Assemblies

He saw that on the eighth storey there were measureless bodhisattvas gathered together, all of whom had obtained spiritual powers without falling back, who could fill the lands of the ten directions with a single voice, whose bodies appeared everywhere in all the grounds of awakening, exhausting the whole Dharma realm with nothing left unpervaded, who entered everywhere into the realm of the buddhas, saw everywhere the bodies of the buddhas, and were everywhere foremost in all the assemblies of the buddhas, expounding the Dharma.

The Ninth Storey: Bodhisattvas Bound to One More Birth

He saw that on the ninth storey the bodhisattvas bound to one more birth before becoming buddhas were gathered in assembly.

The Tenth Storey: All the Tathāgatas Filling It

He saw that on the tenth storey all the tathāgatas filled it: from their first raising of the mind, cultivating the bodhisattva practice, passing beyond birth and death, bringing their great vows and the power of their spiritual penetrations to fullness, purifying the buddha-lands and the assemblies at the ground of awakening, turning the wheel of the right Dharma, and taming beings. All of this he caused Sudhana to see with perfect clarity.

Sudhana Asks: By What Conditions Did This Come About

At that time, having seen these things, Sudhana said to the elder:

“Holy one! By what conditions was so pure an assembly brought about? What roots of goodness were planted, that such a reward has been gained?”

The Elder Answers with the Original Cause: One Pellet of Incense, and the Dedication to Three Places

The elder told him:

“Son of good family! I call to mind the past, beyond as many kalpas as there are dust-motes in a buddha-land, when there was a world named Perfect Adornment, whose buddha was called the Tathāgata King of the Boundless Light That Universally Adorns the Dharma Realm, the Worthy One (worthy to receive offerings), the Perfectly Awakened One, complete in all ten titles. When that buddha entered the city, I made music sound, and I burned one pellet of incense as an offering to him, and I dedicated and directed this merit and virtue to three places, namely: to be forever free of all poverty and hardship, to see the buddhas and the good friends always, and to hear the right Dharma constantly — and so I gained such a reward as this.

Humbling Himself and Pointing to the Superior (Chengguan’s Outline): I Know Only This One Treasury

“Son of good family! I know only this bodhisattva liberation gate of the treasury of measureless merit. As for the bodhisattva-mahāsattvas (the great bodhisattvas), they have obtained the inconceivable treasury of merit and virtue; they enter the ocean of the Tathāgata’s body that is without discrimination, receive the unsurpassed cloud of Dharma that is without discrimination, cultivate the equipment of merit and virtue that is without discrimination (the provision relied upon in bringing merit to accomplishment), raise the net of the practice of Samantabhadra that is without discrimination (the practices of Samantabhadra interlacing one another like the meshes of a net), enter the realm of samādhi that is without discrimination, are equal to the roots of goodness of bodhisattvas that are without discrimination, abide where the Tathāgatas abide without discrimination, realize the sameness of the three times that is without discrimination, and abide in the realm of universal eyes that is without discrimination (the realm reached by an eye that reaches everywhere), dwelling through all the kalpas without weariness — how then could I know or tell of their practice of merit?

Pointing to the Next Friend (Chengguan’s Outline): The Elder Universal Eye in the City of Universal Gate, in the Land of Vine Root

“Son of good family! Going south from here, there is a land named Vine Root; in that land there is a city named Universal Gate; and in the city there is an elder named Universal Eye. Go there and ask him: how is a bodhisattva to study the bodhisattva practice and cultivate the bodhisattva path?”

Cherishing His Virtue and Taking Leave (Chengguan’s Outline)

Then Sudhana the youth bowed to the elder’s feet, circumambulated him numberless times, gazed up at him with earnest devotion, and took his leave and departed.

義疏Exposition

What He Was Doing on the Road Before He Reached the Next Teacher

This unit does not open with walking; it opens with ten clauses of calling to mind. Sudhana, having heard the gate of liberation from the householder Bright Wisdom, then “roamed at ease in that ocean of merit, tilled that field of merit, gazed up at that mountain of merit, went toward that ford of merit, opened that treasury of merit, contemplated that Dharma of merit, purified that wheel of merit, savored that accumulation of merit, brought forth that strength of merit, increased that force of merit.” What all ten clauses are fastened to is the one word “merit,” while the ten acts performed are each different: to roam is to be steeped in it, to till is to set one’s hand to working it, to gaze up is to lift the head and see how high it stands, to go toward is to make for it, to open is to unlock it, to contemplate is to see clearly what it is, to purify is to wash it clean, to savor is to taste its flavor, to bring forth is to let it grow out of oneself, to increase is to make it larger.

Why should a single merit be treated in ten ways? Because what the previous good friend, the householder Bright Wisdom, showed was precisely the gate of merit, and merit is not a thing one takes in hand and has done with. A misreading must be cleared away: that going about to study means changing the subject every time one changes teachers, so that what was gained at the last station is set down and left behind. The order the scripture text gives is the exact opposite — these ten clauses are done on the road, not done on the seat.

Bringing it to the ground: what turns over in the mind along the stretch of road after leaving one good friend decides what one is able to see when one reaches the next. What this unit gives next is a house of ten storeys — and had these ten clauses not first ripened the sense of merit, that house too would have been, in Sudhana’s eyes, no more than a house.

Why This Teacher Was Found in the Marketplace

Sudhana “traveled on gradually toward the city of the Lion, searching everywhere for the elder Jewel Topknot,” and the place where he found him is “he saw this elder right in the middle of the market.” A great good friend whose dwelling has storeyed pavilions ten deep, and whom Chengguan judges to gather in the ten grounds and the ten practices together — and the scripture text has Sudhana meet him, of all places, in the market.

This stroke is not written carelessly. Chengguan outlines this passage as the seeing, the paying of respects, and the inquiring, and turns a phrase upon this one line, saying that “his being seen in the market shows that he dwells amid clamor and forgets the mind, that amid confusion he is constantly in concentration” — in the noisiest place he is able to forget the mind; in the most confused place he is constantly within concentration. Li Tongxuan reads this line in the same direction, saying “his being seen in the market makes clear that stillness and confusion are equal,” stillness and confusion being, in him, one and the same equal thing.

A misreading must be cleared away: that concentration must be sustained by its surroundings, and therefore a good friend ought to be found in the mountain forests. Were it so, the scripture text would need only to write that he was in his house — that house is a ready-made place of purity. Bringing it to the ground: to test one’s own concentration, do not look at how long one has sat; look at whether it can stand up to the marketplace. What this friend is assigned to is precisely the practice free of delusion and confusion among the ten practices, and these three graphs are glossed in Chengguan’s Yanyi chao as “concentration is aided by wisdom: in stillness nothing is left unilluminated, in movement there is no departing from quiet” — in stillness there is not one spot that is not lit, and in movement there is not one moment of leaving quiet.

Sudhana Asks the Same Question Again: How to Study, How to Cultivate

Sudhana’s question keeps broadly the same form across the fifty-odd units of this assembly, and the one in this unit is the complete pattern: “Holy one! I have already raised the mind of anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, but I do not yet know how a bodhisattva is to study the bodhisattva practice, or how he is to cultivate the bodhisattva path. It would be good, holy one, if you would expound for me the paths of the bodhisattvas — I would ride upon this path and go toward omniscience!”

Four parts: first he reports that he has already raised the mind; next he states the two things he does not know (how to study the practice, how to cultivate the path); then he entreats; and last he states what he is ultimately after (going toward omniscience). One must ask: if every one of them asks the same thing, why does the scripture text write it out again in every unit? Because though what is asked is the same, the person met is not, and so the answer obtained is different every time — the sameness of the question is exactly what brings out the difference of the answers.

A misreading must be cleared away: that “I have already raised the mind of awakening” is a polite way of speaking about oneself. It is the qualification for entry: without first raising the mind, the practice and the path he goes on to ask about have nothing to be fastened to. Bringing it to the ground: every time, Sudhana begins from ‘I have already raised the mind, and I do not yet know’ — acknowledging first what he has, stating plainly what he does not, and this is the complete posture of one who seeks the Dharma.

He Answers Not One Word of Doctrine, but First Takes Sudhana by the Hand

The question asked, this elder did not teach. What the scripture text writes is “at that time the elder took Sudhana by the hand and led him to where he lived, showing him his house.” Between the question and the answer lie a stretch of road and a single gesture — taking the hand, bringing him home.

Why must this stretch be there? Chengguan divides the conferring of his own Dharma realm into four, and puts the taking of the hand first, saying “first, taking him by the hand and leading him on, which is the skillful means of conferring the Dharma, and shows that the knowledge of preparatory practice returns to direct realization.” Taking the hand is not courtesy; it is “the skillful means of conferring the Dharma”: the knowledge belonging to the stage of preparatory practice needs this one leading in order to return to direct realization. Li Tongxuan puts out a separate phrase upon this line, saying “as for his taking Sudhana by the hand, it is drawing him in and receiving him.”

A misreading must be cleared away: that conferring the Dharma must mean opening one’s mouth and speaking. From beginning to end in this unit the elder speaks only four passages, three of them at the very end; and for the part that is the direct conferring of the Dharma realm, all he says is one line: “Son of good family! Just look at my house.” Bringing it to the ground: the most important move a good friend makes is sometimes not to speak to you, but to take you somewhere and let you see for yourself.

“Just Look at My House” — These Four Chinese Characters Are the Direct Conferring of the Dharma Realm

The first thing the elder says is “Son of good family! Just look at my house.” Chengguan judges this line to be the second part, saying “second, from ‘he said in this way’ downward, is the showing of where he dwells, which is the direct conferring of the Dharma realm” — this one line, the showing of where he dwells, is the formal handing over of the Dharma realm to Sudhana.

One must ask: how can a single ‘look at my house’ be the direct conferring of the Dharma realm? Because the house observed below is not a building; it is the shape and figure of this bodhisattva’s whole practice, position, and reward. At the end of the three senses of the ten storeys Chengguan gathers it into one line, saying “taking together the dharmas of cause and fruit and practice and position in the three senses above, they are made the elder’s house” — cause, fruit, practice, position: these dharmas, put together, are the elder’s house. So the three Chinese characters that say “look at my house” amount to saying ‘come and see the whole of what I have cultivated and realized in this life.’

A misreading must be cleared away: that this is a display of wealth. Were it a display of wealth, Sudhana would not have asked, when he had finished looking, “by what conditions was this brought about,” nor would the elder have answered with one pellet of incense. Bringing it to the ground: what one can truly bring out and show another is the road one has walked, not the things picked up along it.

What the House Is Like: Ten Storeys and Eight Gates

What Sudhana saw as a whole is: “pure and full of light, made of true gold, with silver for its walls, crystal for its halls, and the deep-blue beryl jewel for its storeyed pavilions, while the exquisite jewel giant-clam formed its pillars,” and there follow the jeweled seat, the jeweled curtains, the netting of true pearls, the pool of agate, and the ranks of jeweled trees, and the last line is “his house was broad and spacious, with ten storeys and eight gates.”

Li Tongxuan does not take Chengguan’s gathering-into-one, but matches the materials one by one with the perfections. True gold is the main substance of the house, figuring the substance of concentration as white, pure, and stainless; silver for the walls is “the substance of meditation completing the precepts, which is the sense of guarding” — the use of a wall is to guard, and the use of the precepts is likewise to guard. Crystal for the halls is “the substance of meditation revealing knowledge and completing forbearance”; and he puts a phrase upon this jewel, that it is “like water-crystal, bright and pure, yet holding many colors that differ” — bright and pure and yet able to hold many colors is exactly the mark of forbearance. The deep-blue beryl jewel for the storeyed pavilions is “the making of vigor out of the substance of meditation, so that contemplative illumination grows the brighter, purer, and cleaner” — the further the contemplation advances, the purer its color. The pillars are “meditation made the practice, so that all dharmas are upheld and sustained” — the use of a pillar is to uphold, and so a pillar figures upholding. As for the remaining adornments below these, he says they are “ranked in order according to the ten perfections,” and glosses them no further one by one. What is to be looked at is the consistency of this way of reading: a difference of material is a difference of perfection; and the reason they can be matched one by one is that this house was never a building in the first place.

Ten storeys and eight gates: these four Chinese characters are the bone of this unit. Chengguan first glosses their shape, saying “as for the ten storeys and eight gates, it is like the form of an eight-sided pagoda; the storeys and the gates have three senses each, the storeys being explained in the separate section” — it is a pagoda-form of eight sides, the storeys have three senses, and the gates have three as well. As for the three senses of the gates, he says “first, taking it broadly as the path cultivated, the eightfold right path is made the gates, since the eightfold right path leads into all the positions. Second, taking it as the path relied upon, the eight consciousnesses are made the gates, since it is within the eye faculty that one enters right concentration … Third, taking it as the doctrine that reveals the principle, it is the four propositions entering the Dharma. Doctrine and principle have four each, and so there are eight gates.” The eightfold right path is the path cultivated; the eight consciousnesses are the path relied upon; the four propositions of doctrine and the four of principle together make eight, and that is taking the doctrine as revealing the principle.

Upon this the Yanyi chao opens a further road. The Chao, going by the new scripture, says “two gates on each face,” and therefore has eight gates (the eighty at this point reads “ten storeys and eight gates,” while the four words “two gates on each face” answer to the forty’s “on each of its four sides two gates were opened”); the Chao says “then it may equally be by the difference of keeping and obliterating in the four gates that eight are made” — there are not another eight gates; each of the four becomes two, once as kept and once as obliterated. The gate of existence: “seeing the exquisite existence of mind and entering the Dharma realm” is the gate of existence; “but if one grasps at existence, then the mark of existence is swept away,” and it is named the gate of non-existence. The gate of emptiness: “to know that dharmas are empty and still is the gate of emptiness”; and yet “taking emptiness as the gate of emptiness, one provisionally speaks of the gate of non-emptiness.” The third: if one says “deluded confusion is fundamentally empty while true knowledge is not empty,” that is the gate of both existence and emptiness; yet this gate too is provisional, for “the deluded is set up in dependence on the true; the deluded has no source of its own, and the true is declared over against the deluded, so that the true is not the true either” — the two substances not standing, both are kept and both are lost, and there comes “the gate of both existent and non-existent, both non-existent and not non-existent.” The fourth: to call it existent, “it has no mark and no name”; to call it non-existent, “the sage takes it as his numinous ground”; and so it is the gate of neither existence nor non-existence; yet “if one is stuck in the double negation, one has not escaped frivolous discourse, and so it is swept away again,” and there comes “the gate of neither-not-existent-nor-not-non-existent.” The turn by which grasping is swept away four times over lies just here: first the mark of existence is swept away, next the taking of emptiness as emptiness, next the two substances of true and deluded, and last the sticking in the double negation — and each sweeping restores the gate before it from ‘a view held’ to ‘a gate one can enter.’

A misreading must be cleared away: that the eight gates are only a number of a building. Under the third sense Chengguan further sorts the gaining from the losing, saying “that is: if the intent be lost, then existence and emptiness are both obliterated, and it becomes the four defamations; if the intent be gained, they lead one in, and all alike are called gates” — the same four propositions: used well they are four gates, used badly they are four defamations. The Yanyi chao draws this tighter still: “gain the intent and they are gates; lose the intent and these eight are not gates either.” Li Tongxuan takes only the one sense of the eightfold right path, saying “the four quarters make eight in all, which makes clear the practice of the eightfold right path.” Bringing it to the ground: what makes a gate a gate is not the gate itself, but the person who can get through it.

The Lowest Storey: The Giving of Food and Drink

Of the first of the ten storeys the scripture text says only eight Chinese characters: “he saw that the lowest storey was the giving of every kind of food and drink.”

Why should the lowest storey of a house that Chengguan judges to gather in the ten grounds be a place where people are given something to eat? Chengguan answers this under the first sense of the ten storeys, saying “first, the giving of food, which shows the practice of giving on the first ground” — what the bodhisattva of the first ground practices is the perfection of giving, and the most intimate thing in giving is food and drink. And under the third sense, this storey is the first of “the first four being the giving of goods,” after which the goods grow weightier and the matter harder, and so he says “each later one grows harder.”

A misreading must be cleared away: that giving people food is the shallowest of practices and so is put at the bottom. It is put at the bottom not because it is shallow but because it is first — every practice sets out from here, and everyone receives its use from here. Li Tongxuan, matching the ten perfections “ranked from the bottom upward,” likewise has giving as the first. Bringing it to the ground: in a house of ten storeys, the lowest storey is always the one kept open for feeding people; however high the nine above it may be, they stand upon this one.

The Second Storey: The Giving of Jeweled Garments

The second storey is “the giving of every kind of jeweled garment.”

From food to clothing is the second layer of the goods given. Chengguan matches it with the second ground, saying “the second ground, keeping the precepts, with shame and conscience for its garment.” This line must be read carefully: he is not saying that the bodhisattva of the second ground gives garments away, but that the garment here stands for the keeping of precepts — for the teaching often takes shame and conscience as a garment, able to cover what is unseemly in the body. The second is precisely the Stainless Ground, whose chief practice is the precepts.

One must ask: the scripture text says only that garments are given, so how can it stand for the precepts? Because the ten storeys are one set of figures: what is given on each storey is at the same time what is cultivated at each position. What is given, as a matter of fact, is a garment; what it figures is shame and conscience. And a misreading must be cleared away: that reading it this way turns the scripture text into an allegory and lets the matter of fact fall away. It does not — the matter of fact is still the actual giving of garments, and the figure is a further layer read out on top of the fact; the two do not obstruct each other.

Bringing it to the ground: shame and conscience are worn upon the body, not kept unmoving in the mind. When a man has them, it can be seen in how he carries himself, as a garment is seen upon the body.

The Third Storey: The Giving of All Jeweled Ornaments

The third storey is “the giving of all jeweled ornaments.” Ornaments are the necklaces, bracelets, and armlets and their kind.

Chengguan matches it with the third ground, saying “the third ground, the practice of forbearance made its ornaments.” The third is the Luminous Ground, whose chief practice is forbearance. How can forbearance serve as an ornament? Because forbearance is not the swallowing of anger; it is the not altering of one’s bearing even when one is encroached upon and injured — and such a man’s bearing is naturally worth looking at, as though he wore ornaments upon his body.

A misreading must be cleared away: that forbearance is the taking of wrong and therefore an unhandsome thing. The scripture text here matches it, of all things, with ornaments. Bringing it to the ground: what is truly handsome in a man is not how he looks when all goes well, but how he looks when he is struck against — the countenance at that moment is the ornament he wears.

The Fourth Storey: The Giving of Attendant Women and the Finest Jewels

The fourth storey is “the giving of every kind of attendant woman, and of all the finest and most exquisite jewels.”

Chengguan matches it with the fourth ground, saying “the fourth ground, the factors of the path made the inner retinue, vigor being what is precious.” The fourth is the Flaming Wisdom Ground, whose chief practice is vigor, and what is cultivated there is the thirty-seven factors of the path. He reads the attendant women as “the inner retinue” — the factors of the path are the bodhisattva’s inward retinue; and he reads the jewels as “vigor being what is precious” — vigor is the jewel worth prizing.

A misreading must be cleared away: that the giving of attendant women is a hard passage, even a questionable one. What the scripture text lists is, as a matter of fact, what that world called the highest of gifts; as a figure, Chengguan reads it as the inner retinue, that is, the constant and inseparable company of the thirty-seven factors of the path. This is the reading of the ancient worthies, not something the scripture text marks for itself, yet it is precisely what holds the one set of figures of the ten storeys together within. Bringing it to the ground: the retinue that truly stays with a man his whole life long is the dharmas he cultivates daily, and nothing else.

The Fifth Storey: Bodhisattvas of the Fifth Ground Gathered Like Clouds, Expounding the Dharma

From the fifth storey up, what is seen is no longer the goods given but the assembly gathered. The scripture text says “he saw that on the fifth storey there were even bodhisattvas of the fifth ground gathered there like clouds, expounding every kind of Dharma for the benefit of the world, having brought to accomplishment all the gates of dhāraṇī, every kind of seal of samādhi, and the light of wisdom belonging to every kind of practice of samādhi.”

Chengguan passes over this in four graphs, saying “the fifth ground, plain in the text” — the scripture text itself writes “bodhisattvas of the fifth ground,” and no further matching is needed. And under the third sense, the fifth and sixth storeys are “the next two, the gathering for the giving of Dharma, the first shallow and the second deep”: the first four storeys give goods, and these two give Dharma, and within the giving of Dharma the fifth is shallow and the sixth deep.

One must ask: why does the giving of Dharma only begin at the fifth storey? Because the first four storeys are the provisions, and the giving of Dharma requires a vessel able to receive it. A misreading must be cleared away: that the giving of goods is worldly and the giving of Dharma is the Way, and so one ought to read straight from the fifth storey. Were that so, this house would need only six storeys. Bringing it to the ground: the giving of goods and the giving of Dharma are within the same house, related as lower and upper storeys, not as outside and inside.

The Sixth Storey: Fifteen Gates of Wisdom

The sixth storey is the longest passage in the whole house. The scripture text first writes of the persons — “there were bodhisattvas who had all brought to accomplishment a most profound wisdom, who had penetrated the nature of all dharmas with perfect clarity,” “whose conduct was without obstruction, and who did not abide in the two opposed sides of things” — then leads off with “that is to say” and lists fifteen prajñā-pāramitā gates by name, closing with “they expounded a million asaṃkhyeya prajñā-pāramitā gates such as these.”

Chengguan matches it with the sixth ground, saying “the sixth ground, since wisdom is made manifest” — the sixth, the Manifest Ground, has wisdom for its chief practice. He also judges this passage into three, saying “in the text there are three: first the summary. Next, from ‘that is to say’ downward, the separate display of the fifteen gates,” “afterward, from ‘they expounded such as these’ downward, the general conclusion,” and he puts a sense under each of the fifteen gates: the first, “the illumining substance is itself still, and there is nothing it does not embrace”; the second, “the illumining that is itself stillness leaves no capacity unexamined”; the third, “outer conditions do not turn it”; the fourth, “inward illumination seeks nothing”; the fifth, “the objects of delusion do not break it”; the sixth, “it breaks all delusions everywhere”; the seventh, “it holds surpassing virtue within and is most profound”; the eighth, “it sees the Dharma realm universally and without obstruction”; the ninth, “one is itself inexhaustible”; the tenth, “skillful in transforming without bound”; the eleventh, “inwardly realizing the world”; the twelfth, “outwardly setting forth surpassing eloquence”; the thirteenth, “bending to accord with what creatures desire”; the fourteenth, “fact and principle interlaced”; the fifteenth, “contemplating conditions and conferring the Dharma.”

Read gate against gate, the names in the scripture text and Chengguan’s glosses answer to one another exactly. “The treasury of stillness” is glossed “the illumining substance is itself still, and there is nothing it does not embrace” — the substance of illumining is of itself still, hence stillness; and nothing is left outside its holding, hence treasury. “The knowledge that well discerns all beings” is glossed “the illumining that is itself stillness leaves no capacity unexamined.” “The unshakable” is glossed “outer conditions do not turn it.” “The light free of desire” is glossed “inward illumination seeks nothing” — to illumine inwardly and seek nothing is freedom from desire. “The treasury that cannot be subdued” is glossed “the objects of delusion do not break it.” “Illumining the wheel of beings” is glossed “it breaks all delusions everywhere” — where it reaches the turning wheel of beings, delusions are broken through. “The ocean-treasury” is glossed “it holds surpassing virtue within and is most profound.” “Universal eyes that give and gain” is glossed “it sees the Dharma realm universally and without obstruction.” “Entering the inexhaustible treasury” is glossed “one is itself inexhaustible.” “The ocean of all skillful means” is glossed “skillful in transforming without bound.” “Entering the ocean of all worlds” is glossed “inwardly realizing the world.” “Unobstructed eloquence” is glossed “outwardly setting forth surpassing eloquence.” “According with beings” is glossed “bending to accord with what creatures desire.” “Unobstructed light” is glossed “fact and principle interlaced” — what makes the light unobstructed is exactly that fact and principle are woven into each other. “Ever contemplating former conditions and spreading the cloud of Dharma” is glossed “contemplating conditions and conferring the Dharma.” Why the fifteen differ: the first ten speak of wisdom’s own substance (stillness · illumining · unshakability · freedom from desire · indestructibility · the breaking of delusion · holding within · universal seeing · inexhaustibility · skillful transforming), and the last five speak of what wisdom passes through (self-realization · outward expounding · according with desires · fact and principle · the conferring of Dharma); the substance once standing, there is then the working it passes through.

A misreading must be cleared away: that the fifteen names are a spread of synonyms, so that reading one lets you infer the rest. Chengguan’s fifteen lines show at once that it is not so — the first two are a pair, stillness and illumining; the several in the middle face objects and face delusions; and the last five cannot all be put down to the working of transforming others: the eleventh, “inwardly realizing the world,” turns inward upon his own realization; only the twelfth, “outwardly setting forth surpassing eloquence,” turns outward in expounding; the thirteenth, “bending to accord with what creatures desire,” stoops to what beings want; the fourteenth, “fact and principle interlaced,” has fact and principle woven into each other; and the fifteenth, “contemplating conditions and conferring the Dharma,” comes down exactly upon this business of a good friend conferring the Dharma. Bringing it to the ground: wisdom is not one capacity but fifteen faces and more; whichever face one cannot bring to bear is the face that has not yet become manifest.

The Seventh Storey: Obtaining the Forbearance of the Echo

The seventh storey is “there were bodhisattvas who had obtained the forbearance of the echo, who by the knowledge of skillful means discerned and contemplated and so found their way out, and who were all able to hear and hold the right Dharma of the buddhas.”

The forbearance of the echo is one of the ten forbearances: knowing all sound and speech to be like an echo in a valley — sound there is, but no substance; it is not that there is no sound. Chengguan matches it with the seventh ground, saying “the seventh ground has a surpassing practice and knows every kind of teaching, and so it is said to obtain the forbearance of the echo.” What marks the seventh, the Far-Reaching Ground, is skillfulness in means, and to know every kind of teaching requires just this forbearance: knowing them to be like an echo, one will not cling to words and speech; holding them without forgetting, one will not fall into saying nothing at all.

A misreading must be cleared away: that once one knows words to be like an echo, one need not receive and hold the teaching. The scripture text in this passage puts, right after the forbearance of the echo, “and who were all able to hear and hold the right Dharma of the buddhas” — precisely because they are like an echo, one can hold them and not be crushed by them. Bringing it to the ground: doing two things at once with a single sentence — not taking it for something substantial, and not making light of it on that account — is what the forbearance of the echo looks like in daily use.

The Eighth Storey: One Voice Pervading the Lands, Foremost in the Assemblies

The eighth storey writes of spiritual powers. The scripture text says “measureless bodhisattvas gathered together, all of whom had obtained spiritual powers without falling back, who could fill the lands of the ten directions with a single voice, whose bodies appeared everywhere in all the grounds of awakening, exhausting the whole Dharma realm with nothing left unpervaded, who entered everywhere into the realm of the buddhas, saw everywhere the bodies of the buddhas, and were everywhere foremost in all the assemblies of the buddhas, expounding the Dharma.”

Chengguan judges that it holds two positions, saying “within the eighth storey two positions are held: first, the effortless spiritual powers of the eighth ground, the mastery over the three kinds of world. Second, the Dharma master of the ninth ground, able to expound with a single voice.” What marks the eighth, the Immovable Ground, is effortless practice, and so its spiritual powers are “without falling back”; the ninth, the Excellent Wisdom Ground, is the position of a Dharma master, and so it is “able to expound with a single voice.” One storey holding two grounds is a turning point in the matching of the ten storeys to the ten grounds in this unit.

A misreading must be cleared away: that spiritual powers are a display of ability. Behind every item the scripture text lists there follows another: pervading the lands is for the sake of appearing bodily at the grounds of awakening, appearing bodily is for the sake of entering everywhere into the realm of the buddhas, entering the realm of the buddhas is for the sake of expounding the Dharma in the assemblies. Bringing it to the ground: the use of spiritual powers here is only to let one sentence of Dharma arrive where it ought to arrive.

The Ninth Storey: Bound to One More Birth

The ninth storey is very short: “he saw that on the ninth storey the bodhisattvas bound to one more birth were gathered in assembly.” Bound to one more birth is the position with only one life remaining before buddhahood.

Chengguan says “the ninth storey too has two positions, since the tenth ground and equal awakening may both be taken as one birth” — both the tenth, the Dharma Cloud Ground, and equal awakening may be counted as bound to one more birth, and so this storey too holds two positions. And under the second sense (the ten storeys figuring the ten practices), he says “the ninth, bound to one more birth, since strength is the highest,” matching it with the ninth of the ten perfections, the perfection of strength.

A misreading must be cleared away: that at this storey there is nothing left to do. What the scripture text says is “gathered in assembly” — still gathering, still within this house. Bringing it to the ground: the last stretch of road is not spent waiting with empty hands; it is still spent among the assembly. The only difference is that when this one life is done, the matter is finished.

The Tenth Storey: All the Tathāgatas Filling It

The topmost storey is not bodhisattvas but buddhas. The scripture text says “he saw that on the tenth storey all the tathāgatas filled it: from their first raising of the mind, cultivating the bodhisattva practice, passing beyond birth and death, bringing their great vows and the power of their spiritual penetrations to fullness, purifying the buddha-lands and the assemblies at the ground of awakening, turning the wheel of the right Dharma, and taming beings. All of this he caused Sudhana to see with perfect clarity.”

Chengguan settles the matching in one line, saying “the tenth storey is the ground of the Tathāgata”; and under the second sense he says “the tenth, since only upon reaching the Tathāgata’s knowledge is it full,” matching it with the tenth perfection, the perfection of knowledge. Li Tongxuan matches it with the perfection of knowledge likewise, and glosses its aspect, saying “the tenth storey makes clear the tenth perfection of knowledge, wherein the causes and fruits of the buddhas of the three times are gathered into a full circle in a single thought, and the transforming of beings and the entering of nirvāṇa are all alike unshifting.”

What is worth noticing is how this storey is written: it does not write the fruit-virtues of a buddha; it writes a buddha’s course of life — from the first raising of the mind onward, cultivating, passing beyond birth and death, fulfilling vows, purifying lands, turning the wheel of Dharma, taming beings. A misreading must be cleared away: that the topmost storey ought to be the most abstruse. It is on the contrary the plainest passage of all, because it says over again, whole, the road that has been walked since the lowest storey. Bringing it to the ground: the last line, “all of this he caused Sudhana to see with perfect clarity” — the meaning of this house is that it is to be seen; and what is seen is a road running from the lowest storey to the highest.

Sudhana Asked Only One Thing: How Did This Come About

The ten storeys seen through, what Sudhana asked was not the name of a gate but where it came from: “Holy one! By what conditions was so pure an assembly brought about? What roots of goodness were planted, that such a reward has been gained?” Two questions — by what conditions such an assembly was drawn together, and what roots of goodness were planted to gain such a reward.

Chengguan judges this to be the fourth of the four parts of the conferring of his own Dharma realm, saying “fourth, from ‘at that time Sudhana saw these things’ downward, is the questioning and answering about the conditions, which is subsequently attained knowledge.” The first three cannot all be called the direct realization: the first, the taking of the hand and the leading on, is “the skillful means of conferring the Dharma,” whose work is to “show that the knowledge of preparatory practice returns to direct realization” — that knowledge returns into direct realization by it, and is not itself that realization; the second, the showing of where he dwells, is “the direct conferring of the Dharma realm,” the formal handing over; and only the third, Sudhana’s seeing of the house, is “the direct realization of the Dharma realm.” This fourth part, the questioning and answering about the conditions, is what is subsequently attained — to have realized and then to look back and know how it came so is subsequently attained knowledge.

A misreading must be cleared away: that having seen is enough, and asking where it came from is superfluous. The order of this unit is exactly the reverse: first the observing (direct realization), then the asking (subsequent attainment). Had there been observing and no asking, what Sudhana carried away would be the impression of a house; having asked, what he carries away is a road that can be walked. Bringing it to the ground: when one meets a man who has accomplished something, asking ‘how did he come by it’ is far more use than praising ‘how remarkable he is’ — and this unit has written that one question into the scripture.

One Pellet of Incense: The Cause Given in Answer Is Astonishingly Small

The elder’s answer is only a few lines: “I call to mind the past, beyond as many kalpas as there are dust-motes in a buddha-land, when there was a world named Perfect Adornment, whose buddha was called the Tathāgata King of the Boundless Light That Universally Adorns the Dharma Realm, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Awakened One, complete in all ten titles. When that buddha entered the city, I made music sound, and I burned one pellet of incense as an offering, and I dedicated and directed this merit and virtue to three places, namely: to be forever free of all poverty and hardship, to see the buddhas and the good friends always, and to hear the right Dharma constantly — and so I gained such a reward as this.”

The reward is ten storeys; the cause given in answer is one performance of music and one pellet of incense burned. The pivot lies in four graphs: “the dedicating to three places.” Chengguan matches the three places against the ten storeys in two groups, saying “as for the dedicating and directing to three places, being free of poverty draws the reward of the first four storeys. The two fruits, the second and the third, are the latter six layers” — the first place, freedom from poverty, draws the reward of the giving of goods on the first four storeys; the second and third places (always seeing the buddhas and the good friends, constantly hearing the right Dharma) draw the reward of Dharma and realization on the latter six. And as to how so slight a cause gains so great a reward, he says “a cause as slight as a single pellet, whose reward is surpassing by the power of the vow,” and again “it further signifies that all practices merged together give rise to the turning toward buddhahood, and then in any single practice there is nothing not furnished. What fruit would not be climbed to?” Li Tongxuan for his part sets up the figure upon the incense, saying “the incense of concentration, though only one pellet be burned, has the fivefold dharma-body complete in it.”

A misreading must be cleared away: that this says a small good may by luck gain a great reward. What the scripture text writes is the step that came after the offering — the dedicating. Bringing it to the ground: one and the same pellet of incense may be burned and be done with, or be burned and then turned toward three places; and the reward differs by that one turning.

Humbling Himself and Pointing to the Superior: I Know Only This One Treasury

The elder’s closing words: “Son of good family! I know only this bodhisattva liberation gate of the treasury of measureless merit.” On the two graphs “treasury of jewels” in the name of the gate, Chengguan glosses it by way of the house, saying “the jewels of the world and the three jewels are stored up and heaped within the ten layers, and so it is called a treasury of jewels. Its use is constant and inexhaustible, and this is measureless merit” — the jewels of the world and the three jewels are alike heaped up within these ten storeys, and so it is called a treasury of jewels; its use is never used up, and so it is called measureless merit.

Then comes the pointing to the superior, where the scripture text sets down nine clauses in a row with “without discrimination”: entering the ocean of the Tathāgata’s body without discrimination, receiving the unsurpassed cloud of Dharma without discrimination, cultivating the equipment of merit and virtue without discrimination, raising the net of the practice of Samantabhadra without discrimination, entering the realm of samādhi without discrimination, being equal to the roots of goodness of bodhisattvas without discrimination, abiding where the Tathāgatas abide without discrimination, realizing the sameness of the three times without discrimination, abiding in the realm of universal eyes without discrimination. Chengguan judges the text into the general and the particular, saying “that the treasury of merit and virtue is in every way inconceivable is the general clause. From ‘entering without discrimination’ downward is the particular exposition. It is by being without discrimination that all dharmas are furnished, and therefore it is inconceivable.”

What the nine clauses point to differs in each: “the ocean of the Tathāgata’s body” is the buddha-body entered, deep and wide as an ocean; “the unsurpassed cloud of Dharma” is the teaching received, covering all as a cloud; “the equipment of merit and virtue” is the provision cultivated, what the walking of the path relies upon; “the net of the practice of Samantabhadra” is the practice raised, practice interlacing practice as in a net; “the realm of samādhi” is the concentrated realm entered; “the roots of goodness of bodhisattvas” is the cause one is made equal to; “where the Tathāgatas abide” is the place of abiding, dwelling where the buddhas dwell; “the sameness of the three times” is the principle realized, the three times being one; “the realm of universal eyes” is the ground of seeing abided in, as far as universal eyes reach. The nine have an order of their own: from entering the buddha’s body to receiving the Dharma, to cultivating the provision, to raising the practice; and from practice to entering concentration, to being equal to the roots of goodness, to abiding where the buddhas abide, to realizing the sameness of the three times, to abiding in universal eyes — from what is entered to what is abided in, a single line running down. And the reason all nine are headed by “without discrimination” is exactly Chengguan’s judgment, “it is by being without discrimination that all dharmas are furnished”: it is not that nine separate matters are each without discrimination, but that the one matter of being without discrimination furnishes these nine.

A misreading must be cleared away: that humbling oneself is a courtesy. This passage shows at once that it is not: what he points to is a deeper place within the very same matter — his own house is piled up storey by storey “with discrimination,” whereas what the great bodhisattvas practice is being furnished with all dharmas “without discrimination.” Bringing it to the ground: to know which storey of the ten one has reached is far harder than to boast of having got through to the top.

Pointing to the Next Friend: The Elder Universal Eye

At the last the elder points the road: “Son of good family! Going south from here, there is a land named Vine Root; in that land there is a city named Universal Gate; and in the city there is an elder named Universal Eye. Go there and ask him: how is a bodhisattva to study the bodhisattva practice and cultivate the bodhisattva path?”

The three names read in a row have their own order: the land named Vine Root, the city named Universal Gate, the man named Universal Eye. And the question he is charged with is word for word the two questions Sudhana asked when he came — “how is he to study the bodhisattva practice and cultivate the bodhisattva path.”

A misreading must be cleared away: that pointing to the next friend is a formulaic close. It is in fact the pivot of the structure of this assembly: what each good friend confers is both his own single gate and also ‘where you should go next.’ Bringing it to the ground: that a teacher is willing to send you on to the next one is itself part of the Dharma he confers — he knows that his own gate has a boundary, and knows too that beyond the boundary there is more road.

Cherishing His Virtue and Taking Leave

The last line of this unit is “then Sudhana the youth bowed to his feet, circumambulated him numberless times, gazed up at him with earnest devotion, and took his leave and departed.” Four acts: bowing, circumambulating, gazing up, departing. Set beside the other units of this assembly, the leave-taking passage here is extremely short, having neither a list of what was gained nor a long passage of longing.

A misreading must be cleared away: that short means light. The weight of this passage lies not in its length but in its place — it comes right after the nine clauses of “without discrimination,” and directly beneath a house of ten storeys. Bringing it to the ground: to have looked through such a house and still be able to perform four acts quietly and go is itself what it looks like when what has been learned has been received into use.

Lineage

Of the text of this unit, the streams opened downward run in three lines.

The first is the line of one position gathering in the positions. Chengguan takes the ten storeys as figuring, in two senses at once, both the ten grounds and the ten practices, and returns them to the present position gathering in all positions, pointing back besides to the earlier Ocean Banner, saying “taking the ten storeys as figuring the two senses at once is as with Ocean Banner, where the present position had barely finished gathering in the ten positions before the attainment of buddhahood was spoken of. The earlier was assigned to the sixth position gathering them in, this to the fifth position gathering them in. The earlier gathered them by way of the direct recompense, this gathers them by way of the circumstantial recompense — both showing the position to be surpassing what went before.” Ocean Banner gathers in all positions by way of the direct recompense (assemblies issuing from the parts of his body), while this friend gathers them in by way of the circumstantial recompense (the house he dwells in): two units on one and the same axis, differing in the aspect they take. Li Tongxuan agrees in the main, his text running thus, saying “the storeyed pavilions of ten storeys belonging to this elder gather in altogether the ten abodes, the ten practices, the ten dedications, the ten grounds, the eleventh ground, and the buddha-fruit, all comprehended together.”

The second is the line of the divergent glosses of the several houses, each with its own track, recorded without adjudication. As for the outline of this unit, Chengguan makes six parts (seeking in accord with the teaching · seeing, paying respects, and inquiring · conferring his own Dharma realm · humbling himself and pointing to the superior, with the pointing to the next friend and the cherishing of his virtue and taking leave not set up as separate outline headings in his gloss), while Li Tongxuan does not follow the six parts but opens ten gates of his own under the direct entry into the Dharma gate of the present position. As for what the ten storeys figure, Chengguan sets up three senses (figuring the ten grounds · figuring the ten practices · figuring no position at all), while Li Tongxuan has the single sense of matching the ten perfections ranked from the bottom upward. As for the sense of the eight gates, Chengguan sets up three (the eightfold right path · the eight consciousnesses · the four gates of doctrine and principle), and Chengguan’s Yanyi chao further opens the four gates into eight by their being kept or obliterated (existence / non-existence · emptiness / non-emptiness · both existence and emptiness / both existent and non-existent and both non-existent and not non-existent · neither existence nor non-existence / neither-not-existent-nor-not-non-existent), while Li Tongxuan takes only the single sense of the eightfold right path. As for the gloss on the friend’s name, Chengguan glosses it by the name of the gate, “the jewels of the world and the three jewels are stored up and heaped within the ten layers, and so it is called a treasury of jewels,” while Li Tongxuan glosses it by the gate of concentration, “gathered altogether into a topknot, this being the sense of it.” As for the gloss on the city’s name, Chengguan gives no separate gloss, while Li Tongxuan makes it “the Lion’s Palace” and takes the sense of fearlessness. As for the figure of the original cause, Chengguan takes “a cause as slight as a single pellet, whose reward is surpassing by the power of the vow,” while Li Tongxuan takes “the incense of concentration, though only one pellet be burned, has the fivefold dharma-body complete in it.” Fazang’s Tanxuan ji and Zhiyan’s Souxuan ji both set up a dedicated gloss under the sixty-fascicle form of the name “Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā,” each on a track of his own: Fazang sets up three glosses on the ten layers (the ten grounds · the ten practices · not taken by position at all), broadly answering to Chengguan’s three senses though the wording differs; for the eight gates he takes the eight noble paths and sets out besides the four means of gathering and the four measureless minds; his gates of wisdom name ten in the heading and list eleven; and under the name of the gate he cites the Indian text. Zhiyan sets up three parts (the exhortation of the teaching · the entering · the direct entry), divides the direct entry into the gathering by the circumstantial recompense and the gathering by the direct recompense, and within the ten layers of the direct recompense marks the eighth layer as the virtue of the eighth ground with mastery over the three kinds of world and the tenth layer as the fruit contained within the cause. Zhiyan besides, in the section of the Kongmu zhang headed “fifth, taking it by the sense of the one vehicle,” takes this friend as attestation, saying “further, on the tenth ground there is also a separate attainment of buddhahood, as is said in the section on the good friend Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā” — and what makes him take this friend is precisely that this friend’s house of ten storeys gathers in everything from the ten abodes to the buddha-fruit, so that it can attest that beings “attain buddhahood alike in the lower positions and in the lower bodies”; this is Zhiyan’s own language of doctrinal classification, recorded without adjudication. All these divergent glosses are settled teachings of the ancient worthies.

The third is the line of the divergences between the witnesses. In the sixty-fascicle version this friend’s name is “Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā,” and five of its divergences bear upon doctrine. First, the place of the meeting: the eighty has him “right in the middle of the market,” the sixty has him “met upon the road” — Chengguan’s turn, “it shows that he dwells amid clamor and forgets the mind, that amid confusion he is constantly in concentration,” is fastened to the market of the eighty, and the sixty has no such text to turn. Second, the number of the gates of wisdom: the eighty names fifteen, the sixty eleven, the forty sixteen; the one name “the ocean-treasury” is wholly the same in the eighty and the sixty, while the forty has “the ocean-treasury of merit and virtue.” Fazang, glossing the sixty, names ten gates in his heading and lists eleven, close to the number of the sixty; Chengguan, glossing the eighty, judges it “the separate display of the fifteen gates.” Third, the name of the gate: the eighty has “the bodhisattva liberation gate of the treasury of measureless merit,” the sixty “the Dharma gate of the fulfilling of great vows,” the forty “the liberation gate of the treasury of merit of the unobstructed vow that universally adorns” — one names it by the treasury, one by the great vow, one by vow and treasury of merit together; and Fazang, under the sixty, cites besides the Indian text, “the unobstructed vow that adorns the ground of awakening,” glossing it himself, “his former vow penetrates to the subtlest, and this is named the unobstructed vow.” Fourth, the axis of the pointing to the superior: the eighty sets down nine clauses of “without discrimination,” the sixty several clauses of “that cannot be destroyed” — Fazang, glossing the indestructibility of the sixty, says “because its virtue is exhausted and full, because there is no further ascent, because it is not moved by conditions,” while Chengguan, glossing the non-discrimination of the eighty, says “it is by being without discrimination that all dharmas are furnished.” The one speaks from the unmovedness of virtue, the other from the furnishing of all dharmas by non-discrimination: they tend to the same place, and the aspect each takes differs. Fifth, the order of the last two clauses of the humbling of himself and the pointing to the superior is reversed between the two: the eighty has first “abiding in the realm of universal eyes free of discrimination” and then “abiding through all kalpas without weariness,” while the sixty has first “abiding through all kalpas without fatigue” and then “abiding in the ground of the realm of universal eyes that cannot be destroyed” — the eighty closing upon the kalpas, the sixty closing upon the realm. Recorded without adjudication.

The forty-fascicle version too carries this friend’s passage whole, its city “the Lion’s Palace” and the friend “Honored Dharma-Jewel Topknot,” and three of its divergences bear upon doctrine. First, on the sixth storey the eighty has “not abiding in the two opposed sides of things” where the forty has “abiding in the non-dual Dharma” — the one negating, the other affirming, and the tendency the same. Second, on the eighth storey the forty sets out besides the four similes “like an illusion, like a flame, like a shadow, like a reflection, without real nature,” making clear that the buddha-lands and assemblies seen have no real nature, where the eighty on this storey only narrates spiritual powers pervading the lands and has no such set of similes. Third, in the passage of the original cause the forty sets out, after the sounding of music and the burning of incense, a long passage of the cloud of incense raining over Jambudvīpa “for seven days and seven nights” and of the music setting forth the Tathāgata’s vast gathering of knowledge, where the eighty goes no further than the offering — for the one cause, the forty writes the marks it drew forth, the eighty writes it at its barest. Recorded without adjudication.

In the text of this one unit, the first half is looking and the second half is asking. What is looked at is ten storeys; what is asked about is one pellet of incense — and the whole weight of this unit falls upon the distance between the two.

本節經文要句之漢譯校本:實叉難陀 T279(底本)· 佛馱跋陀羅 T278(晉譯六十華嚴〈入法界品第三十四〉·卷四十八)· 般若 T293(四十華嚴·卷十一)。

澄觀《華嚴經疏》T35n1735 ·《演義鈔》T36n1736(八十華嚴逐文·主)

〔T36n1736 0676b09–0676b11〕

李通玄《新華嚴經論》T36n1739(表法異軌)

Sudhana’s fifteenth friend, the elder Dharma-Jewel Topknot: the whole unit runs to one thousand two hundred and ninety-nine graphs, and what it shows is a single scene — a house of ten storeys and eight gates. Sudhana asked about the path, and the elder answered not one word of doctrine; he only took him by the hand, led him home, and said 「善男子! tr. “Son of good family! Just look at my house.” What follows, from 「善財入已,次第觀察」 tr. “Sudhana went inside and observed in order” onward, is what Sudhana saw as he looked up storey by storey: on the lowest storey the giving of food, on the second the giving of garments, on the third the giving of ornaments, on the fourth the giving of attendant women and jewels, on the fifth bodhisattvas of the fifth ground expounding the Dharma, on the sixth bodhisattvas displaying fifteen gates of wisdom, on the seventh the obtaining of the forbearance of the echo, on the eighth spiritual powers pervading the lands, on the ninth those bound to one more birth, on the tenth all the tathāgatas filling it. Only when he had seen it through did he ask one thing, 「何緣致此清淨眾會」 tr. “by what conditions was so pure an assembly brought about”, and the answer was no more than that in a past life he made music sound and burned incense, and dedicated the merit to three places. Chengguan outlines this unit in six parts, opens four under 「授己法界」 tr. “the conferring of his own Dharma realm”, sets up three senses for the ten storeys (first, figuring the ten grounds; second, figuring the ten practices; third, figuring no position at all), and sets up three senses for the eight gates (the eightfold right path made the gates, the eight consciousnesses made the gates, the four gates of doctrine and principle). The gate obtained by the elder is named 「菩薩無量福德寶藏解脫門」 tr. “the bodhisattva liberation gate of the treasury of measureless merit”. In the sixty-fascicle version this friend’s name is 「法寶周羅」 tr. “Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā”, and his gates of wisdom are eleven, where the eighty-fascicle version has fifteen and the forty-fascicle sixteen. Fazang’s Tanxuan ji and Zhiyan’s Souxuan ji both set up a gloss dedicated to this unit under the sixty-fascicle form of the name 「法寶周羅」 tr. “Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā”, each with an outline of his own. This unit has no verses.

I. Doctrinal Outline and Placement

Outline systemThe place of this unit’s scripture text within it
The base text T279, in thirty-nine chaptersChapter 39, Entering the Dharma Realm (the ninth assembly, in the Jeta Grove); the elder Dharma-Jewel Topknot = 〔T10 0353c06〕–〔0354b14 前〕
Chengguan, Huayan jing shuThe direct gloss on this unit begins 〔T35n1735 0934c07〕 with 「第五法寶髻,寄無癡亂行」 tr. “the fifth, Dharma-Jewel Topknot, assigned to the practice free of delusion and confusion”, and ends before the sixth friend, the elder Universal Eye 〔0935b01〕
Chengguan, Yanyi chaoGlosses the reason for the assignment to the practice free of delusion and confusion, and treats the eight gates at length 〔T36n1736 0676b03–0676b22〕
Fazang, Tanxuan ji (the commentary on the sixty-fascicle Avataṃsaka)The gloss dedicated to this unit begins 〔T35n1733 0465c25〕 with 「第五離癡亂行中,初舉法勸修內」 tr. “within the fifth practice, that of leaving delusion and confusion: first, within the raising of the Dharma and the exhortation to cultivate”, and ends with 「第五行竟」 tr. “the fifth practice is finished” 〔T35n1733 0466c06〕; what he glosses is the sixty-fascicle form of the name 「法寶周羅」 tr. “Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā”
Li Tongxuan, Xin Huayan jing lunThe gloss on the city’s name and the friend’s name begins 〔T36n1739 0970a10〕; the ten gates of the direct entry into the Dharma gate of the present position 〔0970a19〕; the figures set out clause by clause 〔0970a27–0970c14〕
Zhiyan, Souxuan jiThe gloss dedicated to this unit begins 〔T35n1732 0094c03〕 with 「第十五離癡亂行菩薩位,長者名法寶周羅,入滿足大願法門」 tr. “the bodhisattva of the fifteenth, the practice of leaving delusion and confusion: the elder of this position is named Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā, and he enters the Dharma gate of the fulfilling of great vows”, and ends within the first half of 0094c18 (the latter half of that same line already begins the outline of the next position); what he glosses is the sixty-fascicle form of the name 「法寶周羅」 tr. “Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā”

Chengguan’s outline in six parts — the frame of this unit. The heading of the outline and its first part:

tr. “The fifth, Dharma-Jewel Topknot, assigned to the practice free of delusion and confusion. Of the six, the first passage may be understood.” 〔T35n1735 0934c07〕

The second part, the seeing, the paying of respects, and the inquiring, with the gloss on why he is seen in the market:

tr. “Second, from ‘he saw this elder’ downward, is the seeing, the paying of respects, and the inquiring. That he is seen in the market shows that he dwells amid clamor and forgets the mind, that amid confusion he is constantly in concentration.”

The third part, the conferring of his own Dharma realm, which is opened again into four and is the main body of this unit:

tr. “Third, from ‘at that time the elder’ downward, is the conferring of his own Dharma realm. Within it there are four: first, taking him by the hand and leading him on, which is the skillful means of conferring the Dharma, showing that the knowledge of preparatory practice returns to direct realization. Second, from ‘he said in this way’ downward, is the showing of where he dwells, which is the direct conferring of the Dharma realm. Third, from ‘at that time Sudhana saw his’ downward, is the direct realization of the Dharma realm. Fourth, from ‘at that time Sudhana saw these things’ downward, is the questioning and answering about the conditions, which is subsequently attained knowledge.”

The one part that is the direct realization of the Dharma realm is opened again into the general and the particular:

tr. “Within the third there are two: first the general, and afterward, from ‘Sudhana went inside’ downward, the particular.”

The fourth part, the humbling of himself and the pointing to the superior:

tr. “Fourth, from ‘son of good family’ downward, is the humbling of himself and the pointing to the superior.”

Within this window Chengguan sets up no separate outline headings for 「指示後友」 tr. “the pointing to the next friend” and 「戀德禮辭」 tr. “the cherishing of his virtue and the taking of leave”; at the end of the passage on humbling himself and pointing to the superior his gloss passes straight to the outline heading of the next unit 〔0935b01〕, and the two matters are not outlined clause by clause. The lack is recorded as it stands.

Li Tongxuan’s ten gates (he does not follow the six parts, but opens a road of his own):

tr. “Within this passage the sense is divided into ten gates: first, calling to mind the teaching of the good friend and increasing the ocean of merit; second, traveling south by stages toward the city of the Lion; third, searching everywhere for the elder Jewel Topknot; fourth, seeing him in the market, paying respects, and duly setting forth what he seeks; fifth, the elder taking Sudhana by the hand and going to the house where he dwells; sixth, having Sudhana observe the house of his recompense, made of every kind of jewel, with ten storeys and eight gates; seventh, Sudhana, having observed, asking about the cause he cultivated; eighth, the elder telling him of the cause he cultivated in the past; ninth, setting forth as well the dedicating to three places; tenth, the advancing by way of pointing to virtue.” 〔T36n1739 0970a20–0970a27〕

III. Similes and Rhetoric

(i) The parallel series of merit in ten layers — this unit does not open by narrating the road, but first writes, in ten clauses, Sudhana calling to mind the teaching of the previous friend, every clause fastened to 「彼福德」 tr. “that merit”, while the verbs of what is done differ ten ways: roaming, tilling, gazing up, going toward, opening, contemplating, purifying, savoring, bringing forth, increasing. The images they are fastened to likewise differ ten ways: ocean, field, mountain, ford, treasury, Dharma, wheel, accumulation, strength, force 〔T10n0279 0353c06–0353c09〕. Ten acts matched with ten shapes: this is the most evenly ordered of all the passages in this assembly that call the previous friend to mind.

(ii) The house as a simile for the Dharma realm — the largest single figure in this unit is the writing of a bodhisattva’s whole practice and position as a house. From 「清淨光明,真金所成」 tr. “pure and full of light, made of true gold” 〔T10n0279 0353c17〕 onward the scripture text lists its materials one by one: silver for the walls, crystal for the halls, the deep-blue beryl jewel for the storeyed pavilions, the exquisite jewel giant-clam for the pillars, red-pearl maṇi for the lion seat, maṇi for the curtains, true pearls for the netting, a jeweled pool of agate, measureless jeweled trees. Chengguan gathers this simile into one line: 「總上三義因果行位等法,以為長者之宅。」 tr. “Taking together the dharmas of cause and fruit and practice and position in the three senses above, they are made the elder’s house.” 〔T35n1735 0935a20–a21〕 Li Tongxuan for his part matches the materials one by one with the perfections, saying 「真金為舍宅之大體、白銀為牆者,以禪體成戒,為防護義。 tr. “That true gold is the main substance of the house, and silver its walls, is because the substance of meditation completes the precepts, which is the sense of guarding. That crystal is its halls is because the substance of meditation reveals knowledge and completes forbearance.” 〔T36n1739 0970b09–b12〕

(iii) The rhetoric of ascent, the ten storeys growing more excellent by stages — the ten storeys run from the bottom upward, and both the goods given and the assemblies gathered grow more excellent storey by storey: food and drink, jeweled garments, ornaments, attendant women and jewels (goods); bodhisattvas of the fifth ground expounding the Dharma, bodhisattvas displaying wisdom (Dharma); the forbearance of the echo, spiritual powers pervading the lands (realization); those bound to one more birth, all the tathāgatas (fruit). Chengguan sets up his third sense upon this, saying 「三者總不表位,但此菩薩以行就機,現居勝報漸次增勝。 tr. “Third, they figure no position at all; it is only that this bodhisattva, bringing his practice to meet capacities, manifests a dwelling of surpassing recompense that grows more excellent by stages. The ten show inexhaustibility: the first four are the giving of goods, each later one growing harder; the next two are the gathering for the giving of Dharma, the first shallow and the second deep; the next two are the obtaining of the Dharma, the first narrow and the second broad; the last two manifest surpassing virtue, the first the cause and the second the fruit.” 〔T35n1735 0935a16–0935a20〕

(iv) The parallel series of the fifteen gates of wisdom — in the passage on the sixth storey the scripture text leads off with 「所謂」 tr. “that is to say” and lists fifteen prajñā-pāramitā gates by name 〔T10n0279 0354a03–0354a12〕, closing with 「說如是等百萬阿僧祇般若波羅蜜門」 tr. “they expounded a million asaṃkhyeya prajñā-pāramitā gates such as these” 〔0354a12〕. Among the fifteen names, the first two take illumining and stillness, the next four take the unturning and the unsubduable, the next four take the containing of treasury and ocean, and the last five take eloquence and according with beings. Chengguan puts one sense under each gate, one line for each of the fifteen 〔T35n1735 0934c27–0935a04〕.

(v) The parallel series of the nine clauses of 「無分別」 tr. “without discrimination” — in the passage of humbling himself and pointing to the superior, after 「得不思議功德寶藏」 tr. “they have obtained the inconceivable treasury of merit and virtue” the scripture text sets down nine clauses in a row, all turning upon 「無分別」 tr. “without discrimination”: entering the ocean of the Tathāgata’s body without discrimination, receiving the unsurpassed cloud of Dharma without discrimination, cultivating the equipment of merit and virtue without discrimination, raising the net of the practice of Samantabhadra without discrimination, entering the realm of samādhi without discrimination, being equal to the roots of goodness of bodhisattvas without discrimination, abiding where the Tathāgatas abide without discrimination, realizing the sameness of the three times without discrimination, abiding in the realm of universal eyes without discrimination 〔T10n0279 0354b03–0354b08〕. Chengguan judges the text into the general and the particular, saying 〔T35n1735 0935a28–0935b01〕「功德寶藏皆不思議,即是總句。 tr. “That the treasury of merit and virtue is in every way inconceivable is the general clause. From ‘entering without discrimination’ downward is the particular exposition. It is by being without discrimination that all dharmas are furnished, and therefore it is inconceivable.”

(vi) The contrast of one pellet of incense with kalpas as many as dust-motes — the greatest single contrast in this unit: what is asked about is the reward of ten storeys, and the cause given in answer is only the one matter of 「我奏樂音,并燒一丸香而以供養」 tr. “I made music sound, and I burned one pellet of incense as an offering” 〔T10n0279 0354a28〕, while its time lies far back, 「過佛剎微塵數劫」 tr. “beyond as many kalpas as there are dust-motes in a buddha-land” 〔0354a26〕. Chengguan puts a phrase upon this: 「一九之微因,願力故報勝。」 tr. “A cause as slight as a single pellet, whose reward is surpassing by the power of the vow.” 〔T35n1735 0935a23〕 Li Tongxuan for his part sets up the figure upon the incense, saying 「定香但燒一丸,五分法身周備。」 tr. “The incense of concentration, though only one pellet be burned, has the fivefold dharma-body complete in it.” 〔T36n1739 0970c01–c02〕

IV. Collation with Parallel Translations

The Chinese collation witnesses for the principal lines of this unit’s scripture text: Śikṣānanda T279 (the base text) · Buddhabhadra T278 (the Jin translation, the sixty-fascicle Avataṃsaka, the chapter Entering the Dharma Realm, chapter 34 · fascicle 48) · Prajñā T293 (the forty-fascicle Avataṃsaka · fascicle 11). All three witnesses carry this unit whole, and they are set out clause by clause below. In the sixty-fascicle version this friend’s name is 「法寶周羅」 tr. “Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā”, of which the eighty-fascicle version has no verbatim equivalent, and so the correspondence of the two witnesses is settled by taking the structure of the scene (calling the previous friend to mind → traveling on by stages → searching everywhere → taking him by the hand and showing him the house → the ten storeys one by one → asking about the conditions → answering with the original cause and the dedicating to three places → humbling himself and pointing to the superior → pointing to the next friend → taking leave), and not by searching the sixty-fascicle version with the wording of the eighty.

The forty-fascicle T293 likewise carries this friend’s passage whole. Its city is 「師子宮」 tr. “the Lion’s Palace”; the friend’s name in the sentence pointing forward in the preceding unit is 「尊法寶髻」 tr. “Honored Dharma-Jewel Topknot” and within this passage 「寶髻長者」 tr. “the elder Jewel Topknot”, so that it stands near the eighty-fascicle version and far from the sixty. The plainer divergences: the passage of calling merit to mind has twelve repetitions in the 40 and ten in the 80; for the gates of the house the 40 has besides the line 「於其四面各開二門」 tr. “on each of its four sides two gates were opened”, while its pavilion is 「高十層級,層開八門」 tr. “ten storeys in height, with eight gates opened on each storey”, which fills out the 80’s 「十層八門」 tr. “ten storeys and eight gates”; on the sixth storey the 40 has 「住不二法」 tr. “abiding in the non-dual Dharma” where the 80 has 「不住二法」 tr. “not abiding in the two opposed sides of things”; the names of the gates of wisdom are sixteen in the 40, fifteen in the 80, and eleven in the 60, of which the one name 「海藏」 tr. “the ocean-treasury” is wholly the same in the 80 and the 60 while the 40 has 「功德海藏」 tr. “the ocean-treasury of merit and virtue”; on the eighth storey the 40 sets out besides the four similes 「如幻如焰,如影如像,無有實性」 tr. “like an illusion, like a flame, like a shadow, like a reflection, without real nature”, which the 80 lacks; in the passage of the original cause the 40 sets out, after the sounding of music and the burning of incense, a long passage of the cloud of incense raining 「於閻浮提七日七夜」 tr. “over Jambudvīpa for seven days and seven nights” and of the music expounding the Dharma, where the 80 goes no further than the offering; the name of the gate in the 40 is 「無障礙願普遍莊嚴福德藏解脫門」 tr. “the liberation gate of the treasury of merit of the unobstructed vow that universally adorns”, in the 80 「無量福德寶藏解脫門」 tr. “the liberation gate of the treasury of measureless merit”, and in the 60 「滿足大願法門」 tr. “the Dharma gate of the fulfilling of great vows”; and the dwelling of the next friend in the 40 is the elder Universal Eye in the city of the Universally Pervading Gate in the land of Vine Root, in the 80 Universal Eye in the city of Universal Gate in the land of Vine Root, and in the 60 Universal Eye Exquisite Fragrance in the city of Universal Gate in the land of True Sharp Root. Recorded without adjudication.

Where the variants lie: (a) The objects called to mind: the 80 has ten layers of 「福德」 tr. “merit”, the 60 has nine layers of 「功德」 tr. “merit and virtue”, and the 60 besides gives the name of that gate as 「如意功德寶藏法門」 tr. “the Dharma gate of the jeweled treasury of merit at will”, a name the 80 does not give at the close of the preceding unit. (b) The place of the meeting: the 80 has 「在於市中」 tr. “right in the middle of the market”, the 60 has 「於道遇見」 tr. “meeting him upon the road” — Chengguan sets up upon the 「市中」 tr. “the market” of the eighty-fascicle version the figurative reading 「表處鬧忘懷,亂中常定故」 tr. “it shows that he dwells amid clamor and forgets the mind, that amid confusion he is constantly in concentration” 〔T35n1735 0934c09〕, and the sixty-fascicle version has no such text. (c) The friend’s name: the 80 has 「寶髻長者」 tr. “the elder Jewel Topknot”, the 60 has 「長者法寶周羅」 tr. “the elder Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā”. Recorded without adjudication.

I have already raised the mind of anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, but I do not yet know how a bodhisattva is to study the bodhisattva practice, or how he is to cultivate the bodhisattva path. It would be good, holy one, if you would expound for me the paths of the bodhisattvas — I would ride upon this path and go toward omniscience!”T10n0279 0353c12–c15
Buddhabhadra T278He said: 「大聖! “Great holy one! I have already raised the mind of anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, but I do not yet know how a bodhisattva is to study the bodhisattva practice and cultivate the bodhisattva path.”T09n0278 0706c18–c20

Where the variants lie: (a) The vocative: the 80 has 「聖者」 tr. “holy one”, the 60 has 「大聖」 tr. “great holy one”. (b) After the two questions the 80 has a further close, 「善哉聖者! “it would be good, holy one, if you would expound for me the paths of the bodhisattvas — I would ride upon this path and go toward omniscience”, which the 60 lacks. (c) The paying of respects: the 80 has 「頂禮其足,遶無數匝,合掌而立」 tr. “he bowed to his feet, circumambulated him numberless times, joined his palms, and stood”, the 60 has 「頭面禮足,合掌恭敬,於一面住」 tr. “he bowed his head and face to his feet, joined his palms in reverence, and stood to one side”. Recorded without adjudication.

Where the variants lie: The words shown are wholly the same in both witnesses (「善男子! “son of good family! just look at my house”), while the text introducing them differs — the 80 has 「示其舍宅,作如是言」 tr. “showing him his house, he said in this way”, whereas the 60 has simply 「將歸其家」 tr. “he brought him back to his house” and goes straight on to the speech. Recorded without adjudication.

Sentence 5 · What is given on the first four storeys

WitnessVerbatim, renderedSource
Śikṣānanda T279Sudhana went inside and observed one storey after another in order. He saw that the lowest storey was the giving of every kind of food and drink. He saw that the second storey was the giving of every kind of jeweled garment. He saw that the third storey was the giving of all jeweled ornaments. He saw that the fourth storey was the giving of every kind of attendant woman, and of all the finest and most exquisite jewels.T10n0279 0353c22–c25
Buddhabhadra T278At that time Sudhana saw that on the lowest layer fine viands were set out and given to all; he saw that on the second layer many kinds of jeweled garments were given; he saw that on the third layer all jeweled ornaments were bestowed; he saw that on the fourth layer the inner retinue was given, all of them walking in good conduct and skilled in speechT09n0278 0706c27–0707a01

Where the variants lie: (a) On the first storey the 60 has besides the narration 「設眾肴膳,惠施一切」 tr. “fine viands were set out and given to all”, where the 80 has only 「施諸飲食」 tr. “the giving of every kind of food and drink”. (b) On the fourth storey the 80 has 「施諸采女并及一切上妙珍寶」 tr. “the giving of every kind of attendant woman, and of all the finest and most exquisite jewels”, the 60 has 「施內眷屬,悉履善行,巧於語言」 tr. “the inner retinue was given, all of them walking in good conduct and skilled in speech” — the 80 has the item of jewels, which the 60 lacks, narrating instead the virtues of the retinue. Chengguan, upon these four storeys of the eighty-fascicle version, matches them with the first four grounds, saying 「一施食,顯初地行檀。 tr. “First, the giving of food, which shows the practice of giving on the first ground. The second ground, keeping the precepts, with shame and conscience for its garment. The third ground, the practice of forbearance made its ornaments. The fourth ground, the factors of the path made the inner retinue, vigor being what is precious.” 〔T35n1735 0934c23–0934c26〕 Recorded without adjudication.

(b) The name of the next friend: the 80 has 「普眼」 tr. “Universal Eye”, the 60 has 「普眼妙香」 tr. “Universal Eye Exquisite Fragrance”. V. Scriptural Grounds of Sectarian Doctrine (the doctrinal eye)

(i) Assigned to the practice free of delusion and confusion — concentration aided by wisdom, in stillness nothing left unilluminated. This unit is assigned to the fifth of the ten practices. Why should this friend answer to this practice? The Yanyi chao glosses it, fastening it to the mutual aid of concentration and wisdom:

tr. “As for the gloss, ‘the fifth, Dharma-Jewel Topknot, assigned to the practice free of delusion and confusion’: concentration is aided by wisdom, so that in stillness nothing is left unilluminated and in movement there is no departing from quiet, and this is named freedom from delusion and confusion.”

And as for why the scripture text has Sudhana see this elder in the market, Chengguan sets up a figure upon it:

tr. “Second, from ‘he saw this elder’ downward, is the seeing, the paying of respects, and the inquiring. That he is seen in the market shows that he dwells amid clamor and forgets the mind, that amid confusion he is constantly in concentration.”

Li Tongxuan agrees in direction, his text running thus, saying 「市中而見者、明寂亂等也。」 tr. “That he is seen in the market makes clear that stillness and confusion are equal.” 〔T36n1739 0970a29–0970b01〕, and he sets up the principal and its companions for this practice: 「此一段是第五離癡亂行,以禪波羅蜜為主,餘九為伴。」 tr. “This passage is the fifth, the practice free of delusion and confusion, with the perfection of meditation for its principal and the other nine for its companions.” 〔T36n1739 0970c08–0970c10〕

(ii) The three senses of the ten storeys — figuring the ten grounds · figuring the ten practices · figuring no position at all. The bone of this unit is the ten storeys, and as for what the ten storeys figure, Chengguan sets up not one sense but three. The first sense matches them with the ten grounds:

tr. “Within the particular section, the ten storeys have three senses. First, they figure the ten grounds. First, the giving of food, which shows the practice of giving on the first ground. The second ground, keeping the precepts, with shame and conscience for its garment. The third ground, the practice of forbearance made its ornaments. The fourth ground, the factors of the path made the inner retinue, vigor being what is precious. The fifth ground, plain in the text. The sixth ground, since wisdom is made manifest.” 〔T35n1735 0934c23–0934c26〕

The four storeys above these are fastened severally from the seventh ground to the ground of the Tathāgata:

tr. “The seventh ground has a surpassing practice and knows every kind of teaching, and so it is said to obtain the forbearance of the echo. Within the eighth storey two positions are held: first, the effortless spiritual powers of the eighth ground, the mastery over the three kinds of world. Second, the Dharma master of the ninth ground, able to expound with a single voice. The ninth storey too has two positions, since the tenth ground and equal awakening may both be taken as one birth. The tenth storey is the ground of the Tathāgata.” 〔T35n1735 0935a05–0935a09〕

The second sense matches them with the ten practices, and makes clear how they can figure both at once:

tr. “Second, they figure the ten practices, since the ten practices are the ten perfections. The first seven are plain in the text; the eighth, since the spiritual powers and the rest are accomplished by great vows; the ninth, bound to one more birth, since strength is the highest; the tenth, since only upon reaching the Tathāgata’s knowledge is it full. This is the present position gathering in all positions of itself; and in gathering in the ten grounds it gathers in all the later positions.” 〔T35n1735 0935a09–0935a13〕

The third sense does not match them with positions at all, but takes only the growing more excellent by stages:

tr. “Third, they figure no position at all; it is only that this bodhisattva, bringing his practice to meet capacities, manifests a dwelling of surpassing recompense that grows more excellent by stages.” 〔T35n1735 0935a16–0935a17〕

(iii) The three senses of the eight gates — the eightfold right path · the eight consciousnesses · the four gates of doctrine and principle. For the number of the eight gates too, Chengguan sets up three senses:

tr. “As for the ten storeys and eight gates, it is like the form of an eight-sided pagoda; the storeys and the gates have three senses each, the storeys being explained in the separate section. As for the three senses of the gates: first, taking it broadly as the path cultivated, the eightfold right path is made the gates, since the eightfold right path leads into all the positions. Second, taking it as the path relied upon, the eight consciousnesses are made the gates, since it is within the eye faculty that one enters right concentration; and if the faculty is able to enter, the object may be known. Third, taking it as the doctrine that reveals the principle, it is the four propositions entering the Dharma. Doctrine and principle have four each, and so there are eight gates.” 〔T35n1735 0934c15–0934c21〕

The gaining and the losing under the third sense Chengguan further sorts by the four defamations:

tr. “That is: if the intent be lost, then existence and emptiness are both obliterated, and it becomes the four defamations; if the intent be gained, they lead one in, and all alike are called gates. To seek in the doctrine and gain understanding is the four gates of doctrine; to gain understanding in the principle is the four gates of principle.” 〔T35n1735 0934c21–0934c23〕

Upon this the Yanyi chao opens a further road, matching the keeping and obliterating of the four gates to make eight:

tr. “As for the gloss, ‘to seek in the doctrine and gain understanding is the four gates of doctrine’ and the rest: it is only by taking the expression and the purport that two kinds of four gates are made, and by taking the doctrine it is the practice of faith, and by taking the principle it is the practice of Dharma. And if we follow the new scripture, which says ‘two gates on each face’ and therefore has eight gates, then it may equally be by the difference of keeping and obliterating in the four gates that eight are made.”

Its closing line is precisely the pivot of the eight gates:

tr. “Gain the intent and they are gates; lose the intent and these eight are not gates either.” 〔T36n1736 0676b21〕

Li Tongxuan takes straightway the single sense of the eightfold right path, saying 「四方都八也,明八正道行也。」 tr. “The four quarters make eight in all, which makes clear the practice of the eightfold right path.” 〔T36n1739 0970b17–0970b18〕

(iv) One position gathering in the positions — the present position gathering in all ten. Chengguan takes the ten storeys as figuring two senses at once, and returns them to the axis of one position gathering in all positions, pointing back besides to the earlier Ocean Banner:

tr. “Taking the ten storeys as figuring the two senses at once is as with Ocean Banner, where the present position had barely finished gathering in the ten positions before the attainment of buddhahood was spoken of. The earlier was assigned to the sixth position gathering them in, this to the fifth position gathering them in. The earlier gathered them by way of the direct recompense, this gathers them by way of the circumstantial recompense — both showing the position to be surpassing what went before.” 〔T35n1735 0935a13–0935a16〕

Li Tongxuan agrees in the main, his text running thus:

“The storeyed pavilions of ten storeys belonging to this elder gather in altogether the ten abodes, the ten practices, the ten dedications, the ten grounds, the eleventh ground, and the buddha-fruit, all comprehended together, since their substance is the meditation of the Dharma realm that is without support and without nature” 〔T36n1739 0970c11–0970c13〕

(v) The dedicating to three places matched against the reward of the ten storeys. The cause given in answer is only the dedicating to three places, while the reward manifested is the ten storeys, and Chengguan matches each place with its fruit:

“In the fourth, the questioning and answering about the conditions, there is first the question and then the answer. As for the dedicating and directing to three places, being free of poverty draws the reward of the first four storeys. The two fruits, the second and the third, are the latter six layers. A cause as slight as a single pellet, whose reward is surpassing by the power of the vow. It further signifies that all practices merged together give rise to the turning toward buddhahood, and then in any single practice there is nothing not furnished. What fruit would not be climbed to?” 〔T35n1735 0935a21–0935a25〕

(vi) The gloss on the name treasury — the jewels of the world and the three jewels heaped within the ten layers. The first line of the humbling of himself and the pointing to the superior gives the name of the gate, and Chengguan glosses the sense by the name:

tr. “Fourth, from ‘son of good family’ downward, is the humbling of himself and the pointing to the superior. As for his humbling himself by saying ‘bodhisattva’ and so forth: the jewels of the world and the three jewels are stored up and heaped within the ten layers, and so it is called a treasury of jewels. Its use is constant and inexhaustible, and this is measureless merit.”

The text of the one part that points to the superior Chengguan judges into the general and the particular, with being without discrimination for its pivot:

tr. “Afterward, in the pointing to the superior, it is by the dharma itself that the surpassing is shown. That the treasury of merit and virtue is in every way inconceivable is the general clause. From ‘entering without discrimination’ downward is the particular exposition. It is by being without discrimination that all dharmas are furnished, and therefore it is inconceivable. The last two may be understood.”

Li Tongxuan for his part glosses, by the name of the gate, why he is styled Jewel Topknot:

tr. “It makes clear the gate of concentration accompanying practice, unobstructed in quiescence and in function, able to gather in merit and knowledge together with great kindness and great compassion, the four means of gathering, and the four measureless dharmas, all held within it; and therefore this elder is styled Jewel Topknot, signifying that this gate of concentration accompanying his practice is gathered altogether into a topknot, this being the sense of it.” 〔T36n1739 0970c05–0970c08〕

VI. Divergent Interpretations of the Commentators

Chengguan, Huayan jing shu T35n1735 · Yanyi chao T36n1736 (glossing the eighty-fascicle version clause by clause · the principal)

tr. “The fifth, Dharma-Jewel Topknot, assigned to the practice free of delusion and confusion. Of the six, the first passage may be understood.” 〔T35n1735 0934c07〕

The four parts of the conferring of his own Dharma realm: 〔T35n1735 0934c10–0934c12〕「於中四:一執手將引,即授法方便,顯加行智歸正證故。 tr. “Within it there are four: first, taking him by the hand and leading him on, which is the skillful means of conferring the Dharma, showing that the knowledge of preparatory practice returns to direct realization. Second, from ‘he said in this way’ downward, is the showing of where he dwells, which is the direct conferring of the Dharma realm.”

The sense given to each of the fifteen gates of wisdom: 〔T35n1735 0934c27–0935a05〕「文中三:初總。 tr. “In the text there are three: first the summary. Next, from ‘that is to say’ downward, the separate display of the fifteen gates: first, the illumining substance is itself still, and there is nothing it does not embrace; second, the illumining that is itself stillness leaves no capacity unexamined; third, outer conditions do not turn it; fourth, inward illumination seeks nothing; fifth, the objects of delusion do not break it; sixth, it breaks all delusions everywhere; seventh, it holds surpassing virtue within and is most profound; eighth, it sees the Dharma realm universally and without obstruction; ninth, one is itself inexhaustible; tenth, skillful in transforming without bound; eleventh, inwardly realizing the world; twelfth, outwardly setting forth surpassing eloquence; thirteenth, bending to accord with what creatures desire; fourteenth, fact and principle interlaced; fifteenth, contemplating conditions and conferring the Dharma. Afterward, from ‘they expounded such as these’ downward, the general conclusion.”

The order of the ten storeys under the third sense: 「十顯無盡,初四以物施,後後漸難;次二集法施,前淺後深;次二得法,初陜後廣;後二現勝德,先因後果。 tr. “The ten show inexhaustibility: the first four are the giving of goods, each later one growing harder; the next two are the gathering for the giving of Dharma, the first shallow and the second deep; the next two are the obtaining of the Dharma, the first narrow and the second broad; the last two manifest surpassing virtue, the first the cause and the second the fruit. Taking together the dharmas of cause and fruit and practice and position in the three senses above, they are made the elder’s house.” 〔T35n1735 0935a17–0935a21〕

The four propositions of the eight gates in the Chao: 「如一有門,見心妙有而入法界,則是有門;若取於有,即拂有相,名非有門。」 tr. “Take the one gate of existence: seeing the exquisite existence of mind and entering the Dharma realm, this is the gate of existence; but if one grasps at existence, then the mark of existence is swept away, and it is named the gate of non-existence.” 〔T36n1736 0676b09–0676b11〕

Li Tongxuan, Xin Huayan jing lun T36n1739 (a different track of figures)

The gloss on the city’s name: 「三示善知識所居城者,城名師子宮,此約化主立名。 tr. “Third, showing the city where the good friend dwells: the city is named the Lion’s Palace, which is named by taking the one who transforms as its lord. The lion is the sense of fearlessness, making clear that in this fifth practice free of delusion and confusion meditative concentration is made the palace.” 〔T36n1739 0970a10–0970a13〕

The gloss on the friend’s name: 「四有長者號法寶髻者,表此長者所行禪行是法界體用自在無礙禪,總攝十波羅蜜行,八正道咸在其中。」 tr. “Fourth, that there is an elder styled Dharma-Jewel Topknot signifies that the meditative practice this elder performs is the meditation of the Dharma realm, masterful and unobstructed in substance and function, gathering in altogether the practice of the ten perfections, with the eightfold right path all held within it.” 〔T36n1739 0970a13–0970a16〕

The figure of the taking of the hand: 「執善財手者,引接也。」 tr. “As for his taking Sudhana by the hand, it is drawing him in and receiving him.” 〔T36n1739 0970b06〕

The materials of the house matched one by one with the perfections: 「舍宅清淨光明真金所成者,約位以禪波羅蜜為主,餘九為伴。 tr. “That the house is pure and full of light and made of true gold is, by position, the perfection of meditation for its principal and the other nine for its companions; it makes clear that the substance of concentration is white, pure, and stainless, and that its recompense comes to be light.” tr. “That the deep-blue beryl jewel forms the storeyed pavilions is the making of vigor out of the substance of meditation, so that contemplative illumination grows the brighter, purer, and cleaner.” tr. “Because meditation is made the practice, all dharmas are upheld and sustained.” 〔T36n1739 0970b14–0970b15〕

The ten storeys matched with the ten perfections: 「十層樓閣,亦准此十波羅蜜,從下向上排之,自有次第。」 tr. “The storeyed pavilions of ten storeys are likewise to be taken by these ten perfections, ranked from the bottom upward, and they have an order of their own.” tr. “The tenth storey makes clear the tenth perfection of knowledge, wherein the causes and fruits of the buddhas of the three times are gathered into a full circle in a single thought, and the transforming of beings and the entering of nirvāṇa are all alike unshifting.” 〔T36n1739 0970b18–0970b20〕

The figure of the original cause: 「明得定體,以十住位中已得定體故。」 tr. “It makes clear the obtaining of the substance of concentration, since in the positions of the ten abodes the substance of concentration has already been obtained.” tr. “The incense of concentration, though only one pellet be burned, has the fivefold dharma-body complete in it.” 〔T36n1739 0970c01–0970c02〕

Fazang, Tanxuan ji T35n1733 (under the sixty-fascicle form of the name · Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā)

What Fazang glosses is the sixty-fascicle 「法寶周羅」 tr. “Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā”, so that a search under the eighty-fascicle name 「法寶髻」 tr. “Dharma-Jewel Topknot” returns nothing found, while the dedicated gloss in fact stands.

The outline: 「第五離癡亂行中,初舉法勸修內」 tr. “Within the fifth practice, that of leaving delusion and confusion: first, within the raising of the Dharma and the exhortation to cultivate” 〔T35n1733 0465c25〕; and at the close 「第五行竟」 tr. “The fifth practice is finished” 〔T35n1733 0466c06〕

The gloss on the city’s name: 「此宅在彼城,城依宅號,故以為名。」 tr. “This house stands in that city, and the city takes its title from the house; hence it is so named.” 〔T35n1733 0465c27–0465c28〕

The gloss on the friend’s name, with the Indian text cited: 「長者法寶周羅者,周羅此云頂髻,則以法成人。 tr. “As for the elder Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā: cūḍā is rendered here as topknot, and so it is by the Dharma that the person is completed, the jewel being the topknot. The Indian text says there is an elder of the Dharma named Jewel Cūḍā. It shows the mark of his working of concentration as precious and supremely honored.” 〔T35n1733 0465c28–0466a02〕

The four parts of the conferring of his own Dharma realm: 〔T35n1733 0466a06–0466a09〕「第四「時彼長者」〔T35n1733 0466a06〕下授己法界,於中四:一執手等是授方便,則加行也;二遍觀等正見法界,則正證也;三問法因緣,則後得也;四我唯等,結己所知,即立名也。」 tr. “Fourth, from ‘at that time that elder’ downward, is the conferring of his own Dharma realm, within which there are four: first, the taking of the hand and the rest is the skillful means of conferring the Dharma, that is, preparatory practice; second, the observing throughout and the rest is the right seeing of the Dharma realm, which is direct realization; third, the asking about the conditions of the Dharma, which is subsequently attained knowledge; fourth, ‘I know only’ and the rest concludes what he knows for himself, which is the setting up of the name.”

The three glosses on the ten layers: 「此相難定,略作三釋。 tr. “This aspect is hard to settle, and three glosses are given in brief. First, following the ancient masters it is said: the ten layers are the ten grounds.” tr. “Second, glossing these ten layers again: they are altogether the positions of these ten practices, beginning from the giving of food, which is named the practice of joy, on to the tenth, all the tathāgatas filling it, which is the practice of the real — because within one position all positions are gathered in.” “Third, glossing again: it is not taken by position at all; it is only that this bodhisattva, bringing his practice to meet capacities, manifests a dwelling of surpassing track and support, and so ten are spoken of to show inexhaustibility” 〔T35n1733 0466b14–0466b16〕

tr. “Because the eight noble paths lead throughout into entry, they are made the eight gates. Or else the four means of gathering and the four measureless minds are likewise made the eight gates.” 〔T35n1733 0466a14–0466a15〕

The gates of wisdom (ten named in the heading, eleven in the list): 「二所謂下別顯十門,一照則寂、二寂即照、三外緣不轉、四內照離染故、五體堅、六用廣、七含勝德、八見法界、九多巧便、十稱物機、十一約喻顯,是增數故也。」 tr. “Second, from ‘that is to say’ downward, ten gates are displayed separately: first, illumining is itself stillness; second, stillness is itself illumining; third, outer conditions do not turn it; fourth, inward illumination is free of defilement; fifth, its substance is firm; sixth, its working is broad; seventh, it holds surpassing virtue; eighth, it sees the Dharma realm; ninth, its skillful means are many; tenth, it answers to the capacities of creatures; eleventh, it is shown by simile — this being an increase in the number.” 〔T35n1733 0466a20–0466a24〕

The conclusion, the name of the Dharma gate: 〔T35n1733 0466b25–0466b26〕「四「我唯」〔T35n1733 0466b25〕下結法名字,謂宿願所求之三處稱遂成滿之十重,故名滿足大願法門。」 tr. “Fourth, from ‘I know only’ downward, he concludes with the name of the Dharma: the three places sought by his former vow are answered and fulfilled in the ten layers, and hence it is named the Dharma gate of the fulfilling of great vows.”; and he cites besides the Indian text, 「得菩薩解脫,名無礙願莊嚴道場」 tr. “he obtained a bodhisattva liberation named the unobstructed vow that adorns the ground of awakening” 〔T35n1733 0466b27〕, glossing it himself, 「宿願徹微,名無礙願」 tr. “his former vow penetrates to the subtlest, and this is named the unobstructed vow” 〔T35n1733 0466b28–0466b29〕

Zhiyan, Souxuan ji T35n1732 (under the sixty-fascicle form of the name · Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā)

What Zhiyan glosses is likewise the sixty-fascicle 「法寶周羅」 tr. “Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā”, and the gloss dedicated to this unit stands.

Raising the position and the name of the gate: 「第十五離癡亂行菩薩位,長者名法寶周羅,入滿足大願法門。」 tr. “The bodhisattva of the fifteenth, the practice of leaving delusion and confusion: the elder of this position is named Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā, and he enters the Dharma gate of the fulfilling of great vows.” 〔T35n1732 0094c03–0094c05〕

The outline in three parts: 〔T35n1732 0094c05–0094c06〕「初勸教、二「時善財」〔T35n1732 0094c05〕下進入、三「執善財手」〔T35n1732 0094c06〕下正入。」 tr. “First, the exhortation of the teaching; second, from ‘at that time Sudhana’ downward, the entering; third, from ‘he took Sudhana by the hand’ downward, the direct entry.”

The gathering by the circumstantial and by the direct recompense: 「初文有二:初歎以手引入家,觀方便耳;二正觀。 tr. “The first passage has two: first, the praise of his being led into the house by the hand, which is only the skillful means of observing; second, the direct observing. Within the observing, first is the gathering of benefit by the circumstantial recompense, of which two may be understood; afterward is the gathering of benefit by the direct recompense.” 〔T35n1732 0094c13–0094c15〕

The ten layers of the direct recompense and the virtue of the eighth: 「正中有十重,第八重中,初神通等三世間八地德;次詣一切佛受持等明九地德」 tr. “Within the direct there are ten layers. Within the eighth layer, first the spiritual powers and the rest are the virtue of the eighth ground, with mastery over the three kinds of world; next, going to all the buddhas and holding what they teach and the rest makes clear the virtue of the ninth ground” 〔T35n1732 0094c15–0094c17〕

The tenth layer, the fruit contained within the cause: 「第十重如來滿中等,此即因中具果法門也。」 tr. “The tenth layer, the tathāgatas filling it and the rest, is precisely the Dharma gate of the fruit contained within the cause.” 〔T35n1732 0094c17–0094c18〕

Looking up and pointing to the superior: 「仰推中,初別、次結,可知。」 tr. “Within the looking up and pointing to the superior, first the separate and next the conclusion, which may be understood.” 〔T35n1732 0094c18〕

Recorded without adjudication

As for the outline of this unit, Chengguan makes six parts (seeking in accord with the teaching · seeing, paying respects, and inquiring · conferring his own Dharma realm · humbling himself and pointing to the superior, the latter two matters not being set up as separate outline headings in his gloss), while Li Tongxuan does not follow the six parts but opens ten gates of his own under the direct entry into the Dharma gate of the present position (calling the teaching to mind and increasing merit · traveling south by stages · searching everywhere · seeing him in the market · taking him by the hand and going to his dwelling · having him observe his house · asking about the cause he cultivated · telling of the cause of the past · setting forth as well the dedicating to three places · advancing by way of pointing to virtue) — the two commentators differ both in the number of their divisions and in the frame they rest upon. As for what the ten storeys figure, Chengguan sets up three senses (figuring the ten grounds · figuring the ten practices · figuring no position at all), while Li Tongxuan has the single sense of matching the ten perfections ranked from the bottom upward. As for the sense of the eight gates, Chengguan sets up three (the eightfold right path · the eight consciousnesses · the four gates of doctrine and principle), the Yanyi chao further opens the four gates into eight by their being kept or obliterated, and Li Tongxuan takes only the single sense of the eightfold right path. As for the gloss on the friend’s name, Chengguan glosses it by the name of the gate, 「世寶三寶蘊積十重之中,故云寶藏」 tr. “the jewels of the world and the three jewels are stored up and heaped within the ten layers, and so it is called a treasury of jewels”, while Li Tongxuan glosses it by the gate of concentration, 「總為髻攝法義」 tr. “gathered altogether into a topknot, this being the sense of it”. As for the gloss on the city’s name, Chengguan gives no separate gloss, while Li Tongxuan makes it 「師子宮」 tr. “the Lion’s Palace” and takes the sense of fearlessness. As for the figure of the original cause, Chengguan takes 「一九之微因,願力故報勝」 tr. “a cause as slight as a single pellet, whose reward is surpassing by the power of the vow”, while Li Tongxuan takes 「定香但燒一丸,五分法身周備」 tr. “the incense of concentration, though only one pellet be burned, has the fivefold dharma-body complete in it”. Fazang’s Tanxuan ji and Zhiyan’s Souxuan ji both set up a dedicated gloss under the sixty-fascicle form of the name 「法寶周羅」 tr. “Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā”: Fazang sets up three glosses on the ten layers (the ten grounds · the ten practices · not taken by position at all), broadly answering to Chengguan’s three senses though the wording differs, takes the eight noble paths for the eight gates and sets out besides the four means of gathering and the four measureless minds, names ten gates of wisdom in his heading while listing eleven, and under the name of the gate cites the Indian text; Zhiyan sets up three parts (the exhortation of the teaching · the entering · the direct entry), divides the direct entry into the gathering by the circumstantial recompense and the gathering by the direct recompense, and within the ten layers of the direct recompense marks the eighth layer as the virtue of the eighth ground with mastery over the three kinds of world and the tenth layer as the fruit contained within the cause. All these divergent glosses are settled teachings of the ancient worthies, and are recorded here.

VII. Cross-Reading and Lineage

For the text of this unit the chain of lineage returns directly from cross-readings already made by the ancient worthies:

  • Zhiyan, Huayan jing kongmu zhang T45n1870: the order-of-succession table of the good friends lists this friend as the sixteenth — 「十六長者名法寶周羅」 tr. “the sixteenth, an elder named Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā” 〔T45n1870 0589a12〕. Above and below him stand the friends before and after (the fifteenth named Nectar Dharma Crown · the seventeenth named Universal Eye Exquisite Fragrance), which joins with the preceding unit, the householder Bright Wisdom, and the following unit, the elder Universal Eye, of the present text. This is a record of succession, not a gloss on the sense. The same work has besides one place where this friend is taken directly as attestation: Zhiyan marks out 「第五約一乘義者」 tr. “fifth, taking it by the sense of the one vehicle” 〔T45n1870 0561a27〕, and below it says 「又在第十地。 tr. “Further, on the tenth ground there is also a separate attainment of buddhahood, as is said in the section on the good friend Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā. Why so? Because the sense of the one vehicle, in order to draw in the three vehicles and the lesser vehicle and the rest, has them attain buddhahood alike in the lower positions and in the lower bodies.” 〔T45n1870 0561a29〕 — this is Zhiyan’s own language of doctrinal classification, recorded without adjudication.
  • The treatises of the Huayan house: the four works Huayan jing zhigui T45n1871 · Wujiao zhang T45n1866 · Shixuan men T45n1868 · Fajie xuanjing T45n1883, searched for 「法寶髻」 tr. “Dharma-Jewel Topknot” and 「法寶周羅」 tr. “Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā”, all return nothing found 〔查無〕.
  • The consciousness-only axis: the five works Shidi jing lun (the Treatise on the Ten Grounds Sūtra) T26n1522 · Cheng weishi lun T31n1585 · She dacheng lun T31n1594 · Yogācārabhūmi T30n1579 · Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra T16n0676, searched for 「法寶髻」 tr. “Dharma-Jewel Topknot” and 「法寶周羅」 tr. “Dharma-Jewel Cūḍā”, all return nothing found 〔查無〕. This unit is not the chapter on the ten grounds, and no separate consciousness-only chain is set up for it.
  • Within the window of this unit Chengguan’s Shu raises no quotation of his own from other scriptures or treatises — the outline text of this unit glosses purely the sense of the ten storeys and eight gates, and there is no outward citation of the kind 「《淨名》云」 tr. “the Vimalakīrti says” or 「《智論》云」 tr. “the Treatise on Wisdom says”. The lack is recorded as it stands.
