Ninety-eight thousand great bhikṣus; hundreds of thousands of millions of bodhisattvas; 580 million youths; tens of thousands of devas, dragon kings, yakṣas, and garuḍa kings; seers from mountains, forests, rivers, and seas; kings of many realms; queens and consorts; and men and women of pure trust all come together on Vulture Peak. Through an assembly of immense scope, the “Introduction” raises a question about where hearing the Dharma begins.
It unfolds its answer as many conditions converging at once.
First, People Willing to Come
The great śrāvakas have exhausted their afflictions and are well disciplined like great elephant kings. The bodhisattvas possess the majestic virtue of great dragon kings and benefit the world through vast vows, great patience, and great compassion. The youths deeply trust the Great Vehicle; the devas vow that the True Dharma will not be cut off; the dragon kings delight in receiving, upholding, and praising it; the yakṣas protect it with profound intent; and the other assemblies wish to read, recite, copy, and circulate it.
They come from different positions in life and bring different directions of practice. The sūtra does not blur their differences into a vague “multitude.” List after list of names and layer after layer of numbers show that the space before the Dharma seat can hold those already liberated, those still in training, those who have made vast vows, protectors of the Dharma, and those just beginning with pure trust. An assembly able to hear is formed by these differences together.
In the afternoon, each group goes in turn to the Buddha, bows at his feet, circumambulates him three times to the right, then withdraws and sits to one side. Before the great śrāvakas and bodhisattvas approach the Dharma seat, they first emerge from samādhi; before each group sits, it settles the body through reverence. Hearing the Dharma is already expressed in the willingness to go forward and sit reverently before the ears encounter a single phrase.
Then, a Mind Willing to Hear
Once the multitudes have gathered like clouds, they join palms, look up at the World-Honored One without turning their gaze away, and wish and delight to hear the excellent, wondrous Dharma. The sūtra places this “wish to hear” before the Buddha’s verses, giving hearing a clear direction of mind.
This mind is not waiting passively. It brings attention, reverence, and joy, and it is prepared to turn what it hears into reading, recitation, reception, upholding, copying, and circulation. Those present do not arrive with the same identity, yet they can face the Dharma with a shared wish. Their differences remain, but their direction has converged.
The Buddha, too, emerges from samādhi in the afternoon, observes the assembly, and then proclaims verses. The multitude comes, sits, and wishes to hear; the Buddha emerges, observes, and teaches. Hearing the Dharma is not a one-sided transfer of content, but a meeting of speaker and listeners where the requisite conditions have matured.
Twenty-Four Verses Gather the Whole Sūtra into One Cluster
The Buddha first calls the wondrous Dharma of Golden Light the supreme king of sūtras, profound and difficult to hear, the sphere of the buddhas. He then names Akṣobhya in the east, Jeweled Appearance in the south, Amitāyus in the west, and Sound of the Heavenly Drum in the north as its joint protectors. From there, the verses move through repentance that extinguishes offenses, purification of evil karma, removal of suffering, production of happiness, all-knowing knowledge, and the adornment of virtue.
Nor do they turn away from sentient beings’ suffering. Incomplete bodies and faculties, diminished lifespans, anger from friends, separation from relatives, loss of possessions, harmful sorcery, oppressive sorrow, and evil dreams are named one by one. Profound Dharma does not leave these situations behind to construct another world. Where suffering is present, it teaches people to bathe, put on clean clothes, read and recite with undistracted attention, hear and uphold the sūtra, and make offerings of food, drink, incense, and flowers with a compassionate mind.
The Four Heavenly Kings, their ministers and retinues, yakṣas, goddesses, river deities, mother-deities, earth deities, Brahmā, Śakra, dragon kings, kinnaras, garuḍa kings, and asuras are also said to guard those who uphold the sūtra. In the first half of the Introduction, the multitude moves toward the Buddha; in the verses, the Dharma protectors move toward the person who upholds the sūtra. The assembly extends from Vulture Peak to every place where someone reads, recites, and upholds it.
From Hearing to Enabling Others to Hear
The final verses place hearing beside teaching. A person may hear the sūtra and then proclaim it to others; one may rejoice in another’s wholesome action or establish offerings. Hearing the Dharma is not stored away in one person’s memory. Through speech, practice, joy, and offerings, it can keep moving.
Thus “Thus have I heard” at the chapter’s opening, the assembly’s wish and delight to hear, and the profound teaching that is difficult to hear in the final verses become a single thread. Direct hearing gives the Dharma a line of transmission. The wish to hear opens the present encounter. Its rarity teaches people to treasure the conditions they have received. Reading, recitation, upholding, and teaching others then allow this encounter to continue.
In the next chapter, the bodhisattva Wonderful Banner, alone in a quiet place, reflects on why the Buddha’s lifespan should be so short. The wish to hear gathered among the multitude in this chapter becomes one person’s searching question in the next. The four buddhas first named in this chapter’s verses then appear in Wonderful Banner’s chamber. Hearing the Dharma unfolds through coming, wishing, and receiving, and it continues through honest inquiry.
Returning to the opening question, the “Introduction” offers no slogan. It offers a picture of conditions meeting: people willing to come, bodily reverence, attentive and joyful minds, a teacher who observes the listeners, and lives willing to receive, practice, and transmit what is taught. When these lines meet, the sūtra exceeds the words on its pages. An assembly of hearing that can continue has already taken shape.

A vernacular rendering of Yijing’s Tang translation of The Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King, fascicle one, “Introduction,” Chapter 1.
The Time, Place, and Assembly of Great Bhikṣus
Thus have I heard directly:
At one time, the Bhagavān was dwelling at the summit of Vulture Peak in Rājagṛha, within the most purified and exceedingly profound dharma-realm. This is the sphere of the buddhas and the dwelling place of the Tathāgata.
Together with the Buddha were ninety-eight thousand great bhikṣus. They were all arhats, well disciplined like great elephant kings. Every outflow had been eliminated, and they had no further afflictions. Their minds were well liberated, and their wisdom was well liberated. What had to be done was complete; every heavy burden had been laid down; they had attained their own benefit; every fetter that perpetuates existence had been exhausted; and they had attained great mastery. They abided in pure discipline, applied skillful means well, adorned themselves with wisdom, realized the eight liberations, and had reached the farther shore.
Those named among them were Venerable Ājñāta Kauṇḍinya, Venerable Aśvajit, Venerable Vāṣpa, Venerable Mahānāma, Venerable Bhadrika, Mahākāśyapa, Uruvilvā-Kāśyapa, Gayā-Kāśyapa, Nadī-Kāśyapa, Śāriputra, and Mahāmaudgalyāyana. Of those named, Ānanda alone still remained at the stage of training.
In the afternoon, these great śrāvakas each emerged from samādhi and went to the Buddha. They bowed their heads at the Buddha’s feet, circumambulated him three times to the right, then withdrew and sat to one side.
The Assembly of Bodhisattva Mahāsattvas
There were also hundreds of thousands of millions of bodhisattva mahāsattvas assembled together. They possessed great majestic virtue like great dragon kings. Their renown was heard everywhere, and they were known by the multitude. Their giving and discipline were pure, and they constantly delighted in upholding them. They had diligently cultivated patience over measureless eons without growing weary, passed beyond every meditative absorption, kept mindfulness clearly present, and opened the gate of wisdom. They skillfully cultivated every means and freely exercised subtle spiritual powers. They had attained dhāraṇī, and their eloquence was inexhaustible. They had severed every affliction, and all accumulation and defilement had disappeared. Before long they would attain all-aspect knowledge.
They could subdue the armies of Māra, sound the Dharma drum, overcome the various non-Buddhist paths, and cause their followers to give rise to purified minds. They could turn the wondrous wheel of Dharma and liberate humans and devas. They had adorned the buddha-lands of the ten directions, and no sentient being in any of the six courses failed to receive benefit. They had attained great wisdom, fully possessed great patience, abided in a mind of great compassion, and possessed great, indestructible strength. They had long served the buddhas without entering parinirvāṇa, and had aroused vast vows that would not cease until the end of the future. In the presence of the buddhas, they had deeply planted pure causes; with respect to the dharmas of past, present, and future, they had awakened to the patience of non-arising; and they had passed beyond the spheres practiced by the two vehicles of śrāvakas and solitary realizers.
With great skillfulness, they taught and transformed the world. They could expound every teaching of the Great Teacher. They had fully understood secret Dharma and profound emptiness and no longer had any doubt.
The names of these bodhisattvas were: Unobstructed Turning of the Dharma Wheel, Constantly Arousing the Mind to Turn the Dharma Wheel, Constant Vigor, Never Resting, Maitreya, Mañjuśrī, Avalokiteśvara, Sovereign King of Mastery in Dhāraṇī, King Adorned with Great Eloquence, King Mount Sumeru, King Profound Ocean, Jeweled Banner, Great Jeweled Banner, Kṣitigarbha, Ākāśagarbha, Sovereign Jeweled Hand, Vajrapāṇi, Power of Joy, Great Dharma Power, Great Adorning Light, Adornment of Great Golden Light, Pure Discipline, Constant Samādhi, Supremely Purified Wisdom, Firm Vigor, Mind Like Empty Space, Unbroken Great Vow, Bestowing Medicine, Healing the Illnesses of Affliction, King of Physicians, Lofty King of Joy, Attaining the Highest Prediction, Great Cloud Pure Light, Great Cloud Upholding Dharma, Great Cloud Renown Joy and Delight, Great Cloud Manifesting Boundless Renown, Great Cloud Lion’s Roar, Great Cloud Bull-King’s Roar, Great Cloud Auspiciousness, Great Cloud Jeweled Virtue, Great Cloud Sun Treasury, Great Cloud Moon Treasury, Great Cloud Starlight, Great Cloud Firelight, Great Cloud Lightning, Great Cloud Thunder Voice, Great Cloud Wisdom-Rain Filling Everywhere, Great Cloud King of Purified Rain, Great Cloud King of Flowering Trees, Great Cloud Blue-Lotus Fragrance, Great Cloud Cool Body of Precious Sandalwood Fragrance, Great Cloud Dispelling Darkness, and Great Cloud Breaking Cataracts.
This measureless assembly of great bodhisattvas likewise emerged from samādhi in the afternoon and went to the Buddha. They bowed their heads at the Buddha’s feet, circumambulated him three times to the right, then withdrew and sat to one side.
The Licchavi Youths and the Assembly of Devas
There were also 580 million Licchavi youths. Those named as leaders were the youths Lion Light, Lion Wisdom, Dharma-Given, Indra-Given, Great Light, Great Fierce, Buddha-Protected, Dharma-Protected, Saṅgha-Protected, Vajra-Protected, Space-Protected, Roar of Space, Jewel Treasury, and Auspicious Wondrous Treasury. They all abided in unsurpassed awakening and possessed profound trust and joy in the Great Vehicle. In the afternoon, each went to the Buddha, bowed his head at the Buddha’s feet, circumambulated him three times to the right, then withdrew and sat to one side.
There were also forty-two thousand devas. Those named as leaders were Joyful Vision, Joyful Delight, Sunlight, Moon-Crest, Bright Wisdom, Pure Wisdom of Space, Removing Affliction, and Auspiciousness. They had all made great vows to protect and uphold the Great Vehicle, perpetuating and flourishing the True Dharma so that it would never be cut off. In the afternoon, each went to the Buddha, bowed his head at the Buddha’s feet, circumambulated him three times to the right, then withdrew and sat to one side.
Dragon Kings, Yakṣas, and the Remaining Assemblies
There were also twenty-eight thousand dragon kings. Those named as leaders were the dragon kings Lotus, Elāpattra, Great Power, Great Roar, Small Wave, Bearer of Swift Waters, Golden Face, and Wish-Fulfilling. They constantly delighted in receiving and upholding the Dharma of the Great Vehicle, aroused profound trust, and praised and protected it. In the afternoon, each went to the Buddha, bowed his head at the Buddha’s feet, circumambulated him three times to the right, then withdrew and sat to one side.
There were also thirty-six thousand yakṣas, led by the Heavenly King Vaiśravaṇa. The yakṣas named were Ambā, Bearing Ambā, Lotus-Light Treasury, Lotus-Faced, Frowning Brow, Manifesting Great Terror, Earth-Shaking, and Devouring. All these yakṣas delighted in the True Dharma of the Tathāgata and protected it with profound intent, never growing weary or lax. In the afternoon, each went to the Buddha, bowed his head at the Buddha’s feet, circumambulated him three times to the right, then withdrew and sat to one side.
There were also forty-nine thousand garuḍa kings, led by King Fragrant-Elephant Power. In addition, there were gandharvas, asuras, kinnaras, and mahoragas; all the seers of mountains, forests, rivers, and seas; the assemblies of kings from the great realms, queens and consorts of the inner palaces, men and women of pure trust, and the multitudes of humans and devas. They all gathered like clouds at the Dharma assembly, wishing to protect the unsurpassed Great Vehicle and to read, recite, receive, uphold, copy, and circulate this sūtra. In the afternoon, each likewise went to the Buddha, bowed his or her head at the Buddha’s feet, circumambulated him three times to the right, then withdrew and sat to one side.
In this way, the śrāvakas, bodhisattvas, human and celestial multitudes, and the eight classes of dragons and spirits had all assembled. Each joined palms in utmost sincerity and reverence, looked up at the World-Honored One’s countenance without ever turning their gaze away, and earnestly wished and delighted to hear the excellent, wondrous Dharma.
The Buddha Emerges from Samādhi and Recites Twenty-Four Verses
At that time, the Bhagavān emerged from samādhi in the afternoon, observed the assembly, and proclaimed the following twenty-four verses:
Verse 1
The wondrous Dharma of Golden Light is the supreme king among all sūtras. Its meaning is exceedingly profound and difficult to hear; it is the sphere practiced by the buddhas.
Verse 2
I shall proclaim this sūtra to the assembled multitude. The four buddhas of the east, south, west, and north will also protect it together through their awe-inspiring spiritual power.
Verse 3
The four buddhas of the four directions are Venerable Akṣobhya in the east, Buddha Jeweled Appearance in the south, Buddha Amitāyus in the west, and Buddha Sound of the Heavenly Drum in the north.
Verse 4
I shall further proclaim the wondrous Dharma. Its auspicious Dharma of repentance is supreme among all forms of repentance; it can extinguish every offense and purely remove every kind of evil karma.
Verse 5
This wondrous Dharma can also dispel many sufferings and afflictions and constantly bestow measureless happiness. It is the basis of all-knowing knowledge and is adorned with every virtue.
Verse 6
Some beings have incomplete bodies and faculties, and their lives are about to diminish. Various inauspicious signs appear before them, and the deities that formerly protected them all depart.
Verse 7
Close friends harbor anger, and relatives all scatter and separate. People become estranged and discordant with one another, and precious possessions are dispersed and lost.
Verse 8
Inauspicious stars bring strange changes, or harmful sorcery invades. Sorrows may multiply, while many sufferings press upon them—
Verse 9
They see evil dreams in their sleep and thereby give rise to affliction. Those who encounter such things should bathe and cleanse their bodies and put on fresh, clean garments.
Verse 10
They should understand that this wondrous king of sūtras is profound and praised by the buddhas. At the same time, they should concentrate single-mindedly without distraction, reading, reciting, hearing, receiving, and upholding it.
Verse 11
Through the power of this sūtra, they can remain far from unexpected calamities. Every other suffering and hardship will likewise be completely eliminated.
Verse 12
The Four Heavenly Kings who protect the world will come with their ministers and retinues. Measureless yakṣas will also single-mindedly protect the person who upholds the sūtra.
Verse 13
There will also be the goddess Great Eloquence, the deity of the Nairañjanā River, the mother-deity Hārītī, and the earth deities Firm and Steadfast.
Verse 14
Lord Brahmā, Śakra the lord of devas, the dragon kings and kinnaras, the garuḍa kings, and the hosts of asuras will likewise be among the protectors.
Verse 15
All these deities will come with their retinues to protect the person who upholds the sūtra, never leaving by day or night.
Verse 16
I shall teach this sūtra, revealing the profound sphere practiced by the buddhas. This is the secret teaching of the buddhas, difficult to encounter even in ten million eons.
Verse 17
If people hear this sūtra and can proclaim it to others, rejoice in their hearts, or establish offerings to the sūtra—
Verse 18
Such people will, for measureless eons, constantly receive the reverence of devas, humans, dragons, and spirits.
Verse 19
The resulting accumulation of merit is measureless, exceeding the sands of the Ganges. Those who read and recite this sūtra will obtain such virtue.
Verse 20
The World-Honored Buddhas of the ten directions and bodhisattvas of profound and extensive practice will also protect those who uphold this sūtra and free them from every suffering and hardship.
Verse 21
Those who make offerings to this sūtra should first bathe and cleanse their bodies as stated before, offer food, drink, incense, and flowers, and constantly arouse compassionate intent.
Verse 22
Those who wish to hear this sūtra should make their minds pure and undefiled. Constantly giving rise to joyful thoughts can increase every virtue.
Verse 23
Those who hear this sūtra with a mind of reverence can be well born in the human course and remain far from every suffering and hardship.
Verse 24
Such a person’s roots of goodness have already matured and are praised by the buddhas; for that reason, the person can hear this sūtra and its Dharma of repentance.
The “Introduction” does not begin by proposing an abstract doctrine. It first brings the Buddha, the place, the listeners, their wish to hear, and the time of teaching into view one by one. The Buddha then emerges from samādhi, observes the assembly, and proclaims twenty-four verses. This sequence answers a question that is often overlooked: What encounters must occur for profound Dharma to enter the world?
Hearing, Time, Buddha, and Place
The chapter begins, “Thus have I heard.” These words set the assembly about to unfold within a lineage of direct hearing. “At one time,” the Bhagavān, Rājagṛha, and the summit of Vulture Peak then give what was heard its time, its teacher, and its place. At the same time, the Buddha abides in the most purified and exceedingly profound dharma-realm—the sphere of the buddhas and the dwelling place of the Tathāgata. The summit is where the Dharma assembly takes place; the profound dharma-realm reveals the depth of the Tathāgata’s dwelling. The two meet at the same opening.
This opening does not hurry into the meaning of the verses. If Dharma is to be heard, it is not enough to see only what is said. One must also see who speaks it, where it is spoken, and who heard it directly. “Thus have I heard” is therefore not a stock phrase to be skipped; it is the first gate through which later readers and reciters enter the assembly.
Ninety-Eight Thousand Great Bhikṣus
The first to appear beside the Buddha are ninety-eight thousand great bhikṣus. The sūtra says that they are all arhats: well disciplined like great elephant kings, with every outflow eliminated and every affliction removed, liberated in both mind and wisdom. What had to be done was complete; their heavy burdens had been laid down; they had attained their own benefit; and every fetter that perpetuates existence had been exhausted. Abiding in pure discipline, adorned with skillful means and wisdom, they had realized the eight liberations and reached the farther shore.
The list of names begins with Ājñāta Kauṇḍinya, Aśvajit, Vāṣpa, Mahānāma, and Bhadrika. It continues with Mahākāśyapa, Uruvilvā-Kāśyapa, Gayā-Kāśyapa, Nadī-Kāśyapa, Śāriputra, and Mahāmaudgalyāyana. Ānanda is separately identified as still remaining at the stage of training. The list places arhats who have completed what had to be done in the same assembly as Ānanda, who is still in training. Those who hear the Dharma do not occupy only one position on the path.
In the afternoon, these great śrāvakas emerge from samādhi and go to the Buddha. They bow their heads at his feet, circumambulate him three times to the right, then withdraw and sit to one side. Emerging from samādhi, going forward, bowing, circumambulating, withdrawing, and sitting—every bodily action is directed toward a place from which to hear the Dharma.
Hundreds of Thousands of Millions of Bodhisattvas
Next come hundreds of thousands of millions of bodhisattva mahāsattvas. The sūtra compares their majestic virtue to that of great dragon kings and unfolds their long-matured qualities through giving, discipline, patience, vigor, meditative absorption, wisdom, skillful means, supernormal powers, dhāraṇī, and eloquence. Their afflictions and accumulated defilements had been removed, and before long they would attain all-aspect knowledge. They could subdue Māra, sound the Dharma drum, overcome non-Buddhist paths, turn the wondrous wheel of Dharma, and benefit humans, devas, and sentient beings throughout the six courses. With great loving-kindness, compassion, and indestructible strength, they served the buddhas and would not abandon their vast vows even to the end of the future. They had awakened to the patience of non-arising with respect to the dharmas of the three times, surpassed the spheres of the two vehicles, and could expound the Great Teacher’s teaching, penetrate secret Dharma, and understand profound emptiness.
The long list of fifty-three names runs from Unobstructed Turning of the Dharma Wheel, Constantly Arousing the Mind to Turn the Dharma Wheel, Constant Vigor, and Never Resting, through Maitreya, Mañjuśrī, Avalokiteśvara, Kṣitigarbha, Ākāśagarbha, Vajrapāṇi, Bestowing Medicine, Healing the Illnesses of Affliction, and King of Physicians, and finally to twenty-one bodhisattvas whose names begin with Great Cloud. Their names evoke turning the Dharma, vigor, compassion, wisdom, vows, healing, prediction, light, thunder and rain, flowers and fragrance, dispelling darkness, and breaking cataracts. Each name also points toward a way of benefiting the world.
The bodhisattva assembly likewise emerges from samādhi in the afternoon, goes to the Buddha, bows, circumambulates him three times to the right, then withdraws and sits to one side. The qualities of the śrāvakas and bodhisattvas differ, yet their conduct before the Buddha corresponds: from the samādhi in which each had been abiding, they move toward a shared assembly of hearing.
Youths, Devas, Dragon Kings, and Yakṣas
Next are 580 million Licchavi youths, led by fourteen youths: Lion Light, Lion Wisdom, Dharma-Given, Indra-Given, Great Light, Great Fierce, Buddha-Protected, Dharma-Protected, Saṅgha-Protected, Vajra-Protected, Space-Protected, Roar of Space, Jewel Treasury, and Auspicious Wondrous Treasury. They abide in unsurpassed awakening, deeply trust and delight in the Great Vehicle, and in the afternoon also come to bow to the Buddha, circumambulate him to the right, and sit down.
Forty-two thousand devas then join the assembly, led by eight: Joyful Vision, Joyful Delight, Sunlight, Moon-Crest, Bright Wisdom, Pure Wisdom of Space, Removing Affliction, and Auspiciousness. They have made vast vows to protect and uphold the Great Vehicle so that the True Dharma may continue without interruption. They too come in the afternoon and complete the rites of reverence.
Twenty-eight thousand dragon kings also arrive. Their eight leaders are Lotus, Elāpattra, Great Power, Great Roar, Small Wave, Bearer of Swift Waters, Golden Face, and Wish-Fulfilling. They delight in receiving and upholding the Great Vehicle, arouse profound trust, and praise and protect the True Dharma. In the afternoon, they too come to bow to the Buddha, circumambulate him to the right, and sit to one side.
Thirty-six thousand yakṣas are led by the Heavenly King Vaiśravaṇa, followed by the eight yakṣas Ambā, Bearing Ambā, Lotus-Light Treasury, Lotus-Faced, Frowning Brow, Manifesting Great Terror, Earth-Shaking, and Devouring. They delight in the Tathāgata’s True Dharma and protect it with profound intent without weariness or laxity. In the afternoon, they likewise bow to the Buddha, circumambulate him, and sit down.
Every Assembly Gathers Like Clouds and Wishes to Hear
Forty-nine thousand garuḍa kings come, led by King Fragrant-Elephant Power. Gandharvas, asuras, kinnaras, and mahoragas; seers dwelling in mountains, forests, rivers, and seas; the assemblies of kings from many realms; queens and consorts of the inner palaces; men and women of pure trust; and multitudes of humans and devas also gather like clouds. They wish to protect the unsurpassed Great Vehicle and to make the sūtra remain in the world by reading, reciting, receiving, upholding, copying, and circulating it. In the afternoon, they too go to the Buddha, pay reverence, and sit down.
By this point, śrāvakas, bodhisattvas, human and celestial multitudes, and the eight classes of dragons and spirits have assembled. They join palms with utmost sincerity, reverently look up at the World-Honored One, never turn their gaze away, and wish and delight to hear the excellent, wondrous Dharma. All the preceding numbers, qualities, names, and rites now converge in a single shared action: the wish to hear.
Hearing the Dharma is not merely a pair of ears receiving sound. The members of the assembly first come from their respective places, emerge from samādhi, show reverence with their bodies, then collect their gaze and their minds. A Dharma assembly becomes a Dharma assembly precisely where a teacher and those who wish to hear meet.
Emerging from Samādhi, Observing the Assembly, and Proclaiming Verses
When the multitude wishes to hear, the Bhagavān also emerges from samādhi in the afternoon, observes everyone present, and begins to proclaim verses. The great śrāvakas and bodhisattvas emerge from samādhi in order to come and hear the Dharma; the Buddha emerges from samādhi to address the gathered assembly. The movements on the two sides meet before the verses begin.
The twenty-four verses first call the wondrous Dharma of Golden Light the supreme king of sūtras, profound and difficult to hear, the sphere of the buddhas. They then name four buddhas who jointly protect it: Akṣobhya in the east, Jeweled Appearance in the south, Amitāyus in the west, and Sound of the Heavenly Drum in the north. Calling it the king of sūtras is not isolated praise; the name is immediately connected to the buddhas’ protection, repentance that extinguishes offenses, purification of evil karma, removal of suffering, production of happiness, all-knowing knowledge, and the adornment of virtue.
The verses then look directly at the sufferings sentient beings may encounter: incomplete bodies and faculties, diminished lifespans, inauspicious signs, and the departure of protective deities; anger from close friends, scattering of relatives, mutual estrangement, and loss of possessions; strange changes in baleful stars, invasion by harmful sorcery, oppressive sorrow, and evil dreams in sleep. Some of these sufferings afflict the body, some arise among people or affect possessions, and others become distress within the mind. The sūtra does not compress them into one vague word, “suffering,” but names one by one the pressures sentient beings endure.
In the face of these sufferings, the verses counsel people to bathe, put on fresh and clean clothing, and—with undistracted attention—read, recite, hear, receive, and uphold the king of sūtras. They say that the sūtra’s power can remove calamities. The Four Heavenly Kings and their ministers and retinues, measureless yakṣas, the goddess Great Eloquence, the deity of the Nairañjanā River, the mother-deity Hārītī, the earth deity Firm and Steadfast, Brahmā, Śakra, dragon kings, kinnaras, garuḍa kings, asuras, and their retinues will also protect the person who upholds the sūtra by day and night.
The final portion returns from protection to hearing. The secret and profound teaching of the buddhas is difficult to encounter even in ten million eons. Hearing it, proclaiming it to others, rejoicing in one’s heart, and establishing offerings all gather merit, win the reverence of devas, humans, dragons, and spirits, and receive the protection of the buddhas of the ten directions and bodhisattvas of profound practice. Those who make offerings bathe their bodies, present food, drink, incense, and flowers, and constantly arouse compassion. Those who wish to hear purify their minds and give rise to joy and respect. The final two lines say that those able to hear have matured their roots of goodness and are praised by the buddhas. The chapter thus returns to the “hearing” with which it began: from “Thus have I heard,” to the assembly’s wish to hear, to the rarity of hearing the sūtra, the entire introductory assembly is threaded through by hearing the Dharma.
Within the Introduction, the twenty-four verses gather in advance the king of sūtras, the four buddhas, repentance, extinction of karma, release from difficulties, protection, offerings, and the merit of hearing and upholding—the subjects the rest of the sūtra will unfold. The assembly’s formation and the direction of the whole sūtra therefore do not break apart into two separate matters. Precisely because the persons, time, place, and wish have converged, the profound Dharma can open before the multitude.
A Shared Direction within the Lists of Names
This chapter devotes great space to listing those present. The numbers unfold layer by layer: ninety-eight thousand; hundreds of thousands of millions; 580 million; forty-two thousand; twenty-eight thousand; thirty-six thousand; and forty-nine thousand. Their identities include śrāvakas, bodhisattvas, youths, devas, dragon kings, yakṣas, garuḍas, and other musicians, non-devas, song spirits, serpent beings, seers, royalty, and men and women of pure trust. The assembly’s vastness is shown not by one total alone, but by the fact that living beings of so many different kinds can all turn toward one Dharma seat.
The groups also bring different practices and aspirations when they arrive. Liberation and discipline distinguish the śrāvakas; great vows, great patience, great compassion, and transformative teaching distinguish the bodhisattvas. The youths deeply trust the Great Vehicle; the devas vow that the True Dharma will not be cut off; the dragon kings delight in receiving, upholding, and praising it; the yakṣas protect the Dharma with profound intent; and the later assemblies wish to read, recite, receive, uphold, copy, and circulate it. Here, “listeners” are not a crowd of indistinct spectators. Some arrive with what they have realized, some with vows, and some with commitments to protection and circulation. When they join palms and wish to hear, their respective qualities become part of the assembly.
The repeated afternoon rites bind these different groups together. The sūtra does not merely say that they came. Again and again it describes going to the Buddha, bowing at his feet, circumambulating three times to the right, then withdrawing to sit on one side; before this, it says separately of the great śrāvakas and bodhisattvas that they 「從定而起」—“emerged from samādhi.” Coming is not barging in, and sitting is not casually taking a place. Each group settles the body in the same reverent sequence, allowing the many different arrivals to become a single multitude able to hear the Dharma together.
Before Suffering, the Sūtra Makes Practice Concrete
The sufferings listed in the twenty-four verses extend from body and life to relatives, possessions, external conditions, and the mind. Incomplete bodies and diminished lifespans touch life itself. The departure of protective deities, anger from friends, scattering of relatives, and mutual estrangement reveal the collapse of former supports. The loss of precious possessions damages one’s means of living. Baleful stars, harmful sorcery, pressing sufferings, and evil dreams allow unease to move from outward signs into sleep and thought. By naming these conditions one by one, the verses keep reading, recitation, reception, and upholding from becoming religious actions suspended in the air. They become a path by which sentient beings amid concrete dangers seek release from suffering.
The corresponding practices are also located one by one in body, speech, and mind. Bathing and putting on fresh, clean clothes first set the body in order. Undistracted attention collects the mind. Reading, reciting, hearing, receiving, and upholding allow the Dharma to remain in one’s life through sound, memory, and practice. Offerings include food, drink, incense, flowers, and compassionate intent; hearing the sūtra requires a purified mind, joy, and respect. Outward cleanliness, material offerings, and inward compassion are not collapsed into one thing, yet all point toward the same mind that hears and upholds the Dharma.
The list of protectors likewise moves from near to far. The Four Heavenly Kings come with their ministers and retinues, and measureless yakṣas single-mindedly guard the practitioner. The goddess Great Eloquence, the river deity, the mother-deity, the earth deity, Brahmā, Śakra, dragon kings, kinnaras, garuḍa kings, asuras, and their retinues all offer protection. The first half of the Introduction describes the assemblies going to the Buddha; the verses describe Dharma protectors going to the place where someone upholds the sūtra. First, sentient beings move toward the Dharma; later, protectors move toward the person who upholds it. These two movements extend the Dharma assembly beyond a single afternoon on Vulture Peak.
Hearing, Teaching, and Enabling the Dharma to Continue
The final verses list four actions directed immediately toward the sūtra: hearing it oneself, proclaiming it to others, rejoicing in another’s wholesome action, and establishing offerings. The merit gathered by readers and reciters exceeds the sands of the Ganges, and those who uphold the sūtra receive the protection of buddhas and bodhisattvas. Yet the verses do not depict merit as flowing only toward oneself. Teaching others, rejoicing in their goodness, making offerings to the Dharma, and constantly arousing compassion allow the Dharma one has heard to keep flowing toward others.
The direct hearing at the beginning, the assembly’s wish to hear, and the rarity of hearing in the final verses therefore form three advances. Direct hearing gives transmission its basis. The wish to hear opens the present Dharma assembly. The rarity of hearing tells listeners how difficult the encounter is. Once people whose roots of goodness have matured hear the Dharma, they can also proclaim, read, recite, make offerings to, and uphold it. A single hearing thereby acquires the possibility of continuing into another encounter.
No leader in the assembly speaks in advance on behalf of everyone. The groups express themselves together by joining palms in utmost sincerity, reverently looking up, and wishing and delighting to hear. The Buddha, too, first observes the multitude that has arrived and only then proclaims the verses. The wish to hear is not completed by one representative’s statement but shown through the bodily conduct and mental direction of the whole assembly; teaching occurs when this shared wish has matured. The Introduction thus preserves in full the preparation before speech: arriving, paying reverence, sitting, looking up, wishing to hear—and then teaching. In this way, the conditions for Dharma gradually come together.
Through the Eye of Consciousness-Only
Huizhao views this encounter through seven perfections. Hearing, time, the teacher of Dharma, Rājagṛha, and Vulture Peak constitute the perfection of the introduction. The most purified and exceedingly profound dharma-realm in which the Buddha dwells constitutes the perfection of samādhi. The great bhikṣus, bodhisattvas, humans, devas, dragons, spirits, and all the other assemblies constitute the perfection of listeners. The multitude’s wish to hear constitutes the perfection of the cause for teaching. The Buddha’s emergence from samādhi in the afternoon constitutes the perfection of the time for teaching. His observation of the multitude after emerging constitutes the perfection of discerning capacities. Finally, the twenty-four verses that present the whole sūtra’s purport constitute the perfection of introductory teaching. These are not seven separate scenes but sevenfold completeness through which the Dharma heard moves from being credible and hearable to being actually proclaimed.
Within the first perfection, Huizhao considers the Buddha’s dwelling in two ways. Rājagṛha and Vulture Peak are where the form-body dwells; the most purified and profound dharma-realm is where the dharma-body dwells. The assembly takes place in a city and on a mountain, yet is not exhausted by geographical surfaces. The Buddha’s bodily dwelling and Dharma dwelling give the same “here” two depths. Huizhao also preserves several ways of reading the time and place. One may regard the Introduction and the four buddhas’ teaching on lifespan as one time and one place, or as two times and two places; an older interpretation posits four times and three places. The decisive issues are how Ānanda heard directly and how the later teaching by the four buddhas in Wonderful Banner’s chamber connects with this assembly.
In Huizhao’s account, the perfection of listeners comprises eighteen classes, but the number is not the endpoint. When he reads the qualities of the śrāvakas and bodhisattvas closely, a single expression often opens two possibilities. The śrāvakas at this assembly may include actual practitioners, practitioners acting through skillful means, and reflected attendants. Groups not listed at the beginning may simply have been omitted for brevity, or may be disclosed later in the text. Some bodhisattva names derive from original vows, others from qualities, and all may display both benefit for oneself and benefit for others. The immense catalog is therefore not merely proof by numbers; identities, practices, vows, and capacities of many kinds together complete the assembly able to hear.
Where the time of teaching joins the discernment of capacities, Huizhao gathers both under “the perfection of the manner of teaching.” Afternoon, emergence from samādhi, and observation of the assembly are not three accidental actions. Samādhi provides an inner basis for the teaching; observation enables what is taught to answer the capacities able to hear; speech then brings samādhi and observation into enacted teaching. As for the perfection of introductory teaching, Huizhao reads the twenty-four verses as an outline of the entire sūtra. They first indicate the sūtra that is taught and the buddhas who protect it, and then indicate the sūtra’s central teaching and its protection and circulation. Within the central teaching, they move from lifespan, the three bodies, repentance, and extinction of karma through purification of the grounds, praise of the Buddha, dhāraṇī, emptiness, and the fulfillment of vows in reliance on emptiness. Though the verses are brief, many of the whole sūtra’s channels have already begun within them.
The chapter’s final verse also accommodates two depths. On the one hand, Huizhao carries freedom from suffering and difficulty all the way to the supreme fruit of nirvāṇa; on the other, he gathers the Introduction’s immediate intent within freedom from the eight difficulties in the human course. The first sees the ultimate end toward which the sūtra’s power points. The second remains close to the present verse’s conditions for hearing. One is distant, the other near: thus “freedom from difficulty” neither stops at immediate safety nor skips over the present starting point of matured roots of goodness.
Carrying Forward. The Introduction opens the Dharma gate through the assembly able to hear and the twenty-four verses. In the next chapter, the bodhisattva Wonderful Banner, alone in a quiet place, gives rise to a question: Why is the lifespan of the Tathāgata Śākyamuni so short—only eighty years? This chapter first names the four buddhas of the four directions who jointly protect the sūtra; in “The Lifespan of the Tathāgata,” those four buddhas then appear in Wonderful Banner’s chamber. From the multitude’s wish to hear, the sūtra moves to one person reflecting deeply and asking. From the verses’ advance announcement of four buddhas, it moves to the four buddhas answering in person. The conditions for hearing gathered in the introductory assembly here carry forward into the first exchange of question and answer.

Placement of the chapter as a whole. This chapter proceeds from “Thus have I heard,” the Buddha’s dwelling place, and the gathering of the assembly to the Buddha’s emergence from samādhi, his observation of the assembly, and his recitation of twenty-four verses. The prose brings the hearers, place, time, and ritual conduct of the Dharma assembly to completion; the verses then announce in advance the king of sūtras, the four buddhas, repentance, freedom from calamity, protection, and the benefits of hearing the sūtra. Yijing’s Tang recension unfolds the complete assembly. At the corresponding point, the Dharmakṣema and composite recensions pass directly into the verses on the king of sūtras. All three have an Introduction chapter, while each transmission preserves its own degree of detail.
I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
Yijing’s title is The Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King, and the chapter title is 「序品第一」—“Introduction, Chapter 1” 〔T16n0665 0403a06〕. The chapter body begins with 「如是我聞」—“Thus have I heard” 〔T16n0665 0403a07〕 and ends with 「方得聞是經,及以懺悔法。」—“Only then can one hear this sūtra and its Dharma of repentance” 〔T16n0665 0404b26〕. At 0404b27 the title of Chapter 2, The Lifespan of the Tathāgata, has already begun. The chapter body contains 1,836 Han characters; its forty-eight verse lines form twenty-four verses. It contains no mantra, spell, dhāraṇī, or transmitted inline gloss. The preceding 「大唐龍興三藏聖教序」—“Imperial Preface to the Sacred Teaching by the Tripiṭaka Master of Longxing Monastery of the Great Tang” 〔T16n0665 0403a03〕 is a separate fascicle-front preface and does not belong to this chapter.
Huizhao’s overall outline consists of seven perfections:
—“Within the Introduction chapter there are seven perfections: first, perfection of the introduction; second, perfection of samādhi; third, perfection of the audience; fourth, perfection of the cause for teaching; fifth, perfection of the time of teaching; sixth, perfection of discerning capacities; and seventh, perfection of the preliminary statement” 〔T39n1788 0183c08〕.
| Sequence | Huizhao’s heading | Scriptural basis | Commentary range and judgment |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Perfection of the introduction | Hearing, time, the Buddha, and Vulture Peak at Rājagṛha | Huizhao gathers these under 「序圓滿中有二種勝,謂城勝餘城、山勝餘山,顯此法門及功德勝」—“Within the perfection of the introduction are two kinds of excellence: the city surpasses other cities, and the mountain surpasses other mountains, thereby revealing the excellence of this Dharma-gate and its virtues” 〔T39n1788 0183c10〕. He further divides the dwelling place into 「一色身住處、二法身住處」—“first, the dwelling place of the form-body; second, the dwelling place of the dharma-body” 〔T39n1788 0184a04〕. |
| 2 | Perfection of samādhi | 「於最清淨甚深法界,諸佛之境如來所居」—“within the most purified, profound dharma-realm, the sphere of the buddhas and the dwelling place of the Tathāgata” 〔T16n0665 0403a08〕 | 「明佛法身住依止成就分,即三昧成就分。」—“This reveals the section on the accomplishment of the support in which the Buddha’s dharma-body dwells; it is the section on the accomplishment of samādhi” 〔T39n1788 0184a12〕. Huizhao also uses the later emergence from samādhi as retrospective evidence that the Buddha is abiding in samādhi here. |
| 3 | Perfection of the audience | Bhikṣus, bodhisattvas, Licchavi youths, devas, dragon kings, yakṣas, garuḍas, and the remaining assemblies | 「初眾成就,總有十八」—“The initial accomplishment of the assembly comprises eighteen groups in all” 〔T39n1788 0184c26〕. The eighteen classes belong to the commentator’s outline; the sūtra does not itself call them eighteen assemblies. |
| 4 | Perfection of the cause for teaching | 「願樂欲聞殊勝妙法。」—“They wished and delighted to hear the excellent, wondrous Dharma” 〔T16n0665 0404a05〕 | 「說因成就。 —“The accomplishment of the cause for teaching: because the assembly wishes to hear, the Buddha can then teach” 〔T39n1788 0190a20〕. |
| 5 | Perfection of the time of teaching | The Buddha emerges from samādhi in the afternoon | This shares the same cited scriptural passage as the discerning of capacities. Huizhao takes the afternoon and the emergence from samādhi as the time of teaching. |
| 6 | Perfection of discerning capacities | The Buddha observes the assembly | 「發起序,有二:此初時成就,及說法所依威儀成就,即審機宜也。 —“The occasioning introduction has two parts: first, the accomplishment of the time; and the accomplishment of the deportment on which the teaching depends, which is the discerning of capacities. It is also called the perfection of the manner of teaching, because that name fully encompasses the meaning” 〔T39n1788 0190a23〕. |
| 7 | Perfection of the preliminary statement | The twenty-four verses | 「此標說成就。有二十四頌,大分為三」—“This is the accomplishment of the preliminary statement. There are twenty-four verses, broadly divided into three parts” 〔T39n1788 0190a28〕. The three major divisions, four sections, and seven topics are all the commentator’s analysis of how the verses announce the whole sūtra in advance. |
Huizhao further gathers the seven perfections into a common and a specific introduction: 「此七圓滿分為二序:初及第三名通序,亦名證信;餘別序,亦名發起。」—“These seven perfections are divided into two introductions: the first and third are called the common introduction, also called the attestation of trust; the remaining ones are the specific introduction, also called the occasioning” 〔T39n1788 0183c25〕. The seven perfections are not seven physical subsections in the sūtra. The chapter proceeds continuously through the common introduction, the gathering of the assembly, their wish to hear, the Buddha’s emergence from samādhi, and the recitation of the verses.
Huizhao’s commentary on the Introduction begins at 0183c07. Its actual doctrinal ending is 「若說勝果,恐初機人未能信故。」—“If the excellent fruit were taught, it was feared that persons of initial capacity might not yet be able to believe it” 〔T39n1788 0192a25〕. The text at 0192a26–0192b04 consists of the fascicle ending, the title of the next fascicle, and the attribution; it does not belong to the commentary on this chapter. The material before 0183c07 is the general discussion of the entire sūtra.

After the statement of the Tathāgata’s dwelling, Yijing’s recension unfolds the named assembly, its shared ritual conduct, its wish to hear, and the Buddha’s emergence from samādhi and observation of the assembly. The other two recensions proceed directly at the corresponding point into the verses on the king of sūtras. This is the visible structural difference in fullness among the three recensions; it does not entail a judgment about origin or value.

Four-Character Transposition Note in T16n0664
Both collation notes refer back to the chapter-title anchor at 0359c13 in the main text. The notes themselves are in the collation section at the end of the fascicle and do not have line labels of their own. Their exact wording follows:
0359c13〕 — “The four characters ‘Introduction, Chapter 1’ stand on the line before ‘Thus have I heard’ in the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Palace editions.”
0359c13〕 — “The four characters ‘Introduction, Chapter 1’ stand on the line before ‘Thus have I heard’ in the Third and Palace editions.”
Both transmitted notes record the position of the four characters on the line preceding “Thus have I heard”; the Palace edition appears in both notes. This records the transmission without adjudicating priority or correctness.
III. Scriptural Grounds for the Consciousness-Only Meaning (the Point of the Eye)
This chapter does not yet unfold a doctrinal argument. It first arranges in sequence the conditions under which a teaching can take place. Huizhao’s seven perfections begin at precisely this point: the perfection of the introduction establishes the trustworthy hearing, time, speaker, and place; the perfection of samādhi illumines the profound dharma-realm in which the Buddha dwells; the perfection of the audience unfolds those capable of hearing; the perfection of the cause for teaching rests in the assembly’s wish to hear; the perfections of the time of teaching and discerning capacities rest in the Buddha’s emergence from samādhi and observation of the assembly; and the perfection of the preliminary statement gathers the king of sūtras, repentance, freedom from calamity, protection, and the virtues of receiving and upholding into the twenty-four opening verses.
Huizhao explains the dharma-realm passage as follows: 「離二障故名最清淨,不共二乘名甚深,諸法自性名法界。」—“Because it is free from the two obstructions, it is called most purified; because it is not shared with the two vehicles, it is called profound; because it is the intrinsic nature of all dharmas, it is called the dharma-realm” 〔T39n1788 0184a14〕. This reads the Buddha’s dwelling through the two obstructions and the dharma-realm. For the assembly, Huizhao first identifies eighteen classes and then, within the virtues of the śrāvakas and bodhisattvas, distinguishes multiple possibilities concerning provisional and real practitioners, the three natures, the two emptinesses, and the stages of patience. He does not treat the twenty-four verses as praise alone, but as an outline of the entire sūtra. Within his commentary range on this chapter, fifty explicit parallel explanations, distinct interpretations, and questions and answers, together with five further explanations introduced by “again,” each present a different path of reading.
Fifty Explicit Parallel Explanations and Question-and-Answer Nodes in Huizhao’s Commentary Range
| Sequence | Node | Huizhao’s text |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Why samādhi is listed first | 「以身心住俱名住故,又二義故合一處明。」—“Because the abiding of both body and mind is called abiding, and because of these two meanings, they are explained together in one place” 〔T39n1788 0183c28〕. |
| 2 | Separate explanation of the Tathāgata’s dwelling | 「或智內證云如來居。」—“Alternatively, because wisdom inwardly realizes it, it is called the Tathāgata’s dwelling” 〔T39n1788 0184a21〕. |
| 3 | Separate explanation of “most purified” | Huizhao also gives 「離障真如名最清淨」—“suchness free from obstruction is called most purified” 〔T39n1788 0184a22〕 as an explanation. |
| 4 | The older explanation of four times and three places | 「又舊人解云:四時三處。」—“Again, earlier interpreters explain it as four times and three places” 〔T39n1788 0184b02〕. |
| 5 | One time and one place | 「今者解云:但是一時一處」—“The present explanation is that it is only one time and one place” 〔T39n1788 0184b05〕. |
| 6 | Two times and two places | 「或可二時二處」—“Alternatively, it may be two times and two places” 〔T39n1788 0184b12〕. |
| 7 | Difficulty concerning Ānanda’s hearing the four buddhas teach | Huizhao adduces the statement in the Vajra-Flower Sūtra: 「阿難比丘得法性覺性自在王三昧,以三昧力知所說經皆能憶持。」—“The bhikṣu Ānanda attained the Samādhi of the Sovereign King’s Mastery over the Awakened Nature of Dharma-nature; through the power of samādhi he knew and could remember and uphold every sūtra that was taught” 〔T39n1788 0184b17〕. He also adduces the statement in the Sūtra on the Samādhi of Contemplating the Buddha: 「阿難因聞佛說念佛,阿難見佛,即憶過去九十億佛所說經藏,憶持不忘。」—“Because Ānanda heard the Buddha teach recollection of the Buddha, when Ānanda saw the Buddha he remembered the sūtra treasury taught by nine billion buddhas in the past, retaining it without forgetting” 〔T39n1788 0184b19〕. He concludes: 「今亦何妨佛力加被見佛聞經,竝能記憶得云我聞。」—“Why should it be impossible here as well that, blessed by the Buddha’s power, he saw the buddhas, heard the sūtra, and could remember it all, so that he could say, ‘I heard’?” 〔T39n1788 0184b20〕. |
| 8 | Answer to the preceding difficulty | 「答曰:不例。彼等經說皆昔曾聞」—“Answer: the cases are not analogous. Those sūtras say that all of it had been heard previously” 〔T39n1788 0184b21〕. |
| 9 | Separate explanation of whether the Buddha’s body is provisional or real | 「又釋:說此經佛實通變化及他受用」—“A further explanation: the Buddha who teaches this sūtra actually includes both the transformation body and the other-enjoyment body” 〔T39n1788 0184c13〕. |
| 10 | Separate explanation in terms of inclusion within a pure land | 「或最清淨如來所居,即彰菩薩同能智證亦在彼土,即淨土攝。」—“Alternatively, ‘most purified, the dwelling of the Tathāgata’ reveals that bodhisattvas who likewise can realize it through wisdom also dwell in that land; it is therefore included within the pure land” 〔T39n1788 0184c15〕. |
| 11 | Whether the śrāvakas in this assembly are provisional or real | 「今此經會或可通三,所餘諸眾權實難悉。」—“The assembly of this sūtra may include all three; for the remaining assemblies, whether they are provisional or real is difficult to determine completely” 〔T39n1788 0184c24〕. |
| 12 | First explanation of assemblies not listed | 「或略不論,據實應得有。」—“Perhaps they are omitted for brevity; in reality, they should be present” 〔T39n1788 0185a18〕. |
| 13 | Second explanation of assemblies not listed | 「二云:尼及色界初雖不列,下文說有。」—“The second explanation says: although nuns and beings of the form realm are not listed at first, the later text says they are present” 〔T39n1788 0185a20〕. |
| 14 | Other unlisted assemblies | 「獨覺、輪王、地獄、無色,上下文無,或時未熟或不能行,故無餘也。」—“Solitary realizers, wheel-turning kings, hell beings, and beings of the formless realm do not appear in the preceding or following text. Perhaps their time was not ripe, or they could not practice; therefore there are no others” 〔T39n1788 0185a21〕. |
| 15 | A further division of the twelve assemblies | 「十二眾或可分二:初列聖眾、後列凡眾。」—“The twelve assemblies may also be divided into two: the noble assemblies are listed first, and ordinary assemblies afterward” 〔T39n1788 0185a24〕. |
| 16 | Direction of reciprocal interpretation among statements of the arhats’ virtues | 「或由上句故下句得起,或由下句上句得起,非唯一故」—“The following statement may arise because of the preceding one, or the preceding statement may arise because of the following one; there is not only a single relation” 〔T39n1788 0185b14〕. |
| 17 | One account of Mahānāma and his brother | 「王有二子,一云阿泥律陀、二名摩訶那摩。」—“The king had two sons: the first was named Aniruddha, and the second Mahānāma” 〔T39n1788 0186b13〕. |
| 18 | Majestic power may be a summary statement | 「又有威力,準《瑜伽》三十七廣釋威力。 —“Again, they possess majestic power. Following fascicle thirty-seven of the Yogācārabhūmi, majestic power is explained extensively. Alternatively, this majestic power may summarize all the following statements, because majestic power has many kinds” 〔T39n1788 0186c14〕. |
| 19 | Separate explanation of purity | 「或三輪淨」—“Alternatively, it is purity of the three spheres” 〔T39n1788 0186c21〕. |
| 20 | Separate enumeration under skillful cultivation of means | 「又復善修方便願力等,或復具修十二善巧。」—“Again, they skillfully cultivate means, the power of vows, and so forth; alternatively, they fully cultivate the twelve kinds of skillfulness” 〔T39n1788 0187a01〕. |
| 21 | Separate correlations of affliction, accumulation, and defilement | 「或復惱累是種現,染即習氣并所知障」—“Alternatively, affliction and accumulation are seeds and manifest activity, while defilement is habitual tendency together with the cognitive obstruction” 〔T39n1788 0187a16〕. |
| 22 | Stage indicated by “before long” | 「此諸菩薩越前二劫或處法雲,皆補一生」—“These bodhisattvas have passed beyond the first two eons or dwell on the Dharma-Cloud ground; all are separated by only one life” 〔T39n1788 0187a20〕. |
| 23 | Separate explanation of great wisdom | 「或復大智即智大性,具解二空故。」—“Alternatively, great wisdom is the greatness in the nature of wisdom, because it fully understands the two emptinesses” 〔T39n1788 0187b19〕. |
| 24 | First separate explanation of great patience | 「又釋:如《智度論》第六言」—“A further explanation follows what fascicle six of the Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom says” 〔T39n1788 0187b22〕. The cited passage reads: 「大忍成就者,以等忍、法忍此二增故,名為大忍。」—“One accomplished in great patience is called possessed of great patience because these two—equal patience and patience with respect to dharmas—have increased” 〔T39n1788 0187b22〕. |
| 25 | Separate explanation of accomplishment and great patience | 「或可成就是得,謂得勝品名之為大忍。」—“Alternatively, accomplishment means attainment: attaining the excellent grade is called great patience” 〔T39n1788 0187b24〕. |
| 26 | Second separate explanation of great patience | 「又解:今言具足,即具三忍,謂耐怨害忍、安受苦忍、諦察法忍。」—“A further explanation: ‘fully possessed’ here means possessing the three patiences—patience in enduring injury from enemies, patience in accepting suffering, and patience in discerning dharmas” 〔T39n1788 0187b26〕. |
| 27 | Two explanations of pure cause | 「二種俱因,或淨之因、或因即淨。」—“Both kinds are causes: either causes of purity, or causes that are themselves pure” 〔T39n1788 0187c23〕. |
| 28 | Question concerning the dharmas of the three times and the three natures | 「問:遍計體無、圓成常住,今此經文云三世法,如何得云觀於三性得三種忍?」—“Question: the wholly-imagined is without substance, while the perfectly-accomplished permanently abides. Since this sūtra passage speaks of the dharmas of the three times, how can it be said that by contemplating the three natures one attains three kinds of patience?” 〔T39n1788 0187c27〕. |
| 29 | Answer to the preceding question | 「答:於依他上觀二我無,即依他中亦有圓成,非即離故。」—“Answer: upon the other-dependent, one contemplates the nonexistence of the two selves. Within the other-dependent there is also the perfectly-accomplished, for the two are neither identical nor separate” 〔T39n1788 0187c29〕. |
| 30 | Separate explanation of great skillfulness | 「或依大乘說蘊界等諸善巧法以化世間。」—“Alternatively, relying on the Great Vehicle, they teach skillful dharmas concerning the aggregates, elements, and so forth in order to transform the world” 〔T39n1788 0188a13〕. |

| 32 | Separate pairing of the two names concerning vigor | 「或他利自利對。」—“Alternatively, they are paired as benefiting others and benefiting oneself” 〔T39n1788 0188b06〕. |
| 33 | Meaning of the name Maitreya | 「慈氏,梵音梅呾麗曳,此云慈氏,或云那。 —“Maitreya: the Sanskrit sound is Meidaliye, rendered here as ‘Clan of Lovingkindness,’ or alternatively na. He was born into the clan of lovingkindness, or his original nature practices lovingkindness. Alternatively, the form is yeni, in the feminine voice, because his mother cherished lovingkindness” 〔T39n1788 0188b08〕. |
| 34 | Separate explanation of Great Dharma Power | 「或自依法除諸障故,名大法力。」—“Alternatively, because he relies on the Dharma himself to remove all obstructions, he is named Great Dharma Power” 〔T39n1788 0188b28〕. |
| 35 | Separate correlations of discipline, concentration, and wisdom | 「戒福慧智,定通二種。 —“Discipline is merit, wisdom is knowledge, and concentration extends to both. Alternatively, concentration follows knowledge because it can give rise to knowledge” 〔T39n1788 0188c07〕. |
| 36 | Social identity of the Licchavis | 「舊云離車或云離咕毘,今云利車毘,有云王種,有云婆羅門姓。」—“Two earlier Han transcriptions were used; the present text uses a third. Some say the Licchavis are of royal stock, while others say they belong to a brahmin clan” 〔T39n1788 0189a27〕. |
| 37 | Another account of Licchavi social identity | 「或是王種亦名長者,如祇域長者。」—“Alternatively, they are of royal stock and are also called elders, like the elder Jīvaka” 〔T39n1788 0189b01〕. |
| 38 | Two explanations of the name Elāpattra | 「依此樹葉住,或食此葉,即善住龍王。」—“He dwells depending on the leaves of this tree, or eats these leaves; he is the dragon king Well-Dwelling” 〔T39n1788 0189c18〕. |
| 39 | Three explanations of the garuḍa king Fragrant-Elephant Power | 「力勢如香象,或有勢力能怖香象。 —“His power and might are like a fragrant elephant; alternatively, he possesses might that can terrify fragrant elephants. Or perhaps bird and elephant are different classes, in which case he is simply the king Fragrant Elephant” 〔T39n1788 0190a03〕. |
| 40 | Another name for the perfection of the time and discerning capacities | 「或名說儀圓滿,具包義故。」—“It is also called the perfection of the manner of teaching, because that name fully encompasses the meaning” 〔T39n1788 0190a24〕. |
| 41 | First question and answer on recited verse and responsive verse | 「問:諷誦、應頌,二頌何別? —“Question: what is the difference between recited verse and responsive verse? Answer: the ‘verse’ in responsive verse is teaching, while the ‘recitation’ in recited verse is speech” 〔T39n1788 0190b04〕. |
| 42 | Second question and answer on recited verse and responsive verse | 「問:云何諷誦是言? 答:《瑜伽》八十一云」—“Question: why is recited verse speech, while responsive verse is teaching? Answer: fascicle eighty-one of the Yogācārabhūmi says” 〔T39n1788 0190b05〕. The cited passage reads: 「應頌者,謂長行後宣伽陀。」—“Responsive verse means a gāthā proclaimed after prose” 〔T39n1788 0190b06〕. |
| 43 | Question and answer on why the four buddhas teach together | 「問:何故四佛同說此經? —“Question: why do the four buddhas teach this sūtra together? Answer: to reveal the four virtues together with Śākyamuni, thereby displaying the five dharmas of the Buddha-fruit—the four wisdoms and suchness—which completely encompass awakening and nirvāṇa” 〔T39n1788 0190c23〕. |
| 44 | First parallel explanation of the term evil karma | 「業之眷屬,亦立業名。 —“The retinue of karma is also given the name karma. Alternatively, karma produced by an evil cause and karma that brings an evil fruit are both called evil karma” 〔T39n1788 0191a05〕. |
| 45 | Second parallel explanation of the term evil karma | 「或無種性者,但除三途八難之業。」—“Alternatively, for those without a determinate nature, it removes only the karma of the three evil courses and the eight difficulties” 〔T39n1788 0191a07〕. |
| 46 | Separate explanation of all-knowing knowledge | 「或一切智非是二中一切智也。」—“Alternatively, this all-knowing knowledge is not the all-knowing knowledge that is one member of the pair” 〔T39n1788 0191a20〕. |

A lifespan about to end means that karma is exhausted and conditions have ceased, or that life is lost unjustly and violently; this is the suffering of death” 〔T39n1788 0191b02〕. |
| 48 | Separate correlations of reading, reciting, and upholding with the three wisdoms | 「或專注心不亂生思,餘是聞修,三慧具足。 —“Alternatively, concentrating the mind without distraction gives rise to reflection, while the remainder are hearing and cultivation, so the three wisdoms are complete. Again, bathing and putting on clean garments are the training in discipline; concentration is the training in samādhi; reading, reciting, and the rest are the training in wisdom” 〔T39n1788 0191b23〕. |
| 49 | Another explanation of which chapters are announced by the protecting deities | 「又解:正了知,即訶利底母神中標。 —“A further explanation: ‘right understanding’ is announced under the mother-deity Hārītī. As for the Right Treatise on Royal Dharma and King Good-Born chapters, both are announced in the verse ‘I shall teach this sūtra’; because they are likewise spoken by the Buddha, they are announced in one place” 〔T39n1788 0191c13〕. |
| 50 | Two explanations of the excellent fruit in the final verse | 「遠離諸苦難,非但離諸難,亦得涅槃果。或創標宗未說深果,但云人趣得離八難」—“‘Far removed from every suffering and difficulty’ means not only leaving difficulties behind but also attaining the fruit of nirvāṇa. Alternatively, because the central purport is only being announced initially and the profound fruit has not yet been taught, it says merely that in the human course one escapes the eight difficulties” 〔T39n1788 0192a23〕. |
Five Further Parallel Explanations Introduced by “Again”
| Sequence | Node | Huizhao’s text |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Shared and unshared dwelling places | 「又共不共,王舍城等,凡聖三乘之所共居;下明諸佛不共所居。」—“Again, there are shared and unshared places. Rājagṛha and the rest are shared dwelling places of ordinary and noble beings of the three vehicles; what follows reveals the unshared dwelling place of the buddhas” 〔T39n1788 0184a05〕. |
| 2 | Another reason only the royal city is named | 「又彼淨土非三乘人皆悉同見,據共見者且說王城。」—“Again, that pure land is not seen alike by all people of the three vehicles; speaking from what is seen in common, the text provisionally mentions only the royal city” 〔T39n1788 0184b01〕. |
| 3 | Reasons for listing the śrāvaka assembly | 「又準《大寶積經論》,三因緣故列聲聞眾:一於大乘中有疑令除、二有不定助成正信、三除所作已辦之心,令除智障得上果報。」—“Again, according to the Treatise on the Mahāratnakūṭa Sūtra, the śrāvaka assembly is listed for three reasons: first, to remove doubts concerning the Great Vehicle; second, to help those of indeterminate disposition establish right trust; and third, to remove the thought that what was to be done has already been completed, enabling them to remove the wisdom obstruction and attain a superior fruition” 〔T39n1788 0184b28〕. |
| 4 | Another reason they surpass the two vehicles | 「又了二空,彼唯了一,故逾二乘。」—“Again, they understand the two emptinesses, whereas those others understand only one; therefore they surpass the two vehicles” 〔T39n1788 0188a09〕. |
| 5 | Another explanation of abiding in awakening | 「又能為護法城,住持正法,云安住菩提。」—“Again, because they can protect the city of Dharma and maintain the True Dharma, they are said to abide in awakening” 〔T39n1788 0189b15〕. |
Concerning the time and place associated with samādhi, the commentary preserves four times and three places, one time and one place, and two times and two places. More than one reading path likewise appears concerning unlisted assemblies, the provisional or real status of the Buddha’s body, bodhisattva stages, great patience, the three natures, names, the three wisdoms, and the excellent fruit in the final verse. Together these branches reveal one point: the seven perfections are an analytic frame for reading the sūtra, not a device for compressing it into a single exclusive outline.
IV. Explanations of Various Masters
Cien · Huizhao’s Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King, T39n1788
Huizhao is the extant commentator who follows Yijing’s recension line by line. His treatment of this chapter begins with the seven perfections and explains in detail the virtues, names, and ritual conduct of the assembly and the twenty-four verses. On one side, his outline gathers the prose as the conditions of hearing the Dharma; on the other, it reads the verses as an advance announcement of the entire sūtra. Within the same commentary range, he also opens multiple paths of interpretation concerning provisional and real practitioners, stages, meanings of names, the three wisdoms, and the resulting benefits.
Tiantai · Zhiyi’s Words and Phrases of the Sūtra of Golden Light, T39n1785
Zhiyi comments on Dharmakṣema’s four-fascicle recension; his explanatory range for the Introduction is 0046b28–0053b19. He first lists the northern, southern, and Paramārtha explanations, then rejects cutting the introduction, main teaching, and circulation into mutually isolated blocks:
—“The present master says: divisions of the text are originally human arrangements. People all suppose that the introduction does not yet distinguish the Way and that circulation, being at the very end, cannot discuss the causes and fruits of teacher and disciples. This is not so. The three sections cannot be blocked off, severed, and isolated. The introduction originally introduces the main teaching and circulation, so the introduction has three meanings; the main teaching originally establishes the introduction and circulation as main, so the main teaching also has three meanings; circulation originally circulates the main teaching and introduction, so circulation too has three meanings” 〔T39n1785 0046c09〕.
He extends the boundary of the introduction from “Thus have I heard” into the Lifespan chapter, as far as the gathering of devas and dragons in the chamber of Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner. From “at that time, the four buddhas” through the Emptiness chapter he identifies the main teaching, and from the Four Kings chapter onward he identifies circulation 〔T39n1785 0046c19–0046c22〕. He then gives three sūtras as examples: 「如《維摩》無序品,序在正說中;《大品》正說在序品中;《涅槃》序分入正品中。」—“The Vimalakīrti has no introductory chapter, for its introduction is within the main teaching; in the Larger Prajñāpāramitā, the main teaching is within the introductory chapter; and in the Nirvāṇa Sūtra, the introductory section enters the chapter of the main teaching” 〔T39n1785 0046c26〕. His conclusion is therefore: 「今從義便,不得齊品分割也。」—“Here one must follow what is convenient according to meaning and may not divide the text uniformly at chapter boundaries” 〔T39n1785 0047a01〕.
Zhiyi also establishes three meanings of “introduction”: 「序有三義:一次緒、二敘述、三發起。」—“Introduction has three meanings: first, ordering the opening; second, narration; and third, occasioning” 〔T39n1785 0047a01〕. His textual boundaries follow the older recension: from “thus” onward is ordering the opening; from “at that time, the Tathāgata” onward is narration; and from “his chamber naturally became vast and adorned” onward is occasioning 〔T39n1785 0047a08–0047a10〕. Yijing’s recension adds a complete co-hearing assembly and the Buddha’s emergence from samādhi and observation of the audience, so the textual boundaries of the older recension are not mechanically transferred into the newer translation.
Sanlun · Jizang’s Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light, T39n1787
Jizang’s relevant commentary range for the Introduction is 0160b22–0161c17. Following chapter boundaries, he broadly divides the sūtra into three parts:
—“Within these four fascicles, the broad division has three sections. First, the Introduction chapter is the introductory-teaching section. Second, from the Lifespan chapter through the Giving Up the Body chapter is the main-teaching section. Third, the single Praise of the Buddha chapter is the circulation-teaching section” 〔T39n1787 0160b23〕.
His reasoning has two sides: the transforming teacher and those transformed. From the side of the transforming teacher, without an introductory teaching beings do not give rise to trust; without a main teaching their capacity is missed; and without circulation great compassion is lost: 「所以有此三段者,有二義:一就化主說。 —“There are two meanings behind these three sections. First, speaking from the transforming teacher: if there were no introductory teaching, beings would not give rise to trust. If teaching were suddenly given when they had no trust, beings would not receive it, and the Tathāgata would incur the fault of teaching in vain; therefore there is an introductory teaching. Once trust has arisen, if the Tathāgata did not teach, he would incur the fault of missing their capacity; therefore there is a main teaching. Once the main teaching has been revealed, if there were no circulation, the Tathāgata would incur the fault of lacking great compassion; therefore there is a circulation teaching” 〔T39n1787 0160b25〕.
From the side of those transformed, he establishes the three sections in the sequence of trust, understanding, and practice: 「第二約所化說者,眾生入道信心為初,故有序說;依信生解,故有正說;依解起行,故有流通也。」—“Second, speaking in terms of those transformed: when beings enter the Way, trust comes first, so there is an introductory teaching; understanding arises on the basis of trust, so there is a main teaching; and practice arises on the basis of understanding, so there is circulation” 〔T39n1787 0160c02〕. Jizang also identifies 「如是我聞」—“Thus have I heard” as the trust-attesting introduction and everything from “at one time” onward as the occasioning introduction 〔T39n1787 0160c05〕. This analysis likewise follows the older four-fascicle recension.
Zhiyi extends the introductory boundary into the Lifespan chapter according to meaning; Jizang follows the chapter boundary and identifies the first Introduction as the introductory-teaching section. One reveals the interpenetration of the three sections; the other reveals the sequence of trust, understanding, and practice. Both ancient readings are recorded within the transmission without adjudicating between them.
Song Tiantai · Zhili’s Record of the Words and Phrases of the Sūtra of Golden Light, T39n1786
Zhili’s subcommentary on Zhiyi’s Words and Phrases enters the text and establishes the three sections beginning at 「二、入文,二:初、定三分」—“Second, entering the text, in two parts: first, establishing the three sections” 〔T39n1786 0083b23〕; its direct explanation of the introductory section begins at T39n1786 0084b04. He explicitly says of Zhiyi’s division, 「今分三分,大同江南,但序盈半品」—“The present division into three sections largely agrees with the southern interpretation, except that the introduction extends half a chapter farther” 〔T39n1786 0084a07〕. He then asks, 「此等三經,或序入正、或正入序,諸師分解不以為疑,安得獨疑今判序分入〈壽量〉中耶?」—“In these three sūtras, the introduction may enter the main teaching or the main teaching may enter the introduction. The masters’ divisions raise no doubt; why should one doubt only the present judgment that the introductory section enters the Lifespan chapter?” 〔T39n1786 0084a25〕. His answer points directly to the distinction between meaning and title: 「品雖屬正,義當序分,豈順標題令義失耶?」—“Although the chapter belongs to the main teaching, its meaning functions as the introductory section. Could one follow the title and thereby lose the meaning?” 〔T39n1786 0084b03〕.
Zhili both carries forward Zhiyi’s cross-chapter introductory division and explicitly records that Yijing’s new translation lists a co-hearing assembly: 「若義淨新譯《最勝王經》,列同聞眾不異諸經。 —“As for Yijing’s newly translated Sūtra of the Supreme King, its listing of the co-hearing assembly does not differ from other sūtras. The great master knew from afar that the Sanskrit text would arrive, and therefore added this note” 〔T39n1786 0084c21〕. The first sentence records the structure of the new translation; the second is Zhili’s judgment that Zhiyi knew it from afar. The final entry in his record of the introduction is 「五、敘流通明教相。 —“Fifth, narrating circulation and clarifying the character of the teaching. The commentary refers briefly to the discussion above” 〔T39n1786 0103a19〕. The next line has already turned to the title of the Lifespan chapter.
Topical Exposition · Zhiyi T39n1783 and Zhili T39n1784
The Profound Meaning of the Sūtra of Golden Light and the Supplemental Record of the Profound Meaning discuss the sūtra’s name, substance, central purport, and function; they are not line-by-line commentaries on the Introduction. Zhiyi uses a sentence from the chapter as evidence for the sūtra’s name, citing 「是金光明,諸經之王」—“This is Golden Light, the king of sūtras” 〔T39n1783 0006a10〕 and immediately saying, 「創首標名,彌為可用。」—“Because the name is announced at the very beginning, it is all the more usable” 〔T39n1783 0006a11〕. In discussing substance, Zhili says: 「〈序品〉在初,故示法性體義備足,如來所游非三乘共故,無量甚深三諦圓妙故。」—“Because the Introduction stands first, it fully displays the meaning of Dharma-nature as substance: the sphere in which the Tathāgata ranges is not shared by the three vehicles, and the measureless, profound three truths are perfect and wondrous” 〔T39n1784 0043a03〕. In discussing function, he also cites 「一切種智而為根本,無量功德之所莊嚴,滅除諸苦與無量樂。」—“It serves as the basis of all-aspect knowledge, is adorned by measureless virtues, removes every suffering, and gives measureless happiness” 〔T39n1784 0044b14〕, immediately adding, 「今以此文明經力用。」—“The present passage clarifies the power and function of the sūtra” 〔T39n1784 0044b15〕. These are collateral readings of substance and function at the level of topical exposition; they are not transferred into a line-by-line exegesis of Yijing’s recension.
V. Terminology
Bhagavān. Yijing’s common introduction reads 「一時薄伽梵」—“at one time, the Bhagavān” 〔T16n0665 0403a07〕, while the other two recensions read “at one time, the Buddha.” The honorific used by each recension is returned to that recension.
The most purified, profound dharma-realm. The sūtra directly calls this the sphere of the buddhas and the dwelling place of the Tathāgata. Huizhao interprets “most purified” as freedom from the two obstructions, “profound” as not shared with the two vehicles, and “dharma-realm” as the intrinsic nature of all dharmas 〔T39n1788 0184a14〕. The scriptural sentence and the commentary’s interpretation illumine one another while remaining in distinct layers.
Perfection of the introduction and attestation of trust. Huizhao identifies the first and the perfection of the audience as the common introduction and attestation of trust, while identifying the remainder as the specific introduction and occasioning 〔T39n1788 0183c25〕. Zhiyi separately explains introduction through the three meanings of ordering the opening, narration, and occasioning; Jizang divides it into the trust-attesting and occasioning introductions. Each terminology has its own boundaries of analysis.
Licchavi. The sūtra lists 580 million Licchavi youths. Huizhao preserves variant transcriptions and accounts of their social identity: 「舊云離車或云離咕毘,今云利車毘,有云王種,有云婆羅門姓。」—“Two earlier Han transcriptions were used; the present text uses a third. Some say the Licchavis are of royal stock, while others say they belong to a brahmin clan” 〔T39n1788 0189a27〕. He further says, 「或是王種亦名長者,如祇域長者。」—“Alternatively, they are of royal stock and are also called elders, like the elder Jīvaka” 〔T39n1788 0189b01〕.
Elāpattra. Yijing’s recension uses the source character in 「𧫦羅葉龍王」—“the dragon king Elāpattra” 〔T16n0665 0403c13〕. The character 𧫦 is Unicode U+27AE6 and is preserved verbatim in the sūtra rather than replaced by a similar character. Huizhao’s citation also preserves 「蓮華龍王、𧫦羅葉龍王」—“the dragon king Lotus and the dragon king Elāpattra” 〔T39n1788 0189c12〕. His phonetic and semantic explanation reads: 「翳羅,此云樹。 —“Yiluo means tree here; bona means leaf. He dwells depending on the leaves of this tree, or eats these leaves; he is the dragon king Well-Dwelling” 〔T39n1788 0189c17〕. These are ancient transmitted phonetic glosses and do not alter the character form of the base text; the explanations of dwelling among or eating the leaves are both retained.
Garuḍa. The sūtra reads 「復有四萬九千揭路茶王,香象勢力王而為上首」—“There were also forty-nine thousand garuḍa kings, headed by the king Fragrant-Elephant Power” 〔T16n0665 0403c26〕. Huizhao says, 「鳥王眾:此云妙翅,下隨舊譯亦云金翅。」—“The assembly of bird kings: the term means wondrous-winged; below, following the older translation, it is also rendered golden-winged” 〔T39n1788 0190a02〕. The king Fragrant-Elephant Power further receives three explanations: power like a fragrant elephant, power able to terrify fragrant elephants, and a reading in which bird and elephant are separate classes 〔T39n1788 0190a03〕.
The afternoon and the ritual approach to the Buddha. The śrāvakas, bodhisattvas, and subsequently listed assemblies repeatedly approach the Buddha in the afternoon. The first complete description of the ritual is 「各於晡時從定而起,往詣佛所,頂禮佛足,右遶三匝,退坐一面。」—“Each emerged from samādhi in the afternoon, went to the Buddha, bowed at the Buddha’s feet, circumambulated him three times to the right, withdrew, and sat to one side” 〔T16n0665 0403a18〕. Huizhao analyzes this into four levels—time of arrival, emergence from samādhi, approach to the Buddha, and deportment upon arrival 〔T39n1788 0186b24〕. The fourfold analysis belongs to the commentary; the sequence of actions belongs to the sūtra.
Recited verse and responsive verse. —“Question: what is the difference between recited verse and responsive verse? Answer: the ‘verse’ in responsive verse is teaching, while the ‘recitation’ in recited verse is speech” 〔T39n1788 0190b04〕. The forty-eight verse lines following the prose form twenty-four verses, with two lines to each verse.
VI. Similes · Rhetoric
The great elephant king and the great dragon king. The virtues of the śrāvakas are illustrated by 「能善調伏如大象王」—“able to discipline themselves well, like a great elephant king” 〔T16n0665 0403a09〕, while the bodhisattvas’ majestic power is illustrated by 「有大威德,如大龍王」—“possessing great majestic virtue, like a great dragon king” 〔T16n0665 0403a21〕. The two similes belong to two different assemblies: the first reveals discipline, the second majestic virtue; their objects are not interchanged.
A vast assembly formed through lists of names. The sūtra first gives numbers, then praises virtues, lists names, and describes the ritual approach to the Buddha. It lists eleven great śrāvakas and separately notes that Ānanda remains at the stage of training; it unfolds by name fifty-three bodhisattvas, fourteen Licchavi youths, eight devas, eight dragon kings, Vaiśravaṇa as leader, and eight yakṣas. Garuḍas, gandharvas, asuras, kinnaras, mahoragas, seers of mountains, forests, rivers, and seas, kings, queens and consorts, and men and women of pure trust then gather together. The repeated bowing, rightward circumambulation, and withdrawal to sit turn the name lists from static catalogues into a movement of the assembly converging on the Buddha.
The king of sūtras. All three recensions call Golden Light the king of sūtras. Yijing’s recension says 「金光明妙法,最勝諸經王」—“the wondrous Dharma of Golden Light, supreme king among sūtras” 〔T16n0665 0404a08〕 and immediately unfolds this title through its profundity and rarity, the protection of the four buddhas, repentance and removal of offenses, freedom from suffering and attainment of happiness, protection by the deities, and the accumulation of merit through hearing and upholding.
The advance announcement in twenty-four verses. The twenty-four verses do not repeat the prose assembly; they lay out in advance what the sūtra will teach. They first announce the king of sūtras and the four buddhas, then repentance, removal of karma, freedom from calamity, and virtue; next they list the protectors of those who uphold the sūtra, and finally close with hearing, teaching, rejoicing, offering, reading, recitation, and a mind of reverence. Huizhao’s three major divisions, four sections, and seven topics are a close reading of this advance-announcement function 〔T39n1788 0190a28–0190c04〕.
VII. Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward
The seven perfections and the scene of hearing the Dharma. This chapter first brings to completion a trustworthy introduction, the Buddha’s dwelling, the audience capable of hearing, the cause constituted by their wish to hear, the time of emerging from samādhi, and the act of discerning capacities; only then does it give the twenty-four verses. Huizhao’s readings of one time and one place or two times and two places allow the same introductory scene to be read both as the Dharma assembly immediately before us and within the sūtra-wide composition of protection by the four buddhas.
The twenty-four verses and the chapters that follow. Huizhao takes the first line and a half to announce the Lifespan chapter. He associates “I shall further proclaim the wondrous Dharma” with the three bodies, “auspicious and supreme among forms of repentance” with repentance, and “purify and remove evil karma” with extinguishing karmic obstructions. He then connects “constantly give measureless happiness” with the chapters on the most purified grounds, praise through the lotus simile, and the Golden-Victory Dhāraṇī; takes “basis of all-knowing knowledge” to announce the reaffirmation of emptiness; and takes “adorned with every virtue” to announce fulfilling vows through emptiness 〔T39n1788 0190c04–0190c10〕. The subsequent sufferings, Dharma protectors, and benefits of hearing and upholding gather the themes of the main teaching and circulation into the Introduction in advance.
From the announcement of the four buddhas to Wonderful Banner’s question. The verses of this chapter list Akṣobhya in the east, Jeweled Appearance in the south, Amitāyus in the west, and Sound of the Heavenly Drum in the north. The next chapter immediately says of Wonderful Banner, 「是時妙幢菩薩獨於靜處,作是思惟」—“At that time, Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner, alone in a quiet place, reflected as follows” 〔T16n0665 0404c01〕. His thought is 「以何因緣,釋迦牟尼如來壽命短促,唯八十年?」—“For what reason is the lifespan of Tathāgata Śākyamuni so short, only eighty years?” 〔T16n0665 0404c02〕. The four buddhas then appear in Wonderful Banner’s chamber and answer his question concerning lifespan. This chapter first announces the four buddhas and the profound teaching that is difficult to hear; the next turns that announcement into a concrete question and response.
The Introduction begins with an assembly wishing to hear, and the twenty-four verses gather the themes of the whole sūtra into a single cluster. The Lifespan chapter then opens the first direct question and answer through Wonderful Banner’s doubt. From the assembly capable of hearing, to the person who asks, to the replies of the four buddhas and Śākyamuni Buddha: this is the first scriptural vein carried forward from the present chapter.
VIII. Placement of the Editions
- This translation and commentary takes Yijing’s Tang translation, T16n0665, as its base text. The title of Introduction, Chapter 1 is at 0403a06, and the chapter body is 0403a07–0404b26; at 0404b27 the title of the next chapter has already begun.
- The title of the Introduction in Dharmakṣema’s T16n0663 is at 0335b05, and its chapter body is 0335b06–0335c15. The title in the composite T16n0664 is at 0359c13, and its chapter body is 0359c17–0360a26. All three recensions contain an introductory chapter with the same title.
- Both four-character transposition notes under T16n0664 collation note n0359012 refer back to 0359c13 in the main text. The notes have no line labels of their own, so the note number is recorded together with the anchor in the main text to which it belongs.
- T16n0665 unfolds a longer named assembly than the other two recensions. All three share the scenes of the king of sūtras, the four buddhas, repentance, suffering, protection, and the benefits of hearing and upholding. The collation transmits only differences in detail, wording, and punctuation.
- Huizhao’s commentary range for the Introduction in T39n1788 is 0183c07–0192a25; 0192a26–0192b04 is fascicle-junction text. Zhiyi’s explanatory range in T1785 is 0046b28–0053b19; Jizang’s relevant range in T1787 is 0160b22–0161c17. Zhili’s T1786 enters the text at 0083b23, begins its direct explanation of the introductory section at 0084b04, and ends it at 0103a19.
- Zhiyi’s T1783 and Zhili’s T1784 belong to the level of topical exposition; T1785, T1787, and T1786 are respectively the line-by-line levels of Words and Phrases, commentary, and subcommentary on Words and Phrases. Their levels and attributions are not conflated.
- The only Extension-B Han character in the chapter body is
𧫦, Unicode U+27AE6, in 「𧫦羅葉龍王」—“the dragon king Elāpattra” 〔T16n0665 0403c13〕. The source text, the vernacular list of names, and the apparatus all preserve it verbatim. - The imperial preface beginning at 0403a03 before the chapter is established as a separate fascicle-front unit and is not mixed into the Introduction. The chapter itself is not subdivided into units, nor are the twenty-four verses separated into another chapter-level unit.
The three transmitted texts, Huizhao’s line-by-line commentary, and the Tiantai and Sanlun masters each retain their own level. Precisely through that layered transmission, the Introduction proceeds from a Dharma assembly whose conditions are complete into the questions and answers, repentance, protection, and circulation of all thirty-one chapters.
