Śāriputra asks what a dhāraṇī means, yet within his question he first says that it is neither a location nor a non-location. The Buddha then unfolds the answer in full: it is neither a dharma nor a non-dharma; neither past, future, nor present; neither a matter nor a non-matter; neither a condition nor a non-condition; neither an activity nor a non-activity. No dharma arises, and no dharma ceases.
After seven sets of negations, then, why is it still taught and still upheld?
The Buddha does not let the exchange end in silence. Precisely in order to benefit bodhisattvas, he says, this explanation is still made. He then establishes, one by one, the dhāraṇī’s efficacy, right path, purport of principle, and power, as well as the qualities, prohibitions, training, hidden intention, and birthplace of all buddhas. Continuous negation does not mean that nothing need be said. The absence of a single affirmative definition does not mean that there is no sequence one can practice.
Śāriputra immediately asks the Buddha to proclaim it, because bodhisattvas who can abide in it do not retreat from unsurpassed awakening, accomplish right vows, attain non-reliance and eloquence from their own nature, attain rare things, and abide on the noble path. The Buddha then names in turn those who attain the Dharma, those who support them, and those who hear and uphold it. A bodhisattva who attains this Dharma is to be honored; to make offerings to, serve, and supply that bodhisattva is to make offerings to a buddha. Other people who hear, uphold, recite, and give rise to faithful understanding should likewise receive reverence and offerings.
Only then does the Buddha proclaim the transmitted Han sounds of the dhāraṇī. The sūtra does not assign a newly invented meaning to every syllable.
After the proclamation, the text names a long expanse of time: one eon, a hundred eons, a thousand eons, and a hundred thousand eons, throughout which right vows have no end. The body is not harmed by blades or clubs, poison, water, fire, or ferocious animals. Even if someone filled ten asaṃkhyeyas of trichiliocosms with the seven treasures and also honored the buddhas for innumerable eons with the finest clothing, food, drink, and every kind of offering, the sūtra still compares this with the merit of upholding even one phrase of the dhāraṇī.
Twice the chapter speaks of 『母』—“mother.” At the beginning the dhāraṇī is called the mother of bodhisattvas; at the end it is called the mother of the buddhas of the past, future, and present. The sūtra does not invent a separate scene around the image. It lets us see only that this Dharma gate is not a name offered merely for conceptual understanding: it keeps vows from retreating, practice from breaking off, and people truly engaged in receiving and upholding it.
Why, then, after seven sets of negations is it still taught and still upheld? Because the text does not treat negation as the end of practice. It goes on to speak of benefit, establishment, attainment, offering, and correct upholding. Śāriputra first asks; the Buddha teaches for the sake of benefit; and finally Śāriputra and the assembly greatly rejoice and all vow to uphold it. The question is not sealed by a single affirmative definition. At the moment they willingly uphold the teaching, however, it becomes a cultivation they can continue to enact.

A vernacular rendering of Chapter 13, “The Stainless Dhāraṇī,” from fascicle seven of Yijing’s Tang translation of The Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King. The transmitted Han transcription of the dhāraṇī is preserved exactly as it appears in the base text: it is neither translated nor regularized.
The Stainless Dhāraṇī Is the Dharma Gate Cultivated by Bodhisattvas and Upheld by Bodhisattvas of the Past
At that time, the World-Honored One told the Venerable Śāriputra: “There is now a Dharma gate called the Stainless Dhāraṇī. It is a practice cultivated by bodhisattvas, a teaching received and upheld by bodhisattvas of the past, and the mother of bodhisattvas.”
When the World-Honored One had spoken, the Venerable Śāriputra addressed the Buddha: “World-Honored One, what is the meaning expressed by ‘dhāraṇī’? World-Honored One, a dhāraṇī is neither a location nor a non-location.”
The Buddha praised Śāriputra: “Excellent, excellent! Śāriputra, within the Great Vehicle you have already been able to arouse aspiration, understand the Great Vehicle through faith, and honor the Great Vehicle. As you have said, a dhāraṇī is neither a location nor a non-location; neither a dharma nor a non-dharma; neither past, future, nor present; neither a matter nor a non-matter; neither a condition nor a non-condition; neither an activity nor a non-activity. No dharma arises, and no dharma ceases.
“Nevertheless, this explanation is made for the benefit of bodhisattvas. This dhāraṇī is established in terms of efficacy, the right path, the purport of principle, and power. It is the qualities of all buddhas, the prohibitions of all buddhas, what all buddhas train in, the hidden intention of all buddhas, and the birthplace of all buddhas. It is therefore called the most wondrous Dharma gate of the Stainless Dhāraṇī.”
None of the Attainments of Abiding in This Dharma Is Omitted
When the Buddha had finished, Śāriputra again requested the teaching: “World-Honored One, I only ask the Well-Gone One to teach me this dhāraṇī Dharma. If bodhisattvas can abide in it, first, they will no longer retreat from unsurpassed awakening; second, they will accomplish right vows; third, they will attain non-reliance; fourth, they will attain eloquence from their own nature; fifth, they will attain rare things; and sixth, they will abide on the noble path. All six arise through attaining this dhāraṇī.”
The Buddha again praised him: “Excellent, excellent! So it is, so it is! It is as you say. If a bodhisattva attains this dhāraṇī, one should know that this person does not differ from a buddha. If someone makes offerings to, honors, serves, and supplies this bodhisattva, one should know that this is the same as making offerings to a buddha.
“Śāriputra, if other people hear this dhāraṇī, receive and uphold it, recite it, and give rise to faithful understanding, they too should receive the same reverence and offerings and should be regarded as not different from a buddha. Through these causes and conditions, they will attain the unsurpassed fruit.”
The World-Honored One Proclaims the Transmitted Han Sounds of the Dhāraṇī
At that time, the World-Honored One proclaimed the dhāraṇī before the assembly. What follows preserves the base text’s Han transcription, full-width spaces, and interlinear notes exactly; it is neither translated nor regularized:
「怛姪他 刪陀喇儞 嗢多喇儞 蘇三鉢囉底瑟恥哆 蘇那麼 蘇鉢喇底瑟恥哆鼻逝也 跋羅 薩底也 鉢喇底慎若 蘇阿 嚧訶 慎若那末底 嗢波彈儞 阿伐那末底 阿毘師彈儞 阿鞞毘耶訶囉 輸婆 伐底 蘇尼室唎多〔引〕薄虎郡社〔引〕阿毘婆䭾〔引〕莎訶」—the dhāraṇī’s transmitted Han sound sequence.
Inexhaustible Right Vows, Freedom from Bodily Harm, and the Comparison of Merit
The Buddha next told Śāriputra: “These are the phrases of the Stainless Dhāraṇī. If a bodhisattva can abide well in it and uphold it correctly, one should know that throughout one eon, a hundred eons, a thousand eons, or a hundred thousand eons, the right vows made by that bodhisattva will have no end. The bodhisattva’s body will not be harmed by blades or clubs, poison, water, fire, or ferocious animals.”
The Buddha explained the reason: “Śāriputra, this Stainless Dhāraṇī is the mother of the buddhas of the past, the mother of the buddhas of the future, and the mother of the buddhas of the present.
“Śāriputra, suppose that someone filled ten asaṃkhyeyas of trichiliocosms with the seven treasures and gave those treasures to the buddhas, and also honored the buddhas for innumerable eons with the finest clothing, food and drink, and every kind of offering. Suppose another person could receive and uphold even a single phrase of this dhāraṇī. The merit generated by the latter would be twice as great as the former offering.
“Why is this? Śāriputra, it is because this profound Dharma gate of the Stainless Dhāraṇī is the mother of all buddhas.”
When the World-Honored One had taught this Dharma gate, the Venerable Śāriputra and the whole assembly heard it, greatly rejoiced, and all vowed to receive and uphold it.

At the chapter’s very beginning, a Dharma gate is entrusted to Śāriputra. It has a name—the Stainless Dhāraṇī—and is a teaching cultivated by bodhisattvas and upheld by bodhisattvas of the past. Yet Śāriputra’s next question asks precisely what meaning this name expresses.
The Buddha’s answer is unusual. He speaks seven consecutive sets of negations, yet he does not therefore cease speaking. Instead, he says explicitly that this explanation is made in order to benefit bodhisattvas. The entire chapter advances within this tension: from asking about meaning to upholding, and from paired negations to inexhaustible right vows.
One Dharma Gate Placed at Once in the Present, the Past, and the Position of Mother of Bodhisattvas
The World-Honored One tells the Venerable Śāriputra that a Dharma gate now exists called the Stainless Dhāraṇī. He states three things in succession: it is a teaching cultivated by bodhisattvas, a teaching received and upheld by bodhisattvas of the past, and the mother of bodhisattvas.
Present cultivation and past upholding show that this Dharma gate is more than a name appearing for the first time. The text also calls it 『母』—“mother”—but constructs no further simile here and explains no scene of giving birth. It simply places 『是菩薩母』—“it is the mother of bodhisattvas”—at the position of the Dharma gate’s importance for bodhisattvas. Near the chapter’s end, it will speak again of the mother of the buddhas of the three times, so the opening and close illuminate one another.
Śāriputra immediately asks what meaning the term dhāraṇī expresses. At the same time he proposes that a dhāraṇī is neither a location nor a non-location. The question thus asks more than the literal meaning of a name: it has already brought the first pair of negations before the Buddha.
This opening also fixes the chapter’s principal persons and actions with great clarity. The World-Honored One is the teacher; the Venerable Śāriputra asks for the Dharma and requests its proclamation; and bodhisattvas are the subjects who cultivate and attain it. Only at the chapter’s end do the listeners expand from Śāriputra alone to Śāriputra and the whole assembly. The speaker does not change midway, nor does the text expand the identity of the practitioners into other classes. An exchange that begins by naming the Dharma ends in a shared vow to uphold it.
The verbs at the opening already reveal three temporal levels: a Dharma gate is now present, bodhisattvas cultivate it now, and bodhisattvas of the past once upheld it. 『是菩薩母』—“it is the mother of bodhisattvas”—immediately follows these three statements and closes the passage. Each placement belongs to the scripture itself. One cannot remember only the Dharma gate’s name while omitting who cultivates it, who upholds it, and how it is finally named.
Not One of the Seven Sets of Negations Can Be Reduced to 『什麼都不是』—“It Is Nothing at All”
The Buddha first praises Śāriputra for already being able to arouse aspiration within the Great Vehicle, understand it through faith, and honor it. He then confirms Śāriputra’s formulation. What follows is not the vague 『皆非』—“all are negated”—but seven ordered sets of statements.
First, it is neither a location nor a non-location. Second, it is neither a dharma nor a non-dharma. Third, it is neither past, future, nor present. Fourth, it is neither a matter nor a non-matter. Fifth, it is neither a condition nor a non-condition. Sixth, it is neither an activity nor a non-activity. Seventh, no dharma arises, and no dharma ceases.
The scripture lists location, dharma, the three times, matter, condition, activity, arising, and cessation one by one. If the reader retains only 『一切皆非』—“everything is negated”—the actual content of each set is swallowed up. If only the first half of each set is retained, the immediately following second half is lost. The first task here is to let all seven sets stand complete in their original order.
The syntax of the seven is not entirely uniform. The five sets concerning location, dharma, matter, condition, and activity take paired, opposed forms. The set concerning the three times lists past, future, and present in succession. The final set directly says that no dharma arises and no dharma ceases.
Before answering, the Buddha also affirms Śāriputra’s threefold attitude toward the Great Vehicle: he can already arouse aspiration, understand through faith, and honor it. These three are not interpretations of the seven negations, but praise offered before the Buddha formally answers. The movement into “as you have said” and the seven sets begins only after arousal, faithful understanding, and honor directed toward the Great Vehicle; this progression must not be skipped.
But the Buddha does not make ineffability the period at the end of the passage. He immediately says that this explanation is still made for the benefit of bodhisattvas. Speech is then established through four items—efficacy, the right path, the purport of principle, and power—and followed by five more: the qualities, prohibitions, training, hidden intention, and birthplace of all buddhas. Neither the four nor the five is replaced by a generic label. Only then is the teaching named the most wondrous Dharma gate of the Stainless Dhāraṇī.
The chapter thus does not cancel the Dharma gate, its efficacy, and its cultivation simply because it first sets out seven negations. The scripture’s own sequence is this: after the paired negations, it explicitly speaks of benefiting bodhisattvas; that statement of benefit takes form in four aspects of establishment, five aspects belonging to the buddhas, and the name of the Dharma gate. The inability to fix it in one proposition does not deprive what is said of its sequence.
The four and five also occupy distinct syntactic positions. Efficacy, the right path, the purport of principle, and power occur before 『安立』—“established.” The qualities, prohibitions, training, hidden intention, and birthplace of all buddhas occur after 『即是』—“it is precisely.” The first list has four items and the second five. The scripture neither merges the lists nor says that items on either side may be omitted.
What Śāriputra Requests Is the Complete Attainment of Bodhisattvas after They Abide in the Teaching
When Śāriputra again asks the Buddha to proclaim the dhāraṇī, he does not seek merely to hear a sequence of sounds. Within his request he already identifies six attainments of bodhisattvas who can abide in this Dharma: they no longer retreat from unsurpassed awakening, accomplish right vows, attain non-reliance, attain eloquence from their own nature, obtain rare things, and abide on the noble path. All six arise through attaining this dhāraṇī, and none is replaced by another.
The Buddha confirms his words with two declarations of “excellent” and two of “so it is.” A bodhisattva who attains this dhāraṇī, he says, should be known as 『與佛無異』—“not different from a buddha.” To make offerings to, honor, serve, and supply this bodhisattva is to make offerings to a buddha. The text then widens its scope to other listeners: anyone who hears this dhāraṇī, receives and upholds it, recites it, and gives rise to faithful understanding should receive the same reverence and offerings, be 『與佛無異』—“not different from a buddha”—and through these causes and conditions attain the unsurpassed fruit.
The sequence visible in the scripture is first a bodhisattva who attains the dhāraṇī, then the person who makes offerings to that bodhisattva, and then other people who hear, uphold, recite, and give rise to faithful understanding. Practitioner, supporter, and hearer-upholder each has a distinct place. One cannot retain only 『受持者有功德』—“the upholder has merit”—and let all the other persons disappear.
The acts of support are themselves listed in full: offering, honoring, serving, and supplying. For the other listeners, the text again gives a complete list: hearing, receiving and upholding, reciting, and giving rise to faithful understanding. The first list describes how another person treats a bodhisattva who has attained the Dharma; the second describes how listeners themselves approach the dhāraṇī. They are not the same list, but both are connected to reverence, offerings, and the unsurpassed fruit.
Śāriputra’s six requested attainments also correspond to the later display of excellence. The request first speaks of accomplishing right vows; the later passage extends the time to one eon, a hundred eons, a thousand eons, and a hundred thousand eons and says that those right vows have no end. The request first says that a bodhisattva can abide; the later passage speaks again of abiding well and upholding correctly. This is an internal connection between two passages in the same chapter; no meaning from outside the text is needed to perceive it.
『與佛無異』—“not different from a buddha”—also has a precise context in this chapter: it is spoken in connection with attaining the dhāraṇī, receiving reverent offerings, and attaining the unsurpassed fruit.
The Transmitted Sound Sequence Stands after the Request to Teach and before the Display of Excellence
After confirming Śāriputra’s words, the Buddha formally proclaims the dhāraṇī. The scripture preserves an entire passage of ancient Han transcription without explaining each syllable or translating it into a sequence of modern meanings. What it preserves is the order of its graphs and sounds, its full-width spaces, and its interlinear notes.
The sound sequence does not stand alone within the chapter. Before it come the name of the Dharma gate, the seven sets of negations, the four aspects of establishment, the five aspects belonging to the buddhas, the six attainments, and the acts of offering and hearing-upholding. After it come inexhaustible right vows, freedom from bodily harm, the motherhood of the buddhas of the three times, and the comparison of merit. The proclamation is placed after Śāriputra’s request has been confirmed and before the excellence of upholding is displayed; both sides remain connected through his exchange with the Buddha.
Before the sound sequence, the text says only that the World-Honored One then proclaimed the dhāraṇī. Afterward, the Buddha again calls the sequence 『此無染著陀羅尼句』—“these phrases of the Stainless Dhāraṇī.” The two statements clearly enclose the sounds within the dhāraṇī.
This placement also means that 『受持』—“receiving and upholding”—is more than remembering a sequence of sounds. The preceding text has already spoken of abiding, faithful understanding, recitation, and offering; the following passage speaks together of abiding well and upholding correctly.
From One Eon to a Hundred Thousand Eons: Right Vows, Bodily Protection, and the Comparison Each Remain Complete
After the proclamation, the Buddha calls these the phrases of the Stainless Dhāraṇī. If a bodhisattva can abide well and uphold correctly, then throughout one eon, a hundred eons, a thousand eons, and even a hundred thousand eons, the right vows that bodhisattva makes will have no end. The four scales of time increase successively, and the claim is that the right vows remain inexhaustible through them.
One eon, a hundred eons, a thousand eons, and a hundred thousand eons are all introduced in sequence by the same graph 『若』—“whether.” The text says that right vows remain inexhaustible throughout these durations; it does not state how many new vows are formed in each eon or provide a total number of vows.
The scripture also lists five external sources from which the body will suffer no harm: blades or clubs, poison, water, fire, and ferocious animals.
The Buddha explains the reason for these two benefits: the Stainless Dhāraṇī is the mother of buddhas of the past, the mother of buddhas of the future, and the mother of buddhas of the present. Each of the three times is named separately. By not hurriedly reducing them to 『三世諸佛母』—“mother of the buddhas of the three times”—one can see how the mother of bodhisattvas at the opening corresponds to the mother of buddhas here.
The inexhaustibility of right vows and freedom from bodily harm are adjacent yet distinct sentences. The first concerns vows and lists four durations; the second concerns the body and lists five kinds of harm. The scripture does not rewrite them as one kind of benefit. Only the following “why is this?” gathers both beneath the motherhood of the buddhas of the past, future, and present.
The final comparison also has two clearly defined sides. On one side, someone fills ten asaṃkhyeyas of trichiliocosms with the seven treasures and gives them to the buddhas, then honors them for innumerable eons with the finest clothing, food, drink, and every kind of offering. On the other side, someone can receive and uphold even a single phrase of this dhāraṇī. The text says that the merit produced by the latter is twice that of the former because this profound Dharma gate is the mother of all buddhas.
This does not disparage every act of generosity or every offering. It is a specific comparison made according to the quantities, offered goods, recipients, duration, and single phrase of upholding explicitly named in this chapter. If the seven treasures, the buddhas, clothing, food and drink, innumerable eons, or the single phrase upheld were omitted, the shape of the comparison would change.
The chapter opens no new theory at its end. After hearing the Dharma, the Venerable Śāriputra and the whole assembly greatly rejoice and all vow to receive and uphold it. At first Śāriputra asks what the phrases mean; at the end he and the assembly vow to uphold them. The seven sets of negations in between do not interrupt action but lead throughout to the request, hearing, abiding, and continued upholding.
Seeing Stainlessness through the Eye of Consciousness-Only
Everything above has followed what the “Stainless Dhāraṇī” chapter itself says. The Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King by the Ci’en master Huizhao offers another mirror through the lens of consciousness-only. The doctrinal divisions, three natures, two truths, stages, and classifications of cultivation below all belong to an old master’s interpretation: the mirror is not the scripture.
The commentator begins with three approaches—the chapter’s occasion, the explanation of its name, and the resolution of difficulties—and then divides the chapter itself into six parts: the Buddha identifies its name and theme; question and answer address name and substance; Śāriputra asks the Buddha to set it forth; the Buddha praises him before proclaiming it; the Buddha displays its excellence and exhorts cultivation; and the assembly hears the teaching, rejoices, and studies it. Huizhao reads three neighboring chapters as three modes of protection: the preceding chapter protects and supports through offerings; this chapter protects practitioners so that they leave defilement and do not retreat; and the next protects them so that they leave obstructions and obtain what they seek. This is the commentator’s navigation, not a reason for the chapter division stated by the scripture itself.
The commentary does not adjudicate the dhāraṇī as belonging uniquely to one class. Huizhao first reads it as a dhāraṇī that enables bodhisattvas to attain patience regarding the non-arising of dharmas, then proposes a spell-formula of retention, and finally permits both to apply because the scripture does not distinguish between them. He explains “stainless” through the most purified dharma-realm and freedom from defilement, abiding, and attachment. His judgment concerning the old title 〈銀主〉 remains one ancient interpretation and cannot be used to delete or alter the title of another Han translation.
In the mirror, the seven sets of negations are read successively as existence and emptiness, what can and cannot be expressed, the three times, matter and principle, conditioned and unconditioned, permanent and impermanent, and characteristic and non-characteristic. The overall judgment likewise retains several paths: they may be read through the perfectly-accomplished nature, through the wholly-imagined and ultimate truth, through negation and affirmation according to the two truths, or across all three natures. The commentary gathers the sūtra’s purport under the thought of true ultimate truth in which the way of words is cut off, yet preserves all these branching routes rather than deciding on a single meaning for the reader.
For the four aspects of establishment, Huizhao explains efficacy through its function of attaining the fruit, the right path through right principle free from extremes, the purport of principle through the meaning of the Dharma upheld, and power through the Dharma’s potency. He then matches the five aspects belonging to the buddhas with qualities, freedom from faults, what is studied, the profound and hidden, and the birthplace of a buddha-body. All these item-by-item supplements belong to the mirror.
For the attainments requested by Śāriputra, Huizhao first explains six items, then retains an alternative that reads non-reliance together with eloquence from one’s own nature and thus totals five. He also preserves both a general allocation and an item-by-item allocation to stages. 『與佛無異』—“not different from a buddha”—is limited by future certain attainment and equality in the principle realized; it does not directly equate an upholder’s present stage of fruition with buddhahood.
When displaying excellence and exhorting cultivation, Huizhao explains abiding well by taking the dhāraṇī as what one relies upon, and correct upholding as practices that arise in reliance upon it. He further allocates correct receiving and correct upholding to wisdom from hearing and wisdom from reflection and cultivation. Inexhaustible right vows belong to inward retention; freedom from harm by blades or clubs, poison, water, fire, and ferocious animals belongs to freedom from invasive external conditions. All these classifications remain within the attributed mirror.
Looking back through the mirror, the chapter neither uses the severing of the path of words to cancel cultivation nor uses benefit and protection to fix the meaning of its phrases. The commentator lets the layered readings of the seven negations, the multiple allocations of the six attainments, and the internal and external benefits remain distinguishable. The scripture itself continues by carrying forward from question to teaching, hearing, and upholding. The mirror clarifies paths of meaning; the sūtra remains at the center.

Placement of the whole chapter. This chapter uses Yijing’s T16n0665 as its base text. Although “The Silver-Lord Dhāraṇī,” Chapter 11, in the composite T16n0664 bears a different title, its chapter body corresponds in the same sequence to the present chapter. The extant nineteen chapters of Dharmakṣema’s T16n0663 contain no such chapter. Huizhao’s T39n1788 has a line-by-line principal commentary on this chapter, while the four-fascicle recensions commented upon by Zhiyi and Jizang have no line-by-line commentary on it. What follows transmits in full the prose differences between the two recensions, the eighteen sound-forms and their closing formula, the multiple readings within Huizhao’s single commentary, and the presence or absence of commentary in the designated ancient works. One transmission is not used to correct another.
I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
Chapter Boundaries, Fascicle Placement, and Principal Commentary
Fascicle seven of Yijing’s recension is titled 「金光明最勝王經卷第七」—“The Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King, Fascicle Seven” 〔T16n0665 0432c13〕, with the translator attribution 「大唐三藏沙門義淨奉 制譯」—“Translated under imperial decree by the Tripiṭaka Master and śramaṇa Yijing of the Great Tang” 〔T16n0665 0432c15〕. The present title is 「無染著陀羅尼品第十三」—“The Stainless Dhāraṇī, Chapter 13” 〔T16n0665 0432c16〕. Its body begins at 0432c17 and ends at 0433b04; at 0433b05 the title 「如意寶珠品第十四」—“The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel, Chapter 14” 〔T16n0665 0433b05〕 has already begun.
Huizhao’s principal commentary occurs in fascicle five of his work, whose authorial attribution reads 「翻經沙門慧沼撰」—“Composed by the scripture-translating śramaṇa Huizhao” 〔T39n1788 0286b13, fifth occurrence〕. The title of the principal commentary is 「無染著陀羅尼品第十三」—“The Stainless Dhāraṇī, Chapter 13” 〔T39n1788 0296b25〕. Its text begins at 0296b26 and its final outline unit ends at 0299b18; at 0299b19 the title 「如意寶珠品第十四」—“The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel, Chapter 14” 〔T39n1788 0299b19〕 has already begun. The title of this chapter also occurs elsewhere in the whole commentary at 0176a19, 0179b06, 0181c15, 0181c26, and 0182c04, but those occurrences belong to general discussion of the whole sūtra, chapter lists, or the sequence by which chapters arise. None is treated as the beginning of the line-by-line principal commentary on this chapter.
Huizhao’s Three Approaches and Six Major Passages
Huizhao first establishes 「無染著陀羅尼品,三門分別:一來意、二釋名、三解難」—“The Stainless Dhāraṇī chapter is distinguished through three approaches: first, the reason for its coming; second, explanation of the name; and third, resolution of difficulties” 〔T39n1788 0296b26〕. He then outlines the whole chapter: 「大文分六,一佛標名宗、二問答名體、三請佛陳說、四讚仰為宣、五顯勝勸修、六聞教喜學。」—“The major text is divided into six: first, the Buddha identifies the name and theme; second, question and answer address name and substance; third, Śāriputra asks the Buddha to set it forth; fourth, the Buddha praises him before proclaiming it; fifth, the Buddha displays its excellence and exhorts cultivation; and sixth, the assembly hears the teaching, rejoices, and studies it” 〔T39n1788 0297b24〕.
| Huizhao’s major passage | Range in Yijing | Opening words of the sūtra | Meaning of Huizhao’s outline |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. The Buddha identifies the name and theme | 0432c17–0432c19 | 「爾時,世尊告具壽舍利子」—“At that time, the World-Honored One told the Venerable Śāriputra” 〔T16n0665 0432c17〕 | 「有七:一明教主;二所逗機;三標呪名;四指應學;五舉曾勸;六明學意」—“There are seven: first, clarifying the teacher; second, those whose capacities are addressed; third, identifying the name of the formula; fourth, indicating who should train; fifth, citing those formerly exhorted; and sixth, clarifying the intent of training” 〔T39n1788 0297b27〕 |
| 2. Question and answer address name and substance | 0432c19–0433a02 | 「說是語已,具壽舍利子白佛言」—“When these words had been spoken, the Venerable Śāriputra addressed the Buddha” 〔T16n0665 0432c19〕 | 「下問答名體,初問、後答。」—“Below, question and answer address name and substance: first the question, then the answer” 〔T39n1788 0297c04〕 |
| 3. Śāriputra asks the Buddha to set it forth | 0433a02–0433a06 | 「作是語已,舍利子白佛言」—“Having spoken these words, Śāriputra addressed the Buddha” 〔T16n0665 0433a02〕 | 「下第三請佛陳說,有二:初請說」—“Below is the third passage, asking the Buddha to set it forth; it has two parts: first, the request that it be taught” 〔T39n1788 0298b19〕 |
| 4. The Buddha praises him before proclaiming it | 0433a06–0433a20 | 「佛告舍利子」—“The Buddha told Śāriputra” 〔T16n0665 0433a06〕 | 「下第四讚印為宣,有三:初讚印、次更歎、後正宣。」—“Below is the fourth passage, praise and confirmation before proclamation; it has three parts: first, praise and confirmation; next, further commendation; and last, the direct proclamation” 〔T39n1788 0299a06〕 |
| 5. The Buddha displays its excellence and exhorts cultivation | 0433a21–0433b03 | 「佛告舍利子」—“The Buddha told Śāriputra” 〔T16n0665 0433a21〕 | 「下第五顯勝勸修,有二:初讚法功能、後校量勝劣。」—“Below is the fifth passage, displaying excellence and exhorting cultivation; it has two parts: first, praising the Dharma’s functions, and then comparing superiority and inferiority” 〔T39n1788 0299b01〕 |
| 6. The assembly hears the teaching, rejoices, and studies it | 0433b03–0433b04 | 「時具壽舍利子及諸大眾聞是法已」—“At that time, after the Venerable Śāriputra and the great assembly had heard this Dharma” 〔T16n0665 0433b03〕 | 「下第六大段聞教喜學。」—“Below is the sixth major passage: hearing the teaching, rejoicing, and studying it” 〔T39n1788 0299b18〕 |
These six divisions serve only as navigation in the apparatus and in the concluding section of the exposition. The chapter body is short and belongs to a single exchange, so no additional sectional headings are inserted into the reader text.
II. Alternate Translations · Collation of the Three Translations
Textual State of the Three Designated Chinese Translations
| Chinese translation | State of this chapter | Chapter boundaries |
|---|---|---|
| Yijing T16n0665 | Present, titled 「無染著陀羅尼品第十三」—“The Stainless Dhāraṇī, Chapter 13” 〔0432c16〕 | 0432c17–0433b04 |
| Composite T16n0664 | Present, titled 「銀主陀羅尼品第十一」—“The Silver-Lord Dhāraṇī, Chapter 11” 〔0386a08〕; its body corresponds to Yijing’s | 0386a09–0386b21 |
| Dharmakṣema T16n0663 | No title “Stainless,” “Non-Attached,” or “Silver Lord” among its extant nineteen chapters | Chapter-title range 0335b05–0358a02 |
The different title and corresponding body can be seen directly at both ends of the two texts. The composite recension begins 「有法本名不染著陀羅尼」—“There is a Dharma text named the Non-Attached Dhāraṇī” 〔T16n0664 0386a11〕, while Yijing says 「今有法門,名無染著陀羅尼」—“There is now a Dharma gate called the Stainless Dhāraṇī” 〔T16n0665 0432c17〕. After the formula, the composite recension again says 「此是陀羅尼句,名不染著。」—“These are dhāraṇī phrases named Non-Attached” 〔T16n0664 0386b11〕, while Yijing at the same point reads 「此無染著陀羅尼句」—“these phrases of the Stainless Dhāraṇī” 〔T16n0665 0433a21〕. In both, Śāriputra asks about the meaning of the phrases; paired negations, upholding and offerings, the sound transcription, bodily protection, motherhood of the buddhas of the three times, and a comparison of merit then follow in the same order. “Silver Lord” is therefore a positive alternate-translation witness to the present chapter.
Translator Attribution in the Fascicle Containing “Silver Lord”
Fascicle six of the composite edition reads in sequence 「合部金光明經卷第六」—“Composite Sūtra of Golden Light, Fascicle Six” 〔T16n0664 0386a04〕, 「隋大興善寺沙門釋寶貴合」—“Compiled by the śramaṇa Baogui of Daxingshan Monastery in the Sui” 〔T16n0664 0386a06〕, and 「隋闍那崛多譯」—“Translated by Jñānagupta of the Sui” 〔T16n0664 0386a07〕. Only on the following line does the title “The Silver-Lord Dhāraṇī,” Chapter 11, appear. At 0386b22 the next chapter, “The Goddess of Great Eloquence,” Chapter 12, begins and carries a separate attribution, 「北涼三藏曇無讖譯」—“Translated by the Tripiṭaka Master Dharmakṣema of the Northern Liang” 〔T16n0664 0386b23〕. According to the direct attribution within the fascicle containing the present chapter, “Silver Lord” is therefore assigned to Jñānagupta, while Baogui is the compiler. The modern shorthand “Jñānagupta supplemented two chapters” is not fabricated as a quotation from the ancient preface.
The critical notes at the same location are preserved as a distinct layer. The Taishō main text at 0386a06 reads 「釋寶貴合」—“compiled by the monk Baogui” 〔T16n0664 0386a06〕; the Song and Gong editions read “inserted by Baogui,” while the Yuan and Ming editions read “inserted by Baogui in consultation with the Indian Tripiṭaka Master Zhìdé.” The received text at 0386a07 reads 「隋闍那崛多譯」—“translated by Jñānagupta of the Sui” 〔T16n0664 0386a07〕; the original Taishō reading has a graphic variant in Jñānagupta’s name, while the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Gong editions omit the attribution. These readings are all recorded without adjudicating which is superior.
Baogui’s preface gives the following original wording for the discovery and translation of this chapter: 「至開皇十七年,法席小間,因勸請北天竺揵陀羅國三藏法師——此云志德——重尋後本,果有〈囑累品〉,復得〈銀主陀羅尼品〉。 —“In the seventeenth year of Kaihuang, during a brief interval in the Dharma assembly, [we] accordingly requested the Tripiṭaka Master from Gandhāra in northern India—whose name here means Zhìdé—to search the later text again. It indeed contained the ‘Entrustment’ chapter, and the ‘Silver-Lord Dhāraṇī’ chapter was also obtained. Thus we know that the sources of the Dharma canon had become dispersed, their streams divided into separate branches; those inheriting and transmitting the downstream current could hardly possess it in full” 〔T16n0664 0359c02〕. —“Relying on the Tripiṭaka Master’s luminous wisdom and profound learning, broadly penetrating both Buddhist and non-Buddhist scriptures and treatises, translation was undertaken at Daxingshan Monastery in the capital. Together with the portions previously produced, it was combined into twenty-four chapters and written in eight fascicles. The scholar Fei Changfang of Chengdu received it in writing, and the śramaṇa Yancong of Riyan Monastery, learned in Sanskrit, collated and refined it” 〔T16n0664 0359c06〕. The preface’s wording “searched the later text again,” “was also obtained,” and “translation was undertaken” is transcribed as it stands. The chapter’s attribution is separately grounded in the direct attribution within its fascicle.
Chapter-List Evidence for the Absence of This Chapter from T663
The nineteen extant chapter titles of T663 are listed below in full. The table contains no title “Stainless,” “Non-Attached,” or “Silver Lord.” Baogui’s preface separately says that Dharmakṣema’s recension 「為四卷,止十八品」—“comprised four fascicles and ended with eighteen chapters” 〔T16n0664 0359b21〕. That is the historical layer reported by the ancient preface. The extant file in fact includes “Entrustment,” Chapter 19. The two layers do not rewrite one another.

A literal search of the extant electronic T663 for “Stainless Dhāraṇī,” “Non-Attached Dhāraṇī,” “Silver-Lord Dhāraṇī,” “Stainless,” “Non-Attached,” and “Silver Lord” returns zero occurrences for each. The general term “dhāraṇī” occurs only in a stanza of the “Repentance” chapter: 「諸陀羅尼,十力世尊,我當成就。」—“The dhāraṇīs and the World-Honored One possessed of the ten powers: I shall accomplish them” 〔T16n0663 0337b15〕. This is neither the title nor the body of the present chapter.
Complete Table of Literal Prose Differences between the Two Recensions
The table below follows the shared sequence and lists every prose alignment enumerated in the research record. The identical three-times negation is also retained so that the seven-set sequence does not become incomplete merely because only differences were listed. Nor may Yijing’s 「䭾」—transmitted Han sound-form 〔T16n0665 0433a20〕 or its three 〔引〕 lengthening notes be regularized.
III. Scriptural Grounds for the Consciousness-Only Meaning (the Point of the Eye)
This topic uses Huizhao’s Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King as its mirror. Every outline, resolution of difficulty, and doctrinal correlation is attributed to Huizhao and is not rewritten as something stated directly by Yijing’s sūtra text.
1. The sequence of protection across three chapters. In his commentary on the preceding chapter, Huizhao first says, 「此下三品明經可尊,行者得護,初一天護、後二呪護。」—“The next three chapters clarify that the sūtra is worthy of reverence and that practitioners obtain protection: first comes protection by devas, followed by protection through two formulas” 〔T39n1788 0287c23〕. At the present chapter he further outlines, 「就〈四王護國〉等三品明守護中,有三:一令守護供養、二令離染不退、三令離障如意。 —“Within the three chapters beginning with ‘The Four Kings Protect the Nation,’ which clarify protection, there are three: first, causing protection and offerings; second, causing freedom from defilement and non-retrogression; and third, causing freedom from obstructions and fulfillment of wishes. The preceding chapter has already clarified protection and offerings; this one clarifies causing freedom from defilement and non-retrogression” 〔T39n1788 0296c03〕. This is an ancient commentator’s navigation across three chapters. The present sūtra chapter itself speaks directly only of the dhāraṇī, its upholding, and the attainments that follow.
2. The name Stainless. Huizhao says, 「梵云仳[跳-兆+東]𪏭沙,此云無染著,舊云銀主者非也。」—“The Sanskrit sound-form is transmitted as 仳[跳-兆+東]𪏭沙; here it means Stainless. The older rendering ‘Silver Lord’ is incorrect” 〔T39n1788 0296c13〕. He further says, 「所弘之法從最清淨法界平等所流,復由呪力能令離染無所住著,故云無染著。」—“The Dharma propagated flows equally from the most purified dharma-realm; moreover, through the formula’s power it can cause freedom from defilement, without abiding or attachment. It is therefore called Stainless” 〔T39n1788 0296c14〕. “The older rendering ‘Silver Lord’ is incorrect” is one ancient commentator’s interpretation. It cannot be used to delete the positive witness of T664’s “Silver Lord” or to adjudicate superiority between the two recensions.
3. Multiple classifications of the dhāraṇī coexist. Huizhao first says 「答:是能令菩薩得無生忍陀羅尼」—“Answer: it is a dhāraṇī capable of enabling bodhisattvas to attain patience regarding non-arising” 〔T39n1788 0296c17〕. He then says 「或是神呪總持」—“Alternatively, it is a spell-formula of retention” 〔T39n1788 0296c24〕, and concludes with 「或可通二,文無簡故。」—“Alternatively, it may apply to both, because the text makes no distinction” 〔T39n1788 0296c29〕. A dhāraṇī of patience regarding non-arising, a spell-formula of retention, and the third reading that permits both are all preserved. The commentary is not adjudicated into a single class.
4. Commentary on the seven sets of negations. Huizhao explains the seven in sequence through freedom from existence and emptiness, freedom from the expressible and inexpressible, the three times, matter and principle, conditioned and unconditioned, permanent and impermanent, and characteristic and non-characteristic. He also preserves layered readings through the perfectly-accomplished, the wholly-imagined and ultimate truth, negation and affirmation according to the two truths, and all three natures. These are interpretations in the mirror. They therefore appear only in the apparatus and the final section of the exposition and are not poured downward into the literal definition of the sūtra’s words.
5. Four aspects of establishment and five items belonging to the buddhas. For 「功用正道理趣勢力」—“efficacy, the right path, the purport of principle, and power” 〔T16n0665 0432c28〕, Huizhao explains in order the function of attaining the fruit, right principle free from extremes, the meaning of the Dharma upheld, and the Dharma’s potency. He then explains one by one the qualities, prohibitions, training, hidden intention, and birthplace of the buddhas. The sūtra lists four items and five items; the commentary interprets them. The two layers do not replace one another.
6. Attainments requested in the plea for proclamation. The sūtra lists six: non-retrogression, right vows, non-reliance, eloquence from one’s own nature, rare things, and abiding on the noble path. Huizhao first interprets them as six items, while also preserving another reading that combines them into five and another that assigns them stage by stage. Both forms are detailed under the next topic. For “not different from a buddha,” he limits the meaning with 「以證得者如佛所得,必當得故、理平等故。」—“What is realized is like what the Buddha attained: because it will certainly be attained, and because the principle is equal” 〔T39n1788 0299a11〕. This does not directly rewrite the present fruition-stage of an upholder as buddhahood.
7. Abiding well and upholding correctly. —“To abide well is to take this formula as one’s reliance; to uphold correctly is to give rise to Dharma-practice in reliance upon it. Correct receiving is wisdom from hearing; correct upholding is wisdom from reflection and cultivation” 〔T39n1788 0299b04〕. He further divides the benefits into the inexhaustibility of right vows and freedom from invasive external dangers. These are the ancient commentary’s classifications of cultivation and benefit. The blades or clubs, poison, water, fire, and ferocious animals listed by the sūtra must still each be preserved.
IV. Explanations of Various Masters
Every Multiple and Supplementary Reading within Huizhao’s Single Commentary
The following table records every multiple reading in the principal commentary on this chapter that is expressly introduced with “alternatively,” “also,” or a comparable branch. Each side is retained; the smoother reading is not used to delete the other.
| Content node | Coexisting readings | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Classification of the dhāraṇī | 「或是神呪總持」—“Alternatively, it is a spell-formula of retention” 〔T39n1788 0296c24〕; 「或可通二,文無簡故。」—“Alternatively, it may apply to both, because the text makes no distinction” 〔T39n1788 0296c29〕 | 0296c24; 0296c29 |
| Four positions on the substance of retention | 「有依因出體,即說是定」—“Some establish its substance according to the cause and thus say it is concentration” 〔T39n1788 0297a03〕; 「有依能簡擇出體,即說是智」—“Some establish its substance according to the capacity for discernment and thus say it is wisdom” 〔T39n1788 0297a04〕; 「有依記憶出體,即說是念」—“Some establish its substance according to recollection and thus say it is mindfulness” 〔T39n1788 0297a04〕; 「有依果出體,即以所持之法名為總持」—“Some establish its substance according to the result and thus name the Dharma upheld ‘retention’” 〔T39n1788 0297a05〕 | 0297a03–0297a05 |
| Two sentences cited together from the Treatise on the Great Perfection of Wisdom | 「以禪定得智慧火故。」—“Because through meditative concentration one obtains the fire of wisdom” 〔T39n1788 0297a07〕; it further cites 「智慧在菩薩心中名般若,小乘人之心中名道品,不忘人心中名陀羅尼。」—“Wisdom in the mind of a bodhisattva is called prajñā; in the mind of a person of the lesser vehicle it is called factors of the path; in the mind of one who does not forget, it is called dhāraṇī” 〔T39n1788 0297a07〕. Huizhao accordingly says that concentration and wisdom are each established according to meaning | 0297a07–0297a10 |
| Both spell-formula retention and retention that attains patience can be explained from their cause | In the passage on the efficacious power of spell-formula retention, Huizhao says 「據因而說,非是剋體。」—“This is explained with reference to the cause and is not a definitive account of its substance” 〔T39n1788 0297a11〕. The Yogācārabhūmi says 「得忍總持是妙慧」—“Retention that attains patience is wondrous wisdom” 〔T39n1788 0297a22〕, which the commentary likewise explains from the cause | 0297a11; 0297a22 |
| Three modes through which retention is attained | The commentary cites the Mahāyānasūtrālaṃkāra: 「得有三種:一報得;二習得,由現聞持力得故;三修得,由依定力得故。」—“Attainment has three modes: first, attainment through retribution; second, attainment through habituation, because it is attained through the power of presently hearing and retaining; and third, attainment through cultivation, because it is attained in dependence upon the power of concentration” 〔T39n1788 0297a12〕 | 0297a12–0297a13 |
| Formula that attains patience and the substance that retains | 「所持之呪及能持體俱以念慧為體」—“Both the formula upheld and the substance capable of upholding have mindfulness and wisdom as their substance” 〔T39n1788 0297a18〕; 「或但能持以念慧為體,所持呪非」—“Alternatively, only the capacity to uphold has mindfulness and wisdom as its substance; the formula upheld does not” 〔T39n1788 0297a19〕; 「或呪是因,由此呪力能得四種總持」—“Alternatively, the formula is the cause, and through its power one can attain the four kinds of retention” 〔T39n1788 0297a20〕 | 0297a18–0297a20 |
| Near and distant causes of retention | 「答:因有遠近,定慧近因。」—“Answer: causes are distant or near; concentration and wisdom are the near causes” 〔T39n1788 0297b08〕. Four further items—not craving desires, not envying another’s excellence, giving equally without regret, and deeply delighting in right Dharma—conclude with 「此四遠因。」—“These four are distant causes” 〔T39n1788 0297b10〕 | 0297b08–0297b10 |
| Stages at which the four retentions are attained | Following the Yogācārabhūmi, the commentary first assigns retention that attains patience to the stages before the grounds and the others to entry into the grounds. It then cites positions assigning them to the third and ninth grounds and says the stage is not fixed because of differences in superiority and inferiority, completeness and incompleteness. It further says 「若約初證理,得俱在初地」—“If considered according to the initial realization of principle, all are attained at the first ground” 〔T39n1788 0297b18〕, 「約修習得,俱通地前」—“If considered according to attainment through cultivation and habituation, all extend to the stages before the grounds” 〔T39n1788 0297b19〕, and 「約任運得,俱八地上」—“If considered according to spontaneous attainment, all occur from the eighth ground upward” 〔T39n1788 0297b19〕 | 0297b11–0297b20 |
| Śāriputra’s stage of setting out | One account says 「若約七地過種姓地,得在勝解行地。」—“If considered according to the seven stages, he has passed the lineage-ground and is at the stage of the practice of resolute understanding” 〔T39n1788 0297c20〕. Another says 「若約五位,未住資糧位,但在善法欲,十信方得在資糧故。」—“If considered according to the five stages, he does not yet abide at the stage of provisions but remains only in the aspiration for wholesome dharmas, because only with the ten faiths does one enter the stage of provisions” 〔T39n1788 0297c21〕 | 0297c20–0297c22 |
| The question raises only one set | One reading takes the first phrase as indirectly revealing the others. It also says 「或舍利分悟、世尊具悟,故說有多少。」—“Alternatively, Śāriputra understands in part while the World-Honored One understands completely; therefore what they state differs in amount” 〔T39n1788 0297c10〕 | 0297c10 |
| Neither a location nor a non-location | 「非方處者離有,非非方處者離空。」—“‘Neither a location’ means freedom from existence; ‘nor a non-location’ means freedom from emptiness” | 0297c08 |
| Neither a dharma nor a non-dharma | 「非法非所詮,非非法非是不離非詮之法,是智證故。」—“‘Neither a dharma’ means it is not what is expressed; ‘nor a non-dharma’ means it is not a dharma inseparable from the inexpressible, because it is realized by wisdom” | 0298a01 |
| The three times | 「第三離三世,以常故非三世。」—“Third is freedom from the three times: because it is permanent, it is not of the three times” 〔T39n1788 0298a02〕. Huizhao supplements that there should also be “not non-past” and so forth, omitted because the sūtra reveals them indirectly and abbreviates them | 0298a02 |
| Matter and non-matter | 「第四事理對。」—“Fourth is the pairing of matter and principle” 〔T39n1788 0298a04〕. He further takes “not non-matter” as not being separate from dharmas of matter | 0298a04 |
| Condition and non-condition | 「第五為無為對。」—“Fifth is the pairing of conditioned and unconditioned” 〔T39n1788 0298a05〕. One reading discloses the not-non-conditioned through a revealing cause; another says 「或不離緣生法故」—“Alternatively, because it is not separate from dependently arisen dharmas” 〔T39n1788 0298a06〕 | 0298a05–0298a06 |
| Activity and non-activity | 「第六常無常對。」—“Sixth is the pairing of permanent and impermanent” | 0298a07 |
| Arising and cessation | 「第七相非相對。」—“Seventh is the pairing of characteristic and non-characteristic” | 0298a08 |
| Overall interpretations of the seven sets | 「此約三性中歸圓成實解」—“This explanation returns them to the perfectly-accomplished among the three natures” 〔T39n1788 0298a10〕; 「若約遍計及勝義,勝義七句總遮」—“If considered through the wholly-imagined and ultimate truth, the seven phrases under ultimate truth are all negations” 〔T39n1788 0298a11〕; 「若約二諦相形,總通遮表」—“If considered through the mutual framing of the two truths, they extend throughout both negation and affirmation” 〔T39n1788 0298a12〕; 「然據經意,約真勝義心言路絕,總取遮表不依依他及遍計」—“Yet according to the sūtra’s intent, considered through the mind of true ultimate truth, the paths of words are cut off; negation and affirmation are taken together without relying on the other-dependent or the wholly-imagined” 〔T39n1788 0298a16〕. It further permits 「或通依三性,俱得無失」—“Alternatively, it may extend through all three natures; either way is without error” 〔T39n1788 0298a17〕 | 0298a10–0298a17 |
| Power | One reading takes the production of good and destruction of evil through Dharma and meaning, together with realizing principle and attaining the fruit, as the Dharma’s potency. It further says 「或即總持念慧法二,有能攝持生善滅惡之勢力也」—“Alternatively, retention consists of the two dharmas mindfulness and wisdom, which have the power to encompass and retain, produce good, and destroy evil” 〔T39n1788 0298b02〕 | 0298b02 |
| Five items belonging to the buddhas | The four preceding meanings may directly be called qualities and so forth when present in a buddha. It further says 「或能為因,依此能得佛不共法等名功德」—“Alternatively, they can serve as causes: relying on them, one can attain the buddhas’ exclusive dharmas and the rest, which are called qualities” 〔T39n1788 0298b08〕. It then correlates prohibitions, training, hidden intention, and birthplace respectively with freedom from faults, the buddhas as teachers, the wondrous principle of the dharma-body, and the accomplishment of reward and emanation buddhas | 0298b08 |
| Dharma gate and wondrous Dharma | 「或即念慧名為法門,與所持法為門,即法之門」—“Alternatively, mindfulness and wisdom themselves are called the Dharma gate: they are a gate for the Dharma upheld, hence the gate of Dharma” 〔T39n1788 0298b12〕; 「或依此總持能出生功德等」—“Alternatively, relying on this retention can produce qualities and the rest” 〔T39n1788 0298b13〕. Both the gate of wondrous Dharma and wondrous Dharma admit readings as producer and produced, concluding with 「或此妙法通能所出,即通依主、持業兩釋」—“Alternatively, this wondrous Dharma extends to both producer and produced and thus admits both the dependent-compound and appositional-compound explanations” 〔T39n1788 0298b14〕 | 0298b12–0298b14 |
| Eloquence from one’s own nature | 「不由師悟,故名自性」—“Because awakening does not depend on a teacher, it is called ‘from one’s own nature’” 〔T39n1788 0298c16〕. It further says 「或非有因,緣為他利起此四辨,故名自性」—“Alternatively, it is not caused to exist; these four eloquences arise in relation to benefiting others and are therefore called ‘from one’s own nature’” 〔T39n1788 0298c16〕 | 0298c16 |
| Number of attainments | It first follows six items and then says 「或可為五:得無所依自性辨才合之為一」—“Alternatively, there may be five: attaining non-reliance and eloquence from one’s own nature are combined into one” 〔T39n1788 0298c24〕 | 0298c24 |
| Usual explanation of the six items | 「有六:一得不退,隨信住等四種不退。二得正願,謂十大願」—“There are six: first, attaining non-retrogression, the four kinds including non-retrogression according to faith and abiding; second, attaining right vows, namely the ten great vows” 〔T39n1788 0298b22〕; 「三得無所依,即無住涅槃。四自性辨才,即四無礙辨」—“Third, attaining non-reliance, namely non-abiding nirvāṇa; fourth, eloquence from one’s own nature, namely the four unobstructed eloquences” 〔T39n1788 0298c15〕; 「五獲希有事」—“Fifth, obtaining rare things” 〔T39n1788 0298c17〕; 「六安住聖道,住極喜地得二空智名安住聖道」—“Sixth, abiding on the noble path: abiding on the ground of Utmost Joy and attaining the wisdom of the two emptinesses is called abiding on the noble path” 〔T39n1788 0298c23〕 | 0298b22; 0298c15; 0298c17; 0298c23 |
| Stage-by-stage explanation of the six items | Another reading across the ten grounds begins 「或初得住不退」—“Alternatively, first one attains non-retrogression in abiding” 〔T39n1788 0298c26〕, then continues with attaining right vows at the first ground, the undifferentiated path at the fifth ground, the four eloquences from one’s own nature at the ninth ground, rare things at the tenth ground, and abiding on the noble path at the buddha-ground | 0298c26–0299a02 |
| Abiding and upholding | It takes the formula as reliance and gives rise to Dharma-practice in reliance upon it, further correlating 「正受聞慧,正持思修慧」—“Correct receiving is wisdom from hearing; correct upholding is wisdom from reflection and cultivation” 〔T39n1788 0299b06〕 | 0299b04–0299b06 |
| Internal and external benefits | 「一攝內能令發願無有窮盡,得不退故」—“First, inward gathering can cause vows to be inexhaustible because non-retrogression has been attained” 〔T39n1788 0299b07〕. For the body’s freedom from harm the commentary supplements 「又防外非惡所侵」—“It also guards externally against invasion by wrong and evil conditions” 〔T39n1788 0299b08〕 | 0299b07–0299b08 |
Presence or Absence of Line-by-Line Commentary among the Three Masters
Huizhao’s T1788 contains a line-by-line principal commentary on this chapter, extending from 0296b25–0299b18. The three approaches, six passages, and multiple readings presented above all occur within this range.
Zhiyi’s Words and Phrases of the Sūtra of Golden Light T1785 explicitly says, 「此四卷文,總有十八品,舊來分割盈縮不同。」—“This four-fascicle text has eighteen chapters in all; since ancient times its divisions have differed in expansion and contraction” 〔T39n1785 0046b28〕. Its eighteen chapter-by-chapter outline units extend from “Preface” through “Praise of the Buddha,” with no title “Stainless,” “Non-Attached,” or “Silver Lord”; it therefore has no line-by-line commentary on the present chapter. The same work elsewhere says 「智圓修,但是方便陀羅尼」—“Perfect cultivation of wisdom is only a skillful-means dhāraṇī” 〔T39n1785 0060b07〕, but that occurs in the commentary on “Repentance” and is not drawn into the present chapter.
Jizang’s Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light T1787 defines the range of its four-fascicle recension: 「此四卷中大判有三段:第一、〈序品〉,即是序說分;第二、從〈壽量品〉訖〈捨身品〉,是正說分。 —“The four fascicles are broadly divided into three passages: first, the ‘Preface’ chapter, which is the introductory teaching; second, from ‘Lifespan’ through ‘Giving the Body,’ which is the main teaching; and third, the single chapter ‘Praise of the Buddha,’ which is the circulation teaching” 〔T39n1787 0160b23〕. The entire work contains neither this chapter title nor its phrases, and therefore has no line-by-line commentary on it.
The dhāraṇī occurrence in Zhiyi’s Profound Meaning of the Sūtra of Golden Light T1783 concerns a separate scripture, the Vaipulya Dhāraṇī Sūtra. Zhili’s Supplementary Notes on the Profound Meaning T1784 follows that separate scripture. Neither work contains the title of the present chapter or an identifiable phrase from it. This topic therefore does not fill the vacant place with passages from another chapter or another scripture.
V. Terminology
Stainless. Yijing uses this as the name of the Dharma gate. Huizhao separately transmits the ancient sound-form 「仳[跳-兆+東]𪏭沙」—an ancient Han transcription 〔T39n1788 0296c13〕 and explains it as “Stainless.” The composite edition is titled “Silver Lord,” while its chapter body twice says “Non-Attached.” Both title and chapter-body name must be preserved.
Dhāraṇī. The sūtra locates it through paired negations, establishment of the Dharma gate, sound transcription, upholding, and merit; it does not explain each sound-form word by word within the chapter. Huizhao preserves three readings: a dhāraṇī of patience regarding non-arising, a spell-formula of retention, and an interpretation permitting both. This edition does not choose one on behalf of the ancient commentary.
Efficacy, the right path, the purport of principle, and power. The four are listed continuously in Yijing and cannot be contracted into the generic word “power.” Huizhao explains them respectively as the function of attaining the fruit, right principle free from extremes, the meaning of the Dharma upheld, and the Dharma’s potency. The composite edition instead renders them as enacted path, conjunction, power, and abiding. Each translation retains its own wording.
The qualities, prohibitions, training, hidden intention, and birthplace of all buddhas. All five are listed in sequence. The vernacular and exposition must not say merely “the Dharma of all buddhas” and swallow the remaining four. Interpretive correlations from the ancient commentary are used only where that source is named.
Mother of bodhisattvas and mother of the buddhas of the three times. At the beginning, the Dharma gate is called the mother of bodhisattvas; at the end, it is called the mother of the buddhas of the past, future, and present. The sūtra does not separately construct a reproductive simile or explain the words one by one. Both explicit statements of motherhood are therefore retained without adding a figurative explanation.
The sūtra text and Huizhao’s lemmata. The literal forms below each belong to their own textual witness. The abbreviated forms in the commentary are not used to alter Yijing’s main text:
| Content node | Yijing’s T665 sūtra text | Huizhao’s T1788 lemma |
|---|---|---|
| Great Vehicle verb | 「已能發起」—“already able to arouse aspiration” 〔0432c23〕 | 「已能發趣」—“already able to set out” 〔0297c12〕 |
| First graph of the second sound-form | 「刪陀喇儞」—transmitted Han sound-form 〔0433a14〕 | 「珊陀喇儞」—transmitted Han sound-form in the commentary lemma 〔0299a19〕 |
| Final graph of the twelfth sound-form | 「阿伐那末底」—transmitted Han sound-form 〔0433a17〕 | 「阿伐那末儞」—transmitted Han sound-form in the commentary lemma 〔0299a22〕 |
| Final graph of the fourteenth sound-form | 「阿鞞毘耶訶囉」—transmitted Han sound-form 〔0433a18〕 | 「阿鞞毘耶訶羅」—transmitted Han sound-form in the commentary lemma 〔0299a23〕 |
| Eighteenth sound-form | 「阿毘婆䭾〔引〕」—transmitted Han sound-form with lengthening note 〔0433a19〕 | 「阿毘婆馱」—transmitted Han sound-form in the commentary lemma 〔0299a24〕 |
| Position of “phrases” | 「此無染著陀羅尼句,若有菩薩」—“These phrases of the Stainless Dhāraṇī: if a bodhisattva…” 〔0433a21〕 | 「此無染著陀羅尼,句若有菩薩」—“This Stainless Dhāraṇī: the phrase ‘if a bodhisattva…’” 〔0299a25〕 |
VI. Similes · Rhetoric
The chapter develops no independent narrative simile. “Mother of bodhisattvas” and “mother of the buddhas of the past, future, and present” are repeated descriptions by which the sūtra marks the standing of the Dharma gate. It does not speak of a womb, birth, or family imagery, so no reproductive simile is supplied.
At the end, the sūtra compares the merit of receiving and upholding one phrase with filling ten asaṃkhyeyas of trichiliocosms with the seven treasures and offering them to the buddhas, together with the finest clothing and food throughout innumerable eons. This is the specific comparison of merit listed in the sūtra. It is not rewritten as the unlimited universal claim “one phrase surpasses all giving.” The comparison remains restricted to the offerings and act of upholding expressly stated by the text.
The seven sets of negations use paired and serial syntax. Their rhetorical force lies in not falling into either extreme, item by item. The vernacular must completely preserve location, dharma, the three times, matter, condition, activity, and arising and cessation. They cannot be replaced by the sentence “everything is negated.”
VII. Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward
From Chapter 12 into the present chapter. Huizhao gives Chapters 12, 13, and 14 an overall outline as three modes of protection: first protection and offerings, then freedom from defilement and non-retrogression, and finally freedom from obstructions and fulfillment of wishes. This chapter carries forward from the deva-protection of Chapter 12 into the first of the next two chapters of formula-protection. This is the ancient commentary’s sequence, not Yijing’s sūtra text stating why the chapters were divided.
From the present chapter into Chapter 14. The commentary on the next chapter restates the sequence: 「於中復三:第一令守護供養、第二守護令離染不退、第三此呪守護令離災難所求如意。」—“Within it there are again three: first, causing protection and offerings; second, protection that causes freedom from defilement and non-retrogression; and third, protection through this formula that causes freedom from disasters and fulfillment of what is sought” 〔T39n1788 0299b22〕. This chapter’s freedom from defilement and non-retrogression thus stands adjacent to Chapter 14’s freedom from obstructions and fulfillment of wishes. Each chapter has its own dhāraṇī and benefits; their texts cannot be moved into one another.
The two statements of motherhood within the chapter. The beginning identifies the name through “cultivated by bodhisattvas, upheld by bodhisattvas of the past, and mother of bodhisattvas.” The end explains the reason for the merit comparison through “mother of the buddhas of the past, future, and present.” The Dharma gate’s name, its practitioners, and the reason for its merit correspond across the beginning and end.
From asking the meaning of the phrases to vowing to uphold. Śāriputra first asks what the phrases mean. The Buddha answers with the seven sets of negations and the establishment of the Dharma gate. Śāriputra then requests its direct proclamation; the Buddha proclaims the transmitted sound-forms, bodily protection, and the merit comparison. Finally Śāriputra and the great assembly rejoice and vow to uphold it. The line of Carrying Forward does not invent meanings for the sound-forms; through asking, hearing, upholding, and protection, it enables the Dharma gate to abide in practitioners.
VIII. Placement of the Editions
- This translation and annotation uses Yijing’s T16n0665 as its base text: fascicle-seven title 0432c13, translator attribution 0432c15, chapter title 0432c16, chapter body 0432c17–0433b04, and next chapter title 0433b05.
- “The Silver-Lord Dhāraṇī,” Chapter 11, in the composite T16n0664 is the positive corresponding witness: fascicle-six title 0386a04, compiler attribution 0386a06, translator attribution 0386a07, chapter title 0386a08, and chapter body 0386a09–0386b21.
- The main text, variant readings, and omitted attributions in the T664 critical notes have been listed separately. The discovery account in Baogui’s preface and the direct translation attribution within the fascicle also remain distinct layers; later shorthand is not fabricated as wording from the ancient preface.
- All nineteen extant chapter titles of T663 have been listed, and none is the present chapter. Baogui’s preface’s report “ended with eighteen chapters” and the extant nineteenth chapter, “Entrustment,” are recorded separately. The absence concerns only the textual state of the designated Dharmakṣema witness and does not become an inference about textual origin.
- Topic II lists the forty-nine prose alignments enumerated in the research record and the eighteen sound-forms plus their closing formula. Each recension’s punctuation, full-width spaces, interlinear notes, variant graphs, and rare graphs remain with that transmission and are not regularized against one another.
- Huizhao’s principal commentary is restricted to 0296b25–0299b18. The five earlier title occurrences in general surveys are not passed off as the principal commentary. Six literal differences between the sūtra and Huizhao’s lemmata are separately preserved in a table.
- Every multiple reading in Huizhao’s single commentary is set out side by side. Zhiyi and Jizang have no line-by-line commentary on this chapter in the four-fascicle recension they follow, while the profound-meaning layer likewise provides no collateral reading of this chapter. Empty headings are not fabricated, and passages from other chapters are not imported.
- The sound transcription in this chapter preserves only the graphs transmitted by ancient Chinese Buddhism. It is not restored according to a modern Sanskrit edition, its sound-forms are not translated, and neither the composite recension nor Huizhao’s lemmata is used to correct Yijing’s base text.
The editorial responsibility for this chapter is to preserve at once the difference of title and correspondence of body, presence and absence, sūtra text and commentary lemma, and singular and multiple readings. In this way, “Silver Lord” remains visible as a positive witness while the absence from Dharmakṣema’s recension is not inflated into a conclusion about origin. The actual shape in which the dhāraṇī was transmitted by the ancient translations can thus be carried forward intact without adjudicating on their behalf.
