The Goddess of Great Eloquence rises from her seat, respectfully joins her palms, and praises the Buddha in direct speech. She first praises the Buddha’s body of true gold: his throat is like a conch shell, his face like the full moon, his eyes like blue lotuses, and his red lips like crystal; his high, straight nose is like a cut ingot of gold, and his clean, even, closely set teeth are like Juwutou flowers. Light from the Buddha’s body is like a hundred thousand suns, its radiance shining through like Jambu gold.
Her praise does not stop at physical form. She next praises the Buddha’s speech as free from error, able to point out the three gates of liberation and open the three paths to awakening. His mind and intentions are pure; where he abides and what he engages are likewise pure; his movements contain no fault. The passage reveals not only visible beauty but purity of speech and action.
The praise then enters the course of the Buddha’s life: six years of ascetic practice, three turnings of the wheel of Dharma, rescuing suffering sentient beings and bringing them to the farther shore; long cultivation and perfuming through the six perfections, no fault in the three activities, and complete wisdom and benefit for self and others. Everything he teaches is always for sentient beings, and no word is spoken in vain; among the Śākyas he is like a great lion, firm and courageous, complete in the eight liberations.
At this point the Goddess of Great Eloquence uses the simile of a mosquito drinking from the sea. What she can praise is like what a mosquito drinks—only a drop of the ocean—while the Tathāgata’s qualities remain vast. This awareness does not bring her praise to a halt. She extends its merit to sentient beings and vows that they may leave birth and death and accomplish the unsurpassed path.
When the Buddha praises her in reply, he again joins the Dharma-gate, the marks, and benefit for beings: may she swiftly realize the unsurpassed Dharma-gate, become perfectly radiant in her marks and excellent characteristics, and benefit all universally. The perfect marks praised at the beginning are answered at the end by perfectly radiant marks; the rescue from suffering, the farther shore, and constant concern for beings in the middle are answered by universal benefit for all.
The answer lies in the movement of the praise itself: light, speech, practice, and wisdom all move toward release from suffering and well-being. When the marks are praised, the pure qualities borne by those marks are spoken at the same time; when the qualities are recollected, the merit gained is in turn dedicated to sentient beings. Praise thus begins with rising, joining the palms, and directly praising the Buddha, and comes to rest in universal benefit for all.

The Goddess of Great Eloquence Praises the Buddha in Direct Speech
At that time, the Goddess of Great Eloquence rose from her seat, respectfully joined her palms, and praised the World-Honored One not in verse but in direct speech:
“With utmost sincerity I take refuge in and venerate the Tathāgata Śākyamuni, Worthy of Offerings, Perfectly Awakened One! Your body is the color of true gold; your throat is like a conch shell, your face like the full moon, and your eyes like blue lotuses. Your lips are beautifully red, like the hue of crystal. Your nose is high, long, and straight, like a cut ingot of gold. Your teeth are clean, even, and closely set, like Juwutou flowers. Light from your body shines everywhere, as though from a hundred thousand suns; its bright radiance shines through like Jambu gold.
“Your words contain no error. You point out the three gates of liberation for sentient beings and open the three paths to awakening. Your mind is constantly pure, and your intentions are pure in the same way. Where the Buddha abides and the objects in which he engages are likewise constantly pure. You are free from movements contrary to proper conduct; whether walking, standing, advancing, or withdrawing, you never err.
“You underwent six years of ascetic practice and turned the wheel of Dharma three times, rescuing suffering sentient beings and bringing them to the farther shore. Your bodily form is full and perfect like the Jutuo tree. Perfumed by cultivating the six perfections, you have no fault in the three activities of body, speech, and mind; you possess all-knowing knowledge, and your qualities of benefiting yourself and others are complete. All your teachings are always for sentient beings, and the words you speak never fail of their purpose. Among the Śākya clan you are like a great lion, firm and courageous, complete in the eight liberations.
“I can now praise only a small portion of the Tathāgata’s qualities, according to my own ability, just as a mosquito drinks water from the great sea. May the merit of this praise be extended widely to sentient beings, so that they may forever leave birth and death and accomplish unsurpassed awakening.”
The World-Honored One then told the Goddess of Great Eloquence: “Excellent! Excellent! For a long time you have cultivated without interruption and have become complete in great eloquence; now, in my presence, you have again set forth extensive praise. May you swiftly realize the unsurpassed Dharma-gate, become perfectly radiant in your marks and excellent characteristics, and universally benefit all sentient beings.”
The Goddess of Great Eloquence offers only a short passage of praise, yet its reach is broad. It first lists the Buddha’s golden body, facial features, and light; it then praises the faultlessness of his speech and its ability to disclose the Dharma-gates. From purity of mind and conduct, it moves to ascetic practice, turning the wheel of Dharma, the six perfections, and the three activities, and finally dedicates the merit of praise to sentient beings. The Buddha’s reply likewise does not stop at commending her eloquence but comes to rest in the unsurpassed Dharma-gate, perfectly radiant marks, and universal benefit for all.
The chapter thereby poses a question that runs through the whole passage: how do the marks praised here lead all the way to the benefit of sentient beings?
Rising, Joining the Palms, and Speaking Directly
The Goddess of Great Eloquence first rises from her seat and respectfully joins her palms, then praises the World-Honored One in direct speech. The sūtra does not arrange her praise as verse. Instead, one prose item after another unfolds in sequence. Rising and joining the palms show that she speaks facing the Buddha; direct speech allows each name of a quality to be set forth in turn.
She first recollects the Tathāgata Śākyamuni, the Worthy of Offerings, the Perfectly Awakened One. This act of taking refuge and showing reverence establishes the person praised. The golden body, conch-like throat, full-moon face, and blue-lotus eyes that follow are therefore not ownerless images of beauty but praises tied to this act of veneration.
From the Buddha’s Golden Body to Fine Features and Light
The praise begins by saying that his body is the color of true gold. His throat is like a conch shell, his face like the full moon, and his eyes like blue lotuses. His lips are red and lustrous, like the hue of crystal; his nose is high and straight, like a cut ingot of gold; his teeth are clean, even, and closely set, like Juwutou flowers. The sūtra moves from the golden color of the whole body inward to throat, face, eyes, lips, nose, and teeth, so that the excellent marks are not a vague mass of light but disclose dignity and beauty through one fine feature after another.
The praise then expands outward again from the fine features. Light from the Buddha’s body shines everywhere like a hundred thousand suns at once; its bright radiance appears like Jambu gold. The earlier color of true gold rests upon the body, while the later Jambu gold describes the radiance shining through. Inner and outer join color and light in a single scene.
Faultless Speech Opens the Dharma-Gates
The Goddess of Great Eloquence next turns from the Buddha’s body to his speech. The Buddha’s words contain no error: they can point out the three gates of liberation and open the three paths to awakening. The sūtra states “point out” and “open” separately. Liberation has gates through which one may enter, and awakening has paths on which one may proceed. The faultlessness of speech appears precisely in its ability to show sentient beings the direction away from suffering and toward awakening.
The individual names of the three gates of liberation and the three paths to awakening are not unfolded here, but their two functions are clearly preserved. The Buddha’s words are neither empty praise nor sounds meant only to be heard: they point out the gates and open the paths.
Mind, Intentions, Abiding, and Engagement Are All Pure
The praise turns from the Buddha’s speech to purity. His mind is constantly pure, and his intentions are pure in the same way; where the Buddha abides and the objects in which he engages are likewise constantly pure. Mind, intentions, abiding, and engagement unfold in order. Purity is thus not only an inward state but extends to where the Buddha abides and what he engages.
Proper conduct follows. He is free from movements contrary to proper conduct and makes no error in going, standing, advancing, or withdrawing. Purity of mind and intention appears beside faultlessness of bodily movement, so inward intention and outward conduct correspond. The praise has moved from the visible adornment of the Buddha’s body to rectitude in action without leaving the qualities manifested by that one body.
Ascetic Practice, Turning the Wheel of Dharma, and the Farther Shore
The sūtra then looks back on the course of the Buddha’s life: six years of ascetic practice, three turnings of the wheel of Dharma, rescuing suffering sentient beings, and bringing them to the farther shore. Ascetic practice describes the course he underwent; turning the wheel describes the Dharma he taught; release from suffering and the farther shore bring those practices and teachings to sentient beings.
The praise returns to the Buddha’s body when it says that his form is full and perfect like the Jutuo tree. Yet this is immediately followed by perfuming through cultivation of the six perfections, faultlessness in the three activities, possession of all-knowing knowledge, and complete benefit for self and others. Perfect bodily form and the qualities of practice are stated next to each other, while the three activities of body, speech, and mind appear together with benefit for self and others. Visible marks, cultivated practices, and resulting benefit therefore unfold continuously.
What He Teaches Is Always for Sentient Beings; His Words Are Never Set Forth in Vain
The Goddess of Great Eloquence further praises the Buddha because everything he teaches is always for sentient beings and his speech is never set forth fruitlessly. Earlier she said that his speech contains no error; here she goes one step further. He speaks correctly, and his speech truly points toward sentient beings. The gates of liberation and paths to awakening opened by the Buddha’s words therefore answer the release from suffering, the farther shore, and complete benefit for self and others.
She also calls the Buddha a great lion among the Śākya clan, firm and courageous and complete in the eight liberations. The lion simile displays courage, while the eight liberations gather the praise toward the accomplishment of liberation. From faultless speech to firm courage, what the Buddha says and does together bears the work of benefiting beings.
A Mosquito Drinking the Sea: What Is Praised Is Only a Small Portion
After listing these items, the Goddess of Great Eloquence does not claim to have exhausted them. She says that according to her ability she can praise only a small portion of the Tathāgata’s qualities, just as a mosquito drinks water from the great sea. The simile makes the distance between the one who praises and the vast qualities praised especially vivid: the mosquito really drinks seawater, yet what it takes is only a drop of the ocean.
She immediately extends the merit of this praise to sentient beings, vowing that they may forever leave birth and death and accomplish the unsurpassed path. This small measure of praise is not gathered back as a personal possession but becomes a vow directed toward sentient beings. Praise of the Buddha moves from recounting his qualities to wishing that sentient beings leave suffering and accomplish the path.
The Buddha’s Reply: Marks and Universal Benefit
The Buddha twice says “Excellent,” stating that the Goddess of Great Eloquence has long cultivated, possesses great eloquence, and has now again offered extensive praise before him. He then wishes that she may swiftly realize the unsurpassed Dharma-gate, become perfectly radiant in her marks, and universally benefit all. The reply names, in order, her prior cultivation and eloquence, the praise she offers now, and the unsurpassed Dharma-gate, perfectly radiant marks, and universal benefit for all.
The chapter thus reflects its beginning in its end. The goddess first moves from the Buddha’s marks to speech, Dharma-gates, practice, and sentient beings; the Buddha’s reply concludes with the Dharma-gate, marks, and universal benefit for all. Marks and benefit for beings are not divided into two lines. Within this question and response, they answer one another from beginning to end.
Through the Eye of Consciousness-Only
Huizhao illuminates the whole chapter in three levels. First comes the person who praises, further divided into identifying the person, proper conduct, and direct speech. Second comes the praise, divided first into praising the qualities and making a vow; praise of the qualities then opens into declaring veneration, separate praises, and a concluding abbreviation. Last comes the Buddha’s praise and confirmation. The mind and conduct of the one who praises, the qualities praised, and the Buddha’s confirming reply thus continue from beginning to end.
The separate praises are further gathered into ten approaches: marks and excellent characteristics; faultlessness of speech; the Dharma taught; four kinds of purity; eternal extraction; manifesting the eight events; bodily form; practice; the three activities; and the virtues of wisdom. The dense list moves from outward form into speech, from mind and objects into bodily action, and then from wisdom and benefit for self and others toward sentient beings.
The four purities are illuminated in three ways. The first correlates them in reverse order with purity of intrinsic nature, purity through freedom from defilement, purity through attainment of the path, and purity of the objects that arise. The second distributes the four masterful purities—of support, object, mind, and wisdom—across mind, intention, abiding, and engagement. The third correlates these four with primary mind, resolute understanding, suchness, and conventional objects, illuminating the relations among mind, mental factors, and ultimate and conventional objects.
Huizhao further reads faultlessness in advancing and withdrawing through the absence of bodily fault and the constant benefiting of beings in all four modes of conduct. He classifies the six years of ascetic practice and the turning of the wheel of Dharma under manifesting the eight events, the six perfections as practice, and faultlessness of the three activities as an exclusive quality, extending the other qualities by analogy from those three activities. From all-knowing knowledge onward, he first divides benefit for others from benefit for oneself and then says that, in reality, the Buddha’s manifested birth is entirely for benefiting others. The Buddha’s reply proceeds through an overall commendation, long cultivation of eloquence, and the extensive praise offered now, continuing into the Dharma-gate, the marks, and universal benefit for all. Praise of the Buddha’s marks thus continues by carrying forward into mind and conduct, wisdom, and benefit for others.
考據Apparatus

This study takes as its base text Yijing’s Tang translation of The Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King, fascicle ten, “The Goddess of Great Eloquence Offers Praise,” Chapter 30. The two older recensions preserve scenes in which the deity Great Eloquence propagates the sūtra, protects and supports others, and receives praise, but they contain no corresponding passage in which the Goddess of Great Eloquence directly praises the Buddha in prose and the Buddha immediately replies in praise. This apparatus records the scenes passage by passage without adjudicating addition, omission, origin, or superiority. Huizhao’s Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King is the extant line-by-line commentary on this chapter. The base recensions of Zhiyi’s Words and Phrases, Zhili’s Notes on the Words and Phrases, and Jizang’s Commentary lack this passage; materials at the level of profound meaning are marked separately.
I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
The Chapter Text and Its Boundaries
The base-text title is 「金光明最勝王經大辯才天女讚歎品第三十」—“The Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King, ‘The Goddess of Great Eloquence Offers Praise,’ Chapter 30” 〔T16n0665 0455b21〕; the title extends into 0455b22. The chapter body begins with 「爾時,大辯才天女即從座起,合掌恭敬,以直言詞讚世尊曰:」—“At that time, the Goddess of Great Eloquence rose from her seat, respectfully joined her palms, and praised the World-Honored One in direct speech” 〔T16n0665 0455b23〕. Its true final sentence is:
〔T16n0665 0455c11〕 — “At that time, the World-Honored One told the Goddess of Great Eloquence: ‘Excellent! Excellent! For a long time you have cultivated and have become complete in great eloquence; now, in my presence, you have again set forth extensive praise. May you swiftly realize the unsurpassed Dharma-gate, become perfectly radiant in your marks and excellent characteristics, and universally benefit all.’”
The final character is at 0455c13; 0455c14 is already the title of “Entrustment,” Chapter 31.
The main text contains 288 Han characters. Its continuous prose comprises three passages: the Goddess of Great Eloquence rises from her seat, joins her palms, and praises the Buddha in direct speech; the main praise and vow; and the World-Honored One’s reply in praise. The chapter contains neither verse nor dhāraṇī, and the base text establishes no internal subsections; this edition therefore inserts no outline numbers into it.
Huizhao’s Three Main Divisions
Huizhao first analyzes the passage that identifies the one who praises:
〔T39n1788 0339c03〕 — “The text of this chapter is divided into three. This first part identifies the person able to praise, and it has three parts: first, indicating the person; next, proper conduct; and last, revealing the distinction through the words ‘in direct speech.’ Because the praise is not offered in verse, it is called direct speech.”
For the passage of praise proper, the commentator first distinguishes praising the qualities from making the vow; the vow begins with 「願以此福」—“May the merit from this” 〔T39n1788 0339c17〕. Praise of the qualities is further divided into declaring veneration, separate praises, and a concluding abbreviation; the conclusion begins with 「我今隨力」—“Now, according to my ability” 〔T39n1788 0339c18〕.
Huizhao classifies the Buddha’s reply as praise and confirmation, internally divided into a general and a particular praise. The particular praise begins with 「汝久修習」—“For a long time you have cultivated” 〔T39n1788 0340b02〕 and is further divided into the cause—long cultivation and possession of eloquence—and the result of being able to praise now. Finally, from 「令汝速證」—“May you swiftly realize” 〔T39n1788 0340b03〕 onward, the Buddha confirms the vow.
All of these are the outline divisions of an ancient commentary. The base text itself remains one continuous direct praise followed by the Buddha’s reply.
II. Alternate Translations · Collation of the Three Translations
Divergent Scenes in the Two Older Recensions
All three recensions preserve a figure belonging to the class of the deity Great Eloquence, but the scenes serve different functions. In this chapter of T665, the Goddess of Great Eloquence offers the Buddha direct praise in prose. In T663, “The Deity Great Eloquence,” the deity vows before the Buddha to enhance the Dharma teacher, those being taught and transformed, and the listeners. The propagation scene in T664, “Great Eloquence,” also contains a dhāraṇī medicine; the Buddha’s reply praises the deity Great Eloquence, and a brahmin later praises that deity in verse.
| Edition | Name verbatim | Direction and content of speech |
|---|---|---|
| T16n0665 | 「大辯才天女」—“the Goddess of Great Eloquence” 〔T16n0665 0455b23〕 | 「以直言詞讚世尊曰」—“praised the World-Honored One in direct speech” 〔T16n0665 0455b23〕; the Buddha is the one praised. |
| T16n0663 | 「大辯天」—“the deity Great Eloquence” 〔T16n0663 0344c21〕 | 「世尊! I will enhance the joyful eloquence of this Dharma teacher” 〔T16n0663 0344c21〕; what is declared is the enhancement of the Dharma teacher. |
| T16n0664 | 「大辯天神」—“the divine deity Great Eloquence” 〔T16n0664 0386b24〕 | 「世尊! I will enhance the power of joyful eloquence of this Dharma teacher” 〔T16n0664 0386b24〕. The Buddha later says: 「能為一切眾生思惟善事、能令一切眾生施其無畏,為諸眾生說此呪藥功能,利益一切眾生。」—“She can consider wholesome matters for all sentient beings, grant freedom from fear to all sentient beings, and explain the efficacy of this dhāraṇī medicine to sentient beings, benefiting all sentient beings” 〔T16n0664 0387b07〕. |
The later passage in T664 further states explicitly: 「爾時,憍陳如婆羅門以偈讚大辯天神:」—“At that time, the brahmin Kauṇḍinya praised the divine deity Great Eloquence in verse” 〔T16n0664 0387c10〕. The one praising, the one praised, and the literary form all differ from those of this chapter.
The identically titled “Praise” chapters in the two older recensions likewise do not correspond to this chapter. T663 says 「過去有王名金龍尊」—“In the past there was a king named Venerable Golden Dragon” 〔T16n0663 0339a08〕 and further that he 「常以讚歎,讚歎去來現在諸佛」—“constantly offered praise, praising the buddhas of the past, future, and present” 〔T16n0663 0339a09〕. T664 similarly says 「過去有王名金龍尊」—“In the past there was a king named Venerable Golden Dragon” 〔T16n0664 0378b07〕 and 「常以讚歎讚歎去、來、現在諸佛」—“constantly offered praise, praising the buddhas of the past, future, and present” 〔T16n0664 0378b08〕. Both passages are praises by King Venerable Golden Dragon and belong to the scene represented in this edition by “Praise through the Lotus Simile.”
The “Praise of the Buddha” chapters in the two older recensions instead contain three groups of verse praises by bodhisattvas, Faith-Mark, and the deity of the bodhi tree. —“Second is the verse proper, totaling sixty-five and a half lines. The text is divided into three: first, twenty lines spoken by the bodhisattvas; second, seventeen lines spoken by Faith-Mark; and third, twenty-eight and a half lines spoken by the tree deity, and so forth” 〔T39n1785 0083a02〕. Zhili likewise lists 「一是經初陳列之眾、二是信相發起之人、三是樹神善女」—“first, the assembly listed at the beginning of the sūtra; second, Faith-Mark, the person who initiated it; and third, the good tree-deity woman” 〔T39n1786 0154c18〕. No fourth group comprising the Goddess of Great Eloquence’s direct prose praise appears among them.

The result of this passage-by-passage review supports only the statement that no corresponding passage is found in the two older recensions. It does not support rewriting this as a judgment about a single source, later addition, abbreviation, or relative superiority.

III. Scriptural Grounds for the Consciousness-Only Meaning (the Point of the Eye)
Huizhao’s Ten Approaches to the Separate Praises
Huizhao analyzes the Goddess of Great Eloquence’s separate praises in ten successive approaches: marks and excellent characteristics, faultlessness of speech, the outward-transforming virtue of the Dharma taught, the inwardly realized virtue of the four purities, permanent extraction, manifestation of the eight events, bodily form, practice, the exclusive virtue of the three activities, and the virtue of wisdom. Their contents are as follows:
First, from 「身真金色」—“his body is the color of true gold” 〔T39n1788 0339c18〕 onward, she praises his marks and excellent characteristics.
Second, from 「所有」—“all that” 〔T39n1788 0339c19〕 onward, she praises the faultlessness of his speech. Among the eighteen qualities exclusive to a buddha, teaching the Dharma is especially beneficial, and so speech is singled out for praise.
Third, from 「示三解脫門」—“points out the three gates of liberation” 〔T39n1788 0339c20〕 onward, she praises the outward-transforming virtue of the Dharma he teaches. Huizhao explains the three gates of liberation as gates to nirvāṇa; he explains opening the three paths to awakening as the threefold buddha-awakening, on which the other two vehicles depend for their existence.
Fourth, from 「心常」—“the mind is constantly” 〔T39n1788 0339c23〕 onward, she praises the inwardly realized virtue of the four purities.
Fifth, from 「離非威儀」—“free from conduct contrary to proper deportment” 〔T39n1788 0340a11〕 onward, she praises permanent extraction and explains that habitual tendency is breath or energy.
Sixth, the six years of ascetic practice and related events praise the manifestation of the eight events. Within the eight, ascetic practice and turning the wheel of Dharma are first named. From 「為度苦生」—“in order to rescue suffering beings” 〔T39n1788 0340a17〕 onward, she praises the intent of manifesting these events—to bring beings to the farther shore—and the other events are understood by analogy.
Seventh:
〔T39n1788 0340a18〕 — “Seventh, ‘his bodily form is full and perfect’ praises his bodily form.”
Eighth:
〔T39n1788 0340a19〕 — “Eighth, ‘perfumed by the six perfections’ praises his practice.”
Ninth:
〔T39n1788 0340a19〕 — “Ninth, ‘no fault in the three activities’ praises the exclusive virtue of the three activities. The three are raised as examples of the remainder.”
Tenth, from 「具一切智」—“possesses all-knowing knowledge” 〔T39n1788 0340a20〕 onward, she praises the virtue of wisdom, first stating it generally. From 「所有宣說」—“everything he teaches” 〔T39n1788 0340a21〕 onward comes the particular explanation, first discussing benefit for others; from 「於釋種」—“among the Śākyas” 〔T39n1788 0340a22〕 onward, it discusses benefit for oneself. Huizhao immediately adds that, considered according to reality, the Buddha’s manifested birth is entirely for benefiting others; only in terms of appearance does the text speak of benefit for oneself.
These ten approaches are Huizhao’s outlined explanation of the sūtra’s sentences. The sūtra itself successively states marks and excellent characteristics, speech, Dharma-gates, purity, proper conduct, ascetic practice, turning the wheel of Dharma, the six perfections, the three activities, wisdom, benefit for self and others, and the eight liberations. The two layers do not replace one another.
Three Explanations of the Four Purities
For 「心常清淨,意樂亦然,佛所住處及所行境亦常清淨」—“the mind is constantly pure, the intentions are likewise, and where the Buddha abides and what he engages are also constantly pure” 〔T16n0665 0455c01〕, Huizhao preserves three lines of interpretation.
The first explanation lists four purities and explicitly says that they are correlated in reverse order:
〔T39n1788 0339c23〕 — “The four purities are: first, purity of intrinsic nature; second, purity through freedom from defilement; third, purity through attainment of this path; and fourth, purity of the objects that arise. They are correlated in reverse order.”
It then separately explains the mind, where the Buddha abides, and what he engages:
由心清淨所流教法,能生一切菩提分法,即能所生一切清淨〔T39n1788 0339c25〕 — “The teaching that flows from the purity of mind can give rise to all factors of awakening; thus both what produces and what is produced are entirely pure.”
〔T39n1788 0339c29〕 — “Where the Buddha abides is where the dharma-body of undefiled suchness abides.”
〔T39n1788 0340a02〕 — “The object engaged is purity of intrinsic nature, because the one true dharma-realm is the object engaged by the Buddha.”
The second explanation instead correlates the passage with the four purities in every respect. Huizhao cites Asvabhāva’s Commentary on the Compendium of the Great Vehicle, fascicle nine: 「所依清淨,即依止靜慮。 —“Purity of the support means relying on meditative absorption. Second, purity of the object means transforming and producing all forms. Third, purity of mind means that the gates of samādhi turn freely according to one’s wish—that is, freely entering and emerging from the concentrations. Fourth, mastery of wisdom means freely maintaining the dhāraṇī gates according to one’s wish” 〔T39n1788 0340a05〕. He then correlates purity of mind with the third, intention with the fourth, abiding with the first, and engagement with the second 〔T39n1788 0340a08–0340a09〕.
The third explanation proceeds through primary mind, mental factors, and ultimate and conventional objects:
〔T39n1788 0340a09〕 — “Another explanation: mind is the primary mind, while intention is resolute understanding; this resolute understanding is raised as an example of the other mental factors. What is abided in is suchness; what is engaged is the conventional object.”
All three explanations are preserved in the same principal commentary. They show Huizhao illuminating the same sūtra sentence from three directions: categories of purity, mastery in concentration and wisdom, and primary mind and mental factors.
Proper Conduct, the Eight Events, Benefit for Self and Others, and the Buddha’s Reply
Huizhao adds a further explanation concerning proper conduct, stating that the body has no fault and that in the four modes of conduct it constantly acts to benefit beings 〔T39n1788 0340a14〕. He cites the Vimalakīrtinirdeśa Sūtra: 「如來所有進止威儀無非佛事,咸令所化有情饒益。」—“None of the Tathāgata’s movements or forms of proper conduct is anything other than buddha-work; all bring benefit to the sentient beings being transformed” 〔T39n1788 0340a15〕.
In the section on the virtue of wisdom, he first divides the wording into benefit for others and benefit for oneself, then immediately says: 「據實現生皆為利他,約相而言云自利也。」—“Considered according to reality, the Buddha’s manifested birth is entirely for benefiting others; only in terms of appearance is it said to be benefit for oneself” 〔T39n1788 0340a22〕. Both statements belong to the commentator’s fine-grained analysis.
The base text of the Buddha’s reply directly says: 「令汝速證無上法門,相好圓明,普利一切。」—“May you swiftly realize the unsurpassed Dharma-gate, become perfectly radiant in your marks and excellent characteristics, and universally benefit all” 〔T16n0665 0455c12〕. Huizhao further divides the Buddha’s reply into general praise, particular praise, praise of the cause, praise of the result, and confirmation of the vow. This is the ancient commentary’s illumination of the reply’s structure.

In another backward reference, Huizhao writes 「為度苦生」—“in order to rescue suffering beings” 〔T39n1788 0340a17〕, whereas the base text itself reads 「度苦眾生」—“rescues suffering sentient beings” 〔T16n0665 0455c04〕. The quoted text, backward reference, and base text each retain their original characters.
IV. Explanations of Various Masters
Huizhao’s Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King
The principal commentary on this chapter is at T39n1788 0339b25–0340b04. From two explanations of the chapter title, direct prose praise, the ten approaches of separate praise, and the three explanations of the four purities, Huizhao comments continuously through the Buddha’s praising confirmation. It is the ancient line-by-line commentary that can be directly correlated with this chapter.
Both explanations of the chapter title appear in the principal commentary:
〔T39n1788 0339b26〕 — “Because she is complete in the four eloquences of a bodhisattva, she is called Great Eloquence. Because she has mastery, she is called a deity; she manifests as a goddess. This is a descriptive-compound explanation. Alternatively, to distinguish her from other goddesses, she is ‘the goddess of Great Eloquence,’ which is also a dependent-determinative explanation.”
Zhiyi’s Words and Phrases of the Sūtra of Golden Light: No Line-by-Line Passage on This Chapter
The older “Great Eloquence” chapter commented upon by Zhiyi is explicitly about enhancing the one who propagates the sūtra: 「對佛發願,以大辯加於說者,故稱〈大辯品〉。」—“She makes a vow before the Buddha to confer great eloquence upon the speaker; therefore it is called the ‘Great Eloquence’ chapter” 〔T39n1785 0076b06〕. His older “Praise of the Buddha” chapter takes as its complete outline the three rounds of verse praises by bodhisattvas, Faith-Mark, and the tree deity. The Goddess of Great Eloquence’s direct prose praise in the present chapter falls within neither of these outlined passages; consequently there is no line-by-line commentary on this chapter to correlate with it.
Zhili’s Notes on the Words and Phrases of the Sūtra of Golden Light: No Line-by-Line Passage on This Chapter
T1786 is Zhili’s line-by-line record explaining Zhiyi’s Words and Phrases. Its older “Praise of the Buddha” chapter lists three rounds of praisers, without the Goddess of Great Eloquence. Its citation of the Goddess of Great Eloquence from the Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King instead appears in the doctrinal explanation of the older “Great Eloquence” chapter and reads:
〔T39n1786 0143a10〕 — “The Goddess of Great Eloquence dwells atop a high mountain, thatches grass to make a hut, knots grass to make clothing, and sits with one foot raised.”
This sentence concerns the mountain-dwelling scene of the deity Great Eloquence, not the praise of the Buddha and the Buddha’s reply in this chapter. T1786 therefore contains no line-by-line passage on this chapter; this conclusion does not conflate it with T1784, the separate supplementary record on the Profound Meaning discussed below.
Jizang’s Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light: No Line-by-Line Passage on This Chapter
Jizang divides the older “Great Eloquence” chapter into two items: first, benefiting the person who teaches; and second, from 「當令是等」—“I will cause these” 〔T39n1787 0168a09〕 onward, benefiting the listeners. Of the older “Praise of the Buddha” chapter he says: 「就大段第二此間大士讚中有二:初信相讚、後樹神讚。」—“Within the second major division, the praises by the great beings of this land have two parts: first, the praise by Faith-Mark; and later, the praise by the tree deity” 〔T39n1787 0173c24〕. Zhiyi’s Profound Meaning of the Sūtra of Golden Light cites from the older “Praise of the Buddha” chapter: 「如來之身,金色微妙,其明照曜。」—“The Tathāgata’s body is wondrously golden, and its radiance shines brilliantly” 〔T39n1783 0006b22〕. Taking yao to mean light, he says this praises the Dharma-substance of the Buddha, not worldly gold.
Zhili’s Supplementary Notes on the Profound Meaning of the Sūtra of Golden Light separately establishes three kinds of praise and the sequence of repentance and praise:
〔T39n1784 0044c01〕 — “There are three kinds of praise: praise of the six-zhang body, the honored and extraordinary body, and dharma-nature. Here the honored and extraordinary body is principally praised: above, it accords in darkness with dharma-nature; below, it manifests the six-zhang body. These three are one, and this one is three. Neither vertical nor horizontal, they are inconceivable. Praising the Buddha in this way embraces every wholesome quality and, together with the preceding repentance, becomes a cause of permanence and bliss. According to the chapter order, repentance comes first, in order to purify the three activities and venerate and praise the three bodies. Alternatively, if the wholesome power of praising the Buddha supports repentance and causes the three obstructions to be extinguished, this sequence is also meaningful. Therefore it is said that the two are also mutually illustrative.”
Both passages can collaterally illuminate this chapter’s golden color, light, and praise of the Buddha. They remain at the level of profound meaning and are not passed off as line-by-line explanations of the Goddess of Great Eloquence’s own words.
V. Terminology
| Term | Scriptural ground and ancient transmission | Practice in this study |
|---|---|---|
—“Because she is complete in the four eloquences of a bodhisattva, she is called Great Eloquence. Because she has mastery, she is called a deity; she manifests as a goddess” 〔T39n1788 0339b26〕; the alternative explanation is “the goddess of Great Eloquence.” | Both explanations of the name are preserved in Huizhao’s principal commentary. |
| 直言詞 · direct speech | The base text reads 「直言詞」—“direct speech” 〔T16n0665 0455b24〕. Huizhao quotes “direct words,” uses “direct speech” again in his outline, and explicitly says 「不以頌讚」—“the praise is not offered in verse” 〔T39n1788 0339c04〕. | Direct prose praise; it is not rearranged as verse. |
| 三解脫門 · three gates of liberation | 「示三解脫門」—“points out the three gates of liberation” 〔T16n0665 0455c01〕; Huizhao says 「即涅槃門」—“they are gates to nirvāṇa” 〔T39n1788 0339c21〕. | The sūtra lists only the general name; the meaning supplied by the commentary is separately identified as an ancient explanation. |
| 三菩提路 · three paths to awakening | 「開三菩提路」—“opens the three paths to awakening” 〔T16n0665 0455c01〕; Huizhao says 「即三佛菩提。 —“This is the threefold buddha-awakening; the other two vehicles exist in dependence on it” 〔T39n1788 0339c22〕. | The three gates of liberation and the three paths to awakening are not collapsed into a single item. |
| 四清淨 · four purities | The sūtra separately lists purity of mind, intention, the Buddha’s place of abiding, and the object of his engagement; Huizhao preserves three correlating explanations. See Topic III. | All four items are retained individually. |
| 頗梨 · crystal | The base text reads 「頗梨」—“crystal” 〔T16n0665 0455b27〕; the Ming edition reads 玻瓈, while Huizhao’s quotation reads 「玻𬎙」—“crystal” 〔T39n1788 0339c08〕. | Each of the three graphic forms is returned to its own text. |
—“It praises permanent extraction. Habitual tendency is breath or energy” 〔T39n1788 0340a11〕. | The commentary’s original character is transmitted and not replaced by a graphically similar one. |
| 八解脫 · eight liberations | The sūtra closes its praise with 「具八解脫」—“complete in the eight liberations” 〔T16n0665 0455c07〕. | Because the chapter does not name the eight individually, this edition does not supplement a list. |
VI. Similes · Rhetoric
| Simile in the sūtra | Verbatim scriptural ground | Feature praised |
|---|---|---|
| 螺貝 · conch shell | 「咽如螺貝」—“his throat is like a conch shell” 〔T16n0665 0455b25〕 | The throat. |
| 滿月 · full moon | 「面如滿月」—“his face is like the full moon” 〔T16n0665 0455b26〕 | The face. |
| 青蓮 · blue lotus | 「目類青蓮」—“his eyes are like blue lotuses” 〔T16n0665 0455b26〕 | The eyes. |
| 頗梨 · crystal | 「脣口赤好如頗梨色」—“his lips are beautifully red like the hue of crystal” 〔T16n0665 0455b26〕 | The color of the lips. |
| 截金鋌 · cut ingot of gold | 「鼻高修直如截金鋌」—“his nose is high and straight like a cut ingot of gold” 〔T16n0665 0455b27〕 | The nose’s height and straightness. |
| 拘物頭華 · Juwutou flower | 「齒白齊密如拘物頭華」—“his teeth are clean, even, and closely set like Juwutou flowers” 〔T16n0665 0455b27〕 | Juwutou is a reversible transliteration of the transmitted Han form; the same method is used for Jutuo below, and no Sanskrit restoration is asserted. The image concerns the teeth’s whiteness, evenness, and close setting. |
| 百千日 · one hundred thousand suns | 「身光普照,如百千日」—“light from his body shines everywhere like a hundred thousand suns” 〔T16n0665 0455b28〕 | The universal illumination of his bodily light. |
| 贍部金 · Jambu gold | 「光彩映徹,如贍部金」—“his radiance shines through like Jambu gold” 〔T16n0665 0455b29〕 | Radiance shining through. |
| 拘陀樹 · Jutuo tree | 「身相圓滿如拘陀樹」—“his bodily form is full and perfect like the Jutuo tree” 〔T16n0665 0455c04〕 | Full and perfect bodily form. |
| 大師子 · great lion | 「於釋種中為大師子」—“among the Śākyas he is a great lion” 〔T16n0665 0455c06〕 | Firmness and courage. |
| 蚊飲大海 · a mosquito drinking the sea | 「猶如蚊子飲大海水」—“just as a mosquito drinks water from the great sea” 〔T16n0665 0455c08〕 | Her statement that she can praise only a small portion of the Tathāgata’s qualities. |
The chapter begins its praise with the visible color of the body, facial features, and light, then turns to speech, Dharma-gates, purity, proper conduct, ascetic practice, the six perfections, the three activities, wisdom, and benefit for beings. It ends with the mosquito drinking the great sea, acknowledging that what has been praised is only a small portion and returning the dense list of items to the inexhaustibility of the Tathāgata’s qualities.
VII. Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward
At the end of the preceding chapter, the World-Honored One tells the deity of the bodhi tree: 「汝能於我真實無妄清淨法身,自利利他宣揚妙相,以此功德令汝速證最上菩提,一切有情同所修習,若得聞者,皆入甘露無生法門。」—“You can proclaim the wondrous characteristics of my true, undeceiving, pure dharma-body and its benefit for self and others. Through this merit, may you swiftly realize supreme awakening. May all sentient beings cultivate it together; if they hear it, may they all enter the ambrosial Dharma-gate of non-arising” 〔T16n0665 0455b17〕. The Goddess of Great Eloquence immediately rises from her seat in the present chapter, and at its end the Buddha again wishes that she may swiftly realize the unsurpassed Dharma-gate, become perfectly radiant in her marks, and universally benefit all. The two chapters have different praisers and different replies by the Buddha; their boundaries are not merged merely because their wording is similar.
This chapter itself has a clear progression. It begins by praising the body of true gold and its various marks and excellent characteristics, then praises faultless speech, the gates of liberation, and the paths to awakening, followed by pure conduct, ascetic practice, turning the wheel of Dharma, the six perfections, the three activities, and complete benefit for self and others. The Goddess of Great Eloquence finally extends the merit of praise to sentient beings, and the World-Honored One concludes with universal benefit for all. Marks, speech, practice, and benefit for beings thus continue by carrying forward without stopping at admiration of outward form.
The carrying forward of ancient readings also has distinct levels. Huizhao gives a line-by-line principal commentary on Yijing’s recension; Zhiyi, Zhili, and Jizang record the propagating deity Great Eloquence and the three rounds of praise of the Buddha on the basis of the older recension; T1783 and T1784 illuminate golden light and the three kinds of praise at the level of profound meaning. Sūtra, commentary, and record each disclose meaning on the basis of the text transmitted to them and are not transplanted into one another.
VIII. Placement of the Editions
- Base text: T16n0665, The Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King, fascicle ten; chapter title at 0455b21–0455b22 and chapter body at 0455b23–0455c13. The main text contains 288 Han characters, direct prose praise, no verse, and no dhāraṇī.
- Huizhao’s Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King, T39n1788: the principal commentary on this chapter is at 0339b25–0340b04 in fascicle six; the table of contents at the beginning of the fascicle is not the beginning of the principal commentary.
- T16n0663 “The Divine Deity Great Eloquence,” 0344c20–0345a03, and the body of T16n0664 “Great Eloquence,” 0386b24–0388a07: these preserve scenes in which the deity Great Eloquence propagates the sūtra, teaches a dhāraṇī medicine, and receives praise. The Buddha’s praise of the deity is at 0387b06–b09; the introduction to the brahmin’s praise is at 0387c10 and its verses at 0387c11–0388a05. None corresponds to the Goddess of Great Eloquence’s direct prose praise of the Buddha in the present chapter.
- T16n0663 “Praise,” beginning at 0339a08, and T16n0664 “Praise,” beginning at 0378b07: both are praises by King Venerable Golden Dragon. T16n0663 “Praise of the Buddha” after 0357a25 and T16n0664 “Praise of the Buddha” after 0400a26 are verse praises by Faith-Mark, the tree deity, and others. All have been separated according to their complete scenes.
- The six rows of collated variants in this chapter of T665 are recorded in full under Topic II:
詞/辭,南無/南謨,頗梨/玻瓈, the two variant sets for the wording on speech, and三/一. Each remains with its own witness. - The twelve graphic, punctuation, and sentence-division differences between Huizhao’s quoted sūtra text and the base text are recorded in full under Topic III. The quoted text is not used to alter the base text retrospectively.
- Zhiyi’s T1785, Zhili’s T1786, and Jizang’s T1787 have no line-by-line passage on this chapter; Zhiyi’s T1783 and Zhili’s T1784 provide only collateral illumination at the level of profound meaning. T1784, Supplementary Notes on the Profound Meaning, and T1786, Notes on the Words and Phrases, are distinct works at distinct levels.
- This apparatus relies only on sūtras and ancient masters. The absence of a corresponding passage in the two older recensions is recorded only as a fact about their scenes; no conclusion about textual history is inferred.
This chapter’s direct prose praise successively unfolds the Buddha’s body, speech, conduct, and benefit for beings. Collated variants, the commentary’s three explanations, the scenes in older recensions, and collateral illumination at the level of profound meaning each have their own place. The apparatus ultimately returns to the direction of the sūtra itself: carrying forward from praise of a small portion to extending it widely to sentient beings and universally benefiting all.
