〔T16 0454c29〕
心要Essence

A thousand suns, the rising sun, the blazing sun, the full moon—this chapter has only eight and a half stanzas, yet light appears again and again. The Buddha praised by Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner is like an assemblage of wondrous jewels, a golden mountain, or Mount Sumeru. Red, white, and gold light mingle; the tuft between his brows is lustrous, soft, bright, and pure white. But what, in the end, does this light illuminate?

It first illuminates the Buddha’s body. His marks produced by a hundred merits are complete, and immeasurable qualities adorn him. Soft, deep-blue hair resembles black bees gathered on wondrous flowers; his white, even, closely set teeth are like shell and snow; the tuft between his brows, curling to the right, is like the full moon in empty space. The praise omits no detail, because perfection appears both in the height and breadth of a golden mountain or Mount Sumeru and in the purity and majesty of a single hair, tooth, or tuft.

Yet the light does not stop at the Buddha’s body. The golden mountain’s light pervades hundreds of thousands of lands, extinguishing sentient beings’ measureless suffering and giving them boundless, supremely wondrous happiness. The Tathāgata also confers many kinds of benefit, causes beings constantly to obtain great happiness, illuminates tens of millions of lands, and manifests throughout the ten directions. To notice only the intensity of the light is to read only half the praise; wherever the light reaches, sentient beings are suffering and long for happiness.

Looking more deeply, the marks and excellent characteristics are not isolated features. The verses place great sympathetic joy, great equanimity, great loving-kindness, and great compassion within the Buddha’s adornment, and say that the many wondrous marks and excellent characteristics are accomplished through the factors of awakening. To see a perfectly complete body is to see how qualities are accomplished; to see light pervade everywhere is at the same time to see the welfare of sentient beings of which the verses speak.

Before Wonderful Banner praises the Buddha, he therefore first rises, bares his shoulder, kneels, joins his palms, and faces the Buddha. In a posture of reverence he gives voice, one by one, to the qualities he has seen. When the verses end, the Buddha confirms that their merit is inconceivable, that they can benefit all beings, and that they can enable those who do not yet understand to follow, practice, and learn. What the end of the chapter reveals is not only a Buddha to be looked up to, but also a teaching that those who do not yet understand can follow, practice, and learn.

What does the Buddha’s light illuminate? It illuminates the perfectly complete marks and excellent characteristics, and also sentient beings who suffer and hope for happiness; it illuminates qualities already accomplished, and also the Dharma that those who do not yet understand need to practice and learn. When praise leads people from the marks to the qualities and then, through those qualities, back to sentient beings’ suffering and happiness, it becomes speech that invites them to follow, practice, and learn.

A vernacular translation of Yijing’s Tang translation of The Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King, fascicle ten, Chapter 28, Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner Offers Praise.

Wonderful Banner Rises and Praises the Buddha

At that time, Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, placed his right knee on the ground, joined his palms, faced the Buddha, and began to praise him in verse.

Eight and a Half Stanzas, Translated One by One

First Stanza

The Sage’s marks produced by a hundred merits are perfectly complete, and immeasurable qualities adorn his body. His bodily form is vast and pure, and those who see it all feel delight; his light is as though a thousand suns were shining together.

Second Stanza

The colors of his blazing radiance are boundless, and his light burns brilliantly. His handsome and majestic appearance is like an assemblage of wondrous jewels. He is also like the rising sun illuminating empty space: red and white light appear distinctly, with gold shining between them.

Third Stanza

He is also like a golden mountain radiating light everywhere, able to illuminate hundreds of thousands of lands throughout. He can extinguish the measureless suffering of sentient beings and give them boundless, supremely wondrous happiness.

Fourth Stanza

All the marks and excellent characteristics are fully present, majestic and pure; sentient beings delight in beholding them and never tire of the sight. His hair is soft and deep blue, like black bees gathered on wondrous flowers.

Fifth Stanza

He is purified and adorned by great sympathetic joy and great equanimity, and great loving-kindness and great compassion are perfectly complete. All the wondrous marks and excellent characteristics form his adornment; they are accomplished through the factors of awakening.

Sixth Stanza

The Tathāgata can confer every kind of benefit upon sentient beings and cause them constantly to obtain vast happiness. All his wondrous qualities together adorn him, and his light shines universally across tens of millions of lands.

Seventh Stanza

The Tathāgata’s radiant marks are supremely complete, like a blazing sun illuminating the whole sky. The Buddha is replete with qualities, like Mount Sumeru; the manifestations he produces can pervade all ten directions.

Eighth Stanza

The Tathāgata’s golden mouth is wondrous, handsome, and majestic. His teeth are white, even, and closely set, like shell and snow. Nothing can compare with the Buddha’s face; the tuft of hair between his brows always curls to the right.

Final Half-Stanza

That tuft is glossy and soft, bright and pure white, like crystal; it is also like the full moon high in empty space.

The Buddha Confirms the Praise

The Buddha told Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner: “You are able to praise the Buddha in this way. The merit is inconceivable: it can benefit all beings and can enable those who do not yet understand to follow, practice, and learn.”

義疏Exposition

A verse praising the Buddha can easily be read as a string of beautiful descriptions: a thousand suns, an assemblage of jewels, a golden mountain, Mount Sumeru, and the full moon, with colors of light changing so rapidly that the eye can scarcely take them in. Yet Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner Offers Praise does more than let us contemplate the Buddha’s majesty. Beginning with the marks produced by a hundred merits and immeasurable qualities, it sends light across the lands and brings that light to bear on sentient beings’ suffering and happiness. It then moves from hair, teeth, and the tuft between the brows to great sympathetic joy, great equanimity, great loving-kindness, great compassion, and the factors of awakening. Finally, the Buddha himself explains how this praise benefits all and leads people to practice and learn.

The chapter’s true question, then, is not “How beautiful is the Buddha?” It is this: when we see a body adorned with marks and excellent characteristics, can we at the same time see the qualities that accomplished them and the sentient beings toward whom those qualities are directed?

Before the Praise Is Spoken, the Body Has Already Spoken

Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner does not speak while remaining in his seat. He first rises, bares his right shoulder, places his right knee on the ground, joins his palms, and faces the Buddha. Only then does he recite the verses of praise. The sūtra records rising, baring the shoulder, kneeling, and joining the palms in sequence, so that praise first becomes a complete bodily act.

This opening also establishes the direction of the whole chapter. Wonderful Banner faces the Buddha and, from a posture of reverence, gives voice to what he sees. Although the ensuing eight and a half stanzas abound in immense fields of light, color, and simile, the entire praise still begins from this kneeling figure with palms joined: every word of praise is spoken by a bodhisattva who has risen from his seat and turned toward the Buddha.

A Hundred Merits and a Thousand Suns: The Marks Are Adorned by Qualities

The first stanza begins with the Sage’s marks produced by a hundred merits and then says that immeasurable qualities adorn his body. Marks and qualities are joined within a single stanza: the visible body is not an isolated appearance but is adorned by immeasurable qualities. Vast and pure, this bodily form delights those who behold it; its light is like a thousand suns shining at once, carrying the purity of a single body into boundless brilliance.

The second stanza gives the light multiple layers. First come boundless colors of flame and blazing radiance, a handsome majesty like an assemblage of wondrous jewels; then comes the rising sun entering empty space, its red and white colors distinct, with gold shining between them. This is not a static portrait in one color but a scene actively emitting light: the assemblage of jewels conveys abundance, the rising sun conveys first appearance, and the gold between red and white conveys brilliance.

From the hundred merits to immeasurable qualities, from a thousand suns to the assemblage of jewels and the rising sun, the sūtra writes “marks” as a manifestation of “qualities,” and writes majesty as a power capable of illumination.

The Golden Mountain Shines Everywhere: Light Enters Sentient Beings’ Suffering and Happiness

The third stanza extends the field of vision from the Buddha’s body to hundreds of thousands of lands. Like a golden mountain emitting universal light, the Buddha illuminates vast worlds throughout; the verse immediately adds that this light can extinguish sentient beings’ measureless suffering and give them boundless, supremely wondrous happiness.

At this point, light is no longer merely a spectacle that inspires amazement. Wherever it reaches there are sentient beings: they are suffering and they need happiness. “Pervading everywhere” therefore describes more than spatial grandeur. By stating universal illumination, extinction of suffering, and the giving of happiness in sequence, the verse transforms the Buddha’s majesty from visible beauty into benefit that beings can receive.

The thousand suns, the rising sun, and the golden mountain thus reach the same point: they describe the immensity of the light while bringing sentient beings’ suffering and happiness into the content of praise.

From Deep-Blue Hair to Loving-Kindness and Compassion: The Marks Do Not Stand Alone

The fourth stanza draws the view close again. All the marks are complete, majestic, and pure; sentient beings delight in beholding them and never tire. Soft, deep-blue hair is like black bees gathered on wondrous flowers. Black bees and wondrous flowers convey at once the hair’s color, texture, and gathered form, bringing the immense field of light back to one finely rendered characteristic.

But the sūtra does not stop at the hair. The next stanza immediately names great sympathetic joy, great equanimity, great loving-kindness, and great compassion, saying that they purify and adorn the Buddha and are perfectly complete. The many wondrous marks and excellent characteristics are adornments because they are accomplished through the factors of awakening. The marks are therefore not a result cut off from cultivation: the verse moves directly from visible form to the qualities and practices that accomplish it.

This transition is crucial. If one looks only at the black bees, wondrous flowers, and deep-blue hair, the praise can stop at appearance. Yet immediately after the finest external feature, the sūtra places joy, equanimity, loving-kindness, and compassion and carries the passage onward through the factors of awakening. Outward marks and the causes that accomplish them are thus joined across two neighboring stanzas.

Welfare, Happiness, and Manifestation throughout the Ten Directions

The sixth stanza returns once more to sentient beings. The Tathāgata can give them many kinds of welfare and cause them constantly to obtain vast happiness; many wondrous qualities together adorn his body, and light shines universally across tens of millions of lands. Welfare, happiness, wondrous qualities, and light are not four unrelated things. They unfold in sequence within the same stanza: qualities adorn the Buddha’s body, the Buddha’s light illuminates the lands, and sentient beings are thereby gathered into the praise.

The seventh stanza carries this scene into the ten directions. The Tathāgata’s radiant marks are perfectly complete, like a blazing sun throughout the sky; the Buddha is also like Mount Sumeru, complete in qualities, and the manifestations he produces can pervade the ten directions. The blazing sun conveys the perfection of his radiant marks, Sumeru carries forward the completeness of his qualities, and the ten directions show that his manifestations are not confined to the place immediately before us.

From hundreds of thousands of lands, to tens of millions of lands, to the ten directions, the chapter repeatedly enlarges the range of light and manifestation. At the same time, it never leaves behind the welfare and happiness received by sentient beings. Here the immense scale comes to rest in benefit that is not confined to any one place.

Golden Mouth, White Teeth, and Full Moon: The Whole Praise Concludes in Minute Features

The final stanza and a half return the gaze to the Buddha’s face. His golden mouth is wondrous, handsome, and majestic; his teeth are white, even, and closely set like shell and snow; nothing can compare with his face, and the tuft between his brows always curls to the right. That tuft is glossy and soft, bright and pure white like crystal, and also like the full moon high in empty space.

The verses previously used a thousand suns, a golden mountain, the blazing sun, and Mount Sumeru to convey immensity; now they conclude with teeth and a single tuft between the brows. Although the scale has contracted, the light has not disappeared: pure white crystal and the full moon in empty space reconnect the most minute mark with boundless space. Immensity and fine detail are not two different kinds of praise. The same perfectly complete qualities can pervade the ten directions and also appear in a single hair.

Why Is One Verse of Praise Worthy of the Buddha’s Confirmation?

When Wonderful Banner has finished, the Buddha directly identifies three things: the merit of praising the Buddha in this way is inconceivable; it can benefit all; and it can enable those who do not yet understand to follow, practice, and learn. The confirmation at the chapter’s end reveals the function of the preceding eight and a half stanzas.

Read backward from this point, the verses have already placed extinction of suffering, the giving of happiness, welfare, and ease within the light, while joining the marks to great sympathetic joy, great equanimity, great loving-kindness, great compassion, and the factors of awakening. The benefit, practice, and learning named by the Buddha at the end gather these clues together: through this praise, those who do not yet understand can follow, practice, and learn.

The chapter is brief, but its path is complete. It begins with a bodhisattva rising, kneeling, and joining his palms; passes through eight and a half stanzas on marks, light, and benefiting beings; and ends with the Buddha explaining that the praise can benefit all and enable those who do not yet understand to practice and learn. Wonderful Banner’s words do more than answer “How is the Buddha majestic?” They leave us another question: having seen these qualities, are we willing to follow, practice, and learn?

Looking Again at the Eight and a Half Stanzas through the Eye of Consciousness-Only

The preceding discussion follows what this chapter itself says. Huizhao offers another mirror, that of consciousness-only—but the mirror is not the sūtra. In explaining the chapter title, he takes “wonderful” to mean that superior wisdom towers above and uniquely transcends defiled entanglements, using a high banner as the simile; he also records that the old translation calls the bodhisattva Faith-Mark. Asked why this chapter singles out Wonderful Banner although many people in the sūtra receive predictions together, he answers that Wonderful Banner is named because he stands first among them.

For the chapter’s overall sequence, Huizhao distinguishes three sections: the praiser’s protocol, the praise properly stated, and the World-Honored One’s commendation and confirmation. He further divides the eight and a half stanzas into three groups: the first four praise the transformation buddha, the next three praise the self- and other-enjoyment buddhas, and the final stanza and a half praise both kinds of buddha in common. The dharma-body is profound and hidden and is not directly praised in the verses; praising the bodies that depend upon it indirectly reveals their basis. The Buddha’s final confirmation is gathered under the World-Honored One’s commendation and confirmation, bringing the opening protocol, the praise itself, and the benefit of practice and learning into correspondence from beginning to end.

He further analyzes the first four stanzas through body, light, combined praise of body and light, and the unfolding of the marks and excellent characteristics, with pervasion and benefit each assigned its place. The next three first gather the four immeasurables under joy, equanimity, loving-kindness, and compassion; then explain the factors of awakening as the cause of the marks and excellent characteristics; and finally speak of benefit, body, and light. Huizhao takes body to include all five aggregates and light to include both wisdom and visible form. The final stanza and a half praise the marks and excellent characteristics of both kinds of buddha in common. These are all the commentator’s analyses, not outline names established by the sūtra itself.

The old translation casts Faith-Mark’s praise in seventeen four-character stanzas, and Zhiyi, Zhili, and Jizang accordingly each construct readings of the whole chapter and its individual passages on the basis of that old text. Huizhao instead establishes his analysis of the three bodies on the eight and a half stanzas of Yijing’s recension. Each account is formed in relation to its own textual basis: the ancient commentators explain seventeen four-character stanzas, while Huizhao reads Yijing’s eight and a half seven-character stanzas. This is the chapter’s carrying forward: the sūtra remains at the center, and the several mirrors make its layers visible.

This apparatus takes as its base Yijing’s Tang translation of The Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King, fascicle ten, Chapter 28, Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner Offers Praise. It reads this text alongside the praise by Bodhisattva Faith-Mark in the Praise of the Buddha chapter of Dharmakṣema’s Sūtra of Golden Light and Baogui’s composite Sūtra of Golden Light, and records interpretations transmitted by Huizhao, Zhiyi, Zhili, and Jizang. Yijing’s recension divides the old Praise of the Buddha chapter into three chapters; the present chapter is the second segment after that division, namely Wonderful Banner’s praise. What follows records only the divisions and combinations, textual variants, and ancient masters’ outlines, without judging which is superior.

I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement

Chapter Body, Number of Stanzas, and Connection before and after

The base recension titles the chapter 「金光明最勝王經妙幢菩薩讚歎品第二十八」—“The Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King: Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner Offers Praise, Chapter Twenty-Eight” 〔T16n0665 0454c28〕. The chapter body begins with 「爾時,妙幢菩薩即從座起,偏袒右肩,右膝著地,合掌向佛,而說讚曰:」—“At that time, Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, placed his right knee on the ground, joined his palms, faced the Buddha, and spoke this praise” 〔T16n0665 0454c29〕. It ends with the Buddha’s confirmation to Wonderful Banner, 「汝能如是讚佛,功德不可思議,利益一切,令未知者隨順修學。」—“You are able to praise the Buddha in this way. The merit is inconceivable: it benefits all and enables those who do not yet understand to follow, practice, and learn” 〔T16n0665 0455a19〕; the true last line is 0455a20. The chapter’s 294-character body consists of three containers in sequence: the protocol of rising from the seat, seventeen two-line display rows of seven-character praise (thirty-four metrical lines), and the Buddha’s confirmation. The base text establishes no internal subsections, so outline numbers have not been inserted.

At the end of the preceding chapter, the World-Honored One first confirms the bodhisattvas collectively: 「善哉! —“Excellent, excellent! You are well able to praise the Buddha’s qualities in this way, benefit sentient beings, extensively advance the work of the Buddha, extinguish every offense, and produce immeasurable merit” 〔T16n0665 0454c25〕. Wonderful Banner then offers his own praise in the present chapter. At its end the Buddha gives him an individual confirmation; the following chapter immediately continues, 「爾時,菩提樹神亦以伽他讚世尊曰:」—“At that time, the deity of the bodhi tree also praised the World-Honored One in verse” 〔T16n0665 0455a22〕. The word “also” explicitly links the sequence of praise across all three chapters.

Huizhao’s Three Divisions and Eight and a Half Stanzas

Huizhao’s Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King begins its outline with 「下品文分三:初讚人儀軌」—“The following chapter is divided into three: first, the praiser’s protocol” 〔T39n1788 0338a29〕, followed by the praise properly stated and, finally, the World-Honored One’s commendation and confirmation. He further judges, 「下讚歎有八頌半,分三:初四頌讚變化佛」—“The following praise has eight and a half stanzas, divided into three: the first four praise the transformation buddha” 〔T39n1788 0338b09〕; the next three praise the enjoyment buddha, and the final stanza and a half praise both buddhas in common. This is an ancient commentary’s outline of continuous verse, not a set of headings established by the sūtra itself.

II. Alternate Translations · Collation of the Three Translations

Division and Combination in the Three Translations and Correspondence of the Praiser’s Name

RecensionCorresponding locationPraiser and verse formForm of division or combination
T16n0663Praise of the Buddha, Chapter 18, 0357a25–0357b20Bodhisattva Faith-Mark; sixty-eight four-character lines, seventeen stanzasThe praise by Faith-Mark is followed immediately by the praise of the deity of the bodhi tree; the World-Honored One responds only at the end of the complete chapter.
T16n0664Praise of the Buddha, Chapter 23, 0400a26–0400b21Bodhisattva Faith-Mark; sixty-eight four-character lines, seventeen stanzasLike T663, it combines Faith-Mark’s praise, the tree deity’s praise, and the World-Honored One’s response in one chapter.
T16n0665Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner Offers Praise, Chapter 28, 0454c29–0455a20Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner; thirty-four seven-character lines, eight and a half stanzasWonderful Banner’s praise forms an independent chapter with a separate confirmation by the Buddha at its end; the tree deity’s praise forms Chapter 29.

The scene is the same in all three recensions. T663 reads, 「爾時信相菩薩,即於此會從座而起,偏袒右肩右膝著地,合掌向佛而說讚言:」—“At that time, Bodhisattva Faith-Mark rose from his seat in that assembly, bared his right shoulder, placed his right knee on the ground, joined his palms, faced the Buddha, and spoke this praise” 〔T16n0663 0357a25〕. T664 reads, 「爾時,信相菩薩即於此會從坐而起,偏袒右肩,右膝著地,合掌向佛而說讚言:」—“At that time, Bodhisattva Faith-Mark rose from his seat in that assembly, bared his right shoulder, placed his right knee on the ground, joined his palms, faced the Buddha, and spoke this praise” 〔T16n0664 0400a26〕. T665 reads, 「爾時,妙幢菩薩即從座起,偏袒右肩,右膝著地,合掌向佛,而說讚曰:」—“At that time, Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, placed his right knee on the ground, joined his palms, faced the Buddha, and spoke this praise” 〔T16n0665 0454c29〕. The corresponding names are therefore 「信相菩薩」—“Bodhisattva Faith-Mark” in T663 〔T16n0663 0357a25〕, 「信相菩薩」—“Bodhisattva Faith-Mark” in T664 〔T16n0664 0400a26〕, and 「妙幢菩薩」—“Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner” in T665 〔T16n0665 0454c29〕. Huizhao likewise explicitly records 「舊云信相」—“The old translation says Faith-Mark” 〔T39n1788 0338a23〕. The present apparatus makes a positive correspondence on the basis of scene and content; zero occurrences of one translated name in another recension are not turned into a claim that the figure is absent from its transmission.

Position of the Buddha’s Confirmation after Division or Combination

Immediately after Faith-Mark’s praise, T663 continues, 「爾時道場菩提樹神,復說讚曰:」—“At that time, the deity of the bodhi tree at the place of awakening again spoke this praise” 〔T16n0663 0357b21〕. Only at the end of the complete Praise of the Buddha chapter does it say, 「爾時世尊,從三昧起,以微妙音,而讚歎言:」—“At that time, the World-Honored One rose from samādhi and praised them in a wondrous voice, saying” 〔T16n0663 0357c27〕. T664 likewise first continues, 「爾時,道場菩提樹神復說讚曰:」—“At that time, the deity of the bodhi tree at the place of awakening again spoke this praise” 〔T16n0664 0400b22〕, while only at the chapter’s end does it say, 「爾時世尊,從三昧起,以微妙音,而讚嘆言:」—“At that time, the World-Honored One rose from samādhi and praised them in a wondrous voice, saying” 〔T16n0664 0400c28〕. T665 instead gives Wonderful Banner an individual confirmation at the end of the present chapter and lets the deity of the bodhi tree continue the praise in the next. The three structures are set beside one another according to their respective recensions, without judging addition or omission.

III. Scriptural Grounds for the Consciousness-Only Meaning (the Point of the Eye)

What the Sūtra Itself Establishes

The chapter’s praise of the Buddha does more than list physical features. The first four stanzas join the marks produced by a hundred merits, immeasurable qualities, purity that delights the beholder, light, an assemblage of jewels, a golden mountain, extinction of suffering, and the giving of happiness. The fifth directly says, 「大喜大捨淨莊嚴,大慈大悲皆具足」—“Great sympathetic joy and great equanimity purify and adorn him; great loving-kindness and great compassion are complete” 〔T16n0665 0455a10〕, and says that the marks and excellent characteristics are 「菩提分法之所成」—“accomplished through the factors of awakening” 〔T16n0665 0455a11〕. The sixth and seventh stanzas again place together the giving of benefits, attainment of happiness, light illuminating many lands, and manifestation throughout the ten directions. At the end, the Buddha confirms three things: the merit is inconceivable, it benefits all, and it enables those who do not yet understand to follow, practice, and learn. Each point can be stated directly on the basis of the sūtra.

—“The reason for the arrival of Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner Offers Praise is the same as above. To explain the name: the transmitted sound-form is Quluzhiluo, which here means ‘wonderful’” 〔T39n1788 0338a20〕. Huizhao further records Jitou as a transmitted Han sound-form glossed “banner,” compares superior wisdom towering above to a lofty banner, and answers that Wonderful Banner praises alone because “he stands first.”Explanation of the name and question-and-answer.
—“Sūtra: At that time, Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, placed his right knee on the ground, joined his palms, and faced the Buddha” 〔T39n1788 0338a28〕.Huizhao’s cited text.
3「下品文分三:初讚人儀軌」—“The following chapter is divided into three: first, the praiser’s protocol” 〔T39n1788 0338a29〕, followed by the praise properly stated and then the World-Honored One’s commendation and confirmation.Three divisions of the whole chapter.
—“The Sage’s marks produced by a hundred merits are perfectly complete; immeasurable qualities adorn his body. Vast and pure, he delights those who see him, like the light of a thousand suns shining” 〔T39n1788 0338b03〕.Huizhao’s opening cited text.
—“The following praise has eight and a half stanzas, divided into three: the first four praise the transformation buddha” 〔T39n1788 0338b09〕. Huizhao judges the next three as praising the enjoyment buddha and the final stanza and a half as praising both buddhas in common; he further says that the dharma-body is not praised in brief because it is profound and hidden.Outline according to buddha-bodies.
—“Great sympathetic joy and great equanimity purify and adorn him; great loving-kindness and great compassion are complete. The many wondrous marks and excellent characteristics form his adornment, accomplished through the factors of awakening” 〔T39n1788 0338b16〕.Huizhao’s middle cited text.
7「下讚受用身,通自他受用,分四:初半讚四無量」—“The following praises the enjoyment body, including both self- and other-enjoyment, in four parts: the first half praises the four immeasurables” 〔T39n1788 0338b20〕. He then outlines the cause of the marks and excellent characteristics, benefit, body, and light, further explaining these through the five aggregates, wisdom, and visible form.Fine analysis of the enjoyment body.
8「如來金口妙端嚴,齒白齊密如珂雪」—“The Tathāgata’s golden mouth is wondrous and majestic; his teeth are white, even, and closely set like shell and snow” 〔T39n1788 0338b27〕, followed by cited text through the full moon abiding in empty space.Huizhao’s concluding cited text.
—“The following praises in common the marks and excellent characteristics of both buddhas” 〔T39n1788 0338b29〕.Outline of the final stanza and a half.
—“You are able to praise the Buddha in this way. The merit is inconceivable: it benefits all and enables those who do not yet understand to follow, practice, and learn” 〔T39n1788 0338c01〕.Huizhao’s citation of the Buddha’s confirmation.
—“The following is the Tathāgata’s commendation and confirmation” 〔T39n1788 0338c02〕.Outline of the final section.

Within the principal commentary on this chapter, no parallel interpretations are introduced by formulas equivalent to “some say,” “again,” “one explanation,” or “a second explanation.” Its enumerable internal question-and-answer concerns only why Wonderful Banner praises alone, followed by a continuous analysis of the name, buddha-bodies, body and light, marks and excellent characteristics, and benefit. This apparatus therefore records all of the question-and-answer and outline material without manufacturing a column for alternate explanations that do not exist.

There are two character-level differences between Huizhao’s cited sūtra and T665. The base recension reads 「如來光相極圓滿」—“The Tathāgata’s radiant marks are perfectly complete” 〔T16n0665 0455a14〕, while Huizhao cites 「如來光明極圓滿」—“The Tathāgata’s light is perfectly complete” 〔T39n1788 0338b19〕. The base reads 「光潤鮮白等頗梨」—“Glossy and soft, bright and pure white like crystal” 〔T16n0665 0455a18〕, while Huizhao cites 「光潤鮮白等玻瓈」—“Glossy and soft, bright and pure white like crystal” 〔T39n1788 0338b28〕. The original characters of each work remain distinct; the commentary’s citation is not used to alter the sūtra.

IV. Explanations of Various Masters

Huizhao’s Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King

Huizhao’s principal commentary on this chapter occurs in fascicle six, from 0338a19–0338c03. Chapter names visible around 0181c, 0182c, and 0191c belong to tables of contents in earlier fascicles and are not the beginning of the principal commentary. His explanation of the name preserves an ancient transliteration and the old translated name; on the basis of Yijing’s eight and a half stanzas, he then distinguishes the transformation buddha, enjoyment buddha, and praise common to both. This is the consciousness-only mirror used by the exposition in this edition—the mirror is not the sūtra.

Zhiyi’s Words and Phrases on the Sūtra of Golden Light

Zhiyi’s outline heading is 「釋讚佛品」—“Explaining the Praise of the Buddha Chapter” 〔T39n1785 0082c13〕. In explaining the title he says, 「此品從能所得名,能讚是三番菩薩、所讚是一佛世尊」—“This chapter is named from the agent and object: those able to praise are three groups of bodhisattvas, while the one praised is the single Buddha, the World-Honored One” 〔T39n1785 0082c14〕. The combined old recension has sixty-five and a half four-character stanzas, divided as 「一二十行諸菩薩說、二十七行信相說、三二十八行半樹神說」—“First, twenty stanzas spoken by the bodhisattvas; second, seventeen stanzas spoken by Faith-Mark; third, twenty-eight and a half stanzas spoken by the tree deity” 〔T39n1785 0083a03〕. Zhiyi establishes a large-scale outline of the complete chapter here and does not explain Faith-Mark’s seventeen stanzas one by one.

Zhili’s Record on the Words and Phrases of the Sūtra of Golden Light

T1786 is Zhili’s line-by-line record on Zhiyi’s Words and Phrases. Its outline heading explicitly reads 「七、〈讚佛品〉。初、解題」—“Seven: The Praise of the Buddha Chapter. First, explaining the title” 〔T39n1786 0154c16〕. Zhili enumerates three groups capable of praise: the bodhisattva assembly at the beginning of the sūtra, Faith-Mark, and the good woman who is the tree deity 〔T39n1786 0154c18〕. He also reorganizes the textual divisions of the whole chapter and explains, 「恐新學者不曉,今粗科釋。」—“Fearing that new students may not understand, I will now give a rough outline and explanation” 〔T39n1786 0155b19〕. His line-by-line record of Faith-Mark’s praise follows:

No.Zhili’s line-by-line recordOld-recension section recorded
二、正說偈,二:」—“Second, Faith-Mark’s speech, in two parts: first, the sūtra compiler’s narration; second, the verses properly spoken, in two parts” 〔T39n1786 0156a21〕.The compiler’s narration and the verses proper.
—“A general praise of the qualities of the marks and excellent characteristics. ‘In their thousands’ gives a large number” 〔T39n1786 0156a22〕.General praise in the opening line.
3「二、別讚大小相海,五:初、別讚二種光相」—“Second, a particular praise of the ocean of major and minor marks, in five parts: first, particular praise of two kinds of radiant marks” 〔T39n1786 0156a23〕, followed by explanations of golden radiance, bodily light, and the exalted body.Four lines on pure form and light.
—“This explains that the light both gives and rescues. Formerly, as Dragon-Venerable, he praised the Buddha’s body for emitting great light, extinguishing all suffering throughout the three realms, and enabling all sentient beings to receive happiness. Praising the Buddha today, he again praises the light for extinguishing suffering and giving happiness, as can be seen in the text” 〔T39n1786 0156b02〕.Light extinguishing suffering and giving happiness.
—“A general praise of the faculties, marks, and excellent characteristics” 〔T39n1786 0156b05〕.Faculties, marks, and excellent characteristics.
—“Praise of the hair-mark. The peacock’s neck, kings of bees, and the like all compare the hair’s deep-blue color, as in the excellent characteristic among the eighty that describes hair the color of blue jewels” 〔T39n1786 0156b10〕.Deep-blue hair, peacock’s neck, and kings of bees.
—“Replete with qualities: purity, loving-kindness and compassion, and measureless meditative concentrations have long adorned him, and therefore the excellent characteristic of his hair is softness” 〔T39n1786 0156b12〕.Loving-kindness, compassion, meditative concentration, and the excellent characteristic of the hair.
—“This explains the function of adorning the body and accomplishing the fruit; the meaning is evident” 〔T39n1786 0156b14〕.Marks and excellent characteristics adorning the body.
—“This explains the merit of gathering in beings and inspiring praise. Whether major marks or excellent characteristics, whether large or small, all can tame beings, make their minds gentle, and enable them to receive every happiness; therefore he is praised by the buddhas” 〔T39n1786 0156b15〕.Taming, gentleness, and happiness.
—“This explains qualities replete with light. The qualities are lofty and vast, like Sumeru rising visibly from the great ocean” 〔T39n1786 0156b17〕.Light and Mount Sumeru.
—“It further uses comparisons to praise the two major marks of the teeth and the tuft” 〔T39n1786 0156b19〕.White teeth and the tuft between the brows; at 0156b19 the text turns to the tree deity’s speech.

Elsewhere in his divisions of the whole chapter, Zhili points out that Zhiyi included the three stanzas in which the Tathāgata rises from samādhi within the tree deity’s section. He proposes instead that the sixty-five and a half stanzas be divided into the bodhisattvas’ three rounds of speech and the Tathāgata’s speech after rising from samādhi 〔T39n1786 0155b12〕. This is the Record on the Words and Phrases carrying forward and re-outlining the Words and Phrases; it is not conflated with T1784 as a single work.

Jizang’s Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light

Jizang first locates the Praise of the Buddha chapter in the circulation division 〔T39n1787 0173c02〕, then says, 「就大段第二此間大士讚中有二:初信相讚、後樹神讚」—“Within the second major section, the praise by the great beings here has two parts: first, Faith-Mark’s praise; later, the tree deity’s praise” 〔T39n1787 0173c24〕. He further divides Faith-Mark’s praise into particular praise and general commendation. The particular praise is divided into physical body, merit and wisdom, and conclusion; physical body is further divided into substance and function, while the general commendation is further divided into merit and wisdom with physical body, outward transformation, and inner virtue. This outline is based on Dharmakṣema’s seventeen stanzas. It is recorded alongside Huizhao’s outline based on Yijing’s eight and a half stanzas, without converting one into the terms of the other.

Profound-Meaning Layer: Zhili’s Supplementary Record on the Profound Meaning

T1784 belongs to the profound-meaning layer explaining Zhiyi’s Profound Meaning; it is not a line-by-line record. Zhili recalls here, 「金龍尊王是過去讚,信相菩薩是現在讚」—“King Golden Dragon Venerable is praise in the past, while Bodhisattva Faith-Mark is praise in the present” 〔T39n1784 0014c13〕. He also establishes, 「讚有三種,謂讚丈六、尊特、法性」—“Praise is of three kinds: praise of the sixteen-foot body, the exalted body, and dharma-nature” 〔T39n1784 0044c01〕, using the sequence of three kinds of praise, repentance, and the three bodies as collateral illumination of the entire sūtra. These two passages serve only as collateral evidence on the profound-meaning layer. Zhili’s line-by-line material for the present chapter remains assigned to T1786, the Record on the Words and Phrases. The two works and their layers are kept distinct and are not collectively called Zhili’s line-by-line commentary.

Recorded without Adjudicating

On the basis of the eight and a half seven-character stanzas, Huizhao distinguishes the three bodies; on the basis of sixty-five and a half four-character stanzas, Zhiyi distinguishes three groups of bodhisattvas; Zhili then provides a rough outline of Faith-Mark’s successive passages for new students; Jizang analyzes physical body, merit and wisdom, outward transformation, and inner virtue. All four lines of reading follow the translation and commentarial form on which they rely. This apparatus preserves their original wording and levels, neither forcing them into one outline nor adjudicating the relative standing of their doctrines.

V. Terminology

TermScriptural ground and ancient transmissionUsage in this apparatus
妙幢/信相 · Wonderful Banner / Faith-MarkT665 has 「妙幢菩薩」—“Bodhisattva Wonderful Banner” 〔T16n0665 0454c29〕; T663 has 「信相菩薩」—“Bodhisattva Faith-Mark” 〔T16n0663 0357a25〕, and T664 has 「信相菩薩」—“Bodhisattva Faith-Mark” 〔T16n0664 0400a26〕. Huizhao transmits the sound-form Quluzhiluo, glossed “wonderful,” in 「梵云鴝嚧只囉,此云妙」 〔T39n1788 0338a20〕, and also records 「舊云信相」—“The old translation says Faith-Mark” 〔T39n1788 0338a23〕.Wonderful Banner follows the base recension; the transmitted sound-form and old translated name are separately listed, and none replaces another. No Sanskrit restoration is asserted.
百福相 · marks produced by a hundred merits「牟尼百福相圓滿」—“The Sage’s marks produced by a hundred merits are perfectly complete” 〔T16n0665 0455a02〕; the two old recensions speak of the World-Honored One’s hundred merits and wondrous marks and excellent characteristics.Refers to the perfectly complete marks and excellent characteristics praised in this stanza; no additional enumeration is supplied.
大喜、大捨、大慈、大悲 · great sympathetic joy, great equanimity, great loving-kindness, and great compassion「大喜大捨淨莊嚴,大慈大悲皆具足」—“Great sympathetic joy and great equanimity purify and adorn him; great loving-kindness and great compassion are complete” 〔T16n0665 0455a10〕; Huizhao judges these to be the four immeasurables 〔T39n1788 0338b21〕.The sūtra line is recorded verbatim; “four immeasurables” is marked as a commentarial judgment.
菩提分法 · factors of awakening「眾妙相好為嚴飾,菩提分法之所成」—“The many wondrous marks and excellent characteristics form his adornment, accomplished through the factors of awakening” 〔T16n0665 0455a11〕; Huizhao says this praises the cause of the marks and excellent characteristics 〔T39n1788 0338b21〕.No distinct sequence of cultivation is inferred beyond the commentary’s explanation.
光相/光明 · radiant marks / lightT665’s main text reads 「如來光相極圓滿」—“The Tathāgata’s radiant marks are perfectly complete” 〔T16n0665 0455a14〕; the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Palace editions read “light,” as does Huizhao’s cited text. The base retains “radiant marks”; the variant and the commentary’s citation are preserved separately.
頗梨/玻瓈 · two transmitted character forms for crystalT665’s main text reads 「光潤鮮白等頗梨」—“Glossy and soft, bright and pure white like crystal” 〔T16n0665 0455a18〕; the Ming edition and Huizhao’s cited text use the alternate character form. Each work retains its own original characters.

VI. Similes · Rhetoric

Simile in the sūtraVerbatim scriptural groundMeaning praised
A thousand suns「廣大清淨人樂觀,猶如千日光明照」—“Vast and pure, he delights those who see him, like the light of a thousand suns shining” 〔T16n0665 0455a03〕Purity that delights the beholder and magnificent light.
An assemblage of wondrous jewels「焰彩無邊光熾盛,如妙寶聚相端嚴」—“The colors of his flames are boundless and his light blazes brilliantly; his majestic marks resemble an assemblage of wondrous jewels” 〔T16n0665 0455a04〕Boundless flaming colors and majesty.
The rising sun, red and white, with gold「如日初出映虛空,紅白分明間金色」—“Like the rising sun reflected in empty space, red and white appear distinctly with gold between them” 〔T16n0665 0455a05〕Clearly distinguished colors of light.
A golden mountain「亦如金山光普照,悉能周遍百千土」—“Like a golden mountain, his light shines everywhere and can pervade hundreds of thousands of lands” 〔T16n0665 0455a06〕The light’s universal illumination and pervasion.
Black bees gathered on flowers「頭髮柔軟紺青色,猶如黑蜂集妙華」—“His hair is soft and deep blue, like black bees gathered on wondrous flowers” 〔T16n0665 0455a09〕The soft, deep-blue characteristic of the hair.
A blazing sun「如來光相極圓滿,猶如赫日遍空中」—“The Tathāgata’s radiant marks are perfectly complete, like a blazing sun throughout the sky” 〔T16n0665 0455a14〕Perfectly complete radiant marks.
Mount Sumeru「佛如須彌功德具,示現能周於十方」—“The Buddha is like Mount Sumeru, complete in qualities; his manifestations can pervade the ten directions” 〔T16n0665 0455a15〕Completeness of qualities and manifestation in the ten directions.
Shell and snow「如來金口妙端嚴,齒白齊密如珂雪」—“The Tathāgata’s golden mouth is wondrous and majestic; his teeth are white, even, and closely set like shell and snow” 〔T16n0665 0455a16〕The teeth’s whiteness, evenness, and close setting.
Crystal and the full moon「光潤鮮白等頗梨,猶如滿月居空界」—“Glossy and soft, bright and pure white like crystal, it resembles the full moon abiding in empty space” 〔T16n0665 0455a18〕The tuft between the brows as lustrous, bright, pure white, and perfectly radiant.

Through light, color, mountains, jewels, bees, flowers, snow, and the moon, the chapter repeatedly renders the marks and excellent characteristics; twice it directly joins light to pervasion, extinction of suffering, and the giving of happiness. The similes do more than describe visible beauty: they carry the praised qualities outward toward what sentient beings receive.

VII. Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward

Yijing’s Chapters 27 through 29 divide the two old recensions’ single Praise of the Buddha chapter into three: the bodhisattvas’ praise, Wonderful Banner’s praise, and the bodhi-tree deity’s praise. The World-Honored One’s confirmations before and after the present chapter, together with the word “also,” carry the three passages forward as a sequence. T663 and T664 retain the tree deity’s praise immediately after Faith-Mark’s, and the World-Honored One rises from samādhi to respond only at the end of the whole chapter. The difference in division and combination illuminates the texts reciprocally and need not be ranked.

Carrying forward also appears in the ancient commentaries’ division of labor. Zhiyi’s Words and Phrases first establishes the large-scale outline of three groups of bodhisattvas. Zhili’s Record on the Words and Phrases, because he “feared that new students may not understand,” gives a rough outline of Faith-Mark’s praise passage by passage. Jizang divides the old translation through physical body, merit and wisdom, outward transformation, and inner virtue. Huizhao, on the basis of the new translation’s eight and a half stanzas, distinguishes transformation, enjoyment, and praise common to both buddhas. Sūtra remains sūtra and commentary remains commentary: the same verses praising the Buddha disclose their meanings through different translations and ancient readings without replacing one another.

VIII. Placement of the Editions

  1. Base recension: T16n0665, The Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King, fascicle ten; chapter title at 0454c28 and body at 0454c29–0455a20.
