The first thing to appear in this chapter is not a great general displaying his power, but a company of protectors choosing to conceal their forms.
The yakṣa general Sengshen’erye and the yakṣa deities of the twenty-eight divisions will go wherever the king of sūtras is taught. Cities, villages, mountain marshes, empty forests, royal palaces, and monastic residences all number among their destinations. Once there, they each conceal their form and protect the Dharma teacher wherever the teacher may be.
If they cannot be seen, what remains of their protection?
The sūtra answers not with a marvelous apparition, but by listing the changes that occur in the teacher: lucid speech, a body filled with strength, courageous and vigorous spiritual power, accomplished wisdom-light, right recollection that neither retreats nor yields, a body that does not decline, faculties at ease, and joy constantly arising. Whether protection has taken place is not first measured by whether a protector has appeared. It is seen in whether a person transmitting the Dharma can speak clearly, remember steadily, and pass on the received teaching in peace and happiness.
Nor are the listeners forgotten. Men, women, boys, and girls are rescued, protected, and embraced even if they uphold only one four-line stanza, one sentence, the title of the king of sūtras, the name of one Tathāgata, or the name of one bodhisattva, provided that they form the resolve to invoke the name and make offerings with reverence. True protection of the Dharma guards not only someone able to teach a complete scripture; it also guards the person who has just received a single sentence of Dharma.
At this point, the general raises another question: why is he named Right Understanding? He answers that he can know, understand, rightly awaken, and rightly observe; that he possesses inconceivable wisdom-light, wisdom-torch, wisdom-practice, and wisdom-accumulation; and that he can penetrate the sphere of wisdom. Only then does he say that, because of this meaning, he can bring the preceding benefits to the teacher.
Protection of the Dharma is therefore joined to right understanding. The general forms his name through knowing, understanding, awakening, and observing, and then says that because of this meaning he can strengthen the Dharma teacher, make the teacher’s words lucid and recollection complete, and enable the scripture to circulate widely without swiftly disappearing.
The latter half of the chapter turns to the dhāraṇī. The sūtra preserves its sounds in full, then describes a concrete rite: image, square altar, four full jars, incense and flowers, fire pit, mustard seed designated by the transmitted Han sound-form 蘇摩, 108 recitations, and one offering to the fire with each recitation. When accomplishment is reached, the general who earlier attended invisibly manifests in person and asks the practitioner what is required. Gold, silver, hidden treasure, traveling through the sky, the divine eye, knowledge of another’s thoughts, freedom of action, the cutting off of afflictions, and liberation are all listed side by side in the scripture.
Yet what the Buddha finally praises is not manifestation itself. He praises the general for benefiting sentient beings, speaking the spiritual formula, protecting the true Dharma, and bringing boundless benefit. Visibility and invisibility are simply different moments within protection. What runs through the whole chapter is the teacher gaining strength, the listener being embraced, the scripture continuing to circulate, and sentient beings obtaining benefit.
Must true protection of the Dharma, then, be seen? The chapter’s answer is this: the protector may remain invisible, but what protection accomplishes cannot be allowed to disappear. When a sentence of Dharma is spoken clearly, received reverently by one person, and enables that person to leave suffering and obtain happiness, wisdom-light has already arisen between speaking and hearing.

A vernacular translation of Yijing’s Tang translation of The Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King, fascicle eight, Chapter 19, The Yakṣa General Sengshen’erye. The dhāraṇī is preserved in the exact characters of the base text, including full-width spaces, repeated syllables, variant characters, and interlinear notes. Its transcribed sounds are not translated or normalized.
Invisible Protection of Preachers and Listeners
At that time, the yakṣa general Sengshen’erye and the yakṣa deities of the twenty-eight divisions rose from their seats in the assembly. They bared their right shoulders, placed their right knees on the ground, joined their palms, and addressed the Buddha:
“World-Honored One, wherever this Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King is proclaimed and circulated, whether in the present or the future—whether in a city or village, a mountain marsh or empty forest, a royal palace, or a monastic residence—I, the yakṣa general Sengshen’erye, will go there together with the yakṣa deities of the twenty-eight divisions. Each of us will conceal our form and protect the Dharma teacher wherever the teacher may be, so that the teacher remains free from decline and distress and constantly enjoys peace and happiness.
“Those who listen to the Dharma—whether men or women, boys or girls—may receive and uphold even one four-line stanza from this sūtra, or uphold only a single sentence, or remember the opening title of this king of sūtras, or the name of one Tathāgata or one bodhisattva in it. If they give rise to the resolve to invoke that name and make offerings with reverence, I will rescue, protect, and embrace them, so that they meet with no disaster or sudden calamity, leave suffering behind, and obtain happiness.”
Why He Is Named Right Understanding
The yakṣa general Sengshen’erye continued:
“World-Honored One, why am I named Right Understanding? The Buddha has personally verified the causes and conditions for this name. I know all dharmas and understand all dharmas. I understand all dharmas according to all that exists and according to how it is, and I understand the differences among the kinds and essential natures of dharmas.
“World-Honored One, I am able to understand dharmas in this way. I possess inconceivable wisdom-light, an inconceivable wisdom-torch, inconceivable wisdom-practice, and an inconceivable wisdom-accumulation; I can also penetrate the inconceivable sphere of wisdom.
“World-Honored One, with regard to all dharmas, I can rightly know, rightly understand, rightly awaken, and rightly observe. World-Honored One, because of these causes and conditions, I, the yakṣa general, am named Right Understanding.”
Giving Strength to the Preacher and Benefit to the Listener
“Because of this meaning, I can make the Dharma teacher’s speech lucid, eloquent, and fully adorned. I can also cause vital energy to enter through the teacher’s pores, filling the body with strength and making its majestic spiritual power courageous and vigorous, so that inconceivable wisdom-light is fully accomplished. The teacher will obtain right recollection without retreating or yielding; the body will be strengthened without declining, the faculties will be at ease, and joy will constantly arise.
“For this reason, this sūtra will be widely proclaimed and circulated throughout Jambudvīpa for those sentient beings who have planted roots of goodness and cultivated meritorious deeds in the presence of hundreds of thousands of buddhas; it will not swiftly disappear. After hearing this sūtra, those sentient beings will obtain inconceivable great wisdom-light and a measureless accumulation of merit and wisdom. In future lives, throughout measureless koṭis of nayutas of eons, they will experience inconceivable, excellent happiness among humans and gods. They will constantly encounter the buddhas, swiftly realize unsurpassed complete and perfect awakening, and never again pass through the realm of Yama or the extreme suffering of the three evil destinies.”
Right Understanding Personally Recites the Dhāraṇī
At that time, the yakṣa general Right Understanding again addressed the Buddha:
“World-Honored One, I possess a dhāraṇī. I will now personally recite it before the Buddha in order to benefit and have compassion for all sentient beings.” He then recited the spiritual formula:
What Upholders Obtain and How to Perform the Formula Rite
“If someone is able to receive and uphold this luminous formula, I will provide that person with the pleasant supports of life: food and drink, clothing, flowers, fruit, and rare things. Whether that person seeks men or women, boys or girls, gold, silver, jewels, or ornaments, I will provide them all, so that nothing wished for is lacking.
“This luminous formula possesses great power. When the formula is recited, I will swiftly come to that place, remove every obstruction, and bring the practitioner’s wishes to fulfillment.
“When upholding this formula, one should know its method. First paint an image of the yakṣa Sengshen’erye, four or five feet high, holding the implement written 鉾鑹 in his hand. Before the image, make a square altar and place upon it four full jars of honey-water or sugar-water, together with paste incense, powdered incense, burning incense, and flower garlands. Before the altar, make a fire pit in the ground and place charcoal within it. Burn the mustard seed designated by the transmitted Han sound-form 蘇摩 in the pit while reciting the preceding formula 108 times, making one offering to the fire with each recitation.
“Continue until I, the yakṣa general, come in person and manifest my body. I will ask the practitioner two things: ‘What do you require? What does your mind seek?’ The practitioner should state the matter in reply, and I will then bring everything requested to fulfillment exactly as spoken.
“The practitioner may require gold, silver, or hidden treasure; may wish to become an immortal and travel through the sky; may seek the divine eye or knowledge of another’s thoughts; may wish to act freely toward all sentient beings; or may wish to cut off afflictions and swiftly obtain liberation. All these will be accomplished.”
The Buddha Praises This Protection of the Dharma
At that time, the World-Honored One told the yakṣa general Right Understanding:
“Excellent, excellent! You are able to benefit all sentient beings in this way, speak this spiritual formula, and protect the true Dharma. The merit and benefit are boundless.”
At the beginning of this chapter, the yakṣa general Sengshen’erye rises together with the yakṣa deities of the twenty-eight divisions. They bare their shoulders, place their right knees on the ground, join their palms, and address the Buddha. The first action they describe is not the display of their forms but the concealment of them; the places they will go are wherever the king of sūtras is being proclaimed and circulated. A city, a village, a mountain marsh, an empty forest, a royal palace, or a monastic residence can all become a place where the Dharma is taught. The chapter thus begins with a practical question: if the true Dharma is to remain in the world, what exactly must be protected?
The sūtra begins its answer with speaker and listener. It then explains the name Right Understanding and the benefits that wisdom can accomplish, before proceeding to the dhāraṇī, its rite, and the Buddha’s praise. Spiritual power does not hover apart from the teaching of the Dharma. It takes effect in whether one person can speak the Dharma clearly, whether another can receive and uphold it, and even whether the scripture will swiftly disappear.
Protecting the Speaker and the Smallest Act of Upholding
The yakṣa general first promises to protect the Dharma teacher. Together with the deities of the twenty-eight divisions, he will go wherever the scripture circulates, conceal his form, and remain in attendance, so that the teacher leaves decline and distress behind and constantly enjoys peace and happiness. Here, protection of the Dharma is not an abstract slogan. It protects a person who is actually teaching, keeping that person’s body and mind from being crushed by decline and distress.
The sūtra then lists the listeners one by one: men, women, boys, and girls. The amount upheld grows progressively smaller: one four-line stanza, one sentence, the opening title of the king of sūtras, the name of one Tathāgata in the scripture, or the name of one bodhisattva. If they give rise to the resolve to invoke that name and make offerings with reverence, they are included among those rescued, protected, and embraced; they leave disasters, sudden calamities, and suffering behind and obtain happiness.
This sequence matters. Whether a scripture can remain in the world depends not only on its being expounded in full, but also on whether the smallest act of hearing is received. One person may remember only a sentence, another may uphold only the title, and another may invoke only one Tathāgata or one bodhisattva. The sūtra does not exclude them because the amount is small. Protection therefore extends toward both ends at once: at one end stands the teacher who expounds the entire scripture; at the other stands the person who has just formed the resolve and received only its smallest unit.
Right Understanding: Protection Is Not Power Alone
The yakṣa general next asks why he is named Right Understanding. His answer begins with what he knows. He says that he knows dharmas, understands all dharmas, understands all dharmas according to all that exists and according to how it is, and understands the differences among the kinds and essential natures of dharmas. He then lists inconceivable wisdom-light, wisdom-torch, wisdom-practice, and wisdom-accumulation, and says that he can penetrate the inconceivable sphere of wisdom. Finally, right knowing, right understanding, right awakening, and right observation bring his account of the name Right Understanding to completion.
The sūtra does not establish this general’s identity through courageous power alone. Immediately after explaining his name, he says, “Because of this meaning,” he can strengthen the Dharma teacher. This sentence joins knowing to protecting. Protecting the teaching cannot consist only in strength stationed beside the teacher; it must also keep the teacher’s words, recollection, and wisdom from failing.
Within the same chapter, the name also retains two faces. The chapter title, the general’s entrance, and the end of the spiritual formula use Sengshen’erye, while the question and conclusion about his name, his request to recite the dhāraṇī, and the Buddha’s address use Right Understanding. The two names alternate and refer to the same general who speaks, protects the Dharma, and transmits the formula, while each appears in its own context.
The benefits obtained by the teacher are therefore stated one by one. The teacher’s words are to be lucid and the explanation clear, fully adorned; vital energy enters through the pores, the body fills with strength, and majestic spiritual power becomes courageous and vigorous. Inconceivable wisdom-light is accomplished; right recollection neither retreats nor yields; the body is strengthened without declining; the faculties are at ease; and joy constantly arises. These benefits extend across speech, bodily strength, wisdom, recollection, the body itself, and the faculties. What the sūtra protects is not a disembodied voice but a whole person teaching the Dharma.
When the Speaker Is Protected, the Scripture Does Not Swiftly Disappear
The sūtra next turns from the teacher toward a longer course of circulation. Certain sentient beings have already planted roots of goodness and cultivated meritorious deeds in the presence of hundreds of thousands of buddhas. For their sake, the king of sūtras is widely proclaimed throughout Jambudvīpa and does not swiftly disappear. After hearing it, they obtain inconceivable great wisdom-light and a measureless accumulation of merit and wisdom. Through long future eons they experience excellent happiness among humans and gods, constantly encounter the buddhas, swiftly realize unsurpassed awakening, and no longer pass through the realm of Yama or the extreme suffering of the three evil destinies.
A clear continuity forms here. If the teacher is able to speak, the scripture can circulate. If the scripture does not disappear, those who already have roots of goodness have the opportunity to hear it. What they obtain through hearing then unfolds from wisdom and merit all the way to encountering buddhas, awakening, and freedom from the evil destinies. Protecting a Dharma teacher never protects only one act of teaching; it protects the possibility that the scripture will continue to take place in the world through speaking and listening.
Nor does the sūtra merge the teacher and listeners into a single group. The teacher’s benefits have their own express list, and the listeners’ benefits have theirs. What each person obtains is established according to the corresponding sentence of the scripture. This clarity keeps protection of the Dharma from becoming a vague benediction and makes every position in the scene of transmission visible.
The Sounds of the Dhāraṇī, the Upholder’s Benefits, and the Rite
Only after speaking of wisdom and the benefits of hearing does the yakṣa general Right Understanding request permission to recite the dhāraṇī. He says that he will recite it personally before the Buddha in order to benefit sentient beings and have compassion for them. The sūtra then preserves the formula’s transcribed sounds in full, together with its phonetic notes and repeated syllables. It does not explain the meaning of each sound; immediately after the formula, it states what upholders obtain and how to perform the rite.
Following the formula, the sūtra first describes the upholder’s supports for living: food and drink, clothing, flowers, fruit, and rare things, and whatever is sought among men, women, boys, girls, gold, silver, jewels, and ornaments, so that nothing is lacking. Only then does it give the formula rite. The image is four or five feet tall and holds the implement written 鉾鑹. A square altar is placed before it, with four full jars of honey-water or sugar-water, paste incense, powdered incense, burning incense, and flower garlands. A fire pit is made in the ground before the altar, charcoal is placed within it, and the mustard seed designated by the transmitted Han sound-form 蘇摩 is burned once for each recitation, for a total of 108 recitations.
This passage states both the supports of life and the method of practice in full. It enumerates pleasant supports, food and drink, clothing, flowers, fruit, and rare things; it separately enumerates men, women, boys, girls, gold, silver, jewels, and ornaments. The quantities in the rite are equally definite: the image is four or five feet high, four full jars stand on the altar, and the formula is recited 108 times, with each recitation matched by one offering to the fire. Together, these items and numbers lead through the sequence of practice that precedes fulfillment according to one’s wish.
Objects, directions, numbers, and actions together constitute the rite stated in the sūtra: first paint the image, establish the altar, set out the jars, and prepare incense and flowers; then make the fire pit, place the charcoal, burn mustard seed, and recite. Each action follows the preceding one, proceeding from preparation of the ritual space through 108 recitations and one offering to the fire for each.
The sūtra first says that the luminous formula possesses great power: during its recitation, the yakṣa general swiftly comes to the place, removes obstructions, and brings wishes to fulfillment. Only then does it set out the rite in detail. When the method has been completed, the general comes in person, manifests his body, asks what the practitioner seeks, and brings it to fulfillment. Upholding, preparing the altar, reciting, manifestation, asking about the wish, and accomplishment follow one another within a single passage.
This sequence states both what the practitioner does and what the yakṣa general comes to accomplish. The actions on neither side are omitted, and the two respond to each other from beginning to end.
From Invisible Attendance to Visible Manifestation and the Question about One’s Wish
At the beginning of the chapter, the yakṣa deities each conceal their form and protect wherever they go. When the formula rite reaches accomplishment, the yakṣa general comes in person, manifests his body, and asks the practitioner what is required and what the mind seeks. The former protects the teaching and hearing of the Dharma; the latter responds to a concrete wish. The sūtra lists gold and silver, hidden treasure, becoming an immortal and traveling through the sky, the divine eye, knowledge of another’s thoughts, free action toward all sentient beings, cutting off afflictions, and swiftly obtaining liberation. The wishes concern supports, capacities, and liberation. The sūtra places them side by side and does not reduce the practitioner’s wishes to a single kind.
Finally, the World-Honored One exclaims “Excellent!” and praises the general for benefiting all sentient beings, speaking this spiritual formula, protecting the true Dharma, and bringing boundless benefit. Looking back on the chapter from these words, “protecting the true Dharma” has acquired concrete content: going to the place where it is taught, protecting the teacher, embracing the listener, and keeping the scripture from disappearing; it also includes transmitting the dhāraṇī and its rite so that wishes may be fulfilled. Invisible attendance at the beginning of the chapter receives the Buddha’s confirmation at its end. What the chapter brings to the fore is not the protector’s own appearance but the way in which the true Dharma continues to benefit sentient beings.
In his praise the Buddha calls him the yakṣa general Right Understanding, while the end of the spiritual formula retains the name Sengshen’erye. The chapter thus begins with Sengshen’erye, passes through the general’s account of Right Understanding, and concludes with the two names carrying one another in alternation. The names are not leveled into one, yet the direction of protection remains constant: the teacher receives strength, the listener is embraced, the hearer gains wisdom and merit, and the true Dharma thereby does not swiftly disappear.
From rising and addressing the Buddha to invisible attendance; from describing what he knows to strengthening teachers and listeners; from personally reciting the dhāraṇī to manifesting, asking about a wish, and receiving the Buddha’s confirmation—every step in the scripture returns to one matter: enabling the Dharma to be spoken, heard, and upheld, and to continue through the benefit sentient beings receive.
Through the Eye of Consciousness-Only: The Mirror Is Not the Sūtra
The five sections above follow only what Yijing’s recension itself says. The paragraphs below borrow Huizhao’s Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King as a consciousness-only side mirror. A mirror can illuminate the structure among the sentences, but it is not the source of the sūtra. Huizhao first places this chapter within the sequence of five chapters that benefit merit and wisdom: the preceding chapters treat eloquence, clothing, and food, while this chapter treats wisdom. He also preserves another explanation according to which the preceding chapters separately benefit wisdom and merit, while this one benefits both merit and wisdom 〔T39n1788 0312b09–b16〕. Both explanations occur in the same commentary and need not be pressed into a single line.
In explaining the name, Huizhao renders Sengshen’erye as Right Understanding and yakṣa as courageous and vigorous 〔T39n1788 0312b19〕. In resolving a difficulty, he distinguishes the four kinds of eloquence in the preceding chapter from this chapter’s wisdom as function from essence, and as subsequently acquired wisdom from wisdom that also includes the fundamental 〔0312b22〕. The same commentary also places the general, variously, at the third, fifth, or tenth of the ten grounds 〔0312b14–b17〕. These are judgments in the mirror, not a stage claimed by the general in the sūtra.
Huizhao assigns knowing to subsequently acquired wisdom and understanding to fundamental wisdom. He reads according to all that exists and according to how it is through the concrete entities and principles of dharmas and through conventional and ultimate truth; he also preserves two routes, one from the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra through suchness and another from the Abhidharmasamuccaya through the aggregates, sense fields, elements, four truths, and sixteen aspects 〔T39n1788 0312c22–0313a04〕. For wisdom-light, wisdom-torch, wisdom-practice, and wisdom-accumulation, he first distinguishes subsequently acquired wisdom, fundamental wisdom, differentiated practice, and the accumulation of intrinsic nature, then preserves another explanation in which wisdom-practice is the function of wisdom in practice and understanding and wisdom-accumulation is its essence 〔0313a07–a14〕.
Huizhao further outlines eight benefits obtained by the teacher and six by the listener, and infers from the listener’s benefits that the teacher obtains them too. He divides the latter half on the formula’s power into six levels—request, formula proper, exhortation to practice, method, benefit obtained, and the Buddha’s praise—and further infers that one who seeks wisdom should recite the formula and request manifestation and empowerment, although the scripture abbreviates this without stating it 〔T39n1788 0313a22–0313c22〕. These final two levels are both completions supplied by the commentator and cannot be poured backward into Yijing’s text as direct statements.
Other ancient mirrors stand alongside it. Working from Dharmakṣema’s recension, Zhiyi reads three groups of five sentences through the three contemplations, the three liberations, and the three bodies; Zhili’s Record of the Textual Commentary unfolds those sections further; Jizang interprets them through the two truths as affairs and principles, the two wisdoms, and the benefits of speaker and listener. Each master relies on a different translation and works at a different layer. Returning from these mirrors to the sūtra, one can see that the chapter’s carrying forward does not consist in selecting a single explanation, but in letting knowing and protecting, speech and upholding, and wisdom and compassion continue into one another: only when the true Dharma is rightly understood can it be clearly spoken; only when speaking and listening continue does the protector’s vow truly enter the world of sentient beings.

Placement of the Whole Chapter This chapter takes Yijing’s T16n0665 translation as its base text. Both Dharmakṣema’s translation and the composite recension title it The Chapter on the Spirit Sanzhi. Although the titles differ, the twenty-eight divisions, the deportment of rising from the seat, invisible protection, the general’s account of his name, and the passages on wisdom and benefit correspond; they are therefore collated directly as versions of the same chapter. Each ancient commentary explains the scriptural recension on which it is based. They are recorded below by work and by layer; their alternate readings are recorded without adjudicating.
I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
Boundaries of the Chapter and the Commentary
Yijing’s recension titles the chapter 「僧慎爾耶藥叉大將品第十九」—“The Yakṣa General Sengshen’erye, Chapter Nineteen” 〔T16n0665 0441a25〕, with the title continuing through 0441a26. The chapter body begins with 「爾時,僧慎爾耶藥叉大將,并與二十八部藥叉諸神」—“At that time, the yakṣa general Sengshen’erye, together with the yakṣa deities of the twenty-eight divisions” 〔T16n0665 0441a27〕 and ends with the passage in which the World-Honored One tells the yakṣa general Right Understanding, 「善哉!善哉!」—“Excellent! Excellent!” 〔T16n0665 0442a11〕; its final character occurs at 0442a13. The next chapter title, 「王法正論品第二十」—“The Right Treatise on Royal Dharma, Chapter Twenty” 〔T16n0665 0442a14〕, is no longer part of this chapter. The chapter body has five paragraphs and no verse. Because it is brief and its original paragraphs are clear, no further internal outline is materialized here.
Huizhao’s principal commentary bears the title 「僧慎爾耶藥叉大將品第十九」—“The Yakṣa General Sengshen’erye, Chapter Nineteen” 〔T39n1788 0312b08〕. It begins with 「僧慎爾耶藥叉大將品,三門分別」—“The Chapter on the Yakṣa General Sengshen’erye is distinguished through three gates” 〔T39n1788 0312b09〕 and ends with 「下六佛讚成也」—“The sixth section below is the Buddha’s praise and confirmation” 〔T39n1788 0313c22〕; the next chapter title occurs at 0313c23. Material around 0181c, 0182c, and 0191c belongs to the opening table of contents and general outline, and is not taken as the line-by-line principal commentary on this chapter.
Huizhao’s Three Gates and Textual Outline
Huizhao first establishes three gates: reason for arrival, explanation of the name, and resolution of difficulties. Under reason for arrival, he first says, 「言來意者,五品益福智中,前益四辨及以衣服飲食,今此益其智慧。」—“As for the reason for arrival: among the five chapters that increase merit and wisdom, the preceding chapters increased the four kinds of eloquence, clothing, and food and drink; this chapter now increases wisdom” 〔T39n1788 0312b09〕. He also preserves another explanation: 「又解:前辨才益辨即智,天女、地神益衣食者是福。 —“Another explanation: the preceding chapter on eloquence increased eloquence, which is wisdom; the goddess and earth-deity chapters increased clothing and food, which are merit. This chapter now increases both, and therefore arises” 〔T39n1788 0312b13〕. Both explanations remain and are not fused into one.
His explanation of the name reads, 「釋品名者,僧慎爾耶,此云正了知。 —“In explaining the chapter title: Sengshen’erye means ‘Right Understanding’ here; yakṣa means ‘courageous and vigorous’” 〔T39n1788 0312b19〕. In resolving a difficulty, he asks why the preceding chapter on eloquence, which also concerns wisdom, is followed by another chapter that grants wisdom. He answers by distinguishing essence and function, and fundamental from subsequently acquired wisdom: 「雖俱是智,而體用別。 —“Although both are wisdom, their essence and function differ. The four kinds of eloquence clarify function, whereas this chapter clarifies essence; the four kinds of eloquence are subsequently acquired wisdom, whereas this chapter also extends to fundamental wisdom” 〔T39n1788 0312b23〕.
In his textual outline, Huizhao divides the chapter into two major sections, wisdom and the power of the formula. He first says, 「此品分二,初以智慧益」—“This chapter is divided into two: first, benefit through wisdom” 〔T39n1788 0312b28〕, and then classifies the passage beginning “At that time, Right Understanding” as empowerment through the formula. He further divides the first major section into the one able to protect, the reason protection is possible, and the benefit obtained by those protected. He divides the second into six levels: requesting permission and disclosing the intention, stating the formula itself, exhorting practice for benefit, showing the method of practice, clarifying the benefit obtained, and the Buddha’s praise and confirmation 〔T39n1788 0313c12–c22〕. All these labels are the commentator’s outline; they are not written backward into Yijing’s text as headings enumerated by the sūtra itself.
II. Alternate Translations · Collation of the Three Translations
Identity of the Three Recensions and Direct Evidence That They Are the Same Chapter
| Recension | Chapter title and body | Translation attribution | Opening sentence of the chapter |
|---|---|---|---|
| Yijing’s T16n0665 | The Yakṣa General Sengshen’erye, Chapter Nineteen 〔0441a25〕; body 0441a27–0442a13 | “Imperially commissioned translation by the Tripiṭaka śramaṇa Yijing of the Great Tang” | 「爾時,僧慎爾耶藥叉大將,并與二十八部藥叉諸神」—“At that time, the yakṣa general Sengshen’erye, together with the yakṣa deities of the twenty-eight divisions” 〔0441a27〕 |
| Dharmakṣema’s T16n0663 | The Spirit Sanzhi, Chapter Ten 〔0346b15〕; body 0346b16–0346c22 | 「北涼三藏法師曇無讖譯」—“Translated by the Tripiṭaka Dharma master Dharmakṣema of Northern Liang” 〔0346b14,第三見〕 | 「爾時散脂鬼神大將,及二十八部諸鬼神等」—“At that time, the spirit general Sanzhi and the spirits of the twenty-eight divisions” 〔0346b16〕 |
| Composite T16n0664 | The Spirit Sanzhi, Chapter Fifteen 〔0389b20〕; body 0389b22–0389c27 | 「北涼三藏曇無讖譯」—“Translated by the Tripiṭaka master Dharmakṣema of Northern Liang” 〔0389b21,第五見〕 | 「爾時,散脂鬼神大將軍及二十八部諸鬼神等」—“At that time, the spirit commander-in-chief Sanzhi and the spirits of the twenty-eight divisions” 〔0389b22〕 |
All three recensions contain the twenty-eight divisions, the bared right shoulder and right knee placed on the ground, and invisible attendance protecting preachers and listeners. Yijing’s Sengshen’erye, Right Understanding, and yakṣa, and the two older recensions’ Sanzhi and spirit, are alternate translations of names within the same chapter; the characters of one are not substituted into another.

Yijing’s formula and rite begin with 「爾時,正了知藥叉大將白佛言」—“At that time, the yakṣa general Right Understanding addressed the Buddha” 〔T16n0665 0441c01〕. The two older recensions move directly from the benefits of hearing the Dharma into a passage of homage. Those passages begin respectively with 「南無寶華功德海琉璃金山光照如來」—“Homage to the Tathāgata Precious Flower, Ocean of Qualities, Lapis-Lazuli Golden Mountain Radiance” 〔T16n0663 0346c18〕 and 「南無寶華功德海琉璃金山光照如來」—“Homage to the Tathāgata Precious Flower, Ocean of Qualities, Lapis-Lazuli Golden Mountain Radiance” 〔T16n0664 0389c22〕. This records only expansion and abridgment; neither side is used to supplement the other.
Complete Character-by-Character Differences between Dharmakṣema’s and the Composite Recension
The fixed ranges in the table below are T663 0346b16–0346c22 and T664 0389b22–0389c27, excluding the chapter titles and the composite recension’s translation attribution. There are sixty-four non-identical positions; differences consisting only of punctuation are also transmitted exactly. “Absent” means that the witness has no character at that position. “Complete listing” here applies only to the character-level differences within these two expressly delimited chapter bodies; it does not pass off doctrinal alignment between two translations as textual collation.

Important textual variants include great general or commander-in-chief, the two characters for seat or sitting, because of this intention or because of this, if there are sentient beings or if the many sentient beings, and the two places where the composite recension’s homage lacks Dharmakṣema’s characters for making offerings and being worthy of offerings. Every difference records only the visible wording and does not adjudicate which is preferable.
Alternate Names within the Chapter
Yijing uses Sengshen’erye in the chapter title and opening passage. Within the sūtra the general asks, 「世尊!何故我名正了知?」—“World-Honored One, why am I named Right Understanding?” 〔T16n0665 0441b10〕 and concludes, 「世尊! —“World-Honored One, for these causes and conditions, I, the yakṣa general, am named Right Understanding” 〔T16n0665 0441b17〕. The end of the formula again uses 「僧慎爾耶 莎訶」—“the sound-form Sengshen’erye followed by the transmitted closing sound-form” 〔T16n0665 0441c14〕, while the Buddha’s address reads 「爾時,世尊告正了知藥叉大將曰」—“At that time, the World-Honored One told the yakṣa general Right Understanding” 〔T16n0665 0442a11〕. The sound-form and translated name coexist in the same chapter. They are transmitted character for character and are not standardized into one form.
III. Scriptural Grounds for the Consciousness-Only Meaning (the Point of the Eye)
This section takes the sentences of Yijing’s sūtra as its ground and Huizhao’s principal commentary as its mirror. Every correlation, numbered outline, and inferential completion below is attributed to Huizhao; the sūtra itself directly states only its own terms and benefits.
All Coexisting Explanations within the Same Commentary
First, two explanations of the reason for arrival. The first says that this chapter increases wisdom, because only with wisdom can one avoid explaining the Dharma inversely and becoming attached to clothing and food. The second treats the preceding eloquence as wisdom and the goddess’s and earth deity’s clothing and food as merit, so that this chapter increases both merit and wisdom 〔T39n1788 0312b09–b16〕. Both explanations remain.
Second, three explanations of the deity’s stage within the ten grounds. On the basis of such expressions as wisdom-light, understanding conventional and ultimate truth, and the inconceivable sphere of wisdom, Huizhao proposes in turn, 「此神或是三地菩薩」—“This deity may be a bodhisattva of the third ground” 〔T39n1788 0312b14〕, 「或是五地」—“or of the fifth ground” 〔0312b16〕, and 「或第十地」—“or of the tenth ground” 〔0312b16〕, without choosing one. He then cites a causal account from an ancient scripture: 「《大集經》第二十一明此大士過去尸棄等佛所願作鬼神,即舊經等云散支大將也。」—“Fascicle twenty-one of the Mahāsaṃnipāta Sūtra explains that in the past, in the presence of the Buddha named by the transmitted sound-form Shiqi and others, this great being vowed to become a spirit; he is precisely the General Sanzhi spoken of in the older sūtra and related texts” 〔T39n1788 0312b17〕.
Third, two paired distinctions between eloquence and the wisdom of this chapter. Although both are wisdom, one distinction treats the four kinds of eloquence as function and this chapter as essence; another treats the four kinds of eloquence as subsequently acquired wisdom and this chapter as also including fundamental wisdom. Under the second explanation of the reason for arrival, the difficulty is instead resolved by distinguishing general and particular 〔T39n1788 0312b22–b25〕.
Fourth, knowing and understanding. Huizhao judges, 「知後得證知,曉本智曉達」—“Knowing is verified knowing through subsequently acquired wisdom; understanding is penetration through fundamental wisdom” 〔T39n1788 0312c24〕. This is the commentator’s correlation with the two wisdoms and does not alter Yijing’s parallel terms knowing and understanding.
Fifth, according to all that exists and according to how it is. One route explains the former as the exhaustive nature of all that exists, the concrete entities and affairs of dharmas, and conventional truth; the latter as the nature of things as they are, the principles of dharmas, and ultimate truth. Drawing on the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra, it further says that, from the perspective of ultimate meaning, the nature of things as they are refers only to suchness. Another route draws on the Abhidharmasamuccaya: 「盡所有,即蘊處界;如所有,即四諦十六行等,故有差別。」—“All that exists means the aggregates, sense fields, and elements; how it is means the four truths, the sixteen aspects, and so forth, and therefore there is a distinction” 〔T39n1788 0313a03〕. Both routes are recorded in full and are not compressed into a single meaning. The commentary’s transmitted text reads “according to all merit that exists”; this edition records it as transmitted and does not change the character on its own.
Sixth, wisdom-light, wisdom-torch, wisdom-practice, wisdom-accumulation, and the sphere of wisdom. Huizhao first takes wisdom-light as subsequently acquired wisdom and wisdom-torch as fundamental wisdom; wisdom-practice as understanding differentiated practices and wisdom-accumulation as understanding the accumulation of intrinsic natures. For penetrating the sphere of wisdom, he says that fundamental wisdom can comprehend it and subsequently acquired wisdom can penetrate it. He then preserves another explanation: 「或智行即,行解智用。 —“Alternatively, wisdom-practice is the function of wisdom in practice and understanding, while wisdom-accumulation is its essential nature” 〔T39n1788 0313a12〕. Both ends remain.
Seventh, the correlation of knowing, understanding, awakening, and observing. For the sūtra’s right knowing, right understanding, right awakening, and right observation, Huizhao says, 「知曉覺察如次配之,此依前解」—“Knowing, understanding, awakening, and observing are correlated in that order; this follows the preceding explanation” 〔T39n1788 0313a17〕. He expressly marks this as depending only on the preceding explanation and does not present the correlation as the sūtra’s own interpretation.
Eighth, what the preacher and listeners obtain. Huizhao outlines eight items obtained by the preacher and six obtained by those who hear the Dharma. He also infers from the listeners’ benefits that the preacher obtains them as well, calling this the lesser reflecting the superior and an attainment fixed by inference from the meaning 〔T39n1788 0313a22–0313b14〕. This latter level is the commentator’s inference from the meaning, not an explicit statement of the sūtra.
Ninth, inferential completion of what is obtained through the formula’s power. Huizhao divides the material into six levels: request, formula proper, exhortation to practice, method of practice, attainment of benefit, and the Buddha’s praise. He further says that, according to the preceding chapter on eloquence, those seeking wisdom in this chapter should also recite the formula and request the general to manifest and empower them; the text merely omits saying so. He reads cutting off afflictions and swiftly obtaining liberation as the intention of seeking wisdom 〔T39n1788 0313c12–c22〕. This is an ancient commentary’s completion and remains confined to the mirror layer.
Keeping the Commentary’s Cited Text Distinct from the Base Text
Huizhao’s citations of the sūtra cannot be used in reverse to alter Yijing’s base text. At least the following visible variants occur:
| Position | Yijing’s T16n0665 | Huizhao’s citation in T39n1788 |

IV. Explanations of Various Masters
Huizhao’s Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King
Huizhao comments line by line on Yijing’s recension. His three gates, two major sections, and multiple explanations within the same commentary have been recorded above. His explanation of the name renders Sengshen’erye as Right Understanding and yakṣa as courageous and vigorous 〔T39n1788 0312b19〕. His correlations of knowing and understanding and of the four wisdom terms form the consciousness-only side mirror at the end of this edition’s Exposition, but the mirror is not the sūtra.
Zhiyi’s Textual Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light
Zhiyi comments on The Spirit Sanzhi chapter in Dharmakṣema’s recension. The commentary heading reads 「釋散脂鬼神品」—“Explanation of the Chapter on the Spirit Sanzhi” 〔T39n1785 0077a08〕 and extends from 0077a08 through 0078a25. His explanation of the name reads, 「具存梵音,應言散脂修摩,此翻為密。 —“In the full preservation of the Indic sound it should be Sanzhi Xiumo; this is translated as ‘secret.’ Secret has four meanings: secret name, secret practice, secret wisdom, and secret principle, and so forth” 〔T39n1785 0077a09〕.
Zhiyi divides the whole chapter into four sections: protection and support, the statement of the protector’s qualities, benefit to the preacher through the power of wisdom, and homage to the original teacher 〔T39n1785 0077a09–a20〕. He reads the older recension’s three groups of five sentences respectively through the three contemplations, the three truths and three liberations, and the three bodies 〔T39n1785 0077b14–0077c22〕. When correlating the five kinds of knowing with five buddha-natures, the same commentary also preserves two arrangements: 「又一家取果性境界性為五。 —“One lineage takes fruition-nature and object-sphere-nature to make five; another takes fruition-nature and fruit-of-fruition-nature to make five” 〔T39n1785 0077c28〕. It does not select one. The final section further distinguishes the mouth, body, and mind activities of those who transform, and three groups among those transformed: those who have not planted roots are caused to plant them, those whose roots have been planted are brought to maturation, and those whose roots have matured are brought to liberation 〔T39n1785 0078a15〕.
Zhili’s Record of the Textual Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light
The work that truly comments on this chapter line by line is Zhili’s T39n1786 Record of the Textual Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light, not T39n1784, his Supplementary Record to the Profound Meaning. Its outline title explicitly reads, 「第五、〈散脂品〉,二:初、解題」—“Fifth, the Sanzhi Chapter, in two: first, explanation of the title” 〔T39n1786 0144a25〕. Its range extends from 0144a25 through 0146c26, across fascicles five A and five B; the attribution in fascicle five B reads 「宋四明沙門知禮述」—“Composed by the Song-dynasty śramaṇa Zhili of Siming” 〔T39n1786 0145a18,第六見〕.
Following Zhiyi’s Textual Commentary, Zhili further unfolds the four secrets and four sections. He calls the three contemplations correlated with the first five sentences the root practice cultivated by Sanzhi 〔T39n1786 0145a01〕, correlates the next five separately with the three liberations 〔0145b03〕, and the final five separately with the three bodies 〔0145c05〕. He then joins the three bodies, three contemplations, and three liberations as the three virtues of Dharma-body, prajñā, and liberation, correlating them with gold, light, and radiance 〔0145c23〕. Benefit to those able to transform remains divided into mouth, body, and mind; benefit to those transformed remains divided into causing the unplanted to plant, the planted to mature, and the mature to be liberated 〔0146c09〕. These are Zhili’s annotations on Zhiyi’s layer; they are not mixed with sentences from Yijing’s sūtra or Huizhao’s commentary.
Jizang’s Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light
Jizang likewise comments on Dharmakṣema’s recension. Beneath the title he writes, 「〈散脂鬼神品〉 此是大段第四,明與智慧。 —“The Chapter on the Spirit Sanzhi: this is the fourth major section, clarifying the bestowal of wisdom. In the foreign language the name is Sanzhi Xiumo; here it is called the secret spirit” 〔T39n1787 0169a03〕. His chapter commentary extends from 0169a03 through 0169b24.
Jizang first divides it into three: benefit to those who propagate the sūtra, the preacher’s attainment of benefit and consequent ability to propagate it, and taking refuge in the assembly of sages. He interprets the known dharmas through the affairs and principles of conventional truth and those of ultimate truth 〔T39n1787 0169a13〕; divides wisdom-light, wisdom-torch, and the other terms into the essence and function of wisdom 〔0169b01〕; and then lists five matters and three aspects obtained by the preacher and five benefits obtained by listeners—wisdom, qualities, enjoyment of happiness, awakening, and freedom from suffering 〔0169b16〕. These interpretations are recorded alongside those of Zhiyi and Zhili, without shortening one by means of another.
Zhili’s Supplementary Record to the Profound Meaning of the Sūtra of Golden Light and Zhiyi’s Profound Meaning
T39n1784, Zhili’s Supplementary Record to the Profound Meaning of the Sūtra of Golden Light, is not a line-by-line record of this chapter. At the level of the profound meaning, the whole work says only, 「〈四天王品〉、〈散脂〉及〈鬼神品〉皆廣說,常以神力護說聽者,并其國王及以土境。」—“The Four Heavenly Kings, Sanzhi, and Spirits chapters all explain extensively how spiritual power constantly protects preachers and listeners, together with their kings and territories” 〔T39n1784 0014b17〕. It therefore serves only as a side illumination at the level of profound meaning and is not falsely listed as a line-by-line commentary. Zhiyi’s T39n1783 Profound Meaning of the Sūtra of Golden Light is likewise not a sentence-by-sentence commentary on this chapter. The Tiantai materials that do comment line by line are taken separately from T1785, the Textual Commentary, and T1786, the Record of the Textual Commentary. Each of the two works and two layers is returned to its own place.
V. Terminology
Names and Dharmas Known
| Term | Ancient explanation | Boundary of transmission |
|---|---|---|
| Sengshen’erye | Huizhao: 「此云正了知」—“Here it means Right Understanding” 〔T39n1788 0312b19〕 | The sound-form and translated name coexist in Yijing’s chapter and are not standardized into one form |
| Yakṣa | Huizhao: 「此云勇健」—“Here it means courageous and vigorous” 〔T39n1788 0312b20〕 | The older translation “spirit” is not used to alter the base text |
| Sanzhi Xiumo | Zhiyi: 「此翻為密」—“This is translated as secret” 〔T39n1785 0077a09〕; Jizang: 「此云密神」—“Here it means secret spirit” 〔T39n1787 0169a04〕 | Belongs only to the names and meanings in the ancient commentaries on the older recension; it does not replace Sengshen’erye |
| One four-line stanza | Yijing’s original reads 「受持一四句頌」—“receive and uphold one four-line stanza” 〔T16n0665 0441b07〕 | Not normalized or reduced to a generic expression |
| According to all that exists; according to how it is | Huizhao records both the exhaustive nature and the nature of things as they are, and the two routes through the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra and Abhidharmasamuccaya 〔T39n1788 0312c22–0313a04〕 | Commentarial meaning enters only the Apparatus and mirror layer |
| Wisdom-light, wisdom-torch, wisdom-practice, wisdom-accumulation, sphere of wisdom | Yijing lists all five 〔T16n0665 0441b13–b15〕; Huizhao gives correlations with fundamental and subsequently acquired wisdom and another explanation | The sūtra’s terms and the commentary’s correlations remain layered |
The Formula in Yijing’s Recension
The following transcribed sounds are preserved character for character from Yijing’s recension. They are not translated or normalized. All eight transmitted interlinear notes and every full-width space remain in their original positions:

Huizhao’s citation of the formula separately preserves the characters of his commentary witness. Visible variants include 也/耶, 反/切, 哩/里, 茶/荼, 攝/欇, and 咤/他, all enumerated above. The commentary’s wording must not be used to level the sūtra’s formula.
VI. Similes · Rhetoric
One clear rhetorical cluster in this chapter lies not in an added story but in the light and torch named by the text itself. Yijing says in succession, 「我有難思智光,我有難思智炬,我有難思智行,我有難思智聚」—“I have inconceivable wisdom-light; I have an inconceivable wisdom-torch; I have inconceivable wisdom-practice; I have an inconceivable wisdom-accumulation” 〔T16n0665 0441b13〕, and then says that the general can penetrate the inconceivable sphere of wisdom. Huizhao reads wisdom-light as illuminating the teaching, principle, practice, and fruition of the Great Vehicle, and wisdom-torch as dispelling the darkness of ignorance 〔T39n1788 0313a07〕. Working from the older recension, Zhiyi instead compares wisdom-light to the sun and moon that are constantly bright and wisdom-torch to a firebrand that illuminates objects according to conditions 〔T39n1785 0077b28〕. The two masters rely on different sentence forms and offer different interpretations; their readings are placed alongside one another rather than merged into an interpretation spoken by the sūtra itself.
Another repeated rhetoric is concealment and manifestation. During protection the deities each conceal their form and provide support wherever they go 〔T16n0665 0441b04〕; once the formula rite has been completed, the yakṣa general comes in person, manifests a body, and asks what the practitioner seeks 〔T16n0665 0442a04〕. The sūtra simply places invisible protection and visible manifestation to ask about a wish alongside one another; no further symbolic meaning is manufactured from them here.
VII. Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward
This chapter follows the Buddha’s praise of the earth deity Firm and Steadfast and begins a new passage with “At that time,” introducing Sengshen’erye and the twenty-eight divisions. It concludes with 「說此神呪,擁護正法」—“speaking this spiritual formula and protecting the true Dharma” 〔T16n0665 0442a12〕. In the next chapter, the earth goddess Firm and Steadfast requests the teaching of the Right Treatise on Royal Dharma. This is the sequence of the fascicle; no cross-chapter causal chain is added.
The commentarial connections must be attributed separately. Huizhao places this chapter within the sequence of five chapters that increase merit and wisdom, connecting eloquence, clothing, food and drink, and wisdom 〔T39n1788 0312b09〕. In explaining all that exists and how it is, he explicitly cites the Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra and Abhidharmasamuccaya 〔0312c22–0313a04〕. These cross-readings are Huizhao’s path for illuminating the sūtra, not a bibliography announced by Yijing’s text itself.
At the level of transmission, three clear lines carry the chapter forward. Huizhao comments line by line on Yijing’s recension, reading it through the two wisdoms of the Faxiang tradition, conventional and ultimate truth, and the concrete entities and principles of dharmas. Zhiyi’s Textual Commentary comments on Dharmakṣema’s recension, Zhili’s Record further annotates it section by section, and Jizang also establishes a distinct reading through the two truths and two wisdoms on the basis of the older recension. Each line has its textual ground. They are recorded together without allowing one mirror to obscure another. What is carried forward is, first of all, how the sūtra was received, explained, and protected in different translations and ancient commentaries.

The textual basis of this edition is limited to the Han translations and ancient commentaries listed above, each kept within its own work. The two older chapter bodies contain no dhāraṇī; this records only presence or absence within the designated ranges and makes no claim about origin. Placement of the editions states only the presence, absence, division, combination, and ancient commentarial layers visible in the surviving texts.
