When Grain Increases Daily and Storehouses Overflow, Where Will You Let What You Receive Come to Rest?
This chapter does not evade people’s need for material support. The five grains, storehouses, gold and silver, wealth and jewels, cattle and sheep, grain and wheat, food and drink, and clothing are all named one by one.
But the scripture never lets 『求得』—“seeking and obtaining”—stand alone. A person who seeks wealth and grain first cleans a room and also purifies body and mind: arousing reverence and faith, bathing, putting on clean clothing, and applying fragrances. Once the outward room is clean, the inward wish must also stand upon reverence and truth.
Giving Has Already Begun before What Is Sought Arrives
Before the person has obtained any wealth, incense, flowers, food, and drink have already been presented in offering; food has also been scattered in the other directions and given to the deities. Quiet as this sequence is, it sets the direction of the entire chapter: before anything is obtained, the hand has learned to open; before anything is requested, the mind has learned reverence.
The practitioner then invokes every buddha and bodhisattva by name and recites the formula of invitation. The dhāraṇī is transmitted in sound, and the scripture does not explain each syllable. The human task here is to recite and uphold it with utmost sincerity.
A Splendid Seat Stands in the Purified Chamber
A splendid seat is first placed within the altar, adorned with banners and canopies and surrounded by fine flowers. The seat is prepared for the goddess as the practitioner awaits her hearing the invitation, watching over the rite, and coming. What the practitioner can do is observe the precepts for seven days and nights, purify the body at dawn, honor the buddhas in the late afternoon, confess offenses, and dedicate merit and make vows for both self and all sentient beings.
Waiting is therefore not empty. Each day of discipline, every offering, and each confession arranges the person who waits. The goddess enters the chamber, sits, and receives the offering. From then onward she is seen in dreams and truthfully explains the matters sought. The scripture keeps bringing the practitioner back to sincerity and continuity.
The True Direction of Wealth Appears Only after It Has Been Obtained
When the request is fulfilled, the scripture does not stop at happiness. The finest share of the wondrous result is to be offered to the Three Jewels and given to the Goddess of Great Auspiciousness. Dharma assemblies are to be held and further offerings made. The goddess promises lifelong protection and freedom from lack, while the practitioner is instructed to relieve the poor again and again, not to be stingy, and not to keep everything for personal use.
This is the chapter’s deepest turn: from what I need to what another person also needs; from overflowing storehouses to relief for the poor; from one thing sought to universal giving. Material support is not denied, but neither is it permitted to become a sealed endpoint.
Finally, the practitioner is to read this sūtra constantly, keep offerings unbroken, dedicate the merit to awakening, and vow to leave birth and death and swiftly attain liberation. Wealth completes an entire course here: from seeking to obtaining, from obtaining to giving, from giving to dedication, and from dedication toward liberation.
The answer to the opening question, then, lies neither in rejecting full storehouses nor in clutching tightly at what is obtained. Let it become offering, relief, and universal giving. The scripture’s final sentence is the World-Honored One’s praise of the goddess for circulating this sūtra and benefiting both herself and others.

A vernacular rendering of Chapter 17, “The Goddess of Great Auspiciousness Increases Wealth,” from fascicle eight of Yijing’s Tang translation of The Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King. The names of buddhas and bodhisattvas and the transmitted Han transcription of the dhāraṇī are preserved exactly as they appear in the base text; the dhāraṇī is neither translated nor regularized.
The Goddess’s Dwelling in the City Possessor of Wealth and the Garden Wondrous-Flower Merit Radiance
At that time, the Goddess of Great Auspiciousness again addressed the Buddha: “World-Honored One, in the north, the city of the heavenly king Vaiśravaṇa is named Possessor of Wealth. Not far from the city is a garden called Wondrous-Flower Merit Radiance, within which stands a splendid palace made of the seven treasures. World-Honored One, I always dwell there.”
She continued: “If someone wishes the five grains to increase day after day and the storehouses to overflow, that person should arouse a mind of reverence and faith. First, clean and prepare a chamber, coating its floor with goma. Paint an image of me and adorn it all around with various jeweled ornaments. Bathe, put on clean clothing, anoint the body with fine fragrances, and then enter the purified chamber.
“For my sake, that person should resolve three times every day to invoke the name of that buddha and the name of this sūtra and pay reverence to them, saying, ‘Homage to the Tathāgata Lapis-Lazuli Golden Mountain Jeweled Flower Shining Light Ocean of Auspicious Qualities!’ Then, with utmost sincerity, present various kinds of incense, flowers, and sweet food and drink. Use incense, flowers, food, and drink to honor my image as well. Take further food, scatter it in the other directions, and give it to the various deities and other beings. With truthful words invite the Goddess of Great Auspiciousness and make this vow: ‘If what has been said is indeed true and not false, do not let my invitation come to nothing.’
“At that time, the Goddess of Great Auspiciousness will learn of this, give rise to compassion, and cause the wealth and grain in that person’s household to increase. The person should then recite the formula to summon me, first invoking the names of the buddhas and bodhisattvas and reverently bowing to them with one-pointed mind.”
Invoking Every Buddha and Bodhisattva by Name
The following names preserve the exact graphs and full-width spaces of the base text without alteration:
After Bowing, Recite the Formula of Invitation
The Goddess of Great Auspiciousness said: “After bowing to these buddhas and bodhisattvas, the person should next recite the formula inviting me, the Goddess of Great Auspiciousness. Through the power of this formula, every matter sought will be accomplished.” She then proclaimed the dhāraṇī.
The following dhāraṇī preserves the base text’s Han transcription, full-width spaces, repeated syllables, variant and rare graphs, and interlinear notes exactly. It is neither translated nor altered:

Observe the Precepts for Seven Days and Nights, Purify the Body at Dawn, and Honor the Buddhas in the Late Afternoon
The Goddess of Great Auspiciousness again addressed the Buddha: “World-Honored One, if someone recites and upholds this divine formula in order to summon me, then when I hear the invitation I will go to that place and cause the person’s wish to be fulfilled.
“World-Honored One, these are phrases of consecration, phrases of certain accomplishment, phrases of truth, and phrases free of deception. This is impartial practice and, for all sentient beings, a right root of goodness.
“A person who receives, upholds, and recites this formula should observe the eight-precept discipline for seven days and seven nights. Each morning, first chew a tooth stick, wash the body clean, and rinse the mouth. In the late afternoon, honor all buddhas with incense and flowers and personally confess one’s offenses.
“That person should dedicate the merit and make vows for both self and all sentient beings, so that what is sought will swiftly be accomplished. Clean and prepare a chamber, or choose a secluded āraṇya. Make an altar with goma and burn sandalwood incense in offering. Place a splendid seat there, adorn it with banners and canopies, and arrange fine flowers throughout the altar. With utmost sincerity, recite and uphold the preceding formula, hoping that I will come.”
She Enters the Chamber, Speaks Truthfully in Dreams, and Fulfills What Is Sought
The Goddess of Great Auspiciousness said: “At that time, I will watch over and observe this person, enter the chamber, sit upon the seat, and receive the offering.
“From then onward, I will cause this person to see me in dreams. Whatever matter is sought, I will explain truthfully. Whether the person lives in a village, an empty marsh, or a place where the saṅgha dwells, I will bring every request to fulfillment. Gold, silver, wealth and jewels, cattle and sheep, grain and wheat, food and drink, and clothing will all be obtained as desired, bringing every kind of happiness.”
Return the Finest Share to the Three Jewels and Give Relief to the Poor Again and Again
The Goddess of Great Auspiciousness continued: “After obtaining such surpassing and wondrous results, take the finest share and offer it to the Three Jewels—the Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha—and also give a share to me. Hold extensive Dharma assemblies, set out many kinds of food and drink, and arrange incense and flowers. After making the offerings, exchange the offered goods for their value and use what is obtained to make further offerings.
“I will remain here throughout my life, protect this person, and ensure that there is no lack; everything sought will accord with the person’s wishes. That person should also give relief to the poor again and again, without stinginess or hoarding everything for personal use.
“The person should constantly read this sūtra and continue making offerings without interruption. The resulting merit should be universally given to all sentient beings and dedicated to awakening, with the vow to leave birth and death and swiftly attain liberation.”
Both Self and Others Receive Benefit
At that time, the World-Honored One praised the Goddess of Great Auspiciousness: “Excellent! Goddess of Great Auspiciousness, the way you circulate this sūtra is inconceivable and benefits both yourself and others.”
Why Does the Increase of Wealth Begin with a Single Purified Chamber?
The Goddess of Great Auspiciousness first describes her own dwelling. Outside the northern city Possessor of Wealth, in the garden Wondrous-Flower Merit Radiance, stands a splendid palace made of the seven treasures. She then turns from that jeweled palace to the petitioner’s own room. For one who seeks daily increase of the five grains and overflowing storehouses, the first act is not to reach out and take. It is to arouse reverence and faith, clean a room, coat its floor with goma, paint the goddess’s image, and adorn it with jeweled ornaments. The petitioner must also bathe, put on clean clothing, apply fragrance, and only then enter.
This turn matters. The scripture does not separate wealth from a person’s body, mind, and dwelling place. Although grain and storehouses are sought, the first actions concern faith, the body, and space: the mind is reverent, the body clean, and the chamber prepared. Before wealth and grain increase, the practitioner first makes the place where he stands fit for offering and reverence.
Three times daily he invokes the name of the buddha and the sūtra and bows to the Tathāgata Lapis-Lazuli Golden Mountain Jeweled Flower Shining Light Ocean of Auspicious Qualities. He sincerely presents incense, flowers, and sweet food and drink, makes offerings to the goddess’s image, then scatters additional food in every other direction and gives it to the deities. Only then does he invite the Goddess of Great Auspiciousness with truthful words and state his wish. The request is therefore no isolated demand: reverence and faith, purification, adornment, bowing, presentation, and giving have already preceded it.
Offering here moves both inward and outward. Inwardly, within the purified chamber, the practitioner invokes the names, bows, sincerely presents incense, flowers, food, and drink, and makes offerings to the image. Outwardly, he takes more food, scatters it in the other directions, and gives it to the deities. Before receiving any wealth or grain, he has already sent something from his own hand. The scripture thus places giving before the acquisition of wealth and makes the invitation stand upon truthful speech. One can neither remain within the decorated room alone nor press a request with false words.
First Bow to All Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, Then Recite the Formula of Invitation
When the goddess learns that someone has prepared according to the Dharma, she gives rise to compassion and causes the wealth and grain in that household to increase. But the text does not end there. The practitioner must first invoke all buddhas of the ten directions and three times, then bow individually to Buddha Jeweled Topknot, Buddha Stainless-Radiance Jeweled Banner, Buddha Golden-Banner Light, Buddha Treasury of a Hundred Golden Lights, Buddha Golden-Canopy Jewel Accumulation, Buddha Golden-Flower Light Banner, Buddha Great Lamp-Light, Buddha Great Jeweled Banner, Buddha Immovable in the east, Buddha Jeweled Banner in the south, Buddha Measureless Life in the west, and Buddha King of the Sound of the Heavenly Drum in the north. He then bows individually to the bodhisattvas Wonderful Banner, Golden Light, Golden Treasury, Constantly Weeping, Dharma-Supreme, and Well Established.
Not one name is omitted. This shows that the invocation does not bypass the buddhas and bodhisattvas in order to demand something directly. Only after bowing universally to them does the practitioner recite the formula that summons the Goddess of Great Auspiciousness. The scripture says only that through the formula’s power all matters sought will be accomplished. The dhāraṇī itself survives solely as a sound transcription, without syllable-by-syllable explanation.
The list begins with universal homage to all buddhas of the ten directions and three times, then names twelve buddhas individually, and finally names six bodhisattvas. The directions expand all around—east, south, west, and north—before returning to single-minded reverence. Invocation is not a prelude to be hurried past. Every name has its own place before the formula; the names and their order themselves form the road of reverence shown by the chapter.
Phrases of Accomplishment Also Form a Life of Upholding
The Goddess of Great Auspiciousness says that if someone recites and upholds the divine formula to summon her, she will hear the invitation, go to that place, and fulfill the wish. The scripture then praises this Dharma with six descriptions: phrases of consecration, phrases of certain accomplishment, phrases of truth, phrases free of deception, impartial practice, and a right root of goodness for all sentient beings. These six do not constrict accomplishment to one person’s private benefit; impartiality and all sentient beings are already named within them.
The practitioner must observe the eight-precept discipline for seven days and seven nights. At dawn, he first chews a tooth stick, washes his body clean, and rinses his mouth. In the late afternoon he honors all buddhas with incense and flowers and personally confesses his offenses. When making vows, he dedicates merit not only for himself but for all sentient beings, hoping that what is sought will swiftly be accomplished. Upholding thus includes discipline, bodily purification, honoring the buddhas, confessing offenses, and making vows universally for sentient beings. At this point, the scripture explicitly teaches dedication and vows for both oneself and all sentient beings.
Seven days and nights draw a momentary desire out into sustained practice. The morning acts are the tooth stick, washing, and rinsing; the late-afternoon acts are offering incense and flowers to the buddhas and confessing one’s offenses. The scripture assigns the acts to their respective times rather than blending them together. At dedication and vow-making, the scope expands from oneself to all sentient beings. What is sought may still be sought, but it must now be borne through discipline, purity, confession, and a shared vow.
An Empty Seat Awaits the Practitioner’s Own Utmost Sincerity as Well
The practitioner must again clean a room, or choose a secluded āraṇya, make an altar with goma, and burn sandalwood incense as an offering. A splendid seat is placed on the altar, adorned with banners and canopies, and surrounded by fine flowers. Then the practitioner recites and upholds the preceding formula with utmost sincerity, hoping that the goddess will come. Once the seat is ready, the practitioner’s work is to purify the place, prepare the offerings, and recite with utmost sincerity. Whether she comes depends upon the goddess hearing the invitation, watching over the person, and observing.
When the goddess comes, she enters the chamber, sits upon the seat, and receives the offering. From then onward, the practitioner sees her in dreams, and she truthfully explains whatever matter is sought. The scripture connects the dream with the preceding reverence and faith, discipline, offerings, repentance, dedication, and sincere recitation, and also with the goddess’s protective attention and truthful explanation.
Her response unfolds in distinct stages: first she watches over and observes; then she enters the chamber, takes her seat, and accepts the offering. Only afterward does she cause the practitioner to see her in a dream and truthfully explain the matter sought. Protection, appearance, acceptance of offerings, dream-vision, and truthful explanation each retain their own action. What the petitioner awaits is not merely the sight of an image but a truthful account of the matter sought.
When the Request Is Fulfilled, the Scripture Names Each Person, Place, and Good Clearly
The places protected by the goddess include villages, empty marshes, and saṅgha dwellings. The material supports brought to fulfillment are listed one by one as gold and silver, wealth and jewels, cattle and sheep, grain and wheat, food and drink, and clothing. They include both storable wealth and grain and the food and clothing that sustain daily life; they can arise in villages and extend to empty marshes and monastic dwellings. The text does not pass over them with one vague word for abundance, but lets every kind of place and material support appear in its own right.
Yet obtaining wealth is not the chapter’s endpoint. What determines where these resources go is the sequence of instructions that follows attainment. A reader who stops at gold, silver, wealth, and jewels will miss the chapter’s final and longest direction.
The Finest Share Is Not Retained but Sent Out Again
After obtaining the surpassing and wondrous result, the practitioner takes its finest share and offers it to the Three Jewels, gives a share to the Goddess of Great Auspiciousness, holds extensive Dharma assemblies, sets out food and drink, and arranges incense and flowers. After the offerings, the value of all the offered goods returns to further offering. What is obtained therefore does not close after a single accumulation but continues to circulate through offering.
The goddess promises to remain in that place throughout her life, protect the practitioner, eliminate lack, and bring every request into accord with his wishes. At the same time, she instructs him repeatedly to relieve the poor, not to be stingy, and especially not to keep resources only for himself. The two sides cannot be separated: one is protection and freedom from lack; the other is refusal to monopolize what one possesses. If wealth enters only oneself, the current established by the scripture is cut off. If it becomes offering, generosity, and relief of poverty, what is received continues outward along the course shown in this chapter.
Refusal to monopolize is not the final step. The practitioner must constantly read the sūtra, keep the making of offerings unbroken, universally give the resulting merit to all, dedicate it to awakening, vow to leave birth and death, and swiftly attain liberation. A wish that began with increasing grain and overflowing storehouses has now become universal giving and departure from birth and death. The benefit of material support is not denied, but is placed on the long road toward awakening and liberation.
The scripture lays out this entire sequence of verbs: offer to the Three Jewels, give to the goddess, hold extensive Dharma assemblies, make further offerings, relieve the poor, constantly read the sūtra, continue offerings without interruption, give universally to all, dedicate to awakening, vow to leave birth and death, and swiftly attain liberation. Each step sends what has been received toward its next destination. The use of wealth, the giving of merit, and release from birth and death become one continuously unfolding path at the chapter’s end.
Benefit to Self and Others Is the Buddha’s Final Seal upon the Chapter
The World-Honored One finally praises the Goddess of Great Auspiciousness for inconceivably circulating this sūtra and benefiting both herself and others. The preceding text instructs a practitioner to use what is obtained to honor the Three Jewels, relieve the poor, and give universally to all. What the World-Honored One praises at the close is the goddess’s circulation of the sūtra and its benefit to self and others. The agents differ, but the two actions follow one another.
The increase of wealth described here does not seal riches within one person and one room. It begins by purifying a room, passes through reverence, recitation, discipline, confession, and dedication, and after resources are obtained opens outward through offerings, relief of poverty, reading the sūtra, and universal giving. At first a chamber is cleaned. What is opened at the end, however, is the route by which material support travels from self to others.
Through the Eye of Consciousness-Only
What follows turns to a mirrored reading from Huizhao’s Commentary. These are judgments of an ancient master, not statements made by the scripture itself.
Huizhao first explains the chapter title: adding to what was formerly little is “increase,” while causing what was formerly absent to arise is “growth”; wealth is the seven precious things, while goods are the four requisites. He divides the entire chapter into four parts: the ritual for making a request, the benefit obtained through the request, instruction in the use of what is obtained, and the World-Honored One’s praise of its benefit. He also states explicitly that the textual order of repentance, reverence, offering, recitation of the formula, and laying out the seat is not the order of actual practice. According to practical rule he lists eleven items; according to the scripture’s narrative order he lists nine. The two sequences cannot be fused and passed off as the scripture’s own list.
For the six descriptions beginning with phrases of consecration, Huizhao explains each in turn: consecration signifies future reception of the station of buddhahood; certain accomplishment means that what is sought will decisively be fulfilled; truth means that what is said accords with the real; freedom from deception means not deceiving others; impartial practice is practicable by every sentient being; and the right root of goodness is the basis of worldly and supramundane good. All of these belong to what the mirror sees. Huizhao is explaining the six descriptions beginning with phrases of consecration, not the syllables of the dhāraṇī.
The commentary further judges that the eight-precept discipline is taught for the two lay communities. The scripture specifies offerings to the buddhas only in the late afternoon, while the commentary adds that the same is done in the morning. It also synthesizes the altar rite into five items: a secluded and pure place, a floor coated with goma, a painted image of the goddess, a high seat laid out, and banners and canopies hung while incense is burned and flowers scattered. At the point where what has been obtained is used, Huizhao first records that the scripture’s order is inverted, then explains exchanging the goods for their value as trading the remaining offerings for their worth and continuing to make offerings. Every such supplement and rearrangement remains in the mirror and is not presented as the direct speech of the scripture.
The same commentary preserves two answers concerning the difference between this chapter and the next. One says that the beings who give differ. A further transmitted answer says that this chapter principally concerns clothing and precious wealth and only secondarily food, whereas the next principally concerns food and secondarily the remaining goods. Both explanations are transmitted in the commentary.
Carrying Forward: What Is Obtained Leaves “I” and “Mine”
Zhiyi places merit at the head of the adornment of merit; Jizang says that although this chapter also gives food, its principal concern is wealth; and Zhili’s Record of the Words and Phrases fixes the direction of offering and reciting the esoteric words on the awakening of self and others, concluding that the wealth obtained leaves “I” and “mine.” The three masters comment on different recensions and divide the material differently. Their shared carrying forward nevertheless reveals that the chapter does not tell people to deny material support, but prevents such support from stopping at what is “mine,” so that it can become offering, poverty relief, propagation of the sūtra, and dedication.

This chapter begins with the Goddess of Great Auspiciousness stating where she dwells. It then sets out in detail the practices for those who seek wealth and grain: purifying a chamber, paying reverence, making offerings, reciting the formula, undertaking precepts, confessing offenses, making vows, and establishing an altar. It next relates the goddess’s response and the fulfillment of what is sought, and closes by directing the finest share of what is obtained back toward the Three Jewels, relief of the poor, reading the sūtra, and dedication. Huizhao’s Commentary serves as the exegetical mirror. Zhiyi and Jizang, commenting on the old recension, preserve the corresponding passage in the latter half of the Deity of Merit chapter. Zhili’s Record on the Words and Phrases of the Sūtra of Golden Light supplies a line-by-line record and is kept distinct in work and layer from his Record of Gleaned Notes on the Profound Meaning of the Sūtra of Golden Light, which explains only the Profound Meaning. The three recensions and the readings transmitted by the various masters are recorded without adjudicating.
I. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
| System | Placement and Division of This Chapter |
|---|---|
| Yijing T16n0665 | Fascicle eight, The Goddess of Great Auspiciousness Increases Wealth, Chapter Seventeen; chapter body 0439b05–0440a16. The next chapter, The Earth Deity Firm and Steadfast, begins at 0440a17. |
| Huizhao T39n1788 | The principal commentary begins with the chapter heading at 0309a06 and ends at 0310b20; 0310b21 already belongs to the next chapter. Occurrences of the chapter title in the fascicle’s opening contents are not the principal commentary on this chapter. |
| Zhiyi T39n1785 | Explanation of the Deity of Merit Chapter, 0076b17–b29. The extensive exposition within the third division, 「勸示行法,文中有略示廣示」—“exhorting and showing the method of practice; within the text there is a brief indication and an extensive indication” 〔0076b25–b26〕, together with the following three divisions, directly covers the latter half of the old recension. |
| Jizang T39n1787 | Commentary on the Deity of Merit chapter, 0168a20–b29; it comments line by line on the northern dwelling, cultivation of causes, the goddess’s coming, and attainment of the result. |
| Zhili T39n1786 | The Record on the Words and Phrases of the Sūtra of Golden Light heads the section 「第三、〈功德天品〉」—“Third: the Deity of Merit Chapter” at 0143a27. Its extensive exhortation and indication of the method of practice at 0143b21–c22 belongs to the line-by-line layer. |
| Zhili T39n1784 | The Record of Gleaned Notes on the Profound Meaning of the Sūtra of Golden Light contains only a general discussion of the class of chapters at 0014b18–b20. It belongs to the profound-meaning layer and supplies no line-by-line commentary on this chapter. |
Huizhao divides the chapter into four parts:
品文分四:一明請求之軌」—“The following explains the method of obtaining it. The chapter text is divided into four: first, explanation of the protocol for making a request” 〔T39n1788 0309a18〕
Using the three boundary phrases 我於爾時, 既得如是, and 爾時, he continues with benefit obtained through the request, instruction in how it is to be used, and the World-Honored One’s praise of its benefit. He further divides the beginning of the protocol for making a request as indicating the dwelling place, so that the object contemplated has a determinate location.
This is the commentator’s division, not a set of headings supplied by the sūtra itself. The chapter contains only 948 Han characters, so the present edition follows the scriptural sequence in its divisions and does not insert separate outline numbers.
Huizhao also states explicitly that the sequence shown in the sūtra is not identical to the sequence of actual performance:
—“Confession, reverence, offering, recitation of the formula, and laying out the seat do not stand in temporal order; each matter is explained separately. The sūtra marks and indicates the correct teaching, but states it as convenient rather than according to the order of practice” 〔T39n1788 0309b08〕
The chapter may therefore be read in its scriptural sequence, but the commentator’s rearrangement cannot be poured back into the sūtra as though the text itself had declared that order.
II. Alternate Translations · Collation of the Three Translations
Chapter Boundaries in the Three Recensions
This passage has a continuous correspondence in all three Chinese recensions. The two old recensions include it in the latter half of the Deity of Merit chapter, while Yijing’s recension first establishes it as an independent Chapter Seventeen. The primary difference is thus the handling of the chapter division, not the presence or absence of the content.
| Recension | Chapter Containing the Passage | Range of This Passage | Following Boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| T16n0663 | Latter half of fascicle two, Deity of Merit, Chapter Eight | 0345a28–0345c06 | The Earth Deity Firm and Steadfast, Chapter Nine, 0345c07 |
| T16n0664 | Latter half of fascicle six, Deity of Merit, Chapter Thirteen | 0388b01–0388c18 | The Earth Deity Firm and Steadfast, Chapter Fourteen, 0388c19 |
| T16n0665 | Fascicle eight, The Goddess of Great Auspiciousness Increases Wealth, Chapter Seventeen | 0439b05–0440a16 | The Earth Deity Firm and Steadfast, Chapter Eighteen, 0440a17 |
The continuous alignments of the three recensions are as follows:
| Alignment Unit | T663 | T664 | T665 | Differences Preserved |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| City, garden, and dwelling | 0345a28–b02 | 0388b01–b04 | 0439b05–b08 | The old 毘沙門 and Yijing’s 薜室羅末拏 both designate Vaiśravaṇa; Animanda corresponds to Possessor of Wealth (阿尼曼陀/有財); Merit-Flower Radiance corresponds to Wondrous-Flower Merit Radiance (功德華光/妙華福光); and a seven-jeweled golden pavilion corresponds to a seven-jeweled splendid palace. Each name and architectural description remains with its own recension. |
| The request and purification | 0345b02–b07 | 0388b05–b10 | 0439b08–b21 | The old recensions speak of increasing wealth and jewels and of sweeping, sprinkling, and purifying 〔T663 0345b03/T664 0388b05〕. Yijing details the five grains, storehouses, coating the floor with goma 〔0439b10〕, painting an image, and invoking the name three times daily. The old recensions name 「寶華琉璃世尊」—“the World-Honored One Jeweled-Flower Lapis Lazuli” 〔0345b04/0388b07〕; Yijing names 「琉璃金山寶花光照吉祥功德海如來」—“the Tathāgata Lapis-Lazuli Golden Mountain Jeweled Flower Shining Light Ocean of Auspicious Qualities” 〔0439b13〕. |
| Invoking the buddhas and bodhisattvas by name | 0345b28–c06 | 0388c11–c18 | 0439b22–c01 | The old recensions place the names after the formula; Yijing places them before it. Every name is aligned individually in the table below. |
| The formula and dhāraṇī | 0345b07–b13 | 0388b09–b26 | 0439c02–c12 | T664 preserves a second formula together with its transmitted interlinear note. Each recension retains the exact graphs of its own sound transcription. |
| Phrases beginning with consecration | 0345b14–b15 | 0388b27–b28 | 0439c13–c16 | The old recensions combine phrases of auspiciousness free of falsity, impartial practice, and roots of goodness among beings; Yijing lists six phrases. |
| Precepts, offerings, vows, and altar | 0345b15–b21 | 0388b28–c05 | 0439c16–0440a01 | All three have seven days and seven nights of the eight precepts, offerings to the buddhas, dedication, purification, and awaiting the goddess. Yijing additionally details dawn, late afternoon, the tooth stick, and confession of offenses. |
| The goddess comes in response | 0345b21–b23 | 0388c05–c07 | 0440a01–a03 | The old recensions say that within a single thought-moment she enters the chamber and sits upon the seat; Yijing says that she watches over and observes, enters the chamber, and receives the offering. |
| Fulfillment of what is sought | 0345b23–b25 | 0388c06–c09 | 0440a03–a07 | Villages, saṅgha dwellings, wealth and jewels, cattle and sheep, and grain correspond. Yijing also expressly records truthful disclosure in a dream. |
| Returning what is obtained through giving | 0345b25–b28 | 0388c09–c11 | 0440a07–a14 | All three contain returning through giving and lifelong protective attention. Yijing details the Three Jewels, relief of the poor, reading the sūtra, awakening, and liberation. |
| The Buddha’s praise at the close | None | None | 0440a15–a16 | Yijing closes with the Buddha’s praise of circulating the sūtra and benefiting self and others. |
The Original Characters of the Dhāraṇīs in the Two Old Recensions
T663 transmits one sound-form:
「波利富樓那遮利 三曼陀達舍尼羅佉 摩訶毘呵羅伽帝 三曼陀毘陀那伽帝 摩訶迦梨波帝 波婆禰 薩婆哆㖃 三曼陀 脩鉢梨富隷 阿夜那達摩帝 摩訶毘鼓畢帝 摩訶彌勒簸僧祇帝 醯帝簁三博祇悕帝 三曼陀阿咃 阿㝹婆羅尼」—the transmitted dhāraṇī sound sequence 〔T16n0663 0345b08〕
T664 first transmits one sound-form:
「婆梨富樓那遮利 三曼陀達舍尼 摩訶毘呵羅伽帝 三曼陀毘那伽帝 摩訶伽梨波帝 波娑彌 薩婆哆三曼陀 修鉢梨富隷 阿夜那達摩帝 摩訶毘鼓畢帝 摩訶彌勒簸僧祇帝 醯帝簁三博祇悕帝三曼陀阿咃 阿㝹娑羅尼」—the first transmitted dhāraṇī sound sequence 〔T16n0664 0388b11〕
It then preserves an interlinear note and a second sound-form:
—“[The following eight lines of the formula were newly translated. They are still spoken by the Deity of Merit, but differ from the old formula. It is not known which is right or wrong, so both are written out.] Homage to all buddhas of the three times; homage to all bodhisattvas; homage to Bodhisattva Maitreya and the others” 〔T16n0664 0388b17〕
「哆姪咃 波梨富樓那遮利 三曼陀達舍尼 摩訶毘呵羅伽帝 三曼陀毘陀那伽帝摩訶迦葉梨耶 波利波羅波禰薩婆利陀三曼多修鉢利帝 富隷那阿夜那達摩多摩訶俱畢帝 摩訶彌勒帝盧簸僧祇帝帝醯帝簁僧祇晞帝 三曼陀遏咃何㝹波羅尼 莎波呵」—the second transmitted dhāraṇī sound sequence 〔T16n0664 0388b20〕
The note itself preserves both formulas with the words “both are written out.” They are likewise reproduced here in full, recorded without adjudicating between their correctness and incorrectness and without imposing an unsupported restoration of their sounds.
Complete Table of Enumerable Original-Character Differences between T663 and T664
The following table compares the two continuously corresponding passages after punctuation and spaces are removed, grouping adjacent differences into word-blocks. All thirteen are listed. A difference of punctuation can be seen in the purification passage: T663 reads 「應淨掃灑洗浴其身,著鮮白衣妙香塗身,為我至心三稱彼佛寶華琉璃世尊名號,禮拜供養燒香散華;」—“one should sweep, sprinkle, and purify; bathe the body; put on fresh white clothing; anoint the body with fine fragrance; for my sake sincerely invoke three times the name of that buddha, the World-Honored One Jeweled-Flower Lapis Lazuli; bow, make offerings, burn incense, and scatter flowers” 〔0345b03–b05〕; T664 reads 「應淨掃灑、洗浴其身、著鮮白衣、妙香塗身,為我至心三稱彼佛寶華琉璃世尊名號,禮拜、供養、燒香、散華,」—“one should sweep, sprinkle, and purify; bathe the body; put on fresh white clothing; anoint the body with fine fragrance; for my sake sincerely invoke three times the name of that buddha, the World-Honored One Jeweled-Flower Lapis Lazuli; bow, make offerings, burn incense, and scatter flowers” 〔0388b05–b08〕. The lexical sequence is shared, while the pauses and sentence-ending punctuation differ; each recension retains its own punctuation.

T664’s second formula is an additional preservation with no counterpart in T663; it has already been reproduced in full together with its interlinear note in the preceding subsection.
Individual Alignment of the Names of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas
T663 and T664 have the same original characters in their lists, although their line locations are given separately. T665 adds a universal homage to all buddhas of the ten directions and three times and adds Bodhisattva Well Established; it also places the list before the formula. Their internal order differs as well: the two old recensions first list five bodhisattvas 〔T663 0345c03–c04/T664 0388c15–c16〕 and then the buddhas of the four directions 〔T663 0345c04–c06/T664 0388c16–c18〕, while Yijing first lists the buddhas of the four directions 〔0439b26–b27〕 and then six bodhisattvas 〔0439b28–0439c01〕. The table follows T665’s sequence for alignment and does not represent the original order of the old recensions.

The interlinear notes within the dhāraṇī likewise remain with their respective witnesses: T665 has 去聲,下皆同爾 and 入聲, while Huizhao’s citation has 去聲,下皆同 and 入. Punctuation also differs and is not supplied from one witness to complete the other.
III. Scriptural Grounds for the Consciousness-Only Meaning (the Point of the Eye)
Explanation of the Title and Alternative Explanations within the Same Commentary
Huizhao explains the title:
—“Adding to what was formerly little is called increase; causing what was formerly absent to be obtained is called growth. Wealth means the seven precious things, and goods mean the four requisites. If one can propagate the sūtra, the goddess can cause wealth and goods to increase and grow. This chapter explains that matter extensively and is therefore called The Goddess of Great Auspiciousness Increases Wealth” 〔T39n1788 0309a08〕
Asked how this chapter differs from the following chapter, the commentary first answers:
—“Because the beings able to give are different” 〔T39n1788 0309a12〕
It then also preserves another explanation transmitted from Tripiṭaka Master Paramārtha:
—“This chapter principally gives clothing, while precious wealth and food and drink are secondary; the following chapter principally gives food and drink, while the remaining goods are secondary” 〔T39n1788 0309a13〕
The first answer distinguishes the beings who give; the second distinguishes principal and secondary gifts. Both explanations are preserved without selecting one and discarding the other.
Eleven Items according to the Method of Practice and Nine according to the Text
Huizhao keeps the sequence of actual practice distinct from the sūtra’s narrative sequence:
—“The following, second, section directly teaches the method of practice. According to the method of performance, there are eleven items: first, one should initially be taught to recite the formula until it is mastered; second, establish the altar ground; third, adorn and purify the body; fourth, undertake the eight precepts; fifth, at the two times make offerings to the Three Jewels on behalf of oneself and the goddess, and oneself make offerings to the goddess; sixth, on behalf of the goddess and oneself, pay reverence to Buddha, Dharma, and Saṅgha at the three times; seventh, personally confess one’s faults; eighth, dedicate universally and make the wish for what is sought; ninth, before the goddess take refuge, pay reverence, and invoke the names; tenth, directly recite the divine formula; eleventh, hope that the goddess will fulfill the wish. The present text is not sequential. According to the text, it is divided into nine: first, reverence for the Three Jewels. This sūtra and Buddha Jeweled Flower should also be revered; because this was indicated earlier, it is omitted here. According to the preceding request for eloquence, one also revered the Three Jewels and requested all heavenly deities to bestow their aid. They are not requested here because increasing wealth is easy” 〔T39n1788 0309b27〕
The eleven belong to what is “according to the method of practice,” while the nine belong to what is “according to the text.” They cannot be fused into an eleven-item list supposedly enumerated by the sūtra itself.
Explanation of the Six Phrases
—“Fifth, praise of the formula’s function, in six parts. First, a phrase of the Dharma of consecration: it shows that this is the Dharma of an excellent person. As when one receives royal station, the state preceptor rides an elephant, takes water from the four seas, and consecrates the person’s head with auspicious grass, displaying an auspicious sign; this represents that one who hears this dhāraṇī will receive the station of buddhahood. Second, a phrase of certain accomplishment means that what is sought will decisively be fulfilled. Third, a phrase of truth means that what is said accords with the real. Fourth, freedom from deception means not deceiving others. Fifth, impartial practice means that all sentient beings can practice it. Sixth, a right root of goodness means the foundation of worldly and supramundane good” 〔T39n1788 0309c25〕
These six explanations are Huizhao’s judgments. They are not syllable-by-syllable translations of the sounds of the dhāraṇī.
Precepts, the Two Times, and the Altar Ground
Huizhao separately determines the community to which the eight-precept discipline applies:
—“The following, third, section teaches that precepts should be undertaken. This is stated according to the Dharma for the two lay communities; the five renunciant communities do not necessarily need to undertake them” 〔T39n1788 0310a04〕
The sūtra itself specifies offerings in the late afternoon; Huizhao adds:
—“The words ‘and in the late afternoon’ show that the same applies at dawn. The words ‘make offerings to the buddhas’ mean to the Buddha, Dharma, and bodhisattvas, together with the Goddess of Great Auspiciousness” 〔T39n1788 0310a09〕
His five items for the altar ground are:
—“The following, eighth, section teaches the establishment of the altar ground. The method for establishing it has five items: first, rely on a secluded and pure place; second, coat the ground with goma; third, paint the form of the Goddess of Great Auspiciousness; fourth, lay out a high seat for her; fifth, hang and arrange banners and canopies, burn incense, and scatter flowers” 〔T39n1788 0310a16〕
“The same applies at dawn” and the five-item synthesis of the altar ground are both the ancient master’s comprehensive interpretation. They cannot be passed off as the verbatim statements of this scriptural passage.
How What Is Obtained Is to Be Used
Huizhao first records the word order in the phrase concerning the finest share:
—“The wording here is inverted. It should say: one may use the finest share, on behalf of oneself and me, to hold extensive Dharma assemblies, set out many foods and drinks, arrange incense and flowers, and make offerings to the Three Jewels” 〔T39n1788 0310b05〕
He then explains exchanging the goods for their value:
—“The following, second, section says that one should exchange the remainder of the offerings and make further offerings” 〔T39n1788 0310b09〕
The commentary further divides the remaining use into six parts: offering the finest share, exchanging what remains and offering again, protection by the goddess, relief of the poor, direct propagation of this sūtra, and universal giving and dedication. This division directs acquired wealth back toward offering, propagation of the sūtra, and liberation, while the wording of the sūtra and the commentator’s rearrangement remain on separate levels.
IV. Explanations of Various Masters
Huizhao’s Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light, the Supreme King, T39n1788
The principal commentary on this chapter contains three approaches, four major divisions, three divisions of the protocol for making a request, three divisions of benefit obtained through the request, and six divisions of use. Its internal alternative explanations, eleven items and nine items, six phrases, determination concerning the precept communities, two times, altar ground, inverted wording, and exchange for value have all been preserved in Section III. Fascicle five bears the attribution 「翻經沙門慧沼撰」—“composed by the sūtra-translating śramaṇa Huizhao” 〔T39n1788 0286b13〕. The present chapter continues near the end of that same fascicle, at 0309a06–0310b20; apparent matches for its title in the opening contents of the fascicle are not used as the principal commentary.
Zhiyi’s Words and Phrases on the Sūtra of Golden Light, T39n1785
The chapter heading is 「釋功德天品」—“Explanation of the Deity of Merit Chapter” 〔T39n1785 0076b17〕. Zhiyi first explains generally:
—“This deity abides in the Dharma gate of the adornment of merit, which encompasses all dharmas; because merit stands foremost, she is called the Deity of Merit” 〔T39n1785 0076b18〕
He divides the whole chapter into six sections. Within the third, 「勸示行法,文中有略示廣示」—“exhorting and showing the method of practice; within the text there is a brief indication and an extensive indication” 〔0076b25–b26〕, the extensive indication unfolds from her constant dwelling place, Animanda, through invocation and offerings and the recitation and upholding of the divine formula 〔Zhili opens it into six at T39n1786 0143b21–b24〕, directly covering the corresponding passage of this chapter. The three sections “vowing to come and respond like a shadow,” “requiring shared practice,” and “separately indicating refuge and reverence” respectively connect with the old recension’s coming of the goddess, returning roots of goodness through giving, and reverential invocation of names. These are divisions in the Words and Phrases; they are not rewritten as items supposedly enumerated by Yijing’s text. The relevant fascicle bears the attributions 「隋天台智者大師說」—“spoken by the Great Tiantai Master Zhizhe of the Sui” 〔0073b04〕 and 「門人灌頂錄」—“recorded by his disciple Guanding” 〔0073b05〕.
Jizang’s Commentary on the Sūtra of Golden Light, T39n1787
Jizang explicitly states the principal and secondary gifts of this chapter:
—“This chapter also gives food and drink, but the giving of wealth and goods is principal” 〔T39n1787 0168a24〕
Concerning what is expressed by the divine formula, the commentary preserves four categories:
「神呪所詮凡有四種:一嘆諸佛功德、二說第一義諦、三明藥草、四唱鬼神名字」—“What a divine formula expresses is generally of four kinds: first, praise of the buddhas’ qualities; second, statement of ultimate truth; third, explanation of medicinal herbs; fourth, proclamation of the names of spirits” 〔T39n1787 0168b17〕
He determines that the present formula “should be the qualities of the buddhas,” and further explains consecration, auspiciousness free of falsity, impartial practice among sentient beings, and roots of goodness among them. His explanation is preserved alongside Huizhao’s interpretation of the six phrases, without using either commentary to adjudicate the other. The work bears the attribution 「沙門吉藏撰」—“composed by the śramaṇa Jizang” 〔T39n1787 0160a27〕.
Zhili’s Record on the Words and Phrases of the Sūtra of Golden Light, T39n1786
This work explains Zhiyi’s Words and Phrases and contains a line-by-line record of the passage corresponding to this chapter:
「第三、〈功德天品〉,二:初、釋題,二:」—“Third: the Deity of Merit Chapter, in two parts: first, explanation of the title; second—” 〔T39n1786 0143a27〕
It then opens six items within the extensive indication of the method of practice in the latter half of the old recension:
—“Exhorting and showing the method of practice, in two parts: first, brief exhortation and indication; second, extensive exhortation and indication. I privately open the latter into six: first, showing her constant dwelling place” 〔T39n1786 0143b21〕
Zhili translates Animanda as Possessor of Wealth, explains consecration as the water of dharma-nature consecrating the summit of the ten grounds, and expressly directs what is obtained toward awakening rather than the five desires:
—“Fifth, exhortation to dedicate toward awakening. This is the intention of presenting offerings and reciting the esoteric words as an invitation. If it were for oneself to enjoy the pleasures of the five desires and hope for wealth and jewels, that would be the karma of cyclic existence, reproached by the sages; how could the honored goddess protect it? Because the practice causes awakening to be accomplished for oneself and others, what is obtained does not become a cause of birth and death. One should practice the present method according to this passage” 〔T39n1786 0143c01〕
He also explains āraṇya in two senses:
—“Āraṇya here means free of contention: because its dwelling does not contend with the world, it is a place five li distant from a settlement. There is also a Dharma-āraṇya, meaning that all dharmas are originally pure; for that reason the place is called a Dharma-āraṇya, as in the opening of the Flower Garland Sūtra, at the Dharma site of awakening in an āraṇya. What the present sūtra indicates encompasses both” 〔T39n1786 0143c05〕
His discussion closes by leaving “I” and “mine”:
姊尚不著,妹豈能來?」—“The wealth obtained is free of ‘I’ and ‘mine.’ If the elder sister is not attached, how could the younger sister come?” 〔T39n1786 0143c19〕
The relevant fascicle bears the attribution 「宋四明沙門知禮述」—“set forth by the śramaṇa Zhili of Siming in the Song” 〔0138a12〕. This is the line-by-line layer of the Record on the Words and Phrases.
Zhili’s Record of Gleaned Notes on the Profound Meaning of the Sūtra of Golden Light, T39n1784
This work explains the Profound Meaning. Its relevant passage is only a general discussion:
—“The Earth Deity Firm and Steadfast, Great Eloquence, and Deity of Merit chapters each explain extensively within the chapter how those who practice the sūtra are benefited” 〔T39n1784 0014b18〕
It shows how Zhili gathers the three chapters at the profound-meaning layer, but supplies no line-by-line explanation of this chapter. The work bears the attribution 「宋四明沙門知禮述」—“set forth by the śramaṇa Zhili of Siming in the Song” 〔0012b05〕. T1784 and T1786 are two distinct works and two distinct layers of commentary; they are not conflated.
V. Terminology
| Term | Ground in the Ancient Transmission | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Increase / Growth | Huizhao: 「昔少有加多云增,先無令得稱長」—“adding to what was formerly little is called increase; causing what was formerly absent to be obtained is called growth” 〔T39n1788 0309a08〕 | Increase adds to what was little; growth causes what did not previously exist to arise. |
| Wealth / Goods | Huizhao: 「財謂七珍,物謂四事」—“wealth means the seven precious things, and goods mean the four requisites” 〔T39n1788 0309a09〕 | The seven precious things and four requisites are the commentator’s explanation of the title. |
薜室羅末拏 | The name of the heavenly king in the base recension 〔T16n0665 0439b05〕; the old recension has 毘沙門 〔T16n0663 0345a28〕 | Different translated forms for the same northern heavenly king are reproduced in their original characters. The English reader uses Vaiśravaṇa as an identification aid, not to replace either Han witness. |
| Animanda / Possessor of Wealth | The old recension names the city Animanda 〔T16n0663 0345a29〕; Yijing calls it Possessor of Wealth 〔T16n0665 0439b06〕; Zhili expressly records 「此云有財」—“here it means Possessor of Wealth” 〔T39n1786 0143b22〕 | Sound-transcription and translated meaning of the city name are preserved as alternate recensional forms. |
| Goma | The sūtra uses 瞿摩 for coating the floor and making the altar 〔T16n0665 0439b10/0439c21〕 | Neither this chapter nor the ancient commentaries used here establish a separate material definition at this locus. The transmitted name is therefore retained without adding an unsupported explanation. |
| Phrase of Consecration | The base recension lists it first among six phrases 〔T16n0665 0439c14〕; Huizhao takes royal consecration as representing future reception of the station of buddhahood 〔T39n1788 0309c25〕 | The scriptural name and commentary’s explanation remain distinct; this is not a word-by-word translation of the sounds of the formula. |
| Eight-Precept Discipline | The sūtra prescribes its observance for seven days and seven nights 〔T16n0665 0439c17〕; Huizhao limits this explanation to the two lay communities 〔T39n1788 0310a04〕 | The sūtra states the duration; the commentary determines the communities to which the prescription applies. |
| Finest Share | The sūtra directs that the finest share of what is obtained be offered to the Three Jewels and given to the goddess 〔T16n0665 0440a07〕 | It is the finest share of what has been obtained, not a portion kept solely for oneself. |
| Exchange It for Its Value | The scriptural phrase occurs at 0440a10; Huizhao explains it with 「應貿供養餘,更為供養」—“one should exchange the remainder of the offerings and make further offerings” 〔T39n1788 0310b09〕 | The remaining offerings are exchanged for their value and used to make offerings again. This follows the ancient master’s explanation without adding another procedure. |
| Āraṇya | The sūtra mentions it beside a purified chamber 〔T16n0665 0439c21〕; Zhili preserves both the meanings “free of contention” and “Dharma-āraṇya” 〔T39n1786 0143c05〕 | The sense of a dwelling place and the Dharma sense coexist in the ancient commentary. |
VI. Similes · Rhetoric
The chapter uses no explicit formula introducing a simile. Its narrative power chiefly arises from three arrangements—space, ritual, and return—together with a rhetoric of enumeration.
From city and garden to a single chamber. The goddess first names the northern city Possessor of Wealth, the garden Wondrous-Flower Merit Radiance, and the splendid seven-jeweled palace; she then brings the petitioner back to one purified chamber. The magnificent dwelling and an ordinary room reflect one another, locating the distant divine domain in the immediate place that can be purified.
From hearing the invitation to truthful disclosure in a dream. The sūtra first says that the goddess will 「即便護念觀察是人」—“immediately watch over and observe this person” 〔T16n0665 0440a02〕, then says that she is seen in a dream and truthfully explains the matter. Invisible protective attention joins with a remembered dream-disclosure, giving narrative transition to the fulfillment of what is sought.
From overflowing abundance to return through giving. The initial wish is for 「五穀日日增多、倉庫盈溢」—“the five grains to increase day after day and the storehouses to overflow” 〔T16n0665 0439b08〕, but the close directs what is obtained toward offerings to the Three Jewels, relief of the poor, universal giving, and dedication to awakening. Wealth is not an endpoint sealed within the storehouse; it becomes a medium of circulation from oneself to others.
Enumeration produces all-pervasiveness. Each honored name is invoked individually, each kind of offering is arranged separately, and the benefits name gold and silver, wealth and jewels, cattle and sheep, grain and wheat, food and drink, and clothing one by one. Rather than stating abstractly that everything is complete, the rhetoric leads the reader through each object of reverence, each practice, each thing obtained, and each thing given.
VII. Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward
Cross-reading with the preceding chapter. Chapter Sixteen already has the Goddess of Great Auspiciousness explain offerings, propagation of the sūtra, and the benefits of material support. This chapter develops those themes through the northern city and garden, the practice of invitation, and the use of what is obtained. Huizhao’s two explanations distinguishing this chapter from the following chapter have both been preserved in Section III; chapter order is not substituted for the ancient master’s original judgments.
Cross-reading with the following chapter. In all three recensions this passage closes immediately before The Earth Deity Firm and Steadfast. T665 establishes a separate Chapter Seventeen, while the two old recensions continue this passage within the Deity of Merit chapter. When the next chapter is read, each recension’s chapter boundary must remain intact; Yijing’s title is not retrojected into the old recensions.
Wisdom and merit support one another. Zhiyi says that merit stands foremost; Zhili further reads the wisdom of Great Eloquence and the merit of the Deity of Merit as mutually revealing, and closes with the wealth obtained leaving “I” and “mine.” This carrying forward does not deny the scriptural increase of wealth and grain. It returns the question of how what is obtained avoids congealing into “mine” to the direction of propagating the sūtra, awakening, and liberation.
Four exegetical routes. Huizhao divides the passage line by line according to Yijing’s recension. Zhiyi, Jizang, and Zhili’s Record on the Words and Phrases read the corresponding passage within the old Deity of Merit chapter. Zhili’s Record of Gleaned Notes gathers those who benefit practitioners of the sūtra only at the profound-meaning layer. Each route retains the recension and commentary layer it explains, recorded without adjudicating.
