心要Heart-Essence

Is hearing something only once enough reason to leave behind ten fascicles? If we refuse to transmit until we understand everything, much Dharma will disappear together with the people who heard it. If we call a single hearing complete, however, what is passed on is no longer what was heard.

Guanding stood between these two dangers. He traveled through Jianye, Jiangling, and the Tiantai Mountains, journeying back and forth for nearly ten thousand li, yet after joining the fragments together he had still heard the teaching only once. What he had not heard could no longer be heard, and what he had heard he had not fully understood. The teacher had passed away, so even a second or third opportunity to ask was impossible. Guanding did not hide these gaps; he wrote them before the ten fascicles.

For that very reason, the ten fascicles are not a certificate declaring, “I understand it all.” They are an undertaking born of being unable to bear that these words should be lost. One may write upon trees and stones, and speak in fields and villages; the shared boundary is a single one: transmit to those who have not heard, according to what one has heard and to the extent of one's ability.

What threatens transmission most is not necessarily incompleteness. More dangerous is using imagination to pretend to completeness. Guanding added reliable words from scriptures and treatises, set out the differing explanations of earlier masters, and plainly disclosed his own work of arrangement. What was heard, what was added, and what remained unheard each have their place. Only then does the writing cease to impersonate the teacher, and the recorder cease to hide behind him.

The heart-essence of these privately recorded origins is therefore a compassion shaped by restraint: do not let the Dharma disappear merely because one's own understanding is incomplete, and do not overstep what was heard in the urgency to save it. When this line is kept, the ten fascicles of writing truly become a gate of ambrosia.

Why must the lotus flower fall after it has opened? If the flower does not open, the lotus fruit cannot appear; if the flower never falls, people see only the flower.

The Buddha establishes various skillful means like a flower opening for the sake of the lotus fruit. Skillful means are not a needless detour, because sentient beings cannot yet enter the Wondrous Dharma directly; yet they are not the destination, because every path was always meant to reveal the real. Thus the flower opens: the provisional gate opens, and the true mark appears. The flower falls: attachment to skillful means is released, and the lotus fruit ripens.

The same lotus blossom also illuminates Origin and Trace. Buddhahood attained in the remote past is the Origin; leaving home and attaining the path in recent times is the Trace. The Trace descends from the Origin and is not a rootless illusion. At first, sentient beings see only the flower and think the Buddha has only now attained the path. When the flower unfolds and the lotus fruit appears, they see the Origin in the remote past. When the flower falls and the fruit ripens, the proximate Trace no longer obscures the original ground.

The six similes are therefore not six theories, but two aspects of a single movement of disclosure: in the teaching, the real is revealed through the provisional; in the Buddha's body, the Origin is revealed through the Trace. The conjured city can provide temporary rest, but it is not the treasure place. The grass hut can offer temporary lodging, but it is not the family estate. When skillful means have fulfilled their task, they are not cast aside in disgrace; they have delivered people to the place they always indicated.

The heart-essence of the lotus blossom is that neither opening nor falling can be omitted. If one wants only the flower and does not see the fruit, skillful means become an attachment. If one wants only the fruit and refuses to let the flower open, the real has no gate of entry. True wondrousness does not stand outside skillful means; it lets skillful means live for the sake of the real through establishment, opening, and relinquishment.

心要Heart-Essence

Why do people remain lost when the jewel is in their clothing and the road is not far? Because having does not mean knowing, and nearness does not mean recognizing the direction.

The drunken person already has a precious jewel fastened inside his clothing but is wholly unaware of it in the wine of ignorance. The lost traveler is not far from the treasure place but describes the nearby road as long. The private preface states the difficulty of sentient beings precisely: we not only seek outside for what we already have; by mistaking the direction, we also imagine an attainable place to be forever beyond reach.

The Buddha's compassion therefore does not stuff another jewel from outside into sentient beings, but awakens them. Nor does he move the treasure place closer; he enables them to see the road clearly. The four flowers and six quakings, transformation of the lands, emergence from the earth, opening the gate of skillful means, and showing the ground of the real all serve one purpose: universally enabling everyone to see and hear.

Nor is the sutra title a signboard hanging beside the road. “Wondrous” is the opening of the secret and profound treasury; “Dharma” is the showing of the correct tracks of the provisional and the real; “lotus” is the original fruit in the remote past; “flower” is gathering into nonduality; and “sutra” is accomplishing the Buddha's work through sound. Every graph of the name presents one aspect of how the Buddha awakens the deluded and points out the place of return.

In the end, the sutra is called the gate of ambrosia. The gate is not the principle to which one arrives, but it lets those who have not arrived enter. The jewel is not a possession to display, but it keeps one who has awakened from belittling oneself. The treasure place is not a fantasy in the distance, but it keeps the traveler from taking the conjured city as the destination. Awakening, discerning the road, and entering the gate are three mutually illuminating images.

標章Shared Explanation · Setting Out the Chapters

心要Heart-Essence

If one can recite explaining the name, discerning the substance, clarifying the purport, discussing the function, and classifying the teaching perfectly, yet recollection, faith, concentration, wisdom, and diligence do not arise, the five chapters remain only a table of contents.

Name shows where to begin. Substance keeps one from mistaking the signpost for the destination. Purport gives cause and fruit a single governing thread. Function keeps one’s own practice from ending in self-liberation alone. The characteristics of teaching keep the same words of Dharma from being forced upon every faculty. The five chapters do not cut the scripture into five pieces; through five indispensable questions, they allow the whole scripture to stand upright.

The lotus blossom reveals their relationship most clearly. The flower opens for the sake of the lotus fruit: skillful means are directed toward the real from the very beginning. The flower opens and the fruit appears: the real does not lie outside skillful means. The flower falls and the fruit ripens: what is released is attachment to skillful means. If one wants only the flower, one remains at the provisional gate. If one refuses to let the flower open, there is no path into the real.

Substance is likewise so. Ordinary people see only difference, people of the two vehicles see only thusness, and others seize a separate Middle beyond the two extremes. The Buddha’s vision is confined to no side. Emptiness is not annihilating nonexistence, existence does not leave emptiness, and the Middle does not stand outside emptiness and existence. The true mark pervades all things: the one inside filthy clothing is still the elder’s son, and the jewel inside the clothing remains a priceless treasure.

The purport is like the headrope of a net: cause gathers immeasurable wholesome qualities, and fruit gathers immeasurable virtues. Function is like drawing the royal ancestor’s bow to the full and then releasing an arrow through the many drums: illuminating principle pervasively is power, and discerning faculties pervasively is function. The characteristics of teaching are like sunlight, first illuminating the high mountains, then secluded valleys and level ground, until finally it shines everywhere, high and low. The sun is not partial; the vessels that receive it differ.

The heart of Setting Out the Chapters is therefore not the addition of more terms. It is to make the reader’s mind able to retain, trust, remain unconfused, discern, and practice. When the five gates truly open, what opens is not a set of headings on a page, but the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing.

引證Shared Explanation · Citing Evidence

心要Heart-Essence

If the beginning and end of a scripture were mere decoration, reading only them would of course not be enough. But when the introduction already foreshadows what the whole scripture will teach, and the dissemination gathers its central hinge after the teaching is complete, the two ends are like a flower’s first opening and its fruiting: they make the entire course between them visible.

From the auspicious sign once displayed by the Buddha Lamp Radiance, Mañjuśrī knows that the present Buddha will teach the Lotus. The scripture’s name, the true mark, cause and fruit, and cutting off doubt to give rise to faith shine forth in sequence within one set of verses; the characteristics of the teaching are separately revealed by the six similes that follow. As the teaching nears completion, the Tathāgata again gathers the entire scripture through all the Dharmas possessed, sovereign supernormal powers, the treasury of secrets and essentials, and exceedingly profound matters. The first illuminates the present through the past; the second gathers the beginning from the end.

The six similes—ocean, mountain, moon, sun, Brahmā King, and buddha—do not merely repeat “foremost” six times. The ocean reveals ten thousand streams returning together; the mountain, rising above all peaks; the moon, passing from waning to fullness; the sun, breaking darkness; the Brahmā King, sovereignty; and the Buddha, transformation carried to its ultimate. Only together do the six images give content to the supreme characteristics of the teaching.

The heart of citing evidence is not fulfilled by finding a few similar sentences. Genuine evidence asks which question a scriptural passage can bear: What name does it indicate? What substance does it reveal? What cause and fruit does it accomplish? What doubt does it break? Where does it stand among the teachings? Only when scripture and meaning correspond does faith cease to be borrowed.

生起Shared Explanation · How the Chapters Arise in Sequence

心要Heart-Essence

Why begin with a name if a name is not truth? Because a road sign is not the destination, yet keeps people from taking the wrong road.

Name indicates Dharma, and only by following the name can one recognize the substance. The substance must be realized through practice, and so there is the purport of cause and fruit. The fulfillment of one’s own practice then becomes the function of benefiting others. Since the methods of benefit are many, their sameness and difference must finally be distinguished through the characteristics of the teaching. The five chapters are not five blocks of knowledge but a path on which one chapter gives rise to the next.

From the Buddha’s side, Dharma is taught, sentient beings are awakened by supernormal power, the secret treasury is revealed, and the cause of practice and fruit of realization are established. From the practitioner’s side, one first hears the name, then investigates the principle, begins practice, removes delusion, benefits others, and finally distinguishes the teachings. It is the same road: from one end teaching descends, while from the other practice seeks upward.

The limit of a name is precisely its function. Knowing that a name is not the thing prevents attachment to names; knowing that without names Dharma cannot be revealed prevents contempt for hearing. Only by beginning with a limited name can one walk toward the true mark that no name can confine.

開合Shared Explanation · Opening and Combining

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

Why can a complete framework still keep opening? Because completeness is not closure, and a general name does not swallow detail.

The five chapters combine to explain one scripture. Opened, they can also be viewed through the five pairs phenomena and principle, teaching and practice, cause and fruit, self and other, and speech and silence. They can further operate one by one within the ten Dharmas path, consciousness, nature, prajñā, awakening, Great Vehicle, body, nirvāṇa, Three Jewels, and virtues.

The human-body simile is most direct. When one says “one body,” consciousness, life, and warmth are all within it. Viewed separately, each has its own function, while noble and lowly, worthy and foolish reveal further differences. The general body does not break apart because it is opened, and the parts do not disappear because they are combined.

The heart of opening and combining is the ability to combine without confusion and open without scattering. If grasping one side excludes the other, a structure becomes a prison. When general and particular illuminate each other, the five chapters become a living way of reading.

料簡Shared Explanation · Resolving Questions

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

If everything can mutually embrace everything else, are boundaries still needed? The more things can mutually embrace, the more necessary it becomes to know from which perspective one is speaking.

The flower represents the provisional, but not every provisional must be broken in the same way. When a skillful means for transforming others is grasped as ultimate, like remaining in the grass hut, its obstruction must be broken. The provisional within one’s own practice still opens for the sake of the real. Taking both cause and fruit as the purport likewise does not establish two purports: cause accomplishes fruit, and fruit is accomplished through cause; they are one mutually fulfilling path.

Purport and function can both speak of provisional and real, wisdom and severance, self and other, yet their boundary does not lie in their words. The purport asks through what cause and fruit one’s own practice reaches the Buddha-fruit. Function asks which Dharma can benefit another person now. Even if a skillful means for transforming others cannot reach the ultimate in one step, it has effective power when it properly fits that person’s faculties.

The heart of resolving questions is not to be deceived by identical wording or to sever relationships through distinction. The five meanings obtain what is shared because they can read all scriptures in common; each scripture retains its own answer and therefore does not lose what is separate. Communication with boundaries does not confuse; distinction with communication does not fragment.

觀心Shared Explanation · Contemplating the Mind

心要Heart-Essence

If you understand all the scripture’s meanings, how can you still possess nothing at all? Because however accurately you count another person’s treasures, the treasure is still not in your own hands.

The mind is like an illusory flame. Call it existent, and no form or substance can be found; call it nonexistent, and thoughts still arise. Contemplating the mind does not mean grasping a thing called mind. It brings name, substance, cause and fruit, transformation, and distinction into the present precisely where existence and nonexistence cannot be fixed.

Learning without contemplation is like having eyes in darkness but being unable to see, or like a poor person counting another’s treasures day and night. More words do not necessarily make the mind more ordered. Contemplation without learning easily claims as attained what has not been attained, like embracing a torch and burning oneself. The blind person and the lame person support each other, showing precisely that learning and wisdom on one side and contemplative practice on the other are both indispensable.

The six identities guard both sides at once. All are called “identity,” so that the Buddha path is not pushed forever beyond reach. Yet they are distinguished as identity in principle, identity in name, identity in contemplative practice, approximate identity, partial identity in realization, and ultimate identity, so that the first step is not passed off as the destination.

The heart-essence of contemplating the mind is not to close the door and believe one’s own mind. It is to let scriptural meaning test what is contemplated and to let what is contemplated realize scriptural meaning. Cultivating inwardly gains the wealth of Dharma; correct learning outwardly prevents overweening pride. Only when the eyes can see and the lamp can illuminate is there genuine vision.

會異Shared Explanation · Integrating Differences

Why can the same medicine not be given to everyone? Because illnesses differ, the flavors that can be taken differ, and the proper times for taking medicine differ. When Dharma does not fit the faculty, even good medicine can become a new attachment.

The worldly siddhānta first gives people a correct view of the world of causes and conditions. One knows, for example, that a cart exists through the combination of wheels, spokes, axle, and rims, neither grasping the cart as a fixed entity nor denying the usable cart before one’s eyes. The individually adapted siddhānta sees each person’s previous goodness and gives the Dharma that can genuinely produce goodness in that person. The counteractive siddhānta sees the illness and dispenses medicine; desire, anger, and delusion each have a corresponding treatment. The ultimate-meaning siddhānta brings language and the mind’s grasping to rest, yet can still use four gates to lead people to what cannot be expressed.

The four are not four sealed drawers. Any teaching can simultaneously have four aspects: establishing a world, nurturing wholesome roots, breaking unwholesome Dharmas, and enabling a person to awaken and enter; what differs is which aspect is primary at this moment. This applies to speaking and also to silence. For one weary of words, a sage’s silence can instead bring benefit. When a person’s faculties do not correspond, however much is said is like putting defiled food into a precious vessel.

“Attainment” and “use” must therefore be distinguished. Someone may have realized something personally yet not know how to liberate others. Someone who has not reached the other shore may be like an ill guide who prepares boats and rafts and sends others across first. Only the Buddha has perfected personal realization and perfectly knows when to speak, when to remain silent, and what to say to whom.

Opening the provisional to reveal the real likewise does not mean finally retaining only the ultimate meaning and discarding the worldly, individually adapted, and counteractive. The poor son must still be recognized again as a son, the great carts must still be given to the children, the jewel in the robe can still be exchanged for what is needed, and the good medicine must still counteract illness. What is opened is that none of the four skillful means remains separated from the wondrous; compassion’s skillful means do not thereby cease to function.

The heart-essence of Integrating Differences is to see one act of teaching through four pairs of eyes: to see differences of causes and conditions, to see this person’s wholesome roots, to see the illness present now, and to see the reality that language cannot possess. When all four eyes are open, the five chapters are no longer merely methods of explaining a scripture. They become the complete compassion with which the Buddha teaches sentient beings.

Explaining the Name · The First Three Topics and a Shared Explanation of Subtlety

Full five layers →
心要Heart-Essence

Are you chasing the clods, or the person throwing them? When someone keeps throwing clods, a dog runs after one and then another. A lion does not chase the clods; it turns back and goes straight for the person throwing them. With this image, Zhiyi asks whether we are chasing “coarse,” “wondrous,” “relational,” and “absolute” through words and names, or seeing the root from which distinctions arise.

At first, the wondrous can be revealed through comparison. Half and full, small and great, what carries skillful means and what directly reveals—when set against one another, their boundaries become clear. It is like ferries of which some go only to a river island while others reach the farther shore directly: the fact that they are all on the water does not erase their differences. This is the work of the relational: it does not flatten the teachings people actually receive or the roads they actually travel.

Yet if the wondrous must forever rely on something coarse to prove itself, it remains tethered to the coarse. Since there is no other Dharma outside the Dharma realm to serve as a comparison, whom could it still await as coarse, and against what could it be called wondrous? If even the “absolute” is grasped as a final thing, it becomes a new relational term. True absolute wondrousness releases not only the coarse but also the thought, “I have transcended the coarse.”

The shared and the specific follow the same principle. Teachings differ according to capacities, yet what is taught issues from the Buddha’s mouth. Gates of practice vary, yet what they accord with is nondual. Truth has many names, yet what they indicate is not thereby fragmented. Treatment within each division lets every road keep its own place; treatment across divisions keeps skillful means from being permanently sealed off once it has been opened. Clear distinctions prevent confusion; passage across them prevents separation.

This freedom from separation finally comes to rest in sentient beings, buddhas, and mind. Every realm has the ten suchnesses, and no realm is sealed within itself. Therefore, one cannot judge oneself or another to the end from a single present appearance of good or evil. Mind is like an illusionist, producing all kinds of bodies, minds, and lands day and night. Whichever realm the present thought belongs to, it is even now making that road more familiar.

The heart of the matter is not how many numbers one remembers but whether one turns back to look at the illusionist: What is the appearance of this thought? What nature is it forming through habituation? What is it doing? What is its cause, what conditions does it draw upon, and what fruit and recompense will it receive? To see cause and effect clearly without grasping them as fixed self-natures is precisely neither to flee distinctions nor to let distinctions pronounce a final sentence.

Thus “wondrous” is not merely praise meaning “highest.” It first teaches one to discern the roads as they are, then not to abide in any road; first to see where the clods come from, then to let the hand that throws them come to rest. When the water of mind grows clear, there is no need to finish chasing every clod in the world: words and thought naturally find a place to cease.

Do you see a snake, or a vine? In the half-light, a vine is mistaken for a snake. The fear is real, yet the snake was never born. Once the lamp is lit, there is no need to kill the snake; one need only see clearly that what lies before one was a vine all along.

The question asked by the subtlety of objects is precisely how we see the world before us. Ignorance and karma paint the six paths as an artist uses five colors to form myriad images. The twelve links of dependent origination renew this painting thought after thought, from ignorance through aging-and-death, like a wheel turning without cease. If one sees only successive arising and cessation, cause and effect are distinct. If one sees all things as illusory, arising and cessation have no fixed self-nature right where they occur. If one illuminates the still deeper ignorance and transformational birth-and-death, there remains something not yet exhausted even after release. If, within affliction, karma, and suffering themselves, one sees bodhi, liberation, and the Dharma-body, there is no need first to destroy this shore and then imagine another shore.

Thus coarseness and wondrousness do not divide the world into two halves; they lie in whether one takes the object shallowly or deeply. The elder gives the poor son vessels, rice, and flour, and the goods already belong to the son. Once father and son recognize one another, how could the household vessels still be called an outsider’s property? The Buddha first teaches skillful means according to faculties, not so that people will guard those skillful means forever, nor so that they will later despise them, but so that, when opened and revealed, they return to the family estate that was theirs all along.

The ten suchnesses, dependent origination, the Four Truths, the Two Truths, the Three Truths, the One Truth, and no truth are likewise different focal lengths of the same compassion. One person must first see clearly how suffering arises; another can see that illusory existence is immediately empty; another must enter through the two aspects of true and conventional; another can see all three perfectly interpenetrate. In the end, even “the one real” cannot be grasped, for once reality is seized as a sentence, true speech still turns into a new falsehood.

Why are there so many names? Because some sentient beings are mature and others are not. Teaching a profound Dharma too early may cause someone to slander it; failing to teach it when the time has come may cause someone to miss the moment. The Buddha is like a skillful painter, blending the depths and shades of five colors. The painting’s thousandfold differences do not mean that the Buddha faces many mutually conflicting truths; the same light is shining into different eyes.

The heart-essence of the subtlety of objects is not to select the “one correct” member of the six objects. It is to let each teaching complete its work of carrying sentient beings across without turning any teaching into a prison. When the vine is seen clearly, fear of the snake naturally ceases. Looking back, even that mistaken perception has become a road toward clarity.

Are you seeing the object, or only your own imagining? A person whose eyes are closed can still hear others describe colors. He may imagine them in fine detail and even argue fiercely with another person whose eyes are closed, yet imagination is ultimately not genuine seeing. The subtlety of wisdom first asks not how many terms you understand, but whether the film over your eyes has been removed.

Object and wisdom are not two things indifferent to one another. Only when a form appears does its shadow follow; only when a sound arises does its echo respond. Two mirrors facing one another each appear within the other. The earth brings forth a sprout, as an object brings forth wisdom; the sprout in turn brings forth earth, as wisdom illuminates its object. The object gives wisdom something to illuminate, and wisdom makes the object manifest clearly. If mind illuminates only its own preconceptions, however clever it may be, it remains affective consciousness.

The twenty wisdoms are therefore not a ranking but twenty renewed questions: What object does this wisdom condition? What delusion does it break? Is it only hearing, or direct seeing? Can it only deliver oneself, or can it know sentient beings’ illnesses and medicines? Within the same twelve links of dependent origination, one person sees the cycle of arising and ceasing; another sees illusory non-arising; another sees immeasurable differences; and another sees prajñā, liberation, and the Dharma body precisely within afflictions, karma, and suffering. The object has not changed, but the way of seeing has, and the world is no longer the same.

Coarse and wondrous are therefore not the permanent identities of two kinds of people. Coarse marks the limit while the eye has not yet opened and the object has not yet interfused; wondrous means that once skillful means are resolved, they are no longer separated from the real. Opening the coarse to reveal the wondrous does not gouge out the flesh eye and replace it with an unfamiliar pair of eyes. It makes the flesh eye, divine eye, wisdom eye, and Dharma eye all interfuse with the Buddha eye. Each retains its function, yet they are no longer sealed off from one another.

It is like a king visiting a lowly dwelling: the house is not moved, yet through his presence its dignity becomes manifest. It is like the hundred rivers entering the sea: their routes differ, but once they enter, all share the flavor of the sea. Genuine opening does not treat the roads traveled in the past as refuse, nor does it allow any path of skillful means to call itself the destination. It acknowledges depth and shallowness without turning them into separation.

Practice is the same. Warmth is like drilling wood when fire is about to arise. Summit is like standing on a mountain peak where one cannot remain long. Forbearance is like a distant traveler repeatedly exchanging cumbersome possessions for treasure that is easy to carry. The highest worldly Dharma opens the gate of the noble path in the final moment. No step may impersonate arrival, yet no step is futile. What matters is this: Is the present mind multiplying branches, or reducing its objects? Is it imagining through borrowed terms, or allowing contemplation actually to become wisdom?

The heart-essence of the subtlety of wisdom is not to treat wisdom as a beam of light standing outside truth. When the object interfuses, wisdom also interfuses; when the truths no longer obstruct one another, the illuminating mind no longer remains confined to a single frame. You still distinguish every road, every illness, and every medicine, but no longer use those distinctions to pass a final sentence on yourself or sentient beings. Seeing then is not possession of an answer. It is the return of every skillful means to the place where the eye can genuinely open.

心要Heart-Essence

Why might someone cultivate a hundred practices and still not have advanced a single step? Because however many practices one performs, without wisdom to show the way one may merely be busy in place. Eyes can see the road, but only feet can arrive; with eyes alone and no walking, what one sees does not become one’s life, while with feet alone and no seeing, the faster one walks, the farther one may stray from the road.

The subtlety of practice therefore does not first ask how much you have done. It first asks what wisdom guides each practice. One dharma can encompass all practices, and ten or a hundred dharmas can also encompass all practices. The key is not to lengthen the list without end, but to let discipline, concentration, wisdom, and compassion all advance toward the same reality. Wisdom is like a sharp needle and practice like a long thread: however long the thread, it still needs the needle to carry it through the cloth.

Discipline is like guarding a flotation bladder while crossing the sea, unwilling to yield even a strand of it. Concentration is like a cool pool amid burning affliction, bringing the agitated mind to rest. Wisdom is like discovering that the jewel has always been within one’s body and no longer staring only at the wound in grief. The three cannot replace one another, nor can they be sealed apart. True wondrous practice means that wisdom is not left behind when one keeps discipline, sentient beings are not forgotten when one enters concentration, and one remains willing to enter concrete cause and effect when one contemplates emptiness.

Compassion also keeps cultivation from facing upward alone. When an infant cries, its parents may first quiet it with a yellow willow leaf. The leaf is not real gold, yet it can become a slight condition for entering the path. When sentient beings are ill, a bodhisattva can also stoop down and share their illness, entering circumstances in which they can meet. Skillful means is not the endpoint, but if one refuses to reach out because it is not ultimate, reality becomes only a distant name.

Thus sequence and completeness are not enemies. Ordinary beings gravely afflicted by views and thought still need the step-by-step support of discipline, concentration, and wisdom, but no step need be sealed into an isolated stage. What the beginner contemplates and what is revealed at the ultimate are not two truths; they differ only in clarity and obscurity, depth and shallowness. When the destination is known, sequence does not postpone the ultimate; when one is willing to take every step, completeness does not collapse into a beautiful phrase.

The heart of the subtlety of practice is to let the Dharma one understands grow feet. Today, guard one thought with vigilance, face one object without grasping, and refuse to abandon compassion for one sentient being. So long as right wisdom leads, each small step can open into all practices. The wondrous does not lie in an astonishing deed, but in this step’s never leaving the reality one has seen.

Why does the same rain produce grasses and trees of different heights? Because the rain is impartial, yet the three grasses and two trees do not have the same capacity to receive it. The small grass, middle grass, superior grass, small tree, and great tree all grow from one ground and are moistened by one rain. The difference is not that there are five kinds of rain, but that sentient beings differ in the depth of their cultivated causes, wisdom, severance of delusion, and work for others.

The subtlety of stages first asks us to face honestly how far we have gone. Wholesome human and heavenly results mature from discipline, kindness, and many small acts of goodness. The seven worthy stages draw gradually from resembling understanding toward true illumination, and the seven noble stages pass from the path of seeing into the path of cultivation. Bodhisattvas seek not only personal realization but also fulfill sentient beings through vows, the six perfections, and supernormal powers. A stage is not a badge of status; it is the measure left by practice.

Yet that measure must not become a cage. The Shared Teaching’s ten grounds remain fully present, but persons of sharp faculties may move swiftly without stopping at every one. On a single ground, the two vehicles and bodhisattvas may contemplate the same thing while putting it to different uses. Bodhisattvas know that sentient beings are like empty space and still vow to liberate them all; they see principle and sever the bonds without hastening to appropriate realization. Separate names are established because compassion now functions differently. Although the names differ, the realization they indicate still belongs to the Shared Teaching.

Zhiyi therefore repeatedly uses questions and answers to loosen a rigid chart of stages. Masters differ in how they correlate the heights of grounds and fruits; one may infer their meaning but must not cling to a fixed allocation. Where the first flame falls depends on when a given faculty actually begins to sever delusion. Nor does freedom from fixed stages for the sharp-facultied mean that the road has disappeared. A map is meant to guide travelers, not lock them into boxes.

At the great-tree stage, scriptures and treatises present more numerous stages, subtler modes of suppression and severance, and broader Dharma gates. The greatest danger here is forcing every scriptural intention into one flattened chart. Counts of stages, levels of severance, and gates of practice answer three different questions and must be completed through mutually supporting scriptural meanings. To seize one side and dispute relative heights is like arguing about the sun without eyes.

The heart of the subtlety of stages therefore speaks in two sentences at once: do not skip over differences, and do not let differences divide you. First know truthfully your own faculties, practice, severance, and function; then remember that every grass and tree grows from the same ground and rain. See the stages clearly without conceit, and practice through them without reifying them. Only then are stages more than a hierarchy, and only then does practice pass through stages into the wondrous.

If suchness has no ladder, why does practice still have a beginning and an end? Because although the water of the ocean is one, there are still those who have just entered it, those who have reached its middle, and those who have arrived at the farther shore. Dharma-nature has no higher or lower, yet a practitioner’s ignorance may be subdued or unsubdued, wisdom may be bright or unbright, and the power to benefit others may be broad or narrow. Stages are not ranks carved into suchness; they are the depths disclosed by the actuality of cultivation and realization.

The perfect stages begin by protecting and nurturing the initial mind through the five grades. Rejoicing lets perfect faith take root; reading and recitation use the light of the teaching to aid the eye of contemplation; teaching the Dharma purifies oneself and others together; additionally practicing the six perfections lets merit in concrete affairs support principle; directly practicing the six perfections brings principle and affairs into mutual integration. At the ten faiths, understanding may already be exceedingly bright, yet it remains only analogous. Only when the first abode directly breaks one part of ignorance does analogous understanding turn into partial realization. This boundary prevents ardent faith from posing as realization, while also preventing those who have not yet entered realization from belittling the initial mind.

The moon simile is especially precise. The moon’s nature is always full, yet because of the mountain’s shadow it appears to wax and wane. The Dharma body neither increases nor decreases, yet because of ignorance prajñā is said to grow brighter and liberation to draw progressively free. It increases without increasing and decreases without decreasing: equality does not obstruct cultivation, and cultivation does not damage equality.

Stages arise for the sake of sentient beings and are also retired when conditions mature. Retirement does not mean that an earlier teaching was wholly wrong, still less that scripture is erased from the world. It means only that this person has benefited from the skillful means and need no longer take that skillful means as the endpoint. It may be retired for an earlier capacity while remaining for a later one. What truly must be relinquished is attachment to remaining at the former stage.

Opening the coarse to reveal the wondrous likewise does not mean abandoning what is before us to seek a higher world elsewhere. When the blossom opens, the lotus appears; apart from the blossom there is no other lotus. The minds of ordinary beings, practices of the six perfections, stages of the two vehicles, and even provisional bodhisattva stages can all be opened here and now to reveal the true mark, and they can also advance by increasing the path and diminishing birth-and-death. Opening decisively at one’s present stage and entering a higher stage are both indispensable.

Finally, the five grades proceed by the vehicle of teaching, the ten faiths advance by the vehicle of practice, and those at the first abode and above deepen by the vehicle of realization. At wondrous awakening, “abiding” does not mean possessing the highest position; it means that there is no higher dharma left to seek and no fixed abode left to guard.

The heart of the perfect stages is not to ask, “What is my rank?” It is to look back into every thought-moment: Is this mind brighter? Is attachment thinner? Is compassion broader? The ladder is only a skillful means. The true direction is continually to increase the path and diminish birth-and-death within the one Dharma realm, until one abides without abiding.

Where are the three tracks to buddhahood to be found? If true nature, contemplative illumination, and supporting accomplishment are imagined as three tools, one will ask which must first be obtained and which cultivated later. Yet if one says only that they are one, practice can easily be made to sound as though nothing need be done. The subtlety of the three dharmas releases both attachments at once: three are not fixed as three, and one is not fixed as one. True nature is what one relies upon, contemplative illumination is lucid seeing, and supporting accomplishment is the multitude of practices. The three are not confused with one another, yet they have never been separate.

Thus, the three tracks do not hide outside affliction, karma, and suffering. Ignorance is like ice and illumination like water; when ice melts, water is not fetched from somewhere else. Evil is like the potential for fire within bamboo: when conditions meet, fire arises and then burns the bamboo; good likewise takes concrete form from evil that can be transformed and turns back to break evil. The path of suffering is like mistaking south for north: although the direction is misapprehended, the true south has not disappeared. Practice does not flee to some other kind of material. It lets the very place of delusion be seen and opened through.

The simile of the great cart expresses this most completely. The Dharma-body is the body of the cart, while prajñā and liberation are its adornments and equipment. The tathāgata-garbha reveals the cart’s breadth, and the emptiness of ultimate meaning reveals its height. The great white ox is unstained, powerful, even in its gait, and swift as the wind. The body of the cart, its jeweled adornments, and the white ox together make one cart. They cannot be split into three carts, nor can their distinct functions be erased merely because one speaks of a single cart.

The three paths, three consciousnesses, three buddha-natures, three prajñās, three bodhis, three Great Vehicles, three bodies, three nirvāṇas, the Three Jewels in one substance, and three virtues may look like many different names, but they form one road from saṃsāra to the secret treasury. The names change according to those being taught: some first need to establish right understanding, some to make wholesome roots grow, some to counteract the illness of delusion, and some can enter ultimate meaning directly. A thousand carts can follow the same track; Dharma gates need not bear the same name.

The heart of the subtlety of the three dharmas is therefore not to discard coarse dharmas and exchange them for a new set of wondrous dharmas. The treasure has always been in the house, but the whole family did not know and so could not use it. Opening and revealing means clearing away the weeds so that the hidden gold appears. An ordinary person’s single thought already possesses the three dharmas; practice makes what was concealed become manifest. At the ultimate, they remain the same three dharmas, neither vertical nor horizontal. Seen from here, the “half wish-fulfilling jewel” does not mean that only half of truth has been obtained. It means that the cause and fruit of self-practice have been brought to completion, while the compassionate work of carrying sentient beings is about to unfold.

If no auspicious sign has been seen, does it still count as stimulus and response? Yes. What is visible before one’s eyes is only one form of stimulus and response.

Someone planted wholesome roots in the past and, before voicing any request in the present life, already receives benefit from the Buddha in secret. Someone’s past stimulus has matured, and in this life one suddenly encounters the Buddha and hears the Dharma. Someone now practices prostration and repentance diligently and sees an auspicious sign at once. Someone else labors throughout a lifetime without seeing any outward sign, yet wholesome roots are already growing in what remains hidden. Hidden stimulus and manifest stimulus, hidden response and manifest response, form four combinations precisely in order to separate “not seeing” from “there being no response.”

The real question is not whether the Buddha possesses kindness and compassion, but whether the stimulus has matured. The sick can all summon a physician, yet some recover and others do not recover for the time being. Lotus blossoms may already have grown, be just beginning to grow, or not yet have grown; all must meet sunlight before they can open. Sentient beings in whom good and evil are carried together always have some point from which growth can begin. Response may be near or distant, and benefit may likewise be manifest or hidden.

Stimulus and response are also not one side calling out and the other passively answering. Stimulus has the meanings subtle incipience, junction, and suitability: a wholesome root subtly begins to move, suffering and happiness stand in relation to kindness and compassion, and the Dharma needed in each case has its own suitability. Response has the meanings going forth, corresponding, and responding: the noble one goes forth to the stimulus, the two sides correspond, and then an appropriate Dharma removes suffering and gives happiness. It is like a crossbow that already possesses a trigger ready to be released: only when the archer pulls it does the arrow advance. Benefit is accomplished when conditions on both sides meet.

What, then, is supernormal power? It is not a display of the extraordinary. It enables going forth to a stimulus to become actual teaching through body, speech, and mind. The body of the King of Medicine Trees breaks evil, while the body of the king of wish-fulfilling jewels engenders good. The poison drum proclaims a Dharma that breaks evil, while the heavenly drum proclaims a Dharma that engenders good. Whatever body is manifested and whatever Dharma is taught are governed by the wheel of mind that knows the stimulus.

Intentional transformation is like laboriously drawing a picture; spontaneously going forth to a stimulus is like a bright mirror presenting an image. The mirror does not select the comely and reject the ugly: when a form comes, its image appears. The moon does not descend and the water does not rise, yet a hundred waters reflect the moon at the same time. Wondrousness lies not in the number of transformations or the distance illuminated, but in never losing sight of a single sentient being even though no private intention is involved.

The heart-essence of stimulus-and-response and supernormal power can therefore be gathered into one sentence: when nothing is seen, do not treat one’s practice lightly; when something is seen, do not cling greedily to auspicious signs. Ask only whether one’s good is coming into being and one’s evil is turning, and let every lowering of the head and raising of a hand become a stimulus to which response can go forth.

After the Dharma is taught, who becomes part of the Buddha’s family? Not the person standing nearest, but the person who truly lets the Dharma enter one’s life.

Dharmas originally cannot be confined within words, yet sentient beings must begin from what can be heard. The Buddha therefore neither reduces reality to a sentence nor keeps silent because reality transcends speech. Where conditions exist, he teaches; because faculties and conditions differ, the forms of teaching also differ. He may teach directly, repeat in verse, confer a prediction, or speak without being asked. He may begin from conditions, similes, former events, or former births; he may awaken people through marvels or untie their questions through discussion. The twelve divisions of scripture are not twelve drawers, but twelve movements through which compassion seeks an entrance.

One rain falling in different places may appear as water, fire, or weapons; the Buddha’s single sound, entering different minds, likewise yields different understandings. Its wondrousness does not lie in ornate speech, but in the sound’s capacity to reach each faculty while always leading beings toward the Buddha-path. Only when even those most difficult to turn can receive predictions does the finest physician truly transform poison into medicine.

Once teaching is received, the relationship changes. One who receives precepts activates the precepts because the teacher has spoken them; one who practices meditation attains concentration through instruction in settling the mind; one who studies wisdom opens understanding when a Dharma-gate enters the mind. Zhiyi compares this to a child receiving the body bequeathed by the parents and thereby forming one’s own body: Dharma is no longer speech heard from outside, but has become one’s own wisdom-life. Only through hearing, reflection, and cultivation does the name “buddha-child” acquire an inward body.

This also resolves a question: why do the Buddha’s assemblies include relatives and friends, but also enemies? Those who trusted and followed earnestly in former lives may now be close; those whose trust was slight may stand far away; those who rejected and slandered may meet the Dharma again as adversaries. Though the outward relationships differ, old connections can bring every one of them back before the Dharma. Some come through karma, some through vows, some by dividing their bodies through supernormal power, and Dharma-body bodhisattvas can come through responsive manifestation. Intimates, intermediates, and enemies can all become positions from which sentient beings are guided.

A child who has lost one’s senses after drinking poison remains the father’s child but refuses the medicine. The good physician does not deny their natural kinship; he continually changes his skillful means until the day the child takes the medicine. Retinues by nature means that all sentient beings are originally buddha-children. Retinues in phenomena explains how that natural relationship is disclosed through forming connections, maturation, and hearing the Dharma. The boundary between inner and outer retinues therefore lies not in a surname, but in whether Dharma has truly become one’s path.

Finally the whole family is gathered back into one mind: skillful means can be the father, wisdom the mother, Dharma-joy the wife, kindness the daughter, a wholesome mind the son, and the factors of the path good friends. If the mind is reared by ignorance, deluded love, and partial views, what grows is a retinue of afflictions. If one sees that love and views themselves are dependently arisen dharmas and contemplates them as immediately empty, provisional, and middle, that very mind can become the household of the Buddha-path.

The subtleties of teaching the Dharma and retinues stand together because Dharma never merely waits to be understood. It is to be heard, received, and lived as one’s own body—until the person who took oneself for hired labor recognizes oneself as the child. Only then does buddhavacana reach its home.

Why do grasses and trees grow differently when the same rain falls upon them? Although the rain falls equally, their roots, stems, branches, and leaves each have their own time of ripening. The Buddha’s manifestation, radiance, and teaching are like a great cloud, thunder and lightning, and universal rain. Only when sentient beings truly leave suffering, engender good, and awaken have the grasses and trees grown; only within this reception of benefit are retinues formed.

Benefit is not merely something newly acquired. The poison drum makes delusion die, while the heavenly drum makes good arise. On one side, the fires of hell are stilled and evil causes no longer continue; on the other, discipline, concentration, and wisdom mature and wisdom gradually becomes clear. If either side is missing, the turning of a life remains incomplete.

Benefit therefore begins with coolness amid the fruit of recompense and then returns to the causes made in a single thought. Hell beings, hungry ghosts, animals, asuras, and even the gods all have moments when former good can be activated. When greed, anger, and jealousy are taking shape in the mind, there is likewise a juncture at which evil can turn into good. Once suitability is activated, sentient beings’ wish to leave suffering and accomplish good meets the compassionate power that goes forth to their stimulus.

The seven benefits are like a picture of grasses and trees receiving moisture, while the ten benefits unfold that picture into a path: fruit, cause, śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, the six perfections, and onward to the Land of Expedient Means and the Land of Real Recompense. Although the first account already comprehensively treats the twenty-five modes of existence, delusion still has shallow and deep layers. As long as realization is not yet fully clear, benefit does not stop at the first level.

Distant benefit is also not merely one Dharma assembly in the remote past. Some awakened in their seats; some did not forget across another birth; some once lost their original mind and later met a good spiritual friend who caused former good to arise again. Distant causes and conditions mature time after time and can still become proximate benefit today. The earlier net and the later net each make a catch; no encounter with light or hearing of Dharma passes in vain.

Circulating the scripture keeps this rain falling. Dharma-body bodhisattvas, embodied bodhisattvas, and ordinary teachers each have their own reach; even an ill boatmaster can ready a boat and ferry others across. When those who teach Dharma bring benefit to others, the merit of transformation also returns to sustain them, increasing the path and diminishing birth. Circulation does not merely carry words into the next generation. It enables the next generation still to leave suffering, engender good, and enter the real through the Dharma itself.

Contemplation of mind gathers distant and proximate benefit back into the present. Mind arises through causes and conditions and is immediately empty, provisionally existent, and the middle. Inward contemplation loosens attachment, while teachers, teachings, scriptures, and the Buddha’s protective power provide outward conditions. A tree grows within itself while also receiving the bounty of sun, moon, wind, and rain. Only when inward seeking and outward protection stand together is benefit complete.

The heart-essence of meritorious benefit is to see whether the Buddha-Dharma is actually taking place within a life: whether suffering has been stilled, evil causes have turned, wholesome roots are growing, and wisdom is becoming clear—and whether what has been received can become rain for another person. Benefit to oneself is called merit; benefit to others is called benefit. The two directions join as one buddha affair that never passes in vain.

Did the Buddha before our eyes truly attain buddhahood only today? If one looks only at the attainment of the path beneath the bodhi tree, the answer seems to be yes. Yet the Lotus pushes time back to a remoteness that even the dust-mote simile cannot calculate: today’s attainment of the path is the Trace, while the first true attainment is the Origin.

This does not mean that what appears before us is false. When the moon is reflected in water, its light, cassia tree, and round disk are all clearly visible; precisely because people see the moon in the water, they know to raise their heads and seek the moon in the sky. The problem arises only when the reflection is taken to be the whole moon, for then one will never look upward. The potter’s offerings, the brahmin youth’s scattering of flowers, Treasure-Ocean’s vigor, and even today’s attainment of buddhahood while seated at the place of practice are all genuine traces of teaching and transformation. Yet because they occurred after buddhahood had already been attained in the remote past, they cannot replace the first cause and first fruit.

The ten subtleties therefore unfold from cause and fruit onward: once the fruit is accomplished, there must be a place in which it abides; abiding in a land, the Buddha illuminates the capacities of sentient beings; when those capacities stir, supernormal power and teaching the Dharma appear; those who receive the teaching and transformation become retinues; when conditions are exhausted, the Buddha proclaims nirvāṇa; only because extinction is manifested can the length of the lifespan be discussed; and what is accomplished from beginning to end culminates in benefit. The ten are not ten separate drawers, but the complete course through which a buddha-work of the remote past takes place.

Its most powerful image is a single cow producing the five flavors according to the grasses it eats. The five flavors are originally complete within the cow. Sentient beings’ capacities are like different ways of striking, and what the Buddha teaches consequently has different flavors. Difference does not mean that something was first lacking in the Buddha’s mind, nor that everyone ought to drink the same flavor at this very moment. It shows only how perfect wisdom becomes the Dharma that is genuinely effective for this particular person.

Proclaiming entry into extinction works in the same way. That it is not actual annihilation reveals the original quiescence of permanence; that extinction is nonetheless manifested serves to discipline sentient beings. If one speaks only of permanence and cancels the manifestation of extinction, compassion loses its form within the world. If one sees only the manifestation of extinction and judges it to be final annihilation, one mistakes a single episode of teaching and transformation for the Buddha’s entirety. “Not actual extinction” and “proclaiming extinction” must be seen together.

In the end, hundreds of thousands of branches and leaves all return to a single root. The attainments, teachings, and benefits of the intermediate period, today, and the future each have their own form, yet all issue from the single first Origin. The Origin is not another tree hidden behind the branches and leaves. It is the root by which every branch and leaf can grow and by which all are recognized as belonging to the same tree.

Contemplating the mind therefore does not reduce the remote past to an image within the mind. The subtlety of the Origin is not identical with the mind, yet neither is it apart from the mind. The suchness of the Buddha and the suchness of sentient beings are nondual; thus the buddha-work of the remote past is not merely a distant biography, but a direction in which the practitioner can vow to move: may I too deliver sentient beings through long life and teach the Dharma fearlessly at the place of practice.

The heart-essence of the ten subtleties of the Origin is to recognize the inexhaustible Origin from the visible Trace and then, carrying the Origin, to look again at every Trace. The reflection remains in the water, while the moon has been seen in the sky; when one thereafter looks again at the light on the water, one neither mistakes it nor needs to destroy it.

How can a single lotus seed contain an entire sutra? Because what it contains is not a collection of sentences, but a course from beginning to end.

The lotus blossom is first a Dharma-name. Because the Wondrous Dharma is pure and its cause and fruit are wondrous, it can in itself be called the lotus blossom. When sentient beings cannot immediately understand this, the familiar plant becomes a simile. The Dharma-name tells us that the subject is not merely a flower, while the name as simile gives profound Dharma a form that can be seen.

When the blossom is born, the lotus fruit is already present; when the blossom opens, the fruit appears; when the blossom falls, the fruit matures. These three movements show both how expedients lead people to see the real and how what appears before them enables them to recognize the remote Origin. The blossom is not simply discarded: it is precisely through the blossom’s nurture that the fruit matures. Nor does the fruit exist outside the blossom; it has been contained there from the first moment the blossom arose.

Look again at a stone-hard lotus seed buried in mud: black skin outside, white flesh within, the four subtle constituents forming its substance, a curled leaf about to emerge, and root, stalk, blossom, leaf, stamens, and receptacle all present in potential. It has not yet flowered, yet its power of growth, activity, cause, conditions, fruit, recompense, and identity from beginning to end are already complete. Practice begins here as well: purity does not first appear only after one has left the mud. Amid layer upon layer of enclosure, one first recognizes the power that can pierce the skin and grow upward.

After one seed ripens, it falls back into mud and water and grows into another plant. As a pond of lotuses ripens and grows again in this way, the passage of years eventually fills the whole pond. Buddha-work likewise does not end with a single attainment. Having realized the fruit, the Buddha still manifests arousing the mind, practicing, and reaching consummation for sentient beings; each ripened fruit in turn becomes the seed of a further work of benefit.

The ensuing explanation of “sutra” therefore does not suddenly leave the lotus behind. As the basis of Dharma, sutra gives teaching, practice, and principle a root. As subtle emergence, it lets the smallest beginning grow into a tree one can embrace. As a gushing spring, it lets one utterance flow into immeasurable meanings. As a carpenter’s line, it keeps the path from going astray. As a garland-thread, it prevents what is heard, practiced, and understood from falling apart. What the word “sutra” does resembles the lotus stalk, stamens, and receptacle: it supports, connects, and nourishes, making beginning and end into one whole.

In the end, even a single dot of black ink can be sutra. The difference of one stroke makes a different graph; from dots come graphs, from graphs sentences, from sentences fascicles, and from fascicles sections and collections. A single dot can occasion greed and anger or kindness and equanimity; it can disclose the dependent arising of cyclic existence and its cessation. Ink does not teach by itself. Rather, when eye, graph, and mind meet, the entire path of teaching, practice, and principle opens.

Contemplating the mind therefore does not put the scripture away. It reveals where reading a sutra actually occurs. Mind allows language to emerge, practice to be established, and principle to grow from faint to clear. Like a spring buried under earth and stones, mind can flow again when contemplation removes the blockage. The lotus contains fruit in the mud, written graphs contain meaning in ink, and a single thought amid affliction contains a path that can be followed.

The heart-essence of this passage lies in four words: “containing, and able to emerge.” When seeing a lotus seed, do not look only at how small it is now; see the full course of root, stalk, blossom, and fruit. When reading a graph, do not ask only what it means on the surface; let it become the starting point of hearing, reflection, and cultivation. If one can remain with this seed before one’s eyes and this dot of black ink, an entire sutra begins growing here.

What is it that truly lets someone enter and dwell in a house? Beams are important, and columns are important. Without beams and columns, a house cannot stand. Yet what truly lets someone walk in and dwell there is the space enclosed by those beams and columns, capable of receiving them.

Zhiyi uses this house to explain the sutra’s substance. Beams and columns represent cause and fruit; practice and attainment together constitute a sutra’s adornment. The true mark, however, is like the empty space within the house: it is neither a beam nor a column, has never departed from the house formed by beams and columns, and enables the whole house to receive.

Thus, the grandest name is not necessarily the substance. The One Vehicle can encompass many meanings, true truth can apply to many teachings, and cause and fruit can unfold into myriad wholesome deeds and qualities. All are important, yet one must still ask: upon what are they established, and to what do they jointly return?

The image of the ox cart makes the answer more precise. Prajñā is like the white ox, the five perfections like the cart’s adornments, skillful means like its attendants, and compassion like its carriage. The ox can draw, adornments complete the cart, and attendants and carriage each have their function; but what transports, what assists, and what serves as the basis cannot be conflated into one position.

Directly revealing the sutra’s substance means pointing out, amid these many functions, their common basis: the one seal of the true mark. It is not another seal stamped outside the true mark. Precisely because the true mark of all dharmas is the whole sutra’s destination, it has the confirming power to distinguish the Buddha’s teaching and prevent false teaching from being mixed into it.

The three tracks are therefore neither vertical nor horizontal, neither identical nor separate. Discerning the substance singles out true nature without abandoning contemplative illumination or supporting accomplishment, just as pointing to the interior space does not dismantle the beams and columns. What is singled out is the aspect sought by the present question.

Finally, every simile must return to the sutra. The Buddha emits light in order to reveal the true mark; he opens the gateway of skillful means in order to show the true mark; and he enables sentient beings to open the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing so that they may see this principle of the one reality.

The heart-essence of discerning the substance is not to reduce a sutra to an abstract answer. It is to recognize, amid myriad names and meanings, practices, and fruits, the common destination from which they have never departed. When beams and columns each occupy their place, there is space within the house; when cause and fruit each occupy their place, the one seal of the true mark becomes manifest.

What is hardest to distinguish is not the false, but what looks almost true. A fish eye can become mixed among bright pearls not because it has no luster at all, but precisely because it too is round and bright.

The same is true of what is called “real.” Bringing order to a country and household can be called real; leaving desire and attaining concentration can be called real; breaking through existence and nonexistence can be called real; realizing empty quiescence can also be called real. Every level has a genuine function, yet if one stops at what has been attained, that very genuineness can become an obscuration.

Zhiyi therefore presses the inquiry at every step. It may bring order to the human world, but can it leave attachment behind? It may break every view, but has it itself become another view? It may leave both existence and nonexistence, but has the nirvāṇa in which it abides become another extreme of nonexistence? It may enter empty quiescence, but can illumination arise from that quiescence and seek all the way to the bottom for the sake of sentient beings?

Three similes place the answer before our eyes.

Rabbit, horse, and elephant all enter the same river, but only the one with great strength reaches both the bottom and the far bank. A crystal jewel and a wish-fulfilling jewel look alike, but only the wish-fulfilling jewel is empty and yet can rain down treasures. The gold within yellow stone remains gold throughout: a fool throws it away, a merchant only stores it, a goldsmith fashions it into ornaments, and an immortal adept refines it into a golden elixir.

The river favors no animal; the jewel conceals its power from no particular person; and the gold does not change its nature in the hands of the four people. Depth lies in the capacity to see, to reach, and to use.

The final boundary therefore lies not in names and characteristics but in awakening. A blind person hears that milk is like rice flour, snow, a shell, and a crane, and so takes softness, coldness, hardness, and movement to be the color of milk. However much is heard, the true color has still not been seen. Only when a golden scalpel opens the eye and one, two, and three fingers are seen distinctly does what was heard become what is seen.

Broadly distinguishing the false does not teach us to hurry to judge others. It places every thought “I already understand” back into the river, before the jewels, and among stone and gold. Have I merely acquired the name, or have I truly seen? Have I merely come to rest, or can illumination still arise? Am I merely guarding the gold, or can I use it to bring sentient beings to accomplishment?

The true mark has never lost its brilliance because fish eyes are mixed among the pearls. What must truly be distinguished and removed is the mind that sees one glint and therefore ceases to look more deeply toward the bright pearl.

Discerning the Substance · One Dharma, Different Names

心要Heart-Essence

Are you safeguarding the Dharma, or only safeguarding a name? The same heavenly lord has a thousand names. If one rejoices on hearing Śakra Devānām Indra but becomes angry on hearing Śacī’s husband, or reveres Śakra while insulting Kauśika, both reverence and insult in fact fall upon the same heavenly lord.

Our attachments to the Dharma often work in just this way. Familiarity with wondrous existence makes us fear that ultimate emptiness negates us; familiarity with ultimate emptiness makes us draw all right principle toward ourselves and push false teachings onto others. A name was originally a gateway through which people could enter. Once grasped, it becomes a wall that opposing sides defend.

One Dharma having different names does not ask us to abandon discernment. Name, meaning, and substance must still be distinguished: the same name can return to a different substance, while different names and meanings can return to the same substance. What must truly be released is not difference, but the haste to decide what is true and what is false from words alone.

The four groups of similes make this plain. One person is named Goldsmith, can forge gold, and has a yellow body. One person is named Blue, can make lacquer, yet has a white body; another is named Black, can grind cinnabar, yet has a purple body. A hundred people can share a surname and name and understand the same skill while each retains a different body. The same person can also change names from place to place, pass through many offices, and master many skills without ever becoming someone else.

The last simile is closest to our daily experience. The same person may be called by different names at home, in the monastery, at work, and in study. Names change with relationships, and the responsibilities they reveal change with them, yet the person does not therefore shatter into many people. Different names can each truly have meaning without each establishing a separate substance.

When the Buddha teaches wondrous existence, ultimate emptiness, the tathāgata-garbha, and the Middle Way, he is likewise not creating four destinations outside the true mark. Sentient beings have different faculties: some must first become willing to listen, some must give rise to wholesomeness, some must cure an illness, and some enter awakening through that teaching. The teachings therefore differ, the names therefore differ, and the functions therefore differ, yet the principle with which they accord is ultimately not two.

The next time you hear an unfamiliar Dharma-name, then, you need not immediately pull it into your own camp or thrust it outside the gate. Ask first: why was this name established? What meaning does it reveal? What kind of faculty is it meant to lead, and where?

When we can listen in this way, different names no longer manufacture enemies. Wondrous existence need not fear ultimate emptiness, and ultimate emptiness need not reject the tathāgata-garbha. Each gateway preserves its own function while all point toward the indivisible one reality. Safeguarding the Dharma then changes from protecting one familiar name into ensuring that no responsive faculty loses its entrance because of our attachment to names.

Why can four gateways all lead to the true mark and still confine people? Because a gateway can give someone passage, and it can also be grasped.

The true mark is like a deep mountain beyond an impassable ravine; teaching and practice are the flying ladder. Without the ladder, there is no way to climb. Hold the ladder tightly against your chest, however, and you will never reach the summit. A gateway means something that gives access, not a new possession.

The four gateways are therefore also like four entrances to a cooling pool. Those of sharp and dull faculties, with concentrated or scattered minds, can all enter through a corresponding gateway. They are also like a great fire: if you do not reach out to grasp it, it can warm your body and cook your food; once you become attached, the fire of wrong views burns you instead. The question is never merely which gateway you choose, but whether walking through it turns the gateway into an attachment.

Teaching and practice are not two unrelated roads. Some people hear the Dharma and, like a swift horse seeing the shadow of a whip, enter the right road. Some cultivate contemplation and, like seeing lightning in the dark, see the road clearly. Many more must contemplate after hearing and hear again after contemplating. Teaching gives contemplation direction; contemplation lets what is heard become direct realization. Only through mutual support does the gateway truly open.

Yet knowing the direction is not the same as knowing how to walk. The treatise examines a road through ten matters: whether the object is seen correctly, the resolve genuinely aroused, concentration and wisdom harmonized, attachment pervasively broken, passage and obstruction clearly distinguished, the factors of the path and counteractives properly used, stages clearly known, obstructions endured, and finally attachment to virtues that accord with the path avoided. If even one link is missing, the finest gateway-name may become an obstruction.

The sweet and poisonous fruits make this point sharply. Nine parts poisonous fruit remain poison; one part sweet fruit remains sweet. A thousand pounds of layered blossoms do not equal one ounce of real gold. Practice does not prevail through many names or grand momentum, but through the actual accomplishment of each item.

This is also why four fingers can point at one moon. Sentient beings’ past cultivation, desires, suitability, and illnesses differ, so the Buddha draws them in through four gateways. There are not four moons, yet one cannot force all the fingers to disappear but one. When a gateway corresponds to faculties, it is wondrous; when it opposes them or is grasped, it becomes coarse.

The final opening and revelation therefore do not merely announce that one gateway is highest. They open affliction as bodhi, birth-and-death as nirvāṇa, and ordinary beings as wondrous persons. They also open the śrāvakas’ Dharma, teaching, practice, and principle, layer by layer, into reality. What is already wondrous needs no further opening. People, Dharmas, gateways, and principles not yet wondrous are where compassion must actually arrive.

The heart-essence of the gateway is thus simple: choose a road truly suited to you, walk it completely, and walk until you no longer grasp the road. Once the flying ladder crosses the ravine and the finger points to the moon, the gateway has completed its work.

When the name changes, does reality change with it? Within the Lotus Sutra, the sutra’s substance is sometimes called the true mark and sometimes the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing, the conditions of the great matter, the great cart, the family estate, the ground of wisdom, the real place, the jewel tied in the robe, the secret treasury, the universal gateway, or the root of virtue. Not only are the names numerous; the images are entirely different.

A path enables people to pass through, a vehicle carries them, a family estate enables buddha-work to be accomplished, and ground gives the myriad things a basis upon which to rely. The root text first lists the real place, then in explaining the name speaks of the place of treasure as the source of all dharmas. The precious jewel represented by the jewel tied in the robe is perfectly wondrous and difficult to conceive; a gateway enables entry, and a root enables dharmas to arise. These are not a set of synonyms that can be exchanged at will. Each name makes the same reality visible from a different direction.

This also resolves a doubt: if another scripture does not use the two graphs “true mark,” does it thereby lose the seal of reality? The treatise answers that true, wholesome, wondrous form, ultimate emptiness, the tathāgata-garbha, and the Middle Way, though differently named, can all be different names for the true mark. What matters is not that every scripture say the same sentence, but that its different names each lead to reality.

Yet even when all are called the true mark, differences in depth cannot be confused. The text therefore first distinguishes collateral and principal, name, meaning, and substance, and coarse and wondrous, and only afterward speaks of opening and revealing. Distinction first prevents an identical name from concealing different referents; opening afterward enables one to see that the hired laborer was originally the elder’s son and that the poor man originally had a precious jewel in his robe. Opening and revealing does not create another reality. It reveals that what had been held apart never departed from reality.

When the discussion reaches practice, the question becomes more immediate: once reality is known, is practice no longer necessary? The treatise answers with a cart. When vertical practice has substance, the cart has height; when horizontal practice has substance, the cart has breadth; only with height and breadth can it carry greatly. Without substance, phenomenal forms are only movements; without practice, substance has no way to become manifest. When the root is established, the path arises; when practice is actually traversed, its underlying basis becomes manifest.

Practice may resemble a long siege or a bitter assault within a fixed term; it may be constant walking, constant sitting, half walking and half sitting, or neither walking nor sitting. Methods and schedules may differ, but the question remains the same: does this practice correspond with the principle upon which it relies? Even such minute goodness as bowing the head, raising a hand, singing praise, or acting with a distracted mind can, through opening and revealing, be seen never to have departed from the Buddha-path.

Finally, the scriptural passage extends the view to all dharmas. What the Buddha has taught is like soil upon a fingernail, while what he has not taught is like the soil of the ten directions. Although what has not been taught is immeasurable, no fifth truth need be established; the Four Truths simply possess immeasurable characteristics. All worldly causes and fruits, wholesome and unwholesome, and all world-transcending causes and fruits are established in reliance upon the true mark.

The true mark’s pervasion of all things therefore does not paint every difference the same color. The underlying substance does not differ, while the dharmas that depend upon it remain coarse or wondrous; each name reveals its own meaning, each gate of practice has its own method, and each cause and fruit retains its position. The heart-essence of discerning the substance is precisely to recognize the one underlying basis amid a thousand differences, yet never to slight a single difference merely because the basis is the same.

明宗Clarifying the Purport

心要Heart-Essence

If the perfect principle has already been seen, why must one still proceed step by step? Because seeing the direction is not the same as completing the whole path: the principle seen can be perfect from the outset, while practice’s illuminating function must still be brought to completion gradually.

Clarifying the purport first compares the purport to the throat and collar, beams and columns, and a net’s governing cord. The throat and collar are the vital points of a body and a garment; beams and columns enable a house to stand; when the governing cord is lifted, all the meshes move. The purport does not establish another answer outside the true mark. It gathers up every cause and fruit of practice so that not one step departs from the substance upon which it relies.

The purport and the substance therefore cannot be declared identical, but neither can they be severed from one another. The substance is the true mark, which is neither cause nor fruit; the purport is the beginning and end of practice spoken of in reliance upon the true mark. It is like one piece of copper: the copper’s substance has no beginning or end, yet when one prepares to cast an image there is the image’s beginning, and when the finishing and polishing are complete there is the image’s completion. The beginning and end can truly be spoken of, without the copper’s substance thereby becoming something else.

The earlier part of the present sutra principally accomplishes the disciples’ real cause, while the latter part principally reveals the Buddha’s distant real fruit; the earlier part also has fruit, and the latter part also has cause. Only by viewing Origin and Trace together does cause retain its direction and fruit cease to be an eminence that has arisen without a cause.

More importantly, opening the coarse does not discard every road formerly traveled. Bowing the head, raising a hand, and the minute causes of scattered goodness can all be opened and resolved so that they together become wondrous causes. Skillful means once led people forward; after they mature, those means reveal the destination toward which they had always pointed. The wondrous is not outside the coarse: it appears when no cause or fruit remains cut off from the Buddha-path.

The moon simile illuminates this most clearly. The new moon’s outline is already round, while its light is not yet complete; from the second through the fourteenth day, its light gradually increases; on the fifteenth, outline and illuminating function are both complete. The moon itself undergoes no real waning or waxing, yet people distinguish waning and waxing according to its appearance. There are not two perfect principles within the true mark, yet practice still has what is not yet complete and what is ultimately complete.

Thus, “having seen the perfect principle” is not a reason to stop; it means that no further step loses its direction. The fruit of one stage can become the cause of the next. On the uninterrupted path one suppresses one part of ignorance; on the path of liberation one severs that one part. Cause and fruit continue without interruption while their basis remains unchanged: this is the heart-essence of the purport as the throat and collar of practice.

Can a scorched and ruined seed sprout again? If judged only by its present appearance, no. A scorched sprout and ruined seed fallen upon high, dry ground have no moisture and seem to possess no life. Those of the two vehicles regard themselves as already secure and already delivered, as though they had entered an endpoint from which no further step need be taken.

The function of the Lotus Sutra occurs precisely where renewed growth has been judged impossible.

The Buddha takes provisional and real wisdoms as his wondrous capacity, while the sutra takes severing doubt and giving rise to faith as its supreme function. Real wisdom enables one to see the one toward which all returns; provisional wisdom knows whether, at this moment, to teach one or three, whether to open or cover, whether to let a skillful means recede or bring it forth again for later faculties. They are not two separate systems of wisdom, but the orientation and responsive skill of one teaching.

Thus breaking the three first loosens attachment; abolishing the three keeps skillful means from being mistaken for an endpoint; opening the three reveals the reality originally present within the provisional; and gathering the three brings both the Dharma practiced and the practitioner into the Buddha-path. The Buddha abides in the one yet can teach the three; bodhisattvas appear to abide in the three yet can employ the one. When faculties subside, the provisional is covered; when faculties arise, it is used again. Skillful means is not discarded, but attachment no longer seals the road ahead.

The near Trace and the distant Origin are the same in this respect. The jeweled stūpa emerges, the emanation bodies gather, the bodhisattvas from beneath the earth appear, and Maitreya gives voice to his doubt: how could teaching of such vast scope have begun only a short time ago before their eyes? The question breaks open the shell of recent awakening and reveals buddhahood attained in the distant past. Yet the distant does not stand somewhere apart from the present. The Buddha still abides in a physical body and teaches; the power of the Origin benefits beings precisely through each manifestation of birth and cessation.

The rain of one flavor falls equally in the four directions, and beings are moistened according to their faculties; one voice teaches, and beings understand according to their kinds. That the twenty functions are finally gathered into the four siddhāntas means this: when the same Buddha-wisdom meets different desires, roots of goodness, afflictive attachments, and conditions for seeing principle, it becomes different entrances, yet every entrance moves toward severing doubt and giving rise to faith.

A hundred people surround a thief. All contribute the power of attack and encirclement, but the one who actually captures the thief receives the merit. Earlier teachings trained and matured the faculties; the present sutra completes the opening and revealing. The earlier work is not erased, and the point of completion is made equally clear.

The power of the Lotus, then, does not lie in handing someone a larger answer. It lies in enabling one who believes the journey has ended to hear, trust, and practice again. The lowly hired laborer inherits the family estate; high, dry ground receives the Buddha’s lotus; the scorched and ruined seed reveals the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing beneath the rain of the Wondrous Dharma. The true supreme function is that no being is forever sealed by an endpoint of their own making.

The Buddha already knows when you will be able to understand. The same Dharma may sound like a wall today and become a doorway ten years from now. What has changed is not necessarily the Dharma, but the person capable of receiving it.

The Fahua Xuanyi says that the Buddha did not wait until he sat beneath the tree of awakening to begin deciding who was suited to the great Dharma and who needed skillful means. The causes and conditions of the great matter, the praise of skillful means, and the teaching of the real after a long time all issue from Buddha-wisdom on the Dharma-body ground, quiescent yet constantly illuminating. He had long seen your faculties and the season in which they would mature.

Thus some can enter the Tathāgata’s wisdom from the outset. Others must begin like the impoverished son, with skillful means drawing near and urging them to work diligently. Some have already gained a lesser benefit but must still be rebuked and shown the jewel tied to their robe. Others must pass through cleansing before they can take charge of the goods and receive the family estate.

These are not mutually conflicting teachings, but one father’s unchanging recognition of the same child. When the child does not recognize his father, the father does not force the entire inheritance upon him. When their minds come to trust one another, the doorway opens another measure.

The calculator first sets down the figures one by one and finally gathers them into the great number. The Buddha first teaches distinctively according to faculties, giving each kind of faculty a corresponding teaching; finally, he gathers the three into the great, enabling people to know that every distinction unfolds from the One Buddha-Vehicle. Each distinction brings real benefit, while convergence reveals their common destination.

This also explains why the Buddha stopped three times and the assembly requested four times. Buddha-wisdom is too profound to be received through curiosity alone; a request for the Dharma must mature into a genuine readiness to hear. The stops reveal its difficulty, the requests reveal their resolve, and only the words “we wish and rejoice to hear” after permission is granted truly open the doorway.

The heart of the characteristics of the teaching is not to draw up a ranking of scriptures, but to see how the Buddha abandons no kind of faculty. The high mountains receiving light first does not mean that the valleys will never see the sun; skillful means coming first does not mean that anyone must remain within skillful means.

When you do not understand for a time, do not imagine that the Buddha has forgotten you. That doorway may not yet be fully open, but the light that sees you has never been interrupted.

If the Buddha teaches with only one sound, why do sentient beings hear three vehicles? The same sunlight first illumines the high mountains; the same teaching, received by different faculties, may likewise appear as different understandings. The difficulty of classifying the teaching begins precisely here.

Some classify along a timeline: first a teaching with marks, then one without marks, followed by common return and permanence. Some classify according to the meanings of scriptures and treatises: four schools are opened into five, or four into six. Others ask whether a scripture expressly teaches graded levels, the ten grounds, qualities, and characteristics of practice, and accordingly distinguish a Great Vehicle with marks from a Great Vehicle without marks. Each map answers the question: how does the Buddha’s lifelong teaching unfold?

The final view simply sets aside the four schools, five schools, six schools, two marks, and half and full, and establishes only the One Buddha-Vehicle and the one-sound teaching. The buddhas constantly practice the One Vehicle, yet sentient beings see three. Since difference is related to the hearer, the number of names for teachings alone cannot determine how many kinds of reality the Buddha taught.

Setting out divergent classifications therefore does not rush to choose one map. It lays out the three classifications of the South and seven of the North in full. Only by seeing clearly which scriptures each account places where, and by what principle each opens and combines them, can one genuinely proceed to challenge, accept, and reject. A practitioner reading here may also ask: am I grasping the One Vehicle practiced by the Buddha, or a map that appears according to my own kind?

明難Classifying the Teaching · Clarifying the Difficulties

Does sorting everything into neat categories necessarily mean that one has understood the scriptures? Not necessarily. If a timeline says that before the twelfth year there were only teachings with characteristics, while the scriptures had already clarified emptiness, or says that after the twelfth year there was only signlessness, while Prajñā still interconnects with buddha-nature, the Dharma-body, and permanence, its lines do not hold. If rebuke is reserved for a later period, Prajñā had already used fireflies and the sun, a great household and its laborers, images and footprints, to praise and censure different kinds of wisdom and the teachings people seek. The neater the names, the more scriptural meaning they may leave out.

Clarifying the Difficulties therefore does not rush to establish another set of names. It makes every old classification answer to its own criteria. If lifespan is used to judge permanence and impermanence, the birth-body and Dharma-body must be distinguished. If convergence and buddha-nature are used to order earlier and later teachings, one must face the Lotus teaching of the three bodies, three causes, and distant past. If scriptures are placed in sequence, one must explain why the Aṅgulimālīya and Vimalakīrti both rebuke and clarify permanence, yet are put inside and outside that sequence.

The five flavors themselves proceed in the generative order of milk, curds, raw ghee, refined ghee, and clarified essence. The problem begins when, to accommodate the five periods, a classification instead assigns the scripture’s Prajñā to the Lotus and changes emergence from Prajñā into Nirvāṇa to emergence from the Lotus into Nirvāṇa. The simile was never reversed; those who force the correspondence reverse its sequence.

The four, five, and six schools reveal the same difficulty. Illusion does not appear only in the Great Prajñā; the Dharma realm does not appear only in the Avataṃsaka; perfect interfusion does not appear only in the Mahāsaṃnipāta. The Nirvāṇa Sūtra, moreover, does not clarify permanence alone: it can employ both permanence and impermanence and fully possesses the paired operation. To take only one side as a school is like having one wheel or one wing: nothing can roll or fly. Adding another school-name does not restore the side that has been cut away.

The final single-voice teaching poses the sharpest problem. If the Buddha always teaches only the One Vehicle while the three vehicles are seen entirely by sentient beings themselves, sentient beings become those who transform, and the Buddha becomes the one transformed. Such an account has real wisdom but no provisional wisdom. It is like having one great cart without servants or skillful attendants: there is a direction toward the real, but no road by which different beings can be received and led.

The value of classifying the teaching therefore does not lie in arranging scriptures along a seamless line. It lies in seeing the real and skillful means at once: skillful means must not obscure the real, and the real must not erase skillful means. Only when the scriptural text is preserved whole can classification truly guide the way.

Classifying the Teaching · Examining in Detail What to Accept and Reject

An old map: is the error in its place-names, or in the way its routes were drawn? The place-names may all be genuine while the routes are wrong. Classifying the teaching is the same. Finding scriptural passages on the five flavors does not mean that fixing those flavors into five periods has grasped the scriptures’ intent. Being able to name teachings of marks, no marks, common return, and permanence does not mean that each name has been used comprehensively.

Examining in detail what to accept and reject does not begin by throwing the map away. It checks each point in turn. If the teaching of marks retains only one gateway, where have the other three gone? If the teaching without marks is equated only with the gateway of emptiness, where are the remaining gateways of shared and unshared prajñā to be placed? If one speaks only of reproaching the small and praising the great, do the partial and perfect, provisional and real, still remain outside the field of view? If one speaks only of the myriad wholesome practices returning to the One Vehicle, has their destination in permanently abiding buddha-nature truly been revealed?

The deepest illness is separating two aspects that originally require one another. Once the provisional and real pull apart, it is like parents separating: no guide can be born. To take only the reality of the one sound while losing the provisional is again like a widower and widow unable to share a household, with no descendants. Without skillful means, reality cannot be taught and revealed to sentient beings; without reality, skillful means loses the seal that confirms what it teaches.

Acceptance and rejection therefore do not mean deleting every old name. Once the illness is removed, the Dharma can still be used, but its manner of use has changed. The teaching of marks must fully employ four gateways, and the teaching without marks eight. Praise and reproach must take in small and great, partial and perfect, provisional and real. Permanence must employ permanence and impermanence together, like two birds ranging and resting side by side. Half and full are likewise not two static compartments, but stand in different relations of opening, breaking, carrying, and abolishing.

The old names can remain because they can still indicate a road. Their old meanings must change because one-sided acceptance seals off other roads. The heart of this detailed examination lies here: do not destroy every Dharma because a name has become diseased, and do not preserve the old miscorrespondence merely because the name can still be used.

True acceptance and rejection do more than decide what to retain and what to discard. They make every retained name capacious enough to hold the gateways it had omitted, so that provisional and real, marks and no marks, permanence and impermanence no longer go their separate ways. The name may be the same; the road is now wholly different.

Why can merely hearing the five precepts lead to profound awakening? Because what is heard today is not the only condition. The Great Vehicle true mark heard in the past has already been deeply planted in the mind, like poison first placed in milk. Encountering a corresponding voiced teaching in this life can activate that past seed and sever the bonds of delusion.

Milk changes into curds, raw ghee, refined ghee, and clarified essence, yet the poison is not lost. Some gain entry in the milk flavor, others in curds, and still others open the wisdom-eye only later. The five flavors reveal different locations; killing reveals the breaking of past delusion and entry at one’s present level.

Sudden, gradual, and indeterminate teaching thus extend throughout the same course of transformation. The sun first illuminating the high mountains is sudden. Scriptural teachings arising one after another and practices and stages advancing in sequence are gradual. A past seed suddenly maturing at any point within them is indeterminate. All three can be viewed through the teaching gate as how the Buddha teaches and through the contemplation gate as how people practice.

What is easiest to miss is that gradual-and-successive contemplation takes the perfect ultimate as its direction from the very first step. Beneath one’s feet, one may cultivate the twelve gates of dhyāna, Six Wondrous Gates, contemplation of the Four Truths, and bodhisattva practices one step at a time, yet the direction before one need not wait until the end to be established. The road has a sequence; its direction is understood from the initial arousal of mind.

The heart of classifying the teaching’s characteristics lies in seeing one course of transformation clearly: what was taught, who heard it, when past seeds matured, and how what was heard became contemplative practice.

Thus, although the general outline raises only three names, it already illuminates teaching and contemplation together. Know direct entry through the sudden while respecting every step of the gradual; know sudden opening within the indeterminate without mistaking it for an event without causes. Read in this way, differences no longer obstruct one another but together reveal how the Buddha-Dharma responds to capacities and enters the mind.

If the Lotus and Nirvāṇa are both clarified essence, why are some gathered earlier and others later? Because what the Buddha intends to give is not twofold, while sentient beings do not mature at the same time.

When the Buddha first sat at the place of the path, the wisdom he had attained was subtle, wondrous, and foremost, and he originally intended to enable sentient beings to enter the Tathāgata’s wisdom directly. Only after seeing that their faculties were dull did he recall the skillful means of past buddhas and distinctly teach the Three Vehicles within the path of the One Vehicle. The sudden teaching does not attend only to the high mountains, and the gradual does not abandon the great Dharma. The sun first illuminating the high mountains does not mean that the great earth will forever lack light; milk first becoming curds does not mean that milk itself is at fault.

The same initial sudden teaching can therefore be called both milk and clarified essence. Viewed from its being the beginning of the teaching and the practitioner’s first steps, it is like milk. Viewed from those of great faculties immediately breaking ignorance and attaining the forbearance of non-arising, it is like clarified essence. The question is not only “What teaching is this?” but also “Who is receiving it, and how far have they gone?”

The “Faith and Understanding” chapter presents this path as father and son recognizing one another. At first the poor son sees his father and flees; later he is hired to clear away dung. Afterward he can freely enter and leave and manage the storehouses. Only at the end, before the relatives, does he learn that he has always been the son and that the whole family estate properly belongs to him. The father has not changed and the estate has not changed; what changes is the son’s capacity to bear the estate.

A farming family is the same. What is sown first ripens and is harvested first; what is sown later ripens and is harvested later. Some receive predictions and see the Tathāgata-nature in the Lotus. Others are not yet mature then and still must be tempered through Prajñā before being gathered in through the Nirvāṇa. The Lotus and Nirvāṇa both being clarified essence does not mean that everyone must mature at the same moment.

This is the heart-essence of using the three passages as evidence: skillful means does not leave reality to create another road. It gives those unable to walk onward now a road they can still travel. The Buddha does not cease transforming because an earlier batch has already matured, nor does he lower the destination because a later batch is not yet mature. He preserves a continuing road of transformation for faculties not yet mature, so that milk can become curds, refined ghee can become clarified essence, and the poor son has a road home.

Why is skillful means still worthy of praise if it must finally be set aside? Because those of dull faculties who require training and maturation cannot receive full words from the outset. Before recognizing the family estate, they first receive instruction as hired laborers; as their faculties gradually mature, they proceed from receiving instruction to being entrusted with the wealth, and from skillful means to opening the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing.

The five flavors show how this path advances, while half and full show the provisional and real within each step. To look only at the five flavors is easily to see only the skillful means that arranges the sequence; to look only at half and full is easily to see only the reality to which the sequence finally returns. Only when the two mutually accomplish one another are they like a bird with two wings, enabling the provisional and real to range together and advance and withdrawal each to find their proper place.

The Avataṃsaka is full alone, and the Tripiṭaka is half alone; Vaipulya sets half and full against one another, the Great Prajñā carries the half while discussing the full, and the Lotus abolishes the half to clarify the full. Half and full are thus, in turn, full alone, half alone, set against one another, the half carried, and finally the half abolished to clarify the full; skillful means completes its work step by step according to faculties.

Therefore, abolishing the half does not mean denying it. Without the skillful means of half-words training and maturing those of dull faculties, there would be no opening of the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing through full words. When the half’s work is accomplished, the unsurpassed cluster of jewels comes unsought and the practitioner abides in real wisdom; the Tathāgata earnestly praises skillful means precisely because it can bring people to the full.

Why has the person not corresponded when the Dharma already has? Because understanding a principle does not necessarily mean that one has entrusted oneself to that path.

Vaipulya presents half and full together. Those receiving the half have already heard the full, yet they still remain within an inferior state of mind like a grass hut. Prajñā goes further: it commands them to take charge of the family estate and explains that all the half-word Dharma-gates can pass into the Mahāyāna. Yet the poor son still does not desire to take even one meal’s worth. The Dharma has been placed in his hands, but the person has not recognized it as his own home.

Upon reaching the Lotus, the conjured city is no longer taken as ultimate. The practices of the past are revealed as themselves the bodhisattva path, and father and child finally recognize one another. Correspondence of the Dharma and correspondence of the person are completed in the same place, and so both person and Dharma are said to correspond.

Yet compassion does not cease after one convergence. Some have already awakened secretly, some attain entry wherever they are, some must reach the Lotus before they will believe deeply, and some who withdraw from the assembly must still be guided again in Nirvāṇa. The gateway of skillful means opens again and again, not because reality changes but because sentient beings reach its threshold at different times.

Clarifying correspondence and non-correspondence therefore does not ask which scripture surpasses which. It asks: when the Dharma is already before my eyes, do I still leave myself in the grass hut, the conjured city, or outside the gate? Or do I genuinely know that what I practice is the bodhisattva path and recognize the kinship of father and child?

Why is the most valuable medicine not necessarily the most useful at this moment? Because medicine has its value, a patient has particular needs, and taking medicine has its proper time. A valuable medicine that does not correspond to the illness brings no benefit when taken; an inexpensive medicine that does correspond can enable a person to turn from ordinary to noble. This does not make the inexpensive medicine superior. It shows that the good physician truly sees the person before him.

The Buddha’s prescription possesses twelve medicines, three of them especially valuable. Sharp-witted bodhisattvas can take them all, while the grave illness of the Two Vehicles calls for contraction to nine. Complete and contracted use come from the same good physician. The difference is not that one prescription is true and the other false, but how it must be used to cure. Milk and curds here express only sequence through successive arising; they do not rank teachings by richness or thinness.

The five flavors also fall upon a person’s maturation. Unchanged views and thoughts are like milk, severing delusion like curds, being rebuked and subdued like raw ghee, receiving and recognizing Dharma like refined ghee, and breaking ignorance and opening the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing like clarified essence. The teaching does not change its substance with the person, but a person’s mind can mature. The same Avataṃsaka is therefore milk for lesser faculties and clarified essence for great faculties.

Some are like a cow eating the Forbearance herb on Snow Mountain and obtain clarified essence in one flavor. Some are like milk successively producing curds, raw ghee, refined ghee, and clarified essence and must traverse the whole course. Others are like poison placed in milk, whose power pervades all five flavors, and gain entry at the second, third, or fourth flavor. Direct attainment, gradual maturation, and entry midway are all real pathways of capacities.

Even the periods of teaching must be viewed in this way. The rising sun first illuminates the high mountains, and its afterglow still shines on the lofty ridges as it sets. One meaning may be stated explicitly at a particular time and still extend through beginning and end. The specific lets us see what was taught then; the shared lets us see that meaning is not cut off by a period.

The heart of resolving questions is to stop measuring everyone with one ruler. See how profound a Dharma is, and also how much this person can receive. See the fixed limits of a teaching, and also how its meaning extends. See clarified essence as upright and solely one, and also see sentient beings mature through one flavor, five flavors, or two, three, and four flavors. True completeness does not mean handing over everything on every occasion. It means abandoning none of the possible ways of entry.

If there is only one Vehicle, why open so many teaching-gates? Because sentient beings do not all have the same faculties. If the most complete teaching is not something a person can hear and enter now, it is not yet a path that person can walk. The Buddha therefore opens the Distinct, Shared, and Tripiṭaka teachings from the Perfect One Vehicle and, when necessary, further opens the śrāvaka and pratyekabuddha teachings, enabling people first to sever the bonds, realize the fruit, rest, and mature where they can understand.

This is opening. Opening does not depart from the One Vehicle; it gives the One Vehicle many gateways through which one can enter. Milk that has not yet matured cannot immediately be called clarified essence. It first turns into curds, then raw ghee and refined ghee. Each earlier transformation is a real benefit, yet it is not the final destination. Only when one turns and enters the Perfect One Vehicle, like refined ghee becoming clarified essence, does one return from one to one.

There is therefore also combining. The Two Vehicles enable people to rest; once they are known to have rested, the conjured city can be removed. When the mind gradually becomes open and at ease, it is further washed and refined through Prajñā and thereby tempered and matured. Once skillful means has completed its work, one must still return to the Perfect and real One Vehicle. Combining does not deny the path already traveled; it enables that path to complete the direction in which it was meant to lead.

Counting from one through eight only unfolds this process from different angles. Half and full, the skillful teaching of three, the Four Teachings and four gateways, the five flavors, and the discussions through seven and eight Dharmas all answer the same question: how does the Buddha make the Dharma accessible to different people, and once their faculties mature, how does he keep them from remaining in skillful means?

The Origin Gate carries this compassion still deeper. The Buddha can display his own body or another body and teach his own Dharma or another Dharma, manifesting various forms and teaching various paths. Although the forms and Dharmas are many, all are for liberation, and their destination remains the One Vehicle.

The heart-essence of explaining the teaching through increasing numbers does not lie in memorizing the names from one through eight. It lies in seeing the breathing of the teaching: from one to many, compassion bends down to meet people; from many back to one, no skillful means is allowed to conceal the Buddha path. Gateways can be immeasurable, but the direction to which they return is never two.

Can the Buddha’s teaching be arranged as a curriculum by year? If, after twelve years, there are still people who need to hear the Four Truths, dependent arising, and the six perfections, does the Buddha teach them or not? If He teaches, the Dharma crosses the assigned deadline; if He does not, He abandons the people before Him who are ready to receive instruction. With this single question, Guanding removes the foundation from classifications fixed to chronological periods.

What the Buddha teaches depends not only on what comes earlier or later on a clock, but on who stands before Him, what they are able to hear, and what they need at that moment. From the Buddha’s side, Great and Lesser Vehicle teachings can be presented together. From the side of sentient beings, some receive the teaching suddenly and some enter gradually. Sudden and gradual describe real differences in faculties, but fixed years cannot divide the Buddha’s entire teaching into sealed compartments.

The same treatise can therefore discuss Prajñā and the Lotus from several perspectives. In relation to real and skillful wisdom, Prajñā is profound and great; in relation to the buddhahood of those of the Two Vehicles, one point remains unexplained. Disclosure of the provisional teachings yields one distinction, while ease and difficulty of understanding yield another. Reconciliation does not rush to declare a winner; it first asks what question each statement answers.

The two, three, four, and eight repositories work in the same way. Different numbers mark different ways of gathering the teachings. Reconciliation allows them to be viewed together without grinding all their names into one. Nor does the basis of the Four Teachings lie merely in the repeated number four. One must ask how conditioned activities, censure, afflictions, and purity disclose corresponding Dharma-meanings, and how suffering, accumulation, path, and cessation are each present within every teaching.

When the question turns to the relative rank of scriptures, Guanding returns the criterion to those addressed. Emptiness, permanence, buddha-nature, and the One Vehicle in the Larger Prajñā, the Lotus, and the Nirvāṇa illuminate one another. The assemblies attended by Ānanda, Kāśyapa, and Śāriputra cannot by themselves determine the depth of the scriptures. Responsive participants appear as great within a great teaching and as lesser within a lesser teaching; the identity they manifest serves the work of transformation.

The many teachings are finally gathered in brief as the Śrāvaka Repository and the Bodhisattva Repository. Each addresses two kinds of person: some remain in the lesser teaching while others proceed from the lesser to the Great; some enter the Great Vehicle straightaway while others enter it gradually. People of different identities may be present at an assembly, but the teaching is still named according to its principal audience and its principal Dharma. Opening the two repositories into the Four Teachings unfolds a concise collection into finer distinctions; it does not invent a second and conflicting Buddha-Dharma.

This whole passage is Guanding’s private record, and only at “the Master said” does he begin recording Zhiyi. Guanding uses fishing and hunting in rivers and marshes to explain why he cannot avoid speaking at length. Zhiyi concludes with the Five Chapters linked like embroidery and with breaking through dry earth to see wet clay. The heart of classifying the teaching does not lie in producing the most elegant timetable. It lies in refusing to let the timetable conceal sentient beings: only by seeing for whom a teaching is given can one see how, beneath the different names of the scriptures, the same Buddha-Dharma reaches each person according to what is appropriate.
