The Buddha already knows when you will be able to understand. The same Dharma may sound like a wall today and become a doorway ten years from now. What has changed is not necessarily the Dharma, but the person capable of receiving it.
The Fahua Xuanyi says that the Buddha did not wait until he sat beneath the tree of awakening to begin deciding who was suited to the great Dharma and who needed skillful means. The causes and conditions of the great matter, the praise of skillful means, and the teaching of the real after a long time all issue from Buddha-wisdom on the Dharma-body ground, quiescent yet constantly illuminating. He had long seen your faculties and the season in which they would mature.
Thus some can enter the Tathāgata’s wisdom from the outset. Others must begin like the impoverished son, with skillful means drawing near and urging them to work diligently. Some have already gained a lesser benefit but must still be rebuked and shown the jewel tied to their robe. Others must pass through cleansing before they can take charge of the goods and receive the family estate.
These are not mutually conflicting teachings, but one father’s unchanging recognition of the same child. When the child does not recognize his father, the father does not force the entire inheritance upon him. When their minds come to trust one another, the doorway opens another measure.
The calculator first sets down the figures one by one and finally gathers them into the great number. The Buddha first teaches distinctively according to faculties, giving each kind of faculty a corresponding teaching; finally, he gathers the three into the great, enabling people to know that every distinction unfolds from the One Buddha-Vehicle. Each distinction brings real benefit, while convergence reveals their common destination.
This also explains why the Buddha stopped three times and the assembly requested four times. Buddha-wisdom is too profound to be received through curiosity alone; a request for the Dharma must mature into a genuine readiness to hear. The stops reveal its difficulty, the requests reveal their resolve, and only the words “we wish and rejoice to hear” after permission is granted truly open the doorway.
The heart of the characteristics of the teaching is not to draw up a ranking of scriptures, but to see how the Buddha abandons no kind of faculty. The high mountains receiving light first does not mean that the valleys will never see the sun; skillful means coming first does not mean that anyone must remain within skillful means.
When you do not understand for a time, do not imagine that the Buddha has forgotten you. That doorway may not yet be fully open, but the light that sees you has never been interrupted.

This is the first half of fascicle ten of the Fahua Xuanyi, whose title line attributes the teaching to Master Zhiyi of Tiantai.
Why One Must Understand the Characteristics of the Teaching to Propagate the Lotus
The fifth great chapter of the entire work explains the characteristics of the teaching. If one propagates other scriptures without explaining the characteristics of the teaching, their meaning suffers no harm. But if one propagates the Lotus Sutra without understanding the characteristics of the teaching, the scripture’s text and meaning will be incomplete.
Yet the sages’ original intent is profound and subtle, and the teachings are exceedingly difficult to classify. Earlier masters either inherited the explanations of renowned teachers or proposed interpretations through their own deep reflection. Although their accounts crisscross like paths between fields, it is unclear which truly accords with the truth. Two mutually contrary claims cannot both be established as meaningful, nor can truth allow conflicting judgments to stand together. If an interpretation has deep grounds and accords with the scriptures, it is recorded and adopted. If it has neither scriptural warrant nor doctrinal basis, it cannot be trusted or accepted.
Master Nanyue realized inwardly and also checked his realization against scriptures and treatises, following the Buddha’s words in every respect. Master Zhiyi of Tiantai restated and adopted his teaching. Classifying the teaching is now divided in brief into five parts: first, the general purport; second, setting forth divergent interpretations; third, clarifying difficulties; fourth, discerning what to accept and reject; and fifth, formally classifying the teaching.
The Other Scriptures Each Go Forth to Their Respective Conditions
The “general purport” means that, within what originally admits of no name or form, the Buddha provisionally employs names and forms to teach the Dharma. He taught the other scriptures, each in accord with the appropriate conditions, so that sentient beings might gain benefit.
For example, the Avataṃsaka Sūtra first receives faculties suited to the Perfect and Distinct, as high mountains are first illuminated by the sun. It directly explains the virtues of the stages from the abodes upward and the grounds upward within sequential and nonsequential practice, but it does not discern the Tathāgata’s intent in suddenly teaching this way.
When the four Āgamas were taught, the Ekottarika Āgama explained causes and fruits among humans and devas, the Madhyama Āgama explained the profound meaning of true quiescence, the Saṃyukta Āgama explained the various meditative concentrations, and the Dīrgha Āgama refuted non-Buddhist teachings. The four collections also taught impermanence in common, instructing people to know suffering, sever accumulation, realize cessation, and cultivate the path, but they did not explicitly reveal why the Tathāgata skillfully and circuitously established lesser Dharmas.
When the various Vaipulya scriptures were taught, they subdued attachment to the small, rebuked partial views, praised the great Dharma, and extolled the perfect meaning, revealing compassion, practice, and vows; both their phenomenal forms and doctrinal principles were exceedingly excellent. But they did not explicitly reveal why great and small faculties were brought together in the same assembly, or why rebuke and praise were employed at the same time.
From the shared meaning of the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra, three kinds of practitioners enter together; from its distinct meaning, bodhisattvas advance alone. The scripture extensively surveys the five aggregates and twelve sense fields so that all become pure, open through emptiness, and dissolved, but it does not explicitly reveal the intent behind what is shared and what is not shared.
The Nirvāṇa Sūtra, taught at the end, briefly rejects the three kinds of practice and roughly indicates the sequence of the five flavors, yet it still does not fully explain the Tathāgata’s intent in arranging the several teachings, tracing their beginning, and gathering their end. These scriptures all accord with the inclinations of sentient beings and enable them to gain benefit; they do not specifically discuss the Buddha’s intent in arranging the teachings of his whole lifetime. To ask where that intent ultimately leads, one must still turn to the present scripture for its disclosure.
The Present Scripture Discusses Only the Great Outline of Establishing the Teaching
The present scripture has a different focus. The categories of the various Dharma gates, Great and Lesser Vehicle contemplations, the ten powers, fearlessnesses, and the many regulations are no longer discussed in detail here, because earlier scriptures have already taught them. The present scripture exclusively discusses the Tathāgata’s original starting point in arranging the teaching, how he observed and selected faculties midway and bestowed teachings upon them, how gradual and sudden teachings were each made timely, and how the causes and conditions of the great matter reached their ultimate conclusion. It teaches the overall framework of the teaching, the comprehensive instrument by which the great work of transformation gathers sentient beings.
Those who had planted deeply in past lives and possessed mature faculties were suddenly given the great Dharma from the outset. Their bodhisattva stages, practices, and virtues were directly explained, without words concerning lesser Dharmas. The scripture says: “When they first saw my body and heard my teaching, they all believed, accepted, and entered the Tathāgata’s wisdom.”
For those unable to bear the great Dharma, the Tathāgata concealed his immeasurable wondrous virtues and, by skillful means, drew gradually near through a Dharma pleasing to the impoverished son, telling him to work diligently. The scripture says: “If I were to praise the Buddha Vehicle, sentient beings would sink into suffering.” Such people should enter the Buddha’s wisdom gradually by this method.
Once they had attained the path, they should be rebuked, just as the Vaipulya teaching uses the great Dharma to break attachment to lesser Dharmas. The scripture says: “After sternly rebuking him, he showed him the jewel tied to his robe.” If their faculties were suited to the concurrent treatment of the great and the small, the half and full teachings would cleanse their attachments; as in the Large Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra, grasping at all characteristics was dispelled so that different paths could converge on one purport. The scripture says: “He was about to lead the assembly across a perilous road.”
After they had passed beyond this difficulty, the relation of child and father was established, and the family estate was entrusted to them. The provisional Trace manifested nearby was brushed aside, and the real Origin in the distant past was revealed.
First Setting Down the Calculation, Then Eliminating It
One should know that this scripture discusses only the great outline of the Tathāgata’s establishment of the teaching; it does not explain the fine subdivisions in detail. It is like a person making a calculation, who first sets each number down and later eliminates the separate figures by gathering them into the total. Only the total is fixed and recorded; minute quantities such as pecks and bushels are no longer retained.
Thus the Sūtra of Innumerable Meanings says: “Immeasurable meanings arise from one Dharma.” Distinguishingly teaching the three vehicles from the One Buddha-Vehicle is like first setting down the figures. Drawing immeasurable meanings back into one Dharma and gathering the three vehicles into the Great Vehicle is like eliminating the fractions and recording only the total.
All these intentions of the teaching issue from wisdom on the Dharma-body ground, quiescent yet constantly illuminating. It is not that only upon arriving beneath the bodhi tree did the Buddha begin to observe which sentient beings should receive the great Dharma and which should receive lesser Dharmas. Buddha-wisdom had illuminated their faculties since the distant past.
The scripture says: “They appear in the world solely because of the causes and conditions of one great matter.” This shows that the great faculties had long been seen. It also says: “Earnestly praising skillful means.” This shows that the lesser faculties had long been seen. It further says: “After the Dharma of the buddhas has remained for a long time, the real must be taught.” This shows that the means of gathering the small into the great had also long been seen.
The “Faith and Understanding” chapter says: “Seated on the lion throne, he saw his son and recognized him at once.” This shows that the great faculties had been discerned from the beginning and for a long time. It also says: “From within a window, he saw his son in the distance.” This shows that the lesser faculties had long been discerned. It further says: “He secretly dispatched two men, who drew gradually near by skillful means and told him to work diligently.” This shows that the time for opening out the three vehicles had long been discerned. It also says: “Their minds came to trust one another, and he entered and left without difficulty.” This shows that the time for discipline and rebuke had long been discerned. It further says: “He took charge of and understood all the goods.” This shows that the time for cleansing attachments had long been discerned. It also says: “Later he entrusted the family estate to him.” This shows that the time for bringing teaching and practice to completion had long been discerned.
Why It Is Most Difficult to Believe and Understand
The Buddha’s original intent is so profound that even the Bodhisattva Maitreya could not know the causes and conditions of what the Buddha did, much less bodhisattvas of lower stages, practitioners of the two vehicles, or ordinary people. The scripture says: “Only I know this characteristic; the buddhas of the ten directions do likewise.”
It further says that, among what has already been taught, what is being taught now, and what will be taught, the present scripture is the most difficult to believe and understand. Earlier scriptures belong to what has already been taught and were taught in accord with the inclinations of sentient beings. They did not clearly disclose this intent of the Buddha and were therefore easier to believe and understand. The Sūtra of Innumerable Meanings belongs to what is being taught now and still accords with sentient beings’ inclinations, so it too is easier to believe and understand. The Nirvāṇa Sūtra belongs to what will be taught. Because sentient beings will already have heard the intent of the teaching disclosed by the present scripture, it too is easier to believe and understand.
When the Buddha was about to teach the present teaching, the assembly’s doubts and requests arose repeatedly, as the passages in both the Trace Gate and the Origin Gate show in detail. When the Buddha accepted their request and taught, what he taught was precisely the intent of the teaching. The intent of the teaching is the Buddha’s intent, and the Buddha’s intent is Buddha-wisdom. Because Buddha-wisdom is exceedingly profound, the Buddha stopped three times and the assembly requested four times. Compared with this difficulty, the other scriptures appear easy.
Compared with the Stops and Requests in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra
When the Buddha first sat at the place of awakening, Brahmā’s first request for the Dharma simply asked the Buddha directly to teach and was not interwoven with a net of doubts. The earnest exchanges that later attended the teaching of the various Vaipulya scriptures can be seen in their texts. When the Large Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra was taught, it was still in response to Brahmā’s original request. Only the scene in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra in which the assembly requests the Bodhisattva Vajragarbha to teach the Dharma of the ten grounds can be compared with the repeated stops and requests in the present scripture.
Some treatise masters emphasize this point and judge the Avataṃsaka Sūtra superior to the Lotus Sutra, saying that a request made by a Lesser Vehicle practitioner cannot equal one made by a bodhisattva. This sees only one side. When Śāriputra expressed the assembly’s intent, he said: “Children born from the Buddha’s mouth join their palms and gaze upward in expectation. The bodhisattvas seeking the Buddha path number fully eighty thousand; all wish to hear the complete path.” How could the request have been made by only one Lesser Vehicle practitioner? The Bodhisattva Maitreya likewise gathered the assembly’s intent and asked the Bodhisattva Mañjuśrī to resolve their doubts. How does this differ fundamentally from the Bodhisattva Liberation Moon asking the Bodhisattva Vajragarbha to resolve doubts?
From the Origin Gate, moreover, bodhisattvas request the Buddha to teach the Buddha-Dharma. How could this be compared only with bodhisattvas requesting another bodhisattva to teach bodhisattva-Dharma? If one looks specifically at the Dharma requested, the present scripture does indeed surpass the other in one respect.
From the perspective of the assembly, the bodhisattvas of the ten directions gathered like clouds in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra and were all Vairocana Buddha’s acquaintances from past lives. In the present scripture, all the bodhisattvas emerging from the earth aroused the aspiration under Śākyamuni Buddha and were taught and transformed by him. At first glance the two sides may appear equal, but their relationships still differ in distance and intimacy.
From the perspective of the teaching lord, the Avataṃsaka Sūtra says that buddhas of the ten directions teach the Avataṃsaka, and that the bodhisattvas empowered by them all bear the same names, such as Dharma Wisdom and Vajragarbha, but it does not say that those buddhas are all emanations of Vairocana Buddha. The present scripture, by contrast, explicitly describes three transformations of the lands, with four hundred trillion nayutas of lands in each direction, all filled with buddhas who are emanations of Śākyamuni Buddha. In this respect it too differs from the other scripture.
Those treatise masters regarded the Avataṃsaka Sūtra as superior and cited one or two statements in support. They did not deliberately elevate one scripture and denigrate another. Yet if one insists on comparing which scripture is superior, one may instead lose the original intent of the Buddha’s teaching.
The present Lotus Sutra opens the provisional to reveal the distant Origin. Doubts are more numerous and requests are doubled across the earlier Trace and later Origin sections precisely because it deeply discusses the Buddha’s outline for establishing the teaching and subtly reveals the sage’s innermost intent. Proximately it gathers the perfect cause; remotely it extends the original fruit. The assembly’s doubts and requests therefore do not cease. If one can precisely understand the characteristics of the teaching, one can recognize the Tathāgata’s provisional and real wisdoms. The intent of the teaching is exceedingly profound; this is only a brief account.
Why does the text and meaning of the Lotus become incomplete if the characteristics of the teaching are not understood? The fifth chapter opens by drawing a sharp distinction: when one propagates other scriptures, the teaching of the individual scripture can still stand even if the overall characteristics of the teaching are not explained. But when one propagates the Lotus, the text and meaning lack a crucial dimension unless one understands how the Tathāgata taught before and after.
What the present scripture reveals is precisely why the Buddha first taught the many Dharmas and how he then caused them to converge upon the one great matter. Reading what each scripture teaches at that moment enables one to gain the benefit of that particular scripture. To understand further why the teachings open and gather in this sequence, however, one must inquire into the Buddha’s intent.
This distinction makes the sequence of the teachings a complete process of the Tathāgata’s discerning faculties, bestowing benefit, and opening and revealing. It also turns the fifth chapter’s inquiry from the teachings back toward the Buddha’s intent.
Within What Has No Name or Form, Why Still Teach through Provisional Names and Forms?
What the Buddha realizes is originally unrestricted by name and form, yet in facing sentient beings he must still teach by means of names and forms. Teaching therefore has two aspects: reality cannot be exhausted by language, while compassion does not abandon sentient beings who can benefit through language.
The Avataṃsaka first illuminates great faculties and directly explains the stages, practices, and virtues of bodhisattvas. The four Āgamas respectively explain causes and fruits among humans and devas, the profound meaning of true quiescence, the various meditative concentrations, and the refutation of non-Buddhist teachings; together they also teach impermanence and knowing suffering, severing accumulation, realizing cessation, and cultivating the path. The Vaipulya teachings subdue attachment to the small, rebuke partial views, praise the great, and extol the perfect. The Prajñāpāramitā teachings enable three kinds of people to enter together while bodhisattvas advance alone, dispelling attachment to the aggregates and sense fields. The Nirvāṇa Sūtra later rejects the three kinds of practice and indicates the five flavors. Each teaching goes forth to the appropriate faculties and bestows benefit, and each has an irreplaceable function.
Yet bestowing benefit in response to faculties is not the same as having revealed the Buddha’s entire intent in arranging the teachings of his lifetime. What each scripture teaches in its own moment brings benefit to the corresponding faculties. The characteristics of the teaching explain further why these teachings were established, how they connect before and after, and where they ultimately return.
Why Does the Present Scripture Not Explain the Fine Mesh of Dharma Gates?
The Great and Lesser Vehicle contemplations, the ten powers and fearlessnesses, and the many regulations were already explained extensively in earlier scriptures. The present scripture instead reveals the original beginning of arranging the teaching, the selecting and bestowing that occur in the middle, how gradual and sudden teachings each become timely, and how the causes and conditions of the great matter reach their ultimate conclusion. What it preserves is the framework of establishing the teaching, gathering the beginning and end of the Buddha’s lifelong dispensation.
Those whose faculties had been deeply planted and matured in past lives could suddenly receive the great Dharma from the outset and directly enter the Tathāgata’s wisdom. For those unable to bear the great, the Buddha concealed his wondrous virtues and drew near by skillful means through a Dharma pleasing to the impoverished son, telling him to work diligently. Those who had already gained the path were then rebuked through the great to break their attachment to the small and shown the jewel tied to their robe. Those suited to the concurrent treatment of the great and the small were cleansed of attachment through the Prajñāpāramitā teachings and brought to a shared purport. Once this difficulty had been passed, the relation of child and father was settled, the family estate could be entrusted, the provisional Trace was brushed aside, and the real Origin revealed.
This sequence centers on the correspondence between Dharma and faculties. Sudden bestowal, skillful means, rebuke, concurrent treatment, and entrusting the estate are all skillful acts of the same Buddha-wisdom facing different degrees of maturity. An earlier Dharma gives sentient beings benefit; a later Dharma takes up what they have gained and enables them gradually to receive the entire family estate.
Why Does the Calculator First Set Figures Down and Later Eliminate Them?
The calculator first sets down the figures one by one, thereby establishing the total. At settlement, the scattered figures are gathered into the total; only the great number is recorded, and minute amounts measured in pecks and bushels are omitted. The Buddha’s teaching is the same: first he teaches distinctively according to faculties, unfolding the several teachings one by one; later he draws the immeasurable back into the one and gathers the three into the great, returning the earlier distinctions to the total.
“Immeasurable meanings arise from one Dharma” is like figures unfolding from one; “within the One Buddha-Vehicle, he distinctively teaches the three” is like first setting down the calculation. Drawing the immeasurable into the one and gathering the three into the great is like eliminating the figures later and recording only the great number. Only after the prior figures have each been established can they finally be gathered into the real total. Eliminating the calculation shows precisely that the distinct teachings each confer their own benefit while converging together upon the One Buddha-Vehicle.
When Did the Buddha See the Faculties of Sentient Beings?
The treatise places all these intentions of the teaching within “the Dharma-body ground, quiescent yet constantly illuminating.” The Buddha did not wait until he sat beneath the tree of awakening to decide on the spot whether to teach the great or the small. The causes and conditions of the great matter, the praise of skillful means, and the teaching of the real after a long time all show that he had long seen the great faculties, the lesser faculties, and the time for gathering the small into the great.
The “Faith and Understanding” chapter turns this long illumination into a sequence of images: seated on the lion throne, the father sees his son and recognizes him; from the window he sees his son in the distance; he secretly dispatches two men, who draw near by skillful means; their minds come to trust one another, and the son enters and leaves without difficulty; the son takes charge of and understands all the goods; finally, the father entrusts the family estate to him. The father always knows who the child is. What changes is whether the child can bear the inheritance and when he is ready for the next step.
Skillful means and opening and revealing both occur within this long-standing illumination of faculties. When men are sent to tell the son to work diligently, the Buddha’s intent receives him in accord with his faculties. When the family estate is entrusted, the same Buddha-intent brings those being transformed toward maturity. Although the teachings differ before and after, the wisdom that discerns remains continuous throughout.
Why Does the Buddha Stop Three Times and the Assembly Request Four Times?
Even Maitreya cannot recognize the causes and conditions of what the Buddha does, much less other practitioners. Among what has already been taught, what is being taught now, and what will be taught, the present scripture is the most difficult to believe and understand. Its difficulty lies in the fact that it does not merely teach one Dharma gate but reveals the intent of the teaching; the intent of the teaching is the Buddha’s intent, and the Buddha’s intent is Buddha-wisdom.
Thus, as the teaching is about to begin, doubts and requests arise layer upon layer. The Buddha stops three times, while Śāriputra repeatedly makes the request on behalf of the assembly. After the Buddha agrees to teach, Śāriputra again declares his wish and joy in hearing, completing the fourth request. The Origin Gate likewise reveals its profundity through repeated admonitions to believe and requests for the teaching. The stops show how difficult the teaching is to receive; the requests show that the assembly genuinely wishes to hear it.
Brahmā’s initial request simply asked for the Dharma directly, while the Vaipulya and Prajñāpāramitā teachings did not contain the same interwoven net of doubts. The scene in the Avataṃsaka in which Liberation Moon and the assembly request Vajragarbha to teach the ten grounds can be read alongside the present scripture from the perspective of repeated stops and requests. The identity of the Dharma requested and of the one asked to teach, however, must retain their own respective positions.
When Comparing the Two Scriptures, Why Finally Stop at the Buddha’s Purport?
If one looks only at the requester’s identity, it is easy to say that Śāriputra is inferior to a bodhisattva. Yet Śāriputra speaks for the entire assembly, including eighty thousand bodhisattvas seeking the Buddha path. If one looks at the Dharma requested, the Origin Gate has bodhisattvas ask the Buddha to teach the Buddha-Dharma, whereas the Avataṃsaka has bodhisattvas ask a bodhisattva to teach bodhisattva-Dharma. If one looks at the retinues, on one side are Vairocana Buddha’s acquaintances from past lives, gathering like clouds from the ten directions; on the other are bodhisattvas emerging from the earth, who aroused the aspiration under Śākyamuni and were taught and transformed by him. If one looks at the teaching lord, on one side those empowered bear the same names, such as Dharma Wisdom and Vajragarbha; on the other, the buddhas gathered from the ten directions are explicitly said to be emanations of Śākyamuni.
The point of these comparisons is to reveal the distinct teaching scene of each scripture while safeguarding the Buddha’s purport. The treatise states clearly that fixation on comparing superiority and inferiority may instead lose the Buddha’s purport. The Lotus has more doubts and doubled requests because, proximately, it gathers the perfect cause and, remotely, it extends the original fruit, deeply discussing the Buddha’s teaching and subtly revealing the sage’s heart. To understand the characteristics of the teaching is to see how the Tathāgata’s provisional and real wisdoms unfold from a single mind that discerns faculties into the teachings of a lifetime.
The earlier scriptures are easier to believe and understand because each benefits the faculties of its own moment without directly laying open the Tathāgata’s full intent in establishing the teachings before and after. The Sūtra of Innumerable Meanings is what is being taught now, and the Nirvāṇa Sūtra what will be taught; each is also easier to receive in accordance with the place it takes up. The present scripture is difficult because it asks one to look back from what is gained before one’s eyes toward the wisdom with which the teacher discerned faculties from the distant past: the provisional is what is bestowed in response to faculties, while the real is the ultimate destination. Though the teachings differ before and after, the Buddha’s intent remains consistent throughout.
The distinction between easy and difficult therefore lies in whether what is revealed is only the attainment made possible by an individual scripture or the Buddha’s intent running through the entire beginning and end. Upon reaching the characteristics of the teaching, the inquiry is precisely into the latter.
Through the Eye of the Shiqian
Zhanran’s Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian first divides the fifth chapter into the reason for its introduction and the explanation that opens the chapter. It then divides the general purport into three layers: the basis for teaching, the proper clarification of the general purport, and the concluding exhortation. The basis for teaching is that the Buddha’s own realization is originally inexpressible, yet vocal teaching is provisionally established for the faculties of this land. This allows “without name or form” and “teaching through provisional names and forms” to stand together.
The proper clarification of the general purport is illuminated through four gateways: the relative superiority of the teachings, the differences among beings’ faculties, the Tathāgata’s capacity to discern them, and comparison of what is taught. The first four kinds of scripture each benefit the faculties of their own moment and the teaching of their own section, while the present scripture preserves the great outline of establishing the teaching. Zhanran further organizes their sequence by using the later summary name “the Five Periods”; this name belongs to an ancient master’s classification and is not substituted for the root treatise’s own wording.
Within the gateway of beings’ faculties, those deeply planted in past lives, those unable to bear the great, those suited to rebuke, and those suited to concurrent treatment are gathered as four kinds of disposition. Settling the relation of father and son is explained as opening and revealing the provisional person; entrusting the family estate is explained as entrusting the provisional and real Dharmas. Brushing aside the provisional Trace and revealing the real Origin then turns into the Origin Gate. The calculator’s first setting down and later eliminating is further divided into Dharma explanation, simile, and the combined simile from the Sūtra of Innumerable Meanings, revealing the sequence of first unfolding and later gathering.
In the gateway of the Tathāgata’s capacity to discern, the Mirror first clarifies that the discernment of faculties comes from long ago and then that the Buddha’s intent is difficult to fathom. The lines from “Faith and Understanding”—seeing the son, looking through the window, secretly dispatching, mutual trust, taking charge of the goods, and entrusting the estate—are illuminated as one sequence of maturation. The gateway of comparison first compares what has already been taught, what is being taught now, and what will be taught, then compares the doubts and requests with those in the other scriptures.
The Mirror’s most important boundary is that the Avataṃsaka can be grouped with the present scripture only in the structure of stops and requests; the Dharmas taught must not therefore be conflated. The Trace Gate’s three stops and four requests and the Origin Gate’s four requests and three admonitions must likewise be understood in the sequence of their events. Zhanran finally repeats Zhiyi’s self-admonition: if one competes over superiority and inferiority, one may lose the Buddha’s purport. The eye of the characteristics of the teaching thus returns to the root treatise’s concluding exhortation: recognizing the provisional and real before and after never departs from the Tathāgata’s one mind discerning faculties.

The fifth chapter, Classifying the Teaching, first explains why one cannot propagate the Lotus without understanding the characteristics of the teaching, then sets out five parts: the general purport, divergent interpretations, difficulties, acceptance and rejection, and the classification of the teaching itself. This unit unfolds only the first part. Rather than detailing the contemplations of the several gateways, it asks how the Tathāgata discerns faculties, bestows teachings, and opens and reveals, and why the Lotus uniquely discloses the beginning and end of his lifelong dispensation and the Buddha’s intent.
1. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
This unit begins with 「大章第五、釋教相者,若弘餘經,不明教相,於義無傷;」 tr. “In the fifth great chapter, explaining the characteristics of the teaching: if one propagates other scriptures without clarifying the characteristics of the teaching, their meaning suffers no harm”〔T1716 0800a19〕 and ends with 「若能精知教相,則識如來權實二智也。 tr. “If one can precisely understand the characteristics of the teaching, one recognizes the Tathāgata’s provisional and real wisdoms. The intent of the teaching is exceedingly profound; this is only a brief account”〔T1716 0801a15–a16〕. The following line has already turned to the second part, divergent interpretations.
The heading at the beginning of the chapter appears as “Explaining the Characteristics of the Teaching,” while the list of five chapters at the beginning of the work has “Classifying the Teaching”; each form retains its own position. The Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian first judges, 「五教相中二:先明來意,次開章解釋。」 tr. “The fifth, characteristics of the teaching, has two parts: first clarifying the reason for its introduction, and next opening the chapter and explaining it”〔T1717 0948b15〕. After opening the chapter, it further divides the general purport into the basis for teaching, the proper clarification of the general purport, and the concluding exhortation. It then opens the proper clarification into four gateways with 「正大意中四:初明教法優劣,」 tr. “The proper general purport has four parts: first clarifying the relative superiority of the teachings”〔T1717 0948c08〕, followed in order by differences among beings’ faculties, the Tathāgata’s capacity to discern them, and comparison of what is taught.
According to the movement of the root treatise and the outline in the Shiqian, fourteen sections can be listed:
| Section | Root-treatise starting point | Content |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0800a19 | Reason for introducing the fifth chapter and its five parts |
| 2 | 0800a27 | Teaching through provisional names and forms within what has no name or form |
| 3 | 0800a29 | The Avataṃsaka, four Āgamas, Vaipulya, Prajñāpāramitā, and Nirvāṇa each go forth to conditions and confer benefit |
| 4 | 0800b12 | The present scripture discusses only the great outline of establishing the teaching |
| 5 | 0800b16 | Four kinds of faculty and the gradual and sudden bestowal of teachings |
| 6 | 0800b25 | Child and father, the family estate, and provisional Trace and real Origin |
| 7 | 0800b27 | The calculation simile and the Sūtra of Innumerable Meanings |
| 8 | 0800c03 | Discernment of faculties from long ago on the Dharma-body ground |
| 9 | 0800c08 | Six stages of discerning faculties in “Faith and Understanding” |
| 10 | 0800c13 | The difficulty of fathoming the Buddha’s intent and what has already been taught, is being taught now, and will be taught |
| 11 | 0800c19 | Doubts and requests in the Trace and Origin and the three stops and four requests |
| 12 | 0800c25 | The request to teach in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra as a structural parallel |
| 13 | 0801a02 | Comparison through the Dharma requested, retinues, and teaching lord |
| 14 | 0801a10 | Not competing over superiority and inferiority, and the concluding exhortation |
The title line for the fascicle attributes the teaching of the entire passage to Zhiyi and its recording to Guanding. This unit contains no shift of layer marked by “private explanation” or a comparable expression, and the Shiqian does not separately judge any passage to be Guanding’s private explanation. Names such as the four gateways, four kinds of disposition, and threefold comparison remain Zhanran’s later exegetical outline; they are not retrojected as a list stated by the root treatise.
2. Formation and Transmission
In the prefatory account, Guanding records, 「次在江陵,奉蒙玄義」 tr. “Next, in Jiangling, I reverently received the Profound Meaning”〔T1716 0681a16〕. The Guoqing Bailu (Hundred Records of Guoqing) likewise records, 「至荊答地恩。 tr. “He went to Jing to repay the kindness of the land and built Yuquan Monastery; Zhang’an reverently received the Profound Meaning”〔T1934 0823b28〕. Guanding also explicitly writes, 「聿遵聖典,書而傳之,《玄》、《文》各十卷。」 tr. “Thereupon, following the sacred canon, I wrote and transmitted it: the Profound Meaning and the Words and Phrases each in ten fascicles”〔T1716 0681a22〕. On this evidence, this unit is treated as Zhiyi’s teaching of the Profound Meaning at Jiangling as heard and recorded by Guanding. The Profound Meaning is the ten-fascicle Fahua Xuanyi, and the Words and Phrases is the ten-fascicle Fahua Wenju. Their present display in upper and lower parts does not alter Guanding’s own record of ten fascicles each.
3. Scriptures and Treatises Cited by Zhiyi
Classification of the Functions of Scriptural Collections
The root treatise first gives a synthetic account of the functions revealed by the several scriptural teachings. These statements are Zhiyi’s classification of the teachings; they do not claim that each scripture contains one identical sentence. All corresponding scenes in the received texts are listed below.
| Root-treatise classification | Scene in the received text | Relationship |
|---|---|---|
| The Avataṃsaka Sūtra first receives faculties suited to the Perfect and Distinct and clarifies the virtues of the stages from the abodes upward and the grounds upward〔T1716 0800a29–0800b02〕 | In the scene of the ten abodes, T0278 reads 「爾時,法慧菩薩承佛神力,入菩薩無量方便三昧正受。」 tr. “At that time, the Bodhisattva Dharma Wisdom, empowered by the Buddha’s spiritual power, entered the bodhisattvas’ samādhi of immeasurable skillful means”〔T0278 0444c07〕. In the scene of the ten grounds it reads 「爾時,金剛藏菩薩摩訶薩承佛威神,入菩薩大智慧光明三昧。」 tr. “At that time, the bodhisattva-mahāsattva Vajragarbha, empowered by the Buddha’s majestic spiritual power, entered the bodhisattvas’ samādhi of the radiance of great wisdom”〔T0278 0542b13〕. | The scenes of the stages of the abodes and grounds are visible; the intent of teaching suddenly is the root treatise’s judgment. |
| The Ekottarika Āgama explains causes and fruits among humans and devas〔T1716 0800b02〕 | 「一法修行已、多修行已,受人中福,受天上福,得泥洹證,所謂不殺生也。」 tr. “After cultivating one Dharma and cultivating it much, one receives blessings among humans, blessings in the heavens, and realization of nirvāṇa—namely, through not killing living beings”〔T0125 0576a24〕. | Human and heavenly rewards appear in one sentence; one instance is not made to stand for the entire scripture. |
| The Madhyama Āgama explains the profound meaning of true quiescence〔T1716 0800b02–b03〕 | 「見寂靜滅盡,無為不欲有,」 tr. “Seeing quiescence and extinction, the unconditioned, one does not desire existence”〔T0026 0497c12〕; 「了解覺諸法,我受最勝法。」 tr. “Understanding and awakening to the various dharmas, I receive the supreme Dharma”〔T0026 0497c15〕. | Scenes of quiescence, extinction, and the unconditioned are visible. |
| The Saṃyukta Āgama explains the various meditative concentrations〔T1716 0800b03〕 | 「初禪正受時,言語寂滅,第二禪正受時,覺觀寂滅,第三禪正受時,喜心寂滅,第四禪正受時,出入息寂滅;」 tr. “When one enters the first dhyāna, speech ceases; when one enters the second dhyāna, directed and sustained thought cease; when one enters the third dhyāna, joy ceases; when one enters the fourth dhyāna, inhalation and exhalation cease”〔T0099 0121b02〕. | The sequence of the four dhyānas and their cessations is visible. |
| The Dīrgha Āgama refutes non-Buddhist teachings〔T1716 0800b03〕 | A brahman first says, 「今我論者,無有他世,亦無更生,無罪福報,汝論云何?」 tr. “My thesis is that there is no other world, no further birth, and no recompense for wrongdoing or merit. What is your position?”〔T0001 0043a01〕. Kāśyapa replies, 「以此可知,必有他世,亦有更生,有善惡報。」 tr. “From this one can know that there certainly is another world, further birth, and recompense for good and evil”〔T0001 0043a06〕, and further challenges him, 「何為守迷,自生邪見耶?」 tr. “Why persist in confusion and yourself give rise to wrong views?”〔T0001 0043b07〕. | The scene of refuting a brahman’s divergent view through repeated exchange is visible. |
| The various Vaipulya teachings subdue attachment to the small, rebuke the partial, praise the great, and extol the perfect〔T1716 0800b05〕. | The Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian explains this separately through the “Disciples” and “Bodhisattvas” chapters of the Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa and other passages. The received text also says, 「夫求法者,不著佛求,不著法求,不著眾求;」 tr. “One who seeks the Dharma does not seek it through attachment to the Buddha, the Dharma, or the assembly”〔T0475 0546a11〕. | Classification by individual chapters belongs to Zhanran’s later explanation; the root treatise’s “various Vaipulya teachings” remains a plural class term. |
| In the Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra, three kinds of practitioners enter together from the shared perspective, while bodhisattvas advance alone from the distinct perspective〔T1716 0800b07〕. | The received text opens, 「爾時世尊自敷師子座,結跏趺坐,直身繫念在前,入三昧王三昧,」 tr. “At that time the World-Honored One arranged the lion seat himself, sat cross-legged with body upright and mindfulness fixed before him, and entered the samādhi-king samādhi”〔T0223 0217b08〕. After emitting light it says, 「眾生,各各自念佛獨為我說法不為餘人。」 tr. “Each sentient being thought that the Buddha was teaching the Dharma solely for me and for no one else”〔T0223 0218a15–a16〕. | The identity and scene of the scripture can be established; shared, distinct, and the dispelling of attachment to characteristics are Tiantai’s comprehensive classification. |
| The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra briefly rejects the three kinds of practice and roughly indicates the five flavors〔T1716 0800b09〕. “These three kinds of practice possess no real meaning. I will now teach the superior three practices”〔T0374 0377b25〕; 「譬如從牛出乳,從乳出酪,從酪出生穌,從生穌出熟穌,從熟穌出醍醐,」 tr. “It is like milk coming from a cow, curds from milk, raw ghee from curds, refined ghee from raw ghee, and clarified essence from refined ghee”〔T0374 0449a06〕. | Both the scene of the three practices and that of the five flavors can be located. |
The root treatise says that these scriptures each go forth to their respective conditions and bring sentient beings benefit, yet do not fully reveal the Tathāgata’s intent in arranging the beginning and end of the teachings. This is the comparative axis of the unit; it does not deny the benefit conferred by each scripture in its own section.
Root-Treatise Excerpts and Synopses against the Received Text
This unit cites twenty-two groups from the Lotus Sutra and the Sūtra of Innumerable Meanings, including identical wording, variant wording, excerpts, syntheses across separate passages, and synopses of scenes. The complete table follows.

Doubts and Requests in the Trace and Origin
The root treatise uses the three stops and four requests to reveal the profundity of Buddha-wisdom. The event sequence in the Trace Gate of the Lotus Sutra closes as follows:
| Sequence | Event in the received text | Position |
|---|---|---|
tr. “Stop, Śāriputra! There is no need to speak further”〔T0262 0005c09〕. | The Buddha’s first stop after praising |
| First request | 「唯願世尊敷演斯事。」 tr. “I only pray that the World-Honored One will expound this matter”〔T0262 0006b10〕. | Śāriputra voices the doubts of the fourfold assembly and requests |
tr. “Stop, stop! There is no need to speak further”〔T0262 0006c07〕. | The Buddha stops a second time |
| Second request | 「世尊,唯願說之,唯願說之!」 tr. “World-Honored One, I only pray that you will teach it, I only pray that you will teach it!”〔T0262 0006c09〕. | Second request |
| Third stop | 「若說是事,」 tr. “If I were to teach this matter...”〔T0262 0006c16〕. | The Buddha’s third stop |
“World-Honored One! I only pray that you will teach it, I only pray that you will teach it!”〔T0262 0006c21〕. | Third request |
| Permission to teach | 「汝已慇懃三請,豈得不說。」 tr. “You have already earnestly requested three times; how could I not teach?”〔T0262 0007a05〕. | The Tathāgata agrees to teach |
tr. “Indeed, World-Honored One! We wish and rejoice to hear”〔T0262 0007a14〕. | After permission, Śāriputra wishes to hear |
The fourth request is therefore not a fourth repetition of the formal petition, but Śāriputra’s wish and joy in hearing after the Tathāgata agrees to teach. The Origin Gate instead has three admonitions to believe and four requests to teach. The Buddha says, 「汝等當信解如來誠諦之語。」 tr. “You should believe and understand the Tathāgata’s truthful and veracious words”〔T0262 0042b01〕. Led by Maitreya, the assembly states three times, 「唯願說之,我等當信受佛語。」 tr. “We only pray that you will teach it; we will believe and accept the Buddha’s words”〔T0262 0042b05〕, and after those three declarations repeats once more, 「唯願說之,我等當信受佛語。」 tr. “We only pray that you will teach it; we will believe and accept the Buddha’s words”〔T0262 0042b06〕.
Structural Parallel in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra
In the ten-grounds scene of T0278, Vajragarbha first lists the ten grounds and then remains silent〔0543a05〕. Liberation Moon knows the minds of the assembly and requests the teaching〔0543a10〕, then requests again〔0543b07〕 and yet again〔0543c01〕; the assembly requests with one voice〔0543c21〕, after which Vajragarbha teaches. Zhanran classifies this as three requests and two stops. It is grouped with the Lotus Sutra only in the sequence of stops and requests, and he explicitly says, 「法非連類,不可為儔。」 tr. “The Dharma is not of the same kind and cannot be made its peer”〔T1717 0950c02〕.
The root treatise also compares those empowered under identical names. In the scene of the ten abodes in T0278, the Tathāgatas of the ten directions 「悉號法慧」 tr. “were all named Dharma Wisdom”〔T0278 0444c10〕; in the scene of the ten grounds, the buddhas 「皆現其身,名金剛藏;」 tr. “all manifested their bodies and were named Vajragarbha”〔T0278 0542b16〕. The Lotus Sutra, by contrast, explicitly states that the emanations assemble. The root treatise compares the two scriptures through the Dharma requested, the relationship of the retinues, and the narrative of the teaching lord, then applies its own brake: 「若較其優劣,恐成失旨。」 tr. “If one compares their superiority and inferiority, one may end by losing the purport”〔T1716 0801a11〕.
Referents under Investigation
The root treatise’s “Brahmā’s first request” does not identify a unique scripture. Chinese translations of scriptures, Vinayas, and treatises contain several structurally parallel narratives in which Brahmā requests the turning of the Dharma-wheel after the awakening. The available wording is insufficient to assign a single canon number, so the referent is expressly marked under investigation.
The root treatise’s “various Vaipulya teachings” is a plural class term. The Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian cites the Great Vaipulya Dhāraṇī Sūtra and the Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa as examples. This establishes only Zhanran’s examples and does not combine the two scriptures into a unique referent for the root treatise.
The root treatise explicitly titles the Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra, which can be identified as T0223, but “still responding to Brahmā’s request” does not mean that a new request occurs at the scripture’s opening scene. Zhanran states explicitly, 「此中無請,仍用梵王初通請竟,是故此說猶酬梵王。」 tr. “There is no request here; it still uses Brahmā’s initial general request already completed, and therefore this teaching still responds to Brahmā”〔T1717 0950a24〕.
4. Essential Explanations from the Shiqian [the Mirror]
The Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian first explains the characteristics of the teaching through their necessity for propagating the scripture: 「若弘法華,須辨一期五時教相,說佛本意,」 tr. “If one propagates the Lotus, one must discern the Five-Period characteristics of the teaching throughout one lifetime, thereby explaining the Buddha’s original intent”〔T1717 0948b18〕. “The Five Periods” is a later summary term for gathering the teachings of the Buddha’s lifetime. The root treatise itself says only that if one propagates the Lotus without clarifying the characteristics of the teaching, its text and meaning will be incomplete.
The first layer of the general purport is that the Buddha’s own realization cannot be expressed, while vocal teaching is provisionally established for the faculties of this land: 「初文者,約佛自證本不可說,若被此土機緣,須假立聲教。」 tr. “The initial passage concerns the Buddha’s own realization, which is originally inexpressible; when responding to the faculties and conditions of this land, vocal teaching must be provisionally established”〔T1717 0948c06〕. The proper clarification of the general purport then has four gateways: the relative superiority of the teachings, differences among beings’ faculties, the Tathāgata’s capacity to discern them, and comparison of what is taught. The first four kinds of scriptural teaching are classified as 「當機當部,不涉始終」 tr. “addressing the faculties and section at hand, without extending to the beginning and end”〔T1717 0948c10〕, whereas the Lotus 「唯存大綱,不事綱目。」 tr. “preserves only the great outline and does not concern itself with the fine mesh”〔T1717 0949a23〕.
Zhanran divides the original beginning into three layers—the original cause, the time of Great Penetrating Wisdom Excellence, and the initial attainment today—and explains selecting and bestowing as 「觀機為取,逗物為與,適者得也,」 tr. “observing faculties is selecting, addressing beings is bestowing, and those for whom it is fitting attain”〔T1717 0949b01〕. The gateway of beings’ faculties uses four kinds—those deeply planted in past lives, those unable to bear the great, those suited to rebuke, and those suited to concurrent treatment—to illuminate respectively sudden bestowal, bestowal of the small, rebuking the small with the great, and cleansing through the Prajñāpāramitā teachings. The four names are a synthesis by the later commentary; the root treatise narrates them in sequence without establishing such labels.
For the passage on father and son and the family estate, the Shiqian explains, 「定之以父子,開權人也。 tr. “Settling them as father and son opens and reveals the provisional person; entrusting the family estate entrusts the provisional and real Dharmas”〔T1717 0949b23〕. It then assigns provisional Trace and real Origin to the Origin Gate. The calculator’s simile is divided into three layers—Dharma, simile, and the combined simile from the Sūtra of Innumerable Meanings—whose function is first to unfold the figures of teaching and transforming and later to gather them into the great number of the Buddha’s intent.
Within the gateway of the Buddha’s intent discerning faculties, the Mirror distinguishes the long duration of that discernment from the difficulty of fathoming the Buddha’s intent. The six synoptic citations from “Faith and Understanding” are read in sequence as seeing the father, looking through the window, secretly dispatching, mutual trust, taking charge of the goods, and entrusting the estate. This is Zhanran’s later synoptic reading of the simile’s sequence; it does not join the six statements into one continuous passage of the root scripture.
The gateway of comparison first compares what has already been taught, what is being taught now, and what will be taught with the Buddha’s lifelong dispensation; it then compares the doubts and requests with those in other scriptures. The Trace Gate’s three stops and four requests and the Origin Gate’s four requests and three admonitions are both established through the event sequence. The Avataṃsaka Sūtra can be grouped with them only in the structure of stops and requests, not in the Dharma taught. Finally, Zhanran draws the root treatise’s own boundary back into view with 「故大師自云:若較其優劣,恐失佛旨,」 tr. “Therefore the Great Master himself says: if one compares their superiority and inferiority, one may lose the Buddha’s purport”〔T1717 0950c26〕, then closes the unit through the conclusion and concluding exhortation.
5. Explanations of Various Masters
Zhiquan’s Fahua Jing Xuanqian Zhengshi (X0592) comments continuously on this unit beginning with 「籤中法華前云當文者,通指一部之文也。」 tr. “In the Shiqian, the earlier words ‘the present text’ concerning the Lotus refer generally to the text of the entire work”〔X0592 0627b03〕. It states explicitly, 「法華中須辯五時者,以此教相具分別前之四章也。」 tr. “The Five Periods must be discerned within the Lotus because these characteristics of the teaching fully distinguish the preceding four chapters”〔X0592 0627b05〕, and follows the Shiqian through the relative superiority of the teachings, differences among beings’ faculties, the two intentions of the present scripture, and the stops and requests in the Avataṃsaka. Its explanation of the present section ends at 0628c13; the next line, 「二、出異解。」 tr. “Second, setting forth divergent interpretations”〔X0592 0628c14〕, has already entered the following part.
Zhixu’s Fahua Jing Xuanyi Jieyao (X0589) begins with 「第五釋教相者。 “Fifth, as for explaining the characteristics of the teaching: within what has no name or form, the Buddha teaches the other scriptures through provisional names and forms”〔X0589 0540a16〕. It then excerpts in sequence the scriptures’ going forth to conditions, the great outline of the present scripture, faculties, the discernment of faculties, and the doubts and requests, ending with 「若能精知教相,則識如來權實二智也。」 tr. “If one can precisely understand the characteristics of the teaching, one recognizes the Tathāgata’s provisional and real wisdoms”〔X0589 0540b07〕. It is a direct witness through selected excerpts, not another sentence-by-sentence commentary.
Zhiyuan’s Fayuan Jiyao on the Profound Meaning of the Nirvāṇa Sūtra (T1766) is not a commentary on the root treatise, but it explains the Avataṃsaka, Deer Park, Vaipulya, Prajñāpāramitā, and Lotus–Nirvāṇa teaching scenes through differences in faculties. It reads, 「由此根機不等,故有五時之教差別,」 tr. “Because faculties differ in this way, there are distinctions among the teachings of the Five Periods”〔T1766 0017a07〕, and 「法華、涅槃會前頓漸歸非頓非漸。」 tr. “The Lotus and Nirvāṇa gather the preceding sudden and gradual teachings and return them to what is neither sudden nor gradual”〔T1766 0017a10〕. It can serve as a direct parallel witness from the Shanwai line.
The three groups of ancient commentaries can be placed alongside one another as reception-history materials. Within their direct scope, no paired textual evidence sufficient to establish a dispute between the Shanjia and Shanwai lines has been found. They can therefore be recorded only as a direct commentary on the same topic, selected excerpts, and a parallel; they do not suffice for judging the relative standing of the ancient masters.
6. Terminology
Characteristics of the teaching. This unit clarifies the characteristics of the teaching through the sequence of the Buddha’s lifelong dispensation, its responsiveness to faculties, its opening and gathering, and the Buddha’s intent. It ends by saying that understanding the characteristics of the teaching enables one to recognize the Tathāgata’s provisional and real wisdoms. The term does not indicate only the teachings’ external appearance, but their classification through how the Tathāgata establishes them according to faculties and finally reveals their great outline.
General purport. The first of the five parts. Here it is not a generic word for a summary. It first explains generally how the other scriptures each go forth to conditions and confer benefit and how the present scripture gathers the beginning and end of establishing the teaching; it then reveals the Buddha’s intent through dispositions, discernment of faculties, and comparison through doubts and requests.
Fine mesh and framework. Earlier scriptures have already taught the fine mesh of Great and Lesser Vehicle contemplations and other matters; the present scripture focuses on the great outline of the Tathāgata’s establishment of the teaching. The root treatise uses “framework” and “the comprehensive snare and trap of the great work of transformation” to express its gathering function. Zhanran explains “frame” as “correct” and separately discusses the graph forms for snare and trap.
Original beginning. The starting point of the Tathāgata’s arrangement of the teaching. Zhanran divides it into three layers—the original cause, the time of Great Penetrating Wisdom Excellence, and the initial attainment today—showing that the original beginning is not only a recent point of awakening.
Selecting and bestowing. Zhanran explains observing faculties as selecting and addressing beings by bestowing Dharma as bestowing. Making the gradual and sudden timely means that the Dharma bestowed corresponds to the faculties selected.
Deeply planted in past lives. Because these faculties were deeply and maturely planted in previous lives, the great Dharma could be bestowed suddenly from the outset. The Shiqian’s citation uses a graph meaning “planted,” while the root treatise uses a graph meaning “cultivated”; both forms are recorded.
The Dharma-body ground, quiescent yet constantly illuminating. The Buddha has discerned the conditions of great and lesser faculties since the distant past; he did not begin illuminating them only upon reaching the tree of awakening. The later commentary further explains this duration through the first abode of the true cause in the original ground; the language of stages remains at the later exegetical layer.
Intent of the teaching, Buddha’s intent, and Buddha-wisdom. In the passage on doubts and requests, the root treatise explicitly links these three. What is taught upon acceptance of the request is the intent of the teaching; the intent of the teaching is the Buddha’s intent; and the Buddha’s intent is Buddha-wisdom. This chain explains that the difficulty of the doubts and requests lies in their object being not one ordinary Dharma gate but the Buddha’s profound intent in establishing the teachings.
Distance and intimacy. The root treatise compares Vairocana Buddha’s acquaintances from past lives in the Avataṃsaka Sūtra with those who aroused the aspiration under Śākyamuni in the Lotus Sutra. Zhanran explains that acquaintances can mutually help one another, whereas when the aspiration is aroused under a teacher, the teacher’s position does not shift. Distance and intimacy concern the source of the relationship, not the relative rank of the persons.
7. Similes · Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward
The high mountains first receiving light reveals that those deeply planted in past lives receive the great Dharma from the outset. A Dharma pleasing to one in poverty and the injunction to work diligently reveal that those unable to bear the great must be approached through skillful means. The tied jewel, father and son, and family estate connect rebuke, mutual trust, taking charge of the goods, and entrusting the estate into a course from the small toward the great. All these images unfold from the scriptural lines and narratives employed by the root treatise.
The calculator’s simile especially reveals the general purport. First setting down the calculation allows the gradual and sudden work of teaching and transforming and the timely selection and bestowal each to be recorded. Later eliminating the calculation draws the immeasurable into the one and gathers the three into the great, recording only the great number and not retaining pecks and bushels. It does not erase the preceding minute figures; it gathers them into the total of establishing the teaching.
Read alongside the Lotus Sutra, “Skillful Means” reveals the causes and conditions of the great matter, the doubts and requests, and the distinctive teaching of the three; “Faith and Understanding” reveals the discernment of faculties and entrusting of the estate through the impoverished son’s sequence; and the gathering of emanations in “Beholding the Jeweled Stūpa” illuminates the root treatise’s comparison of teaching lords with the Avataṃsaka Sūtra. Read alongside the Sūtra of Innumerable Meanings, the arising of immeasurable meanings from one Dharma precisely fits the simile of first setting down and later eliminating.
Read alongside the Mohe Zhiguan, the root treatise here reveals the framework of the Buddha’s lifelong establishment of the teaching, while the latter treatise unfolds the practical sequence of contemplative practice; together they carry forward the two aspects of teaching and contemplation. The later passages on divergent interpretations, difficulties, acceptance and rejection, and classifying the teaching will use the Buddha’s intent, faculties, and the provisional and real wisdoms established in this unit to address, step by step, the divergent interpretations of earlier masters and the characteristics of the Buddha’s lifelong teaching.
8. Placement of the Editions
First, this unit takes T1716 as its base text. Its extracted range begins with the fascicle title at 0800a16, the first graph of the main text occurs at 0800a19, and the unit ends at 0801a16. The two anchors—the fascicle title and the first line of the main text—coexist without conflict.
Second, a line-by-line scan of this range found eighty-eight same-edition line anchors and no linked Taishō variant-reading markers. The count of textual notes for the main text of this unit can therefore be recorded as zero. This conclusion applies only to this range and is not extended to the entire fascicle or work.
Third, the root treatise reads 「南岳大師心有所證,又勘同經論,聿遵佛語,天台師述而從用,」 tr. “Master Nanyue realized inwardly and further checked his realization against scriptures and treatises, following the Buddha’s words; Master Zhiyi of Tiantai restated and adopted it”〔T1716 0800a25〕, while the Shiqian’s citation uses the alternate graph for “Nanyue”〔T1717 0948b27〕. Each graph form remains with its own text.
Fourth, the root treatise reads 「其宿殖淳厚者,初即頓與,」 tr. “Those whose past cultivation was deep and mature are suddenly given the great Dharma from the outset”〔T1716 0800b16〕, while the Shiqian’s citation uses the alternate graph meaning “planted.” The root treatise reads 「定之以子父,付之以家業,」 tr. “The relation of child and father is settled, and the family estate entrusted”〔T1716 0800b25〕, whereas the Shiqian reads 「定之以父子,開權人也。」 tr. “Settling them as father and son opens and reveals the provisional person”〔T1717 0949b23〕. The graph variants for cultivation and planting and the orders child-father and father-child are all recorded side by side without adjudication.
Fifth, the root treatise reads 「說教之綱格,大化之筌罤。」 tr. “the framework for teaching the Dharma, the comprehensive snare and trap of the great work of transformation”〔T1716 0800b15〕. The Shiqian separately says that the graph for “snare” should use the bamboo radical and that the graph for “trap” is recorded as in the Zhiguan〔T1717 0949b05〕. The base text retains its graph forms, while the later commentary’s discussion of those forms is recorded at its own layer.
Sixth, the root treatise ends with “opening the provisional to reveal the Origin,” while an earlier passage uses provisional Trace and real Origin. The later commentary distinguishes opening the provisional to reveal the real in the Trace Gate from opening the Trace to reveal the Origin in the Origin Gate. Each form is preserved according to its context; the root treatise is not regularized by a later fixed formula.
Seventh, the relationship of the six synoptic citations from “Faith and Understanding” to the received text includes identical wording, synthesis across separate passages, shifts of perspective, and synopsis of a scene. Every type is displayed in full in the table under section 3.
