心要Essence

If the Lotus and Nirvāṇa are both clarified essence, why are some gathered earlier and others later? Because what the Buddha intends to give is not twofold, while sentient beings do not mature at the same time.

When the Buddha first sat at the place of the path, the wisdom he had attained was subtle, wondrous, and foremost, and he originally intended to enable sentient beings to enter the Tathāgata’s wisdom directly. Only after seeing that their faculties were dull did he recall the skillful means of past buddhas and distinctly teach the Three Vehicles within the path of the One Vehicle. The sudden teaching does not attend only to the high mountains, and the gradual does not abandon the great Dharma. The sun first illuminating the high mountains does not mean that the great earth will forever lack light; milk first becoming curds does not mean that milk itself is at fault.

The same initial sudden teaching can therefore be called both milk and clarified essence. Viewed from its being the beginning of the teaching and the practitioner’s first steps, it is like milk. Viewed from those of great faculties immediately breaking ignorance and attaining the forbearance of non-arising, it is like clarified essence. The question is not only “What teaching is this?” but also “Who is receiving it, and how far have they gone?”

The “Faith and Understanding” chapter presents this path as father and son recognizing one another. At first the poor son sees his father and flees; later he is hired to clear away dung. Afterward he can freely enter and leave and manage the storehouses. Only at the end, before the relatives, does he learn that he has always been the son and that the whole family estate properly belongs to him. The father has not changed and the estate has not changed; what changes is the son’s capacity to bear the estate.

A farming family is the same. What is sown first ripens and is harvested first; what is sown later ripens and is harvested later. Some receive predictions and see the Tathāgata-nature in the Lotus. Others are not yet mature then and still must be tempered through Prajñā before being gathered in through the Nirvāṇa. The Lotus and Nirvāṇa both being clarified essence does not mean that everyone must mature at the same moment.

This is the heart-essence of using the three passages as evidence: skillful means does not leave reality to create another road. It gives those unable to walk onward now a road they can still travel. The Buddha does not cease transforming because an earlier batch has already matured, nor does he lower the destination because a later batch is not yet mature. He preserves a continuing road of transformation for faculties not yet mature, so that milk can become curds, refined ghee can become clarified essence, and the poor son has a road home.

How Do Three Scriptural Passages Serve as Evidence?

The second topic cites three scriptural passages as evidence: the “Skillful Means” chapter, the Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings, and the “Faith and Understanding” chapter.

The “Skillful Means” chapter says that when the Buddha first sat at the place of the path, he contemplated the bodhi tree and also walked back and forth in meditation. During three periods of seven days, he considered this matter: the wisdom he had attained was subtle, wondrous, and foremost, but sentient beings’ faculties were dull—how could he bring them across? He would rather not teach the Dharma and quickly enter nirvāṇa. He then recalled the power of skillful means practiced by past buddhas and thought that, concerning the path he had now attained, he too should distinctly teach the Three Vehicles.

“First sat at the place of the path” clarifies the sudden teaching. Why? When the Buddha descended from Tuṣita Heaven, his Dharma-body retinue accompanied him like dark clouds enveloping the moon and descended together into his mother’s womb. The womb was like empty space, and within it the Buddha constantly taught the wondrous Dharma. He continued until he first accomplished complete awakening at the quiescent place of the path and taught the Great Vehicle purely for the bodhisattvas, like the newly risen sun first illuminating the high mountains. This clarifies Śākyamuni Buddha’s initial sudden teaching.

The “Introduction” chapter further says that the Buddha emitted light from between his brows and universally illuminated eighteen thousand lands in the east. The assembly saw the lions among sacred lords expounding the scriptural Dharma, subtle, wondrous, and foremost, and teaching the bodhisattvas. The following passage then says that if people encounter suffering, nirvāṇa is taught for them so that the limits of all suffering are exhausted. This shows present buddhas teaching the sudden first and the gradual afterward.

When Mañjuśrī explained the assembly’s doubts, he cited past buddhas as doing the same. The scripture says that they further saw the tathāgatas naturally accomplishing the Buddha-path and the World-Honored Ones, amid the great assembly, extensively expounding profound and wondrous meanings of the Dharma; immediately afterward, every buddha land contained innumerable assemblies of śrāvakas. This shows past buddhas teaching the sudden first and the gradual afterward.

When the bodhisattvas emerging from the earth offered their greetings, the Buddha answered that it was so, it was so: sentient beings were easy to bring across; when they first saw the Buddha’s body and heard what he taught, they all accepted it in faith and entered the Tathāgata’s wisdom. Excepted were those who had previously cultivated the Lesser Vehicle; the Buddha now also enabled these people to hear this scripture and enter the Buddha’s wisdom. This shows Śākyamuni Buddha teaching the initial sudden and the later gradual.

Why Is the Initial Sudden Teaching Both Milk and Clarified Essence?

Initial sudden teachings such as these do not necessarily teach only Dharma-body bodhisattvas; ordinary beings of great faculties are also included. There are two meanings here. Those who awaken upon directly hearing the perfect and sudden teaching are like clarified essence. Beginners, though they hear the great teaching, have only just entered the ten faiths and still belong to the initial flavor. Since what is first can produce what follows, it is also like milk.

Although this is called sudden, the faculties involved include those for whom both vehicle and discipline are urgent and those for whom discipline is relaxed while the vehicle is urgent. Such karma-born beings cannot arrive by themselves. They must accompany the Buddha as response-born beings and be led into the seven places and eight assemblies. Great faculties stimulating the Buddha are like the forbearance grass; the Buddha’s perfect response and sudden teaching are like clarified essence issuing from that grass.

Because the sudden teaching comes first and one has only just entered the inner ordinary stages, it can still be called milk. Calling it milk does not mean its flavor is thin; it means that it is initial and fundamental. When a cow has newly given birth, blood changes into milk and remains pure within her body; once the calf makes the sound 『𡂡』, the mother cow lets down milk. The Buddha is likewise. When he first sat at the place of the path and newly accomplished complete awakening, the blood of ignorance and the other delusions had transformed into illumination, while the eighty thousand Dharma treasuries and twelve divisions of scripture were all fully present in the Dharma-body. The great faculties were like the calf and received the milk first. Milk is the first of all flavors and represents the sudden teaching standing at the beginning of all teachings; this is why the Avataṃsaka is called milk.

When distinguished through the three teachings of sudden, gradual, and indeterminate, it is called the sudden teaching and is itself clarified essence. When distinguished through the sequence of the five flavors, it is called the milk teaching.

Consider practitioners as well. Those of great faculties who receive the sudden teaching immediately break ignorance and attain the forbearance of non-arising; their practice is like clarified essence. Others receive this sudden teaching but cannot yet awaken and enter; they have only just established practice, so their practice is like milk. Viewed in relation to people of lesser faculties, their practice too is like milk. The great teaching was intended for them, but they were like the deaf and mute. It was not within the share of their wisdom, and their practice remained at the stage of ordinary beings, entirely unprocessed like milk.

For these reasons, although the sudden teaching comes first, it may be called clarified essence and may also be called milk. The angles upon which the two names depend can be understood from the preceding discussion.

Opening the Gradual from the Sudden Takes Only Successive Arising

Next comes opening the gradual. The Buddha originally intended to bring sentient beings across through the Great Vehicle. When they could not bear it, he considered skillful means and traveled to Vārāṇasī, distinctly teaching the Three Vehicles within the path of the One Vehicle. This is the opening of the Tripiṭaka Teaching.

It was not only Śākyamuni Buddha who concealed his immeasurable spiritual virtues and undertook such gradual transformation. Buddhas of past and present likewise did so. From the passages cited above, one knows that the initial sudden teaching was followed by the opening of the gradual.

The Nirvāṇa Sūtra therefore says that from the Buddha are born the twelve divisions of scripture and from the twelve divisions of scripture is born sūtra. This directly accords with the present meaning. It is like milk coming from a cow and curds coming from milk; the simile is not inconsistent. Those of gradual faculties had not yet changed within the sudden teaching and remained wholly raw like milk. Only within the Tripiṭaka Teaching did they change, shedding the ordinary and accomplishing the noble, like milk becoming curds. This is successive arising and is called the teaching of the second period. The simile does not take thickness or thinness of flavor, nor superiority or inferiority among teachings. The evidentiary passage from “Skillful Means” ends here.

At this point Part One of Fascicle Ten of the Fahua Xuanyi ends. Part Two of Fascicle Ten follows and continues to bear the attribution “taught by Tiantai Master Zhiyi.”

The Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings First Lists the Teaching Sequence as a Whole

The Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings is next cited as evidence. Its meaning is that the Buddha, with the Buddha-eye, contemplates all dharmas, which cannot be expressed in words. Why? Because sentient beings differ in their dispositions and desires.

Because dispositions and desires differ, the Buddha teaches Dharma in various ways. The wording employed is one, but the meanings expressed differ; because the meanings differ, sentient beings understand differently; because their understanding differs, the Dharma, fruit, and path they attain also differ.

At first the Buddha taught the Four Truths for those seeking to become śrāvakas, while eight hundred million gods descended to hear the Dharma and aroused the mind of awakening. In the middle, he taught the profound twelve links of dependent origination in various places for those seeking pratyekabuddhahood. Next, he taught the twelve divisions of Vaipulya scripture, Mahāprajñā, and the oceanic emptiness of the Avataṃsaka, explaining the bodhisattvas’ practice over successive kalpas. Hundreds of thousands of bhikṣus and immeasurable sentient beings aroused the mind of awakening, some remained as śrāvakas, myriads of koṭis of humans and gods attained stream-entry through arhatship, and some remained as pratyekabuddhas.

“The Buddha-eye contemplates all dharmas” indicates that the sudden Dharma came first; the Four Truths and twelve links of dependent origination are the gradual teaching that opened next.

According to this passage, after the Tripiṭaka Teaching had been completed, the twelve divisions of Vaipulya scripture were taught next. The Buddha taught the great after the small because he had originally intended to bestow the great, but sentient beings could not bear it. He therefore provisionally drew the small out of the great, enabling them to sever their bonds and accomplish the noble. Although this was a genuine benefit, it was still not the Buddha’s original intent.

Next he taught the Vaipulya, Vimalakīrti, Questions of Brahmā Viśeṣacintin, and Aṅgulimālīya Sūtra, reproaching the Lesser Vehicle’s partiality in protecting the fruit it had attained and criticizing the Tripiṭaka Teaching’s error of annihilationism. Śāriputra and Subhūti had practiced the small exclusively according to the preceding teaching and initially had never heard of the Great Vehicle’s majestic virtues. Some bewilderedly abandoned their bowls; some fearfully tried to reject the heavenly flowers. They did not know what the other person was saying and did not know how to answer.

Vaipulya reproach came after the Tripiṭaka Teaching, while the events in which they were reproached should have occurred before the twelfth year. How can this be known? The scriptures all recount former reproaches retrospectively, proving that these were earlier events. They had already received the teaching and attained the path, realized the stage beyond training, deeply borne the Buddha’s kindness, and come to trust and understand one another, so they no longer became angry when reproached. From that earlier time to the present, they freely submitted to Aṅgulimāla’s ridicule and Vimalakīrti’s rebukes, finally gaining the benefit of being ashamed of the small and aspiring to the great. This is like cooking curds to produce raw ghee.

According to the Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings, one can know that Vaipulya follows the Tripiṭaka Teaching and is the teaching of the third period.

Why Does Prajñā Follow Vaipulya?

According to the Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings, Mahāprajñā, the oceanic emptiness of the Avataṃsaka, and practice over successive kalpas were taught next; this means that the Large Prajñāpāramitā was taught after Vaipulya.

The Large Prajñāpāramitā sometimes teaches impermanence and no-self, sometimes emptiness, and sometimes non-arising and non-extinction. It proceeds from form and mind all the way to the knowledge of all modes, turning every sentence repeatedly to clarify the Dharma of practice. This is the meaning of practice over successive kalpas.

The scripture further says that hundreds of thousands of bhikṣus and myriads of koṭis of humans and gods attained stream-entry through arhatship or remained as pratyekabuddhas. This confirms that it is prajñā shared by the Three Vehicles.

As for “the oceanic emptiness of the Avataṃsaka,” if it were interpreted as the Avataṃsaka initially taught at the quiescent place of the path, it would not fit the sequence here. The Treatise on Dharma-nature is therefore followed in saying that bodhisattvas of dull faculties enter the Dharma realm in three places: first in Prajñā, second in the Lotus, and third in Nirvāṇa. Entering the Dharma realm through Prajñā is precisely the oceanic emptiness of the Avataṃsaka.

There is another meaning. The duration of the Avataṃsaka teaching was long; those of lesser faculties had not entered it in the past and were like the deaf and mute, but on hearing Prajñā now they could enter. This too is precisely the present meaning. The Large Prajñāpāramitā extends to people of the Three Vehicles and can therefore speak of the four fruits. The Avataṃsaka excludes those of lesser faculties, and hence does not have this meaning.

Prajñā was therefore taught after Vaipulya and is the teaching of the fourth period.

How Does the Perfect and Sudden Reappear after Refined Ghee?

It is further called the flavor of refined ghee because the śrāvakas were commanded to relay the Prajñā teaching for bodhisattvas and came to take charge of and know the various Dharma gates. Their minds gradually became open and at ease. They knew that their own firefly light could not equal sunlight, while their feeling of reverence and submission matured still further. This is like raw ghee becoming refined ghee.

“The oceanic emptiness of the Avataṃsaka is clarified after Prajñā” can further be explained as referring to the perfect and sudden Lotus teaching. Why? When the Buddha first accomplished the path, he purely taught the perfect and sudden. Those who did not understand had not yet developed sufficiently great faculties. After being tempered through the Tripiṭaka, Vaipulya, and Prajñā teachings, their faculties matured, their obstructions were removed, and they became able to hear the perfect and sudden. The Buddha then taught the Lotus, opening the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing and enabling them to enter the Dharma realm, on a level with the Avataṃsaka. These are the people described by the Treatise on Dharma-nature as entering through the Lotus in the middle.

The following passage therefore means that those who first saw the Buddha’s body and heard the Buddha’s teaching immediately entered the Tathāgata’s wisdom, while those who now heard this scripture entered the Buddha’s wisdom. The Buddha-wisdom attained at first and later is alike in its perfect and sudden meaning. Therefore, the oceanic emptiness of the Avataṃsaka taught after Prajñā is on a level with the Lotus and is also the teaching of the fifth period.

Why Are the Lotus and Nirvāṇa Both Clarified Essence?

Clarified essence is further mentioned because it is the final flavor after all the other flavors. The Nirvāṇa Sūtra calls it clarified essence, while the present scripture calls it the great king’s feast. One therefore knows that both scriptures are clarified essence.

After the Buddha Sun-Moon-Lamp Radiance finished teaching the Lotus Sutra, he announced at midnight that he would enter nirvāṇa. In that buddha’s full course of transformation, he first taught the Avataṃsaka and last taught the Lotus. The same was true at the time of Kāśyapa Buddha: the Nirvāṇa Sūtra was not separately elucidated, and the Lotus was treated as the final teaching and final flavor.

During Śākyamuni Buddha’s course of transformation, he first matured an earlier batch of people and made the Lotus their clarified essence. To mature a later batch, he tempered them again through Prajñā before enabling them to enter Nirvāṇa, and made the Nirvāṇa their final teaching and final flavor.

This is like a farming family: what is sown first ripens and is harvested first, while what is sown later ripens and is harvested later. The eight thousand śrāvakas and immeasurable bodhisattvas who diminished birth in the Lotus assembly were fruits that had matured earlier. They were harvested in the Lotus and had nothing further to do. The five thousand who rose and left on their own and the humans and gods who were moved elsewhere matured later and were harvested in the Nirvāṇa.

It is therefore said that great nirvāṇa emerges from Mahāprajñā; this is the sequence for the later batch. The Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings says that the oceanic emptiness of the Avataṃsaka follows Mahāprajñā; this is the sequence for the earlier batch that matured in the Lotus.

Someone asks: How do we know that those of dull faculties did not enter through the Lotus and had to be tempered through Prajñā again?

The answer is that the Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom asks why Subhūti again inquired whether bodhisattvas were certain or not certain. It answers that Subhūti had heard in the Lotus that bodhisattvas received predictions of buddhahood, but now, in Prajñā, again asked whether they were certain or not certain. One should therefore know that Prajñā was taught again after the Lotus.

The First Stage of “Faith and Understanding”: The Urgent Pursuit of the Poor Son, Like Milk

The third passage cited is the “Faith and Understanding” chapter. The four great śrāvakas received and understood the teaching, using it to establish this sequence.

The scripture first says that the poor son’s father had arrived here long before and stopped in a city after failing to find his son. His family was extremely wealthy, with many servants, ministers, assistants, officials, and people. The poor son happened upon his father’s residence but ran away as soon as he saw it. The father immediately sent someone to pursue him urgently and bring him back. The poor son was startled and shouted in grievance, thinking that he was being imprisoned though innocent and would certainly die. The father therefore told the messenger that he did not need this man and should not force him to come.

What meaning does this receive and understand? It receives and understands that when the Buddha first accomplished the path, at the quiescent place of the path he was surrounded by a retinue of Dharma-body great beings of the forty-one stages and taught the perfect and sudden teaching gate. At that time the Buddha intended the great Dharma for the poor son, but the son’s faculties caused him to faint. One therefore knows that when the Buddha-sun first rose, the sudden teaching opened first, just as milk necessarily comes first from a cow.

The Second Stage: Secretly Sending Men to Clear Away Dung, Like Curds

Next, the elder wished to entice and guide his son. Through skillful means, he secretly sent two men whose appearance was haggard and who possessed no imposing virtue, telling them to go and slowly tell the poor son that he could be hired to clear away dung. The elder also removed his jeweled necklace and changed into filthy, greasy clothes. Through this skillful means, he was able to approach his son.

What meaning does this receive and understand? It receives and understands that after the sudden teaching, the Buddha concealed Vairocana’s majestic virtues and excellent marks, manifested the appearance of an old bhikṣu, and taught the Tripiṭaka Teaching. For twenty years he constantly had the poor son clear away dung and receive one day’s wage. This is sūtra emerging after the twelve divisions of scripture. At that time the delusions of views and thought were severed and the uncontaminated mind purified, like curds emerging from milk.

The Third Stage: Going Out and Entering without Difficulty, Like Raw Ghee

After more time had passed, the father and son came to trust and understand one another, and there was no difficulty in going out or entering; nevertheless, the son’s dwelling remained in its original location.

What meaning does this receive and understand? It clarifies that Vaipulya was taught next after the Tripiṭaka Teaching. People of the Two Vehicles had already attained the fruit of the path, and father and son trusted and understood one another. Hearing the great Dharma is called entering, while remaining in the small Dharma is called going out. Enduring severe verbal reproach is called being without difficulty.

The household simile gives another explanation. Advancing inward into the residence is called entering. There one sees ministers and powerful clans and great meritorious powers, hears the Jewel-Torch Dhāraṇī, and sees the supernormal transformations of inconceivable liberation, and hence it is called entering. Going out and continuing to stay in the grass hut, remaining within the sphere of the Two Vehicles, is called going out.

Their trusting and understanding one another means that after attaining arhatship they did not become angry even when reviled. Inwardly ashamed, they did not dare to transform others through the Dharma of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas. Their minds gradually matured, like curds becoming raw ghee. This is called the Vaipulya scriptures emerging from sūtra and is the teaching of the third period.

The Fourth Stage: Taking Charge of and Knowing the Goods, Like Refined Ghee

At that time the elder became ill and knew that he would soon die. He told the poor son that he possessed much gold, silver, and precious treasure and that the storehouses were full; the son was to manage how much there was and what should be taken or given. The poor son accepted the command and took charge of and came to know all the goods, yet had no thought of desiring to take even one meal. His dwelling still remained in its original location.

What meaning does this receive and understand? It clarifies that Prajñā was taught after Vaipulya. Prajñā’s contemplative wisdom is the family estate; proceeding from name-and-form all the way to knowledge of modes is the collection of goods. Subhūti and the others being commanded to relay the teaching is their taking charge of and knowing it. They taught it only for the bodhisattvas and did not themselves practice and realize it, and hence had no intention of taking it for themselves. This is Mahāprajñā emerging from the Vaipulya scriptures.

Through this they came to know the Dharma gates of the great beings and removed their lack of knowledge. This is like raw ghee becoming refined ghee and is the teaching of the fourth period.

The Fifth Stage: Assembling the Relatives and Entrusting the Estate, Like Clarified Essence

After a little more time, the father knew that his son’s mind had gradually become open and at ease. As he approached death, he summoned his son, assembled the relatives, and personally announced that this truly was his son and he truly the father; everything he now possessed belonged to the son. The father entrusted the family estate to him, and the poor son rejoiced greatly, attaining what he had never had before.

What meaning does this receive and understand? It clarifies that the Lotus was taught after Prajñā. The son had previously been made to take charge of and know every item in the treasury. Nothing further needed to be explained; the estate only had to be directly entrusted to him.

This is like the preceding relaying of the teaching: the śrāvakas already knew the various Dharma gates, so now there was no need to present the contemplations again. The grass hut only had to be demolished, the one great cart bestowed, and predictions of future buddhahood given. Is this not clearly seeing buddha-nature and abiding in great nirvāṇa? It is therefore said that great nirvāṇa emerges from Mahāprajñā. At this time ignorance is broken, the principle of the Middle Way is revealed, and their minds become lucid and pure like clarified essence. This is clarified essence emerging from refined ghee and is the teaching of the fifth period.

Gathering Two Batches and the Shared Flavor of the Two Scriptures

This set of teachings through the five flavors first matures one group of sentient beings of gradual faculties, such as Śāriputra and the other great śrāvakas, enabling them to receive predictions of buddhahood in the Lotus, see the Tathāgata-nature, and accomplish the great fruit. Like the autumn harvest and winter storage, they have nothing further to do. This is what the root treatise calls “non-arising that does not arise,” named great nirvāṇa. This is the earlier batch, in which the Wondrous Dharma Lotus emerges from Mahāprajñā.

Those who have not matured enter Nirvāṇa through Prajñā and see buddha-nature. This is the later batch, in which great nirvāṇa again emerges from Prajñā.

Nevertheless, the teaching intents of the Lotus and Nirvāṇa have the same structure in the beginning and end of their main teaching. The three cycles of teaching in the Lotus settle the śrāvakas decisively and bring them all back to the one real. Later the scripture opens the nearby to reveal the distant and clarifies the affairs of bodhisattvas.

The Nirvāṇa is likewise so. It first teaches the superior three cultivations, settles the śrāvakas decisively, and brings them into the secret treasury. Afterward, the thirty-six questions clarify the affairs of bodhisattvas.

As the Buddha approached extinction, the Nirvāṇa further supported the Tripiṭaka Teaching and admonished and restrained the future, causing those of dull faculties in the latter age not to give rise to annihilationist views within buddhadharma. It broadly opened the purport of permanence, broke these inversions, and caused buddhadharma to abide for a long time. These functions make the teaching intents of the two scriptures different; but as the fifth flavor, clarified essence, their flavor of buddha-nature is the same.

義疏Exposition

As Part One of Fascicle Ten turns into Part Two, Guanding preserves both the fascicle title and the attribution “taught by Tiantai Master Zhiyi.” The continuous teaching concentrates on three questions. Since the Buddha initially intended to teach the Great Vehicle directly, why did he later distinctly teach the Three Vehicles? Why can the same initial sudden teaching be compared both to milk and to clarified essence? Since the Lotus and Nirvāṇa are both the final flavor, why must they still be divided into an earlier and a later batch?

Zhiyi takes three scriptural passages that mutually supply what the others lack. “Skillful Means” reveals the turn from the sudden to opening the gradual. The Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings supplies the middle sections after that turn. “Faith and Understanding” transforms the entire process into the long simile of father and son recognizing one another and the family estate being entrusted. Read together, the sequence of the scriptures reveals a process in which sentient beings mature from being unable to bear the teaching to being able to receive, know, and attain it.

Why Was the Initial Intention to Teach the Great Turned into Distinctly Teaching Three?

“Skillful Means” first places the Buddha’s two directions within one process of reflection. The wisdom attained by the Buddha was subtle, wondrous, and foremost, and he originally intended sentient beings to enter it directly. Seeing that sentient beings’ faculties were dull and recalling the skillful means practiced by past buddhas, he decided to distinctly teach the Three Vehicles within the path of the One Vehicle.

“First sat at the place of the path” reveals the sudden teaching. When the Buddha descended from Tuṣita Heaven, his Dharma-body retinue accompanied him like dark clouds enclosing the moon. Within his mother’s womb he constantly taught the wondrous Dharma, continuing until he first accomplished complete awakening at the quiescent place of the path and first taught the Great Vehicle purely for the bodhisattvas, like the newly risen sun first illuminating the high mountains. “First illuminating” reveals the higher and lower capacities of sentient beings to receive the light and the sequence in which they do so.

The same turn is repeatedly revealed through three sets of scenes. The present Buddha emits light from between his brows: first the buddhas are seen teaching bodhisattvas, and afterward nirvāṇa is taught for those who suffer. Past buddhas first extensively expound the profound Dharma, and afterward there are innumerable assemblies of śrāvakas. Śākyamuni Buddha likewise says that those who first saw the Buddha and heard the Dharma could enter the Tathāgata’s wisdom, while those who had previously studied the Lesser Vehicle later heard this scripture and entered the Buddha’s wisdom. Teaching the sudden first and the gradual afterward thus becomes the common sequence in which the great Dharma meets different faculties.

Why Does One Initial Sudden Teaching Have the Two Names Milk and Clarified Essence?

The initial sudden teaching is addressed to Dharma-body bodhisattvas, while ordinary beings of great faculties can also receive it. Those who awaken immediately through the perfect and sudden teaching realize the ultimate and are like clarified essence. Those who are only beginners hear the great teaching but have just entered the ten faiths; this is the beginning of practice and is like milk. The two names respectively answer “How deep is what is attained?” and “Where has the journey reached?”

Among those receiving the teaching, some have both vehicle and discipline urgent, while others have discipline relaxed and the vehicle urgent. Great faculties such as these cannot reach the Buddha’s assembly by themselves; they must accompany the Buddha as response-born beings and enter the seven places and eight assemblies. From the standpoint of the teacher, when the Buddha newly accomplished complete awakening, the blood of ignorance and the other delusions had already transformed into illumination. The eighty thousand Dharma treasuries and twelve divisions of scripture were inherently present in the Dharma-body and flowed forth first in response to the stimulation of great faculties.

Pure milk is already present within a cow that has newly given birth; once the calf makes the sound 『𡂡』, the mother cow lets down milk. Great faculties stimulating the Buddha are like the calf, and the Buddha suddenly teaching the great Dharma is like the mother cow letting down milk. Here milk means initial and fundamental. The forbearance grass causing a cow to produce clarified essence means that what great faculties stimulate and what the perfect response teaches can directly reach the ultimate flavor. The same sudden teaching is called milk according to its being the beginning of the teaching and clarified essence according to the ultimate principle. Viewed through practice, those who break ignorance and attain the forbearance of non-arising are like clarified essence; those just establishing practice and people of lesser faculties who have not yet changed are like milk.

The two names of the initial sudden teaching are therefore not two names accidentally superimposed. “Sudden” is established according to the Dharma and “milk” according to flavor; the root treatise uses each in accordance with the meaning of its immediate context.

Milk Producing Curds Means Successive Arising, Not Thickness and Thinness

When sentient beings could not bear the great Dharma the Buddha originally intended to bestow, he traveled to Vārāṇasī and distinctly taught the Three Vehicles within the path of the One Vehicle. The great Dharma remained the Buddha’s original intent in giving, while the Three Vehicles became an entrance through which sentient beings could at that time sever their bonds and accomplish the noble.

From the Buddha are born the twelve divisions of scripture, and from the twelve divisions of scripture is born sūtra. This is like milk coming from a cow and curds from milk. Those of gradual faculties had not yet changed within the sudden teaching and remained entirely raw like milk. Within the Tripiṭaka Teaching, they shed the ordinary and accomplished the noble, like milk changing into curds. The passage expressly takes only the successive arising of earlier and later; it does not use thickness or thinness of flavor as a basis for classifying the teaching by superiority and inferiority.

This also changes how skillful means is understood. If skillful means is seen only as a lower answer, one cannot see that it begins to transform those unable to advance. If it is made a permanent destination, one cannot see that milk will in turn produce curds. Successive arising preserves both the benefit of the present moment and the road that continues afterward.

How Does the Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings Supply the Three Middle Stages?

The second scriptural passage begins from sentient beings’ differing dispositions and desires. The dharmas contemplated by the Buddha-eye cannot be expressed, while sentient beings’ dispositions, desires, and understanding all differ. The same transformation therefore produces different understanding and different attainments of Dharma, fruit, and path in different people.

At first the Four Truths are taught for those seeking to become śrāvakas; in the middle the twelve links of dependent origination are taught for those seeking pratyekabuddhahood; later the twelve divisions of Vaipulya scripture, Mahāprajñā, and the oceanic emptiness of the Avataṃsaka are taught, revealing the bodhisattvas’ practice over successive kalpas. This long list also reveals faculties intermingling: when the Four Truths are taught, some gods already arouse the mind of awakening; when the later great Dharma is taught, some still remain as śrāvakas or pratyekabuddhas. The teachings have a sequence, while each being’s benefit follows their faculties.

The Tripiṭaka Teaching enables people to sever their bonds and accomplish the noble, which is already a real benefit, but it is still not the Buddha’s original intent to bestow the great. Vaipulya therefore follows attainment of the fruit by reproaching partiality that clings to the fruit. When Subhūti faces Vimalakīrti’s question, he bewilderedly sets down his bowl and wishes to leave. Śāriputra tries to remove the heavenly flowers from his body but cannot. Aṅgulimāla ridicules, and Vimalakīrti subdues. These scenes cause those who attained the fruit no longer to treat their attainment as the whole. Having already received the Buddha’s kindness and come to trust one another, they can endure reproof without anger, turn from curds into raw ghee, and gain the benefit of being ashamed of the small and aspiring to the great.

Prajñā then transforms this aspiration into the ability to know the great Dharma. From form and mind all the way to the knowledge of all modes, impermanence, no-self, emptiness, and non-arising and non-extinction are turned repeatedly sentence by sentence, and all are Dharmas of practice. The śrāvakas are commanded to relay the teaching and can teach it for bodhisattvas; their minds gradually become open and at ease. They are like someone who takes charge of and knows the goods in a storehouse, knowing how much the estate contains and how goods are to be taken or given, but not yet intending to take any for themselves. This is raw ghee becoming refined ghee.

Why Does “Oceanic Emptiness of the Avataṃsaka” Appear after Prajñā?

If these four words referred only to the Avataṃsaka initially taught at the quiescent place of the path, they would not fit the present sequence. Zhiyi first cites the Treatise on Dharma-nature, which says that bodhisattvas of dull faculties enter the Dharma realm in three places—Prajñā, the Lotus, and Nirvāṇa—to explain that entering the Dharma realm through Prajñā can also be called the oceanic emptiness of the Avataṃsaka.

He further speaks in terms of faculties. The duration of the Avataṃsaka teaching was long, but those of lesser faculties had not entered in the past. They were formerly like the deaf and mute; now, on hearing Prajñā, they had the capacity to enter. The Large Prajñāpāramitā extends to people of the Three Vehicles and can therefore speak of the four fruits; the Avataṃsaka excludes those of lesser faculties and does not have the same scene of the four fruits. Read together, the “oceanic emptiness of the Avataṃsaka” after Prajñā means that people who formerly could not enter now attain entry into the Dharma realm.

Viewed from the following section, the reopening of the perfect and sudden after Prajñā is the Lotus. Faculties have been tempered and matured through the Tripiṭaka, Vaipulya, and Prajñā teachings, their obstructions removed, and they are now able to hear the perfect and sudden. Entering the Tathāgata’s wisdom when the Buddha first accomplished the path and entering the Buddha’s wisdom later upon hearing the Lotus are alike in their perfect and sudden meaning. The same perfect and sudden light becomes manifest later as the faculties of those receiving it mature.

If Both Are Clarified Essence, Why Are the Lotus and Nirvāṇa Divided into Two Batches?

The Lotus is called the great king’s feast and the Nirvāṇa clarified essence; both scriptures come after all the other flavors. After the Buddha Sun-Moon-Lamp Radiance taught the Lotus, he entered nirvāṇa at midnight. At the time of Kāśyapa Buddha, the Nirvāṇa likewise was not separately elucidated and the Lotus was treated as the final teaching and final flavor. In all these conditions of transformation, the Lotus serves as the final teaching and final flavor.

The sentient beings transformed by Śākyamuni Buddha, however, include those who mature earlier and those who mature later. The earlier-maturing receive predictions and see the Tathāgata-nature in the Lotus, like a field sown first that ripens and is harvested first. The five thousand who rose and left on their own and the humans and gods moved elsewhere are like late-sown crops that have not matured. They must still be tempered again through Prajñā and gathered in through the Nirvāṇa. The two batches are like one farmer facing two sets of crops that mature at different times and harvesting each according to when it ripens.

The question and answer on certainty directly establishes the later batch. Subhūti had already heard in the Lotus that bodhisattvas received predictions of buddhahood, yet later, within Prajñā, still asked whether bodhisattvas were certain or not certain. Zhiyi sees in this that, after the Lotus, there remained space for teaching Prajñā again to those who had not entered. Transformation does not end because the earlier batch has already been harvested.

How Does One Household Reveal All Five Stages of Maturation?

The “Faith and Understanding” chapter transforms the teaching sequence in the preceding two scriptural passages into the distance between father and son.

In the first scene, the poor son happens upon his father’s residence and runs as soon as he sees its wealth. The father sends someone to pursue him urgently; startled, the son shouts, thinking that he is being imprisoned though innocent, and even faints. The father can only order his release. This is like the sudden teaching first opening at the quiescent place of the path: the Buddha intends the great Dharma for those of lesser faculties, but they are unable to bear it. The sun has risen and first illuminates the high mountains; for the poor son, this is still only the initial milk.

In the second scene, the father secretly sends two haggard men without imposing virtue to hire the son slowly to clear away dung. The father himself removes his jeweled necklace and puts on filthy clothes before he can approach. This is like the Buddha concealing Vairocana’s majestic virtues and excellent marks, manifesting the appearance of an old bhikṣu, and having people clear away dung for twenty years in return for a day’s wage. The delusions of views and thought are severed and the uncontaminated mind purified, like milk becoming curds.

In the third scene, father and son trust and understand one another and go out and enter without difficulty, yet the son still stays in his original location. Hearing the great Dharma is entering, remaining in the small Dharma going out, and undergoing severe reproach without anger being without difficulty. Entering the residence and seeing ministers and powerful clans, great meritorious powers, the Jewel-Torch Dhāraṇī, and the supernormal transformations of inconceivable liberation is also entering; returning to the grass hut and remaining in the sphere of the Two Vehicles is going out. The distance has narrowed, but the dwelling has not changed, like curds becoming raw ghee.

In the fourth scene, the father gives his son responsibility for the gold, silver, precious jewels, and full storehouses. The son can take charge of and know how much there is and what should be taken or given, yet has no intention of taking even one meal. Prajñā’s contemplative wisdom is the family estate, while name-and-form through knowledge of modes are the goods. Subhūti and the others can relay the teaching to bodhisattvas but have not yet practiced and realized it themselves. Being able to know without yet personally possessing is the mature position of refined ghee.

In the fifth scene, before the relatives the father declares their relation as father and son and transfers the entire family estate to him. Since the son previously took charge of and knew all the goods, they need not be explained again. The grass hut only has to be demolished, the one great cart bestowed, and a prediction of buddhahood given. Ignorance is broken and the Middle Way revealed; the poor son rejoices at attaining what he never had before, like pure clarified essence emerging from refined ghee.

The five scenes always revolve around the same father, the same son, and the same household. The distance the son can bear and his relation to the family estate gradually change. First he sees and flees, then he is hired; later he can enter and leave and manage the estate; only at the end does he learn that he has always been the son of the household.

If the Two Scriptures Share One Flavor, Why Do Their Teaching Intents Still Differ?

Those who mature earlier enter the Lotus through Prajñā, while those who mature later enter the Nirvāṇa through Prajñā again. Both see buddha-nature and are therefore clarified essence. The main teaching of the Lotus first returns the śrāvakas to the one real, then reveals buddhahood attained in the distant past and clarifies bodhisattva matters. The Nirvāṇa likewise first uses the superior three cultivations to bring the śrāvakas into the secret treasury, then clarifies bodhisattva matters through the thirty-six questions. Viewed from the first and last parts of the main teaching, the beginning and end of the two scriptures correspond.

As the Buddha approaches extinction, however, the Nirvāṇa must also restate discipline and admonish the future, preventing those of dull faculties in the latter age from producing annihilationist views upon hearing emptiness and quiescence. It extensively clarifies permanent abiding, breaks inversions, and causes buddhadharma to abide for a long time. This is the distinct intent the Nirvāṇa bears in facing the future.

Their shared flavor therefore lies in ultimate buddha-nature, while their distinct intent lies in safeguarding the Dharma as extinction approaches. A farming family harvests at different times, and a family estate is entrusted in stages. The fruit ultimately matured is the same, while those who mature later are still cared for through a complete method.

Through the Eye of the Shiqian

In the Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian, Zhanran first says that the three passages establish the three major outlines, then distinguishes what each passage covers. “Skillful Means” takes the movement from the sudden to the Deer Park; the Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings supplies the Vaipulya and Prajñā after the Deer Park; and “Faith and Understanding” gathers the first two passages. The wording and meaning of the first two illuminate one another, while the last encompasses beginning and end. Thus, although the three passages are few, they illuminate the opening and closing of an entire course of transformation.

For the three periods of seven days in “Skillful Means,” the Mirror first lists several old explanations, then marks the present master’s intent. The three periods successively represent the three cycles of Dharma exposition, exposition through simile, and exposition through causes and conditions. Applied generally to the Great Vehicle, they also represent intents to teach the Perfect, Distinct, and Shared Teachings, for which in each case there were no responsive faculties, so the Buddha ceased the great and administered the small. This judgment reads the number of days as a structure of teaching and does not combine the divergent views listed alongside it into a single chronology.

The initial sudden teaching’s two names, milk and clarified essence, are further viewed through faculties and conditions, the transforming lord, teaching flavor, and practice. Because it is great it is called sudden; because it is initial it is called milk. From the Buddha’s standpoint it is always sudden; from the ultimate principle realized by practitioners it is clarified essence; from the beginning of great practice and the lack of transformation in lesser faculties it is milk. In the Mirror’s light, the two names reveal criteria of observation rather than canceling one another.

In the section on the Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings, the Mirror first distinguishes the initial great followed by the small and the initial small followed by the great, then unfolds Vaipulya, Prajñā, and the Lotus. Vaipulya has six levels: the purport of the class, those reproached, time, the intent of reproach, the benefit attained, and the conclusion on the period. Prajñā preserves both shared and unshared aspects. Concerning the “oceanic emptiness of the Avataṃsaka,” one route explains it through the Dharma realm, while another uses the Avataṃsaka’s long duration to extend it into later periods. Both routes are coherent, and so both are retained.

The Mirror likewise illuminates the five stages of “Faith and Understanding” one by one. First seeing the father’s residence and fleeing reveals the initial sudden teaching being intended for those of lesser faculties. Secretly sending two men to clear away dung reveals concealing the great and administering the small. Going out and entering without difficulty while still staying in the original location reveals entering the great and going out to the small within Vaipulya. Taking charge of and knowing the goods without intending to take them reveals being able to know without personally attaining within Prajñā. Father and son recognizing one another and the estate being transferred to the son reveals the Lotus’s opening and revelation. The five stages follow one relation between father and son, making “encompassing beginning and end” present in every step from inability to bear the estate, through the growing ability to enter, leave, and know it, to personally receiving the estate.

Concerning the Lotus and Nirvāṇa, Zhanran first distinguishes their shared flavor from the different conditions they transform, then uses the question and answer on certainty to illuminate Prajñā for the later batch. The five stages of “Faith and Understanding” continuously present the sequence of Avataṃsaka, Deer Park, Vaipulya, Prajñā, and Lotus within one simile. Finally, “beginning” is defined as the first part of the main teaching and “end” as its final part, explaining the shared flavor through correspondence between the two scriptures’ structures.

This Mirror ultimately preserves two points. Each of the three passages has an irreplaceable task, and the same clarified essence allows for different conditions of transformation. At the closing sentence, the sameness of the Lotus and Nirvāṇa no longer means that the two scriptures are without any difference. It means that the earlier- and later-maturing both see buddha-nature, while the Buddha still preserves a complete road for those who mature later. Shared flavor is spoken of from the buddha-nature seen; the earlier and later batches are spoken of from the sequence of maturation. Both levels stand together.

This unit uses three scriptural passages—the “Skillful Means” chapter, the Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings, and the “Faith and Understanding” chapter—to establish the three preceding major outlines of the sudden, gradual, and indeterminate. The first passage proceeds from the initial sudden teaching to the opening of the gradual. The second supplies the sequence of the Vaipulya, Prajñā, and Lotus teachings after the Deer Park. The third uses the parable of the poor son to receive and understand in detail the five flavors from beginning to end. The close further distinguishes the Lotus Sutra and the Nirvāṇa Sūtra as both clarified essence while maintaining differences in whom they transform first or later and in the intent of safeguarding the Dharma.

1. Doctrinal-Outline Placement

This unit begins with 「二、引三文證者,所謂〈方便品〉、《無量義經》、〈信解品〉也。」 tr. “Second, citing three passages as evidence: namely, the ‘Skillful Means’ chapter, the Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings, and the ‘Faith and Understanding’ chapter”〔T33 0806c27〕 and ends with 「第五醍醐,佛性味同也。」 tr. “As the fifth, clarified essence, the flavor of buddha-nature is the same”〔T33 0809a10〕. On the same line, the text then begins a separate section, 『約五味半滿相成』 tr. “the mutual accomplishment of the five flavors and half and full,” which is not included in this unit. The main text crosses from Fascicle Ten, Part One, into Fascicle Ten, Part Two; at the fascicle boundary it retains the title attribution 「妙法蓮華經玄義卷第十下天台智者大師說」 tr.Profound Meaning of the Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma, Fascicle Ten, Part Two, taught by Tiantai Master Zhiyi”〔T33 0807b25〕.

The Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian (T1717) marks the entrance to the unit with 「次引文者,證三大綱。」 tr. “Next, the cited passages establish the three major outlines”〔T33 0957c29〕 and gives an overall judgment of the three passages’ functions: 「所以引三文者,〈方便品〉法說,文義顯者。 tr. “The reason for citing three passages is that the ‘Skillful Means’ chapter gives a Dharma exposition whose wording and meaning are clear; the Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings recounts the opening again and provides the reason for combining; and the ‘Faith and Understanding’ chapter receives in detail the five flavors from beginning to end, leaving neither past and present nor provisional and real incomplete”〔T33 0958a01〕. It further says that the first two passages illuminate one another and the last gathers the beginning and end. The “Skillful Means” chapter principally takes the movement from the sudden to the Deer Park; the Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings principally takes the Vaipulya and Prajñā after the Deer Park; and the “Faith and Understanding” chapter gathers both preceding passages〔T33 0958a06–a10〕.

Following the treatise’s own movement, the whole passage can be divided into nineteen sections: 1. the general identification of the three passages; 2. the citation of the verse from “Skillful Means”; 3. supporting evidence from present buddhas, past buddhas, and the bodhisattvas emerging from the earth; 4. the initial sudden teaching receiving the two names milk and clarified essence according to faculties and teaching flavor; 5. a further distinction between the two names according to practice; 6. opening the gradual and successive arising; 7. the general citation from the Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings; 8. Vaipulya as the third period; 9. Prajñā as the fourth period; 10. the Lotus as the fifth period; 11. the Lotus and Nirvāṇa sharing one flavor while forming two batches; 12. the question and answer on certainty; 13–17. the five stages of the “Faith and Understanding” chapter receiving milk, curds, raw ghee, refined ghee, and clarified essence in sequence; 18. the general conclusion on the two batches; and 19. the two scriptures having the same beginning and end but different teaching intents. No markers shifting to the recorder’s voice, such as 『私謂』 tr. “I privately say” or 『今謂』 tr. “I now say,” appear in the whole passage. The doctrinal main text is therefore read, according to the title attribution, as Zhiyi’s teaching recorded by Guanding; the fascicle-boundary attribution belongs only to the fascicle structure and does not establish a separate doctrinal section.

2. Formation and Transmission

Guanding’s own account of the treatise’s origins records, 「次在江陵,奉蒙玄義」 tr. “Next, at Jiangling, I reverently received the Profound Meaning”〔T33 0681a16〕, and further says, 「聿遵聖典,書而傳之,《玄》、《文》各十卷。」 tr. “Accordingly following the sacred teaching, I wrote it down and transmitted it; the Profound Meaning and the Words and Phrases each comprised ten fascicles”〔T33 0681a22〕. A later record in the Guoqing Bailu (T1934) reads, 「造玉泉寺。 tr. “He built Yuquan Monastery; Zhang’an reverently received the Profound Meaning”〔T46 0823b28〕. This unit is therefore still read through the transmission layers of teaching at Yuquan and transcription by Guanding. Hearing the teaching at Jiangling is anchored in the treatise’s own prefatory account, while Yuquan Monastery is collateral evidence from the later record; each location remains tied to its own witness rather than one locus being made to carry the wording of the other.

This unit crosses Part One and Part Two of Fascicle Ten, but this is a division within the same fascicle, not a separate occasion of teaching or a change of author. The attribution continues to state that Master Zhiyi taught it. Guanding preserves the fascicle boundary together with the sequence of citing scripture, explaining scripture, questions and answers, and similes.

3. Scriptures and Treatises Cited by Zhiyi

The items below are listed in the order in which they appear in the treatise. Each first preserves the form written in the Fahua Xuanyi (T1716), then gives the relevant received scripture or treatise. Identical wording, excerpt, differing graph, differing order, and scene-level summary are separately marked; the received text is not used to alter the wording in the root treatise.

“Skillful Means” and Opening the Gradual from the Initial Sudden Teaching

tr. “When I first sat at the place of the path, I contemplated the tree and also walked in meditation. During three periods of seven days I considered this matter: the wisdom I have attained is subtle, wondrous, and foremost, but sentient beings’ faculties are dull—how can they be brought across? I would rather not teach the Dharma and quickly enter nirvāṇa. Then I recalled the skillful power practiced by past buddhas: as for the path I have now attained, I too should teach the Three Vehicles”〔T33 0806c29〕The first part in the Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma (T0262) reads, 「我始坐道場,觀樹亦經行,於三七日中,思惟如是事,我所得智慧,微妙最第一。 “When I first sat at the place of the path, I contemplated the tree and also walked in meditation. During three periods of seven days I considered this matter: the wisdom I have attained is subtle, wondrous, and foremost. Sentient beings’ faculties are dull, attached to pleasures and blinded by delusion; how can beings such as these be brought across?”〔T09 0009c04〕. tr. “I would rather not teach the Dharma and quickly enter nirvāṇa. Then I recalled the skillful power practiced by past buddhas: as for the path I have now attained, I too should teach the Three Vehicles”〔T09 0009c16〕.『如此/如是』 tr. “this/such” differ. The root treatise omits the lines on attachment to pleasure, blindness through delusion, and the intervening request to teach, combining the material into one citation.
tr. “The Buddha emitted light from between his brows, illuminating eighteen thousand lands in the east, where they beheld the lions among sacred lords expounding the scriptural Dharma, subtle, wondrous, and foremost, and teaching the bodhisattvas”〔T33 0807a09〕. It then separately cites 「若人遭苦」 tr. “If people encounter suffering”〔T33 0807a11〕 and 「為說涅槃,盡諸苦際。」 tr. “He teaches nirvāṇa for them, exhausting the limits of all suffering”〔T33 0807a11〕.The Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma separately reads, 「眉間光明,照于東方,萬八千土,皆如金色」 tr. “The light from between his brows illuminated eighteen thousand lands in the east, all like the color of gold”〔T09 0002c14〕; 「又覩諸佛、聖主師子、演說經典,微妙第一。 “They further beheld the buddhas, lions among sacred lords, expounding the scriptures, subtle, wondrous, and foremost; their voices were pure, sending forth gentle sounds as they taught the bodhisattvas”〔T09 0002c18〕; and 「若人遭苦,厭老病死,為說涅槃,盡諸苦際。」 tr. “If people encounter suffering and are weary of aging, illness, and death, he teaches nirvāṇa for them, exhausting the limits of all suffering”〔T09 0002c23〕.The root treatise compresses a single long verse, omitting several descriptions and 『厭老病死』 tr. “weary of aging, illness, and death.”
tr. “They further saw the tathāgatas naturally accomplishing the Buddha-path. The World-Honored Ones, amid the great assembly, extensively expounded profound meanings of the Dharma”〔T33 0807a13〕, followed by 『一一諸佛土,聲聞眾無數』 tr. “In every buddha land, the assemblies of śrāvakas were innumerable.”The Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma reads, 「又見諸如來,自然成佛道,身色如金山,端嚴甚微妙。 “They further saw the tathāgatas naturally accomplishing the Buddha-path, their bodies colored like golden mountains, upright, majestic, and exceedingly subtle and wondrous. Like an image of true gold appearing within pure beryl, the World-Honored Ones, amid the great assembly, extensively expounded profound meanings of the Dharma. In every buddha land, the assemblies of śrāvakas were innumerable”〔T09 0004c12〕.The root treatise omits the two similes of the golden mountain and beryl, preserving the sequence from profound Dharma to assemblies of śrāvakas.
tr. “So it is! So it is! Sentient beings are easy to bring across. When they first saw my body and heard what I taught, they all immediately accepted it in faith and entered the Tathāgata’s wisdom. Excepted were those who had earlier cultivated and studied the Lesser Vehicle; people such as these I now also enable to hear this scripture and enter the Buddha’s wisdom”〔T33 0807a16〕.The Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma first reads, 「如是,如是! tr. “So it is, so it is! Good men, the Tathāgata is at ease, with little illness and little affliction; these sentient beings are easy to transform and bring across, without fatigue”〔T09 0040b04〕. tr. “When these sentient beings first saw my body and heard what I taught, they all immediately accepted it in faith and entered the Tathāgata’s wisdom, except those who had earlier cultivated and studied the Lesser Vehicle. People such as these I now also enable to hear this scripture and enter the Buddha’s wisdom”〔T09 0040b08〕.The root treatise omits the form of address and words of inquiry after health and combines the earlier and later passages into one citation.
tr. “They have no means of arriving by themselves; they must be response-born and led into the seven places and eight assemblies”〔T33 0807a25〕.The Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian distinguishes 「舊經七處八會,新譯更加普光明殿一會」 tr. “the old translation’s seven places and eight assemblies; the new translation further adds one assembly in the Hall of Universal Radiance”〔T33 0956c29〕. The old sixty-fascicle translation of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra (T0278) begins, 「一時,佛在摩竭提國寂滅道場始成正覺」 tr. “At one time, the Buddha was in the land of Magadha at the quiescent place of the path, having just accomplished complete awakening”〔T09 0395a07〕.『七處八會』 tr. “seven places and eight assemblies” belongs to the old sixty-fascicle translation, not generically to the new eighty-fascicle translation.
“Like the sun when it first rises, first illuminating the high mountains”〔T33 0807a08〕.The Avataṃsaka Sūtra reads, 「復次,佛子! tr. “Further, child of the Buddha, it is like the rising sun, which first illuminates all kings of great mountains, next all great mountains, next the adamantine jewel mountains, and only afterward universally illuminates the whole great earth”〔T09 0616b14〕.The root treatise gathers the simile of the rising sun first illuminating great mountains; its wording is not completely identical.
“The great teaching was intended for those of lesser faculties, but they were like the deaf and mute; it did not fall within their share of wisdom”〔T33 0807b08〕.The Avataṃsaka Sūtra expressly says, 「一切聲聞、緣覺不聞此經,何況受持、書寫、解說,無有是處。」 tr. “No śrāvaka or pratyekabuddha hears this scripture; how much less could they receive and uphold, copy, or explain it—there is no such possibility”〔T09 0630a09〕.The received text establishes the scene in which śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas do not hear; 『如聾如瘂』 tr. “like the deaf and mute” is the root treatise’s simile and classification.
tr. “Great faculties strike upon the Buddha, like the forbearance grass; the perfect response teaches suddenly, like producing clarified essence”〔T33 0807a25〕.The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra (T0374) reads, 「善男子! tr. “Good man, in the Snow Mountains there is a grass called forbearance; if a cow eats it, it produces clarified essence”〔T12 0525c25〕.The framework of the simile agrees; the root treatise interprets it as great faculties stimulating the Buddha and the Buddha responding with the sudden teaching.
tr. “From the Buddha come the twelve divisions of scripture; from the twelve divisions comes sūtra”〔T33 0807b16〕.The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra gives the complete sequence, 「善男子! tr. “Good man, the Buddha is likewise so: from the Buddha are born the twelve divisions of scripture; from the twelve divisions of scripture comes sūtra; from sūtra come the Vaipulya scriptures; from the Vaipulya scriptures comes the perfection of prajñā; and from the perfection of prajñā comes great nirvāṇa, like clarified essence”〔T12 0449a09〕.Here the root treatise excerpts the beginning of the chain. Its first clause lacks the graph 『生』 tr. “are born,” and its second clause lacks the graph 『經』 tr. “scripture” after 『十二部』 tr. “the twelve divisions.” The latter end of the chain is separately taken up below.

The Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings, Vaipulya, and Prajñā

tr. “With the Buddha-eye I contemplate all dharmas, which cannot be expressed. Why? Sentient beings differ in their dispositions and desires”〔T33 0807b28〕.The Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings (T0276) reads, 「善男子! tr. “Good man, ever since I sat upright for six years beneath the bodhi tree at the place of the path and accomplished unsurpassed complete awakening, with the Buddha-eye I have contemplated all dharmas, which cannot be expressed. Why? Because sentient beings differ in their dispositions and desires”〔T09 0386a26〕.The root treatise omits the preceding sentence on accomplishing the path. “all dharmas/all the dharmas” differ, as does the presence or absence of a second 『以』 tr. “because.”
tr. “At first he taught the Four Truths for those seeking to become śrāvakas, while eight hundred million gods descended to hear the Dharma and aroused the mind of awakening. In the middle, in place after place, he taught the profound twelve links of dependent origination for those seeking pratyekabuddhahood. Next he taught the twelve divisions of Vaipulya scripture, Mahāprajñā, and the oceanic emptiness of the Avataṃsaka, expounding the bodhisattvas’ practice over successive kalpas; hundreds of thousands of bhikṣus and immeasurable sentient beings aroused the mind of awakening, or remained as śrāvakas, while myriads of koṭis of humans and gods attained stream-entry through arhatship or remained as pratyekabuddhas”〔T33 0807c03〕.The Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings reads, 「善男子! tr. “Good man, at first I taught the Four Truths for those seeking to become śrāvakas, while eight hundred million gods descended to hear the Dharma and aroused the mind of awakening. In the middle, in place after place, I expounded the profound twelve links of dependent origination for those seeking pratyekabuddhahood, while immeasurable sentient beings aroused the mind of awakening or remained as śrāvakas. Next I taught the twelve divisions of Vaipulya scripture, Mahāprajñā, and the oceanic cloud of the Avataṃsaka, expounding the bodhisattvas’ practice over successive kalpas; hundreds of thousands of bhikṣus, myriads of koṭis of humans and gods, and immeasurable sentient beings attained stream-entry, once-return, non-return, and arhatship, or remained in the Dharma of conditions for pratyekabuddhahood”〔T09 0386b21〕.『說/演說』 tr. “teach/expound,” 『支佛/辟支佛』 tr. “pratyekabuddha/pratyekabuddha,” and 『海空/海雲』 tr. “oceanic emptiness/oceanic cloud” differ. The placement of the groups of people, the listing of the four fruits, and the sentence ending also differ.
“Some, bewildered, abandoned their bowls”〔T33 0807c16〕.The Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa Sūtra (T0475) reads, 「時我——世尊!——聞此語茫然,不識是何言? tr. “At that time, World-Honored One, when I heard these words I was bewildered, did not understand what was being said, and did not know how to answer; I set down my bowl and wished to leave his house”〔T14 0540c12〕.The root treatise uses 『棄鉢』 tr. “abandoned the bowl” to gather the scene of Subhūti setting down his bowl and wishing to leave.
“Some, frightened, tried to reject the flowers”〔T33 0807c16〕.The Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa Sūtra first reads, 「即以天華散諸菩薩、大弟子上。 tr. “She scattered heavenly flowers over the bodhisattvas and great disciples. When the flowers reached the bodhisattvas they immediately fell away, but when they reached the great disciples they adhered and did not fall. All the disciples used their supernormal power to remove the flowers, but could not make them go”〔T14 0547c24〕; later it says, 「如是弟子畏生死故,色、聲、香、味、觸得其便也。」 tr. “Because disciples such as these fear birth-and-death, form, sound, scent, taste, and touch gain an opening”〔T14 0548a04〕.The root treatise gathers inability to remove the flowers and fear of birth-and-death into four graphs.
14The root treatise lists the Questions of Brahmā Viśeṣacintin as an example of Vaipulya reproach〔T33 0807c13〕.In the Questions of Brahmā Viśeṣacintin Sūtra (T0586), Jālinīprabha questions, 「無量法終不作有量。 “Immeasurable Dharma never becomes measurable. Why, sir, do you say wisdom has a measure?”〔T15 0043b12〕. Śāriputra afterward remains silent and does not answer. The person, the challenge, the śrāvaka’s being refuted, and his silence all agree; the root treatise does not cite this sentence verbatim.
“They freely submitted to Aṅgulimāla’s ridicule”〔T33 0807c21〕.The Aṅgulimālīya Sūtra (T0120) reads, 「嗚呼舍利弗,修習蚊蚋行,不能分別知,真實智慧義,陋哉蚊蚋慧,無知宜默然。」 tr. “Alas, Śāriputra, practicing the conduct of mosquitoes and gnats, you cannot distinguish and know the meaning of real wisdom. Wretched is the wisdom of mosquitoes and gnats; knowing nothing, you should remain silent”〔T02 0524a22〕.The root treatise writes 『殃掘』, while the received title and name write 『央掘』. The scene of ridicule can be directly located.
“They heard the Jewel-Torch Dhāraṇī”〔T33 0808c01〕.The Mahāvaipulya Mahāsaṃnipāta Sūtra (T0397) reads, 「佛言:『善男子! tr. “The Buddha said: ‘Good man, there is a dhāraṇī named Jewel Torch. A bodhisattva who abides in this dhāraṇī can retain the names of all buddhas and explain them distinctly for sentient beings in accordance with sentient beings’ various languages’”〔T13 0025c03〕.The scripture title, the dhāraṇī name, and the scene agree; 『方等』 tr. “Vaipulya” itself remains a class name.
“The Large Prajñāpāramitā sometimes teaches impermanence and no-self, sometimes emptiness, and sometimes non-arising and non-extinction; in every case it proceeds through form and mind to the knowledge of all modes, turning the wording repeatedly in sentence after sentence to clarify the Dharma of practice”〔T33 0807c26〕.The Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra (T0223) reads, 「菩薩摩訶薩行般若波羅蜜,觀色無常相,是亦不可得。 tr. “When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva practices the perfection of prajñā, the characteristic of impermanence contemplated in form is also unobtainable. The characteristics of suffering, no-self, emptiness, signlessness, wishlessness, quiescent extinction, and separation contemplated in form are also unobtainable; the same applies to feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness”〔T08 0240b04〕. tr. “When a bodhisattva-mahāsattva practices the perfection of prajñā, form does not combine with sarvajñā, because form cannot be seen; the same applies to feeling, perception, formations, and consciousness”〔T08 0223b29〕, and 「是諸法空相,不生不滅、不垢不淨、不增不減。」 tr. “The empty characteristics of these dharmas neither arise nor cease, are neither defiled nor pure, and neither increase nor decrease”〔T08 0223a15〕.The root treatise summarizes a recurring sentence pattern; it is not one continuous sentence in the received text.
“The Large Prajñāpāramitā extends to people of the Three Vehicles and therefore can include the four fruits”〔T33 0808a06〕.One example in the Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra reads, 「令得須陀洹果、斯陀含果、阿那含果、阿羅漢果,乃至令得無餘涅槃,當學般若波羅蜜。」 tr. “To enable them to attain the fruit of stream-entry, the fruit of once-return, the fruit of non-return, the fruit of arhatship, and even nirvāṇa without remainder, one should train in the perfection of prajñā”〔T08 0220a08〕.The received text expressly lists the four fruits. 『共般若』 tr. “shared prajñā” remains the root treatise’s classification, not a chapter title in the scripture.
19The citation from the Treatise on Dharma-nature reads, 「鈍根菩薩三處入法界,初則《般若》,次則《法華》,後則《涅槃》。」 tr. “Bodhisattvas of dull faculties enter the Dharma realm in three places: first in the Prajñā, next in the Lotus, and last in the Nirvāṇa”〔T33 0808a03〕.A scene-level search has located only retellings in the root treatise, historical records, and later commentaries, but no independently established received text of the Treatise on Dharma-nature.The referent remains under investigation. This does not establish that the original treatise did not exist, nor does it elevate a later commentary into the original treatise.

The Two Batches of the Lotus and Nirvāṇa

No.Wording in the XuanyiReceived-text comparisonRelationship
“This scripture is called the great king’s feast”〔T33 0808a20〕.The Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma reads, 「如從饑國來,忽遇大王饍,心猶懷疑懼,未敢即便食」 tr. “As if coming from a country afflicted by famine and suddenly encountering a great king’s feast, their minds still harbor doubt and fear, and they do not yet dare to eat at once”〔T09 0021a06〕.The root treatise takes the simile’s name from the scripture to describe this scripture’s flavor.
tr. “After the Buddha Lamp Radiance finished teaching the Lotus Sutra, he immediately announced that he would enter nirvāṇa at midnight”〔T33 0808a21〕.The Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma first reads, 「如來於今日中夜,當入無餘涅槃。』」 tr. “The Tathāgata will enter nirvāṇa without remainder at midnight today”〔T09 0004b01〕, and later reads, 「佛授記已,便於中夜、入無餘涅槃。」 tr. “After the Buddha had given predictions, he entered nirvāṇa without remainder at midnight”〔T09 0004b05〕.The scene and sequence agree; the root treatise gathers the announcement and entry into nirvāṇa.
tr. “At the time of Kāśyapa Buddha it was likewise so: the Nirvāṇa was not separately elucidated, and in every case the Lotus served as the final teaching and final flavor”〔T33 0808a23〕.The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra first asks, 「迦葉如來有是經不?」 tr. “Did the Tathāgata Kāśyapa have this scripture?”〔T12 0472a18〕, and later answers, 「一切眾生悉知如來終不畢竟入於涅槃,常住不變。 tr. “All sentient beings knew that the Tathāgata would ultimately never enter nirvāṇa but would permanently abide without change. Although this scripture existed, it did not need to be expounded”〔T12 0472b29〕.The received text does not say that the scripture did not exist, but that the scripture existed and did not need to be expounded. The root treatise’s 『不明』 tr. “not elucidated” must be kept within this scene.
23The root treatise lists 『八千聲聞』 tr. “immeasurable bodhisattvas who diminished birth,” 『五千自起』 tr. “five thousand who rose and left on their own,” and 『人天被移』 tr. “humans and gods who were moved elsewhere”〔T33 0808a27–b01〕.The Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma separately contains, 「復有學、無學八千人、得受記者」 tr. “There were also eight thousand trainees and those beyond training who received predictions”〔T09 0036a07〕; 「會中有比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷五千人等,即從座起,禮佛而退。」 tr. “Within the assembly were five thousand bhikṣus, bhikṣuṇīs, upāsakas, and upāsikās who immediately rose from their seats, bowed to the Buddha, and withdrew”〔T09 0007a07〕; 「唯留此會眾,移諸天人置於他土。」 tr. “He left only the assembly gathered here and moved the gods and humans to other lands”〔T09 0033a13〕; and 「六百八十萬億那由他恒河沙眾生,得無生法忍」 tr. “Sentient beings numbering six hundred eighty myriads of koṭis of nayutas of Ganges sands attained the forbearance of non-arising dharmas”〔T09 0044a09〕.The eight thousand, five thousand, and moving of humans and gods can be directly cross-read. “bodhisattvas who diminished birth” is a stage-summary term used by the root treatise.
“The Great Treatise says: Why did Subhūti again ask whether bodhisattvas were certain or not certain?”〔T33 0808b05〕.The scriptural passage in the Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom (T1509) asks, 「世尊! “World-Honored One, are these bodhisattva-mahāsattvas certain, or are they not certain?”〔T25 0712c20〕. The treatise passage asks, 「阿鞞跋致即是畢定,須菩提今何以更問?」 tr. “Nonretrogression is itself certainty; why does Subhūti now ask again?”〔T25 0713b16〕. It also cites words from the Lotus Sutra, 「於佛所作少功德,乃至戲笑一稱南無佛,漸漸必當作佛。」 tr. “Those who have made even a little merit in relation to a buddha, even those who in jest once say ‘Homage to the Buddha,’ will gradually and certainly become buddhas”〔T25 0713b26〕, and concludes 『是故今問為畢定、為不畢定』 tr. “therefore he now asks whether they are certain or not certain.”The structure of the question and answer agrees with the root treatise. Establishing a later batch from it is the Tiantai reading.

The Five Stages in “Faith and Understanding” and the Conclusion on the Two Scriptures

No.Wording in the XuanyiReceived-text comparisonRelationship
tr. “There is no need for this man; do not force him to come”〔T33 0808b14〕.The Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma reads, 「父遙見之,而語使言:『不須此人,勿強將來。 tr. “The father saw him from afar and told the messenger: ‘There is no need for this man; do not force him to come. Sprinkle cold water on his face so that he revives, and do not speak to him again’”〔T09 0016c29〕.The root treatise excerpts the father’s words releasing the son after the urgent pursuit.
“He secretly sent two men whose appearance was haggard and who possessed no imposing virtue”〔T33 0808b19〕, and also reads, 「即脫纓珞,著垢膩衣」 tr. “He immediately removed his jeweled necklace and put on a filthy, greasy robe”〔T33 0808b20〕.The Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma reads, 「密遣二人,形色憔悴無威德者」 tr. “He secretly sent two men whose appearance was haggard and who possessed no imposing virtue”〔T09 0017a08〕 and 「即脫瓔珞、細軟上服、嚴飾之具,更著麁弊垢膩之衣」 tr. “He immediately removed his jeweled necklace, fine soft upper garments, and ornaments, and instead put on a coarse, worn, filthy, greasy robe”〔T09 0017a15〕.『纓珞/瓔珞』 are differing graph forms for “jeweled necklace”; the root treatise abridges the garments and ornaments.
tr. “After still more time had passed, their minds mutually trusted and understood one another, and there was no difficulty in going out or entering; nevertheless, the place where the son stayed remained in his original location”〔T33 0808b25〕.The Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma reads, 「過是已後,心相體信,入出無難,然其所止猶在本處。」 tr. “After this time had passed, their minds mutually trusted and understood one another, and there was no difficulty in entering or going out; nevertheless, the place where the son stayed still remained in his original location”〔T09 0017a27〕.『出入/入出』 tr. “going out and entering/entering and going out” differ, together with several particles.
tr. “The poor son accepted the command and took charge of and came to know all the goods, yet had no thought of desiring to take even one meal; nevertheless, the place where he stayed remained in his original location”〔T33 0808c09〕.The Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma reads, 「爾時窮子,即受教勅,領知眾物,金銀珍寶及諸庫藏,而無悕取一飡之意。 “At that time the poor son immediately accepted the instruction and command and took charge of and came to know all the goods—the gold, silver, precious jewels, and all the treasuries—yet had no thought of desiring to take even one meal. Nevertheless, the place where he stayed remained in his original location”〔T09 0017b04〕.『餐/飡』 are differing graph forms for “meal”; the received text additionally includes gold, silver, precious jewels, and other goods.
tr. “After a little more time had passed, the father knew that the son’s mind had gradually become open and at ease. When he was about to die, he summoned his son and assembled the relatives, then personally declared: ‘This truly is my son, and I truly am his father. Everything I now possess belongs to the son.’ He entrusted the family estate to him, and the poor son rejoiced, attaining what he had never had before”〔T33 0808c16〕.The Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma first reads, 「復經少時,父知子意漸已通泰,成就大志,自鄙先心。 “After a little more time had passed, the father knew that the son’s mind had gradually become open and at ease, that he had accomplished a great resolve, and that he disdained his former mind. When he was about to die, he summoned his son and assembled the relatives, king, ministers, kṣatriyas, and householders”〔T09 0017b07〕. tr. “This truly is my son, and I truly am his father. All the wealth and goods I now possess belong to the son; the son already knows what was formerly paid out and taken in”〔T09 0017b13〕, and then says that the poor son greatly rejoiced〔T09 0017b15〕.The root treatise abridges the assembled people and uses 『付以家業』 tr. “entrusted the family estate to him” to summarize the transfer of the wealth to the son; those four graphs are not a verbatim phrase in the received text.
“The Nirvāṇa is likewise so: first it teaches the superior three cultivations, decisively settles the śrāvakas, and brings them into the secret treasury”〔T33 0809a05〕.The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra reads, 「是三種修,無有實義。 “These three kinds of cultivation possess no real meaning. I will now teach the Dharma of the superior three cultivations”〔T12 0377b25〕, and also reads, 「我今當令一切眾生,及以我子四部之眾,悉皆安住祕密藏中,我亦復當安住是中,入於涅槃。」 tr. “I will now cause all sentient beings and my children, the fourfold assembly, all to abide securely in the secret treasury. I too will abide securely therein and enter nirvāṇa”〔T12 0376c09〕.The superior three cultivations and the secret treasury can be located verbatim; 『斷奠聲聞』 tr. “settling the śrāvakas decisively” is the root treatise’s structural classification.
“As the Buddha approached extinction, the Nirvāṇa further supported the Tripiṭaka Teaching and admonished and restrained the future, causing those of dull faculties in the latter age not to give rise to annihilationist views regarding buddhadharma”〔T33 0809a07〕.The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says, 「汝於戒律,有所疑者,今恣汝問,我當解說,令汝心喜。」 tr. “If you have any doubts concerning the disciplinary rules, you may now freely ask; I will explain them and cause your minds to rejoice”〔T12 0379a13〕. It also says, 「若言如來祕藏空寂,凡夫聞之,生斷滅見;有智之人應當分別,如來是常、無有變易。」 tr. “If one says that the Tathāgata’s secret treasury is empty and quiescent, ordinary beings who hear this will produce annihilationist views. A wise person should distinguish that the Tathāgata is permanent and undergoes no change”〔T12 0410c16〕.The disciplinary question and answer and the prevention of annihilationist views can both be located. 『扶三藏』 tr. “supported the Tripiṭaka Teaching” is Tiantai’s overall classification.
“Non-arising that does not arise is called great nirvāṇa”〔T33 0808c29〕.The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra gives within one question and answer, 「不生不生亦不可說」 tr. “Non-arising that does not arise also cannot be expressed”〔T12 0490b23〕 and 「不生者名為涅槃,涅槃不生故不可說!」 tr. “What does not arise is called nirvāṇa; because nirvāṇa does not arise, it cannot be expressed”〔T12 0490b29〕.The root treatise combines the two sentences; the received text does not contain the continuous six-graph short form.

『方等』 tr. “Vaipulya” is a class name for a group of teachings in the root treatise and is not forcibly tied to a single canon number. Within it, the scenes from the Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa Sūtra, the Questions of Brahmā Viśeṣacintin Sūtra, the Aṅgulimālīya Sūtra, and the Jewel-Torch Dhāraṇī have each been assigned to their own source. The citation from the Treatise on Dharma-nature is expressly recorded as having a referent under investigation.

4. Essential Explanations from the Shiqian [the Mirror]

The Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian first divides the three passages into three functions. “Skillful Means” reveals the opening of the gradual from the sudden; the Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings supplies the Vaipulya and Prajñā after the Deer Park; and “Faith and Understanding” uses the poor-son parable to gather the beginning and end. The first two passages therefore illuminate one another, while the last encompasses the beginning and end〔T33 0958a01–a10〕.

In explaining “Skillful Means,” Zhanran first separates the various masters’ divergent explanations of the three periods of seven days from the present master’s intent. The present master’s intent is, 「今明三七意有所表,表三周也。」 tr. “The three periods of seven days now indicate something: they indicate the three cycles”〔T33 0958a27〕. The first seven indicate the Dharma exposition, the second the exposition through simile, and the third the exposition through causes and conditions. If applied generally to the Great Vehicle, they also successively indicate an intent to teach the Perfect, Distinct, and Shared Teachings, for which in each case there were no responsive faculties, so that the Buddha finally ceased the great and administered the small〔T33 0958a28–b03〕. This is a classification through symbolic indication; it does not fix the three periods of seven days as a single exclusive historical chronology.

The Shiqian unfolds why the initial sudden teaching is called both milk and clarified essence through five levels: faculties and conditions, the transforming lord, teaching flavor, practice, and concluding intent〔T33 0958b10–b23〕. From the Buddha’s standpoint it is always sudden; from the ultimate principle realized by those of great faculties it is called clarified essence; and from the beginning of great practice, the lack of transformation in lesser faculties, and the beginning of the five flavors it is called milk. In the simile for opening the gradual, only successive arising is taken. The Shiqian expressly says that the passage 『不取濃淡』 tr. “does not take thickness or thinness,” its intent being, 「秖是小機於華嚴如乳非酪,濃於華嚴。」 tr. “It is simply that, for those of lesser faculties, the Avataṃsaka is like milk rather than curds; the curds are richer for them than the Avataṃsaka”〔T33 0958b27〕.

In explaining the Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings, Zhanran first distinguishes the great followed by the small and the small followed by the great, then unfolds the three parts of Vaipulya, Prajñā, and the Lotus〔T33 0958b28–c05〕. The Vaipulya portion is further divided into six topics: the purport of the class, those reproached, time, intent, benefit, and conclusion on the period. The Prajñā portion preserves both shared and unshared aspects. Concerning 『華嚴海空』 tr. “the oceanic emptiness of the Avataṃsaka,” it preserves both the route through the meaning of the Dharma realm and the route through the Avataṃsaka’s long duration extending into later periods: 「二義俱通,是故兩存。」 tr. “Both meanings are coherent; therefore both are retained”〔T33 0958c25〕.

The Lotus and Nirvāṇa share one flavor while transforming different conditions. The Shiqian uses the Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom’s question and answer on certainty to explain the later-maturing batch that still passed through Prajñā again before entering Nirvāṇa〔T33 0959a01–a15〕. In “Faith and Understanding,” the five stages of the parable fully traverse beginning and end. The close explains the two scriptures’ shared flavor through their having the same beginning and end: “beginning” means 「正說初分」 tr. “the first part of the main teaching”〔T33 0959b01〕, while “end” means 「正說末分」 tr. “the final part of the main teaching”〔T33 0959b01〕. The beginning and end of the Lotus’s main teaching correspond to the Nirvāṇa’s four stages of administration, meaning, practice, and function, without erasing the Nirvāṇa’s distinct intent of supporting discipline and breaking annihilationist views.

5. Explanations of Various Masters

The Qing-dynasty master Zhiquan’s Fahua Jing Xuanqian Zhengshi (X0592) gives a direct, passage-by-passage commentary. tr. “The first two passages illuminate one another: the ‘Skillful Means’ passage lacks the end, while the Immeasurable Meanings passage lacks the beginning, and hence they are said to illuminate one another. The later statement that the last encompasses beginning and end means that the ‘Faith and Understanding’ passage receives in detail the five flavors from beginning to end, and therefore encompasses beginning and end”〔X 0631a20〕. It further explains successive arising through both faculties and teaching〔X 0631b24〕, organizes “going out and entering without difficulty” through the three aspects of faculties, teaching, and simile〔X 0631c08〕, and explains in sequence the two scriptures’ same beginning and end and the four sections of the Nirvāṇa〔X 0631c09–c18〕. These are later explanations and are not retrojected as sentences from the root treatise.

The Shanjia master Zhili’s Guanyin Yishu Ji (T1729) directly says, 「應知約教明五味者,不取濃淡,但語相生,以其頓乳即醍醐故。」 tr. “One should know that when the five flavors are explained according to the teaching, thickness and thinness are not taken; only successive arising is discussed, because the milk of the sudden teaching is itself clarified essence”〔T34 0952c11〕. It further says that those of great faculties first see and immediately enter the Buddha’s wisdom, while those of lesser faculties must be gradually led; both entry at first and entry now are the Buddha’s wisdom〔T34 0952c24–c27〕. Of the later batch, it separately says, 「故法華後復談般若調熟其心,令於涅槃得醍醐味。」 tr. “Therefore, after the Lotus, Prajñā is taught again to mature their minds and cause them to attain the flavor of clarified essence in the Nirvāṇa”〔T34 0952c29〕. It then separately explains the superior three cultivations through the three categories of wrong, inferior, and superior〔T34 0953a03–a08〕.

The Shanwai master Zhiyuan’s Niepan Jing Shu Sande Zhigui (X0662) explicitly identifies the conditions of the two batches, saying that the earlier batch was tempered through Prajñā and matured in the Lotus, while the later batch was still tempered through Prajñā and matured in the Nirvāṇa〔X 0509c17–c20〕. It also records the root treatise’s question and answer on certainty in sequence〔X 0509c23〕. It says that the names and meanings of the Lotus and Nirvāṇa differ while their transforming intent is equivalent, and explains the distinction in teaching intent through the Nirvāṇa’s extensive discussion of permanence and continuing need to support discipline〔X 0509c14〕. Each of these three bodies of material records its own account; they are not used to adjudicate between Shanjia and Shanwai.

6. Terminology

The three passages and three major outlines. The three passages are the “Skillful Means” chapter, the Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings, and the “Faith and Understanding” chapter. What they establish are the preceding major outlines of the sudden, gradual, and indeterminate. The three passages divide their work according to the range each covers; they are not three identical pieces of evidence.

Initial sudden teaching and opening the gradual. The initial sudden teaching means that, when first seated at the place of the path, the Buddha first taught the Great Vehicle for those of great faculties. Opening the gradual means that those unable to bear it had to be guided through skillful means as the Three Vehicles were distinctly taught within the path of the One Vehicle. The two are connected through sentient beings’ faculties and the sequence in which they received the Dharma.

Milk, curds, raw ghee, refined ghee, and clarified essence. This unit takes the sequence of successive arising—milk from a cow, curds from milk, and so forth. The initial sudden teaching can be called clarified essence according to the ultimate principle realized, and milk according to the teaching’s beginning, practice’s beginning, and the fact that lesser faculties had not yet changed. The two names for one teaching are established according to different criteria.

Seven places and eight assemblies. This refers to the structure of places and assemblies in the old translation of the Avataṃsaka Sūtra. In this passage it describes the great faculties’ being response-born and entering the Avataṃsaka assemblies; it is not the name of a later comprehensive classification.

Oceanic emptiness of the Avataṃsaka. This is the graph form that appears twice in the root treatise; the received Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings reads 『華嚴海雲』 tr. “oceanic cloud of the Avataṃsaka.” The root treatise interprets it on one side through the meaning of the Dharma realm and on another through the Avataṃsaka’s long duration, when lesser faculties had not entered in the past but could now enter through Prajñā. Each graph form and each route of interpretation remains in its own place.

Shared and unshared prajñā. The aspect heard in common by the Three Vehicles, including the four fruits, is called shared; the aspect in which one enters the Dharma realm through Prajñā and which communicates with the Avataṃsaka is called unshared. These are classifications in the root treatise, not chapter titles in the Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra.

Two batches. Those who matured earlier entered and were gathered in through the Lotus after Prajñā; those who matured later did not enter through the Lotus and passed through Prajñā again before entering Nirvāṇa. The two batches are distinguished according to when those transformed matured; they do not mean that everyone must pass through Prajñā twice.

Going out and entering without difficulty. The root treatise first takes hearing the great as entering, remaining in the small as going out, and undergoing severe verbal reproach as being without difficulty. It then takes advancing into the residence to see ministers and powerful clans as entering, and staying in the grass hut as going out. Both readings unfold from the poor-son parable.

Beginning and end. “Beginning” is the first part of the main teaching, and “end” the final part. Saying that the two scriptures have the same beginning and end means that the structures of their main teachings correspond in bringing śrāvakas back to the real and then taking up bodhisattva matters; it does not mean that all the contents of the two scriptures are identical.

Superior three cultivations, decisive settlement, and supporting the Tripiṭaka Teaching. The superior three cultivations and secret treasury can be located in the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra. Decisively settling the śrāvakas and supporting the Tripiṭaka Teaching are the root treatise’s classifications of the structure of the main teaching and the function of safeguarding the Dharma as extinction approaches. The closing sentence preserves both the “difference in teaching intent” and the “same flavor of buddha-nature.”

7. Similes · Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward

This unit runs one chain of successive arising through the three passages. The rising sun first illuminates high mountains, revealing that those of great faculties are taught first. The forbearance grass causes a cow to produce clarified essence, revealing that great faculties stimulate the Buddha and receive his sudden response. A newborn cow’s blood changes into milk, and when the calf makes the sound 『𡂡』 the cow lets down milk, revealing that when the Buddha first attained complete awakening the Dharma treasury was fully present and those of great faculties received it first. Milk changing into curds reveals that those of lesser faculties, previously unchanged, shed the ordinary and accomplished the noble. Together these similes explain the sequence in which the Dharma is received, while expressly excluding thickness, thinness, superiority, and inferiority as the criterion.

The farming family’s early sowing, early ripening, and early harvest, followed by late sowing, late ripening, and late harvest, states the conditions of the Lotus and Nirvāṇa’s two batches most clearly. Those who matured earlier harvested the fruit in the Lotus; those who matured later passed through Prajñā again and were gathered in through the Nirvāṇa. Both are maturation, but they need not be harvested on the same day.

The “Faith and Understanding” chapter turns the five stages of transformation into five scenes within one household: an urgent pursuit causes the poor son to faint, and the father first releases him; the father secretly sends two men, removes his ornaments, and puts on a filthy robe so that the son can approach and clear away dung; the two mutually trust one another while the son still stays in his original location; the son accepts the command to manage the goods but has no intention of taking even one meal for himself; and finally the father assembles the relatives, declares their relation, and transfers everything to his son. The persons in the simile, their clothing, the family estate, and the sequence all serve the process of maturation from inability to bear the estate to receiving it.

Read together with the Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma, “Skillful Means” provides the Dharma exposition that opens the gradual from the sudden, while “Faith and Understanding” uses persons and receipt of the family estate to encompass the process. Read together with the Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings, the intermediate sequence of Vaipulya and Prajñā is supplied. Read together with the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, the successive arising of the milk flavors, the forbearance grass, the superior three cultivations, the secret treasury, and prevention of annihilationist views each has its own scriptural scene. As the discussion carries forward into the next topic, its focus turns from establishing the teaching through three passages to how the five flavors and half and full mutually accomplish one another.

8. Placement of the Editions

First, this unit takes T33n1716 as its base. It begins at 0806c27 and ends with the final sentence on the characteristics of the teaching at 0809a10; the new section continuing on the same line is not included. The title of Fascicle Ten, Part One, ends at 0807b22; the attribution for Fascicle Ten, Part Two, begins at 0807b25, and the main text resumes at 0807b28.

Second, no main-text variant note from the Taishō edition occurs within the element range of this unit. The preceding adjacent variant anchor is at 0804b21 and the following one at 0810b03; neither is moved into the present section. The graph 「𡂡」 tr. “a calf’s call”〔T33 0807a29〕 is a restored missing-character form, not an entry recording a variant reading.

Third, the root treatise’s scriptural citations frequently excerpt, combine, or summarize meaning. “oceanic emptiness/oceanic cloud of the Avataṃsaka,” 『纓珞/瓔珞』 “jeweled necklace” with differing initial graphs, 『出入/入出』 tr. “going out and entering/entering and going out,” and 『餐/飡』 “meal” in differing graph forms each remain with their own source. The boundaries of the referent of the Treatise on Dharma-nature and the class name 『方等』 tr. “Vaipulya” are explicitly recorded and are not forcibly assigned.

Fourth, each page anchor is the nearest line number in the same edition preceding the first graph of the quotation. When multiple quotations occur on the same line, each receives the anchor of its own first graph. Fascicle-boundary attributions, the opening anchor of a long passage, and an outer introductory phrase do not replace the opening anchor of a short quotation.
