Why do people remain lost when the jewel is in their clothing and the road is not far? Because having does not mean knowing, and nearness does not mean recognizing the direction.
The drunken person already has a precious jewel fastened inside his clothing but is wholly unaware of it in the wine of ignorance. The lost traveler is not far from the treasure place but describes the nearby road as long. The private preface states the difficulty of sentient beings precisely: we not only seek outside for what we already have; by mistaking the direction, we also imagine an attainable place to be forever beyond reach.
The Buddha's compassion therefore does not stuff another jewel from outside into sentient beings, but awakens them. Nor does he move the treasure place closer; he enables them to see the road clearly. The four flowers and six quakings, transformation of the lands, emergence from the earth, opening the gate of skillful means, and showing the ground of the real all serve one purpose: universally enabling everyone to see and hear.
Nor is the sutra title a signboard hanging beside the road. “Wondrous” is the opening of the secret and profound treasury; “Dharma” is the showing of the correct tracks of the provisional and the real; “lotus” is the original fruit in the remote past; “flower” is gathering into nonduality; and “sutra” is accomplishing the Buddha's work through sound. Every graph of the name presents one aspect of how the Buddha awakens the deluded and points out the place of return.
In the end, the sutra is called the gate of ambrosia. The gate is not the principle to which one arrives, but it lets those who have not arrived enter. The jewel is not a possession to display, but it keeps one who has awakened from belittling oneself. The treasure place is not a fantasy in the distance, but it keeps the traveler from taking the conjured city as the destination. Awakening, discerning the road, and entering the gate are three mutually illuminating images.

Guanding's Private Preface: The Jewel, the Treasure Place, and Present Disclosure
Ultimate principle originally transcends such relative names as partial and perfect; for now, the simile of the perfect jewel is provisionally used to discuss that ultimate principle. The ultimate originally cannot be fixed as distant or near; for now, the simile of the treasure place is provisionally used to clarify that ultimate.
When a person accords with the ultimate, that person merges with perfect principle, and both the work of teaching and the principle revealed return together to quiescence. Yet sentient beings remain unquiet precisely because they are intoxicated by the wine of ignorance: although the jewel has long been fastened inside their clothing, they remain wholly unaware of it; although the road to nirvāṇa is not distant, those who have lost their way say that the journey is long.
The sacred sovereign, the World-Honored One, has compassion for these inverted and deluded sentient beings. At the beginning of the sutra, four kinds of wondrous flowers rain from the heavens and the earth quakes in six ways, opening the gate of skillful means for sentient beings. Later in the sutra, the lands are purified through three transformations, and bodhisattvas equal to the dust motes of a thousand worlds emerge from the earth, manifesting the ground of the real. All these establishments serve one purpose: to enable all sentient beings universally to see and hear.
Explaining Each Graph of the Title through the Conditions of the Whole Sutra
Because the previously secret and profound treasury is opened, it is called “wondrous.” Because the correct tracks of the provisional and the real are shown, it is called “Dharma.” Because the original fruit of buddhahood attained in the remote past is indicated, “lotus” is used as a simile. Because the nondual perfect path is gathered, “flower” is used as a simile. Because the Buddha's work is accomplished by teaching through sound, it is called “sutra.” The beginning of the perfect teaching is called “preface.” Content of the same class following like content is called a “chapter.” Because it stands first in the sequence of all the chapters, it is called “first.”
Guanding then explains: the preceding discourse and record concerning the beginning and end narrate the sutra's name; accordance and merging narrate the sutra's substance; the perfect jewel narrates its purport; the shared quiescence of phenomena and principle narrates its function; the four heavenly flowers and six kinds of quaking narrate the characteristics of the teaching; and the relation between Origin and Trace within it can be known from the preceding text.
Preface to the Profound Meaning: The Deep and Profound Treasury of the Original Ground
This Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma is the extremely deep and profound secret treasury of the remote original ground. The sutra means: this Dharma cannot be directly shown, and the marks of the world abide permanently. This is the Dharma realized by the tathāgatas of past, present, and future.
The sutra further says: this is the principle of the foremost quiescence and extinction, which the Buddha already knew at the place of awakening; he appeared in the world because of the causes and conditions of one great matter. Sentient beings who first saw the Buddha's body were caused to enter buddha-wisdom. For those who had not yet entered, throughout more than forty years the Buddha used different skillful means to assist in revealing the ultimate meaning. Now he straightforwardly sets aside skillful means and teaches only the unsurpassed path.
How “Wondrous” Runs through Dharma, Lotus Blossom, and Sutra
“Wondrous” first praises and extols the inconceivable Dharma.
At another level, wondrousness is itself the Dharma of the ten Dharma realms and ten suchnesses. This Dharma is itself wondrous, and this wondrousness is itself Dharma. Wondrousness and Dharma are not two things separate from one another; there are neither two marks nor any difference, and therefore it is called wondrous.
At another level, the provisional and real dharmas practiced in one's own conduct are wondrous; the lotus blossom is therefore presented to illustrate them.
At another level, the Origin is seen in the Trace right here, and the Trace is seen in the Origin right here. It cannot be fixed as Origin, nor can it be fixed as Trace; it may also be explained through relations such as opening and relinquishment〔and so forth〕.
At another level, this is the supremely excellent sūtra and the gate of ambrosia; therefore it is called wondrous.
The final passage explains: wondrousness has no separate independent substance; it is praise and extolment applied to the Dharma's substance, narrating the wondrous name. Wondrousness is the Dharma realm, and the Dharma realm is wondrousness, narrating the sutra's substance. The provisional and real in one's own practice narrate the purport. The six similes of Origin and Trace narrate the function. The gate of ambrosia narrates the characteristics of the teaching.
Why does a person remain on the road when the jewel has already been fastened and the treasure place is not far? The Private Sovereign Preface first states two apparent contradictions: principle transcends the partial and the perfect, yet it must be discussed through the perfect jewel; the ultimate belongs neither to distance nor nearness, yet it must be explained through the treasure place. If principle cannot be enclosed by names, why use similes? If the jewel is already in one's clothing and the treasure place is nearby, why do sentient beings still neither know nor arrive?
Guanding does not answer with an abstract definition. He brings forward a drunken person and a lost traveler. The drunk has a jewel fastened inside his clothing but does not know it; the traveler is not far from the treasure place but says the road is long. These two scenes divide the difficulty of sentient beings into two sides. They are not entirely without the treasure, but already have it and do not know; the destination is not absolutely unreachable, but they have lost the direction and mistake it for a distant place. Everything that follows—the auspicious signs, opening the gate, revealing the ground, and explaining the title—answers how a person may know the jewel and recognize the road.
If Principle Transcends Words, Why Are the Perfect Jewel and Treasure Place Still Needed?
That principle transcends partial and perfect does not establish another partial view opposed to the perfect. It first loosens fixed attachment to the names partial and perfect, then immediately uses the perfect jewel to discuss principle. Words therefore cannot confine principle, yet they can remain skillful means that point to it. The same holds for the ultimate being neither distant nor near. It is not defined by spatial distance, yet the nearness or distance of the treasure place can let a lost traveler see where the mistake lies.
The perfect jewel emphasizes possession. The jewel has already been fastened, yet the drunk forgets it because of the wine of ignorance. The problem is not that a jewel is missing outside, but that the person cannot recognize what has been received. The treasure place emphasizes direction. The road is not far, yet the traveler calls what is near a long journey. The problem is not that the destination has receded into infinity, but that the traveler mistakes a temporary resting place or a wrong direction for the actual course.
Placed together, the two similes illuminate possession and destination. Knowing that one is not wholly without anything and discerning where one is going illuminate one another. To speak only of having the jewel without correcting the road may leave one motionless. To speak only of the road without knowing what one possesses may make one too self-abasing to advance.
If Phenomena and Principle Are Already Quiescent, Why Speak of What Is Not Quiescent?
When the ultimate is met, one merges with perfect principle, and phenomena and principle become quiescent together. The preface immediately turns: sentient beings remain unquiet because they are intoxicated by the wine of ignorance, unaware of the jewel fastened within their clothing, and lost on the path while calling it long. The second statement does not contradict the first; the subject has shifted from those who accord with principle to those still deluded. Principle and the work of teaching may both be quiescent, yet sentient beings have not necessarily known, practiced, or arrived.
Quiescence therefore cannot be taken as a declaration alone. If one hears only that principle is quiescent and overlooks the disquiet of sentient beings, people still drunk and still traveling will be described in advance as already arrived. If one sees only sentient beings in cyclic wandering and forgets that principle can be met, the road will forever lack a direction. The preface places the two sides closely together precisely so that ultimate principle and the work of rescuing the deluded do not become separated.
Why Does the Buddha Use Auspicious Signs, Transformed Lands, and Emergence from the Earth to Enable Seeing and Hearing?
Because sentient beings remain unquiet through unawareness and lost direction, the sacred sovereign, the World-Honored One, has compassion for their inversion and delusion. The four flowers and six quakings alert the assembly that something extraordinary is taking place, and the gate of skillful means thereby opens. The three transformations purifying the lands and the bodhisattvas emerging from the earth then disclose the relation between the visible world and the original ground in the remote past, manifesting the ground of the real.
All these great scenes point toward “seeing and hearing.” The drunk must be awakened and the lost traveler shown the road. The Buddha's teaching therefore does not offer only a definition; through sound, color, quaking, lands, and transformations in the assembly, it gives differing faculties places through which to enter. Auspicious signs are not spectacles as ends in themselves, nor are transformed lands decorations for the world. Their function is universally to enable all beings to see and hear.
Why Explain the Eight Graphs of the Sutra Title through Events in the Whole Sutra?
Guanding next explains each graph of the title without leaving the preceding disclosure. Because the secret and profound treasury is opened, it is wondrous; because the correct tracks of the provisional and the real are shown, it is Dharma; because the original fruit in the remote past is indicated, the lotus illustrates it; because the nondual perfect path is gathered, the flower illustrates it; because sound accomplishes the Buddha's work, it is a sutra. Turning then to the whole sutra's sequence, the beginning of the perfect teaching is the preface, content of the same class following together is a chapter, and its place at the head of all chapters makes it first.
This explanation keeps the title from becoming a label pasted outside the sutra. Wondrous, Dharma, lotus, and flower all arise from opening the secret, showing the provisional and the real, indicating the remote Origin, and gathering the perfect path. Sutra, preface, chapter, and first arise from teaching and textual sequence. Every graph returns to the way the Buddha enables sentient beings to see and hear; the title thereby becomes a miniature of the whole sutra's action.
The first “explains” then gathers the preceding text. Discourse and record belong to the name; meeting and merging belong to the substance; the perfect jewel belongs to the purport; the shared quiescence of phenomena and principle belongs to the function; the four flowers and six quakings belong to the teaching; and Origin and Trace can be seen throughout the passage itself. The five topics are not labels added from outside but marks placed again along the road already traveled by the preface: what was spoken, what substance was met, what purport was approached, what function arose, and how the teaching was delivered.
Why Speak First of the Deep and Profound Treasury of the Original Ground?
At this point the preface opens another layer. It first says that this Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma is the deep and profound treasury of the original ground. It then says that this Dharma cannot be shown, the marks of the world abide permanently, and all tathāgatas of the three times realize this same Dharma.
The Buddha knew the foremost quiescence and extinction at the place of awakening, and he appeared in the world because of one great matter. The preface moves from the Dharma realized by the tathāgatas of the three times to the Buddha's appearance in the world, and then to the way sentient beings enter buddha-wisdom.
Those who first saw the Buddha's body were caused to enter buddha-wisdom. For those who had not entered, the Buddha spent more than forty years using different skillful means to assist in revealing the ultimate meaning. Now he straightforwardly sets aside skillful means and speaks only the unsurpassed path. These sentences state, one by one, the sentient beings addressed and the content taught.
If Wondrousness Is Inconceivable, How Can It Still Be Explained in Layers?
The preface to the Profound Meaning begins with praise: “wondrous” extols the inconceivable Dharma. It then says that the Dharma of the ten Dharma realms and ten suchnesses is itself wondrous, that wondrousness itself is Dharma, and that the two are neither dual nor different. This step prevents wondrousness from remaining an external ornament. If a separate wondrousness existed outside the Dharma, it would be decoration and could not explain the Dharma itself.
At the next level, the provisional and the real in one's own practice are wondrous; the lotus blossom is therefore presented as their simile. Wondrousness descends from the Dharma's substance into practice. The provisional and the real are not only terms to distinguish; in one's own practice they must be opened, revealed, and gathered. At the next level, the Origin is seen in the Trace and the Trace in the Origin; it is neither fixed Origin nor fixed Trace, and can also be explained through relations of opening and relinquishment. Wondrousness makes Origin and Trace distinguishable without fixing them as two isolated entities.
Finally, wondrousness also qualifies the sutra: the supremely excellent sūtra is called the gate of ambrosia. From Dharma and practice through Origin and Trace to the sutra, wondrousness never establishes an independent substance, but praises each layer set out in the text.
The second “explains” therefore gathers the five topics once again. Praise applied to the substance is the name; wondrousness itself being the Dharma realm is the substance; the provisional and the real in one's own practice are the purport; the six similes of Origin and Trace are the function; and the gate of ambrosia is the teaching. The first recapitulation arose from the perfect jewel, meeting and merging, and the auspicious signs; the second arises from wondrousness, Dharma, one's own practice, Origin and Trace, and sutra. Both carry the reader to the threshold of the Five Chapters while preserving the distinct content each preface has set forth.
Looking Back over the Whole Piece from the Jewel and the Road
At the end of the piece, the opening jewel and road have not disappeared. Wondrousness itself being the Dharma realm shows that the jewel is not added from outside. The provisional and the real in one's own practice show that knowing of the jewel does not remove the need to walk the road. Seeing the Origin in the Trace and the Trace in the Origin shows that visible signs along the road do not depart from the original ground in the remote past. The gate of ambrosia makes the sutra's teaching an actual place of entry.
The Private Sovereign Preface is therefore not merely another preface. It first uses the lost jewel and mistaken road to explain why sentient beings remain unaware, then uses auspicious signs and transformed lands to show how the Buddha enables seeing and hearing. It joins its citations through the deep and profound treasury of the original ground, different skillful means, and the unsurpassed path, and finally uses “wondrous” to run through Dharma, practice, Origin and Trace, and teaching. The jewel answers “What do I possess?”; the treasure place answers “Where am I going?”; the sutra answers “How does one move from unawareness to seeing?”
Through the Eye of the Shiqian
The reading above has followed the two layers of preface. Zhanran's Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian first draws their boundary: from the Private Sovereign Preface through the end of the first “explains” is Zhang'an's private preface and private explanation; from “this Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma” onward is separately the preface to the Profound Meaning itself. The two recapitulations through the Five Chapters therefore each have their own source.
First, the perfect jewel expressly means the jewel sewn into the clothing and is used to discuss the absolute principle through an image. The treasure place is tied to the five hundred yojanas, the nearness of the conjured city, and the distance of the treasure isle. The completion of transformation is quiescence in phenomena, while revealing the real is quiescence in principle. Intoxication and unawareness are read through retreat from the Great Vehicle, cyclic wandering, and forgetting what was received in the past; calling the road long is read through mistaking the Great Vehicle for distant and taking the Lesser Vehicle as ultimate.
The perfect jewel is therefore not supported here by a different sutra, nor are the treasure place and the jewel in the clothing combined into one simile. One illuminates hearing in the past and forgetting; the other illuminates losing the direction and mistaking the distance.
Second, the four flowers and six quakings occur in the sutra's opening preface, while transformation of the lands and splitting of the earth occur in later chapters. Their placement together in the short preface does not mean that the root sutra contains a continuous phrase “three transformations and a thousand emergences.” Here, moreover, the lotus illustrates the Origin in the remote past and the flower the gathering of the perfect; this assignment must be preserved separately from the preceding preface's lotus as real and flower as provisional.
The commentator restricts accomplishing the Buddha's work through sound to spoken teaching during the Buddha's lifetime; preface, chapter, and first are explained through the sequence of the complete sutra. These supplements are judgments in the mirror, not words placed backward into Guanding's verbatim account.
Third, the base text has “discourse and record.” Zhanran proposes that “discourse and record” may be mistaken and that it should be “discourse and entrustment,” explaining it as entrusting the explanation to the treasure place and discussing the ultimate principle. This is a collation explicitly proposed by an ancient commentary; the main text still retains “discourse and record.” The preface to the Profound Meaning first gives the reason a sutra exists, next clarifies the present sutra, and then explains the title. Because the Buddha realized the Origin, he could teach; from inner realization, he turned to teaching others. Beginning and end aim at buddha-wisdom, while the skillful means in between bring capacities to maturity.
Finally, the graph “wondrous” comprehensively qualifies Dharma, lotus blossom, and sutra. Ambrosia is principle, and the teaching is the gate to principle. Looking back through this mirror, the jewel in the clothing speaks of the cause heard in the past; the treasure place speaks of the ultimate destination; original realization speaks of the source from which the sutra emerged; and the gate of ambrosia speaks of how the teaching provides access to principle. Only when the two preface layers and two recapitulations keep their places can the whole piece move from loss to an entrance.
考據Apparatus
This unit contains two layers of preface. From 「私序王」 tr. “Private Sovereign Preface”〔T33n1716 0681b25〕 through 「本迹可知」 tr. “Origin and Trace can be known”〔0681c08〕, Guanding uses the jewel in the clothing, the treasure place, and auspicious signs throughout the sutra to narrate its beginning and end. He then explains each graph of the title and recapitulates the passage through name, substance, purport, function, and teaching. From 「此《妙法蓮華經》者」 tr. “As for this Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma”〔0681c09〕 through 「甘露門者,敘教也」 tr. “The gate of ambrosia narrates the teaching”〔0681c23〕, the Shiqian separately identifies a preface to the Profound Meaning itself. It first explains why a sutra exists and the proper teaching of the present sutra, then qualifies Dharma, lotus blossom, and sutra with the graph “wondrous.” Although the file title is Private Sovereign Preface, its latter half cannot continue to be assigned wholesale to Guanding's private preface.
1. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
Following 「序王」 tr. “Sovereign Preface,” this unit begins with 「私序王」 tr. “Private Sovereign Preface”〔T33n1716 0681b25〕 and ends with 「甘露門者,敘教也」 tr. “The gate of ambrosia narrates the teaching”〔0681c23〕 at the close of the second 「釋曰」 tr. “explains”〔0681c20〕. The half-fascicle title and attribution begin at 0681c25, and the list of the Five Chapters begins at 0681c29; neither is part of this unit. The extant unit boundary is 0681b25–0681c23, comprising 532 graphs.
The Shiqian first identifies the passage beginning with the Private Sovereign Preface as Zhang'an's private preface and divides it into preface and explanation; within the preface it says, 「先譚始末,次釋經題。」 tr. “First it discusses the beginning and end; next it explains the sutra title”〔T33n1717 0818a02〕. At 0681c09 it separately identifies the passage beginning “this Wondrous Dharma,” saying 「去一序是譚玄本,序得下文意」 tr. “The following preface discusses the basis of the Profound Meaning; the preface obtains the intent of the text below”〔0818c14〕. It can therefore be divided into seven sections:
| Section | Range | Anchor in the Base Text | Content | Voice-Layer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0681b25 | 「私序王」 tr. “Private Sovereign Preface” | Title | outline heading |
“Ultimate principle transcends the partial and the perfect” to 「普得見聞」 tr. “universally attain seeing and hearing” | Jewel in the clothing, treasure place, delusion and awakening, and present disclosure | Guanding's private preface |
“open the secret and profound treasury” to 「名為第一」 tr. “called first”〔0681c06〕 | Explains, graph by graph, wondrous, Dharma, lotus, flower, sutra, preface, chapter, and first | Guanding's private preface |
| 4 | 0681c07–c09 | The first 「釋曰」 tr. “explains” to 「本迹可知」 tr. “Origin and Trace can be known”〔0681c08〕 | Recapitulates the private preface through name, substance, purport, function, and teaching | Guanding's private explanation |
“As for this Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma” to 「但說無上道」 tr. “teach only the unsurpassed path” | Why the sutra exists and the proper clarification of the present sutra | preface to the Profound Meaning |
“As for what is called wondrous” to 「故言妙也」 tr. “therefore it is called wondrous” | Uses “wondrous” to qualify Dharma, lotus blossom, Origin and Trace, and sutra | preface to the Profound Meaning |
| 7 | 0681c20–c23 | The second 「釋曰」 tr. “explains” to the end | Again recapitulates through name, substance, purport, function, and teaching | explanation of the preface to the Profound Meaning |
The first 「釋曰」 tr. “explains”〔T33n1716 0681c07〕 and the second 「釋曰」 tr. “explains”〔0681c20〕 belong to different preface layers and cannot be merged. The former looks back at Guanding's jewel in the clothing, treasure place, and auspicious signs; the latter looks back at the preface to the Profound Meaning and its development of wondrousness, Dharma, lotus blossom, Origin and Trace, and sutra.
2. Formation and Transmission
This unit directly continues the second and third layers among the three prefaces. The Shiqian identifies the first preface as the Great Master's separately circulating preface to the sutra, the passage from the Private Sovereign Preface onward as the recorder's preface, and the passage from “this Wondrous Dharma” onward as the preface to the Profound Meaning itself〔T33n1717 0816a27〕. Thus, 0681b25–c08 may be called Guanding's private preface and private explanation on explicit textual grounds; 0681c09–c23 should be called the preface to the Profound Meaning, not only because its doctrinal content differs but because the ancient commentary changes layers in its line-by-line analysis.
Its received-text context continues the preceding unit's record by Guanding that 「《玄》、《文》各十卷」 tr. “the Xuanyi and Wenju comprise ten fascicles each”〔T33n1716 0681a22–a23〕. The authorial layers here are further distinguished through the analysis of the three prefaces.
After this unit, the half-fascicle title bears the attribution 「天台智者大師說」 tr. “spoken by the Tiantai Master Zhiyi”〔T33n1716 0681c28〕. The Privately Recorded Origins in the preceding unit separately bears 「沙門灌頂述」 tr. “accounted by the monk Guanding”〔0681a05〕. These two attributions together with the analysis of the three prefaces preserve the relation between speaking and recording. Although the latter half of this unit may, following the Shiqian, be called the preface to the Profound Meaning, an inference is still not substituted for the extant attribution.
3. Scriptures and Treatises Cited by Zhiyi
The Jewel in the Clothing, Treasure Place, Auspicious Signs, and Sutra Title
| Original Line in the Xuanyi | Present Parallel | Verification and Layering |
|---|---|---|
“Use the perfect jewel to discuss principle”〔T33n1716 0681b26〕; 「耽無明酒,雖繫珠而不覺」 tr. “Intoxicated by the wine of ignorance, although the jewel is fastened, one does not know it”〔0681b28〕 | Lotus Sutra: 「醉酒而臥」 tr. “lay down in drunkenness”〔T09n0262 0029a06〕; 「以無價寶珠繫其衣裏」 tr. “fastened a priceless precious jewel inside his clothing”〔0029a07〕; 「今故現在,而汝不知」 tr. “It is therefore still present now, yet you do not know it”〔0029a13〕 | The simile of the jewel in the clothing; the root sutra says “priceless precious jewel,” while “perfect” is the private preface's interpretation. The Shiqian expressly says that the jewel in the clothing originally illustrates hearing the true mark in the past〔0818a22〕 |
“Entrust the discussion of the ultimate to the treasure place”〔T33n1716 0681b26–b27〕; 「迷涅槃道,路弗遠而言長」 tr. “Lost on the road to nirvāṇa, although the road is not far, one calls it long”〔0681b28–b29〕 | Lotus Sutra: 「若能前至寶所,亦可得去」 tr. “If you can go onward to the treasure place, you may proceed”〔T09n0262 0026a07〕; 「寶處在近」 tr. “The place of treasure is nearby”〔0026a12〕; same wording again〔0026a24〕 | The treasure-place setting from the simile of the conjured city; it and the jewel in the clothing are two different similes and are not made into one source story |
tr. “The heavens rained māndārava flowers, great māndārava flowers, mañjūṣaka flowers, and great mañjūṣaka flowers, scattering them over the Buddha and the great assembly. Throughout the Buddha-worlds, there were six kinds of quaking”〔T09n0262 0002b10〕 | The setting in the root sutra's “Introduction” chapter; four kinds of heavenly flower and six kinds of quaking appear together |
| 「三變」 tr. “three transformations”〔T33n1716 0681c01〕 | First transformation: 「時娑婆世界即變清淨」 tr. “At that time, the Sahā world was immediately transformed and purified”〔T09n0262 0033a09〕; second: 「八方各更變二百萬億那由他國,皆令清淨」 tr. “In each of the eight directions, another two hundred myriads of koṭis of nayuta lands were transformed and all made pure”〔0033a21〕; third: 「復於八方各更變二百萬億那由他國,皆令清淨」 tr. “Again, in each of the eight directions, another two hundred myriads of koṭis of nayuta lands were transformed and all made pure”〔0033b03〕 | Three scenes compressed; the root sutra does not have “three transformations” as a continuous two-graph expression |
“The earth throughout the three-thousand-great-thousand lands of the Sahā world all quaked and split”〔T09n0262 0039c28〕; 「菩薩摩訶薩同時踊出」 tr. “The bodhisattva-mahāsattvas emerged at the same time”〔0039c29〕; also 「千世界微塵等菩薩摩訶薩,從地踊出者」 tr. “bodhisattva-mahāsattvas equal to the dust motes of a thousand worlds, who emerged from the earth”〔0051c09〕 | A compression of two settings: splitting of the earth and emergence, and bodhisattvas equal to the dust motes of a thousand worlds. No continuous root-sutra phrase “three transformations and a thousand emergences” is fabricated |
“sound performs the Buddha's work”〔T33n1716 0681c05〕 | Vimalakīrtinirdeśa: 「有以音聲、語言、文字而作佛事」 tr. “Some perform the Buddha's work through sound, speech, and written signs”〔T14n0475 0553c25〕; 「諸所施為,無非佛事」 tr. “Among all that is done, nothing is not the Buddha's work”〔0553c28〕 | A fragment with the same meaning; the Shiqian explains this sentence through spoken teaching during the Buddha's lifetime |
tr. “The beginning of the perfect teaching is designated the preface. Content of the same class as the preface following together is called a chapter. At the head of the sequence of all is called first”〔T33n1716 0681c05–c07〕 | The fascicle title of the Lotus Sutra, 「妙法蓮華經卷第一」 tr. “Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma, Fascicle One”〔T09n0262 0001c14〕; chapter title, 「序品第一」 tr. “Introduction, Chapter One”〔0001c18〕 | The visible titles in the root sutra; “perfect teaching,” “same class as the preface,” and “sequence of all” are Guanding's explanations |
The jewel in the clothing and the treasure place both come from the Lotus Sutra. No direct textual evidence establishes a perfect jewel from the Nirvāṇa Sūtra as the source here. The jewel in the clothing concerns hearing in the past and forgetting; the treasure place concerns delusion about the road's distance. Together the two similes depict loss, but the stories they carry remain distinct.
Stitching and Excerpting in the Preface to the Profound Meaning
| Citation in the Xuanyi | Present Sutra Text | Relationship |
|---|---|---|
tr. “This Dharma cannot be shown; the marks of the world abide permanently”〔T33n1716 0681c10〕 | Lotus Sutra: 「是法不可示,言辭相寂滅」 tr. “This Dharma cannot be shown; the marks of words are quiescent and extinguished”〔T09n0262 0005c25〕; another verse says 「是法住法位,世間相常住」 tr. “This Dharma abides in the Dharma-position; the marks of the world abide permanently”〔0009b10〕 | Joins the opening line of one verse to the closing line of another; the present text does not contain them as one continuous verse |
tr. “This is the foremost quiescence and extinction, already known at the place of awakening; because of the causes and conditions of a great matter, he appeared in the world”〔T33n1716 0681c11–c12〕 | 「知第一寂滅,以方便力故」 tr. “Knowing the foremost quiescence and extinction, through the power of skillful means”〔T09n0262 0009b15〕; 「於道場知已,導師方便說」 tr. “Having known it at the place of awakening, the guide taught through skillful means”〔0009b11〕; 「諸佛世尊唯以一大事因緣故出現於世」 tr. “The buddha-world-honored ones appear in the world solely because of the causes and conditions of one great matter”〔0007a21〕 | A stitched excerpt from three places; the Xuanyi says “this is foremost,” while the present sutra says “knowing the foremost” |
tr. “On first seeing my body, I caused them to enter buddha-wisdom”〔T33n1716 0681c12〕 | 「始見我身,聞我所說,即皆信受入如來慧」 tr. “On first seeing my body and hearing what I taught, they all immediately trusted, accepted, and entered the Tathāgata's wisdom”〔T09n0262 0040b08〕 | An excerpt omitting the middle and condensing “enter the Tathāgata's wisdom” as “cause them to enter buddha-wisdom” |
tr. “For those not yet entered, throughout more than forty years, through different skillful means, he assisted in revealing the ultimate meaning”〔T33n1716 0681c13–c14〕 | Lotus Sutra: 「從是已來,始過四十餘年」 tr. “From that time onward, more than forty years have now passed”〔T09n0262 0041c06〕; Sutra of Immeasurable Meanings: 「種種說法,以方便力,四十餘年未曾顯實」 tr. “Teaching the Dharma in various ways through the power of skillful means, for more than forty years he had never revealed the real”〔T09n0276 0386b01〕 | Reads together settings in two sutras; “different skillful means” and “assist in revealing the ultimate meaning” are not continuous verbatim wording in the present texts listed |
tr. “Now straightforwardly set aside skillful means and teach only the unsurpassed path”〔T33n1716 0681c14〕 | Same wording〔T09n0262 0010a19〕 | Identical |
The first 「文云」 tr. “the text says”〔T33n1716 0681c10〕 and the next 「文云」 tr. “the text says”〔0681c11〕 introduce deliberate combinations made in the preface. They should not be silently separated or revised because the punctuation of the present sutra is more familiar. The apparatus first preserves the way the Xuanyi cites, then shows each location in the present text.
4. Essential Explanations from the Shiqian [the Mirror]
The main exegesis of the Shiqian is attributed 「天台沙門湛然述」 tr. “accounted by the Tiantai monk Zhanran”〔T33n1717 0815b04〕. The prefatory “Origins of the Shiqian” bears 「君山除饉男普門子屬辭」 tr. “Composed by the famine-removing son Pumenzi of Junshan”〔0815a05〕 and is Pumenzi's reverential preface, not Zhanran's words. The line-by-line main exegesis of this unit is at 0818a01–c29.
Guanding's Private Preface: From Losing the Jewel and the Road to Present Disclosure
The Shiqian says that this passage 「先譚始末,次釋經題」 tr. “first discusses the beginning and end, then explains the sutra title”〔T33n1717 0818a02〕 and comprehensively understands its impetus through causes and conditions from a past life〔0818a05〕. The phrase 「寄圓珠」 tr. “use the perfect jewel”〔T33n1716 0681b26〕 is explained as 「今寄圓珠而譚絕理」 tr. “now using the perfect jewel to discuss the absolute principle”〔T33n1717 0818a14〕. The phrase 「託寶所」 tr. “entrust it to the treasure place”〔T33n1716 0681b26〕 means 「託五百由旬,引化城之近,說寶渚之遠」 tr. “entrusting it to the five hundred yojanas, citing the nearness of the conjured city and speaking of the distance of the treasure isle”〔T33n1717 0818a16〕. The jewel in the clothing and the conjured city each retain their own root-sutra setting.
The base text's 「極會圓冥,事理俱寂」 tr. “meeting the ultimate and merging with the perfect, phenomena and principle both quiescent”〔T33n1716 0681b27〕 is opened by the Shiqian into two routes: 「化周為事寂,顯實為理寂」 tr. “the completion of transformation is quiescence in phenomena; revealing the real is quiescence in principle”〔T33n1717 0818a18〕. It further takes merging with principle as quiescence in principle and completing phenomena as quiescence in phenomena. Turning to sentient beings who are not quiescent, it explains the wine of ignorance through retreat from the Great Vehicle, cyclic wandering, and forgetting what was received in the past〔0818a23〕, and the mistaken road through regarding the Great Vehicle as distant and the Lesser Vehicle as ultimate〔0818a26〕. Only from the phrase 「聖主」 tr. “sacred sovereign” onward does the text turn to present disclosure. The four flowers and six quakings occur in the “Introduction” chapter, while transformations of the lands and splitting of the earth occur in later chapters. The base text compresses and places scenes from across the sutra together〔0818b01〕.
The Title's Meaning and the First Private Explanation
Concerning wondrous, Dharma, lotus, and flower, the Shiqian determines that “Wondrous Dharma” comprehensively explains Origin and Trace, while “lotus blossom” comprehensively illustrates Origin and Trace. It further says, 「今以久本喻蓮,會圓譬華。」 tr. “Here the Origin in the remote past is illustrated by the lotus, and the gathering of the perfect is illustrated by the flower”〔0818b06〕. This assignment differs from the Sovereign Preface's flower as provisional and lotus as real. It should be read as another route through the title in Guanding's present preface and should not be forced into one fixed table.
“Sound performs the Buddha's work” is restricted to spoken teaching during the Buddha's lifetime, though its meaning also applies after the Buddha's extinction〔T33n1717 0818b11〕. Preface, chapter, and first are explained according to the sequence of the complete sutra; because this is the earliest, it is called the head〔0818b15〕. The first 「釋曰」 tr. “explains”〔T33n1716 0681c07〕 gathers meeting and merging, the perfect jewel, shared quiescence, and the four flowers and six quakings into substance, purport, function, and teaching. The Shiqian further takes hearing the Dharma and having the jewel fastened as the perfect cause, and receiving a prediction and being shown the jewel as the perfect effect〔T33n1717 0818b29〕.
The base text has 「談記是敘名」 tr. “discourse and record narrate the name”〔T33n1716 0681c07〕. The Shiqian proposes that “discourse and record” may be mistaken and that it should read “discourse and entrustment,” explaining, 「謂託寶所譚理極也。」 tr. “It means entrusting it to the treasure place and discussing ultimate principle”〔T33n1717 0818b24〕. This is a collation explicitly stated by the commentator, not a main-text variant marked in T1716. The base text therefore retains “discourse and record”; the proposed reading is separately noted and not silently substituted.
Preface to the Profound Meaning: From Original Realization to the Proper Teaching
Beginning from 「此《妙法蓮華經》者」 tr. “As for this Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma”〔T33n1716 0681c09〕, the Shiqian separately identifies a preface to the Profound Meaning〔T33n1717 0818c14〕. It first has 「初敘有經之由,次正明今經」 tr. “first narrate the reason a sutra exists; next properly clarify the present sutra”〔0818c16〕, and explains the title from the phrase “as for what is called” onward. It initially says, 「初由本證,故能說之」 tr. “First, because of original realization, he could teach it”〔0818c17〕. The first citation is taken from the side of self-realization, where no Dharma can be spoken〔0818c18〕; the sentence concerning the three times broadly indicates that all that is realized is the same〔0818c19〕.
The second citation turns from inner realization toward teaching others; the original intent of the great matter lies in the Buddha Vehicle〔0818c20〕. First seeing, more than forty years, and now properly teaching form beginning, end, and the maturation in between. The Shiqian says, 「故舉始終意在佛慧,中間調斥非佛本懷」 tr. “Thus it raises the beginning and end, whose intent lies in buddha-wisdom; the maturation and correction in between were not the Buddha's original intent”〔0818c22〕, and uses this to explain assistance in revealing. Only at the word 「今」 tr. “now” does it turn to the proper teaching of the present sutra〔0818c23〕.
The explanation of the title uses “wondrous” to qualify Dharma, lotus blossom, and sutra throughout〔0818c23〕. The final explanation again concludes through name, substance, purport, function, and teaching. Ambrosia is principle, and the teaching is the gate to principle; it is therefore called the gate of ambrosia〔0818c26〕. The proper explanation of the Five Chapters begins next at 0819a01, confirming that 0681c23 is the end of the preface.
5. Explanations of Various Masters
The Qing monk Zhiquan's Fahua Jing Xuanqian Zhengshi, X28n0592, is a later ancient commentary. Fascicle one is attributed 「苕上沙門 智銓 述」 tr. “accounted by the monk Zhiquan of Tiaoshang”〔X28n0592 0557b12〕. Its explanation first says, 「私序王含始末者,謂近含五時,遠及宿世,故云始末。」 tr. “The Private Sovereign Preface contains beginning and end: proximally it contains the five periods, remotely it reaches past lives; therefore it says beginning and end”〔0561a06–a07〕. Concerning the later passage it also says, 「譚玄本序言異方便等文句云:正因佛性,即第一義理。 tr. “Regarding the words ‘different skillful means’ in the preface discussing the basis of the Profound Meaning, the Wenju says: the buddha-nature as direct cause is the principle of the ultimate meaning. If one uses the perfect and wondrous correct contemplation, this is skillful means of the true mark and is not called different. If one uses the contemplations of the seven skillful means to assist in revealing the ultimate, they are called different skillful means”〔0561b06–b08〕. The two passages respectively address Zhang'an's private preface and the preface to the Profound Meaning. They are recorded here without being merged with the Shiqian.
6. Terminology
Perfect jewel. This means the priceless jewel inside the clothing in “The Five Hundred Disciples Receive Their Predictions” chapter. The root sutra says “priceless”; the private preface uses “perfect jewel” to discuss principle. “Perfect” is an interpretation here, not an original graph qualifying the root sutra's jewel.
Treasure place. This means the treasure destination toward which travelers proceed in “The Parable of the Conjured City” chapter. The conjured city is for temporary rest, while the treasure place is the destination. Nearness and distance concern delusion and awakening, not cartographic measurement.
Principle transcends the partial and the perfect. This sentence first says that principle is not confined by the terms partial and perfect, then immediately uses the perfect jewel to discuss it. It does not cancel the meaning of perfection; it uses a simile to rely on language without making language the basis of principle itself.
Wondrous, Dharma, lotus, and flower. This passage calls opening the secret and profound treasury wondrous, showing the correct tracks of the provisional and the real Dharma, the original fruit in the remote past lotus, and the nondual perfect path flower〔T33n1716 0681c02–c05〕. This is the verbatim assignment within this private preface and coexists with 00b's assignment of the lotus fruit to the real and the flower to the provisional.
Sovereign Preface. The graph wang is read in the departing tone and means arising or beginning〔T33n1717 0816a29–b01〕. The Private Sovereign Preface is another prefatory beginning written by the recorder, not a private ranking of which preface is most exalted.
Original ground and original fruit. The original ground is the root of original realization from which teaching becomes possible; the original fruit is the fruition of buddhahood in the remote past. Both contrast with the Trace of recent attainment and mean neither a geographical homeland nor an original physical copy of a book.
Sūtra and gate of ambrosia. Sūtra is a transcription of the word for scripture; the text calls the most excellent sūtra the gate of ambrosia〔T33n1716 0681c19–c20〕. The Shiqian takes ambrosia as principle and teaching as the gate to principle〔T33n1717 0818c26〕.
Later summary expressions. The Five Periods and Eight Teachings, modes of transformation, methods of transformation, Tripiṭaka/shared/distinct/perfect, the ten subtleties of the Trace Gate, the ten subtleties of the Origin Gate, and “three thousand in one thought-moment” are expressions commonly used in later arrangements of Tiantai doctrine. They are not verbatim terms at 0681b25–c23. This unit should unfold according to its extant perfect jewel, treasure place, four flowers and six quakings, Five Chapters, and Origin and Trace.
7. Similes · Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward
One Jewel, One Road
The private preface first sets two similes beside each other. The jewel in the clothing has been fastened but is not recognized; the treasure place is not far, but the traveler says the road is long. The problem in the first is forgetting a cause already possessed; the problem in the second is losing sight of the ultimate toward which one is headed. Together they create the double tension of “inherently possessed but unrecognized, attainable but mistaken through one's own delusion.” What follows therefore does not invent another abstract theory; it turns toward the Buddha's auspicious signs, transformed lands, and emergence from the earth, universally enabling seeing and hearing.
In cross-reading with the root sutra, the jewel in the clothing occurs in “The Five Hundred Disciples Receive Their Predictions” chapter, and the treasure place in “The Parable of the Conjured City” chapter. The four flowers and six quakings occur in the “Introduction” chapter, the three transformations of the lands in the “Beholding the Jeweled Stūpa” chapter, emergence from the earth in the “Emerging from the Earth” chapter, and bodhisattvas equal to the dust motes of a thousand worlds again in “The Supernormal Powers of the Tathāgata” chapter. Guanding gathers scenes separated by many chapters into a short preface, joining the whole sutra from causes and conditions in past lives through auspicious signs in the present to disclosure of the original ground.
Two Recapitulations through the Five Chapters
The first 「釋曰」 tr. “explains”〔T33n1716 0681c07〕 gathers discourse and record, meeting and merging, the perfect jewel, shared quiescence, and the four flowers and six quakings into name, substance, purport, function, and teaching. The second 「釋曰」 tr. “explains”〔0681c20〕 again gathers the same five topics through wondrousness having no separate substance, wondrousness itself being the Dharma realm, the provisional and the real in one's own practice, the six similes of Origin and Trace, and the gate of ambrosia. The same framework illuminates the two prefaces in sequence. The Five Chapters therefore do not appear abruptly at 0681c29; they have already been rehearsed twice in the opening material.
In cross-reading with the Mohe Zhiguan, the Xuanyi distinguishes what is understood through the sutra title and Origin and Trace, while the Zhiguan moves from what is understood into contemplative practice. The perfect jewel and treasure place offer a particular reminder: hearing that one has a precious jewel without recognizing it and knowing of a treasure place while losing the road cannot be resolved by names alone. What the gate of teaching indicates must still be personally reached in practice. This cross-reading shows teaching and contemplation mutually supporting one another; it does not write the technical vocabulary of calming-and-contemplation backward into the original wording of this preface.
Chapter Five of the Outline of the Tiantai School uses later categories of teaching classification to place the various sutras, while Chapter Six uses five questions—explaining the name, discerning the substance, clarifying the purport, discussing the function, and classifying the teaching—to read a sutra. The two recapitulations through the Five Chapters in this unit can serve as a primary-text entrance to Chapter Six. The later categories used in Chapter Five provide navigation only; they are not the verbal source of the four flowers and six quakings or the profound treasury of the original ground.
What this unit carries forward is its placement of “why a sutra exists” before “how its title is explained”: because of original realization, teaching becomes possible; inner realization turns toward teaching others; maturation through the intervening period leads to the present proper teaching; only then does every graph of the title have its place. The title is not a category established apart from the sutra, but a condensation of the conditions from which the whole sutra arose.
8. Placement of the Editions
First, this unit uses T33n1716 as its base. Its title begins at 0681b25, its main text at 0681b26, and it ends at 0681c23. The fascicle title at 0681c25 and the list of the Five Chapters at 0681c29 are outside the unit.
Second, within the range of the three prefaces, 0681a03–0681c23, the main text contains zero variant markers. The first variant marker in the main text is at 0683b01. The source-edition note 「【原】增上寺報恩藏明本」 tr. “Original: the Ming edition from the Hōon Collection at Zōjōji” is anchored at 0681a03 and likewise is not a main-text variant in this unit.
Third, the phrase 「云云」 tr. “and so forth” at 0681c19 is an inline note in the original markup; under the established reader-text convention the base text displays 「或為開廢〔云云〕」 tr. “or it may be explained through opening and relinquishment〔and so forth〕.” It is not a Taishō main-text variant and must not silently disappear when citations are extracted.
Fourth, T1716 reads 「談記是敘名」 tr. “discourse and record narrate the name”〔0681c07〕, while T1717 proposes that “discourse and record” may be mistaken and should read “discourse and entrustment”〔0818b23〕. This is the commentator's collation, not a variant in the base text. The translated and annotated main text does not change “discourse and record”; the apparatus records the proposal alongside it.
Fifth, the opening chapter list in this treatise has 「辨體第二」 tr. “second, discerning the substance”〔0681c29〕, 「論用第四」 tr. “fourth, discussing the function”〔0682a01〕, and 「判教第五」 tr. “fifth, classifying the teaching”〔0682a01〕. The later chapter openings separately have 「顯體」 tr. “revealing the substance”〔0779a06〕, 「明用」 tr. “clarifying the function”〔0796c02〕, and 「釋教相」 tr. “explaining the characteristics of the teaching”〔0800a19〕. The two forms are recorded side by side and are not collated into a single form.
Sixth, page anchors follow the line nearest the first graph of a cited passage. Stitched citations are given with each root-sutra location separately, as are the scenes compressed as three transformations and a thousand emergences. The preface's abbreviated phrasing is not presented as continuous wording from the root sutra.
