〔T33 0809a10〕
心要Essence

Why is skillful means still worthy of praise if it must finally be set aside? Because those of dull faculties who require training and maturation cannot receive full words from the outset. Before recognizing the family estate, they first receive instruction as hired laborers; as their faculties gradually mature, they proceed from receiving instruction to being entrusted with the wealth, and from skillful means to opening the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing.

The five flavors show how this path advances, while half and full show the provisional and real within each step. To look only at the five flavors is easily to see only the skillful means that arranges the sequence; to look only at half and full is easily to see only the reality to which the sequence finally returns. Only when the two mutually accomplish one another are they like a bird with two wings, enabling the provisional and real to range together and advance and withdrawal each to find their proper place.

The Avataṃsaka is full alone, and the Tripiṭaka is half alone; Vaipulya sets half and full against one another, the Great Prajñā carries the half while discussing the full, and the Lotus abolishes the half to clarify the full. Half and full are thus, in turn, full alone, half alone, set against one another, the half carried, and finally the half abolished to clarify the full; skillful means completes its work step by step according to faculties.

Therefore, abolishing the half does not mean denying it. Without the skillful means of half-words training and maturing those of dull faculties, there would be no opening of the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing through full words. When the half’s work is accomplished, the unsurpassed cluster of jewels comes unsought and the practitioner abides in real wisdom; the Tathāgata earnestly praises skillful means precisely because it can bring people to the full.

Plain reading

Third, the explanation proceeds through the five flavors and half and full mutually accomplishing one another. If one discusses only the five flavors, one remains the same as the Southern masters and obtains only the side of skillful means. If one discusses only half-words and full words, one remains the same as the Northern masters and obtains only the side of reality.

What is now clarified is that the five flavors are not separate from half and full, and half and full are not separate from the five flavors. When the five flavors contain half and full, wisdom obtains skillful means and is liberated; when half and full contain the five flavors, skillful means obtains wisdom and is liberated. The provisional and real can then range together like a bird’s two wings. Although they range together, advance and withdrawal each find their proper place.

As for the Avataṃsaka, it is the sudden and full Mahāyāna family estate. It clarifies only the one real and does not require skillful means. It is only full and not half, and within the gradual sequence of the five flavors it becomes milk.

The Tripiṭaka Teaching occupies the position of hired labor and is only skillful means. It is only half and not full, and within the gradual sequence of the five flavors it becomes curds.

With the Vaipulya teaching, rebuke sets half and full against one another and uses the full to rebuke the half. Within the gradual sequence of the five flavors, it becomes raw ghee.

The Great Prajñā is receiving instruction: it carries the half while discussing the full. The half is shared by the three vehicles, while the full belongs exclusively to bodhisattvas. Within the gradual sequence of the five flavors, it becomes refined ghee.

The Lotus is entrusting the family wealth: it abolishes the half and clarifies the full. If the skillful means of half-words had not first trained and matured those of dull faculties, there would likewise be no opening of the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing through full words. Within the gradual sequence of the five flavors, it becomes clarified essence.

The Tathāgata earnestly praises skillful means because half-words possess the function of accomplishing full words. The intent lies precisely here.

The four great śrāvakas gained understanding: the unsurpassed cluster of jewels came of itself without their seeking it. Those who abide in real wisdom likewise all arrive there through half and full mutually accomplishing one another. The intent again lies precisely here.

義疏Exposition

If skillful means is finally to be abolished, how can it still accomplish the full? The five flavors explain how the teachings unfold in sequence, while half and full explain how skillful means and reality are situated at each step. To take only one axis is to see one side while losing the other. Only when the two axes mutually accomplish one another do both the before-and-after sequence and the functions of provisional and real become clear.

Why Does Using Only One Axis Yield Only One Side?

Discussing only the five flavors reveals the sequence from milk to clarified essence, but what is obtained leans toward skillful means. Discussing only half and full distinguishes half-words from full words, but what is obtained leans toward reality. The former possesses before-and-after application but does not illuminate the reality within it; the latter points to reality but does not see how skillful means functions through the sequence.

The root treatise therefore does not discard the five flavors or half and full. It says instead that the five flavors are not separate from half and full, and half and full are not separate from the five flavors. Every step of the five flavors must be supported by half and full, while every function of half and full must be returned to the five-flavor sequence to see when it is applied and when it is held in reserve.

How Do Wisdom and Skillful Means Become a Pair of Wings?

When the five flavors contain half and full, there is wisdom liberated through skillful means; when half and full contain the five flavors, there is skillful means liberated through wisdom. The reversed order of the two sentences reveals support in both directions: wisdom is not separate from skillful means, and skillful means is not separate from wisdom. The provisional and real thereby range together, while advance and withdrawal each find their proper place.

The provisional and real range together like a bird’s two wings. Only when both wings have strength at once can flight be accomplished. The provisional can still be applied according to faculties, while the real can still indicate that to which the teaching returns. When the two move together, advance and withdrawal each find their proper place.

How Are Half and Full Situated within the Five Flavors?

The Avataṃsaka occupies the milk flavor, revealing the sudden and full Mahāyāna family estate: it clarifies only the one real and is full without being half. The Tripiṭaka occupies the curds flavor; like the poor son still engaged in hired labor, it practices only skillful means and is half without being full. Vaipulya occupies the raw-ghee flavor, setting half and full against one another and using the full to rebuke the half. The Great Prajñā occupies the refined-ghee flavor, carrying the half while discussing the full: the half is shared by the three vehicles, while the full belongs exclusively to bodhisattvas. The Lotus occupies the flavor of clarified essence, entrusting the family wealth and abolishing the half to clarify the full.

The five positions each possess their own function. Milk is full without being half, and curds half without being full, revealing the two extremes. Raw ghee sets half and full in opposition, refined ghee carries the half while discussing the full, and clarified essence abolishes the half to clarify the full. Half and full thereby each find their place according to the course of transformation.

How Do Half-Words Accomplish the Work of Full Words?

When the teaching reaches the Lotus, the half is abolished, yet the work it performed earlier becomes clear precisely here. If those of dull faculties had not been trained and matured through the skillful means of half-words, they could not open the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing through full words. The Tathāgata therefore earnestly praises skillful means because the half possesses the power to accomplish the full.

The śrāvakas’ understanding makes this function visible as its fruit. The unsurpassed cluster of jewels, never originally sought, comes of itself, and practitioners abide in real wisdom. From hired labor and receiving instruction, skillful means brings people to the place where the family wealth comes of itself and real wisdom becomes their dwelling. Half and full mutually accomplishing one another means precisely that this course of transformation reaches completion.

Through the Eye of the Shiqian

Zhanran first divides the passage into the impediment in using either alone and the direct clarification of mutual accomplishment. Mutual accomplishment is then divided into briefly clarifying freedom from the faults and directly judging each flavor. The five flavors form one path of vertical progress, and every flavor requires half and full to accomplish one another; yet the Avataṃsaka is only full, while the latter four flavors are either single or carry another. Mutual accomplishment therefore does not mean that every flavor contains one fixed half and one fixed full.

The Mirror further explains “wisdom liberated through skillful means” as wisdom obtaining skillful means and thereby being liberated, and “skillful means liberated through wisdom” as skillful means obtaining wisdom and thereby being liberated. The provisional and real ranging together therefore means that each benefits the other. The final passage distinguishes the transforming teacher’s praise from the śrāvakas’ understanding: the former clarifies the half’s power to accomplish the full, while the latter reveals the real benefit obtained through training and maturation. When the half is abolished, skillful means has already brought the practitioner to the place opened by full words.

考據Apparatus

This unit makes the two axes of the five flavors and half and full mutually accomplish one another. It first identifies the fault in using either alone, then judges each flavor in the sequence of the Avataṃsaka, Tripiṭaka, Vaipulya, Great Prajñā, and Lotus, and finally uses the Tathāgata’s praise of skillful means and the śrāvakas’ understanding to show that the half can accomplish the full. Although the passage is short, its scriptural scenes are dense. Wording from scripture, the treatise master’s synopses, and judgments from later commentary must remain distinct.

1. Doctrinal-Outline Placement

This unit occurs within the fifth chapter, the separate explanation of Classifying the Teaching. It begins with 「三、約五味半滿相成者」 tr. “Third, explaining how the five flavors and half and full mutually accomplish one another”〔T1716 0809a10〕 and ends with 「半滿相成,意在此也。」 tr. “The intent of half and full mutually accomplishing one another lies precisely here”〔T1716 0809a26〕. On the same line, 「四、明合不合者」 tr. “Fourth, clarifying correspondence and non-correspondence”〔T1716 0809a26〕 has already entered the next unit. The root text consists of one paragraph whose argumentative movement has four levels: the fault in using the five flavors or half and full alone; the general meaning of the two axes mutually accomplishing one another; the direct judgment flavor by flavor; and the half’s power to accomplish the full together with the śrāvakas’ understanding.

The corresponding passage in the Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian begins with 「三明半滿相成中意」 tr. “Third, clarifying the intent within half and full mutually accomplishing one another”〔T1717 0959b10〕 and ends with 「次述聲聞領解。」 tr. “Next, setting out the śrāvakas’ understanding”〔T1717 0959c07〕. The next line, 「四明合不合中二:先總明來意」 tr. “The fourth, clarifying correspondence and non-correspondence, has two parts: first, generally clarifying the intent of its arising”〔T1717 0959c08〕, has turned to the following unit. Zhanran first judges the initial level as 「初明單用有妨」 tr. “first clarifying the impediment in using either alone”〔T1717 0959b13〕 and the second as 「下正明相成。」 tr. “below, directly clarifying mutual accomplishment”〔T1717 0959b14〕. Direct clarification of mutual accomplishment is further divided into a brief clarification that leaves behind the faults and a direct judgment period by period; the direct judgment is then divided into assigning the five flavors and clarifying the function of half and full.

The whole unit belongs to teaching by Zhiyi recorded by Guanding. No marker in the passage changes into Guanding’s private explanation. Only much later does the Shiqian say 「是章安雜錄」 tr. “this is a miscellaneous record by Zhang’an”〔T1717 0962a04〕; that later statement cannot be projected backward to reclassify the authorial layer of the present unit.

2. Formation and Transmission

The origin account of the root treatise records that Zhiyi taught the Profound Meaning at Jiangling and Guanding received, recorded, and transcribed it. It also expressly records that the Xuanyi and Wenju each comprised ten fascicles〔T1716 0681a16–23〕. The present unit contains no marker of additional wording by the recorder and is therefore read according to the title attribution as teaching by Zhiyi recorded by Guanding.

3. Scriptures and Treatises Cited by Zhiyi

The unit does not write every scene as an explicit citation, but it densely draws upon the five flavors and half and full in the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, the pairings of wisdom and skillful means in the Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa Sūtra, and the poor-son parable and śrāvaka understandings in the Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma. The following twelve groups record the full inventory while preserving the separate graphs of the root treatise and the received texts.

NodeWording in the root treatiseVerification in received texts and relationship
The five flavors arising in sequenceThe root treatise follows the sequence milk, curds, raw ghee, refined ghee, and clarified essence, assigning them to the Avataṃsaka, Tripiṭaka, Vaipulya, Great Prajñā, and Lotus〔T1716 0809a16–23〕.The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says, 「善男子! “Good man, it is like milk coming from a cow, curds from milk, raw ghee from curds, refined ghee from raw ghee, and clarified essence from refined ghee; clarified essence is supreme”〔T374 0449a05〕. It further says, 「善男子! tr. “Good man, the Buddha is likewise: from the Buddha emerge the twelve divisions of scripture; from the twelve divisions emerges sūtra; from sūtra emerges the vaipulya scripture; from the vaipulya scripture emerges the perfection of wisdom; and from the perfection of wisdom emerges great nirvāṇa, like clarified essence”〔T374 0449a09〕. The received text writes 『穌』 while the root treatise writes 『蘇』. The received sequence of teachings ends in great nirvāṇa, whereas the root treatise separately uses the five flavors to gather the preceding teachings. Both are recorded side by side without adjudication.
Half-words and full wordsThe root treatise carries half and full throughout the five flavors and says that the half has the power to accomplish the full〔T1716 0809a10–26〕.The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says, 「半字者謂九部經,毘伽羅論者所謂方等大乘經典。」 tr. “Half-words refers to the scriptures of nine divisions, while the Vyākaraṇa Treatise refers to vaipulya Great Vehicle scriptures”〔T374 0390c29〕. It further says, 「如彼長者教半字已,次為演說毘伽羅論;我今亦爾,為諸弟子說於半字九部經已,次為演說毘伽羅論,所謂如來常存不變。」 tr. “Just as that elder, having taught half-words, next expounded the Vyākaraṇa Treatise, so too, after teaching my disciples the nine divisions of scripture as half-words, I next expound the Vyākaraṇa Treatise, namely that the Tathāgata constantly exists without change”〔T374 0391a08〕. “The meaning of half-words is the basis of all afflictive discourse and is therefore called half-words. Full words are the basis of all discourse on wholesome Dharmas”〔T374 0414a29〕. The root treatise draws upon this opposition of small and great to configure the five flavors; no single one of these received passages exhausts its meaning.
Two wings and ranging togetherThe root treatise says, 「權實俱遊,如鳥二翼,雖復俱遊,行藏得所。」 tr. “The provisional and real range together like a bird’s two wings; although they range together, advance and withdrawal each find their proper place”〔T1716 0809a15〕.The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra separately has, 「鳥有二種:一名迦隣提,二名鴛鴦,遊止共俱,不相捨離。」 tr. “There are two kinds of birds: one is called Jialinti and the other a mandarin duck; in roaming and resting they remain together and do not abandon one another”〔T374 0414b19〕; 「進止常與三衣鉢具,終不捨離,如鳥二翼。」 tr. “In movement and rest one always remains with the three robes and bowl and never abandons them, like a bird’s two wings”〔T374 0433a02〕; and 「大仙! tr. “Great seer, just as a cart with two wheels can carry a load, a bird with two wings is capable of flight”〔T374 0450a03〕. The root treatise combines the language of two wings and ranging together to express mutual support between provisional and real. No single continuous sentence in the received text matches the entire root sentence.
The two liberations of wisdom and skillful meansThe root treatise says, 「五味有半滿,則有慧方便解;半滿有五味,有方便慧解;」 tr. “When the five flavors contain half and full, there is wisdom liberated through skillful means; when half and full contain the five flavors, there is skillful means liberated through wisdom”〔T1716 0809a13〕.The Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa Sūtra has the two distinct orders, 「又無方便慧縛,有方便慧解;無慧方便縛,有慧方便解。」 tr. “Again, wisdom without skillful means is bound, while wisdom with skillful means is liberated; skillful means without wisdom is bound, while skillful means with wisdom is liberated”〔T475 0545b06〕. It then separately explains, 「何謂有方便慧解? tr. “What is meant by wisdom being liberated through skillful means? It means not adorning buddha-lands or bringing sentient beings to fulfillment with a mind of craving and views, while remaining tireless in self-discipline amid Dharmas that are empty, signless, and without activity; this is called wisdom being liberated through skillful means”〔T475 0545b10〕; and 「何謂有慧方便解? tr. “What is meant by skillful means being liberated through wisdom? It means leaving behind such afflictions as craving, anger, and wrong views, planting the roots of the many virtues, and dedicating them to unsurpassed complete awakening; this is called skillful means being liberated through wisdom”〔T475 0545b15〕. The two word orders cannot be merged.
Vaipulya rebukeThe root treatise says, 「若方等彈訶,則半滿相對,以滿斥半,於漸成生蘇。」 tr. “In the Vaipulya rebukes, half and full are set against one another and the full rebukes the half; within the gradual, this becomes raw ghee”〔T1716 0809a18〕.The Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa Sūtra provides a representative scene when Vimalakīrti tells Pūrṇa, 「唯,富樓那! “Pūrṇa, first enter concentration and contemplate this person’s mind; only then teach Dharma. Do not put defiled food into a precious vessel”〔T475 0540c26〕. Pūrṇa concludes, 「我念聲聞不觀人根,不應說法,是故不任詣彼問疾。」 tr. “I reflect that śrāvakas do not contemplate people’s faculties and should not teach Dharma; therefore I am not fit to visit him and inquire after his illness”〔T475 0541a10〕. This closes a scene in which the great rebukes the small, but Vaipulya is a class of teaching, and T475 is not made its exclusive representative.
The sudden and full AvataṃsakaThe root treatise says, 「若《華嚴》頓滿大乘家業,但明一實,不須方便,唯滿不半,於漸成乳。」 tr. “As for the Avataṃsaka, the sudden and full Mahāyāna family estate clarifies only the one real and does not require skillful means; it is only full and not half, and within the gradual it becomes milk”〔T1716 0809a16〕.The Mahāvaipulya Buddhāvataṃsaka Sūtra opens, 「一時,佛在摩竭提國寂滅道場始成正覺。」 tr. “At one time, the Buddha was in the country of Magadha at the place of quiescent extinction, where he had just attained perfect awakening”〔T278 0395a07〕. The gathered assembly in its opening section begins with 「與十佛世界微塵數等大菩薩俱,其名曰:普賢菩薩」 tr. “together with great bodhisattvas equal in number to the motes of dust in ten buddha-worlds; among them was the bodhisattva Universally Worthy (Samantabhadra)”〔T278 0395b11〕. “Sudden and full,” “only full and not half,” and “milk” are Tiantai judgments, not the scripture’s self-designations.
The Tripiṭaka as hired laborThe root treatise says, 「三藏客作,但是方便,唯半不滿,於漸成酪。」 tr. “The Tripiṭaka is hired labor and only skillful means; it is only half and not full, and within the gradual it becomes curds”〔T1716 0809a17〕.The hired-labor wording derives from the poor-son parable in the Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma: 「爾時窮子雖欣此遇,猶故自謂客作賤人。」 tr. “At that time, although the poor son rejoiced in this encounter, he still regarded himself as a lowly hired laborer”〔T262 0017a26〕. The root treatise uses the scene in which father and son have not recognized one another and the poor son regards himself as hired labor to assign the Tripiṭaka to the flavor of curds. Tripiṭaka is a class of teaching; this class-name does not uniquely identify a single scripture.
Receiving instruction in the Great PrajñāThe root treatise says, 「若《大品》領教,帶半論滿,半則通為三乘,滿則獨為菩薩,於漸成熟蘇。」 tr. “As for receiving instruction in the Great Prajñā, it carries the half while discussing the full: the half is shared by the three vehicles, while the full belongs exclusively to bodhisattvas; within the gradual it becomes refined ghee”〔T1716 0809a19〕.In the Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra, the Buddha commands Subhūti, 「汝當教諸菩薩摩訶薩般若波羅蜜,如諸菩薩摩訶薩所應成就般若波羅蜜。」 tr. “You should teach the bodhisattva-mahāsattvas the perfection of wisdom, in the manner in which bodhisattva-mahāsattvas should accomplish the perfection of wisdom”〔T223 0230b22〕. In the same scene, 「即時諸菩薩摩訶薩及聲聞大弟子、諸天等作是念」 tr. “At that time, the bodhisattva-mahāsattvas, the great śrāvaka disciples, the devas, and the others thought”〔T223 0230b24〕. The parable-language of receiving instruction appears in the Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma: 「爾時窮子,即受教勅,領知眾物,金銀珍寶及諸庫藏,而無悕取一飡之意。」 tr. “At that time the poor son received the command, took charge of and came to know the many things—gold, silver, precious treasures, and the various storehouses—yet had no thought of desiring so much as one meal from them”〔T262 0017b04〕. Carrying the half while discussing the full is the treatise master’s classificatory assignment, not a category established by either scripture itself.
Entrusting wealth and opening knowing-and-seeing in the LotusThe root treatise says, 「若《法華》付財,廢半明滿,」 tr. “As for the Lotus entrusting wealth, it abolishes the half and clarifies the full”〔T1716 0809a21〕, and further says, 「若無半字方便,調熟鈍根,則亦無滿字開佛知見,於漸成醍醐。」 tr. “If there were no skillful means of half-words to train and mature those of dull faculties, there would likewise be no full words opening the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing; within the gradual, this becomes clarified essence”〔T1716 0809a21〕.The poor-son parable in the Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma says, 「今我所有一切財物,皆是子有,先所出內,是子所知。」 tr. “All the wealth I now possess belongs to my son; all that was formerly paid out or taken in was known by this son”〔T262 0017b14〕, and 「我本無心有所希求,今此寶藏自然而至。」 tr. “Originally I had no thought of seeking anything, yet now this treasury of jewels has come of itself”〔T262 0017b16〕. The causes and conditions of the one great matter further include, 「欲令眾生開佛知見,使得清淨故,出現於世;」 tr. “Because they wish to enable sentient beings to open the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing and become purified, buddhas appear in the world”〔T262 0007a24〕. Entrusting wealth is the root treatise’s synopsis, while opening the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing is verbatim in the received text. Abolishing the half must still be read together with maturation and accomplishing the full.
The Tathāgata praising skillful meansThe root treatise says, 「如來殷勤稱歎方便者,半有成滿之功。」 tr. “The Tathāgata earnestly praises skillful means because the half has the power to accomplish the full”〔T1716 0809a23〕.In the Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma, the wording originally occurs in the assembly’s question, 「今者、世尊何故慇懃稱歎方便而作是言:」 tr. “Why does the World-Honored One now so earnestly praise skillful means and speak these words?”〔T262 0006b01〕. The root treatise writes 『殷勤』 while the received text writes 『慇懃』; the root treatise also turns the question into a statement within its argument. Both forms and both layers remain distinct.
The four great śrāvakas and the cluster of jewelsThe root treatise first says, 「四大聲聞領解。」 tr. “The four great śrāvakas understood”〔T1716 0809a24〕 and then cites, 「無上寶聚,不求自得,」 tr. “The unsurpassed cluster of jewels came without being sought”〔T1716 0809a25〕.The Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma first lists, 「爾時慧命須菩提、摩訶迦旃延、摩訶迦葉、摩訶目犍連,從佛所聞未曾有法,」 tr. “At that time, the venerable Subhūti, Mahākātyāyana, Mahākāśyapa, and Mahāmaudgalyāyana heard from the Buddha a Dharma they had never heard before”〔T262 0016b08〕. In the recapitulating verse spoken on their behalf by Mahākāśyapa, it says, 「無上寶聚,不求自得。 “The unsurpassed cluster of jewels came without being sought. It is like a child”〔T262 0017c13〕. The short sentence in the root treatise agrees with the received wording, but the entry point of the four persons and the speaker of the verse must remain distinct.
Abiding in real wisdomThe root treatise continues, 「安住實智中者,皆由半滿相成,意在此也。」 tr. “Those who abide in real wisdom all do so through half and full mutually accomplishing one another; the intent lies precisely here”〔T1716 0809a25〕.In the Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma, this sentence occurs in Śāriputra’s verse: 「疑悔永已盡,安住實智中。」 tr. “Doubt and regret are forever ended, and I abide in real wisdom”〔T262 0011b06〕. This is not the same speaking scene as the preceding four great śrāvakas. The root treatise places the two kinds of understanding side by side as evidence for half and full mutually accomplishing one another.

4. Essential Explanations from the Shiqian [the Mirror]

Zhanran first says that although this unit temporarily sets aside the preceding three characteristics of the sudden, gradual, and indeterminate, the two meanings of half and full must still accomplish one another before the impediments in classifying all the Buddha’s teaching can be resolved. If the five flavors are presented without mutual accomplishment, then 「五味之處雖然,若不論相成於理未盡。」 tr. “Although the places of the five flavors are so, if mutual accomplishment is not discussed, the principle remains incomplete”〔T1717 0959b12〕. He divides the unit generally into the impediment in using either alone and the direct clarification of mutual accomplishment. Using only the five flavors yields skillful means without real wisdom; using only half and full yields real wisdom without skillful means and loses the benefit to faculties through the provisional gateways of raw and refined ghee.

Upon entering the direct clarification, the Shiqian states, 「次正明中意則不爾,互相成益」 tr. “Next, in the direct clarification, the intent is not so: they mutually accomplish and benefit one another”〔T1717 0959b22〕. “The five flavors form one path of vertical progress, and in every flavor half and full mutually accomplish one another. Further, within every flavor there are both the secret and the indeterminate”〔T1717 0959b23〕. The two-way relation of wisdom and skillful means is judged as, 「是則慧得方便,故慧解。 tr. “Thus wisdom obtains skillful means, and therefore wisdom is liberated; skillful means obtains wisdom, and therefore skillful means is liberated. The provisional and real ranging together is clarified precisely here”〔T1717 0959b24〕. Mutual accomplishment is therefore mutual support, not a merging of the five flavors and half and full into one meaning.

The direct clarification of mutual accomplishment is further divided into briefly clarifying freedom from the faults and, from the Avataṃsaka onward, making the direct judgment〔T1717 0959b26〕. Their nonseparation still means that 「半滿相對,有開有合。」 tr. “Half and full are set against one another, with opening and combining”〔T1717 0959b27〕. The Shiqian explains the scriptural basis for the sequence of five flavors: 「今家五味次第,唯用《大經》,為有所據。 tr. “Our tradition’s sequence of the five flavors uses only the Great Scripture as its basis. Yet the intent of the various teachings is scattered throughout the scriptures, while the text of the Great Scripture only briefly gathers and indicates the preceding teachings”〔T1717 0959b28〕. This explains why T374 provides the basis for the sequence without exclusively containing every scene from every period.

In the direct judgment flavor by flavor, the Avataṃsaka is judged only full because 「華嚴正隔小明大,於彼初分永無聲聞」 tr. “The Avataṃsaka directly separates the small and clarifies the great; in its opening section there are never any śrāvakas”〔T1717 0959c04〕. The following four flavors are described thus: 「後之四味,或單或帶,可以意知,是故不同舊人所判,況復次第永異他人。」 tr. “The latter four flavors are either single or carry another; this can be understood from the meaning. They therefore differ from the judgments of earlier people, and still more does their sequence differ permanently from that of others”〔T1717 0959c05〕. The final passage is separately judged, 「次功能中二:初舉化主稱歎,次述聲聞領解。」 tr. “Next, function has two parts: first raising the transforming teacher’s praise, and then setting out the śrāvakas’ understanding”〔T1717 0959c07〕. The praise of skillful means and the two groups of śrāvaka understandings thus return together to the function of the half accomplishing the full.

5. Explanations of Various Masters

Zhiquan’s explanation section by section. The Fahua Jing Xuanqian Zhengshi says, 「五味則一道豎進等,此釋玄文,破南師但用五味,北師偏用半滿,今家以五味成半滿,半滿成五味,故云味味皆有半滿。」 tr. “The five flavors form one path of vertical progress, and so forth. This explains the Xuanyi text, refuting the Southern masters’ use of only the five flavors and the Northern masters’ partial use of half and full. Our tradition uses the five flavors to accomplish half and full and half and full to accomplish the five flavors; hence it says that every flavor possesses half and full”〔X0592 0631c19〕. It further explains advance and withdrawal with, 「權實俱遊,行藏得所,謂五味半滿俱用,故云俱遊。 tr. “The provisional and real range together, and advance and withdrawal find their proper places. This means that the five flavors and half and full are both used, and so it says they range together. The five flavors and half and full mutually accomplishing one another is called advance, meaning mutual accomplishment in the full words of the Lotus as clarified essence. Pervading only the four flavors through half and full is called withdrawal, meaning not reaching the full words of the Lotus as clarified essence. Further, ranging together is discussing mutual accomplishment, while advance and withdrawal are discussing the function of use and relinquishment”〔X0592 0631c23〕. This is a later Qing-dynasty explanation and is not made the sole lexical meaning of the root treatise. In judging each flavor, it further says, 「或單或帶,謂單是鹿苑,帶是方等、般若。 tr. “Either single or carrying another means that the Deer Park is single, while Vaipulya and Prajñā carry another. Vaipulya carries the Tripiṭaka half, while Prajñā carries the Shared half. The Lotus abolishes the half; its clarification of the full is easy to understand and is therefore abbreviated”〔X0592 0632a07〕. It also distinguishes two earlier judgments: 「不同古人,指但用五味古人,即定林等。 tr. “‘Differing from ancient people’ points to ancient people such as Dinglin who used only the five flavors. The ancient person of Guangzhai who partially used half and full is Bodhiruci”〔0632a02〕; and 「不同舊人等,謂定林等。 tr. “‘Differing from earlier people’ means Dinglin and the others, who used milk coming from a cow as a simile for the Tripiṭaka teaching with characteristics before the twelfth year, through to using clarified essence coming from refined ghee as a simile for the permanently abiding Nirvāṇa teaching. Further, Bodhiruci regarded everything before the twelfth year as half and everything after the twelfth year as full”〔0632a08〕. These are recorded side by side without adjudication.

Zhili illuminates the five-flavor scenes of faculties and teachings together. The Guanyin Yishu Ji explains the poor son removing excrement with, 「急追付財稱怨大喚,徐語除糞歡喜隨來,乃施方便說三界苦,以畏苦故斷見思集,既革凡成聖,名轉乳為酪。」 tr. “When urgently pursued so that wealth could be entrusted to him, he complained and cried loudly. When spoken to gently about removing excrement, he joyfully followed. Skillful means were then applied by teaching the suffering of the three realms. Through fear of suffering, he severed the accumulation of deluded views and thoughts; having changed from ordinary to noble, this is called turning milk into curds”〔T1729 0952c06〕. It then explains Vaipulya rebuke, 「四教俱演橫攝眾機,小聞彈訶漸能慕大密得通益,鈍根菩薩益同二乘,調此等機得生酥味。」 tr. “All four teachings are expounded, horizontally gathering the many faculties. Those of the small hear the rebukes and gradually come to aspire to the great, secretly gaining the benefit of the Shared. Bodhisattvas of dull faculties receive the same benefit as the Two Vehicles. Training these faculties produces the flavor of raw ghee”〔T1729 0952c09〕. Its conclusion, 「應知約教明五味者,不取濃淡,但語相生,以其頓乳即醍醐故。」 tr. “One should know that when the five flavors are clarified according to the teachings, thickness and thinness are not taken; only their arising from one another is discussed, because the sudden milk is itself clarified essence”〔T1729 0952c11〕, shows that the five flavors here concern generative sequence, not merely differences in the richness of dairy products.

Zhiyuan reorganizes half and full with the five flavors. tr. “Rebuking the small and praising the great means rebuking the Tripiṭaka and praising the other three teachings. Carrying the half means carrying the Two Vehicles. As for abolishing the half and clarifying the full, if explained through the four teachings, the latter three all receive the name full. If considered within the Lotus and Nirvāṇa, the first three are all half-words and only the Perfect is called full”〔T1766 0034a15〕. It further says, 「正譬說教次第者,以從牛初出於乳,譬佛出世先說《華嚴》,乃至最後變成醍醐,譬佛最後說《法華》、《涅槃》也,」 tr. “The direct simile for the sequence of teachings uses milk first coming from a cow to symbolize the Buddha’s first teaching the Avataṃsaka upon appearing in the world, through to the final transformation into clarified essence, symbolizing the Buddha’s final teaching of the Lotus and Nirvāṇa”〔T1766 0034c14〕. Its explanation of entrusting work and entrusting wealth appears separately: 「委業領財者,用《法華》窮子喻也。 tr. “Entrusting the work and taking charge of the wealth uses the poor-son parable in the Lotus. This simile entrusts the Mahāyāna family estate in order to transform bodhisattvas. In the various Prajñā scriptures, it is mostly Subhūti, Śāriputra, and Pūrṇa who expound in response. Entrusting the wealth and settling the family relation means joining father and son and settling their natural kinship”〔T1766 0035a17〕.

Yanshou preserves variant forms in a continuous transcription. The Zongjing Lu expressly introduces its passage with, 「如法華玄義云。 tr. “As the Fahua Xuanyi says: concerning the five flavors and half and full mutually accomplishing one another”〔T2016 0621a09〕, and transcribes the text only through the first “the intent lies precisely here.” tr. “Half and full contain the five flavors; therefore there is skillful means liberated through wisdom”〔T2016 0621a13〕, adding the graph 『則』 and punctuating it differently from the root treatise. It also reads, 「如來慇懃稱歎方便者。 tr. “The Tathāgata earnestly praises skillful means because the half has the power to accomplish the full”〔T2016 0621a22〕, using 『慇懃』 where the root treatise has 『殷勤』. tr. “The intent lies precisely here. Next, distinguishing according to contemplation”〔T2016 0621a23〕, it changes topics. Its omission of the final evidence from the four great śrāvakas therefore establishes only the boundary of the excerpt and cannot prove that the root treatise lacked this passage.

Fazhao clearly distinguishes this from a mechanical assignment of half and full. The Fahua Jing San Dabu Dujiao Ji says, 「籤云五味則一道豎進,味味皆有半滿相成者,彼南師偏用五味,北師偏用半滿,今約五味半滿相成而用,則華嚴唯滿不半,乃至法華廢半明滿,非五味各有半滿也。」 tr. “The Shiqian says that the five flavors form one path of vertical progress and that every flavor has half and full mutually accomplishing one another. The Southern masters relied one-sidedly on the five flavors, while the Northern masters relied one-sidedly on half and full. When the five flavors and half and full are now used through mutual accomplishment, the Avataṃsaka is only full and not half, through to the Lotus abolishing the half and clarifying the full; it is not that each of the five flavors separately contains both half and full”〔X0585 0009a22〕. Its meaning corresponds to the Shiqian’s statement that the Avataṃsaka is only full and the latter four flavors are either single or carry another, but the final sentence remains Fazhao’s later explanation and is not passed off as Zhanran’s original wording.

6. Terminology

The five flavors. Milk, curds, raw ghee, refined ghee, and clarified essence form one path of vertical progress. The root treatise assigns them in sequence to the Avataṃsaka, Tripiṭaka, Vaipulya, Great Prajñā, and Lotus. In the present unit, the five flavors mark the sequence of teachings, not merely a hierarchy of value.

Half and full. The half is connected with skillful means and the gateways of the three vehicles, while the full is connected with the one real and the gateway of bodhisattvas. According to the flavor, the two can be used singly, set in opposition, carried together, or abolished and converged. They cannot be flattened into “wrong” and “correct.”

Mutual accomplishment. The five flavors keep the configuration of half and full within a before-and-after sequence, while half and full make the opening and combining of provisional and real within the five flavors visible. Mutual accomplishment means mutual benefit, not that the two sets of names are synonyms.

Wisdom liberated through skillful means; skillful means liberated through wisdom. In the first, wisdom obtains skillful means and is liberated; in the second, skillful means obtains wisdom and is liberated. The word order identifies what is liberated by means of what.

The provisional and real range together; advance and withdrawal find their proper places. The provisional and real are like a bird’s two wings: they move together while each retains its function. The root treatise does not define advance and withdrawal word by word. Zhiquan’s reading of ranging together as mutual accomplishment and advance and withdrawal as use and relinquishment is one later explanation.

Sudden and full, hired labor, rebuke, receiving instruction, entrusting wealth. These five expressions respectively reveal the Avataṃsaka’s Mahāyāna family estate, the Tripiṭaka’s poor son engaged in hired labor, Vaipulya’s use of the full to rebuke the half, the Great Prajñā’s carrying the half while discussing the full, and the Lotus wealth returning to the son. They are the treatise master’s classifications and assignments of similes, not identically named sections established by the scriptures themselves.

The power to accomplish the full. The skillful means of half-words can train and mature those of dull faculties, making possible the opening of the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing through full words. Abolishing the half and clarifying the full does not erase the prior work of maturation performed by skillful means.

7. Similes · Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward

Only with two wings is a bird capable of flight; this unit borrows that image for the provisional and real ranging together. The wings do not replace one another but enable flight. The poor-son parable further links the Mahāyāna family estate, hired labor, receiving instruction, and entrusting wealth. From regarding oneself as a hired laborer and taking charge of the many things without desiring them, to all the wealth belonging to the son, the before-and-after sequence of the teaching becomes a process of father and son recognizing one another and the family estate returning to the son.

Read with the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, the flavors arising from one another supply the vertical structure of progress, while half-words and full words supply the opening and combining of small and great. Read with the Vimalakīrti-nirdeśa Sūtra, wisdom obtaining skillful means and skillful means obtaining wisdom preserve two-way mutual support. Read with the Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma, the praise of skillful means, the cluster of jewels coming of itself, and abiding in real wisdom return classification of the teaching to sentient beings’ understanding.

This unit carries forward the preceding three characteristics of the sudden, gradual, and indeterminate by showing that the sequence of the five flavors becomes complete only through half and full mutually accomplishing one another. The next unit then distinguishes correspondence and non-correspondence among the various classifications. This short passage therefore turns the preceding sequence of teachings and periods into a testable opening and combining of the provisional and real and establishes a measure for the subsequent analysis of the various explanations.

8. Placement of the Editions

First, this unit takes T1716 as its base. Its body begins at 0809a10 and ends within the same paragraph at 0809a26. Although the next unit likewise begins at 0809a26, the byte ranges of the two passages do not overlap. Every page-line anchor is tied to the nearest line number preceding the first graph of the citation rather than using the opening anchor of the entire paragraph for every shorter quotation.

Second, the body range of this unit contains no Taishō variant-reading markers and no interlinear notes. This zero value follows from a closed count of the elements in the entire paragraph and is not inferred from zero occurrences of a single term.

Third, the direct commentary on this unit in the Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian contains two groups of Taishō variants. At 0959b14, the body reads 『云』 while a variant reads 『云云』; at 0959b25, the body reads 『則』 while a variant reads 『則解』. Both groups belong only to the later T1717 commentarial layer and are not listed backward as variants in the present T1716 unit.

Fourth, the Zongjing Lu excerpt has an additional graph 『則』 relative to T1716 and differs in the forms 『殷勤/慇懃』 and in punctuation. It is a later witness of continuous transcription and does not alter the base text. Tripiṭaka and Vaipulya are also classes of teaching; although representative scenes can be located, they are not forcibly tied to single exclusive scriptures.

Fifth, later summary expressions for the five flavors and half and full can be used for this unit only when marked in the apparatus or later-commentarial layer as later terminology. The present unit itself remains anchored in its actual wording: five flavors, half and full, single, carrying, abolishing, and mutual accomplishment.
