心要Essence

Why is the most valuable medicine not necessarily the most useful at this moment? Because medicine has its value, a patient has particular needs, and taking medicine has its proper time. A valuable medicine that does not correspond to the illness brings no benefit when taken; an inexpensive medicine that does correspond can enable a person to turn from ordinary to noble. This does not make the inexpensive medicine superior. It shows that the good physician truly sees the person before him.

The Buddha’s prescription possesses twelve medicines, three of them especially valuable. Sharp-witted bodhisattvas can take them all, while the grave illness of the Two Vehicles calls for contraction to nine. Complete and contracted use come from the same good physician. The difference is not that one prescription is true and the other false, but how it must be used to cure. Milk and curds here express only sequence through successive arising; they do not rank teachings by richness or thinness.

The five flavors also fall upon a person’s maturation. Unchanged views and thoughts are like milk, severing delusion like curds, being rebuked and subdued like raw ghee, receiving and recognizing Dharma like refined ghee, and breaking ignorance and opening the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing like clarified essence. The teaching does not change its substance with the person, but a person’s mind can mature. The same Avataṃsaka is therefore milk for lesser faculties and clarified essence for great faculties.

Some are like a cow eating the Forbearance herb on Snow Mountain and obtain clarified essence in one flavor. Some are like milk successively producing curds, raw ghee, refined ghee, and clarified essence and must traverse the whole course. Others are like poison placed in milk, whose power pervades all five flavors, and gain entry at the second, third, or fourth flavor. Direct attainment, gradual maturation, and entry midway are all real pathways of capacities.

Even the periods of teaching must be viewed in this way. The rising sun first illuminates the high mountains, and its afterglow still shines on the lofty ridges as it sets. One meaning may be stated explicitly at a particular time and still extend through beginning and end. The specific lets us see what was taught then; the shared lets us see that meaning is not cut off by a period.

The heart of resolving questions is to stop measuring everyone with one ruler. See how profound a Dharma is, and also how much this person can receive. See the fixed limits of a teaching, and also how its meaning extends. See clarified essence as upright and solely one, and also see sentient beings mature through one flavor, five flavors, or two, three, and four flavors. True completeness does not mean handing over everything on every occasion. It means abandoning none of the possible ways of entry.

Plain reading

The fifth topic is Resolving Questions. It has three meanings: first, distinguishing from the perspectives of the shared and the specific; second, distinguishing according to benefit and nonbenefit; third, distinguishing within each of the various teachings.

Distinguishing from the Perspectives of the Shared and the Specific

First come the shared and the specific. If the five flavors and half and full are discussed specifically, each has fixed limits. If they are discussed as shared, they extend through beginning and end.

The Avataṃsaka, for example, is the sudden teaching as the milk flavor. Specifically, it occurs only at the beginning. As shared, it extends all the way to the later teachings. The Sūtra of Immeasurable Meanings therefore says, “Next he taught prajñā and cultivation over successive kalpas, the oceanic emptiness of the Avataṃsaka.” The Lotus integrates all into the Buddha’s wisdom. This is the Avataṃsaka extending through these two scriptures.

The Sutra on Resolving Doubts concerning the Semblance Dharma also says: “In today’s seated assembly, innumerable beings each see differently. Some see the Tathāgata enter nirvāṇa. Some see the Tathāgata abide in the world for one eon, one eon minus a portion, or immeasurable eons. Some see the Tathāgata’s body as sixteen feet tall, some see a small body, and some see a great body. Some see the recompense-body in the ocean of worlds of the Lotus Treasury teaching the mind-ground Dharma-gate to hundreds of thousands of millions of Śākyamuni Buddhas. Some see the Dharma-body as equal to empty space, without discrimination, without marks, and unobstructed, pervading and equal to the Dharma realm. Some see this place as only mountains, forests, earth, and sand; some see the seven treasures; some see this place as where the buddhas of the past, present, and future practice the path; and some see this place as precisely the inconceivable realm of the buddhas and real Dharma.”

When the sun first rises, it illuminates the high mountains first. When the sun is about to set, its afterglow should likewise illuminate the lofty ridges. Thus the ocean of worlds of the Lotus Treasury extends even beyond nirvāṇa; how much more must it extend through the preceding teachings?

Next is the half-word sūtra teaching of the curds flavor. Specifically, it occurs in the second period. As shared, it also extends into the later teachings. Why? Kālodāyin directly received a prediction in the Lotus assembly. Later he entered a settlement and was killed, becoming the originating condition for establishing a precept. Śāriputra likewise served as the principal petitioner for the teaching in the Lotus assembly. After he entered extinction, Junti carried the three robes to the Buddha and asked a question; the remainder is abbreviated. Does this not show the Tripiṭaka extending into the later teachings?

The Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom says: “From the initial teaching at the Deer Park through the night of nirvāṇa, the discipline, concentration, and wisdom taught were collected into the treasuries of sūtra and the others.” One should therefore know that the Tripiṭaka extends into the later teachings.

The Vaipulya teaching sets half and full against one another and is the raw-ghee teaching. Specifically, it occurs in the third period. As shared, it also extends into the later teachings. Why? The “Dhāraṇī” says that predictions were formerly given to the śrāvakas at Rājagṛha, that predictions are now again given to them in Jeta Grove in Śrāvastī, and that predictions had previously been given to them at Vārāṇasī. Śāriputra says that the World-Honored One is not false and what he says is true, and therefore can give them predictions a second and a third time. Thus it is known that Vaipulya extends beyond the Lotus.

Prajñā carries the half while discussing the full and is the refined-ghee teaching. Specifically, it occurs in the fourth period. As shared, it extends through both beginning and end. Why? From the night of attaining the path through the night of nirvāṇa, the Buddha constantly taught prajñā. The Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom also says, “Subhūti asks whether they are certain or not certain.” One should therefore know that prajñā also extends into the later teachings.

Nirvāṇa is the full teaching of the clarified-essence flavor. Specifically, it occurs in the fifth period. As shared, it also extends to the beginning. Why? The Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom says, “From the initial arousal of mind, one constantly contemplates nirvāṇa and practices the path.” Could the preceding teachings have contained no bodhisattva who had aroused the mind and contemplated nirvāṇa?

The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says: “I sat at the place of awakening beneath the bodhi tree and first attained right awakening. At that time, bodhisattvas from worlds measureless as asaṃkhyeyas and Ganges sands also asked me this profound meaning. The meaning and merit of the phrases they asked were likewise all just so, equal and without difference. Asking in this way can benefit immeasurable sentient beings.” This shows the meaning of nirvāṇa extending into the earlier teachings.

If the manifest side of the Lotus is discussed, it is not seen in the earlier teachings. If the secret side is discussed, principle is originally without obstruction. Śāriputra therefore says, “Formerly I heard such Dharma from the Buddha and saw the bodhisattvas receive predictions of buddhahood.” Does this not establish that texts of shared predictions already existed in the past?

A person asks: The Nirvāṇa retraces and teaches four; Vaipulya directly opens four; the Distinct Teaching again has four. How should they be distinguished?

The answer says: The Nirvāṇa “takes up the four and universally enters buddha-nature.” The Distinct Teaching proceeds in sequence and sees buddha-nature only later. This branch of Vaipulya still says, “preserving realization, two do not see the nature.” The remainder is abbreviated.

Distinguishing According to Benefit and Nonbenefit

Second is resolving questions according to whether benefit is obtained. If the Avataṃsaka is milk and the Tripiṭaka is curds, it appears that the flavor of skillful means is rich while the Great Vehicle flavor is thin. This must be explained from three perspectives.

First, consider whether there is benefit in actual use. A valuable medicine that cannot treat the present illness does not suit the patient. An inexpensive medicine that fits the illness is what the patient needs. If a valuable medicine is unsuitable, taking it in vain brings no benefit.

When the Avataṃsaka was first taught, it could not yet bring profound benefit to beginners, and gradual faculties had not yet changed. For those two conditions, it was like milk. If gradual faculties receive the Tripiṭaka, they can sever the delusions of views and thought and gradually reduce the three poisons of greed, anger, and delusion. They thereby turn from ordinary beings into noble ones, like milk turning into curds. One cannot say that an inexpensive medicine surpasses a valuable one merely because it brings practical benefit, nor that a valuable medicine is inferior merely because it brings no benefit in that situation.

The Avataṃsaka is likewise. For lesser faculties it is like milk, while for great faculties it is like clarified essence. A simile takes only a partial resemblance and cannot be required to correspond in every respect.

Second, consider a good physician who possesses one secret prescription with twelve medicines, three of which are especially valuable. The physician is skilled at examining the signs of illness and knows whether the medicines should be increased or reduced. The physician never misses the condition or mistakenly applies a treatment.

The Buddha is likewise. His perfect prescription and wondrous treatment possess the twelve divisions of scripture; among them, teaching without being asked, vaipulya, and prediction are the most profound. Bodhisattvas have sharp wisdom and can take all twelve in full. The Two Vehicles have grave illnesses and use nine as their dose. If the prescription were not contracted for them, it would bring their illness no benefit. The uncontracted twelve are likened to milk, while the contracted nine are likened to curds. This simile takes only sequence through successive arising; it does not take richness or thinness, shallowness or depth.

Third, consider the practitioner’s mind. When the Avataṃsaka is taught, ordinary beings’ delusions of views and thought have not changed, and so they are said to be like milk. When the Tripiṭaka is taught, the delusions of views and thought are severed, and so they are said to be like curds. By the time of Vaipulya, practitioners have been rebuked, made ashamed, and subdued; they no longer claim that their realization is true and ultimate, and so they are like raw ghee. By the time of Prajñā, they receive the teaching’s instructions and recognize the dharmas, and so they are like refined ghee. By the time of the Lotus, they break ignorance, open the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing, receive predictions of buddhahood, and have purified minds, and so they are said to be like clarified essence.

When practitioners’ minds remain immature, the teaching itself has not changed. When practitioners’ minds mature, the teaching is named according to their maturation.

A person asks: Does one person receive all five flavors, or do five people each receive one flavor?

The answer says that there are people who receive only one flavor. Those whose disposition is purely of one kind in the Avataṃsaka assembly immediately obtain clarified essence without traversing all five flavors. The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says, “On Snow Mountain there is an herb; if a cow eats it, it immediately obtains clarified essence.”

There are also people who traverse all five flavors in sequence. Those of Lesser Vehicle disposition are like milk in relation to the sudden teaching and like curds in relation to the Tripiṭaka; they continue through clarified essence and only then reach the ultimate. The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says, “From a cow comes milk, and through successive arising clarified essence comes from ghee.”

There are also sharp-faculty bodhisattvas and śrāvakas who have not yet entered a stage. Some see the nature within the Tripiṭaka, which is traversing two flavors. Some see the nature within Vaipulya, which is traversing three flavors. Some see the nature within Prajñā, which is traversing four flavors, as with the three hundred bhikṣus. The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says, “Place poison in milk; the poison pervades the five flavors, and in each flavor it can kill a person.” This is the meaning here.

Distinguishing within the Various Teachings

Third is resolving questions by traversing the various teachings. The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says, “Ordinary beings are like milk, śrāvakas like curds, bodhisattvas like raw and refined ghee, and buddhas like clarified essence.” The present explanation first uses this simile to encompass the five periods of half and full. Ordinary beings possess no path for treating delusion and are entirely immature, like milk. Śrāvakas give rise to true wisdom and are all generally like curds. Bodhisattvas of the Shared Teaching and the Two Vehicles are like raw ghee. The Distinct Teaching is like refined ghee, and the Perfect Teaching like clarified essence.

The five flavors are now judged separately within each teaching.

First is the Tripiṭaka Teaching. The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says, “An ordinary being is like milk; a stream-enterer like curds; a once-returner like raw ghee; a non-returner like refined ghee; and an arhat, pratyekabuddha, and buddha like clarified essence.” Some leap over intermediate fruits and immediately obtain clarified essence. Others enter flavor by flavor in sequence. These are the three meanings within the Tripiṭaka Teaching.

Next are the five flavors within the Shared Teaching. Fascicle Thirty-Two of the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says: “The buddha-nature of ordinary beings is like milk mixed with blood. Blood is all afflictions such as ignorance and formations, while milk is the five wholesome aggregates. Therefore I say that complete awakening is attained from the various afflictions and five wholesome aggregates. Just as sentient beings’ bodies are all formed from semen and blood, so too is buddha-nature. Stream-enterers and once-returners have severed a small portion of the afflictions and are like true milk. A non-returner is like curds, an arhat like raw ghee, pratyekabuddhas through bodhisattvas of the tenth ground like refined ghee, and a buddha like clarified essence.” Cases of leaping over fruits are indeterminate; the remainder is abbreviated.

Next are the five flavors clarified within the Distinct Teaching itself. Fascicle Nine of the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says, “Sentient beings are like a newly calved cow whose blood and milk have not yet separated.” Śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas are like curds, bodhisattvas like raw and refined ghee, and the buddhas, World-Honored Ones, like clarified essence. Cases of leaping over fruits and indeterminate sequence are likewise present; the remainder is abbreviated.

Finally comes the Perfect Teaching. The Perfect Teaching has only one flavor. The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says, “On Snow Mountain there is an herb named Forbearance; if a cow eats it, it immediately obtains clarified essence.” Because the teaching is upright and solely one, the five flavors are not discussed as a sequence.

If distinctions are established within nondifference, however, the five flavors may be judged as arising in sequence according to identity in name through ultimate identity. The twelve divisions of scripture emerging from the Buddha are milk emerging from the Buddha, and the new physician uses milk as medicine. The five flavors may also be judged according to the four wholesome roots and the particular point at which they develop in each person.

義疏Exposition

Why do some people attain clarified essence at first hearing while others must traverse the whole course? When classifying the teaching reaches the resolution of questions, it no longer asks only where a particular scripture should be placed. It asks why the same account of the five flavors sometimes belongs specifically to one segment and sometimes extends through beginning and end; why the most valuable medicine may bring no immediate benefit while a contracted prescription cures the illness; and why one person needs only one flavor to attain clarified essence while another must traverse them flavor by flavor.

Master Zhiyi answers through a threefold inquiry: first distinguishing shared and specific, next benefit and nonbenefit, and finally placing the five flavors back within each of the various teachings. These are not three tables that replace one another, but three changes in the position from which the matter is viewed.

Fixed Limits Make It Possible to See How Meaning Extends through Beginning and End

The specific views the fixed limit of a teaching within one set of conditions. The shared follows the same meaning to see how it extends through beginning and end. As milk, the Avataṃsaka belongs specifically to the beginning, yet as shared it can extend later. The half-word sūtra as curds belongs specifically to the second period, yet also extends later. Vaipulya and Prajñā each have a specific period, while predictions and teaching between the two nights still disclose their shared reach. Nirvāṇa belongs specifically to the end, yet contemplation of nirvāṇa at the initial arousal of mind and profound questions asked at first right awakening make it extend earlier.

The sun first illuminates high mountains at sunrise and its afterglow still shines upon lofty ridges at sunset. The picture changes neither the mountains nor the sunlight; what changes are the two times of rising and setting. The Avataṃsaka is like first illumination at the beginning and afterglow at the end. The meaning of the ocean of worlds of the Lotus Treasury can therefore be seen from the beginning through even beyond nirvāṇa. Shared does not rename every intermediate teaching as the Avataṃsaka. It says that one profound meaning is not sealed within a single period.

The Tripiṭaka extending later is shown by two personal histories and one account of compilation. Kālodāyin received a prediction in the Lotus assembly, then later entered a settlement, was killed, and became the originating condition for establishing a precept. Śāriputra requested the teaching in the Lotus assembly, then later entered extinction, after which Junti carried the three robes to the Buddha. The discipline, concentration, and wisdom taught from the Deer Park through the night of nirvāṇa were also collected into the treasuries of sūtra and the others. Although the events differ, they all establish that the half-word teaching did not disappear after the second period.

Vaipulya uses predictions at Rājagṛha, Jeta Grove in Śrāvastī, and Vārāṇasī to show that it extends beyond the Lotus. Prajñā uses both constant teaching from the night of attaining the path through the night of nirvāṇa and Subhūti’s question about certainty and uncertainty to show that it extends through beginning and end. Nirvāṇa moves in the opposite direction, from later to earlier: if those who initially aroused the mind already contemplated nirvāṇa, and if bodhisattvas already asked the profound meaning when the Buddha first attained right awakening, the meaning of nirvāṇa cannot begin only in the final assembly.

The Lotus further has manifest and secret sides. On the manifest side, its present declaration of integration into the Buddha’s wisdom is not seen earlier. On the secret side, principle is without obstruction. Śāriputra’s former hearing of bodhisattvas receiving predictions of buddhahood becomes evidence for predictions extending through the past. Shared and specific therefore function like two focal lengths: one sees what was explicitly taught in that moment, while the other sees how the meaning passes through different moments.

The Boundary among Three Kinds of Four Lies in How Buddha-Nature Is Seen

After shared and specific, the root treatise poses a short question. The Nirvāṇa retraces and teaches four, Vaipulya directly opens four, and the Distinct Teaching again has four. How are the three distinguished?

The answer places each in its own position: Nirvāṇa takes up four and universally enters buddha-nature; the Distinct Teaching proceeds in sequence and sees buddha-nature later; Vaipulya preserves realization, while two do not see the nature. All three bear the same number four, but their functions are separated as universal entry, seeing later in sequence, and two not seeing the nature. Here resolving questions displays its task: it does not merge identical names immediately, but asks where each “four” takes the practitioner.

A Medicine’s Value Is Not the Same as Its Power to Cure at This Moment

The second resolution begins with a counterintuitive pairing. The Avataṃsaka is milk and the Tripiṭaka is curds: does this not make the flavor of skillful means rich and that of the Great Vehicle thin? Master Zhiyi does not use the physical properties of milk and curds to value the teachings. He first asks whether the patient actually benefits.

A valuable medicine that does not correspond to the illness brings no benefit when taken. An inexpensive medicine that corresponds to the illness can take effect. Beginners do not yet receive profound benefit from the Avataṃsaka, and gradual faculties have not yet turned; for those two conditions it is therefore called milk. When gradual faculties receive the Tripiṭaka, they can sever views and thought, gradually reduce the three poisons, and turn from ordinary to noble, like milk becoming curds.

The simile preserves both the value of the medicine and the timing of treatment. An effective inexpensive medicine does not thereby surpass the valuable medicine, and a valuable medicine that is temporarily ineffective does not thereby become inferior. For lesser faculties, the Avataṃsaka is like milk; for great faculties, it is clarified essence. The teaching has not changed. What the recipient can bear and the benefit received differ. The simile takes only this part of resemblance, preventing every physical property of milk from governing the doctrine.

Why Does the Good Physician Sometimes Use Only Nine of the Twelve Medicines?

The second medicine simile is more detailed. A good physician has a secret prescription containing twelve medicines, three of them especially valuable. The physician accurately examines the signs of illness, knows when to increase or reduce the prescription, and never misses the condition or applies a mistaken treatment.

The Buddha’s perfect prescription and wondrous treatment contain the twelve divisions of scripture. Among them, teaching without being asked, vaipulya, and prediction are the three most profound. Sharp-witted bodhisattvas can take all twelve. Because those of the Two Vehicles are gravely ill, nine are used as their dose. Giving them all twelve would leave the prescription perfect but might not benefit their illness. Complete use of twelve is likened to milk, while contracting the prescription to nine is likened to curds.

Here milk and curds carry only sequence through successive arising. The perfect prescription is first used in full and is later contracted according to illness. The before-and-after meaning lies in the physician’s diagnosis and administration, not in milk being thin and curds thick. The three most valuable medicines are not declared useless; they are temporarily withheld according to this patient’s condition. Completeness and correspondence to capacity are not competing standards. The physician’s skill lies precisely in making them correspond.

The Flavor Actually Falls upon the Practitioner’s Mind

The third explanation no longer speaks from the medicine of teaching itself, but from the practitioner’s mind. During the Avataṃsaka, ordinary beings’ views and thoughts have not changed and are therefore like milk. During the Tripiṭaka, views and thoughts are severed and are therefore like curds. During Vaipulya, practitioners are rebuked, made ashamed, and subdued, and no longer call their own attainment truly ultimate; they are therefore like raw ghee. During Prajñā, they receive the teaching and recognize the dharmas and are therefore like refined ghee. During the Lotus, they break ignorance, open the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing, receive predictions of buddhahood, and purify the mind and are therefore like clarified essence.

The five flavors thus trace the maturation of the mind in practice. While the practitioner’s mind remains immature, the teaching has not itself turned into another teaching. When the practitioner’s mind matures, the teaching receives a name in accordance with that maturation. The earlier statement that the Avataṃsaka is milk for lesser faculties but clarified essence for great faculties is explained in the same way: one teaching illuminates different degrees of maturation and therefore displays different flavor-names.

One Person or Five People Is Not a Choice with Only One Side

A person asks whether one person receives all five flavors or five persons each receive one flavor. The answer does not retain only one route.

First there is one person who receives only one flavor. Those whose disposition is purely of one kind within the Avataṃsaka immediately attain clarified essence and need not traverse the five flavors. On Snow Mountain there is an herb, and when the cow eats it, clarified essence is obtained. The herb, cow, and clarified essence disclose direct attainment upon first hearing.

There is also one person who traverses all five flavors in sequence. A person of Lesser Vehicle disposition is like milk when facing the sudden teaching and like curds upon receiving the Tripiṭaka, then passes through raw ghee and refined ghee before reaching the ultimate only at clarified essence. From the cow comes milk and, successively, curds, both ghees, and clarified essence. Cow, milk, curds, the two ghees, and clarified essence reveal one person’s maturation through time.

There are also sharp-faculty bodhisattvas and śrāvakas who have not yet entered a stage but see the nature at different points. Seeing the nature within the Tripiṭaka is called traversing two flavors. Seeing it within Vaipulya is traversing three. Seeing it within Prajñā is traversing four, with the three hundred bhikṣus given as the example. The number is counted from the flavor in which the nature is seen; two, three, and four each record the point of arrival.

Finally there is poison placed in milk. The poison pervades all five flavors, and each flavor can kill. The poison does not wait until clarified essence to become effective, just as a faculty capable of entry need not always proceed to the final flavor before receiving benefit. The three pictures—immediate clarified essence from the Forbearance herb, flavors arising successively from milk, and poison pervading every flavor—stand together. Direct attainment, sequential maturation, and entry midway all have a place.

How Does the Same Set of Five Flavors Appear within Each Teaching?

The third resolution first gives a general judgment: ordinary beings are like milk, śrāvakas like curds, bodhisattvas like raw and refined ghee, and buddhas like clarified essence. As a general statement of the five periods of half and full, ordinary beings have no path to treat delusion and are like untransformed milk; śrāvakas give rise to true wisdom and are like curds; bodhisattvas of the Shared Teaching and the Two Vehicles are like raw ghee; the Distinct Teaching is like refined ghee; and the Perfect Teaching is like clarified essence. This is a general view across different classes.

The perspective next moves inside each teaching. In the Tripiṭaka Teaching, ordinary beings, stream-enterers, once-returners, non-returners, and arhats together with pratyekabuddhas and buddhas are represented in sequence by milk, curds, raw ghee, refined ghee, and clarified essence. Some leap over intermediate fruits and obtain clarified essence directly, while others enter flavor by flavor. Sequential stages, sudden attainment, and differences of entry are all present.

Within the Shared Teaching, the buddha-nature of ordinary beings is like milk mixed with blood. Blood represents all afflictions such as ignorance and formations, while milk represents the five wholesome aggregates. Afflictions and the five wholesome aggregates jointly form the conditions for proceeding toward complete awakening, just as the body of a sentient being is formed from semen and blood. Stream-enterers and once-returners who have severed a small portion of the afflictions are like true milk; a non-returner like curds; an arhat like raw ghee; pratyekabuddhas through bodhisattvas of the tenth ground like refined ghee; and a buddha like clarified essence. Leaping over fruits is again indeterminate.

Within the Distinct Teaching, sentient beings are like a newly calved cow whose blood and milk have not separated. Śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas are like curds, bodhisattvas like raw and refined ghee, and buddhas like clarified essence. Here too, leaping over fruits can be indeterminate. Each correlation follows the names, stages, and flavor-sequence actually listed in its own passage. The five flavors are therefore not only one general chronology; they can also illuminate a course within one teaching.

The Perfect Teaching first speaks of only one flavor. On Snow Mountain there is an herb called Forbearance; when the cow eats it, it immediately obtains clarified essence. Because the teaching is upright and solely one, sequence through the five flavors is not placed first. If distinctions are established within nondifference, identity in name through ultimate identity may still be judged through five flavors arising in sequence. The twelve divisions emerging from the Buddha become milk emerging, and the new physician uses milk. The five flavors can also be distinguished according to the four wholesome roots and the point at which each person develops.

One flavor and five flavors no longer conflict. One flavor speaks of what is entered as upright and solely one. Five flavors speak of sequence in practitioners’ development and maturation. Direct attainment at first hearing, entry flavor by flavor, and leaping over levels can all be seen within one teaching.

Resolving Questions Does Not Break Apart; It Returns Each Explanation to Its Own Measure

The question of shared and specific separates the fixed limits of a particular teaching from the extension of its meaning. The question of benefit and nonbenefit separates the Dharma-medicine’s own value from its actual effect upon this patient. The question traversing the teachings separates the five flavors as a general framework from the five flavors within each individual teaching.

These three separations do not fragment doctrine. They allow sunlight to illuminate only the mountains actually present in the simile, the good physician to expand or contract the prescription according to the illness before him, milk and curds to bear only the meaning of successive arising, and the practitioner’s mind to bear immaturity and maturity. Each simile keeps its own power. Together they answer the initial difficulty: a teaching has fixed limits while its meaning can extend; a Dharma-medicine can be valuable while awaiting the corresponding capacity; and clarified essence can be solely one while sentient beings still mature by one, five, two, three, or four flavors.

Through the Eye of the Shiqian

Zhanran first illuminates shared and specific in two directions: the first four flavors extend from earlier to later, while Nirvāṇa and the Lotus extend from later to earlier. The two scriptures mentioned by the root treatise are identified as Prajñā and the Lotus. Because the high mountains illuminated at sunrise and sunset do not differ and the substance of the illumination is not separate, the Avataṃsaka’s extension through beginning and end receives a clear hinge.

The sūtra passage is further divided into brief establishment, establishment through two events, establishment through compilation, and general conclusion. Kālodāyin’s killing and the resulting precept and the three robes after Śāriputra’s extinction are supplemented by the Mirror; their source attributions still remain with their respective works. The three Vaipulya predictions are judged through Rājagṛha corresponding to the Lotus and Śrāvastī occurring after the Lotus. The two Prajñā proofs are one scriptural citation and one event; the first is not supplied with an additional title.

The answer on the three kinds of four is unfolded in the Mirror as the four levels of the Distinct Teaching’s ten abodes, ten practices, ten dedications, and entry into the grounds. Its subsequent question about training in eight in the abodes and sixteen in the practices is a further difficulty posed by Zhanran. This illumination allows Master Zhiyi’s original answer and the commentator’s development to follow one another without being merged.

Concerning benefit and nonbenefit, the Shiqian says the Avataṃsaka is milk only in the two respects that a capacity is not yet able to enter the great and that it is taught first. The Avataṃsaka’s other dimensions remain outside the partial simile. The good-physician simile then fixes complete use as first and contracted use as next. Milk and curds stand for sequence through successive arising rather than thickness and thinness.

One flavor, five flavors, and two, three, or four flavors are judged as three routes of sudden, gradual, and indeterminate. Two, three, and four are counted by seeing the nature upon reaching that flavor. This does not create three new practices; it answers how many flavors one person receives.

The passage traversing the teachings first gives a general judgment and then shows that every teaching can contain sudden, gradual, and indeterminate. The Mirror expressly separates the path of teaching from the path of realization: the path of teaching proceeds sequentially, while realization can leap over stages. Indeterminate leaping over fruits therefore does not destroy the establishment of stages in the teaching.

The final Perfect-Teaching passage is likewise illuminated as three meanings. Immediate clarified essence from the Forbearance herb is sudden; distinction within nondifference is gradual; and the twelve divisions emerging from the Buddha are the development of the indeterminate. Master Zhiyi says only identity in name through ultimate identity and the four wholesome roots. Correlating the first faith through wondrous awakening with particular flavors is Zhanran’s further stage-judgment.

The Mirror also uses the levels of severing delusion to explain the depth of development, placing the five-flavor stage-judgment in the practitioner’s actual progress rather than leaving it as only an arrangement of names.

Viewed through this Mirror, the heart of resolving questions is not to add another fixed table for the five flavors. It distinguishes the different work performed by one simile in relation to time, faculties, benefit, mind, and realization. The shared does not erase the specific, one flavor does not erase sequence, and leaping into realization does not erase the path of teaching. The threefold inquiry thus becomes the living eye of the preceding classification.

考據Apparatus

This unit follows the first four topics within the fifth topic, the characteristics of the teaching, and uses a threefold resolution of questions to gather the classifications through the five flavors and half and full: first it distinguishes the shared and the specific, next benefit and nonbenefit, and finally the five flavors again within each teaching. The doctrinal meaning comes from Master Zhiyi’s teaching, while the extant text was transmitted and recorded by Guanding. The outline below therefore preserves the wording of this passage in the Fahua Xuanyi (T1716) while marking the later explanations of the Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian (T1717) as a separate layer.

1. Doctrinal-Outline Placement

This unit begins with 「五、料簡者,為三意:一、約通別。 tr. “Fifth, resolving questions has three meanings: first, according to the shared and the specific; second, benefit and nonbenefit; third, according to the various teachings”〔T33 0809c01〕 and ends with 「就發中為五味也。」 tr. “Within their development, they form the five flavors”〔T33 0810c14〕. The next passage begins the sixth topic separately on the same line, 0810c14, and does not belong to this unit. The extant range is 0809c01–0810c14: twenty-three blocks, 2,004 characters, and 1,612 Han graphs.

The Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian opens its analysis with 「次料簡中,列章、解釋。」 tr. “Next, within resolving questions, there are listing the divisions and explanation”〔T33 0960a29〕 and ends the direct explanation with 「約此五味復論不定。」 tr. “According to these five flavors, the indeterminate is discussed again”〔T33 0961b23〕. According to the treatise’s three meanings and their internal questions and answers, the passage can be outlined as follows:

SequenceRangeMovement in the root treatiseContent
10809c01–02General listing of the three meaningsShared and specific, benefit and nonbenefit, traversing the various teachings
20809c02–16General outline of shared and specific and the AvataṃsakaThe specific has fixed limits; the shared extends from beginning to end; the Avataṃsaka extends later
30809c17–23Half-word sūtra as curdsTwo events and the formation of the collection establish extension to the later period
40809c23–29Vaipulya as raw gheePredictions in three places establish extension to the later period
50809c29–0810a03Prajñā as refined gheeConstant teaching between the two nights and the question of certainty
60810a03–11Nirvāṇa as clarified essenceInitial arousal and a question at first awakening establish extension to the earlier period
70810a11–13Manifest and secret aspects of the LotusIt is not seen earlier in the manifest; in the secret, principle is unobstructed
80810a14–16Question and answer on the three kinds of fourDistinguishing Nirvāṇa, Vaipulya, and the Distinct Teaching
90810a16–25Practical benefit and the partial simileA medicine’s value does not equal whether it benefits or fails to benefit a particular illness
100810a25–0810b03The good physician’s expansion and contractionTaking all twelve medicines or contracting them to nine; only successive arising is taken
110810b03–09According to the practitioner’s mindThe five flavors according to severing delusion, being rebuked, receiving Dharma, and opening knowing-and-seeing
120810b09–19Question and answer on how many flavors are receivedOne flavor, five flavors, and two, three, or four flavors listed together
130810b19–24General judgment while traversing the teachingsFirst correlating ordinary beings, śrāvakas, bodhisattvas, and buddhas with the five flavors
140810b24–28Five flavors in the Tripiṭaka TeachingSequential entry and leaping over fruits both retained
150810b28–0810c05Five flavors in the Shared TeachingFrom milk mixed with blood through clarified essence; ending with indeterminate leaping over fruits
160810c06–09Five flavors in the Distinct TeachingFrom blood and milk not yet separated through clarified essence; ending with indeterminate leaping over fruits
170810c09–14One flavor and five flavors in the Perfect TeachingUpright and solely one; distinctions may still be made within nondifference

All seventeen sections are the treatise master’s teaching as recorded by Guanding. This passage has no explicit marker introducing a separate appended statement by the recorder. Its questions and answers likewise belong to the argument of the root treatise and are not moved into a separate evaluation by Guanding.

2. Formation and Transmission

The formation and transmission of the work form one line through the account of origins. Guanding records Master Zhiyi’s teaching and writes, 「次在江陵,奉蒙玄義」 tr. “Next, in Jiangling, I reverently received the Profound Meaning”〔T33 0681a16〕. The later Guoqing Bailu (T1934) connects the hearing in Jiangling with Yuquan through 「至荊答地恩。 tr. “He went to Jing to repay the region’s kindness and built Yuquan Monastery; Zhang’an Guanding reverently received the Profound Meaning”〔T46 0823b28〕. The prefatory account also records 「《玄》、《文》各十卷。」 tr. “The Profound Meaning and the Words and Phrases each comprised ten fascicles”〔T33 0681a22〕, while the half-fascicle title bears 「天台智者大師說」 tr. “taught by Tiantai Master Zhiyi”〔T33 0681c28〕.

This line of transmission displays three layers—teaching, recording, and transmission. Master Zhiyi taught the meaning; Guanding heard it in Jiangling and transmitted the record; the Profound Meaning and Words and Phrases each became ten fascicles. Yuquan is the biographical setting connected by the later record and does not rewrite the wording “Jiangling” in the Fahua Xuanyi’s own prefatory account.

This unit lies in Fascicle Ten, Part One, whose fascicle title still attributes the teaching to Master Zhiyi. Its argument frequently uses scriptures, vinaya, treatises, and events involving particular persons as evidence, while the extant text repeatedly contains digests and variant wording. Transmission analysis must therefore preserve simultaneously the wording of the root treatise, that of the received scriptures and treatises, and the source identifications of the Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian. None replaces either of the other two.

3. Scriptures and Treatises Cited by Zhiyi

This inventory includes explicit citations, event allusions, and every five-flavor simile in the unit. The root-treatise column records only the form written in T1716, while the received-text column follows the canon number belonging to each work’s title line. When the two columns concern the same scene but differ in graphs, both are retained; the received text is not used to alter the root treatise.

1Sūtra of Immeasurable Meanings (T276)「次說般若歷劫修行,華嚴海空。」 tr. “Next he taught prajñā and cultivation over successive kalpas, the oceanic emptiness of the Avataṃsaka”〔T33 0809c04〕「次說方等十二部經、摩訶般若、華嚴海雲,演說菩薩歷劫修行」 tr. “Next he taught the twelve divisions of Vaipulya scripture, Mahāprajñā, and the oceanic cloud of the Avataṃsaka, expounding the bodhisattvas’ cultivation over successive kalpas”〔T09 0386b24〕The scene is secure; the twelve Vaipulya divisions, word order, and oceanic emptiness versus oceanic cloud differ.
2Sutra on Resolving Doubts concerning the Semblance Dharma (T2870)「今日坐中無央數眾,各見不同,或見如來入涅槃」 tr. “In today’s seated assembly, innumerable beings each see differently; some see the Tathāgata enter nirvāṇa”〔T33 0809c06〕「今日座中無央數眾各見不同。 tr. “In today’s assembly, innumerable beings each see differently. Some see the Tathāgata enter parinirvāṇa”〔T85 1337a05〕The long citations are structurally aligned; 坐/座, nirvāṇa/parinirvāṇa, and the punctuation differ.
3Sutra on Resolving Doubts concerning the Semblance Dharma (T2870)The root treatise additionally lists one eon minus a portion, pervading the Dharma realm in the same way, mountains, forests, earth, and sand, the seven treasures, and real Dharma.「或見法身同於虛空無有分別無相無礙遍周法界。」 tr. “Some see the Dharma-body as equal to empty space, without discrimination, without marks, and unobstructed, universally pervading the Dharma realm”〔T85 1337a10〕 「或見此處沙羅林地悉是土沙草木石壁。 tr. “Some see that the śāla grove here consists entirely of earth, sand, grasses, trees, and stone walls. Some see this place purified and adorned with gold, silver, and the seven treasures”〔T85 1337a11〕The received text lacks one eon minus a portion; “same/pervading,” the digest, and the final wording differ.
4Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma (T262)「迦留陀夷於法華中面得授記」 tr. “Kālodāyin received a prediction directly within the Lotus”〔T33 0809c18〕「迦留陀夷、優陀夷、阿㝹樓馱、離婆多、劫賓那、薄拘羅、周陀、莎伽陀等,皆當得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提」 tr. “Kālodāyin, Udāyin, Aniruddha, Revata, Kapphiṇa, Bakula, Cunda, Svāgata, and the others will all attain unsurpassed complete awakening”〔T09 0028c03〕The prediction of the five hundred disciples can be securely identified.
5Ten Recitations Vinaya (T1435)「後入聚落被害,作結戒緣起。」 tr. “Later he entered a settlement and was killed, becoming the originating condition for establishing a precept”〔T33 0809c19〕「闇時迦留陀夷起到糞聚所,賊主以利刀斷頭埋著糞中。」 tr. “In the darkness Kālodāyin rose and went to a heap of excrement; the leader of the bandits cut off his head with a sharp knife and buried him in the excrement”〔T23 0123a22〕 「若比丘非時入聚落,波逸提。」 tr. “If a bhikṣu enters a settlement at an improper time, it is a pātayantika offense”〔T23 0123b12〕The person, killing, burial in excrement, untimely entry into a settlement, and establishment of the precept form one corresponding chain. The Shiqian separately says the text is in the Nirvāṇa; that specific referent remains under investigation.
6Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma (T262)「又如身子,法華請主」 tr. “Again, Śāriputra was the principal petitioner in the Lotus”〔T33 0809c19〕「爾時舍利弗知四眾心疑,自亦未了,而白佛言」 tr. “At that time Śāriputra knew that the fourfold assembly had doubts; because he himself had not yet understood, he addressed the Buddha”〔T09 0006b07〕 「唯願世尊敷演斯事。」 tr. “I only pray that the World-Honored One expound this matter”〔T09 0006b10〕The scene of requesting the Dharma is secure.
tr. “Junti carried the three robes to the Buddha and asked〔and so forth〕”〔T33 0809c20〕「舍利及衣鉢,而付均頭沙彌」 tr. “He entrusted the relics, robes, and bowl to the novice Juntou”〔T02 0640c23〕 「是時,均頭沙彌捉衣、持鉢及舍利,往至阿難所」 tr. “At that time the novice Juntou took the robes and carried the bowl and relics, going to Ānanda”〔T02 0640c26〕The root treatise has Junti, three robes, and going to the Buddha; the received text has Juntou, relics, robes, and bowl, and first going to Ānanda.
8Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom (T1509)「從初鹿苑至涅槃夜,所說戒定慧,結為修妬路等藏。」 tr. “From the initial teaching at the Deer Park through the night of nirvāṇa, the discipline, concentration, and wisdom taught were collected into the treasuries of sūtra and the others”〔T33 0809c21〕「佛初得道夜,至般涅槃夜,是二夜中間所說經教,一切皆實不顛倒。」 tr. “From the night when the Buddha first attained the path through the night of parinirvāṇa, all the scriptural teachings given between those two nights were real and not inverted”〔T25 0059c06〕 「應當結集修妬路、阿毘曇、毘尼,作三法藏。」 tr. “Sūtra, Abhidharma, and Vinaya should be collected to form the three Dharma treasuries”〔T25 0067b24〕The two nights and formation of the collections occur in separate passages. The root treatise’s continuous wording has not been found, and its precise referent remains under investigation.
“Previously at Rājagṛha he gave predictions to the śrāvakas; now again in Jeta Grove in Śrāvastī he again gives predictions to the śrāvakas; formerly at Vārāṇasī he gave predictions to the śrāvakas”〔T33 0809c25〕「昔於王舍大城授諸聲聞記,今復於舍衛國祇陀林中復授聲聞記,昔於波羅𭡠授諸聲聞大弟子記。」 tr. “Formerly in the great city of Rājagṛha he gave predictions to the śrāvakas; now again in Jeta Grove in Śrāvastī he again gives predictions to the śrāvakas; formerly at Vārāṇasī he gave predictions to the great śrāvaka disciples”〔T21 0649c02〕The sequence of three predictions in three places agrees; “great,” “great śrāvaka disciples,” and the graph form of the place-name differ.
10Great Vaipulya Dhāraṇī Sūtra (T1339)「世尊不虛,所言真實,故能第二、第三,授我等記。」 tr. “The World-Honored One is not false; what he says is true, and therefore he can give us predictions a second and a third time”〔T33 0809c27〕「世尊不虛所言真實,故能第二第三授我等聲聞大弟子記。」 tr. “The World-Honored One is not false and what he says is true; therefore he can give us great śrāvaka disciples predictions a second and a third time”〔T21 0649c09〕The same words of Śāriputra; punctuation and the final phrase differ.
11Prajñā scripture-and-treatise transmission「從得道夜至泥洹夜,常說般若。」 tr. “From the night of attaining the path through the night of nirvāṇa, he constantly taught prajñā”〔T33 0810a01〕The Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom has 「佛初得道夜,至般涅槃夜」 tr. “from the night when the Buddha first attained the path through the night of parinirvāṇa”〔T25 0059c06〕 and elsewhere 「佛從初以來常說六波羅蜜名」 tr. “From the beginning the Buddha constantly taught the names of the six pāramitās”〔T25 0472a28〕.The two components occur separately. The Shiqian calls the first item only a citation from a scripture and does not supply its title; the referent remains under investigation.
12Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom (T1509) and Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra (T223)「須菩提問畢定不畢定」 tr. “Subhūti asks whether they are certain or not certain”〔T33 0810a02〕「是菩薩摩訶薩為畢定? “Are these bodhisattva-mahāsattvas certain, or are they not certain?”〔T25 0712c20〕 「菩薩摩訶薩畢定,非不畢定。」 tr. “Bodhisattva-mahāsattvas are certain, not uncertain”〔T08 0409b15〕The question-and-answer scene is secure; the treatise and the scripture it explains retain their separate title layers.
13Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom (T1509)「從初發心,常觀涅槃行道。」 tr. “From the initial arousal of mind, one constantly contemplates nirvāṇa and practices the path”〔T33 0810a05〕「從初發意乃至道樹下,於其中間所有智慧,是名般若波羅蜜。」 tr. “From the initial arousal of intent through arrival beneath the tree of awakening, all the wisdom in between is called the perfection of wisdom”〔T25 0139c08〕 「菩薩觀涅槃,行佛道」 tr. “A bodhisattva contemplates nirvāṇa and practices the Buddha-path”〔T25 0139c11〕The two components occur in the same passage. The received text lacks “constantly,” making the root wording a candidate digest or variant.
14Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra (T374)「我坐道場菩提樹下,初成正覺,爾時無量阿僧祇恒沙世界諸菩薩」 tr. “I sat at the place of awakening beneath the bodhi tree and first attained right awakening; at that time there were bodhisattvas from worlds measureless as asaṃkhyeyas and Ganges sands”〔T33 0810a06〕「我坐道場菩提樹下初成正覺,爾時無量阿僧祇恒河沙等諸佛世界有諸菩薩」 tr. “I sat at the place of awakening beneath the bodhi tree and first attained right awakening; at that time there were bodhisattvas from buddha-worlds measureless as asaṃkhyeyas and the sands of the Ganges”〔T12 0380b05〕The sequence of asking the profound meaning, merit, and benefit agrees; “worlds as Ganges sands” and “buddha-worlds as the sands of the Ganges” differ.
15Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma (T262)「我昔從佛聞如是法,見諸菩薩受記作佛。」 tr. “Formerly I heard such Dharma from the Buddha and saw the bodhisattvas receive predictions of buddhahood”〔T33 0810a12〕「我昔從佛聞如是法,見諸菩薩授記作佛」 tr. “Formerly I heard such Dharma from the Buddha and saw predictions of buddhahood given to the bodhisattvas”〔T09 0010c02〕A directly corresponding scene; 受/授, receiving/giving, differs.
16Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra (T374)The first citation is 「雪山有草,牛若食者,即得醍醐。」 tr. “On Snow Mountain there is an herb; if a cow eats it, it immediately obtains clarified essence”〔T33 0810b11〕; the Perfect-Teaching passage later cites 「雪山有草,名曰忍辱,牛若食者,即得醍醐。」 tr. “On Snow Mountain there is an herb named Forbearance; if a cow eats it, it immediately obtains clarified essence”〔T33 0810c09〕「雪山有草名為忍辱,牛若食者則出醍醐。」 tr. “On Snow Mountain there is an herb called Forbearance; if a cow eats it, it then produces clarified essence”〔T12 0525c25〕The Forbearance-herb simile agrees. The first citation omits the herb’s name and the second includes it; “named/called” and “immediately obtains/then produces” form two further pairs of differences.
tr. “From a cow comes milk, and so forth until clarified essence comes from ghee”〔T33 0810b14〕「譬如從牛出乳,從乳出酪,從酪出生穌,從生穌出熟穌,從熟穌出醍醐」 tr. “It is like milk coming from a cow, curds from milk, raw ghee from curds, refined ghee from raw ghee, and clarified essence from refined ghee”〔T12 0449a06〕The root treatise digests the sequence to its beginning and end; 蘇/穌 differ.
tr. “Place poison in milk; throughout the five flavors, all can kill a person”〔T33 0810b18〕「譬如有人置毒乳中,乃至醍醐皆悉有毒」 tr. “It is like someone placing poison in milk; down through clarified essence, all of it contains poison”〔T12 0539b18〕 「毒性不失,遍五味中,皆悉如是」 tr. “The poison’s nature is not lost; throughout the five flavors, all is so”〔T12 0539b20〕The chain of meaning agrees. The received text divides it between sentences, while the conclusion concerning killing appears later.
19Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra (T223) and Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom (T1509)「般若中見性,是歷四味,如三百比丘。」 tr. “Seeing the nature within prajñā is traversing four flavors, as with the three hundred bhikṣus”〔T33 0810b17〕「說是般若波羅蜜品時,三百比丘從座起,以所著衣上佛,發阿耨多羅三藐三菩提心」 tr. “When this chapter on the perfection of wisdom was taught, three hundred bhikṣus rose from their seats, offered the Buddha the robes they were wearing, and aroused the mind of unsurpassed complete awakening”〔T08 0229b15〕The three hundred bhikṣus, rising, offering their robes, arousing the mind, and receiving predictions are secure. Seeing the nature and traversing four flavors are the root treatise’s judgment.
tr. “Ordinary beings are like milk, śrāvakas like curds, bodhisattvas like raw and refined ghee, and buddhas like clarified essence”〔T33 0810b20〕「聲聞如乳,緣覺如酪,菩薩之人如生熟酥,諸佛世尊猶如醍醐。」 tr. “Śrāvakas are like milk, pratyekabuddhas like curds, bodhisattvas like raw and refined ghee, and the buddhas, World-Honored Ones, like clarified essence”〔T12 0423b02〕The sequences do not fully agree; the direct received referent for the root treatise’s citation remains under investigation.
tr. “An ordinary being is like milk, a stream-enterer like curds, a once-returner like raw ghee, a non-returner like refined ghee, and an arhat, pratyekabuddha, and buddha like clarified essence”〔T33 0810b24〕The Mohe Zhiguan (T1911) has 「凡夫如乳;須陀洹如酪;斯陀含如生酥;阿那含如熟酥;阿羅漢、辟支佛、佛如醍醐。」 tr. “An ordinary being is like milk; a stream-enterer like curds; a once-returner like raw ghee; a non-returner like refined ghee; and an arhat, pratyekabuddha, and buddha like clarified essence”〔T46 0033c23〕The parallel within the same tradition is secure; the direct received referent in the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra remains under investigation.
tr. “The buddha-nature of ordinary beings is like milk mixed with blood: blood is all afflictions such as ignorance and formations, while milk is the five wholesome aggregates”〔T33 0810b28〕「眾生佛性,如雜血乳;血者即是無明行等一切煩惱,乳者即是善五陰也。」 tr. “The buddha-nature of sentient beings is like milk mixed with blood: blood is all afflictions such as ignorance and formations, while milk is the five wholesome aggregates”〔T12 0571c03〕The scene agrees. “Ordinary beings/sentient beings” and punctuation differ; the later sequence has the tenth ground in the root treatise and the ten abodes in the received text.
tr. “Sentient beings are like a newly calved cow whose blood and milk have not yet separated”〔T33 0810c06〕「如牛新生,乳血未別,凡夫之性,雜諸煩惱亦復如是。」 tr. “It is like a newly calved cow whose milk and blood have not yet separated; the nature of ordinary beings, mixed with the various afflictions, is likewise so”〔T12 0423b05〕The root treatise combines two portions and reverses the order to blood and milk; its flavor-correlations for śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas also differ from the received text.
24Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra (T374)「從佛出十二部即是出乳,新醫用乳也」 tr. “The twelve divisions emerging from the Buddha is precisely milk emerging; the new physician uses milk”〔T33 0810c12〕「從佛出生十二部經,從十二部經出修多羅」 tr. “From the Buddha are born the twelve divisions of scripture, and from the twelve divisions emerges sūtra”〔T12 0449a09〕The twelve divisions emerging from the Buddha directly agrees; “milk emerging” and “the new physician” are judgments of the treatise master.

The results fall into three categories. First are identical or nearly identical passages with substantive graph differences, such as receiving and giving predictions or immediately obtaining and then producing. Second are the same events in digested form in the root treatise, such as the long citation from the Sutra on Resolving Doubts concerning the Semblance Dharma, predictions in three places, and the three hundred bhikṣus. Third are items for which the received text has only separated components or a parallel within the tradition, so the root treatise’s precise referent cannot yet be sealed, including formation of the Tripiṭaka, prajñā taught between the two nights, the general judgment, and the five flavors within the Tripiṭaka Teaching. All three categories serve only to clarify transmission and do not supplement the root text.

4. Essential Explanations from the Shiqian [the Mirror]

The Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian (T1717) bears the attribution 「天台沙門湛然述」 tr. “set forth by the Tiantai śramaṇa Zhanran”〔T33 0955c14〕 in Fascicle Twenty. Its direct explanation of this unit runs from 0960a29 through 0961b23. Its essential work is not to establish another classification of the teaching, but to identify layer by layer the point at issue in each question and answer of the root treatise.

First, shared and specific. The Shiqian judges that the first four flavors extend later, while the last two extend earlier. It identifies the two scriptures in the root treatise as Prajñā and the Lotus, and explains the Lotus extending through the Avataṃsaka because the Buddha’s wisdom is no different from its initial meaning. It concludes the sunlight simile with 「則初後俱照高山,高山不異、照體無別,是故初後俱是華嚴。」 tr. “Thus at both beginning and end the high mountains are illuminated. The high mountains do not differ, and the substance of the illumination is not separate; therefore both beginning and end are the Avataṃsaka”〔T33 0960b12〕. Initial illumination and afterglow therefore return to the same high mountains without turning two periods into two different Avataṃsakas.

Second, sūtra extending later. The Shiqian divides the root passage into four: brief establishment, establishment through two events, establishment through compilation, and general conclusion〔T33 0960b13–16〕. It supplements the Kālodāyin episode with untimely entry into a settlement, being killed and buried in excrement, and establishment of the precept, while saying the text is in the Nirvāṇa〔0960b17–20〕; the complete corresponding chain in a received text is instead found in the Ten Recitations Vinaya. In the Śāriputra episode it adds Śakra’s offering and the novice’s presentation of the three robes, then concludes, 「雖云五分不滅,終是小乘中意,故三藏至後。」 tr. “Although it is said that the five components do not cease, this ultimately remains the intent within the Lesser Vehicle; therefore the Tripiṭaka extends later”〔T33 0960b29〕. Neither the later commentary’s narrative nor its judgment is passed off as an original sentence of the root treatise.

Third, Vaipulya, Prajñā, Nirvāṇa, and the Lotus. The Shiqian treats the prediction at Rājagṛha as the same as the Lotus and the prediction at Śrāvastī as after the Lotus, thereby explaining why the root treatise judges Vaipulya to extend later〔T33 0960c13–15〕. It then analyzes the Prajñā passage as first citing a scripture and next citing an event, without supplying a title for the first proof〔0960c24–25〕. The Nirvāṇa passage is divided into reasoning and scriptural evidence, while the Lotus passage is divided into manifest, secret, and conclusion. The “shared prediction” is explained through the Buddha’s intent having been unobstructed in former predictions while Lesser Vehicle dispositions remained separated〔0960c28–29〕. The obstruction is placed in the disposition that receives, not in the Buddha’s intent.

Fourth, the three kinds of four. The Shiqian unfolds the Distinct Teaching’s four as the four levels of the ten abodes, ten practices, ten dedications, and entry into the grounds〔T33 0961a02–04〕. It then separately establishes its own question and answer about training in eight during the abodes and sixteen during the practices〔0961a05–08〕. The first passage develops the root treatise’s answer; the second is a further question and answer added by the commentator. Their sequence and authorship layers remain distinct.

Fifth, benefit and nonbenefit. The Shiqian uses the Avataṃsaka as milk only in the two senses that capacities are initially immature and unable to enter the great and that it is the first of the five flavors〔T33 0961a13–17〕. The good-physician simile reiterates 「不以味濃為乳、味淡為酪,故知自約次第相生為譬」 tr. “Milk is not established by the flavor being rich, nor curds by the flavor being light; therefore we know that the simile concerns only their successive arising”〔T33 0961a19〕. It explains twelve and nine through complete use coming first and contracted use occupying the next position〔0961a20〕. This preserves both the boundary of the partial simile and the boundary of sequence through successive arising.

Sixth, the number of flavors received and traversing the teachings. The Shiqian classifies one flavor, five flavors, and two, three, or four flavors as sudden, gradual, and indeterminate〔T33 0961a24–0961b03〕. Two, three, or four is counted by seeing the nature upon reaching the corresponding flavor. Traversing the teachings first gives a general judgment and then finds the five flavors within each teaching〔0961b04–07〕, adding 「一一教中皆有頓漸不定等三,是則非但五味名通,三教亦何滯礙。」 tr. “Within each teaching there are the three—sudden, gradual, indeterminate, and the rest. Thus not only are the names of the five flavors shared; how could the three teachings encounter obstruction?”〔T33 0961b07〕. In answering the difficulty concerning leaping over fruits, it says, 「教道無超、證道亦有,是故四教皆有漸頓不定等四。」 tr. “Within the path of teaching there is no leaping over, while within the path of realization there is; therefore all four teachings possess gradual, sudden, indeterminate, and so forth—‘four’”〔T33 0961b12〕. The final graph “four” in the received sentence remains recorded as written.

Seventh, the final Perfect-Teaching passage. The Shiqian takes the Forbearance herb immediately becoming clarified essence as sudden, distinction within nondifference as gradual, and the twelve divisions emerging from the Buddha as the development of the indeterminate〔T33 0961b13–19〕. The root treatise says only that the five flavors may be judged according to identity in name through ultimate identity. The Shiqian then adds the explicit correlation 「初信如乳,二信至七信如酪,八九十信如生熟蘇,始從初住終至妙覺,並如醍醐」 tr. “The first faith is like milk; the second through seventh faiths are like curds; the eighth, ninth, and tenth faiths are like raw and refined ghee; from the first abode through wondrous awakening, all are like clarified essence”〔T33 0961b21〕. The named stages of faith are the commentator’s stage-judgment and remain separate from the root treatise’s brief wording.

5. Explanations of Various Masters

The Qing-dynasty master Zhiquan’s Fahua Jing Xuanqian Zhengshi (X0592) provides direct, passage-by-passage testimony for this unit. It says, 「增一第九在第十八卷。」 tr. “The ninth in the Ekottarika is in Fascicle Eighteen”〔X 0632b11〕, allowing the Shiqian’s “ninth” and the received Fascicle Eighteen to be understood as different systems of counting. It also records, 「今大藏中方等陀羅尼經有四卷,此引在第二卷。」 tr. “In the present canon the Vaipulya Dhāraṇī Sūtra has four fascicles; this citation is in the second fascicle”〔X 0632b12〕, preserving its contemporary fascicle note. Zhiquan explains the two conditions as the latter two faculties among four faculties in two flavors〔X 0632b14〕 and judges the three hundred bhikṣus as receiving predictions within Prajñā〔X 0632b23〕. These are later explanations and are not rewritten as Master Zhiyi’s own interpretation.

Congyi’s Song-dynasty Mohe Zhiguan Yili Zuanyao (X0921) directly identifies the resolution of questions in Fascicle Ten of the Fahua Xuanyi and transcribes word for word the question and answer on the three kinds of four: 「又妙玄第十料簡云:問:涅槃追說四,方等正開四,別教復有四,若為分別? tr. “Again, the resolution of questions in Fascicle Ten of the Fahua Xuanyi says: Question: The Nirvāṇa retraces and teaches four, Vaipulya directly opens four, and the Distinct Teaching again has four. How are they distinguished? Answer: Nirvāṇa takes up the four and universally enters buddha-nature; the Distinct Teaching sees buddha-nature later in sequence; Vaipulya preserves the realization, and the two do not see the nature”〔X 0096c04〕. It then separately transcribes the Shiqian’s unfolding of the Distinct Teaching’s four and its further question and answer. This witness clearly preserves the two layers of the root treatise’s question and answer and the commentator’s development.

Zhili’s Song-dynasty Guanyin Yishu Ji (T1729) says, 「應知約教明五味者,不取濃淡,但語相生,以其頓乳即醍醐故。」 tr. “One should know that when the five flavors are clarified according to the teaching, thickness and thinness are not taken; only successive arising is discussed, because the sudden milk is itself clarified essence”〔T34 0952c11〕. It then says, 「若約機者有濃淡義」 tr. “If considered according to capacities, there is a meaning of thickness and thinness”〔T34 0952c13〕. This later development directly follows the hard boundary in the present unit by separating teaching from capacities. The root treatise itself establishes only sequence through successive arising and explicitly rejects thickness, thinness, shallowness, and depth.

Zhiyuan’s Song-dynasty Niepan Xuanyi Fayuan Jiyao (T1766) links sudden, gradual, and indeterminate capacities through the three similes of the Forbearance herb, successive arising, and poison, concluding, 「此證不定根性味味得入也。」 tr. “This establishes that indeterminate capacities and natures gain entry in every flavor”〔T38 0017a28〕. His Weimo Jing Lueshu Chuiyu Ji (T1779) also says, 「彼經三百比丘聞般若已,皆以僧伽梨而用供養。」 tr. “After the three hundred bhikṣus in that scripture heard prajñā, they all used their saṃghāṭī robes as offerings”〔T38 0769b11〕 and recounts the later Tiantai reading of prajñā between the two nights〔0797c12–16〕. Both works attest the doctrinal carrying forward, but neither can replace a received source whose identity remains to be sealed.

The various masters jointly preserve three minimum boundaries. In classifying the teaching, the dairy simile concerns successive arising and does not use physical richness or thinness directly as a hierarchy. The scriptural and treatise scene of the three hundred bhikṣus concerns offering robes, arousing the mind, and receiving predictions, while the root treatise separately judges it as seeing the nature and traversing four flavors. The root treatise’s question and answer on the three kinds of four and the Shiqian’s question about training in eight in the abodes and sixteen in the practices each retains its own authorship layer.

6. Terminology

Resolving questions. The root treatise explicitly lists three meanings: shared and specific, benefit and nonbenefit, and traversing the various teachings〔T33 0809c01–02〕. It does not ask merely one question about sameness and difference. Through questions and answers and multiple sets of similes, it tests how far the preceding classification extends, who benefits from it, and how it is differentiated again within each teaching.

Shared and specific. The specific concerns the fixed limits of one segment of teaching, while the shared asks whether the same type of meaning can extend through beginning and end〔T33 0809c02–03〕. The shared does not add another period, and the specific does not claim that no same meaning can occur in any other period.

Half and full and the five flavors. This passage uses milk, curds, raw ghee, refined ghee, and clarified essence for sequence and half and full for what is expressed. Both measures recur in the general judgment, shared and specific, practical benefit, and traversal of the teachings. They cannot be frozen into a timeline that permits only one direction of reading.

Practical benefit. Whether a medicine corresponds to the illness and whether a faculty is matured are questions of practical benefit. The value, depth, or shallowness of the medicine itself belongs to another layer. By setting valuable medicine inappropriate for an illness against inexpensive medicine appropriate for it, the root treatise breaks the reverse inference that what benefits must be valuable and what does not benefit must be inferior〔T33 0810a18–24〕.

Partial simile. A simile takes only the required part of similarity. That the Avataṃsaka is milk for lesser faculties but clarified essence for great faculties shows that the same teaching receives different flavor-names according to capacity. Establishing one part of resemblance does not turn all the physical properties of milk into doctrine.

Expansion and contraction. The good physician’s twelve medicines form the perfect prescription, used in full or contracted to nine according to the illness. Following the list elsewhere in this work that retains nine while omitting three, the three items “unasked, broad, prediction” can be unfolded as teaching without being asked, vaipulya, and prediction〔T33 0753c21–25〕. The present unit visibly preserves its original punctuation.

Sequence through successive arising. This passage takes the before-and-after relation of milk producing curds and curds producing ghee to explain the sequence of taking medicine and receiving benefit. It does not use the thickness of dairy products to establish the depth of teachings. Complete and contracted use adapt a prescription to a capacity; they do not make the Buddha’s teaching thinner in substance.

The practitioner’s mind immature and mature. The five flavors concern whether the practitioner’s views and thoughts have turned, whether the practitioner has been rebuked, whether the practitioner has received Dharma, and whether ignorance has been broken and the Buddha’s knowing-and-seeing opened. The root treatise expressly says that when the practitioner’s mind is immature, the teaching has not changed, and when the practitioner’s mind matures, the teaching is named according to that maturation〔T33 0810b08–09〕. The subjects of the two clauses remain distinct.

One flavor, five flavors, and two, three, or four flavors. One person can immediately obtain clarified essence upon first hearing, can traverse all five flavors in sequence, or can see the nature upon reaching the second, third, or fourth flavor. Two, three, and four are each counted by the flavor in which the nature is seen.

Indeterminate leaping over fruits. The Tripiṭaka, Shared, and Distinct passages all retain leaping over fruits or entry flavor by flavor. The Shiqian explains sudden leaping through the development of past habituation and the indeterminate through differences in what develops〔T33 0961b10〕. The sequence of the path of teaching must therefore remain separate from actual entry in realization.

Distinction within nondifference. Because the Perfect Teaching is upright and solely one, it is first called only one flavor; yet the five flavors may still arise in sequence from identity in name through ultimate identity. Distinctions are established according to the practitioner’s development, entry, and sequence. They do not divide the principle realized into five pieces.

7. Similes · Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward

The similes in this unit are not one static picture of dairy products, but four movements. The rising sun and the afterglow of sunset both illuminate high mountains, showing that one meaning can extend through beginning and end. Valuable and inexpensive medicines correspond differently to an illness, showing that value and practical benefit cannot be reversed into one another. Expanding or contracting twelve medicines makes both complete and contracted use depend upon curing the illness. Milk’s successive transformation into clarified essence and poison placed in milk pervading all the flavors show that capacities can mature sequentially or gain entry rapidly at different points.

The sunlight simile preserves individually the sun, high mountains, lofty ridges, and the two times of rising and setting. The sun first illuminating high mountains corresponds to its afterglow upon lofty ridges. Because beginning and end both illuminate high mountains, the mountains do not differ, and the substance of illumination is not separate, the simile can carry the argument that the Avataṃsaka extends through beginning and end.

The good-physician simile first has one secret prescription, twelve medicines, and three especially valuable medicines, and then accurate diagnosis and appropriate expansion or contraction. In the corresponding teaching, the Buddha possesses the twelve divisions, bodhisattvas take the whole, and the Two Vehicles use nine as their dose. Number and agent correspond one by one. The emphasis falls on the physician adding or removing medicines according to illness without missing its signs.

The three similes of the Forbearance herb on Snow Mountain, milk emerging from a cow through clarified essence, and poison pervading all five flavors respectively reveal rapid attainment through one flavor, sequential traversal of the flavors, and entry possible in every flavor. Placed side by side, they answer directly whether one person receives one flavor or five. The root treatise’s answer is not an either-or choice: according to dispositions there are one, five, two, three, and four flavors.

Read with the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, the dairy materials in the received text are dispersed across several passages, while the root treatise reorganizes them according to its own threefold resolution of questions. Read with the Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma, Kālodāyin’s prediction, Śāriputra’s request for teaching, and former hearing of predictions for bodhisattvas respectively serve the Tripiṭaka extending later and the Lotus extending earlier. Read with the Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom, the two nights, compilation, Prajñā question, and three hundred bhikṣus each belong to different scenes. The value of cross-reading lies in distinguishing layers, not in splicing them into a new quotation.

Later carrying forward develops principally along three lines. The Shiqian divides the root treatise’s concise wording into sections, faculties, and stages. Zhili, Zhiyuan, and others reorganize the meaning through successive arising, sudden, gradual, and indeterminate, and the three similes. Zhiquan and Congyi preserve fascicle information, persons, and direct transcriptions. All three lines make this characteristic intelligible, and all three require the root treatise, commentator, and later explanations each to preserve their own attributed layer.

8. Placement of the Editions

First, this unit takes the Fahua Xuanyi (T1716) as its base text. Its opening boundary is 0809c01, while its ending boundary lies before the next paragraph on the same line, 0810c14. The boundary follows the actual paragraph structure and is not calculated by subtracting one line number.

Second, the sole main-text variant in this passage occurs at 0810b03. The electronic critical text reads (“when teaching”), while the original Taishō reading is (“departing”). It occurs at the opening of the third explanation, according to the practitioner’s mind. Both readings are recorded; the four-layer edition follows this work’s base text and uses , without altering it from graphic resemblance alone.

Third, the extant text contains four inline annotations. They follow Junti carrying the three robes to the Buddha and asking〔T33 0809c20–21〕, the Vaipulya statement that two do not see the nature〔0810a16〕, indeterminate leaping over fruits in the Shared Teaching〔0810c05〕, and indeterminate leaping over fruits in the Distinct Teaching〔0810c09〕. These annotations are transmitted text and are not deleted as ellipses.

Fourth, the Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian’s direct explanation begins at 0960a29 and ends with its final graph across 0961b23–24; the next passage separately begins explaining the teaching through increasing numbers on the same line, 0961b24. Its author attribution, analysis, supplementary narrative, source identifications, and self-established questions and answers are all recorded separately within the T1717 layer.

Fifth, the root treatise’s citations from the Sūtra of Immeasurable Meanings, Sutra on Resolving Doubts concerning the Semblance Dharma, Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma, Great Vaipulya Dhāraṇī Sūtra, Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, Great Treatise on the Perfection of Wisdom, and other works frequently take the form of digests and variants. When the same scene can be identified in a received text, its differences are recorded side by side. When a continuous corresponding passage has not been found, the referent remains explicitly under investigation, and similar components are not combined into a new sentence.

Sixth, each page-and-line anchor attached to evidence follows the nearest same-edition line marker preceding the quotation’s first graph. When two quotations occur on the same line, each carries separately the anchor of its own first graph; neither inherits the line number of an outer introduction or of the preceding quotation.

Seventh, later summary names for the framework may aid guidance through the whole work, but they are not original terms in this unit. Its demonstrable skeleton remains the three meanings shared and specific, benefit and nonbenefit, and traversing the various teachings, together with the actual similes of sunlight, medicines, the five flavors, and poison.
