Can the Buddha’s teaching be arranged as a curriculum by year? If, after twelve years, there are still people who need to hear the Four Truths, dependent arising, and the six perfections, does the Buddha teach them or not? If He teaches, the Dharma crosses the assigned deadline; if He does not, He abandons the people before Him who are ready to receive instruction. With this single question, Guanding removes the foundation from classifications fixed to chronological periods.
What the Buddha teaches depends not only on what comes earlier or later on a clock, but on who stands before Him, what they are able to hear, and what they need at that moment. From the Buddha’s side, Great and Lesser Vehicle teachings can be presented together. From the side of sentient beings, some receive the teaching suddenly and some enter gradually. Sudden and gradual describe real differences in faculties, but fixed years cannot divide the Buddha’s entire teaching into sealed compartments.
The same treatise can therefore discuss Prajñā and the Lotus from several perspectives. In relation to real and skillful wisdom, Prajñā is profound and great; in relation to the buddhahood of those of the Two Vehicles, one point remains unexplained. Disclosure of the provisional teachings yields one distinction, while ease and difficulty of understanding yield another. Reconciliation does not rush to declare a winner; it first asks what question each statement answers.
The two, three, four, and eight repositories work in the same way. Different numbers mark different ways of gathering the teachings. Reconciliation allows them to be viewed together without grinding all their names into one. Nor does the basis of the Four Teachings lie merely in the repeated number four. One must ask how conditioned activities, censure, afflictions, and purity disclose corresponding Dharma-meanings, and how suffering, accumulation, path, and cessation are each present within every teaching.
When the question turns to the relative rank of scriptures, Guanding returns the criterion to those addressed. Emptiness, permanence, buddha-nature, and the One Vehicle in the Larger Prajñā, the Lotus, and the Nirvāṇa illuminate one another. The assemblies attended by Ānanda, Kāśyapa, and Śāriputra cannot by themselves determine the depth of the scriptures. Responsive participants appear as great within a great teaching and as lesser within a lesser teaching; the identity they manifest serves the work of transformation.
The many teachings are finally gathered in brief as the Śrāvaka Repository and the Bodhisattva Repository. Each addresses two kinds of person: some remain in the lesser teaching while others proceed from the lesser to the Great; some enter the Great Vehicle straightaway while others enter it gradually. People of different identities may be present at an assembly, but the teaching is still named according to its principal audience and its principal Dharma. Opening the two repositories into the Four Teachings unfolds a concise collection into finer distinctions; it does not invent a second and conflicting Buddha-Dharma.
This whole passage is Guanding’s private record, and only at “the Master said” does he begin recording Zhiyi. Guanding uses fishing and hunting in rivers and marshes to explain why he cannot avoid speaking at length. Zhiyi concludes with the Five Chapters linked like embroidery and with breaking through dry earth to see wet clay. The heart of classifying the teaching does not lie in producing the most elegant timetable. It lies in refusing to let the timetable conceal sentient beings: only by seeing for whom a teaching is given can one see how, beneath the different names of the scriptures, the same Buddha-Dharma reaches each person according to what is appropriate.

How Can Three Statements about Prajñā and the Lotus Be Reconciled?
What follows is a private compilation by the recorder Guanding of divergent explanations he had heard.
Someone cites the “Convergence of Schools” chapter of the Da Zhidu Lun. The treatise enumerates ten great scriptures, including the Cloud Sūtra, the Great Cloud Sūtra, and the Lotus Sūtra, and says that Prajñā is the greatest. Its “Great Illumination” chapter also says that all other wholesome Dharmas are included within Prajñā, meaning that the Lotus Sūtra too is a wholesome Dharma. Fascicle One Hundred says that the Lotus is a secret teaching while Prajñā is not secret, because Prajñā does not expressly state that those of the Two Vehicles will become buddhas. The treatise also says that Prajñā and the Lotus are merely different names. These three statements appear inconsistent with one another. How should they be understood together?
One person explains them as follows. All sages enter the absence of marks with an undiscriminating mind, like many streams flowing into the sea. When they guide sentient beings, they take the absence of marks as the foundation, like empty space embracing everything. Prajñā sets forth these two aspects with exceptional fullness and is therefore greatest among the ten great scriptures. Prajñā also clarifies the siddhānta of ultimate truth and is therefore greatest. The entire scripture has ninety chapters: the first sixty explain real wisdom, while the chapters from “Inexhaustible” onward explain skillful wisdom. These two kinds of wisdom are the parents of the Dharma-bodies of the buddhas of past, present, and future, and are therefore the greatest good. The two kinds of wisdom taught in the other scriptures are all included within Prajñā.
Someone asks: If other scriptures also clarify these two kinds of wisdom, then Prajñā should likewise be included within the other scriptures.
The answer is that the Larger Prajñā specializes in clarifying both from its very beginning, whereas other scriptures do not. Since ancient times Prajñā has been called the scripture through which people attain the Way, and this shows its greatness.
Guanding comments that this merely repeats the treatise’s special exaltation of Prajñā. How does that amount to reconciliation? True reconciliation distinguishes common Prajñā from uncommon Prajñā. Uncommon Prajñā is greatest; whenever another scripture also clarifies uncommon Prajñā, its meaning is entirely equal. The rest may be understood accordingly, and so forth.
Another person offers this reconciliation. The Lotus teaches that those of the Two Vehicles can attain buddhahood and is therefore secret. Prajñā does not teach their buddhahood and is therefore not secret. The secret teaching is profound, while Prajñā is shallow. Why? Prajñā teaches that the bodhisattva is the cause of buddhahood. This is easy to understand and therefore is not called secret. The buddhahood of those of the Two Vehicles contradicts what earlier teachings told them and is difficult to understand; it is therefore called secret. The treatise says that using ordinary medicine as medicine is easy, while using poison as medicine is difficult, and so forth.
Yet secrecy and manifestation both extend through the Great and Lesser Vehicles. Fascicle Four of the Da Zhidu Lun says that the manifest teaching presents arhats as having severed afflictions and become pure, while bodhisattvas have not severed afflictions and are not yet pure, so the bodhisattvas are placed later in the assembly. According to the secret teaching, bodhisattvas have attained the six superknowledges, severed every affliction, and surpassed those of the Two Vehicles. One should therefore know that the manifest is shallower and the secret more profound. Both Prajñā and the Lotus now teach that bodhisattvas attain the forbearance of non-arising and possess the six superknowledges. Both are therefore secret, both profound, and both great. If one further distinguishes secret from non-secret within the secret teaching, Prajñā lacks the single item of teaching the buddhahood of those of the Two Vehicles; it is called non-secret only in this respect.
Someone asks: Prajñā has not yet disclosed the provisional teachings as skillful means, so it should be secret. The Lotus discloses those provisional teachings, so it should be manifest.
The answer is that if disclosure of the provisional is the criterion, the question is correct. Here, however, “manifest” is being used only for a meaning that is shallow and readily understood.
Another question follows: If Prajñā still leaves something unexplained, how can it be called great?
The answer is that in terms of real and skillful wisdom, it is profound and great. In not clarifying that those of the Two Vehicles attain buddhahood, it remains incomplete.
The questioner presses further: If it is profound and great, why does it not say that the Two Vehicles are skillful means and enable those people to attain buddhahood? If this meaning remains unexplained, how can Prajñā be great?
The answer says that this is not merely a personal explanation. Master Sengrui too says that Prajñā is like illumination and the Lotus like reality. When it comes to carrying an investigation of principle to its limit and to its nature illuminating the myriad practices, reality does not equal illumination. When it comes to fully revealing true transformation and explaining that originally there are not three vehicles, illumination does not equal reality. Thus, when profound meaning is praised, Prajñā’s achievement is weighty; when reality is extolled, the Lotus’s function is lofty.
Someone objects: Even with an appeal to Master Sengrui, this is like grasping a dead tree for support and failing to realize that the person and the stump will fall together. The explanation is still incomplete. Guanding holds that uncommon Prajñā has never failed to clarify the buddhahood of those of the Two Vehicles. How, then, does it differ from the great and equal wisdom taught in the Lotus?
Two, Three, Four, and Eight Repositories
The scriptures and treatises classify the teachings in more than one way. The mātṛkā has two repositories, the Śrāvaka Repository and the Bodhisattva Repository. Other scriptures speak of three repositories, adding a Miscellaneous Repository to those two. They assign eleven divisions of scripture to the Śrāvaka Repository, the Vaipulya division to the Bodhisattva Repository, and all twelve divisions together to the Miscellaneous Repository. Another classification has four repositories, further opening a Buddha Repository. The Sūtra of the Bodhisattva’s Descent into the Womb teaches eight: the Repository of Embryonic Transformation, the Intermediate-Existence Repository, the Mahāyāna-Vaipulya Repository, the Precepts and Discipline Repository, the Ten Abodes Repository, the Miscellaneous Repository, the Vajra Repository, and the Buddha Repository. How should these different numbers be reconciled?
In reconciling the two repositories, the first corresponds to śrāvakas and the second to the Bodhisattva Repository. In reconciling the three, the first corresponds to the Śrāvaka Repository, the second to the Miscellaneous Repository, and the third to the Bodhisattva Repository. In reconciling the four, each repository corresponds to one teaching. In reconciling the eight, the period covered by the eight repositories begins with the bodhisattva’s descent into the womb, while that covered by the Four Teachings begins with the Buddha’s turning of the Dharma-wheel. Their temporal divisions therefore differ. Here they are correlated only through the eight teachings that operate after the turning of the Dharma-wheel.
Before the repositories of Embryonic Transformation and Intermediate Existence are explained to Ānanda, they are the secret teaching; when they are explained to him, they are the indeterminate teaching. The Mahāyāna-Vaipulya Repository is the sudden teaching. The five repositories beginning with Precepts and Discipline form the sequence within the gradual teaching: the Precepts and Discipline Repository is the Tripiṭaka Teaching; the Ten Abodes Repository is the Vaipulya Teaching; the Miscellaneous Repository is the Shared Teaching; the Vajra Repository is the Distinct Teaching; and the Buddha Repository is the Perfect Teaching. The Buddha’s intent is difficult to fathom, however. This is only a provisional reconciliation made by viewing the systems in relation to one another, and so forth.
The Basis for the Names and Meanings of the Four Teachings
Someone asks: From which scripture do the names and meanings of the Four Teachings come?
The answer says that the “Practice” chapter of the Chang Ahan records the Buddha in Śiśapā Village north of Yuanmi City teaching the four great teaching-principles: first, something heard directly from the Buddha; second, something heard from the harmonious community; third, something heard from many bhikṣus; and fourth, something heard from one bhikṣu. These are called the four great teaching-principles. Fascicle Six of the Moon-Lamp Samādhi Sūtra also explains four kinds of sūtra: conditioned activities, censure, afflictions, and purity.
Guanding privately offers the following correlation. Conditioned activities are dharmas arising from causes and conditions, which is the meaning of the Tripiṭaka Teaching. Censure means directly comprehending fault and wrongdoing, which is the meaning of the Shared Teaching. “Afflictions” means that without entering the great ocean one cannot obtain the jewel; without afflictions there would be no wisdom. This is the meaning of the Distinct Teaching. “Purity” means that once the single term “pure” is raised as its name, self, permanence, bliss, and the other meanings are naturally present. This is the meaning of the Perfect Teaching.
The four kinds of sūtra do not merely correspond separately to the Four Teachings. Each of the Four Teachings also possesses all four.
Within the Tripiṭaka Teaching, conditioned activities are the truth of accumulation; the fruit of conditioned activities is the truth of suffering; counteracting afflictions by means of an antidote belonging to conditioned activities is the truth of the path; and the purification of conditioned activities is the truth of cessation. In this way the Tripiṭaka Teaching possesses the four kinds of sūtra.
Within the Shared Teaching, censuring conditioned activities is the truth of accumulation; censuring all forms of existence is the truth of suffering; censuring the antidote to afflictions is the truth of the path; and censuring purity is the truth of cessation. In this way the Shared Teaching possesses the four kinds of sūtra.
Within the Distinct Teaching, conditioned activities produced by afflictions are the truth of accumulation; forms of existence produced by afflictions are the truth of suffering; the censuring of afflicted activities is the truth of the path; and purification of afflictions is the truth of cessation. In this way the Distinct Teaching possesses the four kinds of sūtra.
Within the Perfect Teaching, nirvāṇa is precisely birth-and-death, the purification of the truth of suffering; awakening is precisely affliction, the purification of the truth of accumulation; affliction is precisely awakening, the purification of the truth of the path; and birth-and-death is precisely nirvāṇa, the purification of the truth of cessation. These are the four kinds of sūtra within the Perfect Teaching.
The Moon-Lamp Samādhi Sūtra further explains four discourses, four Dharmas, four objects, four gateways, four knowledges that sever afflictions, four sufferings, four accumulations, and four paths. All correspond to the Four Teachings; their details should be understood from that scripture.
The seventh-bhūmi section of the Treatise on the Ten Stages says that one moment of mind possesses the ten perfections, the four means of gathering, the thirty-seven factors, and the Four Houses. It explains the Four Houses as the House of Prajñā, the House of Truth, the House of Relinquishing Afflictions, and the House of Purifying Suffering.
Guanding privately explains them as follows. Taking the truth of suffering as the first gateway and practicing the factors of the path so that suffering is purified expresses the Tripiṭaka Teaching. The House of Relinquishing Afflictions means relinquishing them through direct comprehension of the markless substance of dharmas: form, for example, is emptiness, and through emptiness one relinquishes without retaining a separate mark. Practicing the factors of the path in this way expresses the Shared Teaching. In the House of Prajñā, the illumination of wisdom makes every Dharma clear, one comprehends Dharma-gates numerous as the sands of the Ganges, and on that basis practices the factors of the path. This expresses the Distinct Teaching. In the House of Truth, “truth” means the principle of the true mark, which is the Perfect Teaching; one practices the factors of the path in terms of the true mark. The details are as the treatise explains, and so forth.
Sudden and Gradual Cannot Be Fixed to Chronological Periods
Dharmottara’s Meaning of the Traces of the Teaching says that “teaching” means the words by which the Buddha instructs those of lower faculties, while “traces” means tracks and may also be understood as traces of responsive manifestation and traces of transformation. The sages’ establishment of teachings leaves lines of approach, yet different masters have not classified the teachings in a single way.
The first theory holds that the teaching of Śākyamuni’s lifetime does not go beyond sudden and gradual, and that the gradual teaching contains seven stages and five periods. The world transmits this theory in common, and everyone says it is correct.
The second theory asks how the five periods could be fixed. Nevertheless, it holds that the teachings given before the passing between the twin śāla trees still left a remainder and were incomplete, while the proclamation of nirvāṇa was complete.
The third theory holds that the Buddha responds to myriad kinds of beings with one voice, with those of great and lesser faculties receiving it together. How, then, could one impose sudden and gradual upon it? This theory therefore says there are no sudden and gradual teachings.
When tested against the scriptures and treatises, these explanations prove to be strained constructions. Why? People say that the Buddha’s teachings do not go beyond sudden and gradual, but those categories do not actually encompass all teachings. The four Āgamas and the five Vinayas, for example, do not exhaust profound meaning and so cannot be called sudden. Their teaching also extends from the beginning to the end of the Buddha’s lifetime and does not progress in the sequence assigned to the Great Vehicle, so it cannot be called that kind of gradual teaching either. Since there are teachings not contained by sudden and gradual, how can one say that the Buddha’s teaching does not go beyond them?
Nevertheless, there is such a thing as sudden teaching, so it too cannot be rejected wholesale. Sudden and gradual are generally discussed according to the persons addressed by the teaching. From the Tathāgata’s side, He actually presents the Great and Lesser Vehicles together, without temporal priority. The persons addressed understand differently: some receive the teaching suddenly, while others enter gradually, and the teachings are compiled according to what each group heard. How could one say that there is no sudden teaching? What cannot be done is to fix sudden and gradual to chronological periods and use temporal order to compare their depth.
Successively Refuting the So-Called Five Periods
People say that the gradual teaching has seven stages and five periods and that, immediately after attaining the Way, the Buddha first taught the human-and-heaven gateway of the Five Precepts and Ten Wholesome Actions to the two elders Trapuṣa and Bhallika. Yet the Buddha teaches according to what sentient beings should hear: whenever something is appropriate, He teaches it. How could the first period be restricted to teaching the Five Precepts to only two people? The Five Precepts Sūtra also says that the two elders attained the forbearance in which dharmas do not arise, three hundred people attained the forbearance of faith, and two hundred attained the fruit of stream-entry. The Puyao Jing says that the Buddha predicted buddhahood for the two elders under the name Tathāgata Mìchéng. If so, what supports the claim that the first teaching to the two was merely a human-and-heaven gateway? Moreover, the two elders saw the Buddha, heard the Dharma, bowed, and departed; they never went to the Deer Park. When the Five Precepts were first taught, Kauṇḍinya had not yet been transformed. What did that teaching follow in sequence, and how could it be called gradual?
People say that the second period comprised twelve years of separate teaching for the Three Vehicles. If so, after twelve years there would still have been people suited to hearing the Four Truths, dependent arising, and the six perfections. Could the Buddha have refused to teach them? If He continued to teach, then the separate teachings of the Three Vehicles were not confined to twelve years. If He did not, could the Buddha have abandoned this later group of beings ready to hear? That is impossible. A scripture says that the Buddha taught the Four Truths for śrāvakas, and so on through His teaching of the six perfections. This did not stop after twelve years; throughout the Buddha’s lifetime, He taught whenever someone was ready to hear. The four Āgamas and five Vinayas were taught for śrāvakas and continued until the Sage’s passing. The Zengyi Ahan Jing therefore says that Śākyamuni taught the precepts only in brief for twelve years, then established them extensively once blemishes arose. The “Traveling Sūtra” of the Chang Ahan continues through nirvāṇa. How can one say that every Lesser Vehicle teaching was confined to twelve years?
People say that in the third period, lasting thirty years, the Buddha taught the emptiness school of Prajñā, the Vimalakīrti, and the Sūtra of Brahmā’s Questions. What scriptural passage establishes that it lasted thirty years?
Others say that the Buddha taught the One Vehicle of the Lotus only after forty years. In the Lotus Sūtra, Maitreya says that only a little more than forty years have passed since the Buddha attained the Way. Yet this does not establish that the Lotus necessarily followed the Larger Prajñā. Why? The Da Zhidu Lun says that Subhūti had heard in the Lotus that those who merely raised a hand or bowed their head would all become buddhas, and on that basis now asked whether one might fall back. If this account is followed, how could the order of the Larger Prajñā and the Lotus be fixed?
It is difficult to make a hasty judgment about the relative depth of the Larger Prajñā, the Lotus, and the Nirvāṇa. Why? The buddha-nature taught in the Nirvāṇa is also called Prajñā and also called the One Vehicle. The One Vehicle is the purport of the Lotus, and Prajñā is what the Larger Prajñā teaches. This already clarifies nature; what remains incomplete? The Larger Prajñā teaches the emptiness of ultimate truth, which does not differ from the emptiness taught in the Nirvāṇa Sūtra: both teach the emptiness of form and even the emptiness of great nirvāṇa. The Larger Prajñā also says that “nirvāṇa is not a conjured phenomenon,” while the Vimalakīrti says that the Buddha’s body is free from the five forms of impermanence. How do these differ from the Nirvāṇa’s teaching of permanence and of nirvāṇa as not empty? Why create a distinction and claim that the Vimalakīrti predominantly teaches permanence while the Larger Prajñā exclusively teaches emptiness?
Because Ānanda and other śrāvakas attended the Larger Prajñā assembly, then the Lotus assembly, and finally the Nirvāṇa assembly, some conclude that those three teachings must have a fixed order of depth. This does not necessarily follow. Ānanda and Kāśyapa attended the Lotus assembly. If they had not yet heard the teaching of permanence there, and neither was present at the Nirvāṇa assembly, how could they understand permanence and transmit the Nirvāṇa? Further, Śāriputra entered extinction seven days before the Buddha’s nirvāṇa, while Maudgalyāyana, beaten by staff-bearing non-Buddhist practitioners, also entered nirvāṇa before the Buddha. Neither was present at the assembly between the twin śāla trees. Does that mean they could not understand permanence? One should therefore know that they had already awakened to permanence within the Lotus and did not need to hear it again.
Moreover, Śāriputra and the other śrāvakas are responsive participants who assist the Tathāgata’s teaching. The Lotus Sūtra says that, knowing beings delight in lesser Dharmas and fear great wisdom, bodhisattvas therefore appear as śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas. The Nirvāṇa likewise says that the eldest son in the Buddha’s Dharma is Mahākāśyapa, while Ānanda, the learned one, can sever every doubt and naturally understand what is permanent and what is impermanent. Responsive participants manifest as great within a Great Vehicle teaching and as lesser within a lesser teaching. How could their attendance at an assembly be used to fix a sequence of stages?
Further, if one proceeds from the Lotus into the Nirvāṇa, the Lotus Sūtra has already clarified that birth in the royal palace was not the beginning of buddhahood and that He attained the Way in the remote past. Why would the Nirvāṇa only then cite the initial attainment beneath the bodhi tree, take it as literal fact, and raise a doubt? The Nirvāṇa Sūtra is therefore for one group of beings who were finally ready to hear permanence. Those who heard the Lotus did not need to hear the Nirvāṇa in order to understand it.
The Nirvāṇa Sūtra also brings great benefit, like the eight thousand śrāvakas in the Lotus who received predictions and brought a great fruit to maturity. If the predictions in the Lotus are used to demonstrate the benefit of the Nirvāṇa, then the two share the same principle and have no fixed hierarchy of depth.
The Lotus Upadeśa also says that the principle of the Lotus Sūtra is Perfect and its teaching ultimate, lacking nothing. In the Da Zhidu Lun, Nāgārjuna praises the Lotus as the most profound. Why are the other scriptures entrusted to Ānanda, while only the Lotus is entrusted solely to bodhisattvas? One can therefore know that the Lotus is ultimately complete and requires no further doubt.
One should further know that the various Great Vehicle scriptures do not differ in their destination; their names differ only according to what is appropriate for sentient beings. Avataṃsaka, Immeasurable Meanings, and Lotus are names of samādhis. Prajñā means great wisdom. The Vimalakīrti’s “inconceivable liberation” is liberation; great nirvāṇa is ultimate cessation; and the awakening about which Mañjuśrī asks is the fulfilled path. All are Buddha-Dharma. The Dharma itself has no superiority or inferiority: whenever they clarify the fruit, it is the fruit of buddhahood; whenever they clarify the cause, it is practice on the bodhisattva stages; whenever they clarify principle, it is Dharma-nature; and those they address are bodhisattvas. Their destination should not differ, so why do people forcibly manufacture superiority and inferiority? If this is so, when Master Dan says that every teaching before the twin trees, including the Lotus Sūtra, was incomplete, is that not a false accusation? Human judgments have proceeded in this way; what do the scriptures and treatises themselves say?
Establishing the Śrāvaka and Bodhisattva Repositories from the Scriptures and Treatises
The mātṛkā says that of the twelve divisions of scripture, only Vaipulya is the Bodhisattva Repository, while the eleven divisions are the Śrāvaka Repository. The Buddha separately taught the path out of suffering for śrāvakas and bodhisattvas. The compilers of the scriptures gathered what was taught for bodhisattvas as the Bodhisattva Repository and what was taught for śrāvakas as the Śrāvaka Repository. In the Da Zhidu Lun, Nāgārjuna likewise says that Mahākāśyapa and Ānanda compiled the Tripiṭaka on Fragrant Mountain as the Śrāvaka Repository, while Mañjuśrī and Ānanda compiled the Great Vehicle scriptures as the Bodhisattva Repository. The Nirvāṇa also says that the scriptures in eleven divisions are upheld by those of the Two Vehicles and that the Vaipulya division is upheld by bodhisattvas. On examining the scriptures and treatises, then, there are in brief only two: the Śrāvaka Repository and the Bodhisattva Repository.
Yet teaching necessarily corresponds to the persons addressed, and each repository addresses two kinds.
Within the Śrāvaka Repository are determinate śrāvakas and śrāvakas who have lost the aspiration for awakening. Determinate śrāvakas have long cultivated distinct kinds of wholesome roots. Their minds are small and narrow, their Lesser Vehicle nature is fully formed, and they delight exclusively in the lesser teaching. The Buddha teaches the lesser Dharma for them; ultimately they realize its fruit and cannot proceed to the Great Vehicle. Śrāvakas who have lost the aspiration for awakening once aroused bodhicitta in the presence of past buddhas and bodhisattvas. Passing through birth and death, however, they forgot their original resolve, developed a Lesser Vehicle mind, and aspired to the lesser teaching. The Buddha first teaches the lesser Dharma for them and ultimately causes them to proceed to the Great Vehicle. Thus, determinate śrāvakas remain in the lesser teaching, while śrāvakas who have lost bodhicitta can later proceed to the Great Vehicle. One group remains and the other departs, but they are alike when receiving the lesser Dharma. The teaching for both is therefore called the Śrāvaka Repository.
Within the Bodhisattva Repository are those capable of sudden awakening and bodhisattvas who enter gradually. Those capable of sudden awakening are like the beings addressed by the Avataṃsaka and other scriptures: they do not come through the Lesser Vehicle but enter the Great Vehicle straightaway, and are therefore called sudden. Those who enter gradually are precisely the śrāvakas who earlier lost the aspiration for awakening and can later enter the Great Vehicle. Their Great Vehicle practice comes through the lesser teaching and is therefore called gradual. Although one group is sudden and the other gradual, they are alike when receiving the great Dharma. The teaching for both is therefore called the Bodhisattva Repository.
The names of these two repositories are fixed according to the principal persons addressed and the principal Dharma taught. Bodhisattvas may be present within the Śrāvaka Repository as responsive participants, but they are not its principal audience. The presence of bodhisattvas in an assembly does not make the scripture a Great Vehicle scripture. Śrāvakas may likewise be present within the Bodhisattva Repository, but they are not its principal audience and śrāvaka Dharma is not its purport, so it cannot be called a Lesser Vehicle teaching. The Dharma is determined according to the principal persons addressed, and each has its own designation. The scriptures are therefore summarized under only these two repositories.
Someone asks: The Buddha taught three kinds of teaching for people seeking the Three Vehicles. Why, then, are the compiled repositories limited to two?
The answer is that the Buddha indeed taught the Dharmas of the Three Vehicles to people seeking those three vehicles. Those who hear dependent arising, however, are included with the śrāvakas. Pratyekabuddhas appear in ages without a buddha, merely display supernormal powers, and remain silent without teaching. The compilers therefore gathered the spoken scriptures into two repositories. This is the purport of classifying the teachings on the basis of the scriptures.
Opening the Two Repositories into the Four Teachings
How should the Four Teachings now presented be reconciled with Dharmottara’s two repositories? Dharmottara himself says that, when one gathers the essentials, there are in brief only two. They can now be opened and classified as four: the Śrāvaka Repository is the Tripiṭaka Teaching; the Bodhisattva Repository opens into the Shared, Distinct, and Perfect Teachings. The Tripiṭaka Teaching is taught for determinate śrāvakas; the Shared Teaching for śrāvakas who have lost the Great Vehicle resolve; the Distinct Teaching for gradually awakening bodhisattvas; and the Perfect Teaching for suddenly awakening bodhisattvas. Not only are the names and numbers of the two repositories and Four Teachings easily reconciled; their meanings and intentions coincide at a profound level. The present Four Teachings and the ancient two repositories correspond perfectly, without divergence.
The earlier wording is brief but its meaning is broad; the single formulation encompasses many implications. To explain what is hidden and make it manifest, one must therefore argue at length. It is like fishing and hunting through rivers and marshes: when there is much to catch, many nets and traps must be tied. Do fishers and hunters love prolixity? They speak at length because they have no alternative.
The Master’s Words Concluding the Preceding and Giving Rise to the Following
At this point Guanding turns to recording the words of Master Zhiyi: “With the Five Chapters, I have discussed the Profound Meaning only in brief. I cannot express the wondrous meaning beyond the words and have merely given a rough account of what I hold in mind. I have always regretted that speech cannot fully convey intent; how much less could a record fully preserve speech? Nevertheless, if one can first seek the seven meanings, next use them to comprehend the ten subtleties, and then examine the seven within the separate explanation, the remaining Five Chapters will link and follow one another with a pattern as clear as embroidery. The scriptures cited will confirm them one by one, and every sentence will circle back into agreement. They will not merely encompass the various named teachings and include the half and full.
“One can further bring contemplation to fulfillment within present phenomena, like breaking through the dry earth of ordinary beings and seeing the wet clay of the sages’ Dharma. The path of perfect penetration becomes open here, and the illumination of universal illumination becomes clear here. All this has been supplied above. From this point onward, the scripture itself will be interpreted passage by passage.”
At the end of the Fahua Xuanyi, the voice suddenly changes. The preceding Profound Meaning was taught by Zhiyi, but Guanding titles this long passage “The Recorder’s Private Record of Agreements and Differences.” He gathers teachings he had heard, scriptural and treatise evidence, and his own reconciliations. Only when he marks the final passage “the Master said” does he begin recording Zhiyi’s concluding words.
This level of authorship illuminates the problem addressed by the entire passage. In classifying the teaching, later readers faced with many scriptures repeatedly tried to arrange them in a single line: which came first, which later, which was shallow, and which profound. Guanding returns the question to the wording of the scriptures, the persons addressed, and the purpose of each teaching. Time can record an assembly, but time alone cannot determine the Dharma’s meaning.
Three Statements in One Treatise Cannot Be Flattened into a Single Ranking
The opening asks about the relation between Prajñā and the Lotus. One passage of the same treatise calls Prajñā the greatest among ten great scriptures; another includes the Lotus within the wholesome Dharmas of Prajñā; a third distinguishes secret from non-secret according to whether the buddhahood of those of the Two Vehicles is expressly taught; and another appears to treat Prajñā and the Lotus as different names. If one grasps only the word “greatest,” every other statement will be forced onto one scale of superiority and inferiority. Yet that is precisely the question: why does a single treatise permit several different formulations?
An earlier explanation reconciles them through real and skillful wisdom. Sages enter the absence of marks with an undiscriminating mind, like many streams flowing into the sea. In guiding sentient beings, they take the absence of marks as the purport, like empty space embracing everything. Prajñā specializes in clarifying these two aspects, and the other scriptures are therefore included within it. The questioner immediately reverses the claim: if the other scriptures also clarify both kinds of wisdom, why can they not include Prajñā in return? To answer only that Prajñā “specializes in clarifying” them merely repeats its greatness and does not resolve the opposition among the three statements.
Guanding introduces common and uncommon Prajñā. This turn does not substitute another chronology of scriptures; it changes the unit of comparison. If only book titles are compared, the natural question is which scripture outranks another. If one examines the meaning taught within them, then every scripture that clarifies uncommon Prajñā can be equal in meaning to uncommon Prajñā. “Inclusion” no longer means one book swallowing another, but the mutual containment of corresponding Dharma-meanings.
The questions about secrecy and manifestation employ the same method. Bodhisattvas becoming buddhas is easy to understand; the buddhahood of those of the Two Vehicles contradicts what they heard before. The earlier explanation therefore uses the ease and difficulty of medicine and poison: using medicine as medicine is easy, but using poison as medicine is hard. The text immediately points out, however, that secrecy and manifestation extend through both Great and Lesser Vehicles. They cannot be fixed as a simple equation in which the Lotus is profound and Prajñā shallow. Both scriptures teach that bodhisattvas attain the forbearance of non-arising and possess the six superknowledges, so both have a profound and great dimension. Only when the single criterion is whether the buddhahood of those of the Two Vehicles is expressly stated can Prajñā be called incomplete in that respect.
The ensuing series of questions prevents a judgment about one aspect from usurping the whole. In relation to the two kinds of wisdom, Prajñā may be called profound and great; in relation to the buddhahood of those of the Two Vehicles, something remains unexplained. Sengrui describes Prajñā as illumination and the Lotus as reality, praising on the one side the completion of inquiry into principle and the nature’s illumination of the myriad practices, and on the other the revelation of true transformation. The questioner still replies with the image of grasping a dead tree for support: if the explanation one relies on cannot stand, the person and the stump fall together. Genuine reconciliation cannot merely find reasons for a predetermined hierarchy. It must accommodate the multiple relations disclosed by the scriptures and treatises themselves.
Different Numbers of Repositories Mark Different Ways of Gathering the Teaching
Some scriptures and treatises speak of two repositories, others of three or four, and still another of eight. A larger number does not mean that the later classification necessarily overturns the earlier. Each division answers its own question of how the teachings are gathered. The two repositories classify broadly by śrāvakas and bodhisattvas; the three add a Miscellaneous Repository; the four further open a Buddha Repository; and the eight range from Embryonic Transformation and Intermediate Existence through the Vajra and Buddha Repositories.
Guanding provisionally correlates the classifications level by level. The two repositories each have their counterpart; the three correspond in sequence to Śrāvaka, Miscellaneous, and Bodhisattva; and the four correspond one by one. The eight begin with the descent into the womb, while another system of teachings begins with the turning of the Dharma-wheel. Because their starting points differ, they can be viewed in relation to one another only after the Dharma-wheel has begun to turn. Embryonic Transformation and Intermediate Existence have one status before they are explained to Ānanda and another after they are explained; the remaining six repositories are then distributed through sudden and gradual.
The measure of the passage lies in its closing statement: the Buddha’s intent is difficult to fathom, and this is only a provisional correlation made by looking at the systems in relation to one another. Reconciliation enables classifications to speak to each other without erasing their different beginnings, purposes, and boundaries. If a provisional comparison is turned into the only allowable table, the very method meant to open differences becomes a new form of confinement.
The Names of the Four Teachings Must Be Grounded in What Is Taught
Someone asks in which scripture the names and meanings of the Four Teachings are found. Guanding first cites the four great teaching-principles in the Chang Ahan, and then the four kinds of sūtra in the Moon-Lamp Samādhi Sūtra. The former concern four sources of report: hearing from the Buddha, from the harmonious community, from many bhikṣus, or from one bhikṣu. The latter list conditioned activities, censure, afflictions, and purity, which are then correlated with the meanings of the Four Teachings.
Guanding’s private interpretation unfolds from the four terms themselves. Conditioned activities arise through causes and conditions. Censure brings one to comprehend fault and wrongdoing within the substance of dharmas. Afflictions are explained through the image of entering the great ocean and obtaining a jewel: without afflictions, wisdom would have no occasion to appear. When the single name “pure” is raised, self, permanence, bliss, and the other meanings are naturally present. He is not merely seeking four identical labels but asking how each term bears a corresponding direction of cultivation and realization.
Each teaching also possesses all four kinds of sūtra. In the Tripiṭaka Teaching, conditioned activities form the axis: activities are accumulation, their fruit is suffering, the antidote to afflictions is the path, and the purification of activities is cessation. In the Shared Teaching, censure is the axis: censuring activities is accumulation, censuring forms of existence is suffering, censuring the antidote to afflictions is the path, and censuring purity is cessation. In the Distinct Teaching, afflictions form the axis: afflicted activities are accumulation, afflicted forms of existence are suffering, the censure of afflicted activities is the path, and the purification of afflictions is cessation. In the Perfect Teaching, purity forms the axis: nirvāṇa is birth-and-death as the purification of suffering; awakening is affliction as the purification of accumulation; affliction is awakening as the purification of the path; and birth-and-death is nirvāṇa as the purification of cessation.
The point of this fourfold progression is not to repeat one set of Four Truths four times. It shows how suffering, accumulation, path, and cessation are expressed differently as the meaning contemplated changes. The Moon-Lamp Samādhi Sūtra further lists four discourses, four Dharmas, four objects, four gateways, four knowledges that sever afflictions, four sufferings, four accumulations, and four paths. By saying that all correspond to the Four Teachings, Guanding points toward a much broader field of cross-reading.
The Four Houses in the Treatise on the Ten Stages open another side of the question. One moment of mind possesses the ten perfections, the four means of gathering, the thirty-seven factors, and the Four Houses. The treatise lists the House of Prajñā, the House of Truth, the House of Relinquishing Afflictions, and the House of Purifying Suffering. Guanding begins his correlation with the House of Purifying Suffering and then proceeds through Relinquishing Afflictions and Prajñā to the House of Truth. The citation retains the order of the treatise, while his interpretation unfolds a different sequence according to the meaning of practice: beginning with purified suffering, passing through direct comprehension of the markless and Dharma-gates numerous as the sands of the Ganges, and returning to practice grounded in the true mark. Each sequence explains something of its own; they need not be forced into a single list.
Sudden and Gradual Belong to Those Addressed, Not to a Fixed Clock
Three ancient theories are presented. One says that the teaching of the Buddha’s lifetime does not go beyond sudden and gradual, with the gradual divided into seven stages and five periods. Another says that everything before the passing between the twin śāla trees was incomplete and that only nirvāṇa was complete. The third says that the Buddha responds to myriad beings with one voice, received simultaneously by those of great and lesser faculties, so sudden and gradual should not be established. Guanding tests each against the scriptures and treatises. The four Āgamas and five Vinayas do not exhaust profound meaning and so cannot be called sudden; yet their teaching extends throughout the Buddha’s lifetime and does not advance in the sequence assigned to the Great Vehicle, so they do not fit that form of gradual teaching. Sudden and gradual alone do not encompass the teachings that were actually given.
He does not therefore deny sudden teaching. From the Tathāgata’s side, Great and Lesser Vehicle teachings can be presented at the same time and need have no temporal priority. From the side of those addressed, some receive the teaching suddenly and others enter gradually. Sudden and gradual reside in differences of understanding among sentient beings. Fixed chronological boxes cannot carry this criterion. Two truths are thereby preserved: the Dharma does not need time to establish its depth, while sentient beings truly do receive it suddenly or gradually.
Successive Questions Return Classification to What Beings Are Ready to Hear
The claim that the Buddha first taught only the Five Precepts and Ten Wholesome Actions to Trapuṣa and Bhallika immediately meets a difficulty: the Buddha teaches according to what beings are ready to hear, so why could this teaching occur only at the beginning and only for two people? The two elders attained more than human-and-heaven goodness and also received predictions of buddhahood. They bowed to the Buddha and left without going to the Deer Park, so their meeting cannot be linked before Kauṇḍinya’s in a single gradual sequence.
The claim that the separate teachings of the Three Vehicles were confined to twelve years meets the same difficulty. If people after the twelve years still needed the Four Truths, dependent arising, and the six perfections, then if the Buddha taught them, the teaching exceeded the deadline; if He did not, He abandoned beings ready to receive instruction. The Zengyi Ahan’s account of precepts taught briefly for twelve years and then established extensively as blemishes arose, and the Chang Ahan’s narrative extending to nirvāṇa, both show teachings continuing whenever they were needed. A single deadline cannot cut them off.
The claim that Prajñā, the Vimalakīrti, and the Sūtra of Brahmā’s Questions were taught during a thirty-year period is first asked to produce a scriptural basis for those thirty years. The attempt to use Maitreya’s “more than forty years” to establish that the Lotus necessarily followed the Larger Prajñā is then met by the Da Zhidu Lun’s account of Subhūti already having heard the Lotus. If the scriptures and treatises do not present one linear sequence, one cannot draw the chronology in advance and then force every passage into place.
The deeper question is why the Larger Prajñā, the Lotus, and the Nirvāṇa should be assigned a fixed hierarchy of depth. Buddha-nature is also called Prajñā and the One Vehicle; the One Vehicle is the purport of the Lotus, while Prajñā is taught in the Larger Prajñā. The Larger Prajñā teaches the emptiness of form and even the emptiness of great nirvāṇa, and also says “nirvāṇa is not a conjured phenomenon”; the Vimalakīrti says the Buddha’s body is free from the five forms of impermanence. Emptiness, permanence, buddha-nature, and the One Vehicle illuminate one another across these scriptures. Different titles do not by themselves justify imposing superiority and inferiority.
Using Ānanda and Kāśyapa’s attendance at different assemblies to rank the scriptures creates another immediate difficulty. If the two had not understood permanence at the Lotus assembly and were absent from the Nirvāṇa assembly, how could they understand permanence and transmit the Nirvāṇa? Śāriputra and Maudgalyāyana entered extinction before the Buddha and were not present between the twin śāla trees. Would that mean they never understood permanence? The text answers through responsive participants: these śrāvakas accompany the Buddha’s work of transformation, appearing as great within the great teaching and as lesser within the lesser. Their manifested identity serves the teaching and cannot in turn become a scale for ranking scriptural meaning.
The Lotus has already taught that emergence from the royal palace was not the beginning of buddhahood and that the Buddha awakened in the remote past. The final teaching of permanence in the Nirvāṇa is for the group of beings who were only then ready to hear it. Those who heard the Lotus did not need to wait for another assembly to understand permanence. The Nirvāṇa itself invokes the predictions received by eight thousand śrāvakas in the Lotus as an example of great benefit, thereby showing a shared principle rather than establishing depth by temporal order.
The Great Vehicle Scriptures Have Different Names and One Destination
The Lotus Upadeśa says that the Lotus is Perfect in principle and ultimate in teaching, without deficiency. The Da Zhidu Lun praises it as profound and explains why it is entrusted to bodhisattvas. These passages do not place the Lotus atop another competitive hierarchy; they remove the suspicion that it must wait for a later scripture to become complete.
The various Great Vehicle scriptures are named according to what is appropriate. Avataṃsaka, Immeasurable Meanings, and Lotus are names of samādhis; Prajñā is named for great wisdom; the Vimalakīrti for inconceivable liberation; great nirvāṇa for ultimate cessation; and Mañjuśrī’s question about awakening for the fulfilled path. Their names emphasize different entrances, but the fruit they teach is the fruit of buddhahood, the cause they teach is practice on the bodhisattva stages, the principle they teach is Dharma-nature, and the beings they principally address are bodhisattvas. Different names enable sentient beings to enter through different doors; the destination does not thereby split apart.
The Two Repositories Are Determined by Their Principal Audience, Not Everyone Present
The scriptures and treatises divide the twelve divisions into a Śrāvaka Repository and a Bodhisattva Repository and gather the paths out of suffering taught for śrāvakas and bodhisattvas into those two. Accounts of compilation likewise assign the collection of Mahākāśyapa and Ānanda to the Śrāvaka Repository and the Great Vehicle collection of Mañjuśrī and Ānanda to the Bodhisattva Repository. The Nirvāṇa says that the eleven divisions are upheld by those of the Two Vehicles and Vaipulya by bodhisattvas. Diverse textual evidence converges on two broad collections.
Each repository addresses two kinds of person. Within the Śrāvaka Repository, determinate śrāvakas have long cultivated the lesser teaching, delight only in it, and do not proceed to the Great Vehicle after realization. Śrāvakas who have lost bodhicitta once aroused the Great Vehicle resolve but forgot it while passing through birth and death; they first receive the lesser teaching and later still proceed to the Great Vehicle. One group remains and one departs, but when they receive the lesser Dharma they are alike, so both belong to the Śrāvaka Repository.
Within the Bodhisattva Repository, great beings of sudden awakening do not come through the lesser teaching but enter the Great Vehicle straightaway. Bodhisattvas who enter gradually come from among those earlier śrāvakas who lost their aspiration and enter the Great Vehicle through the lesser teaching. Their routes differ, but when they receive the great Dharma they are alike, so both belong to the Bodhisattva Repository.
Those present in an assembly cannot displace those principally addressed. A bodhisattva may appear responsively within the Śrāvaka Repository without being its principal recipient; a śrāvaka may be present within the Bodhisattva Repository without constituting its principal purport. The teaching is named according to the principal person addressed and the principal Dharma taught. Why, then, are there only two repositories when three vehicles are taught? Those who hear dependent arising are gathered with the śrāvakas, while pratyekabuddhas appear during ages without a buddha, display supernormal powers, and remain silent. They do not leave a separate body of teaching to be compiled, so the scriptures are gathered in brief as two repositories.
Opening “Only Two in Brief” into Four
Guanding finally correlates the two repositories with the Four Teachings. The Śrāvaka Repository opens as the Tripiṭaka Teaching; the Bodhisattva Repository opens as the Shared, Distinct, and Perfect Teachings. The four corresponding groups are determinate śrāvakas, śrāvakas who have lost their Great Vehicle resolve, gradually awakening bodhisattvas, and suddenly awakening bodhisattvas. The correlation first honors the concise gathering of the teaching as “only two in brief” and then unfolds the differences of faculties and meaning within it. Brevity and detail do not refute each other; they are two viewing distances.
Guanding therefore uses the image of fishing and hunting in rivers and marshes. When there is much to catch, many nets and traps must be tied. Speaking at length is not a love of prolixity; if hidden meaning is to be disclosed, the argument must unfold with it. Only then does Guanding turn to recording Zhiyi’s words. The Five Chapters offer the Profound Meaning only in brief, and if speech itself cannot exhaust intent, how could writing exhaust speech? Yet if the seven meanings are used to comprehend the ten subtleties and then examined within the separate explanation, the Five Chapters link together like embroidery and the scriptures cited agree sentence by sentence.
The final two images bring classification back to contemplation. One breaks through the dry earth of ordinary beings and sees the wet clay of the sages’ Dharma; perfect penetration in teaching must become universal illumination in wisdom. The discourse on the Profound Meaning ends here and turns toward interpreting the scripture. If classification does not lead into contemplative practice, it remains nothing more than an order written on paper.
Through the Eye of the Shiqian
Zhanran first establishes the boundary of authorship for the entire passage. From “the recorder’s private record of agreements and differences” onward, this is Zhang’an’s miscellaneous record of divergent reports he himself heard, not Zhiyi’s original teaching. Only at “the Master said” does the recorder begin transmitting the Master’s intent. This single observation returns the passage’s many voices to their proper levels: statements in the treatise, other people’s reconciliations, Guanding’s objections and private interpretations, and Zhiyi’s conclusion cannot be treated as one person speaking directly at one time.
The Mirror divides the divergent reports into four gateways: distinguishing agreement and difference between Prajñā and the Lotus; correlating the separation and combination of the repositories; clarifying the basis of the names and meanings of the Four Teachings; and refuting ancient classifications. It summarizes the first gateway as three statements in one treatise—Prajñā apparently superior, the Lotus apparently superior, and the two apparently equal. Zhanran explains that uncommon Prajñā encompasses all dharmas, so the inclusion of the Lotus presents no difficulty. He also distinguishes concealed secrecy from wondrous profundity, so the same graph does not obscure two different lines of meaning.
Zhanran observes that the older explanation exalting Prajñā through real and skillful wisdom still does not reconcile the three statements. The Mirror’s meaning is not another ranking of the two scriptures. It first distinguishes common from uncommon Prajñā and then explains that uncommon Prajñā can encompass all dharmas. The question concerning “not yet disclosing the provisional” and “secrecy” must likewise be read according to the criterion under discussion: disclosure of the provisional yields one judgment, while ease and difficulty of understanding yield another. A judgment shifts with the point at issue and cannot be detached from the premise of its question and answer.
The general principle of the repository gateway is to correlate separation and combination through the Buddha’s teaching of one lifetime. The two, three, four, and eight repositories each have their own basis, and provisional reconciliation establishes only a relation among them. The four correspond one by one, while the eight correlate according to temporal stage and what was taught; the Lotus is not among the eight repositories. Reconciliation thus preserves each system’s basis while enabling several classifications to be viewed together.
The gateway concerning the basis of the Four Teachings especially distinguishes “also numbering four” from “corresponding in meaning.” The four great teaching-principles of the Chang Ahan merely share the number four and are not equivalent to the Four Teachings discussed later. The four kinds of sūtra in the Moon-Lamp Samādhi Sūtra enter the actual correlation of meanings. The Four Houses, meanwhile, borrow the moment-by-moment possession of Dharmas at a high stage to reveal the possession of Dharmas in the beginner’s mind; the list in the treatise is not simply treated as another ready-made set of names for the Four Teachings.
Zhanran further counts seventy-seven groups of four in the relevant passage of the Moon-Lamp Samādhi Sūtra, giving a direction for unfolding the root treatise’s brief instruction to understand the details from that scripture. In discussing the Four Houses, he emphasizes that the treatise expressly speaks of full possession moment after moment and that Guanding borrows this to establish full possession in the beginner’s mind. Both explanations first respect the original setting of scripture or treatise and then draw out the meaning that can be correlated. The borrowed level is high, but the entrance to practice it reveals is this present moment of mind.
The refutation of ancient classifications is illuminated as three levels: presentation of the ancient views, refutation, and the present establishment. The refutation first rejects fixed chronology and then examines each assigned period. In discussing the three scriptures, it unfolds through different names and one substance, agreement in meaning with different expression, and proof through the persons involved. The present establishment of two repositories likewise has five steps: textual evidence establishes the repositories, persons are divided in relation to them, subsidiary and principal participants are distinguished, a question and answer resolves the difficulty, and the repositories are opened into the teachings. The root treatise may appear to range widely through citations, but its skeleton remains clear: the repositories are established from scriptures and treatises, their persons are distinguished by the principal audience, and the two repositories are opened into the Four Teachings.
The final passage also has three levels: the recorder explains why he must speak at length, records the Master’s intent, and concludes the preceding while giving rise to the following. The seven meanings in the Master’s words first comprehend the ten subtleties and are then brought into the separate explanation. “Perfect penetration” concludes the teaching, while “universal illumination” concludes contemplation. The Mirror finally leaves not a closed chronological table but a way of reading: distinguish who is speaking, for whom the teaching is given, and on what basis it is taught, and then enter present contemplation through the teachings as they link together.

As Fascicle Ten, Part Two brings the discussion of the characteristics of the teaching to an end, Guanding separately records divergent explanations he had heard. In classifying the teaching, he first reconciles three apparently conflicting statements about Prajñā and the Lotus, next correlates the various repositories with the Four Teachings, then asks what scriptural basis supports the names and meanings of the Four Teachings, and finally refutes fixed schemes of sudden and gradual teaching, the seven stages, and the five periods. Only at the end does the phrase “the Master said” introduce Zhiyi’s own concluding statement, which closes the Profound Meaning and turns toward interpreting the scripture.
1. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
This unit begins with 「○記者私錄異同。」 tr. “The recorder privately records agreements and differences”〔T33 0811b28〕. Its main text ends with 「此備於前,今更消文於後也。」 tr. “This has been fully set forth above; now the text will be interpreted below”〔0814a17〕, whose last graph falls on 0814a18. The fascicle-end colophon on 0814a19 is not part of the main text.
The Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian (T1717) first establishes the level of authorship, expressly stating, 「是章安雜錄隨己異聞,不關於記大師說也。」 tr. “This is Zhang’an’s miscellaneous record of divergent reports that he himself had heard; it is not concerned with recording the Great Master’s teaching”〔T33 0962a04〕. The entire passage therefore cannot be attributed wholesale to Zhiyi on the basis of the half-fascicle’s general byline. Only the final section beginning “the Master said” is Guanding’s report of the Master’s words within his private record.
Zhanran divides the passage into two great parts: first, 「初雜記異聞」 tr. “first, a miscellaneous record of divergent reports”〔0962a06〕; and then, beginning with the recorder’s observation that the wording is brief, 「述己推師結前生後」 tr. “he states his own view, refers it back to the Master, concludes the preceding, and gives rise to what follows”〔0962a07〕. The first part has four gateways: 「初料簡般若與法華以辨同異,二明經論諸藏離合,三明四教名義所憑,四破古五時七階不同。」 tr. “First, analyzing Prajñā and the Lotus to distinguish agreement and difference; second, clarifying the separation and combination of the various repositories in the scriptures and treatises; third, clarifying the textual basis for the names and meanings of the Four Teachings; fourth, refuting the differences among the ancient five periods and seven stages”〔0962a07〕. The second part has three levels: the recorder’s own statement, his report of the Master’s intent, and the conclusion of the preceding that gives rise to the following〔0963c09〕.
Within the four gateways, the questions and answers of the root treatise may further be read as twenty-one sections: three difficulties concerning Prajñā and the Lotus; two earlier attempts at reconciliation; the appeal to Sengrui; the enumeration of the repositories and their provisional correlation; the four great teachings and the four kinds of sūtra; the Four Houses; three ancient classifications; the general refutation of fixed sudden and gradual teaching; the successive refutation of the first through fifth periods; the common destination of the Great Vehicle scriptures; scriptural support for the two repositories; four kinds of persons within the two repositories; opening the two repositories into the Four Teachings; the recorder’s need to speak at length; and the Master’s double conclusion in teaching and contemplation. These are reading divisions for a long chapter; they do not alter the Shiqian’s formal hierarchy of two parts, four gateways, and three concluding levels.
2. Formation and Transmission
The root treatise’s own account of its formation records that Guanding 「次在江陵,奉蒙玄義」 tr. “next, while in Jiangling, respectfully received the Profound Meaning”〔T33 0681a16〕 and further states, 「聿遵聖典,書而傳之,《玄》、《文》各十卷」 tr. “thereupon following the sacred teaching, he wrote it down and transmitted it; the Xuanyi and the Wenju each comprised ten fascicles”〔0681a22〕. Yuquan is supported only by the later record in the Guoqing Bailu (T1934), 「至荊答地恩。 tr. “He arrived in Jingzhou to repay the kindness of the land and built Yuquan Monastery; Zhang’an respectfully received the Profound Meaning”〔T46 0823b28〕; that later witness does not revise the root treatise’s own account of its circumstances. This unit is entitled “the recorder’s private record of agreements and differences” and is expressly classified by the Shiqian as Guanding’s miscellaneous record. Only the final words introduced by “the Master said” report Zhiyi’s speech.
3. Scriptures and Treatises Cited by Zhiyi
The heading required for this corpus is retained, but in this unit the person who cites, reports, and correlates the materials is principally the recorder Guanding. The following inventory includes every scripture, treatise, attribution, and textual setting used in the unit. “The wording in the root treatise” means only the wording preserved in T1716 and does not reattribute it to Zhiyi. “Verification in the received text” follows the title and wording of each extant canonical witness. Verbatim agreement, excerpting, paraphrase, synthesis across passages, and unidentified referents are distinguished rather than collapsed.
Prajñā, the Lotus, and Sengrui
| Item | Wording in the root treatise | Verification in the received text | Relationship |
|---|---|---|---|
tr. “Someone cites the ‘Convergence of Schools’ chapter of the Treatise, which enumerates ten great scriptures, including the Cloud Sūtra, the Great Cloud Sūtra, and the Lotus Sūtra, and says that Prajñā is the greatest”〔T33 0811b28〕. | The Da Zhidu Lun (T1509) lists 「所謂《本起經》、《斷一切眾生疑經》、《華手經》、《法華經》、《雲經》、《大雲經》、《法雲經》、《彌勒問經》、《六波羅蜜經》、《摩訶般若波羅蜜經》」 tr. “the Sūtra of Original Arising, the Sūtra That Severs the Doubts of All Sentient Beings, the Flower Hand Sūtra, the Lotus Sūtra, the Cloud Sūtra, the Great Cloud Sūtra, the Dharma Cloud Sūtra, the Maitreya Questions Sūtra, the Six Perfections Sūtra, and the Mahāprajñāpāramitā Sūtra”〔T25 0394b17〕, and then says, 「此諸經中,般若波羅蜜最大故」 tr. “among these scriptures, the perfection of wisdom is the greatest”〔0394b22〕. | The received text lists ten titles. The root treatise names only three of them while retaining the conclusion that Prajñā is greatest. |
tr. “All other wholesome Dharmas enter into Prajñā, meaning that the Lotus Sūtra too is a wholesome Dharma”〔T33 0811c01〕. | The Da Zhidu Lun explains 「諸餘善法入般若波羅蜜」 tr. “all other wholesome Dharmas enter the perfection of wisdom”〔T25 0466b05〕 with 「是諸餘經,所謂《法華經》、《密迹經》等。」 tr. “these other scriptures are the Lotus Sūtra, the Miji Sūtra, and so forth”〔0466b05〕. | The root treatise condenses “other scriptures” into the statement that the Lotus too is a wholesome Dharma. |
tr. “The Lotus is secret, while Prajñā is not secret, because it does not clarify that those of the Two Vehicles become buddhas”〔T33 0811c02〕. “The perfection of wisdom is not a secret Dharma, whereas the Lotus and other scriptures say that arhats receive predictions of buddhahood”〔T25 0754b20〕. | The root treatise recasts the received wording as a balanced contrast between the Lotus and Prajñā. |
tr. “Prajñā and the Lotus are merely different names”〔T33 0811c03〕. | The directly corresponding statement in the Da Zhidu Lun is 「般若波羅蜜、摩訶衍一義,但名字異」 tr. “the perfection of wisdom and the Great Vehicle have one meaning and differ only in name”〔T25 0394b08〕; the same passage separately includes the Lotus Sūtra among ten Great Vehicle scriptures〔0394b17〕. | The received text has no sentence that directly calls Prajñā and the Lotus two different names. The root treatise reads two levels of the treatise together. |
tr. “The manifest teaching explains that arhats have severed delusion and are pure, whereas bodhisattvas have not severed delusion and are not pure; therefore bodhisattvas are placed later in the assembly”〔T33 0811c21〕. | The Da Zhidu Lun first states, 「佛法有二種:一、祕密,二、現示。」 tr. “The Buddha-Dharma is of two kinds: first, secret; second, manifest”〔T25 0084c19〕, and then says that in the manifest mode saints of all three vehicles have exhausted afflictions, whereas in the secret mode bodhisattvas attain the forbearance of non-arising, sever afflictions, and possess the six superknowledges〔0084c20〕. | The root treatise reads together the preceding and following implications of the treatise and calls “manifest” a “manifest teaching.” |
| Six | 「般若照也,法華實也,論窮理盡,性明萬行,則實不如照」 tr. “Prajñā is illumination; the Lotus is reality. In bringing its investigation of principle to completion and in its nature’s illumination of the myriad practices, reality does not equal illumination”〔T33 0812a04〕. | Sengrui’s preface to the Xiaopin Bore Boluomi Jing (T227) first says, 「《法華》鏡本以凝照,《般若》冥末以解懸。」 tr. “The Lotus mirrors the root so as to concentrate illumination; Prajñā searches the branches so as to resolve what hangs in doubt”〔T08 0536c27〕, and later reads, 「論其窮理盡性,夷明萬行,則實不如照;取其大明真化,解本無三,則照不如實。」 tr. “If one discusses its exhausting principle and fully realizing nature, evenly illuminating the myriad practices, then reality does not equal illumination; if one takes its greatly clarifying true transformation and explaining that originally there are not three, then illumination does not equal reality”〔0537a03〕. | The root treatise summarizes this as “Prajñā is illumination; the Lotus is reality.” Its punctuation and the graph 性明, “nature’s illumination,” differ from the received 盡性,夷明, “fully realizing nature, evenly illuminating.” |
tr. “Therefore, when profundity is praised, the achievement of Prajñā is weighty; when reality is extolled, the function of the Lotus is lofty”〔T33 0812a07〕. | Sengrui’s preface reads, 「是故歎深則《般若》之功重,美實則《法華》之用微。」 tr. “Therefore, when profundity is praised, the achievement of Prajñā is weighty; when reality is extolled, the function of the Lotus is subtle”〔T08 0537a05〕. | The forms “function is lofty” and “function is subtle” are recorded side by side without adjudication. |
The Various Repositories and the Basis for the Four Teachings
| Item | Wording in the root treatise | Verification in the received text | Relationship |
|---|---|---|---|
tr. “The mātṛkā has two repositories: the Śrāvaka Repository and the Bodhisattva Repository”〔T33 0812a11〕. | The Pusa Dichi Jing (T1581) contains the same classificatory setting: 「略說求菩薩藏、聲聞藏、外論、世工業處智。」 tr. “In brief, seeking knowledge of the Bodhisattva Repository, the Śrāvaka Repository, external treatises, and worldly crafts”〔T30 0902c20〕. | T1581 contains the same two-repository setting, but the term “mātṛkā” in the root treatise cannot on that basis be replaced by the title of that scripture. |
tr. “The eleven divisions of scripture are assigned to the Śrāvaka Repository, the Vaipulya division to the Bodhisattva Repository, and the twelve divisions together to the Miscellaneous Repository”〔T33 0812a13〕. | The Pusa Dichi Jing reads, 「十二部經,唯方廣部是菩薩藏,餘十一部是聲聞藏。」 tr. “Of the twelve divisions of scripture, only the Vaipulya division is the Bodhisattva Repository; the other eleven divisions are the Śrāvaka Repository”〔T30 0902c21〕. | The first two assignments agree. “The twelve divisions together are the Miscellaneous Repository” is a further correlation in the root treatise. |
tr. “There is also a classification into four repositories, further opening a Buddha Repository”〔T33 0812a14〕. | The root treatise does not name its source, and the short statement cannot be uniquely assigned to any extant scripture or treatise. | The referent remains under investigation; similarity of title does not warrant assigning it to the Fozang Jing. |
tr. “The Repository of Embryonic Transformation, the Intermediate-Existence Repository, the Mahāyāna-Vaipulya Repository, the Precepts and Discipline Repository, the Ten Abodes Repository, the Miscellaneous Repository, the Vajra Repository, and the Buddha Repository”〔T33 0812a15〕. | The Pusa Cong Doushu Tian Jiangshen Mutai Shuo Guangpu Jing (T384) reads, 「最初出經,胎化藏為第一,中陰藏第二,摩訶衍、方等藏第三,戒律藏第四,十住菩薩藏第五,雜藏第六,金剛藏第七,佛藏第八」 tr. “Among the scriptures first produced, the Repository of Embryonic Transformation is first, the Intermediate-Existence Repository second, the Mahāyāna and Vaipulya Repository third, the Precepts and Discipline Repository fourth, the Ten-Abodes Bodhisattva Repository fifth, the Miscellaneous Repository sixth, the Vajra Repository seventh, and the Buddha Repository eighth”〔T12 1058b19〕. | The root treatise omits the ordinal wording and “bodhisattva,” and writes Mahāyāna and Vaipulya as a single compound. |
| Twelve | The Chang Ahan, “Practice” chapter, is cited as saying, 「佛在圓彌城北尸舍婆村,說四大教者,從佛聞,從和合眾、多比丘聞,從一比丘聞,是名四大教。」 tr. “The Buddha was in Śiśapā Village north of Yuanmi City and taught the four great teachings: hearing from the Buddha; hearing from the harmonious community and from many bhikṣus; and hearing from a single bhikṣu. These are called the four great teachings”〔T33 0812a28〕. | The Chang Ahan Jing (T1) places the Buddha north of Fumi City in the Śiśapā Grove〔T01 0017b29〕 and there presents the four great teaching-principles〔0017c01〕. The four sources are hearing directly from the Buddha〔0017c04〕, from a harmonious Saṅgha of learned elders〔0017c15〕, from many bhikṣus who preserve Dharma and discipline〔0017c27〕, and from a single such bhikṣu〔0018a10〕. | The forms “Yuan/Fu” and “village/grove” differ. The root treatise abbreviates the four received sources into a short list. |
tr. “Fascicle Six of the Moon-Lamp Samādhi Sūtra explains four kinds of sūtra: conditioned activities, censure, afflictions, and purity”〔T33 0812b02〕. | The Yuedeng Sanmei Jing (T639) reads, 「一者、諸行修多羅不可思議,二者、呵責有為修多羅不可思議,三者、煩惱修多羅不可思議,四者、清淨修多羅不可思議」 tr. “First, the inconceivable sūtra of conditioned activities; second, the inconceivable sūtra censuring the conditioned; third, the inconceivable sūtra of afflictions; fourth, the inconceivable sūtra of purity”〔T15 0579b07〕. | The root treatise omits “inconceivable” and abbreviates “censuring the conditioned” to “censure.” |
| Fourteen | 「彼經復明:四論、四法、四境界、四門、四斷煩惱智、四苦、四集、四道,皆與四教相應」 tr. “That scripture further explains four discourses, four Dharmas, four objects, four gateways, four knowledges that sever afflictions, four sufferings, four accumulations, and four paths; all correspond to the Four Teachings”〔T33 0812b18〕. | The same continuous setting in the Yuedeng Sanmei Jing successively includes 「四種言論不可思議」 tr. “four kinds of inconceivable discourse”〔T15 0577b25〕, 「四種法」 tr. “four kinds of Dharma”〔0577c02〕, 「四種境界」 tr. “four kinds of object”〔0579b26〕, 「四種斷煩惱智」 tr. “four kinds of knowledge that sever afflictions”〔0579c11〕, and 「四種苦智」 tr. “four kinds of knowledge of suffering”〔0580a12〕, among other groups. | The sequence agrees, though not every received heading has precisely the same form as the root treatise. The Shiqian counts seventy-seven groups of four in the wider passage. |
tr. “One moment of mind possesses the ten perfections, the four means of gathering, the thirty-seven factors, and the Four Houses”〔T33 0812b21〕. | The Shidi Jing Lun (T1522) reads, 「念念具足十波羅蜜,亦具足四攝法,亦具足四家三十七助菩提分法」 tr. “Moment after moment, one fully possesses the ten perfections, fully possesses the four means of gathering, and fully possesses the thirty-seven aids to awakening of the Four Houses”〔T26 0175b17〕. | “One moment of mind possesses” differs from “moment after moment fully possesses,” and the placement of the Four Houses differs. |
tr. “The House of Prajñā, the House of Truth, the House of Relinquishing Afflictions, and the House of Purifying Suffering”〔T33 0812b22〕. | The Shidi Jing Lun reads, 「家者,般若家、諦家、捨煩惱家、苦清淨家故。」 tr. “The houses are the House of Prajñā, the House of Truth, the House of Relinquishing Afflictions, and the House of Purifying Suffering”〔T26 0175c14〕. | The names and sequence of the Four Houses agree. |
Scriptures Cited in Refuting Ancient Classifications
| Item | Wording in the root treatise | Verification in the received text | Relationship |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seventeen | 「達摩欝多羅釋教迹義云:教者謂佛被下之言,迹謂蹤跡」 tr. “Dharmottara’s Meaning of the Traces of the Teaching says: ‘Teaching means the Buddha’s words bestowed upon those below; traces mean tracks’”〔T33 0812b29〕. | No independent work entitled Meaning of the Traces of the Teaching has been located in the received canon. | The referent remains under investigation and may be a lost work. It is not conflated with the catalog attribution “recorded by Dharmottara.” |
tr. “Further, in the Five Precepts Sūtra, the two elders attain the forbearance in which dharmas do not arise, three hundred people attain the forbearance of faith, and two hundred attain the fruit of stream-entry”〔T33 0812c20〕. | The Fahua Jing Xuanqian Zhengshi (X0592) records only, 「大唐內典錄有提謂波利經二卷,今藏中無。」 tr. “The Great Tang Catalog of Inner Canonical Works lists a two-fascicle Sūtra of Trapuṣa and Bhallika, which is now absent from the canon”〔X 0630a13〕. | The later note attests an old catalog title and its absence from that canon, but it does not supply the three groups and numbers in the root treatise. The specific source remains under investigation. |
tr. “The Buddha bestowed a prediction on the two elders: their title would be Tathāgata Mìchéng”〔T33 0812c22〕. | The Puyao Jing (T186) reads, 「諸賈客等當得作佛,名曰蜜成如來」 tr. “The merchants and the others will attain buddhahood and be called Tathāgata Mìchéng”〔T03 0527a19〕. | The two forms use different graphs for mì, and the received text speaks more broadly of the merchants and others. |
tr. “For twelve years Śākyamuni taught the precepts only in brief; later, when blemishes arose, he established them extensively”〔T33 0813a05〕. | The Zengyi Ahan Jing (T125) reads, 「十二年中無有瑕穢,亦以一偈為禁戒」 tr. “During the twelve years there was no stain, and a single verse served as the prohibition”〔T02 0787b05〕, and later, as breaches of discipline arise, says 「轉有二百五十戒」 tr. “they gradually become two hundred and fifty precepts”〔0787b10〕. | The root treatise condenses this into three steps: brief instruction, the arising of blemishes, and extensive establishment. |
| Twenty-one | The Traveling Sūtra in the Chang Ahan is summarized by 「乃至涅槃」 tr. “extending through nirvāṇa”〔T33 0813a06〕. | The “Traveling Sūtra” of the Chang Ahan Jing (T1) begins at T01 0011a07 and later explicitly narrates the Buddha’s parinirvāṇa〔0027b15〕. | “Extending through nirvāṇa” summarizes the narrative span of the entire scripture; it is not a verbatim sentence from the received text. |
| Twenty-two | 「人言第三時,三十年中說空宗《般若》、《維摩》、《思益》」 tr. “People say that during the third period, lasting thirty years, the Buddha taught the emptiness school of Prajñā, the Vimalakīrti, and the Sūtra of Brahmā’s Questions”〔T33 0813a07〕. | The received works are respectively the Mohe Bore Boluomi Jing (T223), the Weimojie Suoshuo Jing (T475), and the Siyi Fantian Suowen Jing (T586). | The root treatise names the scriptures only in reporting an ancient classification. The claim of “thirty years” is itself being questioned and cannot be established by the titles. |
| Twenty-three | 「《法華經》中彌勒言佛成道來,始過四十餘年」 tr. “In the Lotus Sūtra, Maitreya says that only a little more than forty years have passed since the Buddha attained the Way”〔T33 0813a09〕. | The Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma (T262) reads, 「從是已來,始過四十餘年。」 tr. “Since then, only a little more than forty years have passed”〔T09 0041c06〕. | The core wording agrees. In the original setting, Maitreya is raising a difficulty about the Buddha’s recent awakening and the bodhisattvas he has taught for a very long time. |
| Twenty-four | 「須菩提於《法華》中,聞說舉手低頭,皆得作佛」 tr. “In the Lotus, Subhūti heard it said that those who merely raise a hand or bow their head will all attain buddhahood”〔T33 0813a11〕. | The Da Zhidu Lun first says, 「須菩提聞《法華經》中說」 tr. “Subhūti heard it said in the Lotus Sūtra”〔T25 0713b25〕, and gives the content as 「於佛所作少功德,乃至戲笑一稱南無佛,漸漸必當作佛。」 tr. “Making even a little merit in relation to a buddha—even playfully uttering a single ‘Homage to the Buddha’—one will gradually and certainly become a buddha”〔0713b26〕. | “Raising a hand and bowing the head” in the root treatise differs from “playfully uttering a single homage to the Buddha” in the received text. |
tr. “The Larger Prajñā teaches the emptiness of ultimate truth, which does not differ from the emptiness taught in the Nirvāṇa Sūtra: both say that form is empty and that even great nirvāṇa is empty”〔T33 0813a17〕. | The Mohe Bore Boluomi Jing separately reads, 「習應色空,是名與般若波羅蜜相應。」 tr. “Practicing in correspondence with the emptiness of form is called corresponding with the perfection of wisdom”〔T08 0222c10〕, and 「第一義名涅槃。 tr. “Ultimate truth is called nirvāṇa. Nirvāṇa is empty of nirvāṇa, because it is neither permanent nor annihilated”〔0250b24〕. | The root treatise reads together passages that are separate in the received scripture; it is not quoting one continuous sentence. |
| Twenty-six | The root treatise cites the Larger Prajñā as saying 「涅槃非化」 tr. “nirvāṇa is not a conjured phenomenon”〔T33 0813a19〕. | The Mohe Bore Boluomi Jing frames the point as the question 「云何言涅槃一法非如化?」 tr. “How can it be said that nirvāṇa alone is not like a conjured phenomenon?”〔T08 0416a09〕, while the reply says, 「一切法畢竟性空,乃至涅槃亦皆如化」 tr. “All dharmas are ultimately empty in nature; even nirvāṇa is like a conjured phenomenon”〔0416a12〕. | The root treatise takes its short expression from the question. The direction of the answer in the received text must also be preserved. |
| Twenty-seven | 「《維摩》說佛身離五非常」 tr. “The Vimalakīrti says that the Buddha’s body is free from the five forms of impermanence”〔T33 0813a19〕. | The Weimojie Suoshuo Jing first says, 「是身無常、無強、無力、無堅、速朽之法,不可信也!」 tr. “This body is impermanent, without strength, without power, without solidity, and quickly decays; it cannot be relied upon”〔T14 0539b13〕, and later turns to the exhortation 「佛身者即法身也!」 tr. “The Buddha’s body is precisely the Dharma-body”〔0539c01〕. | “Free from the five forms of impermanence” is a synthetic reading of these two moments rather than a continuous sentence in the received scripture. |
tr. “Knowing that beings delight in lesser Dharmas and fear great wisdom, bodhisattvas therefore appear as śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas”〔T33 0813b02〕. | The Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma reads, 「知眾樂小法,而畏於大智,是故諸菩薩,作聲聞緣覺」 tr. “Knowing that beings delight in lesser Dharmas and fear great wisdom, bodhisattvas therefore appear as śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas”〔T09 0028a11〕. | The graphs agree; the punctuation differs between the two texts. |
tr. “The eldest son in my Dharma is named Mahākāśyapa. Ānanda, the learned one, can sever every doubt and naturally understand what is permanent and what is impermanent”〔T33 0813b03〕. tr. “The eldest son in my Dharma is named Mahākāśyapa. Ānanda diligently exerts himself and can sever every doubt”〔T12 0428a26〕, and 「阿難多聞士,自然當解了,是常及無常。」 tr. “Ānanda, the learned one, will naturally understand what is permanent and what is impermanent”〔0428a28〕. | The root treatise omits and relocates several phrases, with further differences in the verbs and conjunction. |
tr. “The Nirvāṇa Sūtra also brings great benefit, as in the Lotus, where eight thousand śrāvakas receive predictions and bring a great fruit to maturity”〔T33 0813b11〕. | The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra reads, 「如《法花》中,八千聲聞,得受記莂成大果實」 tr. “As in the Lotus, where eight thousand śrāvakas receive predictions and bring a great fruit to maturity”〔T12 0420a23〕. | The two texts use different graphs in the title Lotus and punctuate the line differently. |
tr. “The principle of the Lotus Sūtra is Perfect and its teaching ultimate, lacking nothing”〔T33 0813b14〕. | In the corresponding setting, the Miaofa Lianhua Jing Youpotishe (T1519) reads, 「究竟滿足一切智慧名大涅槃,非諸聲聞、辟支佛等有涅槃法,唯一佛乘故。」 tr. “The ultimate fulfillment of all wisdom is called great nirvāṇa. Śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and the others possess no separate Dharma of nirvāṇa, because there is only the Buddha-Vehicle”〔T26 0007b28〕. | The received text has no sentence identical to the root treatise’s short formulation; the latter summarizes the treatise’s meaning. |
tr. “In the Da Zhidu Lun, Nāgārjuna praises the Lotus as the most profound”〔T33 0813b15〕. | The Da Zhidu Lun asks, 「《法華經》、諸餘方等經,何以囑累喜王諸菩薩等?」 tr. “Why are the Lotus Sūtra and the other Vaipulya scriptures entrusted to the bodhisattva Joyful King and the others?”〔T25 0754b13〕, and answers, 「是時,佛說甚深難信之法,聲聞人不在。」 tr. “At that time the Buddha taught a profound and difficult-to-believe Dharma, and śrāvakas were not present”〔0754b15〕. | The received text calls the Dharma taught “profound and difficult to believe,” while its question includes both the Lotus and other Vaipulya scriptures. The root treatise condenses this into praise of the Lotus. |
| Thirty-three | 「何故餘經皆付阿難,唯《法華》但付菩薩?」 tr. “Why are all the other scriptures entrusted to Ānanda, while only the Lotus is entrusted solely to bodhisattvas?”〔T33 0813b16〕. | In one place the Da Zhidu Lun asks about entrusting the Lotus and other Vaipulya scriptures to bodhisattvas〔T25 0754b13〕; elsewhere it says, 「若佛囑累阿難是般若波羅蜜」 tr. “What the Buddha entrusted to Ānanda was the perfection of wisdom”〔0756a21〕. | The root treatise combines the two places into an exclusive contrast. |
The Common Destination of the Great Vehicle Scriptures and the Present Establishment of Two Repositories
| Item | Wording in the root treatise | Verification in the received text | Relationship |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thirty-four | 「如《華嚴》、《無量義》、《法華》皆三昧名」 tr. “For example, Avataṃsaka, Immeasurable Meanings, and Lotus are all names of samādhis”〔T33 0813b18〕. | The Dafangguang Fo Huayan Jing (T278) has 「華嚴三昧勢力故」 tr. “through the power of the Flower Adornment Samādhi”〔T09 0434c11〕; the Wuliangyi Jing (T276) has 「無量義三昧」 tr. “the Samādhi of Immeasurable Meanings”〔0387a01〕; and the Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma has 「華德菩薩得法華三昧。」 tr. “The bodhisattva Flower Virtue attained the Lotus Samādhi”〔0056b29〕. | Each of the three scriptures contains the corresponding name of a samādhi; they do not form a single list in one scripture. |
| Thirty-five | 「《般若》是大智慧」 tr. “Prajñā is great wisdom”〔T33 0813b19〕. | The title and subject matter of the Mohe Bore Boluomi Jing (T223) provide the corresponding setting. | The root treatise gives an explanation of the name rather than citing a sentence that can be uniquely matched word for word. |
| Thirty-six | The root treatise identifies the Vimalakīrti’s 「不思議解脫」 tr. “inconceivable liberation”〔T33 0813b20〕 as liberation, great nirvāṇa as ultimate cessation, and the awakening about which Mañjuśrī asks as the fulfilled path. | The Weimojie Suoshuo Jing has 「住不思議解脫法門。」 tr. “abiding in the Dharma-gate of inconceivable liberation”〔T14 0546b29〕; the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra has 「究竟畢竟者,一切眾生所得一乘,一乘者名為佛性」 tr. “The ultimately final is the One Vehicle attained by all sentient beings; the One Vehicle is called buddha-nature”〔T12 0524c13〕; and the Wenshushili Wen Puti Jing (T464) has 「所用法得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提,是法皆空但有名字」 tr. “The Dharma by which unsurpassed complete awakening is attained is entirely empty and has only a name”〔T14 0481c25〕. | The three passages provide settings for the meanings. “Liberation,” “ultimate cessation,” and “fulfilled path” are the recorder’s synthetic judgments. |
tr. “The mātṛkā says that of the twelve divisions of scripture, only the Vaipulya division is the Bodhisattva Repository; the eleven divisions are the Śrāvaka Repository”〔T33 0813b26〕. | The wording is close apart from “other.” The mātṛkā is still not retitled as the Pusa Dichi Jing. |
tr. “The Buddha taught the path out of suffering to śrāvakas and bodhisattvas. Those who compiled the scriptures made what was taught for bodhisattvas the Bodhisattva Repository and what was taught for śrāvakas the Śrāvaka Repository”〔T33 0813b27〕. | The root treatise refers only to “those who compiled the scriptures” and names no single scripture or treatise. | This is a summary of the principle of compilation; its specific referent remains under investigation. |
tr. “Mahākāśyapa and Ānanda compiled the Tripiṭaka on Fragrant Mountain as the Śrāvaka Repository, while Mañjuśrī and Ānanda compiled the Great Vehicle scriptures as the Bodhisattva Repository”〔T33 0813c01〕. | The Da Zhidu Lun reads, 「如摩訶迦葉將諸比丘在耆闍崛山中集三藏」 tr. “Mahākāśyapa led the bhikṣus in compiling the Tripiṭaka on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa”〔T25 0756b14〕, and then, 「文殊尸利、彌勒諸大菩薩亦將阿難集是摩訶衍。」 tr. “Mañjuśrī, Maitreya, and the other great bodhisattvas also led Ānanda in compiling this Great Vehicle”〔0756b15〕. | “With Ānanda on Fragrant Mountain” differs from “led the bhikṣus on Mount Gṛdhrakūṭa.” The received account of the Great Vehicle compilation also names Maitreya and other great bodhisattvas. |
tr. “The scriptures in eleven divisions are upheld by those of the Two Vehicles, while the Vaipulya division is upheld by bodhisattvas”〔T33 0813c03〕. | The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra separately says, 「一者二乘所持,二者菩薩所持。」 tr. “First, what is upheld by those of the Two Vehicles; second, what is upheld by bodhisattvas”〔T12 0472a26〕, and 「一者十一部經,二者方等經。」 tr. “First, the scriptures in eleven divisions; second, the Vaipulya scriptures”〔0472b07〕. | The root treatise combines two adjacent pairs into one sentence and correlates the eleven divisions and Vaipulya with the Two Vehicles and bodhisattvas. |
Earlier Reconciliations, Class Names, and Unnamed Sources
| Item | Wording in the root treatise | Verification in the received text | Relationship |
|---|---|---|---|
tr. “The treatise says: ‘Using medicine as medicine is easy; using poison as medicine is difficult,’ and so forth”〔T33 0811c19〕. | In the same setting, the Da Zhidu Lun says only, 「譬如大藥師能以毒為藥。」 tr. “It is like a great physician who can use poison as medicine”〔T25 0754b22〕. | The root treatise adds the balanced contrast between the ease of using medicine and the difficulty of using poison. |
tr. “Prajñā also clarifies the siddhānta of ultimate truth and is therefore the greatest. Of its ninety chapters, the first sixty clarify real wisdom, while from the ‘Inexhaustible’ chapter onward they clarify skillful wisdom”〔T33 0811c07〕. | The Da Zhidu Lun has 「第一義悉檀相故,說是《般若波羅蜜經》。」 tr. “Because it has the character of the siddhānta of ultimate truth, the Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra is taught”〔T25 0059b18〕; the received Mohe Bore Boluomi Jing labels the chapter 「無盡品第六十七」 tr. “‘Inexhaustible,’ Chapter Sixty-Seven”〔T08 0364a28〕. | The siddhānta of ultimate truth can be directly matched, but the root treatise’s division after sixty chapters does not agree with the received chapter number sixty-seven. Its basis remains under investigation. |
| Forty-three | 「經言:為聲聞說四諦,乃至說六度;」 tr. “The scripture says: he taught the Four Truths for śrāvakas, and so on through his teaching of the six perfections”〔T33 0813a01〕. | The Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma says in the same setting, 「為求聲聞者,說應四諦法」 tr. “for those seeking to be śrāvakas, he taught the Dharma corresponding to the Four Truths”〔T09 0050c03〕, 「為求辟支佛者,說應十二因緣法」 tr. “for those seeking to be pratyekabuddhas, he taught the Dharma corresponding to the twelve links of dependent arising”〔0050c05〕, and 「為諸菩薩,因阿耨多羅三藐三菩提,說應六波羅蜜法」 tr. “for the bodhisattvas, for the sake of unsurpassed complete awakening, he taught the Dharma corresponding to the six perfections”〔0050c05〕. | “Through” in the root treatise includes the intervening teaching of dependent arising. The original scene concerns the ancient Buddha Awesome-Sound-King. |
tr. “The four Āgamas and the five Vinayas were taught for śrāvakas and continued until the Sage’s passing; this is precisely an example”〔T33 0813a03〕. | “The four Āgamas” and “the five Vinayas” are classes comprising several works. The root treatise next names the Zengyi Ahan Jing and the Chang Ahan Jing as specific examples. | This is not a citation of one owning scripture, and no single work is made to represent the whole class. |
| Forty-five | 「涅槃佛性亦名般若,亦名一乘,一乘是《法華》之宗,《般若》是大品所說,即是明性」 tr. “The buddha-nature taught in the Nirvāṇa is also called Prajñā and also called the One Vehicle. The One Vehicle is the purport of the Lotus, and Prajñā is what the Larger Prajñā teaches; this is precisely to clarify nature”〔T33 0813a14〕. | The Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra says, 「一乘者名為佛性」 tr. “The One Vehicle is called buddha-nature”〔T12 0524c14〕 and elsewhere lists the perfection of wisdom and buddha-nature among five names for the Śūraṅgama Samādhi〔0524c23〕; the Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma says, 「十方佛土中,唯有一乘法」 tr. “Within the buddha-lands of the ten directions, there is only the Dharma of the One Vehicle”〔T09 0008a17〕. | The root treatise correlates meanings from several locations; it is not one sentence shared by three scriptures. |
| Forty-six | 「又若從法華後入涅槃者,《法華經》中已明王宮非始,久來成道」 tr. “Further, if one enters the Nirvāṇa after the Lotus, the Lotus Sūtra has already clarified that the royal palace was not the beginning and that the Buddha attained the Way long ago”〔T33 0813b07〕. | The Sutra of the Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma first reports the worldly view that the present Buddha 「出釋氏宮」 tr. “left the Śākya palace”〔T09 0042b10〕 and recently attained awakening, then immediately says, 「我實成佛已來無量無邊百千萬億那由他劫。」 tr. “In reality, since I attained buddhahood, immeasurable and boundless hundreds of thousands of myriads of koṭis of nayutas of kalpas have passed”〔0042b12〕. | “The royal palace was not the beginning; he attained the Way long ago” summarizes the relationship between these two statements. |
| Forty-seven | 「若爾,誕公云:雙樹已前,指《法華經》悉不了,豈非誣誷也?」 tr. “If so, when Master Dan says that everything before the twin trees—including the Lotus Sūtra—was incomplete, is that not a false accusation?”〔T33 0813b24〕. | The root treatise names Master Dan but not his work. | The specific source remains under investigation and is not supplied from familiarity with the name alone. |
tr. “Within the Bodhisattva Repository are those capable of sudden awakening, such as the beings addressed by the Avataṃsaka and other scriptures. They do not come through the lesser teaching but enter the Great Vehicle straightaway, and are therefore called sudden”〔T33 0813c15〕. | The Avataṃsaka and other scriptures are examples of the class of persons addressed; the statement does not identify a particular passage in the Dafangguang Fo Huayan Jing. | The specific scriptural location remains under investigation, and the samādhi passage above is not substituted for it. |
| Forty-nine | 「復次,舍利弗在佛涅槃前七日滅度,大目連為執杖外道所打,亦在佛前涅槃」 tr. “Moreover, Śāriputra passed into extinction seven days before the Buddha’s nirvāṇa, and Mahāmaudgalyāyana, beaten by staff-bearing non-Buddhist practitioners, likewise entered nirvāṇa before the Buddha”〔T33 0813a26〕. | The Genben Shuoyiqie Youbu Pinaiye Zashi (T1451) has the corresponding scene, 「執杖外道共打聖者大目乾連」 tr. “Staff-bearing non-Buddhist practitioners together beat the noble Mahāmaudgalyāyana”〔T24 0287c19〕. The statement about Śāriputra’s seven days has not been uniquely located in the materials examined here. | Mahāmaudgalyāyana’s story has a direct witness; Śāriputra’s seven-day interval remains under investigation. The two claims are not assigned to one source. |
4. Essential Explanations from the Shiqian [the Mirror]
The Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian gives the first key to the entire chapter by establishing its level of authorship: this is Zhang’an’s miscellaneous record, not the main body of the Great Master’s teaching. Its arrangement 「故不依文次,亦無深淺」 tr. “therefore does not follow the textual sequence and has no ordering by depth or shallowness”〔T33 0962a05〕 means that the divergent reports were not arranged according to the order or relative depth of the preceding text; it does not deny that each of the four gateways contains an argument.
The first gateway, concerning Prajñā and the Lotus, is illuminated as three statements in one treatise: one seems to make Prajñā superior, one seems to make the Lotus superior, and one seems to make the two scriptures equal〔0962a12–a14〕. An earlier reconciliation magnifies Prajñā through real and skillful wisdom but still does not resolve the contradiction among the three statements. Zhang’an introduces common and uncommon Prajñā; Zhanran then explains, 「不共般若攝一切法,何妨法華亦入其中。」 tr. “Uncommon Prajñā encompasses all dharmas, so what prevents the Lotus from also entering within it?”〔0962b01〕. In treating secrecy, he further distinguishes concealed secrecy from wondrous profundity through 「密祕,語同意別」 tr. “mì and mì: the expressions sound the same, but their meanings differ”〔0962b14〕, preventing a shared graph from being mistaken for a single meaning.
The gateway of the repositories moves from two through eight, with the general intent that 「皆以一期佛教通之」 tr. “all are correlated through the Buddha’s teaching of one lifetime”〔0962c11〕. The four repositories correspond one by one to the Four Teachings; they are not four repositories mutually containing one another. The correlation of the eight repositories is only provisional, and 「不論法華者,以法華部非八數故」 tr. “the Lotus is not discussed because the Lotus division is not among the eight”〔0962c25〕. Different numbers of repositories therefore need not be reduced to a single set of identical labels, and correlation does not cancel the basis of each classification.
In the gateway concerning the basis of the Four Teachings, the Shiqian limits the four great teaching-principles of the Chang Ahan to a shared number: 「但同有四,非即藏等」 tr. “They merely share the number four; they are not themselves the Tripiṭaka and the others”〔0963a04〕. Zhang’an actually correlates meanings from the four kinds of sūtra in the Moon-Lamp Samādhi Sūtra: conditioned activities, censure, afflictions, and purity. Zhanran further counts seventy-seven groups of four in that scripture〔0963a15〕. The Four Houses passage 「借高位念念具法,以成初心具法之意」 tr. “borrows the moment-by-moment possession of Dharmas at a high stage in order to establish the meaning that the beginner’s mind possesses the Dharmas”〔0963a29〕. The Shidi Jing Lun retains the original names and order of the Four Houses, while Zhang’an draws on their complete possession at a high stage to correlate them with the Four Teachings.
The refutation of ancient classifications unfolds in three levels: presentation of the ancient views, refutation of them, and the present establishment〔0963b02〕. The ancient views are sudden and gradual, complete and incomplete, and the single voice. The refutation first rejects fixed sudden and gradual periods while still affirming that, according to the persons addressed, there can be sudden reception and gradual entry. In the refutation of the fifth period, the Shiqian further distinguishes three layers: three scriptures with different names and one substance, agreement in meaning with difference in expression, and proof through the persons involved〔0963b18〕. The text is therefore not making the undifferentiated claim that all three scriptures are simply identical.
The present establishment of two repositories has five steps〔0963c02–c03〕: citing texts to establish the repositories; dividing persons in relation to the repositories; distinguishing subsidiary from primary participants to clarify the reason for establishing the repositories; resolving a difficulty through question and answer; and opening the repositories into the teachings. Scriptural and treatise support for the Śrāvaka and Bodhisattva Repositories comes first, followed by the two kinds of persons addressed in each. The teaching is then named according to its primary audience, and only at the end are the two repositories opened into the Four Teachings.
The final passage beginning with the observation that the wording is brief is the recorder’s reference back to the Master. It divides into the recorder’s need to speak at length, his report of the Master’s intent, and the conclusion of the preceding that gives rise to the following. The Master’s words first express modesty and then encouragement, followed by teaching, contemplation, and conclusion〔0963c12〕. The “seven meanings” are used to comprehend the ten subtleties through the shared explanation and are then examined within the separate explanation; “perfect penetration” concludes the teaching and “universal illumination” concludes contemplation〔0963c15–c20〕.
5. Explanations of Various Masters
Zhixu’s Fahua Jing Xuanyi Jieyao (X0589) directly excerpts the latter half of this unit, beginning, 「記者私錄云:人言第二時十二年中說三乘別教」 tr. “The recorder’s private record says: ‘People say that in the second period, during twelve years, the Buddha taught the separate teachings of the Three Vehicles’”〔X 0541c09〕, and ending with the recorder’s simile of nets and traps. It does not include the first three gateways or the final words of the Master. Its wording also has such variants as “destination/purport,” “each has a name/each differs in itself,” and two graphic variants in the hunting simile. These serve as witnesses to a later excerpted edition and do not retroactively prove that T1716 lacked any text.
tr. “This is another person’s theory of the five periods. That theory forms the five only by opening them within the gradual teaching, including the teaching with characteristics during the twelve years and so forth, as in Fascicle Ten of the Xuanyi”〔X 0295c01〕. This shows that later Tiantai scholarship recognized the passage as another person’s theory; it is not a line-by-line commentary on the unit.
Zhiyuan’s Niepan Jing Shu Sande Zhigui (X0662) speaks in one place of the human-and-heaven teaching to Trapuṣa followed by the Tripiṭaka teaching to the five men〔X 0385b19〕, and in another of an ancient classification that treats the first twelve years as teaching with characteristics, then teaches no characteristics, and finally clarifies permanence〔0453a12〕. Both passages directly correspond to the setting refuted in this unit and serve as an Off-Mountain comparison; they do not become a line-by-line gloss of the unit.
Zhiquan’s extant Fahua Jing Xuanqian Zhengshi (X0592) ends before the Shiqian reaches the beginning of this unit. Its closing passage is still explaining 「般若付財尚無悕取」 tr. “in Prajñā, after being entrusted with the wealth, they still had no desire to take it”〔T33 0961c27〕, glossing it with 「○般若付財文句云:般若是委業」 tr. “Regarding Prajñā and entrusting the wealth, the Wenju says Prajñā is entrusting the work”〔X 0632c01〕, and then the work closes. Within the limits of the extant text it therefore offers no direct verification of this unit. Its note that the Trapuṣa-Bhallika scripture was “now absent from the canon” provides only indirect evidence concerning transmission.
6. Terminology
The recorder’s private record of agreements and differences. Guanding expressly identifies this passage as his private record, and the Shiqian classifies it as Zhang’an’s miscellaneous record of divergent reports. “Private” marks the level of authorship; it does not mean an esoteric oral transmission.
Common Prajñā and uncommon Prajñā. This distinction reconciles the tension between the inclusion of the Lotus within Prajñā and the Lotus’s own disclosure of wondrous profundity. Here it functions as a method of reconciliation and does not establish a separate, complete chronology of scriptures.
Concealed secrecy and wondrous profundity. The same graph for “secret” can refer either to something concealed from those not yet ready to know it or to a wondrous and profound meaning. The setting determines which sense applies.
From two through eight repositories. Different numbers of repositories occur in different scriptures and treatises. Zhang’an provisionally correlates them through the Buddha’s teaching of one lifetime and expressly limits the correlation by saying that the Buddha’s intent is difficult to fathom. The provisional mapping is not asserted as the only fixed table.
The four great teaching-principles. These are the four sources of report and verification in the Chang Ahan Jing. They share the number four but are not the same in substance as the Four Teachings discussed later in the unit.
The four kinds of sūtra. Conditioned activities, censure, afflictions, and purity. Zhang’an first correlates them separately with the Four Teachings and then opens the Four Truths within each teaching. The fuller titles in the received Moon-Lamp Samādhi Sūtra and the abbreviated forms in the root treatise are each retained in their own textual layer.
The Four Houses. The Shidi Jing Lun lists the House of Prajñā, the House of Truth, the House of Relinquishing Afflictions, and the House of Purifying Suffering. Zhang’an begins his interpretation with the House of Purifying Suffering. The sequence in the citation and the sequence in the correlation are not interchangeable.
Sudden and gradual. The passage does not deny that some beings receive the teaching suddenly and others enter gradually. It refutes fixing sudden and gradual to closed chronological periods and then ranking depth according to temporal sequence.
Responsive participants. These are sages who assist the Buddha’s transformation like a shadow following a form and an echo answering a sound. They manifest as great within a Great Vehicle teaching and as lesser within a lesser teaching; their attendance at a particular assembly cannot by itself establish what they have understood.
Four kinds of persons within the two repositories. The Śrāvaka Repository includes determinate śrāvakas and śrāvakas who have lost the aspiration for awakening; the Bodhisattva Repository includes great beings of sudden awakening and bodhisattvas who enter gradually. These are two kinds of persons addressed within each repository, not four independent repositories.
Determining the Dharma according to the persons addressed. A scripture is assigned to a repository according to the persons it principally addresses. Although another kind of participant may be present responsively in the assembly, that presence does not change the name of the principal teaching.
The seven meanings, the ten subtleties, and examining the seven within the separate explanation. The Master’s words instruct the reader first to seek the sevenfold shared explanation, use those seven meanings to comprehend the ten subtleties, and then examine them within the separate explanation so that each chapter possesses the seven. This passage gives an order of reading; it does not supply another numerical table.
7. Similes · Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward
The first gateway concerning Prajñā and the Lotus uses the ocean and space in succession: streams entering the sea represent sages converging with the absence of marks, while empty space embracing everything represents guiding beings with the absence of marks as the purport. An earlier reconciliation then uses medicine and poison to distinguish ease and difficulty. Zhang’an replies with the image of leaning on a dead stump: if the explanation relied upon is itself unsteady, the person and the dead wood fall together.
The gateway concerning the basis of the Four Teachings uses entering the great ocean and obtaining a jewel to express the relation between afflictions and wisdom. It then repeatedly unfolds the Four Houses and the Four Truths. The ocean and the jewel illuminate the relation between afflictions and wisdom; the Four Houses and Four Truths each unfold in the sequence given by the root treatise.
The central cross-reading in the refutation of ancient classifications does not rest on the chronological order of scripture titles. It asks instead whether people who need a certain teaching after the assigned deadline would still receive it, how emptiness, permanence, the One Vehicle, and buddha-nature are disclosed across the same scriptures and treatises, and how the responsive roles of Ānanda, Kāśyapa, Śāriputra, and others make a fixed sequence of assemblies untenable. The text first refutes chronological confinement and then gathers the scriptures under two repositories according to their principal audiences.
The simile of nets and traps at the end turns from brevity to elaboration: when there is much to catch in rivers and marshes, many implements must be tied; this is not because fishers and hunters love prolixity. The Master’s words then conclude with the Five Chapters linked like embroidery and with digging through the dry earth of ordinary beings to see the wet clay of the Dharma of sages. The first image shows how the teachings interlock with a discernible pattern; the second turns the Profound Meaning toward contemplative practice.
This unit carries the entire treatise forward precisely through its final statement. The Five Chapters, seven meanings, ten subtleties, and separate explanation have already been supplied; only then does the text turn to interpretation of the scripture. The recorder’s private record is not a miscellaneous conversation appended to the fascicle. It places competing classifications back within their scriptural and treatise evidence, their intended audiences, and the conditions of compilation, bringing the whole Profound Meaning to a final reconciliation and close.
8. Placement of the Editions
First, this unit uses T1716 as its base text. Its main text begins at 0811b28 and ends at 0814a18; the colophon 「妙法蓮華經玄義卷第十下」 tr. “Fahua Xuanyi, Fascicle Ten, Part Two”〔0814a19〕 stands outside the main text.
Second, the present T1716 file has seventeen apparatus groups in its back matter. Each has been reattached to its target anchor in the main text; none of those textual variants falls within the closed span of this unit. This conclusion is limited to the apparatus of the present Taishō file and does not extend to later excerpts. Graphic differences in X0589 are separately recorded under the explanations of various masters.
Third, the unit’s citations include verbatim agreement, excerpting, paraphrase, synthesis across passages, and unidentified referents. Every page-line anchor is taken from the nearest line marker preceding the first graph of the quoted string. When a shorter quotation begins later on the same line, its anchor is located anew from its own first graph.
Fourth, the corresponding commentary in the Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian begins at 0962a04 and ends at 0963c20; 0963c21 is already the fascicle-end colophon. The closing byline of the prefatory “Account of the Circumstances of the Shiqian” belongs to Pumenzi〔0815a05〕, while the main text, after its own fascicle title, is attributed to Zhanran〔0815b04〕. These levels are not conflated.
Fifth, Dharmottara’s Meaning of the Traces of the Teaching, the numbers cited from the Five Precepts Sūtra, the source for opening a Buddha Repository as a fourth repository, “those who compiled the scriptures,” Master Dan’s original work, and the account of Śāriputra’s seven-day interval all remain under investigation because the extant materials do not uniquely identify them. No source is invented from a similar title, a similar meaning, or a later summary.
