If everything can mutually embrace everything else, are boundaries still needed? The more things can mutually embrace, the more necessary it becomes to know from which perspective one is speaking.
The flower represents the provisional, but not every provisional must be broken in the same way. When a skillful means for transforming others is grasped as ultimate, like remaining in the grass hut, its obstruction must be broken. The provisional within one’s own practice still opens for the sake of the real. Taking both cause and fruit as the purport likewise does not establish two purports: cause accomplishes fruit, and fruit is accomplished through cause; they are one mutually fulfilling path.
Purport and function can both speak of provisional and real, wisdom and severance, self and other, yet their boundary does not lie in their words. The purport asks through what cause and fruit one’s own practice reaches the Buddha-fruit. Function asks which Dharma can benefit another person now. Even if a skillful means for transforming others cannot reach the ultimate in one step, it has effective power when it properly fits that person’s faculties.
The heart of resolving questions is not to be deceived by identical wording or to sever relationships through distinction. The five meanings obtain what is shared because they can read all scriptures in common; each scripture retains its own answer and therefore does not lose what is separate. Communication with boundaries does not confuse; distinction with communication does not fragment.

The fifth pass uses a succession of questions and answers to clarify the boundaries among the five chapters.
Someone asks: If the flower opens for the sake of the lotus fruit and flower and fruit are necessarily present together, does this not fall into the view that “the fruit already exists within the cause”? The answer is that the fruit’s original presence within the cause is the false Dharma represented by the old physician and was already broken by the initial teaching. It does not even reach the comparatively coarse meaning of provisional and real, much less the wondrous cause, wondrous fruit, and true milk of the new physician.
Another asks: The flower represents the provisional, and the provisional is a Dharma of the Lesser Vehicle that ought to be broken like the grass hut. Since the grass hut is broken, why is the flower still used to represent the provisional? The answer is that the Lesser Vehicle is a provisional means established for transforming others, and attachment to it must therefore be broken. What is discussed here is the provisional practiced in the practitioner’s own practice, and so the flower can still represent it.
Another asks: The scripture has seven similes from the burning house through the physician and his children, none of which explicitly speaks of the lotus. Why then is the lotus alone selected for the scripture’s title? The answer is that the seven similes each separately reveal a meaning and are therefore particular; the lotus generally embraces provisional and real and is therefore general. Raising the general simile embraces the seven particular similes, and the lotus is therefore placed at the head of the title.
Another asks: If all Dharmas are Buddha-Dharma, why exclude the provisional and take the real as the scripture’s substance? The answer is that viewed from opening the provisional to reveal the real, all Dharmas can become the substance. Viewed from relinquishing the provisional to reveal the real, the true mark adopted in the preceding passage is taken as the substance.
Another asks: Why take both cause and fruit as the purport? The answer is that only through cause can fruit be reached, while fruit is what the cause accomplishes. Viewed from what is able to accomplish, the cause is taken as the purport. Viewed from what is accomplished, the fruit is taken as the purport. The two meanings originally accomplish one another and one side cannot be taken alone. Moreover, the Trace and Origin sections of the scripture both teach cause and fruit, and both must therefore be taken as the purport.
Another asks: In discussing the purport, the cause and fruit used to transform others are excluded. Why, when discussing function, are the provisional and real of both one’s own practice and transforming others included? The answer is that the purport discusses the practitioner’s own practice and therefore excludes the other; function discusses benefiting others and therefore takes both self and other.
The question continues: Since function concerns transforming others, why does it also take the provisional and real of one’s own practice? The answer is that these are first used to benefit oneself and are also used to benefit others.
The interlocutor then turns the argument around: On this account, the purport should likewise include the cause and fruit of both one’s own practice and transforming others, and should therefore take the transformation of others. The answer is that the cause and fruit used to transform others cannot bring the practitioner to the Buddha’s awakening, and so they are not taken as the purport.
The interlocutor again turns the argument around: The provisional and real used to transform others likewise cannot directly bring others to the ultimate, so it would seem that they should not be taken as function either. The answer is that the other person’s faculties at that time require precisely this benefit, and it must therefore still be taken as function. Effective power is judged by whether it accords with the person and enables that person to benefit, not only by whether it reaches the ultimate in one step.
Another asks: The purport and function both speak of the virtue of wisdom and virtue of severance. How are they to be distinguished? The answer is that if one speaks only in terms of one’s own practice, the virtue of wisdom is the purport and the virtue of severance is function. If one also considers transforming others, both wisdom and severance in one’s own practice belong to the purport, while both wisdom and severance in transforming others belong to function. The same terms retain clear boundaries because their assignments differ.
Another asks: Why establish exactly five chapters rather than four or six? The answer is that even if four or six were established instead, people could continue asking why some other number was not used. This would fall into questioning without end, and such a question cannot reach the real meaning revealed by the five chapters.
Finally someone asks: Every scripture has a different intent. How can the same five meanings be used to explain all the scriptures in common? The answer is that if each scripture received only a separate explanation, one could obtain only differences and would not see their shared relationships. By discussing the five meanings explaining the name, discerning the substance, clarifying the purport, discussing the function, and classifying the teaching in common, one obtains a shared way of reading without losing the individual differences of each scripture.
Opening and Combining says that the five chapters can mutually embrace one another. Resolving Questions immediately presses on the places most likely to be confused. If the lotus has flower and fruit at the same time, does that mean the fruit already exists within the cause? If the provisional has been broken, why can the flower still represent it? If purport and function both speak of cause and fruit, provisional and real, and wisdom and severance, how do they avoid collapsing into a single chapter?
These questions do not dismantle what preceded them. They test whether it can withstand counterargument.
What Must First Be Excluded from the Lotus’s Provisional and Real?
Flower and fruit being simultaneous means only that wondrous cause and wondrous fruit correspond; it does not mean the fruit lies hidden in fixed form within the cause. If simultaneity is mistaken for preexistence, the lotus simile falls back into the false cause and fruit already broken. A simile can reveal a relationship; it cannot congeal that relationship into an entity.
The flower represents the provisional, but this does not mean every provisional must be broken in the same way. When the provisional Lesser Vehicle for transforming others is grasped as ultimate, like someone remaining in a grass hut, attachment to it must be broken. The provisional of one’s own practice guides the practitioner toward the real from within the practitioner’s substance and can still be revealed by the flower. The name is the same, but its assignment differs, and so does the judgment.
The seven particular similes do not each mention the lotus precisely because the lotus is the general simile. The burning house, poor son, medicinal herbs, conjured city, jewel tied in the garment, jewel on the crown, and physician and children each reveal one aspect. The lotus generally embraces all those aspects through provisional and real. The general is not an eighth particular simile; it is the headrope that allows the seven to be gathered together.
If the Substance Pervades All Dharmas, Why Exclude the Provisional and Take the Real?
To say that all Dharmas are Buddha-Dharma is to view them after the provisional has been opened and revealed. To say that the provisional is excluded and the real is taken as substance is to view them from no longer grasping the provisional as ultimate. The same provisional Dharma occupies a different place when it is being established, when it is opened and revealed, and when attachment to it is relinquished. If those three relationships are not distinguished and one clings only to “all are substance” or “this is not substance,” the question and answer cannot stand.
The substance’s pervading all Dharmas does not make every attachment the correct substance. Excluding attachment does not mean that the earlier skillful means never had a guiding function. The work of resolving questions is to let pervasion and exclusion stand together.
Why Take Cause and Fruit Together, and How Are Purport and Function Then Separated?
Cause can accomplish fruit, and fruit is accomplished through cause. If only cause is taken, its destination is unclear; if only fruit is taken, the way to it has no basis. The purport therefore takes both the cause and fruit of one’s own practice, not as two parallel purports but as one mutually accomplishing path.
Function does not ask what is most honored and essential, but which Dharma can benefit the faculties present. Even if a Dharma used to transform others cannot bring someone to the ultimate in one step, it still has effective power if it properly accords with that person’s needs. The purport asks how one’s own practice reaches the Buddha-fruit and therefore does not take the cause and fruit for transforming others when they cannot accomplish that fruit. Purport and function can both discuss wisdom and severance; their boundary lies in one’s own practice and transforming others, what is honored and what benefits, not in whether their surface vocabulary repeats.
The final two questions push the inquiry back onto the five chapters themselves. If four or six chapters were established instead, their number could still be questioned endlessly. The real answer is not a preference for a number but whether the five questions can read a scripture completely. The five meanings can be asked in common of all scriptures while their answers remain distinct. A shared approach does not flatten the differences among scriptures, and their differences do not abolish the shared approach.
Through the Eye of the Shiqian
Zhanran reads the first three sections together as distinguishing the name, then distinguishes substance and purport, connects the counterarguments on purport and function into one chain, and finally distinguishes the five chapters as a whole. This analysis keeps “another question” and the arguments turned back upon the respondent from being mistakenly divided into extra groups.
The mirror uses the fact that cause and fruit share their names but differ in timing and teaching to break the first doubt. It preserves the flower simile through the provisional of one’s own practice within the substance and gathers the seven particular similes into the general lotus meaning. The five groups on purport and function are judged together as properly distinguishing function while also revealing the purport. The final statement “obtaining what is shared without losing what is separate” answers precisely how the five meanings can explain in common without flattening differences.
Read through this analysis, the series of questions and answers is not a collection of scattered debates. Beginning with the simile in the title, it tests layer by layer the entire system of five chapters, preserving throughout both difference within what is shared and communication within what is distinct.
考據Apparatus

The pass Resolving Questions tests the five chapters through twelve groups of questions and answers. The first three distinguish the name, the fourth the substance, the fifth the purport, the sixth through tenth distinguish purport and function in relation to one another, and the final two distinguish the five chapters as a whole. The rapid questions and answers treat in sequence the boundaries of the lotus as a representation of provisional and real, cause and fruit as the purport, one’s own practice and transforming others, and the five chapters’ shared explanation of all scriptures.
1. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
This pass begins with 「五料簡者」 tr. “Fifth, as for resolving questions”〔T33 0685b07〕 and ends with 「今共論五義,得同不失別」 tr. “Now, by discussing the five meanings in common, one obtains what is shared without losing what is separate”〔0685c05〕. The next line, 「六明觀心者」 tr. “Sixth, as for clarifying contemplation of the mind”〔0685c07〕, has already entered the sixth pass.
The Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian (T1717) explicitly judges 「次料簡中合十二重問答」 tr. “Next, Resolving Questions contains twelve levels of question and answer in all”〔T33 0828b06〕. It divides them into three questions distinguishing the name, one distinguishing the substance, one distinguishing the purport, five comparing and distinguishing purport and function, and two distinguishing the five chapters as a whole. “Another question” and “turning the argument around” in the body text mark turns within the same chain of argument. The number of groups follows the commentary’s analysis and cannot be increased mechanically merely by counting question marks or words introducing questions and answers.
The twelve groups occur in the following sequence:
| Group | Domain | Focus of the question | Opening anchor |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Name | Whether the lotus flower and fruit being simultaneous falls into fruit already existing within cause | 0685b07 |
| 2 | Name | How the provisional of the Lesser Vehicle differs from the provisional of one’s own practice; since the grass hut is broken, why the flower still represents the provisional | 0685b10 |
| 3 | Name | Since the seven particular similes do not mention the lotus, why the lotus heads the title | 0685b13 |
| 4 | Substance | If all Dharmas are Buddha-Dharma, why exclude the provisional and take the real as substance | 0685b16 |
| 5 | Purport | Why cause and fruit are both taken as the purport | 0685b18 |
| 6 | Purport and function | The purport excludes cause and fruit used to transform others; why function includes the provisional and real of both self and other | 0685b21 |
| 7 | Purport and function | Since function transforms others, why it still takes the provisional and real of one’s own practice | 0685b23 |
| 8 | Purport and function | Turning the argument around, whether the purport should also take the cause and fruit used to transform others | 0685b25 |
| 9 | Purport and function | Turning the argument around, since the provisional and real for transforming others cannot reach the ultimate, whether they should not be taken as function | 0685b27 |
| 10 | Purport and function | How purport and function are distinguished when both clarify wisdom and severance | 0685b28 |
| 11 | Five chapters | Why five are established rather than four or six | 0685c02 |
| 12 | Five chapters | Since the separate intents of the scriptures differ, how the five meanings can explain them in common | 0685c03 |
2. Formation and Transmission
The origins recorded in this treatise state that Zhiyi taught the Profound Meaning at Jiangling and Guanding heard and transcribed it, and explicitly note that the Profound Meaning and Words and Phrases each comprised ten fascicles〔T33 0681a16–a23〕. No marker shifts the layer in this pass, and the Shiqian does not judge any passage to be Zhang’an’s private explanation. The whole is therefore treated as Zhiyi’s oral teaching recorded by Guanding.
The body text does not number the twelve groups. The present twelvefold division follows the Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian’s explicit analytic judgment. This is the commentator’s division of the question-and-answer chain, not twelve headings originally carried by T1716. Each group nevertheless remains continuously formed from its original question and answer.
3. Scriptures and Treatises Cited by Zhiyi
This pass refers back to internal Lotus scenes concerning the title’s lotus meaning, the grass hut, the seven similes, cause and fruit in Trace and Origin, and provisional and real. A complete paragraph-by-paragraph inventory of the questions and answers found no newly named verbatim quotation from a scripture or treatise. The complete results are as follows:
| Scene | Character | Verified treatment |
|---|---|---|
| The new and old physicians, true milk, and false Dharma〔T33 0685b08–b10〕 | The treatise uses the physician simile to distinguish false and correct cause and fruit | Zhiquan points to the scene in the Lamentation chapter of the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra, but the present pass does not quote the root scripture verbatim; no verbal match is retroactively asserted |
| The grass hut and the provisional of the Lesser Vehicle used for transforming others〔T33 0685b10–b13〕 | Refers back to the Lotus teaching of skillful means and provisional and real | Do not present the language of the question and answer as a root-scripture quotation |
| The seven similes from the burning house through the physician and his children〔T33 0685b13–b15〕 | Relationship between seven particular similes and the general lotus simile | Returning each simile individually to the scripture would require a separate scene table; this pass does not quote the scriptures for each simile |
| Opening the provisional to reveal the real, and relinquishing the provisional to reveal the real〔T33 0685b16–b18〕 | Carries forward the meaning of substance and subjects it to questioning | This is the treatise’s analysis of the meaning; do not force a separate scriptural sentence upon it |
| Cause and fruit in the two passages Trace and Origin〔T33 0685b20〕 | Both internal sections of the Lotus speak of cause and fruit | A structural reference, not a verbatim external citation |
The conclusion that this pass has no new named quotation rests on a positive inventory of the complete scenes, not on the failure of a single keyword search. Later commentary indicates the scriptural background for the new and old physicians, but this can only serve as a later ancient commentator’s lead for identifying the source.
4. Essential Explanations from the Shiqian [the Mirror]
The first three groups distinguish the name. The Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian uses 「因果名同,時異教異」 tr. “Cause and fruit have the same names, but their timing and teaching differ”〔T33 0828b11〕 to distinguish the simultaneity of lotus flower and fruit from the false attachment that fruit already exists within cause. For the second group it clarifies 「自行即是體內之權故以華喻」 tr. “The provisional of one’s own practice is precisely the provisional within the substance and is therefore represented by the flower”〔0828b19〕, distinguishing the provisional Lesser Vehicle used to transform others, whose attachment must be broken, from the provisional of one’s own practice that the flower can represent. For the third group it lists the seven similes burning house, poor son, medicinal herbs, conjured city, jewel tied in the garment, jewel on the crown, and physician and children〔0828b22〕, explaining that all the particular similes can be embraced within the general lotus meaning of provisional and real.
The fourth group distinguishes the substance, answering whether provisional Dharmas are all substance through the three conditions establishing, opening, and relinquishing. The Shiqian says 「若為實施權未識經體,開權顯實實如所問」 tr. “When the provisional is established for the sake of the real, the scripture’s substance is not yet recognized; when the provisional is opened to reveal the real, the reality is as the question states”〔0828c09〕. The fifth group distinguishes the purport: although cause and fruit are two, they accomplish one another, and neither cause alone nor fruit alone can independently establish the purport〔0828c15〕.
The sixth through tenth groups must be read together as the comparison and distinction of purport and function. The Shiqian gives the overall judgment 「正為簡用兼為顯宗」 tr. “Properly speaking, they distinguish function while also revealing the purport”〔0828c24〕. The purport emphasizes the honored and essential cause and fruit of one’s own practice; function emphasizes what can benefit others. Even when both speak of wisdom and severance, their assignments distinguish them. What is called function within the purport is not thereby confused with the scripture’s effective power〔0829a17〕.
The final two groups distinguish the five chapters as a whole. Four, five, and six can all be questioned in turn; if the answer concerns only number, the questions continue without end. What matters is whether the five meanings are sufficient to reveal one scripture in common. Although the scriptures each have their separate intent, the same five questions can be asked of all. The Shiqian therefore closes with 「得同不失別」 tr. “obtaining what is shared without losing what is separate”〔0829a27〕.
5. Explanations of Various Masters
Zhiquan’s Fahua Jing Xuanqian Zhengshi (X0592) enters this pass directly with 「五料簡」 tr. “Fifth, Resolving Questions”〔X 0567a04〕 and says 「新舊二醫。 “The new and old physicians come from the Lamentation chapter of the Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra”〔X 0567a04〕. This statement can locate the allusive background of the first question, but it is not a verbatim verification against the root scripture and is therefore recorded only as the ancient commentary’s identification.
Zhixu’s Fahua Jing Xuanyi Jieyao (X0589) preserves the entrance and main sequence of the questions and answers with 「五料簡者」 tr. “Fifth, as for Resolving Questions”〔X 0510c14〕. It is a later witness through selected passages.
Within the limited range of Zhiyuan’s works examined, no continuous explanation was found that directly follows this pass’s twelve-group sequence. Only a neighboring framework for the Fivefold Profound Meaning was found. The absence of a direct scene is recorded truthfully; an item is not fabricated merely to fill the section on differing explanations.
6. Terminology
Resolving questions. Through questions and answers, this distinguishes similar meanings and the boundaries of their assignment. It does not add a new chapter but tests whether the preceding five chapters and their opening and combining are coherent.
General simile and particular similes. The lotus is the general simile for the relationship between provisional and real. The seven similes from the burning house through the physician and his children each reveal one aspect and are particular similes. The general can embrace the particular without implying that the lotus appears verbatim in every one of the seven.
The provisional of one’s own practice and the provisional for transforming others. The second group uses this distinction to separate the provisional Lesser Vehicle for transforming others, represented by the grass hut and requiring the breaking of attachment, from the provisional within the practitioner’s own substance, which the flower can reveal. Both are called provisional but belong to different levels.
Purport and function. The purport takes the cause and fruit of one’s own practice as what is honored and essential. Function takes benefiting others as effective power. Both can involve wisdom and severance, self and other, and provisional and real. They must be judged through assignment and operation, not through the surface recurrence of the same terms.
Obtaining what is shared without losing what is separate. The five meanings can be asked in common of all scriptures and thereby obtain what is shared; each scripture answers differently and thereby does not lose what is separate. “Shared explanation” does not mean declaring the contents of all scriptures identical.
7. Similes · Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward
The first group’s simile of the new and old physicians first excludes a false attachment: the lotus flower and fruit being simultaneous does not mean that a fruit is hidden beforehand within its cause. The second group’s question about the grass hut then distinguishes levels of the provisional: what is broken is a skillful means for transforming others in which one cannot permanently remain, not every kind of skillful means without distinction.
The third group sets the general lotus simile against the seven particular similes. The general simile is like the headrope of a net, and the seven similes like its individual meshes. Placing the headrope in the title does not require every mesh to repeat the lotus. This question also reflects back on the preceding pass Opening and Combining: one general name can combine and embrace many gates without depriving them of their individual characteristics.
The five groups on purport and function use repeated counterarguments to force out the boundary. The cause and fruit of one’s own practice can lead to the Buddha-fruit and are therefore taken as the purport. Whether a Dharma for transforming others is taken as function depends on whether it benefits the faculties present, not solely on whether it directly reaches the ultimate. As the work carries forward into the pass Contemplating the Mind, this method of distinguishing “same term, different assignment” becomes the mutual necessity without confusion of wisdom from hearing and contemplative practice.
8. Placement of the Editions
First, this unit takes T33n1716 as its base. It begins at 0685b07 and ends at 0685c06; 0685c07 has already entered Contemplating the Mind.
Second, the three body-text variant markers across the full range of the seven shared passes occur at 0683b01, 0684a08, and 0688a01. This unit has no body-text variant marker. This conclusion rests on a closed inventory of the variant nodes.
Third, the body text does not number the questions and answers. The twelve groups are established through the analysis in T1717 0828b06–0829a27. The opening anchors in the table serve only as navigation and do not alter the base text.
Fourth, page anchors follow the nearest line number before the first graph of each group’s opening phrase. “Another question” and the two instances of turning the argument around belong to the chain comparing purport and function according to the commentary’s analysis; their different marker forms do not create additional groups.
