Why must the lotus flower fall after it has opened? If the flower does not open, the lotus fruit cannot appear; if the flower never falls, people see only the flower.
The Buddha establishes various skillful means like a flower opening for the sake of the lotus fruit. Skillful means are not a needless detour, because sentient beings cannot yet enter the Wondrous Dharma directly; yet they are not the destination, because every path was always meant to reveal the real. Thus the flower opens: the provisional gate opens, and the true mark appears. The flower falls: attachment to skillful means is released, and the lotus fruit ripens.
The same lotus blossom also illuminates Origin and Trace. Buddhahood attained in the remote past is the Origin; leaving home and attaining the path in recent times is the Trace. The Trace descends from the Origin and is not a rootless illusion. At first, sentient beings see only the flower and think the Buddha has only now attained the path. When the flower unfolds and the lotus fruit appears, they see the Origin in the remote past. When the flower falls and the fruit ripens, the proximate Trace no longer obscures the original ground.
The six similes are therefore not six theories, but two aspects of a single movement of disclosure: in the teaching, the real is revealed through the provisional; in the Buddha's body, the Origin is revealed through the Trace. The conjured city can provide temporary rest, but it is not the treasure place. The grass hut can offer temporary lodging, but it is not the family estate. When skillful means have fulfilled their task, they are not cast aside in disgrace; they have delivered people to the place they always indicated.
The heart-essence of the lotus blossom is that neither opening nor falling can be omitted. If one wants only the flower and does not see the fruit, skillful means become an attachment. If one wants only the fruit and refuses to let the flower open, the real has no gate of entry. True wondrousness does not stand outside skillful means; it lets skillful means live for the sake of the real through establishment, opening, and relinquishment.

Opening the Meaning of the Whole Sutra through Its Title
“Wondrous” means that the principle indicated by this name is inconceivable. “Dharma” means the dharmas of the ten realms, the ten suchnesses, the provisional, and the real. “Lotus blossom” uses the lotus and its flower to illustrate the dharmas of the provisional and the real.
Precisely because the Wondrous Dharma is profound and difficult to understand, it becomes easier to reveal through similes. The lotus blossom can illustrate many meanings; here only the two great divisions before and after in the sutra are taken in brief, forming six similes.
The First Three Similes: The Provisional and the Real
First, the flower opens for the sake of the lotus fruit. This illustrates how the Buddha establishes provisional skillful means for the sake of the real Dharma. The sutra means that the Buddha knows the principle of the foremost quiescence and extinction, yet through the power of skillful means displays various paths. Although he manifests various different paths, their actual purpose remains the sole Buddha Vehicle. The flower opens for the sake of the lotus fruit; skillful means are likewise established for the sake of the real.
Second, the flower's unfolding illustrates opening the provisional; the lotus fruit's appearance illustrates revealing the real. The sutra means: open the gate of skillful means and show the mark of the real. Once the gate originally taught through skillful means has been opened, one can see within the provisional the real that it was meant to reveal.
Third, the flower's falling illustrates abandoning attachment to the provisional; the lotus fruit's ripening illustrates establishing the real. The sutra means: straightforwardly set aside skillful means and teach only the unsurpassed path. This does not deny that skillful means performed a guiding function. It means that when the real has been fully revealed, skillful means are no longer taken as ultimate.
The Final Three Similes: Origin and Trace
The lotus fruit can further illustrate the Origin, and the flower can illustrate the Trace. The Trace is manifested downward from the Origin, and the Trace that is shown is also established in dependence on the Origin.
First, the flower's opening for the sake of the lotus fruit also illustrates manifesting the Trace downward from the Origin. The sutra means: it has in fact been an immensely long time since I attained buddhahood; only to teach and transform sentient beings did I make this statement: “When young, I left home and attained complete awakening.” Buddhahood attained in the remote past is the Origin; manifesting departure from home while young and attainment of the path in the present is the Trace. The Trace descends from the Origin; it is not some separate event apart from it.
Second, the flower's unfolding illustrates opening the Trace; the lotus fruit's appearance illustrates revealing the Origin. The sutra means: all beings in the world think that I have only now begun to attain the path; in fact, since I attained buddhahood, immeasurable and boundless nayuta kalpas have passed. Sentient beings originally saw only the Trace of recent attainment; by opening the Trace, they now see the Origin in the remote past.
Third, the flower's falling illustrates abandoning the Trace as ultimate; the lotus fruit's ripening illustrates establishing the Origin. The sutra means: the Dharma of all buddha-tathāgatas is entirely like this; all manifestations made to liberate sentient beings are real and not false. When the proximate Trace no longer obscures the original ground, everything revealed is a real event.
The Sutra's Entire Work of Teaching Gathered into the Six Similes
Therefore, the sutra's title first sets forth the Wondrous Dharma and then uses the lotus blossom as a simile. It sweeps away sentient beings' attachment to the provisional teaching of the conjured city and discards the stagnant feeling of the poor son, who stays in the grass hut and refuses to advance. It opens the provisional gate of skillful means and reveals the wondrous principle of the real. It gathers the lesser practices among the various wholesome deeds into the vast One Vehicle. Those of superior, middling, and inferior faculties all ultimately receive the Buddha's prediction.
The sutra also discloses the provisional skillful means established by the noble ones to liberate sentient beings and reveals the originally hidden and subtle reality of the remote original ground. Sentient beings thereby increase the path and diminish birth and death, reaching a stage close to great awakening. Throughout this period of teaching and guidance, both phenomena and principle come to completion. Here lies the purport of the six lotus-blossom similes.
“Sutra” and the Sovereign Preface
“Sutra” is called sūtra in the foreign land and is the general name for all sacred teachings. Questions of whether this name is translated or left untranslated will be explained later.
The recorder Guanding explains: “Sovereign Preface” means a preface that narrates this sutra's profound and wondrous purport. That purport appears at the core of the sutra, and the sutra's core does not go beyond Trace and Origin. When one looks up and contemplates this purport, its many meanings become lucid and distinct, each recognizable in its place.
“Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma” narrates the sutra's name; revealing the wondrous principle of the real narrates the sutra's substance; gathering all into the vast One Vehicle narrates its purport; sweeping away attachment to the teaching of the conjured city narrates its function; the completion of this period of teaching and guidance narrates the characteristics of the teaching; and the six similes of the lotus blossom narrate Trace and Origin. Though the preface is brief, its meaning is comprehensive.
Why is one lotus blossom spoken of six times? The sutra title has only five graphs, yet the Sovereign Preface does not hurry past it as a mere name. “Wondrous” means inconceivable; “Dharma” includes the ten realms, the ten suchnesses, the provisional, and the real; the lotus blossom makes the difficult dharmas of the provisional and the real visible through opening, falling, appearing, and ripening. Why, then, does the same lotus blossom not form a single simile but six?
The answer lies in the relation between flower and fruit. The flower is not merely praise, nor does the lotus fruit merely symbolize purity. The flower grows for the fruit; when the flower opens, the fruit appears; when the flower falls, the fruit ripens. These three movements first explain the provisional and the real, then turn to explain Origin and Trace. The image has not changed, but the relation it reveals moves from how a teaching leads people into the real to how the Buddha's body reveals the Origin through the Trace.
If the Wondrous Dharma Is Difficult, Why Begin with a Flower?
The Wondrous Dharma is difficult not because it deliberately hides itself, but because the provisional and the real cannot be cut into two things isolated from one another. If the provisional is regarded as merely false, one cannot understand why the Buddha establishes it. If the real is regarded merely as a final statement, one cannot understand how sentient beings are led there. The lotus blossom allows both to be seen in a single living process: flower and fruit depend on each other and unfold in sequence; they have different functions, yet are not two plants.
Thus the preface first sets forth the Wondrous Dharma and then presents the lotus blossom. The Dharma is what must be understood; the simile makes it manifest. The simile does not add another esoteric doctrine to the Dharma. It turns a relation difficult to grasp all at once into a series of movements: for the sake of, unfolding, appearing, falling, and ripening. By following these movements, the reader can see that the provisional and the real are not static classifications, but the way teaching begins, discloses, and comes to completion.
The First Simile: The Flower Opens for the Fruit; Skillful Means Are Established for the Real
The first simile does not begin by asking whether the flower is beautiful, but what the flower is for. “The flower for the sake of the lotus” shows that the establishment of provisional skillful means has a direction from the outset. The Buddha knows the foremost quiescence and extinction, yet through the power of skillful means shows various paths; amid the many, the true purpose is the Buddha Vehicle. Skillful means are not a side road departing from the real. They are the roads on which the real unfolds so that sentient beings may enter.
This simile preserves both sides. If one sees only the various paths, the Buddha Vehicle is lost amid their differences. If one speaks only of the single Buddha Vehicle, one may deny the varied guidance sentient beings presently require. The flower opens because of the fruit: this neither turns the flower into the destination nor denies the flower's necessity because the fruit is the purpose.
The Second Simile: The Flower Unfolds and the Fruit Appears; Opening Does Not Exchange One Dharma for Another
The second simile moves from purpose to appearance. Only as the flower unfolds does the lotus fruit become visible; only as the gate of skillful means opens can the mark of the real be shown. Opening the provisional does not demolish the existing teaching and bring in a different truth. It sees, as the provisional is opened, the real toward which it had always pointed.
Opening therefore has two movements: it loosens closed attachment to the surface of skillful means, and it indicates the place within those means where the real can be seen. If it performs only the first, nothing remains but negation. If it performs only the second without opening the gate, the real remains sealed outside the provisional teaching. The flower's unfolding and the fruit's appearing happen together, so that breaking attachment and revealing the real are not separated.
The Third Simile: The Flower Falls and the Fruit Ripens; What Is Abandoned Is Attachment, Not the Buddha's Words
The third simile is the easiest to misread as rejection. The falling flower illustrates abandoning the provisional; the ripening fruit illustrates establishing the real. The sutra says to straightforwardly set aside skillful means and speak only the unsurpassed path. If abandonment means that the preceding teaching was entirely wrong, the first simile—establishing the provisional for the real—loses its meaning. The flower opened for the fruit and falls only after fulfilling its function. What is relinquished is the attachment that fixes the flower as the fruit, not the flower's former protection and guidance.
Nor does the ripening of the fruit mean that the real comes into being from nothing. The real has always been the purpose for which skillful means were established; here it is simply no longer concealed by the provisional gate. The three steps of establishment, opening, and relinquishment therefore preserve one another. Without establishment, sentient beings have no gate through which to enter. Without opening, skillful means are mistaken for the ultimate. Without relinquishment, the provisional already opened may be grasped once again.
Why Do the Same Three Movements Speak Again of Origin and Trace?
After the first three similes, the preface says that the lotus again illustrates the Origin and the flower again illustrates the Trace. This word “again” shifts the level of reading: the preceding question concerned the provisional and the real in the teaching; the later question concerns Origin and Trace in the Buddha's body. The flower still exists in dependence on the fruit, and the Trace is likewise not established apart from the Origin. Manifesting the Trace downward from the Origin is therefore not producing a false body from nothing, but the Origin manifesting a visible Trace to teach and transform.
The fourth simile first speaks of the Origin—buddhahood attained in the remote past—and then of the Trace of leaving home while young and attaining awakening in the present. The Trace is not an isolated event but a statement made by the Origin for the sake of sentient beings. The fifth says that all beings in the world think the Buddha has only now begun to attain the path; once the Trace is opened, buddhahood attained in the remote past appears. The sixth says that the Dharma of all buddha-tathāgatas is like this, and that every manifestation made to liberate sentient beings is real and not false. When the proximate Trace is no longer grasped as ultimate, the Origin is established.
The latter three similes correspond to the first three: manifesting the Trace resembles the flower opening for the fruit; opening the Trace resembles the flower unfolding and the fruit appearing; relinquishing the Trace resembles the flower falling and the fruit ripening. Yet Origin and Trace are not merely new names for the provisional and the real. The first three concern how teaching leads toward the real; the latter three concern how the buddha of the remote Origin becomes visible to sentient beings through the proximate Trace. The same image preserves the structure; the different referents preserve the levels.
Why Must the Six Similes Return to the Conjured City, the Grass Hut, and Prediction?
When the six similes are complete, the preface does not stop at the image of the lotus blossom but carries it back into the entire sutra. The conjured city is a place of temporary rest along the journey; if it is grasped as the destination, that attachment must be swept away. The grass hut is where the poor son contents himself outside the gate; if he remains stuck there, it must be abandoned. The gate of skillful means is opened, the wondrous principle of the real is shown, the many lesser wholesome deeds are gathered into the vast One Vehicle, and those of superior, middling, and inferior faculties all receive predictions.
This series of conclusions shows that the six similes do not concern only how the Buddha teaches; they also concern how sentient beings attach, open, and return. Attachment to the conjured city rests in the teaching, while stagnation in the grass hut rests in feeling. On one side, guidance is mistaken for the destination; on the other, people do not dare to accept the great Dharma as their own. Disclosure does more than exchange one view for another. It lets people of differing faculties advance from the places where each has stopped toward the One Vehicle.
Next, the provisional skillful means of the noble ones are disclosed, the hidden subtlety of the original ground is revealed, the path increases as birth and death diminish, and the stage reached neighbors great awakening. Throughout this period of guidance, phenomena and principle are both complete. Only here is the lotus blossom's meaning whole: it speaks both of disclosing the Dharma gate and of disclosing the Buddha's Origin; both of how the teacher establishes means and of how those taught release their clinging and stagnation.
Why Does the Recorder List Five Topics Again at the End?
The Great Master's preface ends with the word “sutra”: it is the general name for the sacred teachings, while questions of translation and nontranslation are left for the later explanation. Guanding then explains that, although the preface appears only to explain the sutra title, it has actually placed the sutra's name, substance, purport, function, characteristics of the teaching, and Origin and Trace within its short compass.
The Lotus Blossom of the Wondrous Dharma is the name; the wondrous principle of the real is the substance; the vast One Vehicle is the purport; sweeping away attachment to the conjured city is the function; the completion of one period of guidance is the teaching; and the six similes narrate Origin and Trace. This is not a rewriting of the preceding passage, but an invitation to turn back and examine it. Every topic was already at work in the similes and their conclusion; it had simply not been explicitly named.
“The text is brief, but the meaning comprehensive” does not mean that a few categories can replace the entire sutra. On the contrary, those categories have content only when they return to the opening and falling flower, the conjured city, the grass hut, predictions, and the original ground in the remote past. The recorder's recapitulation makes the Sovereign Preface a miniature of the whole work and allows the later Five Chapters always to look back toward this lotus blossom already spoken of six times.
Through the Eye of the Shiqian
The reading above has followed the Dharma and similes of the Sovereign Preface itself. Zhanran's Fahua Xuanyi Shiqian further illuminates the pronunciation of the title, the six similes, and the recorder's recapitulation.
First, the graph translated “sovereign” is read in the departing tone and means “to arise” or “beginning.” Wondrousness is delimited by inconceivability, while “Dharma” briefly names realms and suchnesses, leaving their full explanation for later. The language of the provisional and the real must be read through the three meanings of establishment, opening, and relinquishment, not flattened beforehand into a static duality.
Second, the lotus illustrates the real and the flower the provisional; “borrowing” means relying on something, and “revealing” means making manifest. The first three similes concern the provisional and the real; the latter three concern Origin and Trace. Zhanran characterizes the first three as the provisional being established for the sake of the real, the real being seen within the provisional, and there being no provisional left to discuss after opening. He characterizes the latter three through the Trace not standing alone, sentient beings being deluded about the Trace, and no Trace remaining after relinquishment.
In the first simile, skillful means are originally for the Buddha Vehicle. In the second, opening points out the real within the provisional. In the third, relinquishment means that after opening one no longer establishes the provisional. The three meanings continue one another and cannot be compressed into the falling flower alone.
Third, the conjured city is a provisional teaching of the guide, so attachment rests in the teaching; the grass hut is what the practitioner clings to, so stagnation rests in feeling. Those of superior, middling, and inferior faculties receive predictions through the three rounds of teaching by Dharma, by simile, and by causes and conditions from past lives, linking the sweeping away of attachment and the abandonment of stagnation with prediction.
Increasing the path and diminishing birth can be understood through the later simile of weeding and planting: the myriad practices are like planting; wisdom is like weeding; what is diminished is the divided birth of ignorance. “Sutra” is a comprehensive name because all teachings are called sutras; the details of translating the title remain for the later explanation.
Fourth, the stage “neighboring great awakening” is near wondrous awakening; one period begins at the site of quiescence and ends between the crane trees; revealing the Origin completes phenomena, while opening the provisional completes principle. From the words “the recorder explains” onward, Zhanran expressly determines that Zhang'an is explaining the Great Master's intent in the preface. On its surface the Great Master's preface is explaining the name, but in intent it contains all five meanings; Guanding only draws out the distinct meanings already within it. Looking back through this mirror, the five topics still arise from the movement by which the lotus blossom is disclosed six times.
考據Apparatus
This unit opens the whole sutra's profound meaning through its title. It first explains “wondrous” and “Dharma”; next, through six lotus-blossom similes, it separately presents the provisional and the real and Origin and Trace; it then gathers the conjured city, grass hut, One Vehicle, predictions, and the original ground in the remote past, before finally explaining the graph “sutra.” From 「序王」 tr. “Sovereign Preface”〔T33n1716 0681a25〕 through 「有翻、無翻,事如後釋」 tr. “whether it is translated or untranslated will be explained later”〔0681b18〕 is the Great Master's separately circulating preface to the sutra. From 「記者釋曰」 tr. “The recorder explains”〔0681b18〕 through 「文略意周矣」 tr. “the text is brief, but the meaning comprehensive”〔0681b23〕, Guanding draws out the name, substance, purport, function, teaching, and Origin and Trace contained in that preface. The two layers continue one another and should not be merged into a single voice.
1. Doctrinal-Outline Placement
This unit still precedes the main explanation of the Five Chapters. Following the Privately Recorded Origins, it begins with 「序王」 tr. “Sovereign Preface”〔T33n1716 0681a25〕. Its final line, 「文略意周矣」 tr. “the text is brief, but the meaning comprehensive,” is at 0681b23; the next title, 「私序王」 tr. “Private Sovereign Preface”〔0681b25〕, belongs to the following unit. The extant unit boundary follows the complete passage, 0681a25–0681b24, comprising 564 graphs.
The Shiqian gives a general analysis of the three prefaces and identifies this unit with 「初一是大師別行經序」 tr. “The first is the Great Master's separately circulating preface to the sutra”〔T33n1717 0816a27〕. It then identifies the Private Sovereign Preface below as the recorder's preface and the passage beginning “this Wondrous Dharma” as the preface to the Profound Meaning itself. Concerning the present unit, it further says, 「就初序為二:初總攬五義以釋名」 tr. “The first preface is divided in two: first, it gathers the five meanings as a whole to explain the name”〔0816b01〕. It then divides the first portion as 「初釋妙法,次釋蓮華,三釋經」 tr. “first explaining Wondrous Dharma, next explaining the lotus blossom, and third explaining ‘sutra’”〔0816b03〕. Following the base text and the main exegesis, the unit may be divided as follows:
| Section | Range | Anchor in the Base Text | Content | Voice-Layer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 0681a25 | 「序王」 tr. “Sovereign Preface” | Title | outline heading |
| 2 | 0681a26–a28 | from the words explaining wondrousness to 「譬權實法也」 tr. “illustrates the dharmas of the provisional and the real”〔0681a27〕 | Brief explanation of wondrous, Dharma, and lotus blossom | Great Master's separately circulating preface |
| 3 | 0681a28–b11 | 「良以妙法難解」 tr. “Because the Wondrous Dharma is difficult to understand” to 「皆實不虛」 tr. “all are real and not false” | Six lotus-blossom similes: the first three on the provisional and the real, the latter three on Origin and Trace | Great Master's separately circulating preface |
| 4 | 0681b11–b17 | 「是以先標妙法」 tr. “Therefore it first sets forth the Wondrous Dharma” to 「意在斯矣」 tr. “the purport lies here” | Conclusion to the six similes, gathering the sutra's complete work of teaching | Great Master's separately circulating preface |
| 5 | 0681b17–b18 | from the graph “sutra” to 「事如後釋」 tr. “the matter will be explained later” | Brief explanation of “sutra” | Great Master's separately circulating preface |
| 6 | 0681b18–b24 | 「記者釋曰」 tr. “The recorder explains” to 「文略意周矣」 tr. “the text is brief, but the meaning comprehensive”〔0681b23〕 | Guanding explains the preface through the Five Chapters and Origin and Trace | Guanding's explanation |
The six similes are not six items on one level. The first three are, in sequence, establishing the provisional for the sake of the real, opening the provisional to reveal the real, and relinquishing the provisional to establish the real. The latter three are, in sequence, manifesting the Trace downward from the Origin, opening the Trace to reveal the Origin, and relinquishing the Trace to establish the Origin. The flower's opening and falling and the lotus fruit's appearing and ripening give the two sets the same form while preserving their different referents and sequence.
2. Formation and Transmission
This unit directly follows Guanding's record that 「《玄》、《文》各十卷」 tr. “the Xuanyi and Wenju comprise ten fascicles each”〔T33n1716 0681a22–a23〕 and enters the proper preface. The Shiqian expressly identifies 0681a25–b18 as the Great Master's separately circulating preface to the sutra, and at the words 「記者釋曰」 tr. “The recorder explains” states that from there onward 「去章安釋大師序意。」 tr. “Zhang'an explains the Great Master's intent in the preface”〔T33n1717 0817c07〕. Thus, this passage preserves two authorial layers: the speaker's preface and the recorder's explanation. Their adjacency in the opening material does not merge their attributions.
The half-fascicle title in the extant work separately carries the attribution 「天台智者大師說」 tr. “spoken by the Tiantai Master Zhiyi”〔T33n1716 0681c28〕. The attribution 「沙門灌頂述」 tr. “accounted by the monk Guanding”〔0681a05〕 in the Privately Recorded Origins belongs only to the preceding unit. Within the present unit, the Shiqian's analysis of the three prefaces and the base text's own phrase 「記者釋曰」 tr. “The recorder explains”〔0681b18〕 jointly distinguish the layers. The history of the received text is recorded only to the extent established by these explicit words; later combined editions are not projected backward to alter the speakers.

The Canonical Locations of the Ten Realms and Ten Suchnesses
| Layer | Verbatim Text | Verification |
|---|---|---|
| The present preface | Its explanation of Dharma reads 「十界、十如、權實之法也。」 tr. “the dharmas of the ten realms, the ten suchnesses, the provisional, and the real”〔T33n1716 0681a26〕 | It lists the dharmas schematically here without developing them |
| Ten suchnesses in the Lotus Sutra | 「唯佛與佛乃能究盡諸法實相,所謂諸法如是相,如是性,如是體,如是力,如是作,如是因,如是緣,如是果,如是報,如是本末究竟等。」 tr. “Only a buddha together with a buddha can exhaustively fathom the true mark of all dharmas: namely, the suchness of the mark of all dharmas, the suchness of their nature, the suchness of their substance, the suchness of their power, the suchness of their activity, the suchness of their cause, the suchness of their condition, the suchness of their effect, the suchness of their recompense, and the equality from beginning to end”〔T09n0262 0005c10–c13〕 | The root-sutra setting for the ten suchnesses |
| Later explanation in this treatise | 「今經用十法攝一切法」 tr. “The present sutra uses ten dharmas to encompass all dharmas”〔T33n1716 0693b09〕; 「南岳師讀此文皆云如,故呼為十如也」 tr. “When Master Nanyue read this passage, he placed ‘suchness’ after each item; therefore they are called the ten suchnesses”〔0693b12〕 | The treatise itself explains the origin of the name “ten suchnesses” |
| Later explanation in this treatise | 「今明權實者,以十如是約十法界,謂六道、四聖也。」 tr. “In the present clarification of the provisional and the real, the ten suchnesses are applied to the ten Dharma realms, namely the six paths and four noble realms”〔T33n1716 0693c05〕; 「此一法界具十如是,十法界具百如是」 tr. “This one Dharma realm contains the ten suchnesses; the ten Dharma realms contain one hundred suchnesses”〔0693c16–c17〕 | The later text expands them as ten Dharma realms and the six paths and four noble realms; that expansion is not inserted backward into the preface's sentence |
The Shiqian additionally says here, 「略舉界如具攝三千,廣如後釋」 tr. “The brief mention of realms and suchnesses fully encompasses three thousand; the full explanation is as given later”〔T33n1717 0816b13〕. Fully encompassing three thousand is the commentator's comprehensive expression. The verbatim wording of the preface contains only the ten realms, ten suchnesses, and provisional and real; the two layers must not be exchanged for one another.
The Lotus Sutra Passages Cited in the Six Lotus-Blossom Similes
| No. | Citation in the Xuanyi | Present Lotus Sutra | Relationship |
|---|---|---|---|
| Provisional/Real 1 | 「知第一寂滅,以方便力故,雖示種種道,其實為佛乘。」 tr. “Knowing the foremost quiescence and extinction, through the power of skillful means, although he displays various paths, in reality they are for the Buddha Vehicle”〔T33n1716 0681b01–b02〕 | Same wording〔T09n0262 0009b15–b16〕 | Identical |
| Provisional/Real 2 | 「開方便門,示真實相。」 tr. “Open the gate of skillful means and show the mark of the real”〔T33n1716 0681b03〕 | 「此經開方便門,示真實相。」 tr. “This sutra opens the gate of skillful means and shows the mark of the real”〔T09n0262 0031c16〕 | The excerpt is identical; the present text has the preceding words “this sutra” |
| Provisional/Real 3 | 「正直捨方便,但說無上道。」 tr. “Straightforwardly set aside skillful means and speak only the unsurpassed path”〔T33n1716 0681b04–b05〕 | Same wording〔T09n0262 0010a19〕 | Identical |
| Origin/Trace 1 | 「我實成佛來,久遠若斯。但教化眾生,作如是說:『我少出家,得三菩提。』」 tr. “Since I actually attained buddhahood, it has been as remote as this. Only to teach and transform sentient beings did I make this statement: ‘When young, I left home and attained complete awakening’”〔T33n1716 0681b06–b07〕 | 「我少出家,得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。」 tr. “When young, I left home and attained unsurpassed complete perfect awakening”〔T09n0262 0042c07〕; 「然我實成佛已來久遠若斯,但以方便,教化眾生,令入佛道,作如是說。」 tr. “Yet since I actually attained buddhahood, it has been as remote as this. Only through skillful means, teaching and transforming sentient beings and causing them to enter the Buddha path, did I make this statement”〔0042c08〕 | A stitched excerpt whose order is reversed and whose wording omits graphs and abbreviates the full name of awakening |
| Origin/Trace 2 | 「一切世間皆謂今始得道;我成佛來,無量無邊那由他劫。」 tr. “All beings in the world think that I have only now begun to attain the path; since I attained buddhahood, immeasurable and boundless nayuta kalpas have passed”〔T33n1716 0681b08–b10〕 | 「一切世間天、人及阿修羅,皆謂:『今釋迦牟尼佛,出釋氏宮,去伽耶城不遠,坐於道場,得阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。』」 tr. “All the gods, humans, and asuras in the world think: ‘Now Śākyamuni Buddha has left the Śākya palace, gone not far from the city of Gayā, sat at the place of awakening, and attained unsurpassed complete perfect awakening’”〔T09n0262 0042b09–b11〕; 「我實成佛已來無量無邊百千萬億那由他劫。」 tr. “Since I actually attained buddhahood, immeasurable and boundless hundreds of thousands of myriads of koṭis of nayuta kalpas have passed”〔0042b12〕 | A condensed citation omitting the subject, place, and several numerical terms, while summarizing them as present attainment of the path |
| Origin/Trace 3 | 「諸佛如來,法皆如是。為度眾生,皆實不虛。」 tr. “The Dharma of all buddha-tathāgatas is like this. To liberate sentient beings, all is real and not false”〔T33n1716 0681b10–b11〕 | 「諸佛如來,法皆如是,為度眾生,皆實不虛。」 tr. “The Dharma of all buddha-tathāgatas is like this; to liberate sentient beings, all is real and not false”〔T09n0262 0043a07〕 | The graph order is identical; the punctuation differs |
The fourth simile in particular must not be revised to match the familiar order of the root sutra. The Xuanyi first presents the Origin of buddhahood in the remote past and then the Trace of leaving home while young; the present Lotus Sutra in the adjoining text first speaks of leaving home while young and then of buddhahood in the remote past. Each sequence remains with its own text.
Scriptural and Treatise Settings Gathered in the Conclusion to the Six Similes
| Original Line in the Xuanyi | Present Parallel | Relationship |

| 「蕩化城之執教」 tr. “sweep away attachment to the teaching of the conjured city”〔T33n1716 0681b12〕 | Lotus Sutra: 「今此大城,可於中止」 tr. “Here now is this great city; you may stop within it”〔T09n0262 0026a06〕; 「若能前至寶所,亦可得去」 tr. “If you can go onward to the treasure place, you may proceed”〔0026a07〕 | The setting of the conjured-city simile; what is swept away is attachment to the provisional teaching |
| 「廢草庵之滯情」 tr. “discard the stagnant feeling of the grass hut”〔T33n1716 0681b12–b13〕 | 「猶處門外,止宿草庵」 tr. “still remaining outside the gate and lodging in a grass hut”〔T09n0262 0018a29〕 | The setting of the poor-son simile; what is discarded is the practitioner's stagnant feeling |
| 「會眾善之小行,歸廣大之一乘」 tr. “gather the lesser practices among the many wholesome deeds into the vast One Vehicle”〔T33n1716 0681b14〕 | The Lotus Sutra speaks in many places of the One Buddha Vehicle; this sentence does not designate a single verbatim citation | A summary of the sutra's purport as a whole; no single source line is fabricated |
| 「上、中、下根,皆與記莂」 tr. “those of superior, middling, and inferior faculties all receive predictions”〔T33n1716 0681b14–b15〕 | Shiqian: 「三周說竟各授記莂」 tr. “At the conclusion of each of the three rounds of teaching, predictions are conferred”〔T33n1717 0817b19〕 | A doctrinal-outline summary, not presented as continuous wording from the root sutra |
| 「增道損生」 tr. “increase the path and diminish birth”〔T33n1716 0681b16〕 | Later in this treatise, a passage from the Dazhidu Lun is first cited about one person weeding and another planting, followed by the treatise's explanation: 「萬行資成如種,智慧破惑如耘。增道損生,意在於此。」 tr. “The myriad practices provide support for accomplishment like planting; wisdom breaks delusion like weeding. Increasing the path and diminishing birth—this is the purport here”〔T33n1716 0695a27–a28〕 | The treatise uses weeding and planting to explain increase of the path and diminution of birth |
| Present Dazhidu Lun corresponding to the same passage | 「五波羅蜜殖諸功德,般若波羅蜜除其著心、邪見;如一人種穀,一人芸除眾穢,令得增長,果實成就。」 tr. “The five pāramitās plant the various merits; the perfection of wisdom removes attached thoughts and wrong views. It is like one person planting grain while another weeds away the many impurities, causing growth and the fruit's completion”〔T25n1509 0272c02–c04〕 | The present text has planting before weeding; the treatise places weeding before planting; each keeps its base-text order |
| Collation note in the present Dazhidu Lun | The present main text reads 芸, while the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Palace editions preserve the alternate graph 耘〔T25n1509 0272c03〕 | The two graph forms are extant; this is not used to alter the main text of either the Xuanyi or the Dazhidu Lun |
4. Essential Explanations from the Shiqian [the Mirror]
The main exegesis of the Shiqian is attributed 「天台沙門湛然述」 tr. “accounted by the Tiantai monk Zhanran”〔T33n1717 0815b04〕, whereas the prefatory “Origins of the Shiqian” is attributed to Pumenzi〔0815a05〕. Only the line-by-line main exegesis is used in this section.
The Sovereign Preface, Wondrousness, and Dharma
The graph translated “sovereign” in the title is not read as “ruler.” The Shiqian says that it 「謂起也、初也。序起眾文之始」 tr. “means arising and beginning; a preface begins at the start of the many passages”〔0816a29–b01〕. It delimits the graph “wondrous” in a single sentence: 「初釋妙者,但舉一不思議,則已簡於可思議也。」 tr. “In first explaining wondrousness, merely raising the one inconceivable already distinguishes it from the conceivable”〔0816b05〕.
When explaining Dharma, it first says, 「略舉界如具攝三千,廣如後釋」 tr. “The brief mention of realms and suchnesses fully encompasses three thousand; the full explanation is as given later”〔0816b13〕. It then says, 「妙歎於法,法秖是妙,權實之言兼於施等,三義不同,譬中復論故未別出。」 tr. “Wondrousness praises the Dharma, and the Dharma is simply wondrous. The words provisional and real also include establishment and so forth; because the three meanings differ and are discussed again in the similes, they are not separately set out here”〔0816b14〕. The provisional and the real in this passage are therefore not static columns; they must be read through the three operations of establishment, opening, and relinquishment.
The Two Sets of Three Similes
The Shiqian assigns the first pair with 「故蓮以譬實、華以譬權」 tr. “Therefore the lotus illustrates the real and the flower illustrates the provisional”〔0816b20〕 and glosses “borrowing” and “revealing” with 「假藉,彰猶顯也。」 tr. “Borrowing means relying on something; revealing is making manifest”〔0816b22〕. Concerning the base text's 「合成六」 tr. “together forming six”〔T33n1716 0681a29〕, the Shiqian says that the first three and latter three belong to two different groups〔T33n1717 0816b27〕.
| Simile | Movement in the Base Text | Reading in the Shiqian |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | The flower for the sake of the lotus | 「雖復施權,本為於實。」 tr. “Although the provisional is established, it is originally for the sake of the real”〔0816c22〕 |
| 2 | The flower unfolds, the lotus appears | 「今指權為實、於權見實,名方便門開。」 tr. “Now pointing to the provisional as the real and seeing the real within the provisional is called opening the gate of skillful means”〔0816c25〕 |
| 3 | The flower falls, the lotus ripens | 「捨是廢之別名」 tr. “Setting aside is another name for relinquishing”〔0816c27〕; after opening, no provisional remains to discuss |
| 4 | Manifesting the Trace downward from the Origin; the Trace depends on the Origin | 「示迹不孤立」 tr. “The manifested Trace does not stand alone”〔0817a07〕; the Trace is not ultimate |
| 5 | Opening the Trace, revealing the Origin | It first states how all are deluded about the Trace, then opens the Trace through buddhahood attained in the remote past〔0817a12〕 |
| 6 | Relinquishing the Trace, establishing the Origin | 「廢已無迹」 tr. “After relinquishment, there is no Trace”〔0817a15〕; therefore the Trace is no longer taken as ultimate |
The first group maps flower and lotus onto the provisional and the real; the second maps them onto Trace and Origin. The same objects bear different relations. This is precisely why the six similes cannot be compressed into one generic lotus image.
Conclusion and the Recorder's Explanation
The Shiqian expressly says that the passage beginning 「是以先標」 tr. “Therefore it first sets forth” is the conclusion to the six similes〔0817a17〕. It distinguishes 「化城是導師權說」 tr. “The conjured city is a provisional teaching of the guide”〔0817a25〕 from 「草菴是行者所執」 tr. “The grass hut is what the practitioner clings to”〔0817a26〕. The former is attachment within the teaching, the latter stagnation in feeling. The predictions of the three faculties are aligned with the three rounds of teaching: 「前蕩化城是為下根作宿世譬,前廢草菴是為中根作譬喻說,前開方便是為上根但作法說」 tr. “The preceding sweeping away of the conjured city gives the simile from a past life for those of inferior faculties; the preceding discarding of the grass hut gives the teaching by simile for those of middling faculties; the preceding opening of skillful means gives only the teaching by Dharma for those of superior faculties”〔0817b17〕.
Concerning 「增道損生,位隣大覺」 tr. “increase the path, diminish birth, and reach a stage neighboring great awakening”〔T33n1716 0681b16〕, the Shiqian explains “neighboring” by the stage in the “Distinguishing Qualities” chapter being close to wondrous awakening〔T33n1717 0817b27〕. Concerning 「一期化導」 tr. “one period of teaching and guidance”〔T33n1716 0681b16〕, it determines the period as beginning at the site of quiescence and ending at the crane trees; it takes revealing the Origin as completion in phenomena and opening the provisional as completion in principle〔T33n1717 0817b28〕. The phrase 「都名」 tr. “comprehensive name” for “sutra”〔T33n1716 0681b18〕 means that all the teachings of the five flavors are called sutras〔T33n1717 0817c05〕; details concerning the translated title are left for later.
At 「記者釋曰」 tr. “The recorder explains”〔T33n1716 0681b18〕, the Shiqian expressly marks Zhang'an as explaining the Great Master's intent in the preface〔T33n1717 0817c07〕. It further says that, although on its surface the Great Master's preface appears only to explain the name, in intent it already contains the substance, purport, function, and so forth; Guanding draws out these distinct meanings〔0817c08〕. Thus, the five topics in the final portion are the recorder's recapitulation, not a verbatim list in the preceding passage.
5. Explanations of Various Masters
The Qing monk Zhiquan's Fahua Jing Xuanqian Zhengshi, X28n0592, is a later ancient commentary. Fascicle one is attributed 「苕上沙門 智銓 述」 tr. “accounted by the monk Zhiquan of Tiaoshang”〔X28n0592 0557b12〕. Its explanation of the Sovereign Preface begins with 「序王相待麤,絕待玅」 tr. “In the Sovereign Preface, relational [wondrousness] is coarse and absolute [wondrousness] is wondrous”〔0560a23〕. It also says, 「並順二義。既蓮與華皆可為始,則蓮前華後,華前蓮後,無不可者。故約機約佛,並順蓮華前後二義。」 tr. “Both follow the two meanings. Since both lotus and flower may be taken as the beginning, there is no impossibility whether lotus precedes and flower follows or flower precedes and lotus follows. Thus, in terms of the capacity and in terms of the Buddha, both sequences of lotus and flower accord with the two meanings”〔0560b19–b21〕. These two passages directly address the title of this unit and the before-and-after relation of lotus and flower. They are recorded here without being merged with the Shiqian.
6. Terminology
Sovereign Preface. The graph wang is read in the departing tone and means arising or beginning; a preface begins the many passages〔T33n1717 0816a29–b01〕. It does not mean the sovereign among prefaces or a preface belonging to a ruler.
Wondrous. The base text directly says that wondrousness 「名不可思議也」 tr. “names the inconceivable”〔T33n1716 0681a26〕; the Private Sovereign Preface further says 「褒美不可思議之法」 tr. “praising the inconceivable Dharma”〔0681c15〕. Wondrousness first praises the inconceivability of the Dharma and is not replaced by later schematic categories.
Ten realms and ten suchnesses. This preface lists only the two names. Only later does the treatise say that the ten Dharma realms are the six paths and four noble realms〔0693c05〕, and that each Dharma realm contains ten suchnesses, producing one hundred suchnesses〔0693c16–c17〕. The ten suchnesses directly follow the ten “suchness” clauses in the Lotus Sutra〔T09n0262 0005c10–c13〕.
Provisional and real. In the first three of the six similes, they have the three meanings of establishment, opening, and relinquishment; the lotus illustrates the real and the flower the provisional〔T33n1717 0816b20〕. The provisional is not falsehood, nor does the real erase everything previously taught. What the similes reveal is a relation of establishment, disclosure, and relinquishment of attachment.
Origin and Trace. In the latter three similes, the lotus is the Origin and the flower the Trace. Manifesting the Trace downward from the Origin first says that the manifestation has a root; opening the Trace to reveal the Origin makes the original ground in the remote past visible; relinquishing the Trace to establish the Origin means no longer taking the Trace of recent attainment as ultimate.
Prediction. The graph form 莂 in the base text is a graphic form of 別 and here means a prediction. Those of superior, middling, and inferior faculties all receive predictions; it does not mean classification or separation.
Increasing the path and diminishing birth. The later treatise explains with planting and weeding: the myriad practices provide support like planting, and wisdom breaks delusion like weeding〔T33n1716 0695a27–a28〕. “Diminishing birth” means the gradual diminution of divided birth rooted in ignorance, not harming life.
Later summary expressions. The Five Periods and Eight Teachings, modes of transformation, methods of transformation, Tripiṭaka/shared/distinct/perfect, the ten subtleties of the Trace Gate, the ten subtleties of the Origin Gate, and “three thousand in one thought-moment” are summary expressions commonly used in later guidance and synthesis. They are not verbatim terms in this unit at 0681a25–b24. If used for navigation, these names must remain layered apart from the six similes, Five Chapters, and Origin and Trace actually found in the text.
7. Similes · Cross-Reading · Carrying Forward
The Six Lotus-Blossom Similes
The force of the six similes lies in movement. The flower for the sake of the lotus means the real is the purpose and the provisional an establishment. The flower's unfolding and the fruit's appearing mean seeing the real within opening. The flower's falling and the fruit's ripening mean the attached provisional recedes while the real is established. Turning to Origin and Trace, the flower descends from the Origin, unfolds to reveal the Origin, and falls as the Origin ripens. The flower is not reduced to decoration, nor the lotus fruit to a static symbol. Opening, falling, appearing, and ripening together bear the temporality and relations of teaching the Dharma.
The six citations from the root sutra occur in “Skillful Means,” “The Dharma Teacher,” and “The Lifespan of the Tathāgata.” The first three connect skillful means with the Buddha Vehicle, the gate of skillful means with the mark of the real, and setting aside skillful means with the unsurpassed path. The latter three place the Trace of leaving home while young alongside the Origin of buddhahood in the remote past. Returning all six passages to the root sutra shows that this preface does not invent a new simile for the sutra but uses one lotus blossom to rearrange the line of disclosure running through the entire text.
The Conjured City, Grass Hut, and One Vehicle
The conjured city comes from “The Parable of the Conjured City” chapter, and the grass hut from the “Faith and Understanding” chapter. The first is the guide's provisional teaching; the second is the practitioner's stagnant feeling. The conclusion places the two similes together, yet what each breaks is different. The following line, 「會眾善之小行,歸廣大之一乘」 tr. “gather the lesser practices among the many wholesome deeds into the vast One Vehicle”〔T33n1716 0681b14〕, gathers the movement of sweeping away attachment and discarding stagnation into return rather than leaving it at negation.
In cross-reading with the Mohe Zhiguan, the Xuanyi opens a gate to reading the sutra through its title, the six similes, and the Five Chapters, while the Zhiguan uses contemplative practice to make what is understood into what is practiced. Read together, the two works show teaching and contemplation supporting one another. This unit itself, however, speaks only of the title's meaning and disclosure; the names of practices from the Zhiguan should not be written backward into the original meaning of the six similes.
Chapter Five of the Outline of the Tiantai School arranges the lifetime teaching through later schematic categories, while Chapter Six explains five questions—explaining the name, discerning the substance, clarifying the purport, discussing the function, and classifying the teaching. Chapter Six separately uses the ten subtleties within the Trace and within the Origin to guide readers through the whole work. Its chapter headings use “ten subtleties of the Trace Gate” and “ten subtleties of the Origin Gate,” later abbreviations for guidance; the text's actual forms must return to 「迹中十妙者」 tr. “as for the ten subtleties within the Trace”〔T33n1716 0697c01〕 and 「明本十妙者」 tr. “clarifying the ten subtleties of the Origin”〔0765a12〕. These routes help place the Sovereign Preface but do not replace the original wording or order of its six similes.
What Guanding carries forward in the final passage is especially important. He does not add a set of principles competing with the preface; he explicitly marks the name, substance, purport, function, teaching, and Origin and Trace already at work in it. The preface thereby becomes a miniature of the whole work. As the later text unfolds, readers can continue returning to this short passage to test its lines of thought.
8. Placement of the Editions
First, this unit uses T33n1716 as its base text. Its title begins at 0681a25, its main text at 0681a26, and it ends at 0681b24; the next title at 0681b25 is not part of this unit.
Second, the entire unit falls within the range of the three prefaces, 0681a03–0681c23, where the main text contains zero variant markers. The first variant marker in the main text appears at 0683b01, beyond this unit. The source-edition note attached to the opening title at 0681a03 likewise is not a main-text variant in this unit.
Third, the six Lotus Sutra citations in this unit stand in different relations to the present text: complete identity, identity of an excerpt, excerpts, condensations, and stitching. Collation first preserves T1716's sentence order and omissions, then places the present T262 alongside it; the longer wording of the root sutra is not silently inserted into the treatise.
Fourth, the opening chapter list in this treatise has 「辨體第二」 tr. “second, discerning the substance”〔0681c29〕, 「論用第四」 tr. “fourth, discussing the function”〔0682a01〕, and 「判教第五」 tr. “fifth, classifying the teaching”〔0682a01〕. The later chapter openings separately have 「顯體」 tr. “revealing the substance”〔0779a06〕, 「明用」 tr. “clarifying the function”〔0796c02〕, and 「釋教相」 tr. “explaining the characteristics of the teaching”〔0800a19〕. The two forms are recorded side by side and are not altered into one another.
Fifth, page anchors begin at the line nearest the first graph of a quotation; quotations crossing lines are marked with their opening and closing lines. The present-text parallels for the fourth and fifth similes cross two locations and are marked separately rather than being joined as one continuous root-sutra passage.
