A doctrine-pointer unit (a definition-type stage). Stage 09, the Stage without Mind, sets up no substance of its own — it is "expounded together with" Stage 08, the Stage with Mind, both judged by the one set of five gates (Stage 08 is the seat of the joint exposition, holding the full text whole across the five layers). This unit marks clearly only the one face of "without mind": what the "without mind" that each of the five gates judges out actually is, and how they all gather up into the ultimate truth; then it points back to the shared main text.
How the Treatise Defines It
The two stages, with mind and without mind, the treatise does not define separately but expounds together, judging both by the five gates in common:
tr. "What is the Stage with Mind? What is the Stage without Mind? These two stages are both to be known in their characteristics by five gates." 〔the treatise〕
So "without mind" has no single definition — it is one face that each of the five gates measures out.
The "Without Mind" Judged by Each of the Five Gates
- The Gate of the Designation of Stages: the attainment of no-perception, birth in no-perception, and the attainment of cessation are the Stage without Mind (the remaining stages have mind throughout).
- The Gate of Whether the Mind Is Disturbed or Not: all the inverted, disturbed minds are named the Stage without Mind (「亂心,亦名無心,性失壞故」 tr. "a disturbed mind, too, is named without-mind, since its nature is spoiled" — this is the "without mind" of a "mind that has lost its own nature," not a mind that does not arise).
- The Gate of Whether the Mind Arises or Not: meeting a cause-and-condition "that makes the mind not arise" (the faculty being broken, the object not appearing before one, the lack of attention… one of the eight causes-and-conditions), the mind then does not arise, and this is named the Stage without Mind.
- The Gate of the Phases: six phases are named the Stage without Mind — 「無心睡眠位、無心悶絕位、無想定位、無想生位、滅盡定位、及無餘依涅槃界位」 tr. "the phase of mindless sleep, the phase of mindless swoon, the phase of the attainment of no-perception, the phase of birth in no-perception, the phase of the attainment of cessation, and the phase of the realm of nirvāṇa without remaining basis."
- The Gate of the Ultimate Truth: 「唯無餘依涅槃界中,是無心地」 tr. "only within the realm of nirvāṇa without remaining basis is there the Stage without Mind."
A Single Stroke of Judgment: True Mindlessness Is Nirvāṇa Alone; in the Rest, the Turning Consciousnesses Cease While the Store Consciousness Remains
When the five gates have measured to the end, the Gate of the Ultimate Truth gathers the whole up in one line: those "without mind" states (the attainment of no-perception, the attainment of cessation, sleep, swoon…) are in fact only the ceasing of the turning consciousnesses (the first seven consciousnesses), while 「阿賴耶識未永滅盡,於第一義非無心地」 tr. "the store consciousness is not forever extinguished, and in the ultimate truth this is not the Stage without Mind." Nirvāṇa without remaining basis alone, because 「阿賴耶識亦永滅」 tr. "the store consciousness too is forever extinguished," is the ultimate, thoroughgoing mindlessness. So "without mind" is almost never "without the store consciousness"; it is only "without the turning consciousnesses" — the store consciousness is the ground that runs through every mindless phase and holds up the continuity of life. This is precisely the deepest consciousness-only sense of the two stages, with mind and without mind (see in detail the Exposition of Stage 08).
Pointing Back to the Shared Main Text
The full span of the Stage without Mind — the gate-by-gate establishment of the five gates, the face of "with mind," the eight causes-and-conditions, and the scriptural proof of the store consciousness — is expounded together with the Stage with Mind, held whole in Stage 08, the Two Stages with Mind and without Mind (the five layers: source text, vernacular, exposition, apparatus, and heart-essence). This unit only marks out the criteria and the gathering-up of the one face of "without mind"; for the full text, read it in the shared main text of Stage 08.
