〔T32 0412b〕
心要Essence

The Practice Chapter opens with the earth kasiṇa. A single series of questions first establishes the framework of the whole practice: its name, its cultivation, its characteristic, function, and proximate cause, and its benefits. The definition takes only one sentence—a mind arising in dependence on the earth sign. The benefits are said to be twelve, from the sign being easy to obtain through to the Deathless as the boundary. The questions that remain are each continued in what follows.

白話Plain reading

The Questions Set Out Together

The chapter opens by asking all of these questions together: What is the earth kasiṇa? How is it cultivated? What is its characteristic? What is its function? What is its proximate cause? What benefits does it have? What does the expression “kasiṇa” mean? How many kinds of earth are there? From what kind of earth is the sign taken? How is the maṇḍala method carried out? How is the earth practice cultivated? The reply begins with the definition and answers each question in sequence through the benefits; the remaining questions are answered one by one in what follows.

A Mind Arising in Dependence on the Earth Sign

The reply first states the definition: a mind arising in dependence on the earth sign—this is called the earth kasiṇa.

Cultivation, Characteristic, Function, and Proximate Cause

For the mind to abide without distraction is cultivation. Skill in delighting in the perception of earth is its characteristic. Not relinquishing it is its function. An intention without a different thought is its proximate cause.

Twelve Benefits

It is said to have twelve benefits: through the earth kasiṇa, the sign is easily obtained; at all times and in every mode of conduct, the mind proceeds without obstruction; one gains supernormal powers according to one's wish; one can tread upon water and move through the air as though upon earth; one receives discriminative knowledge concerning the various forms; the initial recollection and discriminative knowledge of former lives; discriminative knowledge of the sphere of the divine ear; one proceeds toward a fortunate destination; and the Deathless is the boundary. The source announces twelve, but does not number the items one by one. They are therefore retained in their original sequence without imposing a single definitive division.

義疏Exposition

Asking the Whole Set of Questions First

The chapter's practice-by-practice exposition begins with the earth kasiṇa. At the outset, this passage asks the whole set of questions at once: what this practice is, how it is cultivated, what its characteristic, function, and proximate cause are, what benefits it has, and then the meaning of kasiṇa, the kinds of earth, the earth from which a sign is taken, the method of making a maṇḍala, and the cultivation of the earth practice. The reply answers through the benefits first; the remaining questions are taken up in sequence below. This opening thus establishes the framework of an entire practice: first learn what must be asked, then receive the answers item by item.

The Definition Falls upon the Mind

The definition of the earth kasiṇa is only one sentence: a mind arising in dependence on the earth sign. The name speaks of earth, but what is established is a mind; the earth sign is that in dependence on which this mind arises.

Four Matters: Cultivation, Characteristic, Function, and Proximate Cause

Cultivation is the mind's abiding without distraction. The characteristic is skill in delighting in the perception of earth. The function is not relinquishing it. The proximate cause is an intention without a different thought.

The Twelve Benefits as the Close

The passage closes by presenting the benefits. It says there are twelve, beginning with the sign being easy to obtain and ending with the Deathless as the boundary: at all times and in every mode of conduct, the mind proceeds without obstruction; supernormal powers occur according to one's wish; one treads upon water and moves through the air as though upon earth; one receives discriminative knowledge concerning various forms, the initial recollection and discriminative knowledge of former lives, discriminative knowledge of the sphere of the divine ear, and proceeds toward a fortunate destination. This string of benefits carries the practice from the first obtaining of its sign all the way to its boundary.

考據Apparatus

1. Location of the Passage

This section opens the chapter “The Practice.” The chapter title stands at 412b21; this passage begins at 412b22 and is the first question-and-answer treatment in the practice-by-practice exposition of the thirty-eight subjects of practice. Its answers extend through the benefits. The remaining questions in the opening series—the meaning of kasiṇa, the kinds of earth, the earth from which the sign is taken, the making of the maṇḍala, and the cultivation of the earth practice—are answered in sequence below. The enumeration and classification of the thirty-eight subjects of practice belong to the preceding chapter, “Distinguishing Subjects of Practice,” not to this chapter.

Anchor for the complete passage

〔T32, 412b22–412c01〕

2. Terms and Intratextual Context

一切入 (kasiṇa): its meaning is posed as one question in the opening series and answered later by the text itself; this section does not anticipate that answer. 曼陀羅 (maṇḍala): retained according to the wording of the question; its method is made clear by the later answer. 辯—色辯, 宿命辯, and 天耳界辯—and 甘露 are all retained according to their use in this passage, without supplying meanings from another chapter or another work. 十二功德: the passage announces twelve benefits but does not number them item by item. Their segmentation is not made explicit here, and this apparatus does not assign the count on the text's behalf.

3. Editorial Notes and Variant Readings

There are three editorial notes within this range. At 412b21, the words 第八 in the chapter-title line are absent from the Gong edition. At 412b25, in 心不亂住是為修, the Taishō edition has 名 after 是, thus reading 是名為修, while the Korean edition lacks 名; the present text follows the Korean edition. At 412b28, after 心 in 於一切行心行無礙, the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Gong editions have 無. The present text follows the Taishō edition here. All three readings are recorded without emendation and are not made the basis of a doctrinal claim.
