Chengweishilun — Vijñaptimātratāsiddhi · Continuous Heart-Essence
Preface · The General Statement of Consciousness-Only
Vasubandhu composed thirty verses; ten masters, Dharmapāla among them, wrote commentaries; Xuanzang welded them into one work — and so this treatise came to be. Its first move is not a conclusion but a question: the world and the sacred teaching alike speak of a self and of dharmas; if all is consciousness-only, what are those words worth?
The answer turns on one light word that decides the course of the whole book: provisional. “By provisional designation, self and dharmas” does not preserve the real self and real dharmas imagined by the deluded: those are wholly absent. What can be designated in dependence are the semblances of self and dharmas transformed by inner consciousness; they occur, but they are not the natures of a real self or real dharmas. Provisional does not mean deceitful. It means established upon something. Upon what? Upon the aspects into which consciousness transforms.
Hence "the manifold aspects turn" — every difference you see is a transformation of consciousness. And the consciousnesses that transform are of three kinds only: maturation (the eighth), deliberation (the seventh), object-discernment (the first six). The frame of the whole treatise stands up in the first verse.
Three things in the opening pages repay attention. The verse of homage — "I bow to the nature of consciousness-only, and to the perfectly and the partially purified" — pays homage to that nature, and to two kinds of person: the perfectly purified (buddhas) and the partially purified (bodhisattvas). On why the treatise was made three accounts are given: Sthiramati and others, that beings might realize the two emptinesses, sever the two obstructions, win the two fruits; Citrabhāna and others, that they might penetrate the two emptinesses and know the principle of consciousness-only as it is; Dharmapāla and others, to block such divergent graspings as that the outer object is no less existent than consciousness, or the inner consciousness no more existent than its object. Three accounts set side by side and none adjudicated — the manner of this treatise throughout.
The first thing to distinguish is that the treatise speaks at two levels, not with one undifferentiated “exists” or “does not exist.” An outer object is not existent as consciousness is; inner consciousness, arising from causes and conditions, is not absent as the imagined object is. The object provisionally established upon inner consciousness exists conventionally, while consciousness, the basis of that provisional object, also exists ultimately. Thus both superimposition and denial are blocked.
破我執Refuting the Self-Attachment
The refutation of self-grasping reads like a long debate, but the treatise uses one method throughout: it does not deny what you feel; it presses you on the specifications of the thing you claim.
First round, size. You say the self is a permanent, single, real entity — then how large is it? If it is the size of the body, then it grows as the body grows and is not permanent. If it is minute as a mote, how does it work this whole body? If it pervades everywhere, then your self and another's overlap, and you would act while another reaped. All three answers close.
Second round, relation. Is the self identical with the five aggregates or different? If identical, the aggregates arise and cease, and so does it — no permanent self. If different, then apart from form, feeling, conception, formations and consciousness, can you point to it? If you cannot, it has no place to stand.
Third round, most direct: does this self do anything? If it acts, action entails change, and it is not permanent. If it does not act, what is it for — a thing neither moving nor receiving, with no bearing on you at all, why call it "I"?
The heterodox refuted, the treatise turns to the Vātsīputrīyas of the Lesser Vehicle, who posited an "inexpressible self," of which one may not say it is the same as the aggregates or different, and yet held it real. The reply is short: what cannot be spoken of cannot be posited as real.
At the last, a distinction. Self-grasping is of two kinds. Discriminated self-grasping is acquired — one hears a doctrine and grasps accordingly; it is severed at the path of seeing. Innate self-grasping is born with one, arising spontaneously, and is not exhausted until the path of cultivation and beyond.
That distinction matters: discriminated self-grasping is not severed by ordinary intellectual understanding. It is removed at the initial path of seeing, through contemplating the suchness of the emptiness of persons in all dharmas. The subtler innate self-grasping is removed only through repeated cultivation of the superior contemplation of personal emptiness on the subsequent path of cultivation.
Refuting the Dharma-Attachment (I) · The Real Dharmas of the Heterodox
The self refuted, the treatise turns to dharmas. Dharma-attachment is the conviction that outside the mind those things are really there — not the self, but everything other than the self.
The method is disciplined: each entity a school holds real is tested within that school’s own claims about its substance, characteristics, activity, and causal relations.
Sāṃkhya says the Great and the other twenty-three principles are composed of the three constituents, and then says they are real, and grasped by direct perception. The treatise replies: if several things go into their making, they are as an army is, or a forest — an army is only many soldiers, a forest only many trees, and there is no further entity called army. What is composed is provisional, and direct perception does not meet it.
Vaiśeṣika posits substance, quality, motion and the rest, six categories each with its own nature. The same taking-apart: is being identical with the thing that has being? Then being is no nature of anything. Different? Then the thing does not have its being from being. Neither identity nor difference stands, and all four positions fall.
Is Maheśvara real, omnipresent, eternal, and able to produce every dharma? If that deity possesses every power and exists always, all dharmas should arise at once, everywhere and at every time. If production must await desire or other conditions, the thesis of a single cause is abandoned. Is sound eternal? Sound that signifies and appears only in dependence upon conditions cannot be permanent. Are atoms real and able to produce gross form? An atom with spatial parts can be divided and so is not ultimately real; one without parts cannot aggregate to produce gross form.
It reads like a series of debates, but one test recurs: can the proposed real dharma preserve all the conditions its own thesis assigns to it — permanence, pervasion, unity, efficacy, or the production of effects? What is composed of many things, like an army or a forest, is provisional; what is permanent yet productive becomes impermanent through activity; an atom with parts is divisible, while one without parts cannot combine into gross form. The conditions conflict with one another, so a real dharma outside consciousness cannot be established.
Refuting the Dharma-Attachment (I) · Lesser-Vehicle Real Form and the Non-Concurrent Formations
The Lesser Vehicle does not hold the self, principles and categories of the heterodox. What it holds is plainer: that form is real, and that a further class of things which are neither form nor mind — attainment, the life-faculty, group-homogeneity, the mindless attainment, arising-abiding-changing-ceasing — is real too.
The treatise refutes form first. You say gross form is composed of atoms? Then ask of the atom: has it spatial parts, an above and below, a left and right? If it has, it can be divided again and is no atom; if it has not, there is no contact and no accumulation, and no mountain can be made of it. Neither way goes through. And the blue and yellow, the long and short the five consciousnesses meet? Those are the image-part into which consciousness transforms, not a thing outside the mind.
Then the non-concurrent formations. Attainment — you say that when a fruit is realized some further thing called attainment is added to you? It is only a provisional name for a phase of accomplishment. Life-faculty — you say there is a separate entity maintaining the lifespan? It is provisionally established upon the seed that directly produces the maturation consciousness, specifically its karma-determined capacity to fix the duration of continuance. If arising, abiding, changing, and ceasing were four separately real entities coexisting at once, their functions should operate at once at every time. If their operation must await further conditions, the four entities are superfluous. The four marks are therefore provisionally established as phases of a conditioned dharma: previously absent and now present, temporarily abiding and changing, then no longer present.
The chapter is long and refutes finely, but it draws a precise boundary: obstructive form is a transformation of inner consciousness, not a compound of real atoms; attainment, life-faculty, the four marks, and the other non-concurrent formations are provisionally established upon capacities or phases of form, mind, and the rest. The visible aspect and such differences as accomplishment, lifespan, and arising and ceasing are not erased; what is denied is a second entity apart from transformation and phase.
Refuting the Dharma-Attachment (II) · The Unconditioned · Establishing Consciousness-Only
The refutation of dharma-grasping closes here. The heterodox reals, the Lesser Vehicle's real form and non-concurrent formations have all been refuted; one class remains, the hardest: the unconditioned.
Space, cessation-through-discernment, cessation-not-through-discernment — unarising, unceasing, unchanging, unmoving, these look best qualified to be real. How does the treatise refute them? By asking: has your unconditioned a substance or not? If not, it is simply absent and there is nothing to argue. If it has, is it permanent or impermanent? Permanent, and it can exercise no function, entering into relation with nothing else — and how does a functionless dharma differ from one with no substance at all?
Again: does space pervade everywhere? If it does, it occupies the same place as form, and the two obstruct each other; if it does not, it is not space. Cessation-through-discernment is disclosed by severing affliction — then was it there before the severing? If it was, it did not wait upon severing; if it was not, it is something produced, and not unconditioned.
The conclusion is not that the unconditioned does not exist, but that the unconditioned is a name provisionally set upon suchness, not an entity real apart from consciousness. Suchness is the true nature of consciousness, not a thing outside it.
Both graspings refuted, the treatise establishes consciousness-only: since neither self nor dharma apart from consciousness can be found, what remains is consciousness alone. Two further points are added — dharma-grasping too is innate and discriminated, severed on a course like that of self-grasping but harder; and what dharma-grasping takes as object is only the semblance of a dharma manifested by one's own mind, never a dharma outside it.
“Consciousness-only” is taught to dispel grasping at a real object outside mind, not to establish an unchanging, truly real consciousness in its place. Mind and mental factors themselves arise dependently and are like illusions, not ultimately real. To grasp consciousness-only as truly existent is, like grasping an outer object, still dharma-grasping.
Reconciling “the Conventional Must Rest on the Real” · Establishing Provisional Self and Dharmas
Both graspings refuted, an objection comes from the other side: you say self and dharmas are provisional designations — but whatever is provisional is set up in dependence on the real, on a real thing, a semblance, a shared attribute. If so, a real self and real dharmas apart from consciousness must exist; otherwise on what does your "provisional" rest?
The objection is strong, for it grants your premise and then turns it against you. The treatise peels it back layer by layer.
First, provisional designation by class. The fierceness and redness involved when a person is called “fire” do not belong to the class itself; moreover, persons and such qualities are plainly found apart from one another. Since the class has no such qualities and class and qualities can be separate, provisional designation is not established upon a class.
Next, provisional designation on a real thing. Fierceness and redness in fire and fierceness and redness in a person are distinct because their supports are distinct; there is no one real shared quality upon which the designation could rest. Moreover, when one calls the person “fire,” the designation is made of the person, not of those qualities. Thus provisional designation is not established upon a shared real thing either.
Then the general rule itself. If “real” means a thing’s own-characteristic, neither conventional cognition nor expression reaches it; both operate only upon common characteristics. Expression and what it expresses also arise in dependence on sound, and where sound does not reach, they do not operate. Provisional designation therefore does not depend upon a real own-characteristic. It turns upon an augmented semblance manifested in consciousness.
So the conclusion: the provisional in “provisional designation of self and dharmas” rests upon semblances manifested by consciousness in order to dispel grasping at a real self and real dharmas, not upon realities outside mind. The text then identifies the three transformers: the eighth as maturation, the seventh as deliberation, and the first six as discernment of objects. It further distinguishes transformation as cause from transformation as result, showing how equal-flow and maturation habit-energies yield equal-flow and maturation results. Here “maturation” names specifically the result-consciousness grasped by self-love and holding contaminated seeds, not every maturation dharma.
The chapter looks like a tidying-up. In fact it is the closing of the door. What went before refuted what others had posited; this refutes the place you might still have retreated to once the refuting was done.
The First Transformer · The Ālaya (I) · The Three Aspects · Seeds
In the first chapter on the ālaya the treatise gives it three faces — its own aspect, its fruit aspect, its cause aspect.
Its own aspect is ālaya, storing: it stores (holding all seeds), is stored into (perfumed by the first seven), and is grasped as a store (taken by the seventh for a self). Of the three, the grasping matters most — what is relinquished at the arhat stage is precisely that title.
Its fruit aspect is maturation: it is the whole retributive body called forth by wholesome and unwholesome deeds, maturing at another time, in another class, through alteration. Your body and mind in this life are it.
Its cause aspect is all-seeds: it holds the seeds of every dharma and is the direct cause of their arising.
The treatise then spends its length on the seeds. Six senses of a seed — momentary cessation, co-presence with its fruit, constant continuity, determinacy of nature, dependence on conditions, producing its own fruit — six, and a seed fails without any one. They read like definitions but work as safeguards: against imagining a seed as a thing lying still somewhere. A seed is a differentiated capacity, arising and ceasing moment upon moment in continuity.
Here too the famous dispute: innate or newly perfumed? The first position holds that all seeds exist by nature and are only increased through perfuming; the second, that every seed is produced through perfuming; the third, that the seeds of each kind comprise both the innately present and the newly arisen. The treatise refutes both “innate only” and “newly arisen only,” and concludes that both kinds obtain.
Last, perfuming: four senses of what is perfumed (stability, moral neutrality, receptivity, conjunction with the perfumer) and four of the perfumer (arising and ceasing, potent function, increase and decrease, conjunction with what it perfumes). Four against four, and perfuming fails without one.
The most practical line here is that what is perfumed must be neutral — the storehouse itself has to be neither good nor bad in order to hold both. A mind that took sides could not keep what opposed it. That is why the eighth consciousness must be unobstructed-and-neutral.
The Gate of Object and Mode · The Four Parts
What does the ālaya cognize? One class is what it appropriates: the body endowed with faculties and all contaminated seeds that it holds. Uncontaminated seeds lodge in this consciousness but are not its objects. The other class is the locale: the receptacle-world in which one stands, its mountains and rivers.
And how does it cognize? By discerning. Simply discerning — passing no judgement, raising no like or dislike, merely registering.
The weight of the verse falls on the word set at its head: imperceptible. Not that the thing is absent, but that it is too fine — too fine in what it takes, too fine in the taking, so fine that an ordinary mind looking for it will not find it. The Saṃdhinirmocana is blunter still: this consciousness is deep and subtle, and the Buddha does not expound it to the childish, for fear they will hear of it and take it for a self.
It is on this gate, too, that the treatise establishes four parts: the image-part that is known, the seeing-part that knows, the self-witnessing part that knows the seeing-part, and the witnessing-of-self-witnessing that knows the self-witnessing part. The third and fourth witness one another, completing object and knower without an infinite regress; cognition never steps outside the one body of consciousness.
The doctrine of the four parts is established at length here and deserves a further word. The treatise names the positions: Sthiramati one part (self-witnessing); Nanda two (seeing and image); Dignāga three (adding self-witnessing); Dharmapāla four (adding the witnessing of self-witnessing).
Why a fourth? The reason given is plain: the self-witnessing part witnesses the seeing part — then who witnesses the self-witnessing? Without a fourth, self-witnessing has no witness; posit a fifth and the regress has no end. So four and no more — the third and fourth witness each other, and nothing further need be posited.
The structure looks laboured, and answers a very ordinary question: how do you know that you just saw? Not by looking again with the eyes, but by the mind's knowing itself. The four parts are that matter set out plainly.
Concomitance · Feeling · Nature · Ever-Flowing · Relinquishment
This chapter finishes off what remains to be said of the ālaya.
Five mental factors accompany it without fail: contact, attention, feeling, conception, volition — the five omnipresent, present wherever any consciousness arises. Of feelings it has one only: equanimity, neither painful nor pleasant. Which stands to reason: a consciousness too subtle for you to notice would have been noticed long ago had it carried pleasure and pain.
Its moral nature is unobstructed-and-neutral — neither wholesome nor unwholesome, and no veil upon the noble path. It has to be so, since it is the storehouse for the seeds of good and evil alike; a storehouse that took sides could not hold both.
Then the famous line: "ever-turning as a torrent." Seen from a distance a waterfall is a still white sheet, and not one drop of it has ever stopped. Ever, and so not annihilation; turning, and so not permanence — the middle falls between those two words.
And the treatise leaves an exit: "relinquished at the stage of the arhat." This consciousness that is always there is not always there. At that stage it is let go — not annihilated, but stripped of the name by which it was held onto as a self.
The simile "ever-turning as a torrent" is drawn out finely. Two extremes are refuted first: hold this consciousness permanent, and it could not be perfumed, could not alter, and its seeds could neither increase nor diminish; hold it cut off, and before and after would not continue, and act and fruit would have no support. Ever, and so not cut off; turning, and so not permanent.
The torrent takes both senses: the flow does not stop, hence not cut off; the water does not stay, hence not permanent. And a torrent in its very continuity sweeps fish and grasses along — showing that this consciousness, ceasing moment upon moment, still holds seeds and still calls forth fruit.
One layer is added: this consciousness continues not only in its own kind but stands in mutual regard with the first seven — so that "ever-turning" is no solitary stream but the whole floor of mental activity in motion. You take the mind for a series of pictures; underneath, a flow has never once stopped.
Proof of a Distinct Substance · The Five Scriptures · The First Five Reasons
Two chapters on the ālaya, and one question cannot be dodged: you say this consciousness is there, yet it is imperceptible and never felt — on what ground do you say so?
The treatise answers plainly: on two grounds, scripture and reason. Not on experience, since an ordinary being has no experience of it to begin with.
Five scriptural testimonies are given. The two verses of the Mahāyāna Abhidharma Sūtra are the most direct: "the realm beginningless in time, the equal support of all dharmas"; "because it stores all dharmas, the consciousness of all seeds is called the ālaya." The Saṃdhinirmocana says the ādāna consciousness is deep and subtle. The Laṅkāvatāra says the store-consciousness ocean abides constant. The fourth establishes that the Mahāyāna is the Buddha's word — for if that were not granted, the foregoing citations would carry no weight, and so it must be settled first. The fifth is the most striking: the four Āgamas too taught it, covertly, only under other names — the Mahāsāṃghikas called it the root consciousness, the Sthaviras the factor of existence, the Mahīśāsakas the aggregate lasting through birth-and-death. The point is unmistakable: this is not a Mahāyāna invention. Every school had felt for it; none had said it outright.
Ten reasons follow, of which this chapter gives five. The first weighs most: the proof from holding seeds. Wholesome and unwholesome deeds are done, and their fruit often ripens a lifetime later; where do the seeds reside in the interval? The first six consciousnesses break off — in deep sleep, in fainting, in the mindless attainment they stop; the seventh grasps a self unceasingly and holds no seeds. There must therefore be a consciousness unbroken, morally neutral, and able to hold.
The weight of that argument is this: it is not speculation; it is forced by the law of act and fruit. Grant that deeds are not lost, and you must grant somewhere for them to be kept.
Proof of a Distinct Substance · The Latter Five Reasons
The previous chapter gave five reasons; this one gives the latter five. They share a way of taking evidence: they go to the extremes. What shows no difference in ordinary conditions shows itself at the limit.
Six, the mind at birth and death. At the moment of taking birth and of dying, the mind must be a distracted mind; it cannot be one in a mindless attainment. Yet the first six consciousnesses necessarily do not manifest then — who, then, is there? There must be an unbroken consciousness appropriating the body, or there is no mind to speak of at those moments.
Seven, the support of dependent origination. Scripture says consciousness conditions name-and-form and name-and-form conditions consciousness, the two leaning on each other like sheaves of reeds. If that consciousness were one of the first six it would itself fall within name-and-form, and the statement would not hold. It must be the eighth.
Eight, consciousness as nutriment. Among the four nutriments is consciousness, characterized by sustaining and able to maintain a being’s body and life. Consciousness-as-nutriment extends to every contaminated consciousness, not only the eighth. But the seven active consciousnesses are intermittent and subject to change, and so cannot sustain body and life universally and continuously. The eighth, continuing in one class and excelling in sustaining, has the predominant nutriment function.
Nine, consciousness in the attainment of cessation. This is the strongest. One who enters that attainment has all six consciousnesses extinguished, feeling and conception no longer functioning — and yet has not died: the body is still warm, the lifespan still there. Scripture says that in one abiding in cessation, consciousness does not leave the body. Whose is that consciousness?
Ten, the defiled and purified mind. Defiled and purified dharmas alike require a support that holds their seeds. Without the eighth, when one moves between realms and levels an affliction arising after a mind that is merely undefiled, but has not permanently severed that affliction, would have no seed-cause at all. This does not mean that a truly severed affliction rearises. Indeed, the result of severance itself requires the eighth as seed-holder: when the path is present, the affliction-seed to be severed must still have a support so that the path can destroy it permanently and a severance-result can be established. If there were no seed to sever, agent, object, and result of severance could not be established.
With that the ten are full. Looking back, the treatise's method has been of a piece throughout: it never asks you to feel this consciousness. It asks only that you grant this — that without it, the things you have already granted cannot be made to hold together.
The Second Transformer · The Manas (I) · Substance and Aspect · The Four Afflictions
The second transformer is the manas. Its name is deliberation — not ordinary thinking, but constant and examining deliberation: while the defiled manas is manifest, it continuously and minutely measures the eighth consciousness as an “I.”
The treatise settles three things. Its support — "it turns in dependence on that," on the eighth, the ālaya. Its object — "taking that as object," again the eighth; it seizes the seeing-part of the eighth and holds it as a self. Its own-nature and mode — "deliberation is its nature and its mode," nature and mode both being deliberation.
One structural point must be seen clearly: the "I" the manas grasps is in fact the eighth consciousness. It does not fabricate a self out of nothing; it mistakes that unbroken stream of consciousness in the depths for a permanent, single sovereign. Self-grasping is therefore not creation from nothing. It is misidentification.
Then the four afflictions: delusion about self, view of self, conceit of self, love of self. Delusion is not seeing that the self is no self; view is holding it as self; conceit is exalting oneself upon it; love is deep attachment to it. In the ordinary continuity before transformation of the basis, all four arise spontaneously with the defiled manas. But the verse immediately names three exceptions: they are absent in an arhat, in the attainment of cessation, and while the supramundane path is present. The later prose specifies that “the three states without manas” is said of its veiled, defiled mode: an arhat has relinquished that defiled manas permanently, while in cessation attainment and the supramundane path it is temporarily not manifest. “Constant” therefore cannot mean uninterrupted in every state without exception.
The chapter is unsettling to read, and should be. What it says is this: before you are aware of what you are thinking, a mind has already settled on your behalf that there is an "I." Every calculation, comparison, injury and defence of yours is built on a verdict you never agreed to and have never noticed.
And the reason it can be cut is precisely that it is a misidentification — a misidentification can be corrected. Were self-grasping a real thing, there would be no remedy at all.
The Remaining Gates · Feeling · Nature · Realm · Absent in Three States
The four afflictions of the manas were settled in the previous chapter. This one asks finer questions: what other mental factors accompany it? Is it painful, is it pleasant? Is it wholesome or unwholesome? Into which realm does it follow a being? — and last the question that matters: when does it stop?
The answer: it pairs with equanimity alone — neither painful nor pleasant. That is worth pausing over. The mind that grasps at "I" without pause, day and night, is itself level, without emotion. Emotion is the sixth consciousness's business; the manas merely grasps, spontaneously and without a sound.
Its moral nature is obscured-indeterminate — not evil, yet a veil upon the noble path. That is an exact verdict: self-grasping does not show itself by doing wrong; it simply keeps you from seeing what is true.
As for when it stops: at the arhat stage, in the attainment of cessation, and while the supramundane path is present. The first is severance for good; the other two are suppression for a time. So practice is not finished by holding it down — holding it down is one thing, cutting it off is another.
In settling which mental factors accompany the manas, the treatise records five totals in sequence. The first gives nine: the four afflictions and five omnipresent factors. The next gives fifteen by adding five secondary afflictions and wisdom; another gives nineteen; another gives twenty-four. The final, correct view expressly rejects the preceding four as incomplete: defiled mind is necessarily concomitant with eight secondary afflictions, so the manas is accompanied by the prior nine, those eight, and object-specific wisdom—a total of eighteen.
This movement from recording the alternatives to establishing the correct view deserves attention. The earlier positions are not left alongside the conclusion without judgment. The treatise says that they do not exhaust the principle and concludes that eighteen accords with both reasoning and scripture. Faithful transmission preserves both the dispute and the treatise's weighting.
Defiled or Undefiled · The Three Distinctions · Proof of the Seventh
The previous chapter said the manas is "absent" in three states. That forces a question: what is absent — the defiled grasping at self, or the seat of the seventh consciousness entire?
One position: the manas is defiled and nothing else; absent in the three states, it is simply gone. The other — which the treatise takes as settled — says no. Scripture expressly speaks of a supramundane manas; and the treatises say "transforming the seventh consciousness, one gains the knowledge of equality." Were the seventh consciousness gone entire, out of what would that wisdom be transformed? What is cut, then, is its defilement, not its substance.
Hence the manas has three distinctions. Concomitance with personal self-view applies to all ordinary beings, learners of the two vehicles, and one class of bodhisattvas below the eighth ground while their contaminated mind is present. Concomitance with dharma-self-view applies to all ordinary beings, śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and every bodhisattva whenever the result of dharma-emptiness wisdom is not present. Concomitance with the wisdom of equal nature applies to all buddhas and to bodhisattvas on the paths of seeing and cultivation precisely while that result is present. The three cannot be replaced by the rough labels “ordinary beings,” “the two vehicles and those before the grounds,” and “everyone from seeing onward.”
The treatise first gives scriptural proof: mind, mentation, and consciousness as distinct senses; the Laṅkāvatāra gāthā; and the Vimokṣa-sūtra verse. Only at “scriptural authority has been cited; rational principle will now be shown” do the formal six grounds begin.
Here is the weight of the chapter: self-grasping can be cut, and the very consciousness that did the grasping, turned around, is the wisdom of equal-nature. Nothing is destroyed; one and the same thing has changed direction.
The six grounds are these: (1) the subtle, constantly operating non-shared ignorance requires the seventh; (2) because mind-consciousness arises with mentation and dharmas as conditions, it requires an unshared simultaneous support like the five consciousnesses and their faculties; (3) scripture's “cogitating is named mentation” requires a manas that constantly and examiningly cogitates; (4) non-conceptual concentration and cessation-attainment both stop the six consciousnesses, so their distinction requires the defiled manas to be present in one and absent in the other; (5) non-conceptual beings retain self-grasping throughout a life in which the six consciousnesses are long absent; and (6) the ordinary being's wholesome, defiled, and indeterminate minds constantly carry self-grasping, so giving and similar acts do not relinquish marks. These—not the earlier arguments in the defiled-or-undefiled dispute—are the six grounds briefly set out following the Mahāyānasaṃgraha.
The conclusion has a precise scope: in the three states, what is absent is the defiled mentation, while an undefiled mentation remains present. It does not establish a universal rule that every occurrence of “severed,” “relinquished,” or “absent” elsewhere in the treatise means only a change of title while the underlying substance remains. Each passage must be read from its own source context.
The Third Transformer · The Object-Discerning Consciousness · Nature and Aspect · The Three Natures
The third transformer is the first six consciousnesses. The treatise settles first a question that looks minor and is not: how are these six named?
Both modes are valid. They may be named after their faculties—eye-consciousness through mind-consciousness—or after their objects—form-consciousness through dharma-consciousness—because consciousness means discerning an object. Object-based naming, however, applies only while the five material faculties have not attained mastery. Once the faculties function interchangeably and one faculty can engage every object, only faculty-based naming avoids confusion.
Second question: since all eight discern, why is "object-discerning" given to the first six alone? Because discernment is coarse or fine. The eighth takes its object too subtly; the seventh deliberates constantly and does not discern coarse objects; only the first six discern what is coarse and evident. "Object-discernment is its nature and mode" names them by that portion — coarse and evident discernment — not by denying that the others discern at all.
Third question: which of the three moral natures do the first six run through? All three—wholesome, unwholesome, and neutral. Before transformation of the basis, the eighth is neutral and the seventh, while concomitant with personal or dharma self-grasping, is obscured-neutral. The first six may run through all three; at attained mastery, they are wholesome alone.
Which means: this is where deeds are done. The eighth is a storehouse and only receives perfuming; the seventh grasps a self unceasingly and is the root of defilement but performs no wholesome or unwholesome deed; what actually does good and evil, and can turn the direction of a life, is the first six.
Practice therefore does not rest on an inability to affect seeds already stored. The source expressly says that at attained mastery the seeds of conceptual proliferation have been permanently extinguished. This chapter's direct point is that wholesome, unwholesome, and neutral activity unfolds through the first six consciousnesses, and practice works with these present activities.
The Six Classes of Mental Factors · General Statement · The Three Feelings · The Omnipresent · The Object-Specific
What is a mental factor? A dharma belonging to the mind-king, arising concomitant with him. The treatise states the six classes first: five omnipresent, five object-specific, eleven wholesome, six afflictions, twenty secondary afflictions, four indeterminate.
Then a matter easily skipped that is in fact the frame: concomitance. For mind-king and factor to be concomitant, four conditions must hold — same support, same object, similar mode, and each a single instance. Those four are the criterion; what fails them is not a mental factor but something else.
Next, the three feelings. The six consciousnesses pair with painful, pleasant and neutral feeling; divided finer, sorrow and joy are added, making five. One detail is worth a pause: feeling is not emotion. Feeling is that portion of function which takes in the agreeable and disagreeable; emotion comes after.
The five omnipresent—contact, attention, feeling, conception, and volition. Why omnipresent? Because they pervade every mind, every moment, every stage, and every moral nature: whenever a consciousness arises, all five are present together. They are not five successive steps. Scripture says that feeling, conception, and volition arise together with contact, and that attention and discernment are constantly conjoined. The five names distinguish concurrent functions within one arising of mind: contact brings the three together; attention directs mind to its object; feeling receives; conception delimits the object; and volition makes mind act.
The five object-specific — aspiration, resolve, mindfulness, concentration, wisdom. These do not pervade; each takes its own object: aspiration toward what is desired, resolve upon what is settled, mindfulness on what was formerly practised, concentration and wisdom upon what is contemplated.
The most useful observation here is that attention stands among the omnipresent. Attention is not a tool you pick up now and then; it is a necessary constituent of every mental act whatsoever. When practice speaks of gathering the mind, this is the member it gathers.
善十一The Six Classes of Mental Factors · The Eleven Wholesome
Eleven wholesome factors: faith, shame, embarrassment, non-greed, non-hatred, non-delusion, energy, pliancy, heedfulness, equanimity of practice, non-harming.
Faith is listed first among the eleven wholesome factors. Its definition is distinctive: “toward the real, the excellent, and the capable—deep acceptance, delight, and aspiration; its nature is the clarification of mind.” Faith in the real deeply accepts the facts and principles of dharmas. Faith in excellence delights in the truly pure virtues of the Three Jewels. Faith in capacity trusts that all worldly and supramundane wholesome dharmas possess power to attain their fruits and accomplish their work, and therefore gives rise to aspiration. The object is not replaced by “faith that I can do it.” Faith's own nature is clarification of mind, like a water-clearing gem clarifying muddy water; it counters non-faith and inclines the mind toward cultivating and realizing worldly and supramundane good.
Shame and embarrassment are a pair: shame draws on oneself and the teaching, honouring the worthy and good; embarrassment draws on the world's regard, recoiling from the coarse and evil. One faces inward, one outward.
Non-greed, non-hatred, non-delusion are called the three wholesome roots, since they counteract the three unwholesome roots and every good grows from them.
Energy has five marks: donning armour, application, no lowering, no retreat, no complacency — a full curve of effort from first resolve to never being satisfied.
Pliancy deserves notice: it exists only in the concentrated state, removing grossness and making body and mind supple. In a distracted mind there is no pliancy at all.
The treatise then sorts real from provisional: of the eleven, heedfulness, equanimity of practice and non-harming are provisionally established — heedfulness being just energy and the three roots at their work of guarding and cultivating; equanimity being those four keeping the mind level, upright and effortless; non-harming being non-hatred not injuring beings. The other eight are real.
That sorting is no pedantry. It says: you need not go off and cultivate heedfulness separately. Cultivate energy and the three roots well, and heedfulness is already there. Where to apply oneself becomes, with that, clear.
The Six Classes of Mental Factors · The Six Root Afflictions
Six root afflictions: greed, hatred, delusion, conceit, doubt, and wrong view. The first five are familiar by name; it is the last on which the treatise really bears down.
The first five briefly. Greed clings to existence and its means; hatred resents suffering and its means; delusion is darkness about principle and fact; conceit exalts oneself over others, in seven finer kinds; doubt hesitates over the truths.
The treatise sorts their concomitance, and the sorting repays reading: greed does not arise together with hatred or doubt — love and loathing take different objects, and one clinging does not at the same moment hesitate. Such fineness is not fussiness; it is a description of how a mind actually runs.
Wrong view divides into five: the view of a real personality (grasping I and mine), the view seizing extremes (annihilation or eternity), the false view (denying cause and effect), the view exalting views (holding one's own view supreme), and the view exalting rules and observances (taking what is not a cause for a cause, what is not the path for the path).
Of the five, the view of a real personality is the root; the other four issue from it. And the view exalting rules and observances deserves a modern reader's attention: to take what is not a cause of liberation for its cause, what is not the path for the path. This is not confined to the austerities of other schools; wherever a form is taken for the end itself, this view is at work.
Last, the treatise sorts severance: severed by seeing, severed by cultivation. Discriminated afflictions (arising from wrong teaching and wrong reflection) are severed at the path of seeing; innate ones (arising spontaneously from beginningless time) are severed gradually on the path of cultivation. Doubt and three of the views are discriminated only, and go entire at seeing; greed, hatred, delusion, conceit, and the views of personality and of extremes run also as innate.
The practical force of that table is this: greed and hatred still arise after the path of seeing, and that is not backsliding — it is the innate layer, still there. Knowing it, one does not lose heart at finding oneself unchanged.
The Twenty Secondary Afflictions
There are six root afflictions: greed, hatred, delusion, conceit, doubt, and wrong view. The treatise also lists twenty secondary afflictions: rage, enmity, concealment, vexation, envy, avarice, deceit, dissembling, harmfulness, arrogance, shamelessness, non-embarrassment, restlessness, torpor, faithlessness, indolence, heedlessness, forgetfulness, distraction, and non-vigilance.
“Secondary” explains that they are established as modal differentiations or outflows of the root afflictions. It does not mean that none has a distinct substance. The provisional-real gate is explicit: the lesser ten and, among the greater group, heedlessness, forgetfulness, and non-vigilance are definitely provisional; shamelessness, non-embarrassment, faithlessness, and indolence are definitely real; restlessness, torpor, and distraction each remain disputed as provisional or real.
A separate classification concerns range of arising. The lesser ten arise singly; the middling two—shamelessness and non-embarrassment—pervade every unwholesome mind; the greater eight pervade every defiled mind. These are different criteria and must not be collapsed into the claim that all twenty are merely other names for the roots.
In practice, the coarse lesser afflictions are easier to notice, while the greater group that pervades defiled mind demands finer observation. The treatise first asks us to distinguish each factor's status and range before speaking of its counteraction.
The Four Indeterminate · Summary of the Six Classes
The last of the six classes is called indeterminate. Why indeterminate? Because the character of the other five is already fixed: the omnipresent are always present, the eleven wholesome are always wholesome, the afflictions are always defiled. These four are not. Regret, drowsiness, applied thought, and sustained thought extend through wholesome, defiled, and neutral states, and definitely pervade neither every mind nor every stage; hence their name “indeterminate.”
Regret can be chagrin at having done good (defiled) or remorse for having done wrong (wholesome). Drowsiness can be defiled, wholesome, or neutral. Applied thought deliberates coarsely upon a mental-speech object; sustained thought deliberates finely. These two likewise extend through both defiled and undefiled states.
“Two, each in two,” says the verse: one pair is regret and drowsiness, the other applied and sustained thought; both pairs extend through defiled and undefiled states.
The six classes complete, the treatise closes with a question that goes to the root: do these mental factors possess their own natures apart from mind, or are they merely modes of mind itself? If they were merely modes of mind, “association” could not be established: association is between things of different natures, not a self-nature associated with itself.
The correct view is this: conventionally, mental factors possess distinct own-natures apart from mind. Because mind is dominant and the mental factors arise through its force, the teaching speaks of consciousness-only and of the factors appearing like mind; this does not make them mind itself. Ultimately, mental factors and mind are neither separate nor identical. Consciousness-only does not erase their conventional distinction, nor does it reify ultimate separateness or identity.
Five Consciousnesses Arising · The Five Mindless States
The first five consciousnesses — eye, ear, nose, tongue, body — are not switched on all the time. The treatise uses a very concrete simile: they are like waves on water. A wave does not rise of itself; it needs the water (the root consciousness), it needs wind (the outer object), it needs attention and a faculty. When the conditions gather, one rises; when they do not, it sinks back. Hence "together or not together" — sometimes all five appear at once, sometimes not one of them.
The sixth, the mind-consciousness, is different: it almost never stops. But there are five states in which it does — birth in the Heaven of No-Thought, the attainment of no-thought, the attainment of cessation, deep dreamless sleep, and fainting. Outside those five, it runs on.
This chapter is not speculative. It simply counts out, one by one, when the mind is present. And the counting has a use: what practice works on is precisely that mind-consciousness which "almost never stops," together with those surface consciousnesses that stop at the least provocation — knowing which can be stilled and which cannot is what keeps the path honest.
In sorting the five mindless states the treatise also counts how many fall to each class of being: ordinary beings have four, lacking only the attainment of cessation; noble ones have only the latter three — the attainment of cessation, extremely heavy sleep, and fainting. Among them, tathāgatas and autonomous bodhisattvas have neither sleep nor fainting, so of the five they have only the attainment of cessation.
The table repays a glance: although all five are called “mindless,” birth in the Heaven of No-Thought, the no-thought attainment, the cessation attainment, extremely heavy sleep, and fainting differ in cause and status. Only noble ones enter cessation attainment, and tathāgatas and autonomous bodhisattvas may also manifest it. The point is not that a stopped mind is better, but that one must distinguish an effect of maturation, an attainment, and a bodily state.
The Eight Turning Together · Consciousness-Transformation Resolved
The eight consciousnesses can turn at the same time — not taking turns in a queue, but lit together like several lamps. Are they one or many? The treatise answers carefully: spoken of conventionally, by their characteristics, the eight are indeed distinct; spoken of truly, neither characteristic nor the thing characterised can be found, and so there is no distinction. That is not evasion; it is layering.
Then comes the load-bearing line of the whole treatise: "These consciousnesses transform; there is that which discriminates and that which is discriminated." The moment a consciousness arises, it puts out two ends of itself — the end that knows (the seeing part) and the end that is known (the image part). You take it that something outside has been seen by you; in fact one consciousness has produced both sides, and then this side takes that side as its object.
Since both the grasper and the grasped are the consciousness's own transformation, a self and dharmas standing outside consciousness are simply not to be found — "and because of this, those are absent; therefore all is consciousness-only."
With that, "clarifying the character of consciousness-only" is complete. The character having been made clear, the next question can be asked: what is its nature?
In expounding "the transformation of consciousness" the treatise also records a second reading: following the Mahāyānasaṃgraha, "only" excludes the outer object and "two" shows that within consciousness there is a grasper and a grasped. Two readings set side by side and neither adjudicated — the manner of this treatise throughout.
A stretch of question and answer also repays notice. If external forms appear plainly before direct perception, how can they be denied as realities outside consciousness? The treatise answers that at the moment of direct perception they are not grasped as external; only afterward does conceptual mind falsely imagine externality. The form seen is not external but appears external, like an object in a dream. Before waking one does not know that the dream-object is mind-only; before true awakening, beings likewise cannot know for themselves that the forms before them are consciousness-only.
Resolving Objections Contrary to Principle · Cause and Effect (I)
With "clarifying the character" this far advanced, the treatise begins to answer objections. The first is the most direct: if there is no outer object, whence arise the manifold discriminations? With nothing outside to strike the mind, on what does it produce so many different cognitions?
The answer is verse 18: "From the consciousness of all seeds, transforming thus and thus, and through the force of mutual influence, this and that discrimination arises." Two things, taken apart:
First, seeds. The eighth consciousness holds the seeds of all dharmas; the seeds differ one from another, and in manifesting they transform "thus and thus" — difference does not come from an outer object but from difference in the seeds themselves. That this thought arises in you and not that one is because it is this seed you carry.
Second, the force of mutual influence. Consciousness conditions consciousness and strengthens it. The manifest activity of the first six perfumes seeds; seeds produce activity again; this consciousness affects that, and that affects this in return. In that interplay, difference is continually magnified.
The treatise then lays out the whole account of causation, the most systematic stretch in the book: the four conditions (causal, immediately antecedent, objective support, dominant); the ten causes (of designation, of dependence, of attraction, of production, of maintenance, of eliciting, of determination, of joint action, of contrariety, of non-contrariety); the twenty-two faculties; the five fruits (maturation, outflow, disjunction, human effort, dominance).
The stretch is often taken for a heap of terms. It is doing one thing: taking the word "causation" apart until it can be taken apart no further, and showing that consciousness-only not only does not deny causation but establishes it better than any doctrine of outer objects. For that doctrine cannot explain why the same object meets with two different responses.
The answer here is short — the object is the same; the seeds are not.
Resolving Objections Contrary to Principle · Cause and Effect (II)
The second objection: with no outer condition, how does a being's birth-and-death continue? When one life ends, on what does the next take hold?
The answer is verse 19: “By the habit-energies of deeds, together with the habit-energies of the twofold grasping — the former maturation exhausted, a further maturation is produced.” Everything turns on the remote and intimate causal roles of the deed-seeds and the twofold-grasping-seeds.
The first account: the habit-energy of deeds is the capacity perfumed by meritorious, non-meritorious, and imperturbable deeds. On ripening it calls forth the maturation fruit and serves as that future fruit’s outstanding dominant condition. The habit-energy of twofold grasping includes image and seeing, name and form, mind and mental factors, root and branch — the grasped and grasper in each pair. The capacities they perfume into the root consciousness directly produce the future maturation mind and its associated factors: these are their causal seeds. The verse’s “together” therefore joins a remote condition, the deed-seeds, to an intimate condition, the twofold-grasping-seeds.
The second account: when habit-energy is divided into designation, self-grasping, and existence-link habit-energies, the deed-habit-energy is the existence-link habit-energy, while twofold-grasping habit-energy comprises self-grasping and designation habit-energies. Designation habit-energies are the direct causal seeds of their respective conditioned dharmas; self-grasping habit-energy produces distinctions of self and other only as a dominant condition.
The third account: when the three habit-energies are affliction, deed, and suffering, affliction and suffering correspond to “twofold grasping” — affliction as grasper and suffering as grasped — while deed is not called grasping. Affliction and deed are dominant conditions for the suffering of birth-and-death; the suffering habit-energy is the cause-condition that directly produces that suffering.
When one maturation is exhausted, a later set of deed-seeds and intimate causal seeds ripens and produces a further maturation. All three accounts preserve the same causal order: deed-habit-energy assists in calling forth the fruit, while the intimate seeds included under twofold grasping directly produce it; continuity requires no condition outside consciousness.
The treatise then fits the twelve links onto this frame — ignorance, formations, consciousness, name-and-form, the six entrances, contact, feeling, craving, grasping, becoming, birth, old-age-and-death — and distinguishes two kinds of birth-and-death: sectioned (of ordinary beings and the two vehicles, life after bounded life) and transformational (of noble ones past the sectioned kind, taken on by the power of compassion and vow, with no fixed term).
There is a warmth in this chapter that is easy to miss. The treatise is not doing metaphysics. It is saying: the situation of this life of yours was called forth by your own habit-energies; no one arranged it. And since habit-energy called it forth, habit-energy can be turned — so that the very continuity of birth-and-death carries within it the possibility of release.
If birth-and-death ran on outer conditions, you could only wait. Running on habit-energy, you can practise.
Resolving Objections Contrary to Scripture · The Three Natures
The three natures are the central coordinates of this system: the wholly imagined, the other-dependent, and the perfectly accomplished.
The other-dependent is the ground: every conditioned dharma arises from a gathering of conditions, and not one springs up of itself. Your seeing and hearing at this moment are other-dependent.
The wholly imagined is what is laid on top: upon the other-dependent, a real self and real dharmas are falsely reckoned. A rope is seen and taken for a snake — the snake is the wholly imagined. The verse says: "by this and that imagining, all manner of things are imagined; this wholly imagined has no own-being at all." What is imagined is, in the end, absent.
The perfectly accomplished is how things have always stood: the reality disclosed when the wholly imagined is removed from the other-dependent. Not a further thing — the same other-dependent, with the misreading taken away.
The relation among the three is drawn with great care. The perfectly accomplished and the other-dependent are "neither different nor not different." Were they different, suchness and dharmas would fall into two halves and realizing suchness would have nothing to do with dharmas. Were they not different, suchness would arise and cease. Hence neither — as impermanence stands to what is impermanent.
One discrimination here is essential: of the three, only the wholly imagined is absent; neither the other-dependent nor the perfectly accomplished is. Consciousness-only does not say that nothing is there. It says that the layer you added is not.
The rope is the easiest to hold: the rope is other-dependent (made of conditions, present); the snake is wholly imagined (wholly absent); the rope's being hemp is the perfectly accomplished (how it always was). The snake you feared was never there — and the rope has been there all along.
Practice does not destroy the rope. It stops seeing it as a snake.
Resolving Objections Contrary to Scripture · The Three Non-Natures
No sooner are the three natures established than a difficulty arrives: scripture plainly says all dharmas are without own-being; you establish three natures — do you not contradict the teaching?
The reply is verses 23 and 24: "In dependence on these three natures, those three non-natures are established; hence with hidden intent the Buddha said that all dharmas are without nature." Everything turns on hidden intent — the Buddha's saying was aimed at something, not a blanket denial.
The three non-natures rest on the three natures.
Non-nature of characteristic rests on the wholly imagined: what is imagined is finally absent, and so it is said to be without nature. This one is genuine absence.
Non-nature of production rests on the other-dependent: an other-dependent dharma arises through conditions and is not there of itself, so it is said to be without a nature of its own arising. Note: not that the other-dependent is absent, but that it has no such nature as existing of itself.
Non-nature in the ultimate sense rests on the perfectly accomplished: it is the ultimate of dharmas, disclosed by departing from the imagined natures of self and dharmas — and it is said to be without nature just in respect of that departure.
So of the three non-natures only the first is sheer absence; the other two are absence of a certain nature, not absence. The Buddha's hidden intent lies here: what he broke was the own-being you had imagined, not everything whatsoever.
The treatise gives a warning: "in saying hidden intent, it shows the statement is not of definitive meaning." To meet "all dharmas are without own-being" and take it as a blanket denial is to fall into a wrong grasp of emptiness. The childish superimpose upon the latter two natures, and so the Buddha spoke of absence; if one thereupon denies the other-dependent and the perfectly accomplished, the disease is worse than the one first treated.
This is among the places in the whole treatise most needing care: emptiness taken too little is grasping at existence; taken too far it is annihilation. The middle lies between those two sentences.
The True Nature of Consciousness-Only · Suchness
From the first verse to this point the treatise has been clarifying the character of consciousness-only — how consciousness transforms, into what, and why those aspects are not real. This chapter has one verse only, and it is a turn: the character is done; now the nature.
Verse 25: "This is the ultimate of all dharmas, and it is suchness; because it is constantly thus in its nature, it is the true reality of consciousness-only."
Four senses of ultimate are distinguished first: worldly (aggregates, bases, elements), reasoned (the four noble truths), realized (the suchness of the two emptinesses), and ultimate ultimate (the one true dharma-realm). What is meant here is the last.
Then the word suchness: true, meaning real, showing it is not false; such, meaning constantly so, showing it does not alter. Together: real and unaltering, constantly thus in its nature through every state.
The words "and it is" carry intent: they say that the ultimate of dharmas and suchness are not two things.
The closing phrase, "the true reality of consciousness-only," is the hinge of the whole treatise: suchness is the true reality of consciousness-only. It must be read with care — it does not say suchness is consciousness, nor that consciousness is suchness. The distinction is drawn plainly: the nature of consciousness-only is twofold — a false nature, which is the wholly imagined, and a true one, which is the perfectly accomplished. What is spoken of here is the latter.
This one verse stands as its own chapter because it answers the question that was bound to come: after all this talk of consciousness transforming, is anything real at all?
Yes. The true reality of consciousness — not outside consciousness, and not consciousness itself, but the reality disclosed when consciousness has departed from what it imagined.
With that, clarifying the character ends, and clarifying the stages begins — how the road is walked.
The Stage of Provisions
The stages of consciousness-only open here. A general statement comes first: who can enter? how many stages? how is entry made?
Who — one possessing the two Mahāyāna lineages, the innate and the developed. How many — five: provisions, applied practice, penetrating comprehension, cultivation, the ultimate. How — regarding the character and nature of consciousness: at provisions, deep conviction; at applied practice, the gradual subduing of grasper and grasped; at penetrating comprehension, penetration as it is; at cultivation, repeated practice subduing and severing the remaining obstructions; at the ultimate, emergence from obstruction into full clarity.
This chapter treats the first: the stage of provisions.
Verse 26: "So long as consciousness has not arisen that seeks to abide in the nature of consciousness-only, the latent tendencies of the twofold grasping cannot yet be subdued or extinguished." In reading it, hold on to "cannot yet" — this stage is defined by what has not yet been done.
The bodhisattva here believes deeply in the principle, raises the great resolve, and cultivates the two provisions of merit and wisdom — yet still cannot subdue the latent tendencies of grasper and grasped. Some coarse manifestations of the two graspings may already be subdued; subtle manifestations and the two latent tendencies cannot yet be suppressed or extinguished, because the powers of calming and contemplation remain weak.
The treatise names four powers on which this stage relies: cause, the good friend, attention, and provisions. It also gives three discouragements and three trainings of the mind. When the vastness of awakening makes one shrink, one recalls others who have already realized great awakening. When giving and the other perfections seem too difficult, one examines one's own resolve and sees that one can practise them. When the buddhas' perfect turning of the basis seems impossible, one reflects that others' coarse goodness can bear fruit and so takes courage in one's own sublime causes.
The metaphor of "provisions" is honest: for a long journey you carry food. You have not set out yet; first fill the packs — merit and wisdom, neither to be short.
It is the stage most easily slighted, and the longest. Opening the stage of applied practice, the treatise looks back: the bodhisattva has "first, through the initial incalculable aeon, fully provisioned merit and wisdom" — a whole incalculable aeon, spent here. So if someone has stood here a long while and feels nothing is moving, that is not failure. That is what this stage looks like.
加行位The Stage of Applied Practice
Provisions laid in, next comes applied practice. Its mark is this: the method is already right, and one step is still wanting.
Verse 27: "Setting up some slight thing before oneself and calling it the nature of consciousness-only — because there is still attainment, one does not truly abide in consciousness-only." Mark the words "does not truly abide." The bodhisattva here is already contemplating consciousness-only, and still sets up a "slight thing," still has an attainment; and so he does not yet abide in that nature.
What is cultivated is the four searches and the four knowledges of things as they are. The four searches: searching out name, referent, own-being and differentiation, and seeing each to be merely posited. The four knowledges: through that searching, knowing as it is that all four cannot be found.
Four positions correspond: heat, summit, forbearance, and the supreme mundane dharma.
Heat — resting on the concentration of gained clarity, contemplating the emptiness of the grasped. Summit — on the concentration of increased clarity, that emptiness grown plainer. Forbearance — on the concentration of assenting conformity, the emptiness of the grasped now accepted, and the emptiness of the grasper beginning to be contemplated. Supreme mundane dharma — on the concentration without interval, grasper and grasped both empty; immediately upon this the path of seeing is entered, and among mundane dharmas it stands first, whence its name.
One clear line runs through the four: first empty the grasped, then the grasper. To let go of "the things outside are real" is comparatively easy; to let go of "there is an I doing the knowing" is very hard.
And what keeps applied practice from truly abiding is just this: it contemplates emptiness rather than realizing it. Contemplation still sets knower against known — there is an I contemplating that emptiness. Only when contemplator and contemplated alike subside is the path seen.
This chapter describes the predicament every serious practitioner knows: the doctrine wholly understood, the method wholly right, and no way in. The treatise's answer is not to try harder. It is to point out that you are still carrying an attainment — and that attainment is the last gate.
The Stage of Penetrating Comprehension · True and Subsequent Seeing
Applied practice still has an attainment; seeing the path is the letting go of just that.
Verse 28: "When, regarding its object, knowledge attains nothing at all, then one abides in consciousness-only, for the marks of the twofold grasping are gone." — "Knowledge attains nothing at all" is the seeing of the path. Not that something is gained; that all gaining falls away.
The treatise distinguishes true seeing from subsequent seeing.
True seeing: fundamental non-discriminating knowledge directly realizes the suchness disclosed by the two emptinesses; grasper and grasped alike subside. Its work is completed only through multiple instants; because the mode remains equal throughout, the treatise gathers it under the name "one mind." There is no discrimination then, whence the name non-discriminating knowledge — not that knowledge is absent, but that suchness is directly realized without the marks of grasper and grasped appearing.
Subsequent seeing: after true seeing, the subsequently attained knowledge arises and sets out what was realized in various ways — by three minds (dispelling inwardly the provisional being, the provisional dharmas, and all of both), or by sixteen (under each of the four truths, forbearance and knowledge of dharma, forbearance and knowledge of kind). Subsequent seeing bears marks and discriminates, but its discrimination follows upon true seeing and is not false grasping.
Their relation: true seeing is actual realization; subsequent seeing is a contemplative sequence modelled on true seeing. Although true seeing is collectively called one mind, its work requires multiple instants; subsequent seeing employs three minds or sixteen to contemplate the differentiated functions of what true seeing realizes and severs.
Seeing the path is entry to the first ground, the Joyous; the discriminated portion of the two obstructions is severed and the all-pervading suchness realized. What is severed here is the discriminated only; the innate remains — and so seeing the path is not the end but the beginning of cultivation.
The line that matters is "knowledge attains nothing at all." Here practice reverses: everything before was a seeking to gain, and here attaining nothing is itself the realization. Wherever there is attainment, knower and known have not subsided; and where they have not subsided, the path has not been seen.
The Stage of Cultivation · The Ten Grounds · The Ten Perfections
Seeing the path is only the entrance. In the moment of true seeing, knowledge attains nothing at all — yet the seeds of obstruction remain, and so there is still walking to do. That stretch of walking is the stage of cultivation.
The treatise takes it apart into two things.
The first is position: the ten grounds. From the first, Joyous, to the tenth, Cloud of Dharma, these are not ten titles merely; each ground realizes its own portion of suchness and severs its own tier of obstruction. Why is the first called Joyous? Because there the noble nature is first realized and one can benefit self and other, and great joy arises — every ground is named in just this way, from what it realizes and what it severs. Nothing here is arranged for symmetry.
The second is practice: the ten supreme practices, that is, the ten perfections. The first six are familiar — giving, discipline, patience, energy, meditation, wisdom; the latter four — skilful means, vow, power, knowledge — open out of wisdom and assist the first six to increase. Nor is it that each ground simply pairs off with one perfection: the treatise is explicit that every ground cultivates all ten, one of them merely predominating there.
The most practical line of this chapter is hidden here: cultivation does not arrive once; it is the same thing done ten times over, each time finer than the last. The ten grounds are not ten steps you climb; they are one road, on which your wisdom grows keen ten times.
The Stage of Cultivation · The Ten Obstructions · The Ten Suchnesses
The previous chapter gave position and practice; this one gives what is severed and what is realized.
Each of the ten grounds severs one obstruction, and the treatise lists ten: the obstruction of the ordinary nature, of wrong conduct, of dullness, of the arising of subtle affliction … down to the last, the obstruction of not yet having mastery among all dharmas. The names need not be memorised; what to watch is their direction — finer the further one goes. What the first ground severs is the state of an ordinary being, which is coarse; what the tenth severs is a want of mastery among all dharmas, by then so fine that it is no longer affliction at all, only a want of freedom.
Corresponding to these, each ground realizes one portion of suchness: the all-pervading, the supreme, the excellent-outflow … down at last to the suchness that is the support of mastery over action and the rest.
And here one line must be said: suchness itself does not come in ten. Its nature is truly undifferentiated; ten names are provisionally established according to the distinctive excellence realized at each ground. Although the first ground already penetrates all suchness, the practice that realizes it is not yet complete, and so the later grounds are established in sequence.
Obstruction is not suchness, and severing delusion and realizing cessation have distinct aims. Ordinarily the uninterrupted path first severs the obstructing seed; the path of liberation then casts off its remaining incapacity and realizes the corresponding cessation. Yet a sharp-facultied bodhisattva in gradual severance need not always raise the two paths separately and may sever and realize from instant to instant. The two must not be collapsed into one substance, nor the path reduced to a single fixed tempo.
The Stage of Cultivation (II) · The Transformation of the Basis
The heart of the stage of cultivation is the turning of the basis. Take the phrase apart: turning is turning away and turning toward; there are two bases — the root consciousness as the basis that holds seeds, and suchness as the basis of delusion and awakening.
Six positions of turning are established first. The first four follow the stages of practice from shallow to deep; the last two form a vehicle-pair, contrasting the two vehicles with the Great Vehicle:
One, turning that lessens force and strengthens capacity — at provisions and applied practice, by cultivating conviction, shame and embarrassment, the force of defiled seeds in the root consciousness is lessened and the capacity of pure seeds strengthened. Two, turning of penetration — at penetrating comprehension, realizing the principle disclosed by the two emptinesses. Three, turning of cultivation — repeated practice severing the remaining obstructions. Four, turning of perfect fruition — at the ultimate stage, obstruction spent and virtue complete. Five, the inferior turning — what the two vehicles obtain, turning the afflictive obstruction only. Six, the vast turning — what the Great Vehicle obtains, both obstructions turned.
Then the four senses of turning, the structure of the act itself:
The path that turns — by what: the path that subdues and the path that severs. The basis turned upon — upon what: the basis holding seeds (the eighth consciousness) and the basis of delusion-and-awakening (suchness). What is turned away — what is let go: what is severed (the seeds of the two obstructions) and what is discarded (defiled inferior dharmas). What is turned to — what is won: what is disclosed (great nirvāṇa) and what is produced (great awakening).
Of the four, the basis turned upon repays a pause. The two bases must not be collapsed into one mind. The root consciousness holds the seeds of both defiled and purified dharmas and is therefore the seed-holding basis; suchness is the root of both delusion and awakening and is therefore their basis. The noble path causes each, in its own sense, to cast off defilement and attain purity.
Turning is not merely a change of direction. The seeds of the two obstructions, which are severed and cast off, are extinguished when the true uninterrupted path appears and are never again established. The defiled and inferior undefiled dharmas that are discarded never arise again once relinquished. Turning the basis includes both casting off defilement and attaining purity; its actual severing and relinquishment cannot be erased.
It is therefore not accurate to say that the present disordered mind remains unchanged as a buddha's knowledge. What is to be severed is severed forever and what is discarded no longer arises; only through this are great nirvāṇa disclosed and great awakening produced.
The Stage of Cultivation (III) · What Is Won · The Four Knowledges
The turning of the basis established, the treatise settles what is turned to — what practice actually gains. Two fruits: what is disclosed, and what is produced.
What is disclosed is great nirvāṇa. The word disclosed matters: nirvāṇa is not a new thing produced by cultivation; it is there already, veiled, and stands forth when the veil is gone. Four nirvāṇas are established:
Nirvāṇa of intrinsic purity from the first — possessed by every sentient being, suchness pure in its own nature, pure in nature though adventitious defilement clings. Nirvāṇa with remainder — obstruction severed, the body that is the basis of suffering still present. Nirvāṇa without remainder — that basis too exhausted. Nirvāṇa of no fixed abode — with great compassion and wisdom ever attending, abiding neither in birth-and-death nor in nirvāṇa, benefiting beings to the end of time.
Of the four, the first every ordinary being already has, and the fourth belongs to buddhas alone. The difference between an ordinary being and a buddha is not whether there is nirvāṇa but whether it stands disclosed.
What is produced is great awakening — the four knowledge-associated mind-groups. The treatise explains them in sequence as obtained by transforming on the basis of the contaminated mind-groups associated with the eighth, seventh, sixth, and first five consciousnesses:
The great mirror knowledge (turning the eighth) — as a great round mirror shows all images, holding the seeds of every excellence. The knowledge of equal nature (the seventh) — seeing self and other wholly equal, and raising great compassion. The knowledge of wondrous discernment (the sixth) — discerning well the particular and general characters of dharmas, teaching and cutting doubt. The knowledge of accomplishing what is to be done (the first five) — accomplishing what the original vow requires, manifesting in body, speech and mind for beings' welfare.
The correspondence between the four knowledge-associated groups and the consciousness-groups is one of the treatise's most exact structures. Great mirror knowledge transforms on the basis of the eighth-consciousness group; equality knowledge on the seventh; wondrous discernment on the sixth; accomplishing knowledge on the first five. The knowledges transform in dependence on consciousness; knowledge is not itself consciousness.
The treatise says that "although knowledge is not consciousness, it transforms in dependence on consciousness," and that the formula of turning the eight consciousnesses into four knowledges is taught to encourage beings to "rely on knowledge and relinquish consciousness." Knowledge and consciousness are not unrelated, but neither do all eight consciousnesses remain in place unchanged.
The Ultimate Stage · The Dharma-Body · The Three Bodies
The last verse of the treatise gives the ultimate stage.
Verse 30: "This is the uncontaminated realm, inconceivable, wholesome, constant; the blissful body of liberation, called the Dharma of the Great Sage." Expounding it word by word, the treatise draws out five properties of buddhahood:
Uncontaminated — every contaminant forever spent, no contaminant increasing. Inconceivable — beyond the reach of thought and speech, subtle and profound, realized inwardly. Wholesome — of the nature of bright dharmas, the pure dharma-realm and the four knowledges alike being gathered under the wholesome. Constant — without term; the dharma-body neither arises nor ceases, and the other two bodies, resting on it, are unbroken. Blissful — without oppression, and able to give ease to all beings.
Then the three bodies:
The body of own-nature (dharma-body) — the truly pure dharma-realm of all tathāgatas, the equal support of the enjoyment and transformation bodies, free of marks, still, beyond all elaboration. The enjoyment body, of two kinds: self-enjoyment, ever enjoying for itself the vast bliss of Dharma; enjoyment for others, manifesting great powers for bodhisattvas of the ten grounds and turning the wheel of the true Dharma, that they may enjoy the bliss of the Great Vehicle's Dharma. The transformation body — manifesting as is fitting for bodhisattvas below the grounds, for the two vehicles and for ordinary beings, teaching for their welfare.
Their relation must be seen: the dharma-body is substance, the other two are function; function is not apart from substance, and substance does not obstruct function. A buddha has not left this world for somewhere else; the dharma-body abides constant and manifests as occasion calls.
The verse ends, "called the Dharma of the Great Sage" — the greatly silent one is named the dharma-body. Sage here renders muni, silence.** That the last word falls on stillness is striking: ten fascicles of consciousness transforming, seeds, afflictions and stages, and the close is one word — still.
This chapter is the fruit of the whole treatise. Everything refuted and established before was to arrive here; and arriving, one finds that what is uncontaminated, inconceivable, wholesome, constant and blissful is nowhere else — it is the mind that was always there, once the veils are gone.
Concluding Interpretation and Dedication
The treatise closes. Its title is accounted for in a sentence: "This treatise, in three divisions, establishes consciousness-only; therefore it is called the Cheng Weishi Lun."
The three divisions are those of Kuiji's outline: the prefatory homage division, the division of full establishment on scripture, the concluding dedication division. Together they establish consciousness-only, and hence the name. "Establish" means to prove, not to finish. The treatise does not describe consciousness-only; it argues it — from the first verse refuting the graspings at self and dharmas to the thirtieth setting out the three bodies of buddhahood, every step an argument.
After the close come the ascription of merit and the dedication. The author ascribes the merit of composition to the Buddha and the masters, claiming none of it, and dedicates that merit to all beings, that together they may accomplish the buddha-path. The form is standard in Indian treatises; read after ten fascicles it carries a different weight: ten fascicles of argument, and at the end he says it is not his.
Appended at the end is the postface by Shen Xuanming of the Tang. It is not a treatise but a record from the scene of the translation: Xuanzang's journey west in search of the Dharma, the course of the blended translation of the ten commentaries, and why Kuiji asked that they be "welded into one, with Dharmapāla's as the settled sense." Without that postface we should not know how this book came to be.
Reading this far, one can look back at the treatise's road: first refuting what you took to be real (self, dharmas); then establishing what transforms (the three transformers); then answering what you were bound to ask (causation, birth-and-death, the three natures); then pointing to what is real (the nature of consciousness-only); then laying out the road (the five stages) and telling the fruit (the three bodies).
Refute, establish, answer, point, walk, fruit — six steps, and consciousness-only stands.
