Figures祖師
The masters behind the texts Waken translates — the authors who composed them, the translators who carried them into Chinese, and the commentators who opened them. All are figures of antiquity. Where a master's exact dates are uncertain, an approximate century is shown and marked as such — these are ancient teachers, not modern persons of the same name.

His preface attests who recorded the* Fahua Wenju: *"this is the private record of Dharma Master Guanding, in twenty fascicles." All twenty half-fascicle bylines in the text read simply "taught by the Tiantai Master Zhizhe," and the phrase "recorded by Guanding" occurs nowhere in it; the recorder's name is found only in this preface. The traditional attribution rests on that internal testimony—both accounts are true and rest on different evidence.T34n1718 0001a23–0001a24
The preface gives the work as "twenty fascicles." In the transmitted T34n1718 the teiHeader reads ten fascicles, cb:juan opens twenty half-fascicles, and the juan milestones number ten: the preface's count of twenty agrees with the half-fascicle reckoning. Both counts are true and differ only in how they count.T34n1718 0001a24
The preface records that more than a hundred years after Zhiyi's passing, in the wuzi year of the Tianbao era of the Tang, the monk Lang of Qingtai Monastery in Dongyang Commandery sighed while lecturing that in this record "the text ran on while the sense broke off, or the sense came before the text, or the prose opened its section first."T34n1718 0001a24–0001a29
The preface records that Lang weighed the matter repeatedly, and, unable to decline, fixed his mind on the Great Master to seek his assent; moved by what came in a dream, he then began to set the text in order. It states that he did not "add to or subtract from the text in the pursuit of agreement or difference"—what was set in order was sequence, not wording. The transmitted T34n1718 is that ordered recension; no separate witness survives for collation against its earlier state.T34n1718 0001b06–0001b07
